[upbeat rock music] Hey, everybody. [laughs] [laughs] You did that on purpose. You fucked it up.
• 0:14
[laughs] Well, uh- This is the Chewy's Lounge Chair Takeover- Of the-... of Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast Podcast. Podcast. Take number- Take two... number 17, taking over number 153. Five, seven, 156- 156... something.
• 0:28
Numbers are hard. Somewhere in there. Yeah. Numbers are hard. [laughs] They are. It's a max up. It's a mix, mix-up. Max up? Mashup? We have, we have, we actually have the whole c- well, no.
• 0:37
We have the important part of the two crews together tonight. Uh, yeah. Uh, just to my right is, uh, Chewy and Kayla, and then Spinner is to my left. Yeah. I was gonna say, that's- So-...
• 0:48
a lot on your right if you weren't gonna call it that... oh, we were [laughs] We're up here in, uh, beautiful Seeley, Wisconsin, at Seeley Dave's wonderful abode. [upbeat music] Beautiful up here.
• 0:58
By the way, Kayla's never been here. Actually, you guys haven't been here either. No. It's timely. It's pretty nice. Not here here. No, I mean in this particular humble abode area. No, I'm coming again, though.
• 1:07
This place is awesome. It is pretty nice. Yeah, it's all worth it. It's unbelievable, isn't it? And we have been all around here. I mean- We've been to Sawmill. We've been to Double O Trailhead. I've never...
• 1:15
Y- you don't even see this place from the road. No, no. There's, there's like red neck castles back here. [laughs] Well, there's, there's also that snow bank you bounce off of when you get into the driveway.
• 1:23
Oh, you mean when you, when you bank off of, you know, in the summers they're like- I didn't bounce off it... yeah, well, good, good on, good- Hey, Greg, you're driving a minivan. [laughs] Good on ya.
• 1:32
[laughs] It was, it was just snow. It was not a big deal. [laughs] I can't believe that Turters made it through the snowbu- So why did we come up here? We came up here for the Fat Bike Birkie. Yes. Yes.
• 1:41
I was wondering about that. That's why we're up here. Well, we came up here for Fat Bike Birkie. You came up here to stay in this place. And also take pictures of you doing the Fat Bike Birkie. Yeah, there you go.
• 1:49
Which- So, so two of us did the... I didn't register, so they wouldn't let me in. Yeah. I tried to sneak in. That didn't work. [laughs] I tried to sneak in. Yeah, tell us about it.
• 1:56
I didn't know that Birkie had that kind of bouncers where they would kick you out- Oh, they're like so-... for not paying. Oh, they're militant about it, for sure. Yeah. Really? They're like, "Excuse me, sir."
• 2:02
Definitely. "You have no badge on your bike. You are not allowed on here." Yeah. And I said- I was like, "No, he's my coach." [laughs] Yes. I should have brought- I might get lost.
• 2:11
I should have brought, I should have brought a Nike coaching vest along and then I could have rode with her- Probably... and still coaching her the whole way, 'cause you can on the course then. Yeah.
• 2:17
  But they were, they, they...
• 2:18
I went inside and asked, you know, kind of gave my sob story about just showing up at the last minute and seeing if they would give me a number, and the girl there was willing to give me a number until the one probably that you saw that was back on the computer says, "Nope, registration's closed."
• 2:31
Yeah. Not for you. I'm like, "There is a fucking stack of numbers there. Just give me one. I'll give you 100 bucks. It's $100 to race." It's $100 to ride your bike. Yeah. Yeah. I don't, I mean- Well, I don't know.
• 2:42
I don't understand that personally. I don't understand why they would turn away money. It's $65 if you do it right away. Yeah. And then they, they actually send you emails say, "Price increase. Price increase.
• 2:50
Price increase." So did you do it right away? Yeah, I- Spinner did it right away. I've done every one. Spinner has done every race.
• 2:55
I did it this- And he was the only person in the race today that was wearing actual shorts with legs showing. And the reason- He wasn't the only one. I did see another shorts person. Was there one? Sorry, I'm sorry.
• 3:05
Not, not on the, not on the long race. Not on the long race. Yeah. This shorty person. And the reason nobody else wore shorts- [laughs]... 'cause it was fucking stupid. [laughs] My, my legs are cold as hell. Conclusion.
• 3:15
[laughs] I think [laughs] negative, negative 15 when we got up this morning. So I believe it was... Was it 15 below outside? 15 below when I picked up my bib this morning. Yeah.
• 3:21
And I think it maybe got up to close to zero when we were starting. It was pretty close to zero. I think it was negative nine when we started. [laughs] It was, it was, it was four below when, uh, was it nine below?
• 3:28
It was four below when you guys started. At least that's what they announced when you guys started. Okay. Okay. It was cold. Yeah. So when the f- when the, when the long guys went.
• 3:35
Yeah, 'cause we got out of the truck, I hopped on my bike, I rode up, heard the end of the national anthem, and boom. [laughs] Go. [laughs] Yeah. You, you didn't even leave here till like 20 minutes- I know.
• 3:43
I was like, "Chewy, we're leaving in 15 minutes"... or however long. Yeah. And I look at him like 12 minutes later and he's still sitting in that chair. [laughs] I gotta put my boots on. Do I gotta put my belt on?
• 3:51
So for those of you that actually care about who won or didn't win this race, what's, how do you say Cory's last name? Steljes. Steljes. Cory Steljes won, which is- Again, which is like maybe three in a row...
• 4:02
well, Chris Stevens second, and Will Ross from Anchorage, who has won the race in the past- Yeah... was third. And then- Steljes is from Madison. Who, who is? Cory is. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah, but Will's from Anchorage.
