- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter twenty two, Saying and doing. A certain man had
- 0:04Speaker 1: two sons. And he came to the first and said, son,
- 0:07Speaker 1: go work to day in my vineyard. He answered and said,
- 0:10Speaker 1: I will not. But afterward he repented and went. And
- 0:14Speaker 1: he came to the second and said likewise, And he
- 0:16Speaker 1: answered and said, I go, sir, and went. Not whither
- 0:20Speaker 1: of them twain did the will of his father? They
- 0:23Speaker 1: say unto him the first in the Sermon on the Monk,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Christ said, not every one that saith unto me, Lord Lord,
- 0:30Speaker 1: shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he that
- 0:33Speaker 1: doeth the will of my Father, which is in heaven.
- 0:36Speaker 1: The test of sincerity is not in words, but in deeds.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Christ does not say to any man, what say ye
- 0:42Speaker 1: more than others? But what do ye more than others?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Full of meaning are his words? If ye know these things?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Happy are ye if ye do them? Words are of
- 0:52Speaker 1: no value unless they are accompanied with appropriate deeds. This
- 0:55Speaker 1: is the lesson taught in the Parable of the Two Sons.
- 0:58Speaker 1: This parable was at Christ's last visit to Jerusalem before
- 1:03Speaker 1: his death. He had driven out the buyers and sellers
- 1:06Speaker 1: from the temple. His voice had spoken to their hearts
- 1:09Speaker 1: with the power of God. Amazed and terrified, they had
- 1:12Speaker 1: obeyed his command without excuse or resistance. When their terror
- 1:16Speaker 1: was abated, the priests and elders returning to the temple
- 1:19Speaker 1: had found Christ healing the sick and the dying. They
- 1:22Speaker 1: had heard the voice of rejoicing and the song of praise.
- 1:25Speaker 1: In the temple itself. The children who had been restored
- 1:28Speaker 1: to health were waving palm branches and singing Hosannas to
- 1:31Speaker 1: the Son of David. Baby voices were listping their praises
- 1:35Speaker 1: of the mighty healer. Yet with the priests and elders,
- 1:38Speaker 1: all this did not suffice to overcome their prejudice and jealousy.
- 1:42Speaker 1: The next day, as Christ was teaching in the temple,
- 1:45Speaker 1: the chief priests and elders of the people came to
- 1:47Speaker 1: him and said, by what authority doest thou these things?
- 1:51Speaker 1: And who gave thee this authority? The priests and elders
- 1:54Speaker 1: had had unmistakable evidence of Christ's power in his cleansing
- 1:58Speaker 1: of the temple. They had seen Heaven's authority flashing from
- 2:01Speaker 1: its face. They could not resist the power by which
- 2:04Speaker 1: He spoke again in his wonderful deeds of healing. He
- 2:07Speaker 1: had answered the question. He had given evidence of his
- 2:10Speaker 1: authority which could not be controverted, But it was not
- 2:13Speaker 1: evidence that was wanted. The priests and elders were anxious
- 2:16Speaker 1: for Jesus to proclaim himself the Messiah, that they might
- 2:19Speaker 1: misapply his words and stir up the people against him.
- 2:23Speaker 1: They wished to destroy his influence and to put him
- 2:25Speaker 1: to death. Jesus knew that if they could not recognize
- 2:29Speaker 1: God in him, or see in his works the evidence
- 2:31Speaker 1: of his divine character, they would not believe his own
- 2:34Speaker 1: testimony that he was the Christ. In his answer, he
- 2:38Speaker 1: evades the issue they hoped to bring about, and turns
- 2:41Speaker 1: the condemnation upon themselves. I also will ask you one
- 2:45Speaker 1: thing he said, which, if ye tell me, I in
- 2:49Speaker 1: likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things?
- 2:52Speaker 1: The baptism of John. Whence was it from heaven or
- 2:56Speaker 1: of men? The priests and rulers were perplexed. They reasoned
- 3:00Speaker 1: with themselves, saying, if we shall say from heaven he
- 3:04Speaker 1: will say unto us, why did ye not then believe him?
