- 0:00I have been looking forward to preaching this
- 0:03morning this message because it is one that I
- 0:07have been just sitting in and meditating, living
- 0:11and breathing myself. I am no great theologian
- 0:17at all. I love Jesus, and I love to find out
- 0:21as much of him as I can in my life and to know
- 0:25him better and better. There is this word, though,
- 0:31that we hear, and sometimes we hear these things
- 0:35and think everybody knows just what it is in
- 0:40the church, and that word is trinity. It's actually
- 0:46not even a word that's in the Bible, but it conveys
- 0:51what is in the Bible. So we have the Father,
- 0:56the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And my goal today
- 1:01is not to explain the mystery of the Trinity.
- 1:07In fact, I feel a little trepidation in approaching
- 1:11it because I feel like it is so beyond my understanding
- 1:17this relationship of the Father, the Son, and
- 1:21the Holy Spirit. Yet I want to know it because
- 1:26the truth is, is that I'm a part of it now. And
- 1:30so here's what we're going to do this morning.
- 1:32We're going to quickly just walk through some
- 1:35verses. I hope you have your Bible because you're
- 1:37going to need to jot some things down because
- 1:40I'm not going to take a lot. I want to get us
- 1:42to a couple of ideas and the table of the Lord
- 1:47this morning. Because I feel that he's going
- 1:50to really do something in you as we look at this
- 1:56understanding of the Trinity that really was
- 1:59not even an English word until the 13th century.
- 2:04Obviously, we have the Latin word. It came into
- 2:07being in the French language, and then in the
- 2:1013th century became part of the English language.
- 2:15But I want to begin in Deuteronomy chapter 6,
- 2:18and you are, I'm sure, very familiar with this.
- 2:22Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one. Love
- 2:32the Lord your God with all your heart, all your
- 2:34soul, and all your strength. Hear this declaration.
- 2:39Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God. God is one.
- 2:46When we look at these titles here, we have the
- 2:50Lord, which is Yahweh, the Lord, our God. That
- 2:57name there is actually Elohim, which I love this
- 3:02because it expresses the Trinity so beautiful.
- 3:05It is plural in form, singular in meaning. That
- 3:14name, Elohim, is plural, Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
- 3:18but in its meaning, it is singular. It is one.
- 3:24Isn't that beautiful? Right there, we see that
- 3:28this plural God is yet one God. This is the Trinity.
- 3:34And we can even see a little bit at work in Hebrews
- 3:37chapter 1, where it is saying, this is what God
- 3:41says about angels and such. And it also says,
- 3:45this is what he says about the Son, Jesus. And
- 3:51so God the Father says about the Son, your throne,
- 3:55O God, will last forever and ever. And so even
- 4:02in this passage, we see Father God calling Jesus
- 4:05God. It's plural, yet it's singular. It is this
- 4:12beautiful mystery that I want us to look at today.
- 4:17And hear my heart in this. My heart is not that
- 4:22you go away with some kind of greater knowledge.
- 4:27My heart is this. I love the passage where, in
- 4:33the Old Testament, where Isaac, Abraham's son
- 4:37Isaac, is out in the field, right? His wife,
- 4:42Rebecca, is on his way to him. And where is he
- 4:45found? Out in a field in Genesis, meditating.
- 4:51He had gone out to the field to meditate. Now,
- 4:58I know sometimes we get a little weird about
- 5:01that word because of Eastern religions. But can
- 5:05I just simplify what this means for you? It's
- 5:08very simple. And here in cow country, we will
- 5:13understand it. Meditation is to chew the cud.
- 5:20To meditate is to chew the cud and extract. The
- 5:26real nutrient from the mental food. That's meditation.
- 5:35So we're just going to chew on the beauty of
- 5:39the Trinity to extract what we need, the life
- 5:45-giving nutrient that we need from it. That is
- 5:48what I want for you today. Is for you to begin
- 5:52a process of meditation on the beauty of the
- 5:57Trinity. And so here I'm going to walk really
- 6:01quickly. Because I don't want to spend a lot
- 6:03of time here. But I want you to see. Because
- 6:06the word is not in there, I want you though to
- 6:09see where we find the Trinity at work. And it's
- 6:14at the very beginning in Genesis chapter 1, at
- 6:17the creation of the world. In the beginning,
- 6:20God, Elohim, plural yet singular, created the
- 6:26heavens and the earth. The earth was... formless
- 6:30and empty, darkness over the deep, and the Spirit
- 6:34of God was hovering. And God said, and what do
- 6:41we know from John chapter 1? Jesus is the Word.