• 4:14
Yep. And then on the ladies' side we had Maria Statz, uh, Bea Furlong, and Sonia Mattsson. Mm-hmm. Uh, so w- if you wanna know all the fast people, those were them.
• 4:28
The winning time was one hour and 50 minutes, so I think that... Spinner, tell us how fast that course was, because an hour and 50 is pretty good for 47 kilometers on the snow on a fat bike.
• 4:40
Yeah, it was a little bit weird because like all the trees were frozen. That was kind of a neat piece as you're riding through, like everything just looked like glass. But the...
• 4:47
And usually every year in the low spots, um, the snow gets packed and water kind of runs down and there's ice, you know, in kind of the, in the, the depths of the hills.
• 4:57
And today everything was just like a frozen concrete gravel. [laughs] I don't even know how to say it. There was definitely a line. After you get like past the first five miles, that track gets pretty narrow.
• 5:10
It's like four, three feet wide. And even when you can see people that got off on the hills and, and ran up the hills, there's usually like big divots in the hills.
• 5:17
Today there was like maybe little inches of toe prints where people were running up. Yeah, I think, uh, we talked to, uh, Jerry Wright last night, Judge Jerry, and Executioner. Yeah. Thank you, thank you Dave Lunds.
• 5:28
Uh, he was talking about how normally the grooming equipment will go four to six inches down into the snow, and it churns it up and then that stuff compacts again.
• 5:38
He said it wasn't getting more than an inch and a half down. Mm-hmm. 'Cause it, they had this huge ice storm here midweek prior to today. Yeah.
• 5:46
And it was an inch of rain, warm, and everything froze, and that's why these trees are all, every, all these trees are just...
• 5:54
The fact that they even got the course rideable today is very, a very big deal because there was so much dead fall and- It tre-... trees across the trail.
• 6:02
You could see all over where there had been- Where they cut them up and pulled them off. Yeah, for sure. You could see that the whole way.
• 6:07
And then, and the other thing too is that there's, even if they didn't fall, the ice would just like pull them in. You know, 'cause like it's not like-... the regular woods where there's trees everywhere.
• 6:16
This is like, it's always been clear, so it's easy for the trees to fall into that clearing for, you know, 30 miles or whatever it was. Well, as Jerry said, they, they haven't even done clearing trails up here yet. No.
• 6:26
They still got miles, and miles, and miles that they haven't got to yet. Well, and it's also gonna be 40 degrees next week, so- Yeah. Yeah. Well- This may be the last weekend to ride this year. Yeah.
• 6:37
Which is always a challenge, because this is always two weeks after the Birkie ski race, and we're getting into the time, 'cause today's starting daylight savings time. Mm-hmm. This is the time when stuff- Oh, shit.
• 6:49
Uh, well not for another- The bar's gonna be open for another hour. [laughs] No. It's gonna be open for one hour less, 'cause we spring forward. Oh, that's right. Oh. We get fucked this time. Yeah, totally.
• 6:59
Yeah, you lose an hour. 'Cause we're gonna be there at, we're gonna be there at 2:00 when they close. [laughs] I, I could use some sleep after last night. It'll be 2:00, but it's only 1:00.
• 7:04
[laughs] Um, no, but, well, in doing every one, there was one year where it wasn't canceled, but instead of doing the full Birkie trail, they made like a six-mile loop kind of around the telemark.
• 7:16
And the, uh, north-facing hills were completely ice, and the south-facing hills were mud. That was the one where I rode the big fat dummy when it first came out. And, uh- What does that say about you?
• 7:28
You're a big fat dummy. Do you not know me? [laughs] You've known me long enough. [laughs] You may have the only correct bike out there. Ah. Well, yeah.
• 7:36
Well, and it was, 'cause it was brand new one, I wasn't sure how to ride it yet. We had a 30-pack of High Life we put in the back for weight back there [laughs] because on the hills it was so far back.
• 7:45
[sniffs] That was- That was on this, the Birkie ride? Yeah. I didn't know that. Yeah. It's like putting that concrete in the back of your pickup truck. Yeah. [laughs] Or sandbags in the winter.
• 7:52
That's kinda what it was like. [sniffs] No, but today was, yeah, today felt really fast and, um, you usually gotta take it really careful on the corners.
• 8:01
And like guys that, uh, when they start climbing the hills towards the end, you know, the snow kinda digs in and then digs up and spins. You can see the tires where like they go through every crank.
• 8:11
You didn't see any of that today, so. So the, the- What did you ride today, Spinner? I didn't even notice. My bike? Yeah. Uh, the Salsa Bear Grease. Oh, you did ride that, huh? He had gears. I had gears.
• 8:22
The, the one time of year. Yeah. And it was carbon. Oh. He's, he's getting so carbon in gears. [laughs] Well, there was like- Like a dirty word in our world...
• 8:28
more than once I was going up the hill- Let's just add a fucking motor to that piece of shit, you know what I'm saying?...
• 8:32
and I hit the wrong button because like [laughs] I'm still not used to the buttons 'cause I only ride that bike at this race.
• 8:38
And, uh, yeah, get to the top of the downhill- So you have a $4,000 bike you ride once a year... when I shit myself. Those are called shifts. What's the matter with you? It's for sale.
• 8:45
[laughs] Oh, by the way, it's for- I might buy it. [laughs] You don't have to keep touching that thing. I just- Stop it. Just- I do it for-... knock it off... it's aesthetically pleasing to put it closer to my mouth.