- 3:07Speaker 1: But if we shall say of men, we fear the people?
- 3:10Speaker 1: For all hold John is a prophet. And they answered
- 3:13Speaker 1: Jesus and said, we cannot tell. And he said, unto them,
- 3:17Speaker 1: neither tell I you by what authority I do these things?
- 3:21Speaker 1: We cannot tell. This answer was a falsehood, but the
- 3:25Speaker 1: priests saw the position they were in and falsified in
- 3:28Speaker 1: order to screen themselves. John the Baptist had come there
- 3:31Speaker 1: and witness of the one whose authority they were now questioning.
- 3:35Speaker 1: He had pointed him out, saying, behold the lamb of God,
- 3:38Speaker 1: which taketh away the sin of the world. He had
- 3:41Speaker 1: baptized him, and after the baptism, as Christ was praying,
- 3:45Speaker 1: the heavens were opened, and the spirit of God like
- 3:47Speaker 1: a dove, rested upon him, while a voice from heaven
- 3:51Speaker 1: was heard, saying, this is my beloved son, in whom
- 3:54Speaker 1: I am well pleased. Remembering how John had repeated the
- 3:57Speaker 1: prophecies concerning the Messiah, remembering the scene of the baptism
- 4:02Speaker 1: of Jesus, the priests and rulers dared not say that
- 4:05Speaker 1: John's baptism was from heaven. If they acknowledged John to
- 4:08Speaker 1: be a prophet, as they believed him to be, how
- 4:11Speaker 1: could they deny his testimony that Jesus of Nazareth was
- 4:14Speaker 1: the son of God. And they could not say that
- 4:16Speaker 1: John's baptism was of men because of the people who
- 4:19Speaker 1: believed John to be a prophet. So they said, we
- 4:22Speaker 1: cannot tell. Then Christ gave the parable of the Father
- 4:26Speaker 1: and the two sons. When the Father went to the
- 4:28Speaker 1: first son, saying, go work to day in my vineyard,
- 4:31Speaker 1: the son promptly answered, I will not. He refused to
- 4:35Speaker 1: obey and gave himself up to wicked ways and associations.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But afterward he repented and obeyed the call. The Father
- 4:42Speaker 1: went to the second son with the same command, go
- 4:45Speaker 1: work to day in my vineyard. This son may reply,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I go, sir, but he went not. In this parable,
- 4:51Speaker 1: the Father represents God, the vineyard, the church. Why the
- 4:54Speaker 1: two sons are represented two classes of people. The son
- 4:58Speaker 1: who refused to obey the command, saying I will not,
- 5:02Speaker 1: represented those who were living in open transgression, who made
- 5:06Speaker 1: no profession of piety, who openly refused to come under
- 5:09Speaker 1: the yoke of restraint and obedience which the law of
- 5:12Speaker 1: God imposes. But many of these afterward repented and obeyed
- 5:16Speaker 1: the call of God when the gospel came to them
- 5:18Speaker 1: in the message of John. The Baptist repent ye for
- 5:21Speaker 1: the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. They repented and
- 5:24Speaker 1: confessed their sins in the son who said, I go, sir,
- 5:27Speaker 1: and went not. The character of the Pharisees was revealed
- 5:31Speaker 1: like this son. The Jewish leaders were impenitive and self sufficient.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The religious life of the Jewish nation had become a pretense.
- 5:39Speaker 1: When the law was proclaimed on Mount Sinai by the
- 5:42Speaker 1: voice of God, all the people pledged themselves to obey.