- 6:48Jesus, and it is, and we're going to see this,
- 6:51that Jesus, as the Word, holds it all together,
- 6:55this world. It's powerful. From the very beginning,
- 7:01it took the three in one to create the heavens
- 7:05and the earth. In Matthew 3, we see the baptism
- 7:09of Jesus. So we see the Son of God himself being
- 7:14baptized. We see the heavens being opened and
- 7:18the Father affirming, this is my Son. And we
- 7:23see the Holy Spirit coming down as the dove.
- 7:27We see the three in one at work at the baptism.
- 7:31In Acts chapter 7, we have the first martyr,
- 7:35Stephen. And Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,
- 7:41it says in Acts 7. And so is he alone in this
- 7:47moment? No. The Trinity is surrounding him in
- 7:54his martyrdom. Did it mean he got rescued? Did
- 7:59it mean he didn't get stoned? It sure didn't.
- 8:02He surely did die at the hands of man. But in
- 8:08it, he's surrounded by the Trinity. He's full
- 8:13of the Holy Spirit. And he looks up and he sees
- 8:17into heaven the glory of God and Jesus standing
- 8:23at the right hand of God. Can you imagine being
- 8:32surrounded by the Trinity? The three in one.
- 8:39In Ephesians chapter one, you'll see if you take
- 8:43time to read through that passage, you will see
- 8:46the Trinity at work here. You'll see that the
- 8:48Father chooses us. You will see that Jesus redeems
- 8:54us. And you will see that you are sealed by the
- 8:59Holy Spirit. Our deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.
- 9:03You see the three in one at work in Ephesians
- 9:071. In Galatians 4, and we're going to be breaking
- 9:09this down in a moment, but in Galatians 4 it
- 9:12says, when the set time had fully come, God sent
- 9:16his son, born of a woman under law, to redeem
- 9:22those under the law that we might receive adoption
- 9:26to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent
- 9:32the spirit of his son into our hearts. The spirit
- 9:38who calls out Abba Father. We see the three in
- 9:43one. And in our last commission in Matthew 28,
- 9:47before Jesus is ascended, what do we have? Go
- 9:51and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
- 9:54them in? The name of just Jesus? No. The Father,
- 10:00the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The three in one.
- 10:07It's such a beautiful relationship. I found it
- 10:14interesting. How many of you have heard of Nikki
- 10:17Cruz? I'm just trying to get a picture here.
- 10:21Okay. I feel like it's all of us older ones.
- 10:26How many of you have heard of David Wilkerson?
- 10:29More of you. Okay, if you have not read the book
- 10:35or seen the film, The Cross and the Switchblade,
- 10:40you should do that this week. The Cross and the
- 10:44Switchblade. Nikki Cruz was led by David Wilkerson
- 10:51to the Lord in New York. Nicky Cruz was one of
- 10:56the most, he was a leader of one of the most
- 11:02violent gangs in New York. Radically changed
- 11:09by the gospel of Jesus Christ through David Wilkerson's
- 11:15ministry. Nikki Cruz went on to write, you may
- 11:19not, many of you may have heard the cross and
- 11:21the switchblade. See, all of you young people,
- 11:24this is the stuff that Darren and I were fed
- 11:26upon when we were in youth group. This is what
- 11:31you did in youth group back in the early 90s,
- 11:35late 80s. You watched the cross and the switchblade,
- 11:40then you went out on the streets. He went on
- 11:45to write a book called The Magnificent Three.
- 11:49I have not read the book, but I'm going to quote
- 11:52a little bit out of it today. And Nicky Cruz,
- 11:55notorious gang leader, said this about the Trinity.
- 12:01Something has emerged in my walk with God that
- 12:06has become the most important element of my discipleship.
- 12:12It has become the thing that sustains me, that
- 12:16feeds me, that keeps me steady when I am shaky.
- 12:21I have come to see God, to know him, to relate
- 12:25to him as the three in one. God as Trinity, God
- 12:30the Father, the Savior, and Holy Spirit. He has
- 12:35given to me over the years a vision of himself
- 12:37as three in one. And the ability to relate to
- 12:42God in that way is the single most important
- 12:45fact of my Christian growth. Can you imagine
- 12:49coming off the streets as a major gang leader
- 12:51in New York City? Your spiritual growth that
- 12:57you would go through. He describes as this, God
- 13:01is magnificent father. God is a magnificent savior,
- 13:06Jesus Christ. But if it were not for the magnificent
- 13:11Holy Spirit, I would still be a wretched, hateful
- 13:15sinner. It is not enough. Catch this, that he
- 13:22said. To have a Father God who loves and provides
- 13:25for me, it is not even enough to have a Savior
- 13:28who died for my sins. For any of those blessings
- 13:32to make a difference in our lives, there must
- 13:35also be present in this world the third person
- 13:38of God, the Holy Spirit. And so often the American
- 13:44church has been guilty of saying the Holy Spirit
- 13:47is okay if you go to a back room to encounter
- 13:50him when he is part of the Godhead, the three
- 13:54in one. He is no less important than God the
- 13:57Father. He is no less important than Jesus the
- 13:59Savior. He is Holy Spirit. And Jesus left and
- 14:03was ascended that the Holy Spirit might come.
