- 0:14Speaker 4: Oh?
- 0:14Speaker 2: Man, my mom is great.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I love her so much.
- 0:17Speaker 2: My mom loves you. My mom and Jimmy go way
- 0:19Speaker 2: way back.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:21Speaker 3: She's the coolest, she's the cutest, and she's the most talented.
- 0:25Speaker 1: She plays the ukallact.
- 0:26Speaker 4: She well, not only does she play the ukulele, but
- 0:28Speaker 4: she she brings the ukulele everywhere she goes. She does,
- 0:32Speaker 4: and she would make you, guys get up and start.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Can you bring Mom next time you come on?
- 0:36Speaker 2: She would love that, right.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I loove Mom. I want to invite you come on
- 0:40Speaker 1: the show. She's the best she is. If not that,
- 0:44Speaker 1: then in a video, then I'll take it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'll settle for a video of I was going to say,
- 0:48Speaker 2: it's easy.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Yeah, And how's your daughters.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Daughters are great, Simone, who's twenty four. I had her
- 0:55Speaker 4: with me in Europe. Her and her partner Tatiana. Oh
- 0:57Speaker 4: was beautiful, so cool to spend time there. My seven
- 1:01Speaker 4: year old, I got all daughters. I'm a girl dad.
- 1:03Speaker 4: My seven year old the light of my life. My
- 1:05Speaker 4: nine year old Jazzy just had her first flag football game.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and she's super fast. She's an athlete and
- 1:16Speaker 4: she plays wide out, but she also blocks and she
- 1:18Speaker 4: you know, she does those crack back blocks. So she
- 1:22Speaker 4: wound up crack backing one of the players and kind
- 1:24Speaker 4: of pushing him down, and like, oh my god.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26Speaker 4: And then so she came to me. I was on
- 1:28Speaker 4: the sidelines because I'm that dad and the like right there,
- 1:30Speaker 4: and she comes over and she's like, you know, the
- 1:32Speaker 4: coach told me not to not to not to push
- 1:34Speaker 4: anybody down like that.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I said, who told you that, honey.
- 1:38Speaker 4: I said, the other coach are there on the other team.
- 1:40Speaker 4: I said, listen, you push them down and you keep
- 1:42Speaker 4: them down.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Let's talk about the
- 1:50Speaker 3: smashing machine.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 3: I'm going to read a couple of reviews here. You
- 1:54Speaker 3: can plug your ears if you want to. Variety says
- 1:57Speaker 3: Dwayne Johnson, is a revelation that's riety Mashable. Mashable says
- 2:04Speaker 3: Dwayne Johnson delivers a career changing performance. BBC says Dwayne
- 2:11Speaker 3: Johnson is oscar Worthy and his new ZILM Come On.
- 2:18Speaker 3: The Smashing Machine received a fifteen and a half minute
- 2:22Speaker 3: standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Man, oh man, what did that work?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Thank you?
- 2:29Speaker 1: I saw that online.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Oh my god. That was so.
- 2:34Speaker 4: That was emotional. I was really emotional for that. Yeah,
- 2:36Speaker 4: it really was, because you know, you make this film,
- 2:39Speaker 4: the Smashing Machine, and with not attached to an outcome
- 2:43Speaker 4: or a response. So I'm not It's all new stuff
- 2:46Speaker 4: to me and that's the truth. And so I went
- 2:48Speaker 4: over there to Venice Film Festival and we're in competition
- 2:52Speaker 4: and I'm floating as it is.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And then you know, I get.
- 2:56Speaker 4: There on Saturday and the premiere of Smash Machine on Monday,
- 3:00Speaker 4: and we're in Venice and I'm looking through my phone
- 3:03Speaker 4: at these other movies that are debuting and that are
- 3:06Speaker 4: getting these standing ovations like five minutes and six minutes
- 3:10Speaker 4: and yeah, ten minutes, and I'm thinking, God, how do
- 3:13Speaker 4: I don't are we going to get a minute or.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Do I have to clap for myself clapping?
