- 0:00Dave Hamilton: Business Brain episode 743 for casual Friday.
- 0:04Dave Hamilton: I April 10th, International Safety Pin Day 2026. Welcome back.
- 0:11Shannon Jean: It's Business Brain.
- 0:13Dave Hamilton: Is it?
- 0:14Shannon Jean: Shannon and Dave.
- 0:37Dave Hamilton: Hey, and welcome to Business Brain, the show where we take some ideas,
- 0:42Dave Hamilton: we crunch them, we dissect them, we use them to tune our business brains so
- 0:47Dave Hamilton: that we can keep on living those charmed lives.
- 0:50Dave Hamilton: And we do it twice a week, every single week, for as long as time exists or
- 0:57Dave Hamilton: until we figure out something else to do.
- 1:00Dave Hamilton: Our sponsors are bitdefender.com slash brain, where you can go and save 30%
- 1:05Dave Hamilton: on Bitdefender Ultimate Small Business Security, and quickbooks.com slash workforce,
- 1:11Dave Hamilton: where you can... Oh, man, they're doing so many cool things.
- 1:14Dave Hamilton: We'll just talk about it in a little bit. For now, here in Durham,
- 1:17Dave Hamilton: New Hampshire, I'm Dave Hamilton.
- 1:19Shannon Jean: And out here in Northern California, I'm Shannon Jean. How are you, man?
- 1:21Dave Hamilton: I'm good. You teased it up in the last episode, But without saying the name Medvi,
- 1:30Dave Hamilton: you referred to Medvi, which is the first AI-fueled this, and it is the first
- 1:37Dave Hamilton: billion-dollar solopreneur out there. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:43Shannon Jean: That's interesting. And so he's selling like a GLP products kind of thing or
- 1:50Shannon Jean: referring people to, I think there's GLP.
- 1:56Shannon Jean: Uh involved in this yeah i don't know if it's uh i don't know if they actually
- 2:01Shannon Jean: sell it or they're making money
- 2:03Shannon Jean: because they refer you to a carrier that you then go and get it to no i
- 2:07Dave Hamilton: Think i think that's right i think they i think they um it's telehealth that
- 2:12Dave Hamilton: that gets you on the path to glp ones okay that's right yeah.
- 2:16Shannon Jean: Yeah it's pretty pretty wild i mean he basically used everything right?
- 2:20Shannon Jean: He used Claude, ChachyPT, Grok to build the whole nine yards.
- 2:26Dave Hamilton: Yeah, to write the code, build the website, generate the marketing copy,
- 2:29Dave Hamilton: and even handle customer service.
- 2:31Dave Hamilton: He says, we're not an AI company, or it's not an AI company,
- 2:39Dave Hamilton: but I did it with AI, Matthew Gallagher.
- 2:42Dave Hamilton: Yeah, and I can attest to this.
- 2:45Dave Hamilton: We've started things in the last few months
- 2:48Dave Hamilton: that are all just like the the
- 2:53Dave Hamilton: ability for one
- 2:56Dave Hamilton: person to the the
- 2:59Dave Hamilton: advantage that one person can gain
- 3:02Dave Hamilton: using ai tools the right way when
- 3:06Dave Hamilton: looking at what tools have done for us
- 3:09Dave Hamilton: over the course of human history i think this one might be the most powerful
- 3:16Dave Hamilton: in terms of the leverage that it gives you yeah doesn't mean that we're all
- 3:19Dave Hamilton: going to be successful no using it um but but they it's a huge lever it's a huge lever yeah yeah.
- 3:29Shannon Jean: It's like moving the earth with the biggest piece of pipe or wood you could get your hands on.
- 3:35Dave Hamilton: Yeah.
- 3:35Shannon Jean: It's like if you know what a cheater bar is, like if you ever have a bolt that's
- 3:40Shannon Jean: super stuck and you go get a long piece of pipe and you put it on your big pipe
- 3:44Shannon Jean: wrench or whatever it is.