- 14:08We need Holy Spirit. We need not two in one.
- 14:15We need three in one. Amen? And so as we are
- 14:20looking at how the Trinity relates both with
- 14:23one another and with creation, us, let's take
- 14:28just a quick overview. This is not exhaustive
- 14:30at all. I just want us to get a little picture
- 14:33of how they begin to relate with one another,
- 14:36and we have it beginning with God the Father.
- 14:41God the Father. In 1 Corinthians 11, it says
- 14:44that God the Father is the head of Christ. He
- 14:51is the head of Christ. This is the mystery to
- 14:55me of the Trinity because they are all God, yet
- 15:00they all have these roles. I believe we see these
- 15:03roles because it begins to teach us earthlings.
- 15:09How to relate. And we do relate to God the Father
- 15:15in an authoritative manner. He is. The Father
- 15:20is the one that carries authority, doesn't he?
- 15:25And so the Father in the functioning of Jesus'
- 15:30ministry on earth operated in an authoritative
- 15:35way. That is his role. And so God the Father
- 15:42is authority. God the Father is the one that
- 15:45sent the Son. He's also the one who sends the
- 15:50Holy Spirit. We read this in Galatians 4. At
- 15:56the right time, God sent the Son, didn't he?
- 16:00So he's the sender of the Son, but also in John
- 16:0314, Jesus said this. I will ask the Father. Isn't
- 16:08that interesting? Even Jesus says, Asking the
- 16:11Father, and he will give you another advocate
- 16:15to help you and be with you forever. The Spirit
- 16:21of truth. But the advocate, the Holy Spirit,
- 16:27whom the Father will send in my name, will teach
- 16:30you all things and remind you of everything I
- 16:33have said. And so even Jesus is recognizing that
- 16:38the Father, is the one that sends both himself
- 16:42and the Spirit. We're going to see this more
- 16:50when we look at the role of the Son. But the
- 16:53first thing that we know that is the most obvious
- 16:56role of the Son in the Godhead is our Redeemer,
- 17:00right? Why did the Father, the Father's kind
- 17:03of the architect of the plan, and so he sent
- 17:06the Son. Why did he send the Son? Just to teach
- 17:09us how to be good people? No. He's the Redeemer.
- 17:14He's the one that was offered up as the sacrifice.
- 17:20We read it there in Galatians 4, that he came
- 17:23to redeem us under the law that we would receive
- 17:26adoption. It is the primary thing he redeems.
- 17:33I love, though, the other thing that the Son
- 17:36does. And that is that the Son reveals the Father.
- 17:43The Son reveals the Father. I think this is so
- 17:47beautiful. And I want to encourage you, if you
- 17:50haven't been memorizing one of these verses in
- 17:52here, I should surely encourage you to meditate
- 17:55on it and memorize it this week. But there are
- 17:58three verses here that portray such a beautiful
- 18:01thing that Jesus does in revealing the Father.
- 18:05John chapter 1, no one has ever seen God, verse
- 18:1018, but the one and only Son. And here is that
- 18:16interesting mystery. Who is himself God. And
- 18:23so nobody has seen God but Jesus. Who is God.
- 18:31And is in closest relationship with the Father.
- 18:39Has made him known. Has made him known. You know
- 18:45you can't see God. But Jesus walked this earth
- 18:51to reveal the one that he's in closest relationship
- 18:56with, the Father. Later on in John 17, he said,
- 19:02I have revealed you, he's talking to the Father,
- 19:06I have revealed you to those whom you gave me
- 19:11out of the world. This is one of his purposes,
- 19:16revealing the Father. In Hebrews 1, and it says
- 19:24there at the beginning in verse 1, in the past,
- 19:27God spoke, Old Testament, God spoke to our ancestors
- 19:31through the prophets at many times in various
- 19:35ways. This is the only way they knew God was
- 19:38through the prophets of old. In verse 2, it says
- 19:44this, though. But in these last days, he has
- 19:47spoken to us, not by the prophets, by the Son,
- 19:52whom he appointed heir of all things, and through
- 19:59whom he also made the universe. There at the
- 20:03beginning, remember, Jesus was at the beginning.