• 8:55
[laughs] Just leave it, just leave it close to your mouth 'cause- [laughs] For, for- Are we still talking about the microphone? [laughs] Greg doesn't like the tease. He doesn't like the teasing.
• 9:05
Just- Goddammit, put it there and leave it! [laughs] So the, so Kayla, this, was this your first race? This was my first. Up here at the big old fat bike Birkie? Yeah. Not your first race, but your first Birkie race.
• 9:18
First Birkie. First bike race, not triathlon. Yeah. She's an experienced Brodie. Oh. Oh, this is, this is technically- Yeah... your first off-road race, right? Yeah. Technically. It was... Okay, backtrack.
• 9:31
This was not a fucking race for Kayla, but apparently it was. [laughs] Chewy, what are you doing? Chewy is taking a shit off. Yeah. Chewy took his shit off. Yeah. I think he's gonna go take a shit, actually.
• 9:42
Why did you do this one? Are you gonna leave a shit? What, what did, what, what did you say fat bike Birkie, I gotta try that? Well, this guy had brought it up. He's like, "Hey, I'm taking this weekend off to do it."
• 9:51
And I ride mountain biking with them, and I just thought- Who is this guy? Uh, Pete. Yep. What, what's Pete doing here? He's- Pete do- Pete doesn't have a headphone on, so he has no say in this whole thing...
• 10:00
he is the audience. He wanted to be the audience. Yeah. I already asked him. Anyways, yeah. I bike with, uh, the RASK crew out of Rochester mountain biking. What does RASK stand for? Rochester Active.
• 10:10
Rochester A- Active Sporting Club. Yep. There you go. Cross-country. Cross-country skiing. I'm, I'm just parroting what you're saying there, Pete. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. 'Cause our radio listeners can't... Yeah.
• 10:21
Wah, wah, wah, wah. Anyways, he brought it up. My buddy Travis brought it up. I know you had talked about it, and I was like, "This sounds like a fun time. I wanna do it."
• 10:29
I had just bought a, a fat bike this year, 'cause I was like, "Winters are long. I need some more winter activities." And so yeah, I decided to do it.
• 10:37
Um, but I also, it coincides with CrossFit Games right now, and so I was like, "I am already burnt out. I don't wanna race this," because I'm super competitive. But they still timed me apparently. Huh, apparently.
• 10:49
And I'm a little bit peeved about it. And, and so- So I literally was at a water station for at least 30 minutes just helping a girl 'cause she was breaking down.
• 10:56
Well, then let's take 30 minutes off your time, and then that'll show where you finished. Helping a girl? In other words, you were drinking shots. And, yeah. And I stopped. [laughs] I was following.
• 11:04
So I was the only person on the course that I stumbled upon that had music. So I was like DJing people, and like they would like follow me up hills, or they'd be walking and I would just like sit there cheering them on.
• 11:15
And then I stumbled upon this group that was literally just in a little powwow on a top of one hill. And I was like, "Oh, are you guys okay?" And they're like, "Yeah, we're just drinking shots over here."
• 11:24
And I was like, "Shots?" [laughs] Shots you silly. "Well, I guess I'll be taking a pit stop." And so I stopped and I was taking shots, and then I was hanging out with those guys.
• 11:32
'Cause I was supposed to be doing a fun run, or a fun ride. Yeah. Told you. [laughs] He's a breather. It's fine. We have to breathe. Was it happening right now? Shit. [laughs] It's happening. [laughs] Is it happening?
• 11:44
It's happening. Chewy, Chewy, Chewy's like, "I had to get Spinner a microphone-" Spinner... 'cause he's like [snores]. Yeah. I have a heavy nose bre- I don't... Ugh. Is that code for something? I haven't- It is...
• 11:55
I haven't- Deacon's gotta breathe... noticed. I don't know. I'm a big guy. [laughs] Uh, but it, sorry. Didn't mean to interrupt you. Although we did mean to.
• 12:02
So the whole idea here, though, was that, uh, that Chewy is actually gonna take this show over. And I don't know how come he's so meek and is just sitting there not saying anything. But, uh- Because they're talking.
• 12:09
They're tell- they're explaining stuff. It's not, it's not bullshit, so [laughs] I- Well, the-... that's why I'm not bull- The one thing I always go for is as little as I can talk, the better. Yeah. So you guys.
• 12:20
What did you guys- Well, it's nice to have actually people- Yeah. What are you- It's nice to have people that actually rode the course. Yeah. 'Cause I- I wasn't gonna come up here.
• 12:26
It's state high school hockey tournament time, so I was gonna do that stuff instead. Mm-hmm. And then the last minute, Spinner decided to stop up and pick me up, and, uh, we- Yeah, just called you and like- I-...
• 12:37
"Am I going through La Crosse or am I going through Rochester? Where do I go?" [laughs] I mean, basically. I didn't even know you were coming.
• 12:41
You, you- I sent you a selfie like, [laughs] "I'm at the Berkey and I'm drinking, bud." And then you're like, "I'm at the Som-" I- And I was like- I sent her this picture that was like-... "Wait, is that a bar here?
• 12:50
You're doing the fucking Berkey, what?" [laughs] I sent her a picture. We talked about doing this a while ago and I'm like, "I can't. I, it's high school hockey tournament, I can't go. Like, I've never gone."
• 12:57
And then she sends me the picture from... What bar were you guys at? Uh, the Rivers Eatery. Yeah. Yeah. And then so [laughs] she sends me a picture, she's been there.
• 13:05
So I hold my phone up and at a bad angle so it's dark. And all you can see is- You made a bad picture on purpose... just, you could, yeah, you can just barely see the TV in the corner.