- 3:46Shannon Jean: And it gives you this massive leverage. Well, that's what AI does now,
- 3:50Dave Hamilton: Right? That's what it does. Steve Jobs famously in the 80s when the Mac first
- 3:57Dave Hamilton: came out, he talked about the computer as the bicycle for the mind.
- 4:04Dave Hamilton: He referred to this study that had been done that showed the speeds of land animals.
- 4:12Dave Hamilton: And now I even forget. Maybe the cheetah was at the top of the list or something.
- 4:17Dave Hamilton: I mean, there were the obvious ones that were there at the top. Yeah.
- 4:20Dave Hamilton: Right. And then the human humans were like, you know, 17th or maybe 70th. I don't know.
- 4:27Dave Hamilton: Yeah. Way down. But a human on a bicycle made the list inconsequential because
- 4:36Dave Hamilton: the human on the bicycle using the human's brain to build the bicycle.
- 4:41Dave Hamilton: And then right. Like that changed the entire calculus.
- 4:45Dave Hamilton: Yeah. Right. and and his he
- 4:48Dave Hamilton: thought of computers as the bicycle of the mind or
- 4:51Dave Hamilton: bicycle for the mind and uh and
- 4:55Dave Hamilton: so like you know i like i think i think this might be i know you need computers
- 5:03Dave Hamilton: to use ai so like i'm you know you can't do one without the other but i think
- 5:08Dave Hamilton: this might be a faster bicycle by many orders of magnitude than just having
- 5:13Dave Hamilton: a computer right you know Yeah.
- 5:15Shannon Jean: I would agree. I think it's just a great example of how every business...
- 5:24Shannon Jean: Should be implementing this or to make yourself sound better look better yeah
- 5:29Shannon Jean: connect with your people better save time save money you know all those kinds
- 5:34Shannon Jean: of things um yeah i think it's awesome i want to talk do you want to chat about
- 5:40Shannon Jean: one of my favorite tools that i'm starting to use this week um
- 5:43Dave Hamilton: I i do but i think we're gonna talk i think i i'm gonna let's do that in in
- 5:49Dave Hamilton: the second half of the episode.
- 5:51Dave Hamilton: Okay. Because I just want to share a quick thing about Claude's research mode.
- 5:58Shannon Jean: Okay.
- 5:59Dave Hamilton: I've been using this, and Claude certainly uses Claude's models, or Anthropics models.
- 6:07Dave Hamilton: Claude is an app that uses it from a company called Anthropic.
- 6:12Dave Hamilton: I know I'm being pedantic here, but I'm doing it for a reason.
- 6:16Dave Hamilton: Claude is a an app or an interface
- 6:19Dave Hamilton: because you can use the web for it too that okay from anthropic that uses ai
- 6:25Dave Hamilton: models that are also from anthropic some of those ai models are like haiku sonnet
- 6:30Dave Hamilton: opus right but claude is the app claude is the interface and you can use.
- 6:40Dave Hamilton: Anthropics models with perplexity, right? Like they're built into it.
- 6:47Dave Hamilton: You're not going to get the same results out of perplexity using Claude's Opus
- 6:50Dave Hamilton: model that you are from using Anthropics model, the Opus model that you are
- 6:55Dave Hamilton: out of Claude. And it's because the app is better.
- 6:58Dave Hamilton: Oh, they go. The research mode is specific.
- 7:01Dave Hamilton: And there are a lot of reasons that that Claude is better than perplexity in terms of the app.
- 7:07Dave Hamilton: OK. Claude code being one of them. Claude co-work being another.
- 7:10Dave Hamilton: But just regular Claude with its research model, the results that it spits out
- 7:18Dave Hamilton: are so far and beyond anything that I see.
- 7:23Dave Hamilton: So you go into the Claude app, you turn on research by hitting,
- 7:26Dave Hamilton: I think you got to hit the plus key or whatever it is to, you know,
- 7:29Dave Hamilton: yeah, you add research. You can turn on like, you can turn on various things,
- 7:34Dave Hamilton: web search, research, et cetera. And.
- 7:37Dave Hamilton: When you turn on research mode, it'll run for several minutes.