- 20:09Jesus was not created to be our sacrifice. Jesus
- 20:13was and is and forever will be. And then there's
- 20:21this beautiful verse three. The son is the radiance
- 20:27of God's glory and the exact representation of
- 20:35his being. sustaining all things by his powerful
- 20:42word. That would be a great verse to memorize.
- 20:52The stuff that you deal with, what it does and
- 20:57what the enemy would want to do through the stuff
- 20:59you're dealing with. And listen, I'm not minimizing
- 21:02the stuff you're going through because we all
- 21:04go through stuff and it's hard. But see, the
- 21:08enemy uses your stuff as an excuse to get your
- 21:11gaze lowered, to get weight pushed down on you,
- 21:17for you to begin to be oppressed, and to forget
- 21:21where you come from, who you belong to, and who
- 21:27you're in relationship with. And it's verses
- 21:30like this that should lift up your gaze. Throw
- 21:35off the oppression because the son is the radiance
- 21:40of God's glory, the exact representation of his
- 21:43being. He sustains all things of this world and
- 21:48your world by the powerful word that is him.
- 21:55The enemy would want you to forget that. He would
- 22:00want you to forget that the one who holds the
- 22:03universe together by his powerful word holds
- 22:07your universe together, who holds your family
- 22:10together, your job, your struggle with sin, your
- 22:14struggle to overcome. He sustains you. He holds
- 22:18you together. The minute we think we're holding
- 22:21ourselves together, we lose it. It's a beautiful
- 22:27thing what Jesus does. It is more than just the
- 22:31redemption of the world. It's the revelation
- 22:34of the Father to us. The Father he's trying to
- 22:38unite us to. It's hard to be united to a God
- 22:43whom we cannot see. So Jesus reveals this God
- 22:48whom he has redeemed us to. He's also in this
- 22:54showing us his interaction, how to interact with
- 22:57this God, the Father. And in John 14, he says
- 23:02that the world may learn, because we have to
- 23:05learn it, that I love the Father and do exactly
- 23:10what my Father has commanded me. We see this
- 23:13interaction with the Father, relationship and
- 23:18obedience. In chapter 5, he says this, the son
- 23:22can do nothing by himself. He can only see what
- 23:29the father is doing. Because whatever the father
- 23:34does, the son does. He's revealing an interaction
- 23:40with God because this is our interaction with
- 23:45God. He's teaching us. that we might learn what
- 23:50it is to interact with this Father of ours, whom
- 23:56we have been adopted into because of his redemption.
- 24:03The last thing here that I want us to focus on
- 24:06with Jesus is that he's the baptizer. Now, we
- 24:09read that the Father sent the Holy Spirit, but
- 24:13here we read that Jesus is the one. John the
- 24:17Baptist said in Matthew chapter 3, there is one
- 24:21coming, right? And he's saying he is going to
- 24:25baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
- 24:32This is the role of Jesus. He baptizes with the
- 24:37Holy Spirit and with fire. So if you need a little
- 24:43more Holy Spirit, if you need a little more fire
- 24:45in your life, the Son wants to give you more.
- 24:51He wants to give you a fresh dunking. Dunking
- 24:56in there. I'll take all the dunk and he thinks
- 25:01I need, right? I need a little more. This world
- 25:04and the enemy tries to throw water on your fire.
- 25:08And Jesus is ever ready to ignite it. He doesn't
- 25:11care about water on you. We learned that from
- 25:14Elijah the prophet. No, it was Elisha. He came
- 25:18and dumped all that fire or that water on the
- 25:21offering. And then he called down fire and it
- 25:25came and consumed. It doesn't matter what this
- 25:27world and the enemy is trying to douse you with.
- 25:30The fire of Jesus can consume it. And so if you're
- 25:35in this place today and you're saying, man, I
- 25:37feel like I've just been dumped on. I feel like
- 25:40I've been doused. With weariness, with doubt,
- 25:45with struggle, with depression. Jesus will come
- 25:49and he will baptize you in the spirit and with
- 25:52fire. Jesus does a lot, doesn't he? Now, the
- 25:57Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit. I love the Holy
- 26:04Spirit and what he does. And this is what Nicky
- 26:07Cruz got, I think. In John 15. Verse 26. It says,
- 26:17when the advocate, the Holy Spirit, comes, whom
- 26:21I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit
- 26:26of truth who goes out from the Father. Wow, we
- 26:33really need the Spirit of truth, don't we, today?