• 13:11
I said, "We are at an un- at an undisclosed bar." [laughs] All I saw was a T-shirt that said like, "Norris College" on it and I was like, "I'm pretty sure that's Spinner."
• 13:19
[laughs] And then finally, then I had, then I had to finally fess up we're 10 miles away at a bar. [laughs] Yeah. But it was- Yeah. And I, and I, and I didn't wanna race, I don't think.
• 13:29
But then I, once I got up here and looked at it, it's like I kinda wanted to race. Well, I- It would, it would... you don't wanna do this course on a single speed. That's what... Well, that was- Negatory, good buddy.
• 13:39
Yeah. D- that's where you kind of talked me out of it. And then as we- 'Cause I did it for four years and it was fucking dumb.
• 13:43
[laughs] As we sat in the bar all night long and, and, and actually, and then talking to Jerry Wright, actually talked me back into doing it on a single speed because- The full 47K?
• 13:51
Yeah, because he was like, "Oh dude, that's not gonna be icy, it's gonna be fine. You're gonna be able to get traction. You're gonna climb. You're gonna go fast, it's gonna be fast.
• 13:58
You're gonna be fine on a single speed." That was Jerry Wright talking last night. Yeah, Jerry Wright. Yeah, Jerry Wright, the judge. Judge Jerry. A lying fucking judge. And ex- And as a liar, yeah.
• 14:06
[laughs] There's no way. But the trails were- So, okay, so-... freaking primo- Are-... and they were fast... primo? They were primed up. Not for- Ready to roll. Okay. Yeah, for the little kids race or whatever you did.
• 14:17
[laughs] But it was [laughs] the- Okay. We're not friends anymore... the 47K is- For the record, Kayla is no longer friends with Spinner. Okay, bye.
• 14:24
[laughs] I mean, but for, for the big race, I mean, it's, there's, it's all punchy hills and it's not something that you can roll. You can never just roll it. So- Come on in. So is it- Oh, there's Celie Davis coming in.
• 14:35
Hey. Celie Davis is here. So then is it, is it- The boss is here... you guys would know, is it basically the same thing as you do the Chequamegon 40? I like the cocktail. Is it those same rolly hills?
• 14:43
Stop moving your thing around. I'm not. I didn't- Stop, touch it. Don't touch it. Stop touching your thing. I just wanted to say- That's what she said... for the record... [laughs] Don't touch it.
• 14:51
[laughs] That's never what she says. [laughs] Um, no, uh, uh, so our, our buddy...
• 14:59
Okay, so on the single speed thing, our buddy Mike did the mid fat or not the baby fat, like whatever the tiny one is, but the mid one, 21K, on a single speed.
• 15:10
Awesome bike, very light, and he was like, "If I had to have done that 47, I would've died." Well, that's my point. Yeah.
• 15:16
If it's like the regular Chequamegon 40, let's say, are th- are those type of courses where it's just down, up, down, all it- It is. It's the same course... it's, it's miserable, it's miserable in the summer.
• 15:25
I can't imagine what it's like- Yeah... on snow. It, yeah. 'Cause you don't, you can't keep going that fast downhill in the snow. 40, and you cannot get going fast enough to get up the hill.
• 15:33
You would have to walk- Right. Right... probably half the race. Yeah. I'm not even kidding. [laughs] I'm like, I'm not, I'm not even- Well, you've done it before, so you know... I'm not into walking. Yeah.
• 15:41
And you're, you're, you can ride hills better than I can. Yeah.
• 15:45
But it's a lot of picking your lines, like when, 'cause if the trail's 20 feet wide, I'm literally looking like if it's at a angle, I'm like, "It's shorter over there." [laughs] Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
• 15:54
I'm going like, you know me and I'm gonna pick the line to the, the short side. And one thing that re- Hey, zipper heads, pipe down over there.
• 16:01
One thing, [laughs] one thing that really sucks is, uh, you know, you have to carry your speed on a hill.
• 16:06
And especially when you start and there's hundreds of people in there, and you're going down the hill and you try to carry your speed, and everybody in front of you is going click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, getting in your way, and they're going slow, and they're starting to fucking go to the side.
• 16:18
Oh, well- And now you can't carry your speed without hitting somebody. There is that. That's, that's always been- Can you throw your beer can at those guys? Hey, pipe down over there. [can clicks] Stop it. [laughs] Yeah.
• 16:27
That's always been the thing with, uh, on a single speed. [laughs] Excuse me. Oh, your, your conversation's much more important than our listeners listening to our conversation, huh? Yeah. Okay then.
• 16:36
Dude, we can't enjoy yours, so we're just gonna have our own. Yeah. Well, you're having your own with us too. Go in the b- go in the corner. [laughs] Why don't you go in the bedroom over there and...
• 16:43
[laughs] Shut the door and come out in another half hour. Shut the door and shut the fuck up. [laughs] An hour and a half. Nice. Yeah. So th- th- there, there's a nap included in in that. Oh, well. Cuddle time. Yeah.
• 16:55
Big cuddle time is important. [laughs] Uh, but single speed, riding a single speed with a group of guys on geared bikes is, especially like riding in Decorah, you always run into that problem anyway. It's the same thing.
• 17:05
They get to the bottom of the hill and it's a big climb, and you wanna get some momentum to at least make it up part of it, if not all of it.
• 17:10
And they hit the bottom of it and they go click, click, click, click, and they spin like a son of a bitch, and they're not going.
• 17:15
They're going half a mile an hour, but they, they climb all the way to the top and it's like, "Well, goody for you. Now I get to fucking walk because you decided to switch into ultra granny gear." Yeah.