- 7:41Dave Hamilton: It'll go do all the things it needs to do. And then it presents either a PDF
- 7:46Dave Hamilton: or a markdown file, whatever format you want,
- 7:48Dave Hamilton: that is like a full research paper written about your topic using whatever resources
- 7:55Dave Hamilton: you told it to use or whatever resources it decided to use.
- 7:59Dave Hamilton: And it is amazing. the
- 8:02Dave Hamilton: up that like yes it takes it five minutes
- 8:05Dave Hamilton: to do it but a human doing this again
- 8:08Dave Hamilton: bicycle for the mind would be like i don't know a
- 8:12Dave Hamilton: week maybe yeah uh and and it
- 8:14Dave Hamilton: is so and it's packaged up really nicely and
- 8:17Dave Hamilton: then of course you can say this is great i don't want to read
- 8:20Dave Hamilton: seven pages right now summarize this for
- 8:23Dave Hamilton: me focusing on x and of course it'll do
- 8:26Dave Hamilton: that because it knows how to do that uh and and
- 8:29Dave Hamilton: you can iterate it too it's still interactive when
- 8:32Dave Hamilton: claude delivers you one of these research things you can say hey you
- 8:35Dave Hamilton: know i told you about the five things to research and
- 8:38Dave Hamilton: you did that but did you look to see if i missed something in my initial list
- 8:43Dave Hamilton: of five things to compare and it's like oh great let me go do that and then
- 8:47Dave Hamilton: it'll recreate rewrite your document using all of that research so you're not
- 8:53Dave Hamilton: stuck with just the one thing it's still all transformative.
- 8:56Dave Hamilton: Um so i i just highly recommend using claude's research mode uh and i just wanted
- 9:01Dave Hamilton: to share that it's it's awesome i've been using it this week and it's it's changing
- 9:05Dave Hamilton: the way we run our businesses.
- 9:08Shannon Jean: Uh yeah that's really good yeah i love it i think that um
- 9:13Shannon Jean: I love that adaptability that it has, and I think it's better at understanding
- 9:20Shannon Jean: the context, I think, than other AI models.
- 9:23Dave Hamilton: Yeah. I have a question for you. Again, better than other AI apps,
- 9:27Dave Hamilton: you can use these models. You can use Opus elsewhere.
- 9:31Dave Hamilton: The app matters just as much as the models, in my opinion. Interesting.
- 9:37Shannon Jean: So on the other, like Opus, which is the latest and greatest, 4.6.
- 9:43Dave Hamilton: As of the moment we're recording, who knows when the next one's going on.
- 9:46Shannon Jean: And then Sonnet was older. Do they continue to work on those older models?
- 9:50Shannon Jean: Or are they just, okay, this one takes less...
- 9:54Shannon Jean: It's less impact, so you're not going to use up all your tokens as fast.
- 9:59Shannon Jean: That's the one thing I noticed with Claude is I hit the ceiling a lot more than
- 10:03Shannon Jean: like GPT. They kind of hide it, right?
- 10:06Dave Hamilton: Yes.
- 10:07Shannon Jean: They don't talk about that. But Claude, it's like, hey, your tokens are used
- 10:11Shannon Jean: up and they'll refresh at 2 p.m.
- 10:12Dave Hamilton: Yeah, you got your five-hour windows or whatever. Yeah.
- 10:15Dave Hamilton: Well, the nice part, though, about Claude is that you could buy tokens a la
- 10:21Dave Hamilton: carte to use in that, the remainder of that window. before your window resets.
- 10:26Dave Hamilton: Whereas with GPT, you cannot, with OpenAI, with ChatGPT, you cannot do that.
- 10:31Dave Hamilton: Yeah, right. And I love that about Claude. But I also recommend that everybody,
- 10:35Dave Hamilton: if you're just doing this, you get the $100 max plan, and you,
- 10:39Dave Hamilton: you know, it's going to be, yeah.
- 10:41Shannon Jean: And so, back to my question, do they still work on those older models that they
- 10:47Shannon Jean: sometimes, like, it'll say, hey, if you use Sonnet, you use less of your whatever resources.