- 26:36He, the Spirit, will testify about me. This is
- 26:43the beauty of the, this is why they are so interdependent,
- 26:47the Trinity. Because now we have the Holy Spirit
- 26:51who reveals Jesus. We have the Holy Spirit who
- 26:56testifies of the Son. And then it goes on, because
- 27:02how does the Holy Spirit testify? Can we see
- 27:07the Holy Spirit? We can see it manifested through
- 27:12us. Does the Holy Spirit just start talking into
- 27:16the air? No, the next part of that verse says
- 27:20this. And you also must testify. For you have
- 27:26been with me from the beginning. You've been
- 27:29with Jesus. And the role of the Holy Spirit through
- 27:34the church, through you and me, is to testify.
- 27:38of the Savior, Jesus. It's such a beautiful interdependence,
- 27:44and we see in this passage that we've been brought
- 27:48in to this interdependence. The invitation has
- 27:54been given, and he said, hey, the Holy Spirit
- 27:57has to testify, but guess what? He needs you
- 28:00to do it through. He needs you to be part of
- 28:04the testifying. This is such a beautiful thing
- 28:07that it's saying, hey, come on. The work of the
- 28:10Trinity, you're now, as sons and daughters, you're
- 28:13now part of. The interdependence of the Father,
- 28:18the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Praise the Lord.
- 28:21I'm excited to be part of this interdependent
- 28:26relationship. And we see it in such a beautiful
- 28:30way in 2 Peter chapter 1. Oh, man. You guys,
- 28:37you got to like just sit in this verse this week.
- 28:41We see in verse 3. His divine power. That word
- 28:47power is dunamis power. It's the same power we
- 28:51see in Acts chapter 2. The power of the Holy
- 28:55Spirit. And so, his divine power, that of the
- 29:01Holy Spirit, we see this part of the Trinity
- 29:03at work, has given us everything we need for
- 29:08godly living. Oh. And this is what Nikki Cruz
- 29:14was talking about. How do I go from being the
- 29:18leader of the most violent gang in New York to
- 29:21become a Christ follower living godly? The divine
- 29:25power of the Holy Spirit. He's given us everything
- 29:30for godly life through our knowledge of him who
- 29:34called us by his own glory and goodness. Through
- 29:40these he has given us his very great and precious
- 29:45promises. So that through them you, okay, everybody
- 29:52ears, you're open. So that you may participate.
- 29:56Everybody say participate. Okay. In the divine
- 30:03nature. Just meditate on that for a little while.
- 30:10You feel like life is falling apart. You need
- 30:13to remember. You need to remember what you're
- 30:18participating in. The divine nature. Okay, do
- 30:23you want to know what participate means? It's
- 30:29simple. It means to be. It means. It means to
- 30:40come into existence. So think about that for
- 30:48a minute. The divine nature. We are able to come
- 30:56into existence in the divine nature. are invited
- 31:09in not just to know about not just to admire
- 31:21this three in one we have been granted access
- 31:27to become part of that relationship of God the
- 31:35Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. This
- 31:40is not some junior high clique where everybody
- 31:47else gets to participate with God the Father,
- 31:51God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He has
- 31:55opened the door to whomever should desire to
- 32:01participate in the divine nature, should become
- 32:05part of, to become one with. And if you think
- 32:11about those high school cliques, those junior
- 32:14high cliques, and we think that we age out of
- 32:18that, we don't. I'm shocked when I hear pastors
- 32:23talking about it at district council. Darren
- 32:25and I are very intentional at district council.
- 32:27We'll try to like find two people sitting alone
- 32:30that we don't know to go and meet. But you will
- 32:35find some of that even there. We don't always
- 32:39outgrow that. See, the enemy wants you to think
- 32:45that you're the exception. That everybody else
- 32:48is invited and wanted into the divine nature.
- 32:52When the truth is, is that he has come and given
- 32:56his life for each one of you sitting in the seat.
- 33:00Not one excluded. His desire is for each and
- 33:04every one of us to become part of the existence
- 33:08of the divine nature. Having escaped the corruption
- 33:16in the world caused by evil desires. We live
- 33:22in this world, but friend, we are not of it.
- 33:26We are not of it. We're part of the divine nature.
- 33:31One of my favorite sermons to preach was that
- 33:34our ordinary should look different, right? Our
- 33:39ordinary should not be just ordinary. And I love
- 33:43that idea because this is why we are part, we
- 33:49have become part of the divine nature. And so
- 33:53the things of this world, man, we let them have
- 33:59power over us because we forget. If I am focused
- 34:04on relationship, on being with the Father, the
- 34:07Son, and the Holy Spirit, why do I allow things
- 34:11in my life that would cause me separation from
- 34:15them? And yet we do. It isn't just that God is
- 34:19saying, hey, I want you to quit doing this and
- 34:21this and this. I don't want you to have fun in
- 34:24life. What he's saying is, no, hey, let's get
- 34:26rid of the stuff in life that caused division
- 34:30from the divine. That caused division from being
- 34:34part of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 34:41This is the Holy Trinity. And it's not just a
- 34:46doctrine. This is our life. It's more than just
- 34:55a mystery. It is our God. This is our God. We
- 35:06said that out of Isaiah today. This is our Elohim,
- 35:11three in one. And the sooner we have revelation
- 35:19of what it is to know that communion, the easier
- 35:26it is to walk through the pitfalls of this life.