• 17:25
So you can't just ride around them with your massive speed? No. Not, no. Think about the trails in Decorah. It's all single track. Yeah. There's no passing. Yeah. And one side's always uphill and one side's downhill.
• 17:35
It's all off camber. [laughs] Yeah. There isn't a good passing zone. Yeah. But... But it did look like fun out there today. I mean, it was, looks like everybody's having a good time.
• 17:43
The course looked like a snowed highway. It was awesome. I didn't see any crashes. I, I see crashes every year. Didn't see any one this year.
• 17:49
Well, like- I'd already put a bet on myself that I was gonna crash at least three times, and I did not crash a single time. But like you and I were saying, how many, how many people carrying- Congratulations, Anya.
• 17:59
[laughs] 'Cause mountain biking, I'm like notorious for crashing. [laughs] What were you riding for a bike today, Kayla? I have my specialized- Don't say specialized. Ooh... but I'm gonna mention it. Special...
• 18:08
I, I'm special. They're direct to consumer now- Yes... by the way. Thank you specialized for fucking the independent bike shop. I don't care. They make bikes and I go fast. You weren't a specialized dealer, were you?
• 18:18
Hell no. Okay. Well, I've never been- I would never be any of the big, you know, threes or fives... so the guys, so the guy, the bike, the company that- Or it's 10...
• 18:24
just told you this year that you need to sell 20% more bikes, and we're sending them to you whether you like it or not. And is now saying, "Oh, by the way, you don't have to sell any bikes. We'll sell them for you."
• 18:33
Yeah. We're gonna sell them online, and then we're not even gonna send them to you. We'll just send them to the customer. Don't worry about it. Do they pay- Well, do they do-... the bike shop in the territory or what?
• 18:41
Yeah. Are they do- so they, are they doing direct to the customer, and the customer... So they're doing like state where you, you have to take it into a shop and have it assembled for it to be warrantied? Maybe.
• 18:49
Well, you get a one-year warranty with state... if you do it yourself, and you get a five-year if- If you do it yourself... you have it assembled at a reputable shop that knows what they're doing.
• 18:57
Which is not me, by the way. Well, but you do sell some state bicycles. Oh, I do. I do. [laughs] And then the one I fucked up on, so that's a- Speaking of- I think about Captain...
• 19:04
speaking of State bicycles, those Wu-Tang ones are really cool. Do you like them? I saw. I do. Did you put a picture of them up there? Dave has the yellow one for his lady. I just like the color. Yeah, they look fun.
• 19:15
I want, I, if- Dave returned. [laughs] I have a clunker, but I might be buying another one- You want, do you want a-... after I do my Karate Monkey. Do you need a Wu-Tang? What, what's the date today? I forgot.
• 19:21
Oh, I think we have a few more days before we can say what their new 4130 bikes are. I think we have to wait till the 15th or something. Oh, okay. Do you like embargoing? I hate that. I, no, yeah, I know.
• 19:31
Because I- Can I, can you say is it a different com- what is it called, the, a new clunker, or is it a bike that you can- No, they, they're basically gonna redo their existing 4130 line of, like, their single speeds and stuff.
• 19:46
Eh. Aw. But tune in next week because they're pretty badass. They are. Well, make two more badass.
• 19:54
But if, but if, but if you'd like a Wu-Tang, we need to order it right away because I don't think they're gonna last long. I d- I haven't even gotten- I don't know enough-... the single speeds yet...
• 20:00
about it other than it looks pretty... but you got, but you got the... Yeah. Yeah, it looks pretty. That's all I know. And, and, but you got the clunker. Yes. That came in.
• 20:07
And did you know- But the, but the other two that I ordered, the single speeds, have not shown up yet. Oh, okay. I, uh, I don't have room for any... The single speeds.
• 20:15
I was gonna get a clunker too, but I'm, like, I'm, like, struggling for space in my shop/garage. Thank God you got rid of that ECR into my car. I know. Thank you. [laughs] I'll take the bamboo bike after I re- No...
• 20:26
finish my bike. Yeah. It just looks pretty. Why, why would anybody make a bike out of bamboo? No, no, you want to hang it- It just looks cool... do you want to hang it at your house instead of my house? You can have it.
• 20:32
Is it a boo bicycle, bamboo bike? It would look great on a wall. No, no, it's actually from Vietnam. Don't- Yeah. That's where boo bicycles are from... I have like a huge empty garage- So maybe this isn't...
• 20:39
and it's really pretty, and I'm gonna have all these bikes. I don't know. The, uh, the headset and the, uh, and the bottom bracket are literally a piece of pipe threaded, and they're horribly done.
• 20:47
Like, I have yet to find a bottom bracket I can put in there. Oh, that's probably not a boo, but they do have a plantation- Yeah... or did, in Vietnam that did the bamboo. And it's like, it weighs like 95 pounds.
• 20:57
It's ridiculously heavy. Like- They're also really dead feeling to me. They don't have... Like, e- I'm sure that you get one bamboo bike, it's different than the next one because it's a piece of literal growing thing.
• 21:08
Yeah. And some of them felt really just, like, dead. Very dead. Like- Like sup- no, no liveliness to it. No, no chromoly good feel, you know? No, I don't. [laughs] No, because you ride a carbon bike now. Yeah, carbon.
• 21:23
I ride it once a year. There. God damn it. Yeah, you can't say anything 'cause you ride all carbon bikes. I will proudly ride my carbon bikes, and I'll always be like five miles ahead of you. [laughs] Ooh, cocky. Wow.