- 10:51Dave Hamilton: Yeah, Sonnet is a smaller model than Opus, but when they came out with Opus
- 10:54Dave Hamilton: 4.6 right around that time, they came out with Sonnet 4.6 as well.
- 10:59Dave Hamilton: So yes, they are working on those older models. Got it.
- 11:03Dave Hamilton: But to a degree, right? Yeah. So, yep. That's great.
- 11:07Shannon Jean: No, I agree. It's a good tip using that Claude interface directly.
- 11:11Dave Hamilton: Yeah. They've figured out that that's just as important as the models that back it. Yeah.
- 11:19Dave Hamilton: We have, uh, we have more stuff to talk about, uh, including talking to you
- 11:25Dave Hamilton: and sharing with you about our sponsors.
- 11:27Dave Hamilton: Look, every contract, every client list, every late night pitch deck that we
- 11:32Dave Hamilton: pour ourselves into, that's the charmed life on the line.
- 11:36Dave Hamilton: Every time one of those phishing emails sneaks through. And here's the thing.
- 11:41Dave Hamilton: Hackers aren't going after fortune 500 companies first.
- 11:45Dave Hamilton: They're coming for us, the small teams, the lean operations with no dedicated security staff.
- 11:51Dave Hamilton: And that's exactly why our sponsor Bitdefender, a global leader in cybersecurity,
- 11:58Dave Hamilton: built their ultimate small business security specifically for businesses with
- 12:03Dave Hamilton: 25 or fewer employees like so many of us.
- 12:07Dave Hamilton: I checked it out and their centralized dashboard alone is worth looking at.
- 12:12Dave Hamilton: AI-powered scam detection, dark web monitoring for your business identity.
- 12:17Dave Hamilton: Password management, unlimited VPN, all managed from one place without needing a PhD in firewalls.
- 12:24Dave Hamilton: I would mass print bumper stickers about this product if social norms allowed it.
- 12:28Dave Hamilton: Keep your small business safe with Bitdefender Ultimate Small Business Security.
- 12:34Dave Hamilton: Save 30% when you visit our URL, bitdefender.com slash brain.
- 12:41Dave Hamilton: That's bitdefender.com slash brain for 30% off. Go check it out.
- 12:46Dave Hamilton: I think you're going to love it.
- 12:48Dave Hamilton: Our thanks to Bitdefender for sponsoring this episode. And we talk about it
- 12:52Dave Hamilton: all the time, right? Running a business is the charmed life, right?
- 12:55Dave Hamilton: Until it's 2 a.m. and you're untangling payroll from like three different platforms.
- 13:01Dave Hamilton: Our sponsor, Intuit QuickBooks Payroll, fixed that for us here at Backbeat Media.
- 13:06Dave Hamilton: It's the number one payroll software for small businesses for a reason.
- 13:11Dave Hamilton: And it's an all-in-one command center that integrates payroll,
- 13:15Dave Hamilton: team management, and accounting into one platform.
- 13:17Dave Hamilton: And this summer, QuickBooks Payroll is going even further, rolling out tools
- 13:22Dave Hamilton: to help you hire, onboard, manage, and retain your team all connected right
- 13:28Dave Hamilton: to your books. It's looking so cool.
- 13:30Dave Hamilton: I can't wait to check it out. Make the switch like we did. Learn more at quickbooks.com slash workforce.
- 13:38Dave Hamilton: That's a new URL, quickbooks.com slash workforce.
- 13:42Dave Hamilton: Go check it out. I think you're going to love it. I certainly do.
- 13:45Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to QuickBooks Payroll for sponsoring this episode.
- 13:51Dave Hamilton: What do you got, Shannon?
- 13:54Shannon Jean: So I type a lot. I create a lot of content. Yes.
- 13:58Dave Hamilton: Right?
- 13:58Shannon Jean: And my fingers, you know, sometimes like, man, I got to do all this whole thing.
- 14:01Shannon Jean: So I've been, I always look for dictation apps, different things.
- 14:05Shannon Jean: And one of them that I've used a little bit on my phone, but I never really
- 14:11Shannon Jean: used it on my Mac. and that is Whisperflow.