- 35:33It's a lot less easy to get tripped up in sin
- 35:37when we know what it'll cost us relationship
- 35:42with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 35:50In John chapter 16, Jesus is beginning to set
- 35:55the stage for the disciples. And one of the things
- 36:00he says is a time is coming. And in fact, it
- 36:05has come when you will be scattered, each to
- 36:08your own home. And you will leave me all alone,
- 36:12he said. And then he says this one sentence that
- 36:17I think portrays the power of the Trinity. Yet
- 36:24I am not alone, for my Father is with me. Why
- 36:32was Jesus able to face betrayal and such mutilation
- 36:40of the flesh and the nailing on the cross and
- 36:45being forsaken, knowing he was going to be forsaken
- 36:48by the Father? This, I feel like, understanding
- 36:52the interdependence of the Trinity helps us to
- 36:56understand what was really happening on the cross.
- 37:01And when Jesus said, if it's possible, let this
- 37:04cup pass from me, I don't necessarily think it
- 37:08was what he was going to go through physically,
- 37:10as hard as that is. I think he knew there was
- 37:13going to be a moment on the cross when he took
- 37:17my sin. And because he took my sin, the Father's
- 37:23gaze turned away from him. And in that moment,
- 37:28The unity of the Trinity was broken because of
- 37:33my sin. So that I could come into the Trinity
- 37:38relationship. I think that's what Jesus was dreading.
- 37:44That moment of separation because of sin. There's
- 37:54an interdependence. This is a relational. Trinity.
- 38:00They are interdependent in their working with
- 38:03one another for you and for me. They don't operate
- 38:09of their own accord. They operate interdependently.
- 38:15And see, a lot of cultures can understand that
- 38:18because a lot of cultures are community -based.
- 38:23But see, we're not. We are an independent culture.
- 38:28We don't like to have to rely on other people.
- 38:31I know this because so many of you love to give
- 38:34to other people, but when it comes time to receiving
- 38:38from other people, it's very hard. It hurts our
- 38:42pride. And what does that speak of? Independence.
- 38:47We are an independent culture. There is never
- 38:52a time when the Trinity will not be interdependent.
- 38:58And that means there will never be a time that
- 39:01we are able to be independent of it. We will
- 39:07always, always, always need to be dependent upon
- 39:12the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And
- 39:18so this morning, as we've become partakers, as
- 39:22we have come into existence with this relational,
- 39:27interdependent interaction of the Trinity, I
- 39:32could think of no better place to really align
- 39:35ourself that than the table of the Lord. And
- 39:40so this morning, the ushers are going to come,
- 39:44and they're going to begin to distribute the
- 39:47bread and the cup. And as they do, often when
- 39:54we take a communion, we think of the Savior,
- 39:58Jesus. But what did Jesus say on the night he
- 40:03was betrayed? He said, as often as you do this,
- 40:06do what? Remember me. But when we think about
- 40:13how much the Father played into the redemption
- 40:19of humanity, when we think of how much the Holy
- 40:22Spirit is required, when we think, you cannot
- 40:26think about one without it being all three. Because
- 40:32they're not separate. They are God the Father,
- 40:34God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. To remember
- 40:37Jesus is to remember the Father whom we've been
- 40:41brought into adoption with. To remember Jesus
- 40:45is to remember that he has baptized us with the
- 40:49Holy Spirit. Interdependent. And as we come to
- 40:55this table today, we are coming. Remembering
- 41:01not just Jesus, but remembering the Father, the
- 41:06Son, and the Holy Spirit. And in a moment here,
- 41:16as I've been praying for this morning, I felt
- 41:19the Lord as we are about to partake of communion.
- 41:24I felt him give me a verse. Our response today
- 41:30to this word is going to be taking the bread
- 41:36and the cup and allowing the word of the Lord
- 41:41to begin to wash over us. Because there are some
- 41:44in here where you did come in very heavy, very
- 41:48burdened, carrying maybe deep grief or deep sorrow.