• 21:35
Wow. Man. I am cocky. Pat's got nothing to do with the bike. He's got nothing- This is the one that's finished 48th out of 50... nothing at all. Yeah, you- 'Cause I was partying. We were- It was my goal.
• 21:45
She went from 50- Did you take shots on your ride? I don't think so. I did. Did you, McCain? I got a beer hand up. Mm. Okay. All right. So- [laughs] So, okay. So, okay. Wait. Okay. So, wait. Okay. So- George- [laughs]
• 21:57
George Capitz, who finished 78th today, I think, from Broken Spoke, is now at... Okay, he said we're gonna be at the Sawmill at 7:00-ish. It's now 8:23. Real gl- glad we- And he said, "Where are you at?" Glad we waited.
• 22:10
Yeah, thank God we- We waited and waited... stayed there. I kinda wanna just go do the course again just to see what my real time will be because I'm so mad. Yeah. Oh my God. Still mad about it.
• 22:20
It's gonna be the same as the one before- You were mad because-... 'cause you're gonna stop and have a shot- You were mad because it weren't peo-... and you're gonna listen to- Yeah.
• 22:23
You were mad because it weren't gonna take your time, then you're mad because it did take your time. No, I- Would you make up your fucking mind... purposely did the 10K because I did not wanna be timed.
• 22:31
See, this is the problem with the Birkie. It attracts the roadies. [laughs] And then you have to put up with their shit. [laughs] That's a very good call, by the way. [laughs] Hate you both.
• 22:40
[laughs] Love you, but, like, hate you. Okay? Okay. So back to, um, the clunkers. So what makes a Wu-Tang different than, like, the State, like, clunkers? Yellow paint. Yeah, paint job. Yellow paint. Yeah.
• 22:54
Literally just the aesthetics. And a collabor- collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan. I w- we know a guy that would paint one for you. If you want it green. You want, you, you- Can you add glitter? [laughs] No. Yeah.
• 23:02
We're not doing glitter. We're not talking about glittery helmets or any of that shit anymore. Stop it. I just wanna wear my hoe boots and have my extra glitter on my bike. You got some hoe boots?
• 23:11
I always wear my hoe boots. Are those hoe boots? Those are- That's all she has... those are snow boots. Those are my hoe boots [laughs] Those are snow hoe boots. Snow hoe boots. Snow, snow hoe boots. Yeah.
• 23:20
Speaking of, are we going to Phipps tonight? Um, maybe. Maybe? [laughs] It's well over three miles from here, I believe. That... Did you buy those? We can always ride there. That'd be funny. Nice.
• 23:31
Could we- Don't you have a clunker? The Phipps? Okay, here's... There's Dave. See Dave over there? There's Dave. Dave, Dave and Kayla are conversing in the background. Dave, what did you do with Dave?
• 23:40
I was not allowed to- I just texted George too. I said we waited till 7:01, and we left. I'm still not sorry. But we're gonna go back there. Are we? Yeah. Yeah. In, like, four minutes.
• 23:49
[laughs] Four minutes, start the clock. This could possibly be the first podcast that s- stays to the 30 minutes 'cause we need to get to a bar. Yeah, no, we have to go because otherwise George will leave.
• 23:58
We got a 30 pack of Hamm's. Um- Say whatever you want. What else we gotta talk about? We can go back there. Oh, the official date is set. Oh. So we have a place.
• 24:07
This is gonna be the announcement for the official, finally confirmation of SingleSpeed USA. Oh, but we haven't even planned the non-official plan- That's right. [laughs]... planning thing yet. You haven't planned yet.
• 24:17
This- No, uh-... this will air before that. Yeah, probably. Well. No. August 20th. It will be August 20th. We got the Elks confirmed. Oh, so, uh- Woo-hoo... oh, nice. Yeah. Okay. All right, that'll... Okay.
• 24:27
Okay, all right. So this will be as, as, as Pat put it, this will be the whitest white version [laughs] of SingleSpeed USA ever 'cause it's being held in the Midwest at an Elks- He was super concerned about the brochure.
• 24:38
[laughs] It was very entertaining to hear him list off all the- It was like, it was like you're held to get... in the Midwest at an Elks club.
• 24:46
[laughs] It just kept going on and on and on, and we couldn't have made this any more milk toast white than we could have possibly. And he just... It was killing him.
• 24:53
[laughs] He says so many things that it's just like, "Well, yeah." [laughs] Like I remember when he went to Singlespeed Wisconsin, and he's like, "Is all you fuckers do is eat meat, potatoes, and cheese?"
• 25:03
And we're like- Well, not po- What, what- Not potatoes that much... well, I looked at him like, "What kind of-" Why, why would you do that? Why would you ruin your meat and cheese intake? "...
• 25:09
food do you have in Arizona? What's different?" You know? It's like [clears throat] Well, and, and don't forget, he's actually from Chicago. Yeah. And he had to fly to do the planning session with you guys' wife.
• 25:19
He, he- So he could get platinum status on- Yeah... Delta or whatever... exactly, or on, on American Airlines... so it can match his girlfriend's mileage. Oh, my God. So he can ride with his girlfriend.
• 25:26
Otherwise, he has to sit in coach or something. She can't pay the extra couple bucks? Was there like a time limit on that? Why didn't he come down like this weekend? Otherwise, he has to wear a leash, so he's like, "Oh."
• 25:33
[laughs] No, there was a time- Hey, you know, different strokes for different folks I hope he listens to this. [laughs] Okay. [laughs] Scandinavian Jesus. This whole time it was [imitates whipping sound] [laughs]
• 25:41
I do do... Yeah. I enjoy that. You do that too? You, what? You enjoy that? [laughs] Okay, somebody else write that down, please. It's recorded. [laughs] I don't think Kayla's been to Phipps yet. No, obviously not.
