Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So big Labor Party conference in christ it's at the weekend.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Rail Yes, you're getting your rail and able ferries across
- 0:05Speaker 1: the cook straight the need and you're getting your hospital
- 0:08Speaker 1: everything that was promised. The cuts, they will reverse them.
- 0:12Speaker 1: So how do you get back to surplus? How do
- 0:14Speaker 1: you balance the books?
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'm absolutely confident we'll be able to put out a
- 0:17Speaker 2: fiscal plan before the election, as we always do. That
- 0:20Speaker 2: shows that all of the commitments that we are making
- 0:22Speaker 2: will be able to pay for it.
- 0:23Speaker 1: On tax. Yes, they did discuss tax, but like fight club,
- 0:26Speaker 1: you don't talk about what you're talking. You don't talked
- 0:28Speaker 1: about the.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Remits process feeds into a policy process that will result
- 0:32Speaker 2: on us producing policy before the election.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So it did pass the tax remit. Joining us is
- 0:38Speaker 1: former Labor Minister Stuart Nasha.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Good morning, good morning, right, how are you? Yeah? Really good?
- 0:43Speaker 1: Thank you. Good to have you on the show. What
- 0:45Speaker 1: did you think yesterday the call around Orcus, which I
- 0:49Speaker 1: would have thought you would want to leave it up
- 0:50Speaker 1: your sleeve as a bargaining chip, wouldn't you Rather than
- 0:53Speaker 1: rule it out.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You'll leave it you willed out at the moment. You know,
- 0:56Speaker 3: Labour's always been very much about for an independent foreign policy.
- 1:02Speaker 3: You wouldn't tas after the US and UK at the moment,
- 1:04Speaker 3: would you really? I just think you'd know, you'd rule
- 1:07Speaker 3: it out and see what happens.
- 1:09Speaker 1: What about the tax, I mean, it's obviously the remit
- 1:11Speaker 1: has passed, but there's a lot of water to go
- 1:13Speaker 1: under the bridge. What's your peck of how they will
- 1:16Speaker 1: how they will offer this tax increase, be to capital
- 1:21Speaker 1: gains or whatever.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yeah, as far as I'm aware, there are probably two
- 1:25Speaker 3: people in the country who don't believe we need a
- 1:26Speaker 3: kepital gains tax. One of them is Nicola Willis and
- 1:28Speaker 3: the other one is Chris Luxon. I think everyone else,
- 1:31Speaker 3: every sensible economists, the business around table to talk about it. Now,
- 1:35Speaker 3: your major agencies are saying we need a capital gains tax.
- 1:37Speaker 3: You know, we tax labor. If they don't tax capital
- 1:40Speaker 3: just doesn't seem right. So you know, when the reporter
- 1:44Speaker 3: and the stand up asked, how are you going to
- 1:45Speaker 3: balance the budget or how are you going to meet
- 1:47Speaker 3: all your physical obligations? Well it will probably be through
- 1:51Speaker 3: some form of capital taxation, which is necessary and everyone
- 1:54Speaker 3: agrees it is.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah, But so that's interesting. So you don't think they
- 1:58Speaker 1: will offset it, because this was the thing that English
- 2:00Speaker 1: did so well, right with the GST. You off city
- 2:03Speaker 1: so well, we are going to increase taxes here or
- 2:05Speaker 1: introduces tax here, but we will cut taxes here, which
- 2:08Speaker 1: means it's physically neutral, which doesn't address the wider issue
- 2:12Speaker 1: that labor has, which is how do you afford all
- 2:14Speaker 1: the stuff you promise?
- 2:16Speaker 3: Look, I think there'll be a measure a bit of
- 2:18Speaker 3: both have any sort of capital gain tax, and I
- 2:21Speaker 3: don't think there'll be a wealth tax that's just nothing.
- 2:23Speaker 3: But any form of capital gain tax will will be
- 2:26Speaker 3: offset in either taxes and labor or tax for business,
- 2:30Speaker 3: for example, through accelerate depreciation, which is something we do
- 2:32Speaker 3: the hell of a lot to work on. Or what
- 2:34Speaker 3: you do do is you use a little bit of
- 2:36Speaker 3: it to pay off debt, because there's a lot of
- 2:38Speaker 3: debt around at the moment. I find Nikola that makes
- 2:41Speaker 3: me smile when she talks about labor spending. She has
- 2:44Speaker 3: spent more in last year's budget than labor spent in
- 2:47Speaker 3: any of its six budgets when we were in government,
- 2:49Speaker 3: So she's lost all her credibility, So it makes it
- 2:53Speaker 3: easier to introduce something like this, because, as mentioned, Nicholas
- 2:56Speaker 3: just lost her credibility when it comes to fistical and
- 2:58Speaker 3: economic methods.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Well, I mean, yeah, you could argue the book deteriorating
- 3:02Speaker 1: and that's out of her control et center blah blah blah.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But you guys did the same.
- 3:06Speaker 3: The fourteen billion dollar checks cast.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Anyway, Hey, just for you guys, you will be the
- 3:13Speaker 1: leader at the next election.
- 3:14Speaker 3: You reckon. I have absolutely no doubt if he wants
- 3:16Speaker 3: to be the leader, and I'm assuming he does because
- 3:18Speaker 3: he's sort of he's engaged his pastor Look, the main
- 3:21Speaker 3: goal of a conference one year out, one year after
- 3:24Speaker 3: an election, two year out from an election, is to
- 3:27Speaker 3: send the faith of the way believe in that the
- 3:29Speaker 3: party can win the next election. So it's got to
- 3:32Speaker 3: be upbeat. It's got to be it's got to be positive.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And I think this this was. You know, you've got
- 3:39Speaker 3: a prime minister who is the most unpopular prime minister
- 3:44Speaker 3: one year out from an election that you've ever had,
- 3:46Speaker 3: and I think labors are Lady's doing quite well. I
- 3:51Speaker 3: think the supporters will have walked away going, yeah, we
- 3:54Speaker 3: could do it. You can't mind labor your next ones.
- 3:57Speaker 3: It's not about pat coalition parties, but labors are as
- 4:00Speaker 3: will have walked away, Sick bakon Beat National. That's the
- 4:02Speaker 3: main goal, out of the allega, out of the Kempaign,
- 4:04Speaker 3: out of the Sorry conferences.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Great to have you on the show, stud Nash for