- 41:57And this morning, I believe that he has a word
- 41:59to release over you that is going to enable you
- 42:04to walk out these doors and keep walking and
- 42:08to keep getting up and to keep getting up and
- 42:13to keep getting up. And as much as we are loving
- 42:20one another, one another is not enough. We need.
- 42:26the divine Godhead. We need the Father, we need
- 42:31the Son, and we need the Holy Spirit. Amen? And
- 42:38so, in these moments, and if one of the ushers,
- 42:42when you're done, I still need some communion,
- 42:44please. These moments, I want you to begin to
- 42:49let the, as the old song says, the things of
- 42:53earth grow strangely dim. And I want you just
- 42:57to turn your gaze to this Godhead that you are
- 43:02a part of. And as you do, the passage that I
- 43:10felt him give me to read over you is from Isaiah
- 43:13chapter 40. And I want you just put away your
- 43:22notes, put away your Bibles, put away your phones.
- 43:26I want you just to hold the cup and the bread.
- 43:29And I want you to hear the words of the Lord
- 43:32from Isaiah 40. Comfort. Comfort my people, says
- 43:43your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and proclaim
- 43:51to her that her hard service has been completed.
- 43:58That, I'm going to add this, through Jesus, her
- 44:02sin has been paid for. There's no more striving.
- 44:09There's no more attempting. It's been paid for.
- 44:13Be comforted today in that. She has received
- 44:18from the Lord's hand double for all her sins.
- 44:27A voice of one calling in the wilderness, prepare
- 44:30the way for the Lord. Make straight in the desert
- 44:35a highway for our God. Every valley shall be
- 44:43raised up, every mountain in your life and hill
- 44:47made low. The rough ground shall become level.
- 44:55rugged places a plain and the glory of the Lord
- 45:03will be revealed and all people will see it together
- 45:08for the mouth of the Lord has spoken a voice
- 45:13says cry out and I said what shall I cry All
- 45:21people are like grass and all their faithfulness
- 45:24like the flowers of the field. The grass withers,
- 45:27the flowers fall because the breath of the Lord
- 45:31blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The
- 45:35grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word
- 45:38of our God endures forever. You who bring good
- 45:46news to Zion go up on a high mountain. Bring
- 45:51good news to Jerusalem. Lift your voice with
- 45:54a shout. Lift it up. Do not be afraid. Say to
- 45:59the towns of Judah, here is your God. Here is
- 46:03your Elohim. Three in one. See, the sovereign
- 46:10Lord comes with power. And he rules in your life
- 46:16with a mighty arm. His reward is with him and
- 46:23his recompense accompanies him. He pays back
- 46:29to you. He rewards you for everything your sin
- 46:33stole from you. He tends his flock like a shepherd.
- 46:40He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries
- 46:44them close to his heart. Listen to this, parents.
- 46:49He gently leads those that have young. Man, take
- 46:54a deep breath. He leads you gently with all your
- 46:57young children. And then here is your God. Your
- 47:04problems, your mountains seem so high, but listen
- 47:07to this. Who has measured the waters in the hollow
- 47:12of his hand? Or with the breadth of his hand
- 47:16marked off the heavens? in a basket or weighed
- 47:25the mountains on the scales and the hills in
- 47:29a balance? Who can fathom the spirit of the Lord
- 47:33or instruct the Lord as his counselor? Whom did
- 47:38the Lord consult to enlighten him and taught
- 47:41him the right way? Who was it that taught him
- 47:44knowledge or showed him the path of understanding?
- 47:49Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket.
- 47:53They are regarded as dust on the scales. He weighs
- 48:00the islands as though they were fine dust. My
- 48:05friends, your problem is not too big for your
- 48:09God. Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires,
- 48:16nor its animals enough for burnt offerings. For
- 48:19him all the nations are as nothing, and they
- 48:24are regarded by him as worthless and less than
- 48:27nothing. This is God the Father, God the Son,
- 48:33God the Holy Spirit. You are partakers of this
- 48:36God. With whom then will you compare God, Elohim?
- 48:43To what image will you liken him? A metal worker
- 48:50casts it. A goldsmith overlays it with gold and
- 48:55fashions silver chains for it. A person too poor
- 48:58to present such an offering selects wood that
- 49:02will not rot. They look for a skilled worker
- 49:05to set up an idol that will not topple. But there
- 49:08is no one that can be compared to God but Jesus.
- 49:17It is Jesus. Hallelujah. Do you not know? Have
- 49:23you not heard? Has it not been told to you from
- 49:26the beginning? Have you not understood since
- 49:29the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above
- 49:33the circle of the earth and its people are like
- 49:38grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like
- 49:42a canopy and spreads. Introduces the rulers of
- 49:51this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted.