• 25:55
I'm down. [laughs] Dave, we're going to Phipps. Awesome. All right then. [laughs] Well, yeah. So you got some good photos. I did. I think I got some good photos.
• 26:06
I was concentrating on, A, finding people I knew, and Spinner being one of them, 'cause he's very easy to find, 'cause he wore shorts.
• 26:14
[laughs] Normally, he would wear a, a cutoff sleeve shirt too with bare arms, and not- Yeah... this year, though. I've seen his, uh- It was a little cold... super fun- Yeah, it was cold out, but-...
• 26:24
Mikey costume that I was fully anticipating he was gonna show up in. Yeah. And then, um- I'm glad he didn't... there were some jerseys I was looking for, the Broken Spoke crew, the Lemur crew. Yeah.
• 26:32
You know, a couple other people there I was like, "I-" You mean, you mean that company that now sells carbon electric fucking bicycles? For 12 five. Jesus Christ. Get over it. [laughs] Full suspension, though. Oh, yeah.
• 26:41
They're full suspension, though. Let's, that's right. They're down- [laughs] Dad just keeps- Let's just- Oh... let's just throw something else in there that really pisses me off.
• 26:48
[laughs] That bicycle costs more than every vehicle I own. [laughs] Yeah, you also, you got the kind of chip on your shoulder, 'cause I don't know. No, that's just my, that's just my injury. That's just, right.
• 26:57
That's a broken collarbone. [laughs] That's right. [laughs] That's, that's my AC se- joint separation. Want to touch it? Yeah. I've felt broken collarbo- oh, that is, ooh. Ooh, that is, ooh, ah.
• 27:08
That's, ooh, that's an oofah. It's, it's hard and pointy. [laughs] What, so what, that didn't happen when you ran into the wall and got your face all bloody, did it? No, no, this was, like, the start of my crashing.
• 27:16
It was, uh- The start of your crashing [laughs] back in 1996. No. This had actually, this is the start of my, this is- '76. [laughs] This is when, this is when I started actually crashing and leaving dents in my body.
• 27:29
Like, so this was, um, they'd cut grooves in the road to put tar in there, but the groove- Do we need to pull his shirt taut so you can see? [laughs] I just wanted to see the Carzar coffins thing, really.
• 27:39
Hey, Hurl, uh, it's Chewy. He's wearing one of your shirts. Yeah.
• 27:42
Do you remember, so we, uh, when we did the podcast in, uh, uh, S- uh, at Maine, it was really funny, 'cause I was sitting there and a guy comes up and goes, "Chewy, do you need a beer?" And he touches my shoulder.
• 27:52
He goes, "Ooh." Okay. "AC joint separation." He goes, "Yep." He goes, "Three?" "Oh, yeah, three." And some guy walks over and literally takes his shirt off and goes, "Ha, four." And that sucker was- [laughs]...
• 28:00
a spike sticking out of his shoulder. And I go, "Well, they didn't operate?" He goes, "No." They said, "No, we're not gonna fix that either."
• 28:05
So there, we're all, the badge of honor is all, he had this one spike sticking up for his shoulder. Yeah, there was one guy that took his shirt off.
• 28:10
A s- a slight guy, he's very thin, during, right after the, uh, the Birkie Today, and he had this thing. It was like- Yeah...
• 28:17
[sings] And, and it's like a, it's like a, it's like a bicycle ri- a lot of, you know, it's a, it's a hard injury where you crash your shoulder in the ground and, and the ligaments and everything let loose.
• 28:26
And there's really- Whoa... they can fix it, but it's really painful, and it- Yeah... doesn't, it's, like, literally tying wires and tying shit together because it's- Yeah... there's not bone that's broke.
• 28:35
It's just- It's not really com- Yeah... it's not really- Yeah, it looks hurting... hurting you for your being alive portion of your- No, I can still drink... aliveness...
• 28:40
I can still do things with this hand, like- Do you have the same injury? Is there a range of- Yeah. [laughs] It's like- From a PT side- You, the, uh, yeah... can I see your range of motion on each shoulder?
• 28:48
You s- oh, for crying out loud. Actually, yeah, that's impressive. Well, that one's a little better. I have clients with, like, broken shoulders, and they, or they can't- Can you do this? Like, hardly go...
• 28:58
[laughs] Yeah, I already tested that out- I- [laughs]... like, after the Birkie. [laughs] Yes. [laughs] So- They were driving past me- I-... and I put my middle finger up... I double middle finger.
• 29:06
I told you guys, so- Poor Pete was ahead of me, and he's like, "I just got the New York hell- hello here." [laughs] I know, I was like sh- I was like, "Sorry, that was all me." [laughs] She was behind.
• 29:16
I, I realized I did that too, 'cause I saw her finger from behind you, and you were waving, and I went double barrel. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] And then you were like, "Oh, my gosh. Oops." [laughs] Oh, my gosh.
• 29:26
I could barely bike I was laughing so hard. [laughs] But you explained it. I, I will say this- I did. I was like, "I started this." [laughs] There's been a lot of laughing this weekend. Oh, th- this has been hilarious.
• 29:35
This has been a great weekend. My Chico meter is on point. Is it? Yeah. It, it was, uh, it started last night- [laughs]... um, at, at Sawmill. Yeah.
• 29:43
And the, and the bullshit has just gone straight- Our $400 night at Sawmill. Oh, yes. Good Lord, we spent- $400? Well- Like, $400. Well, we- $6 a beer... yeah, with the, the, so the guy- And we drank-...