- 3:22Speaker 4: And there's cards at the end of our movie before
- 3:26Speaker 4: the credits roll, and one of the cards says, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 4: it says before this, these fighters today they make millions
- 3:33Speaker 4: of dollars and everyone knows their name, but his name
- 3:38Speaker 4: was Mark Kerr. That place I have chills erupted for
- 3:43Speaker 4: fifteen and a half minutes, and before the credits even rolled,
- 3:46Speaker 4: and the lights come on, and I'm crying. I'm trying
- 3:48Speaker 4: to clear my tears away, and Emily's crying, and we're
- 3:51Speaker 4: just Benny Safty oar, director is crying. And by the way,
- 3:53Speaker 4: Mark Kerr, who I sat next to, watching and this
- 3:57Speaker 4: is his life and he's a big guy, and our
- 4:00Speaker 4: bodies are here and he was shaking the whole time.
- 4:03Speaker 4: It's a very intense emotional film, and it was I
- 4:06Speaker 4: was so happy for him, for Mark, because it was
- 4:11Speaker 4: his validation that despite your struggles, despite the fact you
- 4:16Speaker 4: overdose twice and you're still here. He's lucky to be alive,
- 4:20Speaker 4: things turned out okay, and you are an inspiration to everybody.
- 4:23Speaker 4: So that's what that, that's what that applause man, Yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 4: Mark Her, Mark hers unbelievable.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Congrats on this. Your performance is amazing.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Some people work their whole careers to get a performance
- 4:37Speaker 3: like this.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You did it, but you got their great reviews. You
- 4:40Speaker 1: were amazing. I didn't.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I know it's you, but I didn't recognize you had
- 4:44Speaker 3: a different accent.
- 4:45Speaker 1: You had a prosthetics, Hun did.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Yeah, so we had a physical transformation certainly an emotional
- 4:51Speaker 4: transformation and a vocal transformation too as well.
- 4:54Speaker 2: But I did.
- 4:55Speaker 4: There was about twenty two prosthetics from Kazuhiro, who is
- 4:58Speaker 4: our Oscar winning prosthetic makeup artists May twenty two prosthetics.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I had to put on thirty pounds of over just
- 5:05Speaker 4: over thirty pounds of muscle, which is which, by the way,
- 5:09Speaker 4: what you realize is I wish you know how you
- 5:12Speaker 4: have some actors and there are friends who say I
- 5:14Speaker 4: had to put on weight.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I went to McDonald's every day.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Mark Kerr had like just this quality of muscle, like
- 5:21Speaker 4: fast twitch quality muscle because he was a wrestler. Yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 4: and I had to still put on this weight, still
- 5:26Speaker 4: be able to move like an MMA fighter, and it
- 5:29Speaker 4: was about thirty pounds, and but.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You had to put on different like your shoulders.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Well, he Mark her his his silhouette was just and
- 5:38Speaker 4: being a wrestler, always going in for the double leg
- 5:40Speaker 4: takes down takedowns, and lifting guys up. He had these
- 5:43Speaker 4: massive shoulders, his neck was huge, his chest, his quads,
- 5:46Speaker 4: I mean he was.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It was a lot.
- 5:48Speaker 4: And by the way, our writer, director Benny Saftie, who
- 5:51Speaker 4: you know, Benny, who's the best. And he he said
- 5:55Speaker 4: to me, hey, DJ, don't I don't know how to
- 5:57Speaker 4: tell you this. And I don't know if you've ever
- 5:59Speaker 4: heard this. He was, You're gonna have to get bigger.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe it or not, dude, And I went, okay,
- 6:06Speaker 1: here you go. And Benny won for Best Director.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:10Speaker 4: So we have our debut in Venice Film Festival and
- 6:14Speaker 4: we get that incredible fifteen and a half minute ovation
- 6:17Speaker 4: and then we go home and Benny is one.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Of these guys he texts. He texts like he talks right.
- 6:24Speaker 4: You know, those kinds of people exactly, And so he
- 6:26Speaker 4: texts me, he goes, well, I'm going back to Venice
- 6:29Speaker 4: dot dot dot and I don't know why dot dot dot.
- 6:33Speaker 4: And then he winds up winning Best Director of all
- 6:37Speaker 4: the Venice Film Festival. Yeah, yeah, he won, he won it.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Nice. How did you end up working with Benny Safti?
- 6:47Speaker 1: I love his work?
- 6:48Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 6:48Speaker 4: So we I had just watched I love his work too.