- 5:45Speaker 1: They said, I go, sir, but they went not. When
- 5:48Speaker 1: Christ came in person to set before them the principles
- 5:51Speaker 1: of the law, they rejected him. Christ had given the
- 5:54Speaker 1: Jewish leaders of his day abundant evidence of his authority
- 5:57Speaker 1: and divine power. For although they were convinced, they would
- 6:01Speaker 1: not accept the evidence, Christ had shown them that they
- 6:04Speaker 1: continued to disbelieve because they had not the spirit which
- 6:07Speaker 1: leads to obedience. He had declared to them, ye made
- 6:11Speaker 1: the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition
- 6:14Speaker 1: in vain, they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the
- 6:17Speaker 1: commandments of men. In the company before Christ there was
- 6:21Speaker 1: scribes and pharisees, priests and rulers. And after giving the
- 6:25Speaker 1: parable of the two Sons, Christ addressed to his hearers
- 6:28Speaker 1: the question, whither of them twain did the will of
- 6:31Speaker 1: his Father forgetting themselves. The Pharisees answered the first. This
- 6:36Speaker 1: they said, without realizing that they were pronouncing sentence against themselves.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Then there fell from Christ's lips the denunciation. Verily, I
- 6:45Speaker 1: say unto you that the publicans and the harlots go
- 6:48Speaker 1: into the Kingdom of God before you. For John came
- 6:51Speaker 1: unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed
- 6:53Speaker 1: them not. But the publicans and the harlots believed them,
- 6:56Speaker 1: And ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward
- 6:59Speaker 1: that ye knight believe him. John the Baptist came preaching truth,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and by his preaching sinners were convicted and converted. These
- 7:07Speaker 1: would go into the Kingdom of Heaven before the ones who,
- 7:09Speaker 1: in self righteousness resisted the solemn warning. The publicans and
- 7:14Speaker 1: harlots were ignorant. But these learned men knew the way
- 7:18Speaker 1: of truth. Yet they refused to walk in the path
- 7:20Speaker 1: which leads to the paradise of God. The truth that
- 7:23Speaker 1: should have been to them a savor of life unto life,
- 7:26Speaker 1: became a savor of death, unto death. Open sinners who
- 7:30Speaker 1: love themselves had received baptism at the hands of John.
- 7:33Speaker 1: That these teachers were hypocrites. Their own stubborn hearts were
- 7:37Speaker 1: the obstacle to their receiving the truth. They resisted the
- 7:40Speaker 1: conviction of the spirit of God. They refused obedience to
- 7:43Speaker 1: God's commandments. Christ did not say to them, ye cannot
- 7:48Speaker 1: enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he showed that the
- 7:50Speaker 1: obstacle which prevented them from entering was their own creating.
- 7:54Speaker 1: The door was still open to these Jewish leaders. The
- 7:57Speaker 1: invitation was still held out longed to see them convicted
- 8:01Speaker 1: and converted. The priests and elders of Israel spent their
- 8:05Speaker 1: lives in religious ceremonies, which they regarded as too sacred
- 8:09Speaker 1: to be connected with secular business. Therefore, their lives were
- 8:13Speaker 1: supposed to be wholly religious, but they performed their ceremonies
- 8:16Speaker 1: to be seen by men, that they might be thought
- 8:19Speaker 1: by the world to be pious and devoted. While professing
- 8:22Speaker 1: to obey, they refused to render obedience to God. They
- 8:26Speaker 1: were not doers of the truth which they professed to teach.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Christ declared John the Baptist to be one of the
- 8:32Speaker 1: greatest of the prophets, and he showed his hearers that
- 8:35Speaker 1: they had had sufficient evidence that John was a messenger
- 8:38Speaker 1: from God. The words of the preacher in the wilderness
- 8:41Speaker 1: were with power. He bore his message unflinchingly, rebuking the
- 8:45Speaker 1: sins of priests and rulers, and in joining upon them
- 8:48Speaker 1: the works of the Kingdom of Heaven. He pointed out
- 8:51Speaker 1: to them their sinful disregard of their father's authority in
- 8:55Speaker 1: refusing to do the work appointed them. He made no
- 8:58Speaker 1: compromise with sin, and many returned from their unrighteousness. Had
- 9:02Speaker 1: the profession of the Jewish leaders been genuine, they would
- 9:05Speaker 1: have received John's testimony and accepted Jesus as the Messiah.
- 9:10Speaker 1: But they did not show the fruits of repentance and righteousness.