- 49:55No sooner are they sown. Nor sooner do they take
- 49:58root in the ground. Then he blows on them and
- 50:01they wither. And the wind sweeps them away. To
- 50:06whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?
- 50:10Says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look
- 50:15to the heavens. Who created all these? brings
- 50:21out the starry host one by one and calls forth
- 50:25each of them by name. Don't you want to know
- 50:27what God has named them? I would love to know
- 50:30that. Because of his great power and mighty strength,
- 50:35not one of them is missing. Why do you complain,
- 50:39Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, my way is hidden
- 50:42from the Lord. My cause is disregarded by my
- 50:49God. Listen, I felt this, that some of you today
- 50:52have been asking this. God, why is my way hidden
- 50:57from you? Why have you disregarded me, God? And
- 51:05here's his answer. Do you not know? Have you
- 51:09not heard? The Lord... is the everlasting God,
- 51:17the everlasting Elohim, the three in one, the
- 51:21creator of the heavens, the ends of the earth.
- 51:24And he will not grow tired or weary. His understanding
- 51:28no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary
- 51:33and increases the power. love that verse. This
- 51:49is like the theme for the older people, this
- 51:52passage. But listen, it is not just for the older
- 51:56people because we live in a day and age when
- 51:59our young families are exhausted from running
- 52:04here and there and everywhere and trying to keep
- 52:07up. Even, it says, youths grow tired and weary.
- 52:13And young men stumble and fall. Young people,
- 52:19even you, grow tired, you grow weary, you stumble
- 52:24and you fall. But here's the good news for you.
- 52:29When you do stumble and fall, when you do grow
- 52:32tired and weak, here's the good news. Those who
- 52:36hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They
- 52:41will soar. like eagles. They will run and not
- 52:47grow weary. They will walk and not be faint.
- 52:51Hallelujah. Hallelujah. And the enemy wants you
- 52:55to think you're too tired to run anymore. The
- 52:58enemy wants you to think you've stumbled and
- 53:00fallen too much. Listen, get your hope in God
- 53:04the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
- 53:07Get your hope in Him. He will not let you fall.
- 53:11He will cause you to soar. like an eagle. He
- 53:15will cause you to run and not be faint. And so
- 53:22we come to the table of the Lord and we take
- 53:25the bread, the body of Christ. And as we take
- 53:33the body of Christ, we say, Lord, I have felt
- 53:41disregarded. I have felt overlooked. I have felt
- 53:44like I haven't been seen by you. But as I hold
- 53:48this body, as I hold this broken body, I hear
- 53:57the truth that it is for me that you died. You
- 54:01saw me and you died on the cross. You saw me
- 54:08in my life and my stuff and you died on the cross
- 54:11for me. You took my sins for me. And Father,
- 54:17we thank you that you sent the Son. We thank
- 54:22you for sending him to redeem mankind. Jesus,
- 54:28we thank you for walking in obedience to the
- 54:30Father, even death upon a cross. And Holy Spirit,
- 54:36thank you that you have revealed to us our Redeemer,
- 54:40that you have empowered us in godliness. And
- 54:45so we remember Jesus and the Father and the Holy
- 54:50Spirit and with joy we partake this morning.
- 54:55Let's do that together. And as we take the cup,
- 55:13the blood, for every covenant that was made in
- 55:16the Bible, blood was shed. Blood is what sealed
- 55:21the covenant. And this morning, as we hold the
- 55:26sealing of this covenant, your shed blood on
- 55:29the cross. Our hearts are full of thankfulness.
- 55:41into the divine nature, into the relationship
- 55:43of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is tied in
- 55:50through the shed blood of Christ. There's no
- 55:55undoing it. You made a way for me to be part
- 55:59of this divine nature and you did it through
- 56:04your blood. You did it in such a way that that
- 56:08cannot be broken. And so we stand in confidence
- 56:13and boldness in the throne room as partakers
- 56:16of the divine nature because our trust is not
- 56:20in our own selves, in our own works, in our own
- 56:23independence. It is in the blood of Jesus. Let's
- 56:29partake of this blood together, the shed blood.
- 56:37Praise the Lord. Can you just stand with me?
- 56:43We're going to worship for a few moments here
- 56:45before we leave. I don't know about you. Every
- 56:48time I think of the Trinity now, I just get so
- 56:51overwhelmed by the power of it and the fact that
- 56:54they want me to be part of them, that the Father
- 56:58wants me to be part, that the Son wants me to
- 57:01be part, and that the Holy Spirit wants me to
- 57:03be in relationship with them. You are not alone.
- 57:08You are not alone. You are surrounded. by this
- 57:11beautiful Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- 57:15Let's worship them for just a moment.