- 6:51Speaker 4: I just watched on cut Gems in twenty nineteen and
- 6:53Speaker 4: I went to Benny and I said, hey, I got
- 6:56Speaker 4: this idea called The Smashing Machine, and it's based off
- 6:58Speaker 4: of documentary, based on your auteur style of being a director,
- 7:05Speaker 4: and how bold I think you are. I think you'd
- 7:07Speaker 4: be great at directing this and writing it. And then
- 7:11Speaker 4: we agreed to do it, and then COVID hit so
- 7:15Speaker 4: unbeknownst to me, Benny, when you guys see the movie,
- 7:18Speaker 4: there's a yellow Nautica sweater that's one of these iconic
- 7:23Speaker 4: sweaters from Nautica that Mark Kerr is wearing in the documentary.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Benny in twenty nineteen, once we agree to make the
- 7:30Speaker 4: Smashing Machine, he finds the sweater online Triple X sends
- 7:36Speaker 4: it to me with a written letter and said, I
- 7:38Speaker 4: am going to be so honored to work with you.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Where this and you will become Mark Kerr. Here's your
- 7:43Speaker 4: inspiration as an actor. Well, I never got the sweater
- 7:47Speaker 4: and I never got the letter, so he thought I
- 7:50Speaker 4: ghosted him, and he's like, god, J's such an ass.
- 7:54Speaker 4: And then I never heard from him again. I was like, wow,
- 7:56Speaker 4: what happened? I thought we were going to make this thing,
- 7:59Speaker 4: and then lo and behold he's working with Emily Blunt
- 8:02Speaker 4: on Oppenheimer and he goes, hey, you're good friends with
- 8:06Speaker 4: DJ and Emily said, yeah, he's one of my best friends.
- 8:09Speaker 4: And he said, did you ever get the sweater I
- 8:11Speaker 4: sent him? Could you ask him? So she asked me.
- 8:15Speaker 4: She goes, hey, are you guys working together? I said, well,
- 8:17Speaker 4: we have this project called Smashing Machine. I think it
- 8:19Speaker 4: could be really cool. She goes, I'm gonna connect you guys.
- 8:21Speaker 4: She connected us via text. I was like, brother, I
- 8:24Speaker 4: never got the sweater. He's like, I don't know what
- 8:26Speaker 4: happened to it, but let's do this together, Smashing Machine.
- 8:30Speaker 4: And we make this movie with Emily Blunt, and we're
- 8:32Speaker 4: here in Fallon talking to you and talking to you.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yeah, come on, but it is oh, yeah, this is you.
- 8:42Speaker 3: This is Dwayne as Mark Kerr right there. Yeah, I
- 8:47Speaker 3: mean just a beast.
- 8:49Speaker 2: He was a beast of a man. Yeah.
- 8:51Speaker 3: And these fighting scenes, by the way, I don't know.
- 8:53Speaker 3: I obviously you're gonna tell me the answer.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:56Speaker 1: To this point, they seem real.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Okay, So Benny had did he get punched?
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yes, dude. Yes.
- 9:04Speaker 4: So Benny has this motto before we started shooting, which
- 9:08Speaker 4: was as real as it gets. Let's make it as
- 9:10Speaker 4: real as it gets. And then he said to me,
- 9:12Speaker 4: he goes, I would love in these fighting scenes to
- 9:16Speaker 4: never cut away from you, and I would like to
- 9:18Speaker 4: not use your stunt double. Well, I know what that means.
- 9:21Speaker 4: That means I'm getting my ass kicked. Yeah, I'm getting rocked.
- 9:25Speaker 4: And I said, absolutely, let's do it. And I, aside
- 9:31Speaker 4: from putting on the thirty pounds of Mark Herr muscle,
- 9:34Speaker 4: I went through a three three month training camp MMA fighters,
- 9:38Speaker 4: MMA coaches as well, because I had really had to
- 9:40Speaker 4: look the part and there's a different style. There's a
- 9:43Speaker 4: scene at the end where and this happened in real life.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Markkurr is in Japan. He's fighting in front of thirty
- 9:49Speaker 4: thousand people and he's fighting against a fighter named Fvejeta.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Mark her is on all fours. Fijeta is just wailing
- 9:56Speaker 4: away on him. Mark Herr is not moving, but the
- 9:59Speaker 4: camera's right there in this documentary and he's with it.