- 9:13Speaker 1: The very ones whom they despised were pressing into the
- 9:16Speaker 1: Kingdom of God before them. In the parable, the son
- 9:20Speaker 1: who said, I go Sir, represented himself as faithful and obedient,
- 9:24Speaker 1: but time proved that his profession was not real. He
- 9:27Speaker 1: had no true love for his father. So the Pharisees
- 9:31Speaker 1: prided themselves on their holiness, but when tested, it was
- 9:34Speaker 1: found wanting. When it was for their interest to do so,
- 9:37Speaker 1: they made the requirements of the law very exacting. But
- 9:40Speaker 1: when obedience was required from themselves by cunning sapristries, they
- 9:45Speaker 1: reasoned away the force of God's precepts of them. Christ declared,
- 9:49Speaker 1: do not ye after their works, for they say and
- 9:52Speaker 1: do not. They had no true love for God or man.
- 9:56Speaker 1: God called them to be called workers with him in
- 9:58Speaker 1: blessing the world. But while in profession they accepted the call,
- 10:02Speaker 1: in action, they refused obedience. They trusted to self and
- 10:06Speaker 1: prided themselves on their goodness, but they set the commands
- 10:09Speaker 1: of God at defiance. They refused to do the work
- 10:12Speaker 1: which God had appointed them, And because of their transgression,
- 10:16Speaker 1: the Lord was about to divorce himself from the disobedient nation.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Self righteousness is not true righteousness, and those who cling
- 10:24Speaker 1: to it will be left to take the consequences of
- 10:26Speaker 1: holding a fatal deception. Many today claimed to obey the
- 10:30Speaker 1: commandments of God, but they have not the love of
- 10:32Speaker 1: God in their hearts to flow forth to others. Christ
- 10:36Speaker 1: calls them to unite with him and his work for
- 10:38Speaker 1: the saving of the world, but they content themselves with
- 10:41Speaker 1: saying I go, sir. They do not go. They do
- 10:45Speaker 1: not cooperate with those who are doing God's service. They
- 10:48Speaker 1: are idlers, like the unfaithful son. They make false promises
- 10:52Speaker 1: to God. In taking upon themselves the solemn covenant of
- 10:56Speaker 1: the Church, they have pledged themselves to receive and obey
- 10:59Speaker 1: the word of God, to give themselves to God's service.
- 11:02Speaker 1: But they do not do this. In profession. They claim
- 11:05Speaker 1: to be sons of God, but in life and character
- 11:08Speaker 1: they deny the relationship. They do not surrender the will
- 11:11Speaker 1: to God. They are living a lie. The promise of
- 11:14Speaker 1: obedience they appear to fulfill when this involves no sacrifice,
- 11:18Speaker 1: but when self denial and self sacrifice are required, when
- 11:21Speaker 1: they see the cross to be lifted, they draw back.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Thus the conviction of duty wears away, and known transgression
- 11:28Speaker 1: of God's commandments becomes habit. The ear may hear God's words,
- 11:32Speaker 1: but the spiritual perceptive powers have departed, the heart is hardened,
- 11:36Speaker 1: the conscience seared. Do not think that, because you do
- 11:39Speaker 1: not manifest decided hostility to Christ, that you are doing
- 11:42Speaker 1: him service. We thus deceive our own souls by withholding
- 11:47Speaker 1: that which God has given us to use in his service,
- 11:50Speaker 1: be it time or means, or any other of his
- 11:52Speaker 1: intrusted gifts. We work against him. Satan uses the listless,
- 11:57Speaker 1: sleepy indolence of professed Christians to strengthen Hishim forces and
- 12:00Speaker 1: win souls to his side. Many who think that though
- 12:04Speaker 1: they are doing no actual work for Christ, they are
- 12:06Speaker 1: yet on his side, are enabling the enemy to preoccupy
- 12:09Speaker 1: ground and gain advantages by their failure to be diligent
- 12:13Speaker 1: workers for the Master. By leaving duties undone and words unspoken,
- 12:17Speaker 1: they have allowed Satan to gain control of souls who
- 12:20Speaker 1: might have been one for Christ. We can never be
- 12:23Speaker 1: saved in indolence and inactivity. There is no such thing
- 12:26Speaker 1: as a truly converted person living a helpless, useless life.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It is not possible for us to drift into heaven.