- 14:15Shannon Jean: And I don't even know if it qualifies as an AI app. It's a dictation app, but I know it's using AI.
- 14:22Dave Hamilton: Oh yeah, for sure. And just so everybody knows, it's WISPRflow.ai.
- 14:29Dave Hamilton: We'll put a link in the show notes like we always do. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:32Shannon Jean: And the way it works is a couple of different ways, but you can designate a
- 14:38Shannon Jean: key on your keyboard that you hold down.
- 14:40Dave Hamilton: Okay.
- 14:41Shannon Jean: When you hold it down, you hear a little blip in your speaker,
- 14:45Shannon Jean: and as long as you talk, it
- 14:48Shannon Jean: Yeah, definitely AI, because this is what it does. Not only does it take your
- 14:54Shannon Jean: voice and dictation and make perfect, I mean, perfect text out of it.
- 14:59Shannon Jean: There are no mistakes. It corrects mistakes you make while you're talking.
- 15:05Dave Hamilton: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:06Shannon Jean: And if you say something like, oh, no, don't say it that way.
- 15:10Shannon Jean: Or, oh, no, no, let's not do that. Let's do that.
- 15:14Shannon Jean: It it just fixes it and it creates i mean you can talk for a long time and the
- 15:19Shannon Jean: other option is to you do a keyboard combination and you don't have to hold
- 15:23Shannon Jean: it down you go bump up and it'll just record until you're done and you hit those
- 15:26Shannon Jean: combination again you know like command space bar or something like
- 15:29Dave Hamilton: That and then it effectively just pastes it into wherever you're.
- 15:32Shannon Jean: Talking and that's the beauty of it any app any website sure word google doc
- 15:40Shannon Jean: x facebook wherever you're at, it'll build customer service stuff.
- 15:45Shannon Jean: It'll build it. And it, it takes, uh, you know, the, it, it kind of levels up
- 15:51Shannon Jean: the conversational tone because it's not straight dictation.
- 15:55Shannon Jean: It's, it's quote, it's making it like you would type, you know,
- 16:00Shannon Jean: with the proper grammar.
- 16:01Shannon Jean: And when you say things like wanna, gonna, it says want to going to,
- 16:06Shannon Jean: and so it's, um, it's way ahead of you. and then it keeps it all.
- 16:12Shannon Jean: So it's got a log that you can go back and say, what did I, what did I record
- 16:18Shannon Jean: this in case, you know, you didn't do something with it or maybe you put it
- 16:21Shannon Jean: the wrong thing or you wanted to see what it did. It's pretty impressive, man.
- 16:26Shannon Jean: And I'm, you know, right now I'm still only on the, the, they give you a two week trial.
- 16:32Shannon Jean: I'm still in the middle of that two week trial on my Mac. And, um,
- 16:36Shannon Jean: It is, if you upgrade, they have a free one.
- 16:41Shannon Jean: You're limited on the number of 2,000 words per week on desktop, 1,000 on iOS.
- 16:46Shannon Jean: But if you pro, which is $12 a month, if you pay annually, you get unlimited
- 16:51Shannon Jean: words, prioritize all this kind of stuff. I mean, it's pretty cool.
- 16:55Shannon Jean: And you can get it for your team as well. So you could put everybody on it. Sure.
- 16:59Shannon Jean: And I just, I feel like, you know, when you stumble on something and you're
- 17:03Shannon Jean: just like, oh, wow. Like I kind of feel almost like the first time I stumbled
- 17:07Shannon Jean: on, I didn't stumble on it. First time I started using chat GPT.
- 17:10Shannon Jean: And I thought, wow, this is going to be so time-saving for me.
- 17:14Shannon Jean: Well, this is like, you know, I'm never typing an email again because I can
- 17:19Shannon Jean: just hold this down and go, Hey Dave, paragraph, and it's just perfect.
- 17:27Shannon Jean: And I, and just, it's gone. I get sand. I don't have to type anything. Yeah.
- 17:32Dave Hamilton: See, that's key.
- 17:34Shannon Jean: It's so good, dude.
- 17:34Dave Hamilton: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:36Shannon Jean: It's so good. Yeah, so Whisperflow. What's the UR? W-I-S-P-R?