- 10:02Speaker 4: He's not knocked out, he's not loopy. He's just like
- 10:05Speaker 4: this and he's taking every hit and I said to Benny,
- 10:11Speaker 4: are we gonna that's how we're gonna shoot this scene?
- 10:13Speaker 2: He goes yes. So I told our I told our fighter.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Who why did I bring that up?
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah? Thanks? My jaw is still not the same.
- 10:22Speaker 4: But I said to our fighter, I said, hey, brother,
- 10:24Speaker 4: I know it sounds crazy, but you got to hit me.
- 10:26Speaker 4: You have to hit me. And he is a Japanese fighter,
- 10:29Speaker 4: very respectful. He goes, no, no, no, I will not
- 10:32Speaker 4: hit you. He refused to hit me, and I finally said, please,
- 10:35Speaker 4: we have one shot at this. You must hit me,
- 10:38Speaker 4: and Benny came over and said you must hit him
- 10:40Speaker 4: and and then but then he said, I know you
- 10:43Speaker 4: respect uh DJ, but I know you respect the fight
- 10:47Speaker 4: that actually happened with Mark curR in Japan. Let's stay,
- 10:51Speaker 4: let's keep our integrity and wail away. So you'll see
- 10:55Speaker 4: in the movie he's rocking me over and over and
- 10:59Speaker 4: over again.
- 11:00Speaker 1: How was this? I go, I have to ask you
- 11:01Speaker 1: because it was.
- 11:02Speaker 2: It was wild.
- 11:03Speaker 4: So after that fight, you see me and I'm kind
- 11:05Speaker 4: of I look like I'm loopy. That's because I had
- 11:07Speaker 4: a concussion. And yeah, but it's it's the thing you
- 11:13Speaker 4: gotta do. You realize because if you're gonna make an
- 11:15Speaker 4: mm A movie, you gotta go all the way.
- 11:20Speaker 2: And that's what we did with this.
- 11:22Speaker 1: You have to man and then here can you explain
- 11:24Speaker 1: this photo? Here?
- 11:25Speaker 3: This is yeah, this is You're inducting Mark Kerr into
- 11:29Speaker 3: the UFC Hall of Fame.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that's great.
- 11:32Speaker 2: It was amazing. We were down and we were.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Down in Vegas and Mark got inducted into the Hall
- 11:40Speaker 4: of Fame. And you know, here's the thing he For
- 11:42Speaker 4: you guys who aren't familiar with Mark Kerr, there was
- 11:45Speaker 4: a documentary about his life in the mid two thousand,
- 11:48Speaker 4: early to mid two thousands. At the end of that documentary,
- 11:52Speaker 4: he loses and he loses everything and the documentary ends.
- 11:57Speaker 4: And so you think, for a guy like that, like wow,
- 11:59Speaker 4: for last twenty something years, that's my legacy. Like, that's
- 12:03Speaker 4: what my legacy is. So it was such a cool honor.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I called Dana White, who's been a longtime friend of mine,
- 12:09Speaker 4: and I said, what do you think, brother, do you
- 12:11Speaker 4: think is this possible? And he's like, yes, it is possible.
- 12:15Speaker 4: And for everything that Mark her has done for our
- 12:17Speaker 4: for our sport and being one of the godfathers to
- 12:19Speaker 4: be an honor for us to induct him in the
- 12:21Speaker 4: Hall of Fame.
- 12:22Speaker 2: So that was a really special moment.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Legacy. Now that's his legacy.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Now, yeah, hall of Fame, Hall of Fame.
- 12:31Speaker 3: All right, how do we set up where we are
- 12:35Speaker 3: in this scene here and.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Mark her life. Yeah, so right now with Mark
- 12:39Speaker 2: Curr's life.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Where Mark our movie takes place in about a three
- 12:44Speaker 4: year period, and it was at a time where Mark
- 12:46Speaker 4: at that time, like Mike Tyson, at his height, he
- 12:49Speaker 4: was undefeated and he was the greatest MMA fighter on
- 12:52Speaker 4: the planet. And he was and he never lost until
- 12:56Speaker 4: this moment what you'll see in the scene, and he was.
- 13:01Speaker 2: He was widely feared. He was completely dominant.