• 29:52
who owns this place, we offered to buy his, you offered- Yeah... to buy his thing, not realizing that they ate, like, six meals and 900 beers. Yeah. Yeah. They, uh, they, they- Compare to our own 900 beers...
• 30:02
they put them away, I'll tell you that much. [laughs] Yeah. No, I think they- They drank with us... I think they- They didn't do anything out of the normal... no, they were there before we were there. Yeah, no.
• 30:09
Plus, I think they said, "Rocky, pad that thing with, like, 50 extra bucks please." Yeah? [laughs] No. [laughs] Because it was- Did you tap? I don't know... it was insane, yeah.
• 30:16
No, I would, it, the fact that they had this weekend open because of a cancellation, and, uh, Dave and his wife Liz are very, very generous with letting us stay here essentially for nothing. Yeah.
• 30:28
And the least we can do is- Which is that, yeah, thank you for inviting-... buy them... inviting me up here, because I was gonna stay at the- Well, we talk about theirs a lot, because this- Yeah...
• 30:34
place is where anybody that comes up here should at least check this place out at least once.
• 30:38
And we're not even a mile from the Rome Adventure Base Camp, which is right down the road, another great place to check out, so. You can see the hill trails right straight behind, correct?
• 30:46
Yeah, we can actually ride out of our door. Right there is a trail that starts, and we can go up to Gordie's Zoo and then get on the CAMBA trails, right from the front door. Yeah.
• 30:56
So this is a fan- and it's a beautiful place to stay. Yeah. On top of everything else. Yeah. For sure. All right. Hey, guess what? We what? Uh, we, we did it again. Oh, you're cutting us off? No. Is it? I don't know.
• 31:07
Why, do you have anything else you wanna say? No, I just like talking about bikes. We've already talked longer than your race took, so. Yeah, right. [laughs] Aw. No, we haven't talked over an hour yet.
• 31:19
He just, I- The, the, the winner of her race were, was 31 minutes... well, yeah. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, I probably could have been that for the record. I'm glad I'm across the table- Oh... I'm without headphones. Oh, no.
• 31:30
You should be. I remember, I remember- Notice how I'm, like, moving objects- I, I, I... to the side.
• 31:33
[laughs] I remember walking up to the starting line with the, this young lady who said that, "I need to know where the course is at.
• 31:40
I'm a little worried about getting lost, because I'm gonna be the first person out of there." Oh. Oh. Don't, don't point that thing at me. That's- I'm just, that's my confirmation.
• 31:50
I'm just, I'm- I did say that So I've never heard of somebody getting bounced out of the Birkie. You're the first person I've ever known to get bounced out of the Birkie. Me? Yes. I don't think they'll like me up here.
• 31:57
Dude, you would've had so much fun if you were biking with me today. I probably, I should have been. I'm pretty sure JP doesn't like you up here. [laughs] Oh. No, yeah. So yeah, so that was totally fun.
• 32:06
Well, we were like- He was just-... "Where's Ron?" Oh, he's, he's over dialoguing JP and the crew back there. I, I was like [laughs]... Well, it was because, uh, uh, Bill, uh... Franken? Franken was there with his son.
• 32:18
And so I was- Shea? And my oldest son, Tanner, used to work with Shea. And then I know, I've known Bill from riding around Rochester. He's a- He's a JP LaMarre- And, uh, and-... employee or what? Uh, Shane is, yeah.
• 32:28
Shea, like, designs and makes all the frames now. Yeah. All the titanium- Or the bike frames, yeah... all their open mold frames, which anybody can buy. [laughs] No.
• 32:36
Sh- Well, he, like, converts them back and forth- He's the one that said, "Hey, we can put a hole-"... but like he talks with, yeah Well, he doesn't even, he doesn't even couch the fact that they buy open mold frames.
• 32:42
He loves it. It's like- Well, right, well-... well, these are the guys that make stuff for Specialized and Trek and everybody else, Giant, and we can buy- Same geometry?
• 32:50
Not, well, not necess- No, you, you- You can buy whatever they make when they're not making the other bikes. And, and- They're not bad designers over there. It's just like- No... can you design?
• 32:59
If, if you wanted it- Well, so Bill was telling Pete and I when we were over there conversing, 'cause I asked him, I was like, "Do you guys actually make in-house?" And they were like, "No, nobody that does-" Outsourced.
• 33:07
Yeah. Everybody does. Nobody that does carbon does it in-house. It's all overseas. Not in the United States of America, anyway. But JP stayed over in, was it Taiwan? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, for, like, two, two or three years.
• 33:17
It was a quite a... And he- Yeah... s- he scouted out, like, who is actually legit and who- Yeah... is just making pure garbage. No, he's a very smart guy about it, for sure. Yeah.
• 33:24
Oh yeah, he actually did his homework on it. If you like carbon fiber bikes. Yeah. Yeah, if you want a plastic bike, that's just fine. [laughs] I like to go fast. He's got a hell of a big hand. Well, the, well, yeah.
• 33:31
You can go fast on a steel bike, too. I- Well, maybe you can't... can. It's not enjoyable. Okay, okay, Spinner. Well, sure as heck not. I heard that. I kept up with the shields group on my- I, I can't stand it anymore...
• 33:41
Shi- I basically had a one speed for, like, 10 years. Thank God we're done with this show, right? My point, my point exactly. [laughs] And the fade of the music and... [laughs] You don't- Yeah, there we go.
• 33:48
Okay, thank you for your opinions. [laughs] Oh, we, we have fun here. [laughs] Yeah, bye. Bye. See ya. Have a good one.
• 33:57
  [upbeat music]