- 12:33Speaker 1: No sluggard can enter there. If we do not strive
- 12:36Speaker 1: to gain an entrance into the Kingdom, if we do
- 12:39Speaker 1: not seek earnestly to learn what constitutes its laws, we
- 12:42Speaker 1: are not fitted for a part in it. Those who
- 12:45Speaker 1: refuse to cooperate with God on earth would not cooperate
- 12:48Speaker 1: with Him in heaven. It would not be safe to
- 12:50Speaker 1: take them to heaven. There is more hope for publicans
- 12:54Speaker 1: and sinners than for those who know the word of God.
- 12:56Speaker 1: But refuse to obey it. He who sees himself a
- 12:59Speaker 1: sinner no cloak for his sin, who knows that he
- 13:02Speaker 1: is corrupting soul, body, and spirit. Before God becomes alarmed
- 13:06Speaker 1: lest he be eternally separated from the kingdom of heaven.
- 13:09Speaker 1: He realizes his diseased condition and seeks healing from the
- 13:13Speaker 1: great physician, who has said him that cometh to me.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I go in no wise cast out these souls the
- 13:19Speaker 1: Lord can use as workers in his vineyard. The son
- 13:22Speaker 1: who for a time refused obedience to his father's command
- 13:26Speaker 1: was not condemned by Christ, and neither was he commended.
- 13:29Speaker 1: The class who act the part of the first son
- 13:31Speaker 1: in refusing obedience deserve no credit for holding this position.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Their frankness is not to be regarded as a virtue
- 13:38Speaker 1: sanctified by truth and holiness. It would make men bold
- 13:42Speaker 1: witnesses for Christ, but used as it is by the sinner,
- 13:45Speaker 1: it is insulting and defiant, and approaches to blasphemy. The
- 13:49Speaker 1: fact that a man is not a hypocrite does not
- 13:51Speaker 1: make him any the less really a sinner. When the
- 13:54Speaker 1: appeals of the Holy Spirit come to the heart, our
- 13:56Speaker 1: only safety lies in responding to them. Without delay. When
- 14:00Speaker 1: the call comes, go work to day in my vineyard.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Do not refuse the invitation to day. If ye will
- 14:06Speaker 1: hear his voice, harden not your hearts. It is unsafe
- 14:10Speaker 1: to delay obedience. You may never hear the invitation again.
- 14:14Speaker 1: And let none flatter themselves that sins cherished for a
- 14:17Speaker 1: time can easily be given up by and by this
- 14:20Speaker 1: is not so. Every sin cherished weakens the character and
- 14:23Speaker 1: strengthens habit, and physical, mental, and moral depravity is the result.
- 14:28Speaker 1: You may reprent of the wrong you have done and
- 14:31Speaker 1: set your feet in right paths, but the mold of
- 14:33Speaker 1: your mind and your familiarity with evil will make it
- 14:36Speaker 1: difficult for you to distinguish between right and wrong. Through
- 14:40Speaker 1: the wrong habit's form, Satan will assail you again and again.
- 14:44Speaker 1: In the command go work to day in my vineyard.
- 14:47Speaker 1: The tests of sincerity is brought to every soul. Will
- 14:50Speaker 1: there be deeds as well as words. Will the one
- 14:53Speaker 1: called put to use all the knowledge he has, working faithfully,
- 14:56Speaker 1: disinterestedly for the owner of the vineyard. The apostle Peter
- 15:01Speaker 1: instructs us as to the plan on which we must work.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Grace and peace be multiplied. Unto you he says, through
- 15:08Speaker 1: the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, according
- 15:11Speaker 1: as his divine power, hath given unto us all things
- 15:14Speaker 1: that retain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of
- 15:18Speaker 1: Him that hath called us to glory and virtue, whereby
- 15:21Speaker 1: are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that
- 15:25Speaker 1: by these ye might be partakers of the Divine nature,
- 15:28Speaker 1: having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And besides this giving all diligence. Add to your faith,
- 15:35Speaker 1: virtue and to virtue, knowledge and to knowledge, Temperance and
- 15:40Speaker 1: to temperance, patience and to patience, Godliness and to godliness,
- 15:44Speaker 1: brotherly kindness and a brotherly kindness charity. If you cultivate
- 15:49Speaker 1: faithfully the vineyard of your soul, God is making you
- 15:52Speaker 1: a laborer together with himself, and you will have a
- 15:55Speaker 1: work to do not only for yourself, but for others.