- 13:04Speaker 4: But he also the anchor of his life was the
- 13:07Speaker 4: love of his life is Don Staples with his girlfriend
- 13:09Speaker 4: played by the great Emily Blunt, and they had this
- 13:12Speaker 4: volcanic relationship.
- 13:14Speaker 2: And we've all been there. We all know.
- 13:16Speaker 4: You get behind closed doors with your loved ones, things
- 13:20Speaker 4: can change instantly and you have these very raw fights,
- 13:26Speaker 4: as Emily and I did, as Mark and Don did
- 13:28Speaker 4: in their life. And you guys will see in this
- 13:31Speaker 4: clip he's fighting his big fight in Japan and his
- 13:36Speaker 4: girlfriend down shows up and he invited her. But like
- 13:40Speaker 4: a lot of fighters, when they get in that zone,
- 13:43Speaker 4: it's hard for them to break out of it. And unfortunately,
- 13:45Speaker 4: sometimes when you get in that zone, you treat people
- 13:48Speaker 4: who love you the most, you treat them the worst.
- 13:52Speaker 2: And that's what happens.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Oh gosh, I want to show everyone a clip. Here's
- 13:55Speaker 3: Dwayne Johnson in the smashing Machine. Take a look at this.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Made me feel so stupid. Come in yours like you
- 14:00Speaker 1: guys were talking or something halfway across the globe. You
- 14:04Speaker 1: asked me to come.
- 14:05Speaker 4: I said, thank you, Oh yeah, and then you act
- 14:07Speaker 4: like a stick in front of your friend. Don't call
- 14:09Speaker 4: me next time.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Please don't come. I'm lonely, trying to focus.
- 14:13Speaker 2: It has nothing to do with you.
- 14:16Speaker 1: For me, you don't even have time.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I just I just don't want to fight.
- 14:21Speaker 1: If I punched you in the face, yes, could we communicate.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Face? The biggest none in my life.
- 14:32Speaker 4: I'm so sorry.
- 14:33Speaker 2: We are ready for downstairs.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Come with me.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Thank you, I gotta control. I'm sorry. Oh god, really amazing.
- 14:51Speaker 1: We went great.
- 14:51Speaker 2: I stopped. Thank you brother. By the way, that Emily
- 14:54Speaker 2: she is just.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Come on, of course, bey you? Uh before you go out.
- 15:01Speaker 3: I just wanted to apologize because last time you were here, Yes,
- 15:04Speaker 3: things got a little out of control with that apologize.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I'm really sorry because I know we're friends.
- 15:10Speaker 3: When things got a little heated and I thought that
- 15:12Speaker 3: you were going to do the same thing I was
- 15:13Speaker 3: going to do.
- 15:14Speaker 1: But I didn't know that you weren't.
- 15:16Speaker 2: But I didn't know I was either. I didn't.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Know that.
- 15:20Speaker 3: But here's a clip from Dwayne's last appearance on the
- 15:23Speaker 3: show Here you Go.
- 15:24Speaker 1: No, come on, oh, I apologized. I wow, that wasn't
- 15:34Speaker 1: what is the blue? I covered you in feathers? I
- 15:39Speaker 1: didn't know. I thought you had a breakaway pillow.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Yeah is that what you thought?
- 15:43Speaker 1: Yes?
- 15:43Speaker 3: OK, so I mine breakaway. Unfortunately I left nothing on me.
- 15:48Speaker 2: And well, listen, here's the thing. You know me. We've
- 15:50Speaker 2: known each other for twenty years.
- 15:52Speaker 4: I forgive, thank you, I forgive, I forgive, thank you,
- 15:55Speaker 4: But I don't forget.
- 16:01Speaker 2: But a little a little pillow I got. I got
- 16:06Speaker 2: a little pillow. But you know, here's here's the thing.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Because I don't forget, I think I'm gonna need a
- 16:12Speaker 4: little help. So, ladies and gentlemen, the real smashing Machine
- 16:16Speaker 4: mister Mark Kerry's a pleasure.
- 16:27Speaker 1: It's a pleasure.
- 16:27Speaker 2: I got it right, I got shall we h? What
- 16:38Speaker 2: do you think you?
- 16:39Speaker 1: You got my back? I got you back all the time.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Shall we yeah? Shall shall we? Shall we?