- 17:42Dave Hamilton: Yeah, exactly. No, Whisperflow.ai. But it's in the show notes. We'll link to it.
- 17:47Shannon Jean: It's in the show notes.
- 17:48Dave Hamilton: Yeah. That, they should, I know they're like,
- 17:58Dave Hamilton: watch words on their website or don't type, just speak. They should take your
- 18:02Dave Hamilton: words, never type an email again.
- 18:05Dave Hamilton: Like that's what's going to sell this product right here.
- 18:08Shannon Jean: Absolutely. And it's just, and I have yet to, to have it, you know,
- 18:15Shannon Jean: uh, make a mistake, you know, and it, and I can start typing cause I'm using co-typist as well.
- 18:21Shannon Jean: The co-typist dot AI, which I really like it's, it's, it's predictive typing
- 18:25Shannon Jean: and it works great, But I'll start and I'm like, oh, wait, why am I typing?
- 18:29Shannon Jean: And I just hit the control key and then I can send it.
- 18:34Shannon Jean: It's just amazing. And a great use of it because I create these rather long
- 18:40Shannon Jean: prompts for perplexity or for Claude or Chachyptee.
- 18:46Shannon Jean: Well, now I just record them.
- 18:49Shannon Jean: And so I dump like a whole page prompt in there without having to futz with
- 18:55Shannon Jean: it. and it corrects it and makes it sound right.
- 18:58Shannon Jean: And it's such a time saver, man.
- 19:01Dave Hamilton: I love that.
- 19:02Shannon Jean: Huh. Yeah. It's a big deal.
- 19:04Dave Hamilton: That's a big deal.
- 19:06Shannon Jean: Yeah. All right.
- 19:06Dave Hamilton: So whisper flow. I do want to share one thing because whisper flow obviously
- 19:12Dave Hamilton: has whisper in the name and they point out in their feature list that it even
- 19:18Dave Hamilton: works if you are whispering, which I'm sure it does.
- 19:21Dave Hamilton: I have no, no issues with any of that. It makes perfect sense.
- 19:25Dave Hamilton: I want to point out, though, whispering is the worst thing you can do for your throat.
- 19:32Dave Hamilton: Talking, yelling are all better than whispering.
- 19:36Dave Hamilton: Yeah, because think about it. You are using nothing but your throat.
- 19:40Dave Hamilton: And you're shredding it when you whisper. Oh, yeah.
- 19:44Shannon Jean: Nothing from your gut.
- 19:46Dave Hamilton: I learned this from being around trained theater singers, you know,
- 19:50Dave Hamilton: who know better, but it's funny.
- 19:53Dave Hamilton: I'll, you know, I'll go to like a, a rock band gig or something at all.
- 19:56Dave Hamilton: You know, if I, if it's friends playing, I'll talk to them backstage or whatever
- 19:59Dave Hamilton: before the gig. And they'll be like, oh yeah, I'm on vocal rest.
- 20:02Dave Hamilton: And it's like, well, then you should stop whispering dude. Cause you're going
- 20:05Dave Hamilton: to wreck your throat before you go out and sing.
- 20:07Shannon Jean: That's amazing. Yeah.
- 20:09Dave Hamilton: So just, just bear that in mind. Just my little quick tip of the day,
- 20:12Dave Hamilton: but good deal. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yep.
- 20:14Shannon Jean: That's great.
- 20:15Dave Hamilton: Fun stuff. That's great. I got to check that out. That's, that's good.
- 20:19Shannon Jean: And if you're listening and you know, any AI apps or rappers or anything that
- 20:24Shannon Jean: we should be talking about, feedback at businessbrain.show. We want to hear from you.
- 20:29Dave Hamilton: Absolutely. Like he said, feedback at businessbrain.show, because we're all
- 20:35Dave Hamilton: about making sure we lead that charm life together.
- 20:41Dave Hamilton: Thanks for hanging out with us. Another week gone by. Enjoy your weekend. We'll see you next week.
- 20:48Shannon Jean: See ya.
- 20:49Dave Hamilton: Later.