- 15:58Speaker 1: In representing the Church as the vineyard. Christ does not
- 16:01Speaker 1: teach that we are to restrict our sympathies and labors
- 16:04Speaker 1: to our own numbers. The Lord's vineyard is to be
- 16:07Speaker 1: enlarged in all parts of the earth. He desires it
- 16:10Speaker 1: to be extended as we receive the instruction and grace
- 16:13Speaker 1: of God. We should impart to others a knowledge of
- 16:15Speaker 1: how to care for the precious plants. Thus we may
- 16:19Speaker 1: extend the vineyard of the Lord. God is watching for
- 16:22Speaker 1: evidence of our faith, love, and patience. He looks to
- 16:25Speaker 1: see if we are using every spiritual advantage to become
- 16:28Speaker 1: skillful workers in His vineyard on earth, that we may
- 16:31Speaker 1: enter the paradise of God, that eden home from which
- 16:34Speaker 1: Adam and Eve were excluded by transgression. God stands toward
- 16:38Speaker 1: his people in the relation of a father, and he
- 16:40Speaker 1: has a father's claim to our faithful service. Consider the
- 16:44Speaker 1: life of Christ, standing at the head of humanity serving
- 16:47Speaker 1: his father. He is an example of what every son
- 16:49Speaker 1: should and may be the obedience that Christ rendered God
- 16:54Speaker 1: requires from human beings today He served his father with love,
- 16:58Speaker 1: in willingness and freedom. I delight to do Thy will,
- 17:01Speaker 1: O my God, he declared, yea thy law is within
- 17:04Speaker 1: my heart. Christ counted no sacrifice too great, no toil
- 17:08Speaker 1: too hard, in order to accomplish the work which he
- 17:11Speaker 1: came to do. At the age of twelve, he said,
- 17:13Speaker 1: wist ye not that I must be about my father's business.
- 17:17Speaker 1: He had heard the call and had taken up the work.
- 17:20Speaker 1: My meat, he said, is to do the will of
- 17:21Speaker 1: Him that sent me, and to finish his work. Thus
- 17:24Speaker 1: we are to serve God. He only serves who acts
- 17:27Speaker 1: up to the highest standard of obedience. All who would
- 17:30Speaker 1: be sons and daughters of God must prove themselves co
- 17:33Speaker 1: workers with God in Christ and the heavenly angels. This
- 17:36Speaker 1: is the test for every soul of those who faithfully
- 17:39Speaker 1: serve him. The Lord says, they shall be mine in
- 17:42Speaker 1: that day when I make up my jewels, and I
- 17:44Speaker 1: will spare them as a man spareth his own son
- 17:46Speaker 1: that serveth him. God's great object in the working out
- 17:50Speaker 1: of his providences is to try men, to give them
- 17:52Speaker 1: opportunity to develop character. Thus he proves whether they are
- 17:56Speaker 1: obedient or disobedient to His commands. Good works not purchase
- 18:00Speaker 1: the love of God, but they reveal that we possess
- 18:03Speaker 1: that love. If we surrender the will to God, we
- 18:05Speaker 1: shall not work in order to earn God's love. His
- 18:08Speaker 1: love as a free gift will be received into the soul,
- 18:11Speaker 1: and from love to him shall delight to obey his commandments.
- 18:15Speaker 1: There are only two classes in the world to day,
- 18:18Speaker 1: and only two classes will be recognized in the judgment
- 18:21Speaker 1: those who violate God's law and those who obey it.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Christ gives the tests by which to prove our loyalty
- 18:27Speaker 1: or disloyalty. If ye love me, he says, keep thy commandments.
