- 1:28Speaker 3: out in Las Vegas. This is one of my favorite
- 1:31Speaker 3: people I'm bringing on as a guest right now. And
- 1:34Speaker 3: nobody has more optimism about America, more insight about America.
- 1:41Speaker 4: He is again a.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Very good friend of mine, and occasionally when we do
- 1:45Speaker 3: a national gig, we'd like to bring him on just
- 1:47Speaker 3: so new ears and new eyes can see this guy
- 1:50Speaker 3: in action.
- 1:52Speaker 4: He is the president.
- 1:53Speaker 3: I'm a president Mohigan Sun Sports in entertainment and he's
- 1:57Speaker 3: a very great friend of mine. His name is Tom Canton,
- 2:00Speaker 3: and Tom, welcome to the show. Thanks for coming on.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I appreciate it.
- 2:06Speaker 1: You look good, Mo, you look good.
- 2:07Speaker 5: You know, if anybody is substituting, you know, they go
- 2:10Speaker 5: to the bullpen, they get Marianna Rivera to come in.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Man, you're the closer.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I wish I would have. Well you're looking good too, buddy.
- 2:20Speaker 4: How are you doing?
- 2:24Speaker 5: I always say busy and good. Those are two combinations
- 2:29Speaker 5: that the reason you get up every day in the morning.
- 2:32Speaker 6: You hope that you're busy.
- 2:34Speaker 5: You hope that you have something to do, and you
- 2:37Speaker 5: want to have a good day. Because time is our
- 2:39Speaker 5: greatest currency. Mo. You know that, you know how you
- 2:44Speaker 5: spend it defines our existence. If you waste time, you
- 2:48Speaker 5: waste it your life. So every day counts.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Every second counts, my friend, every second counts. I wanted
- 2:54Speaker 3: to bring you on tonight to talk a little bit
- 2:56Speaker 3: about patriotism. I opened my morning show with this this
- 2:59Speaker 3: morning and last week I actually talked a little bit
- 3:01Speaker 3: about it when I was filling in for Wayne. And
- 3:03Speaker 3: you know, there are certain criterias in my mind for patriotism,
- 3:06Speaker 3: but the bottom line is I wanted to ask you,
- 3:08Speaker 3: you've you've been around.
- 3:09Speaker 4: A little bit longer than me, not much longer than me,
- 3:11Speaker 4: but you.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Know, you go back to the sixties and the seventies,
- 3:16Speaker 3: I feel like we were more it was a more
- 3:17Speaker 3: patriotic time.
- 3:19Speaker 4: How do you how do you see it?
- 3:26Speaker 5: I wouldn't give up anything. I loved how I was raised.
- 3:31Speaker 5: I loved the time period I was raised. Growing up
- 3:36Speaker 5: in the sixties was wonderful. Uh yeah, we had our
- 3:41Speaker 5: we had our troubles, and we had the Vietnam War,
- 3:43Speaker 5: and we had a lot of things. But the home base,
- 3:47Speaker 5: your home base is where everything existed. Mom and Dad
- 3:51Speaker 5: were there most of the time. We had core values.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Most of the time. We were raised with right and
- 3:58Speaker 5: wrong most of the time. We weren't without our imperfections
- 4:03Speaker 5: and our troubles and all of that, but we seemed
- 4:06Speaker 5: to work it out. The advantage dot I had growing
- 4:10Speaker 5: up then versus now is we had no real twenty
- 4:15Speaker 5: four to seven anxiety. There was no anxiety for the
- 4:18Speaker 5: way the world was ticking every freaking second. We didn't
- 4:22Speaker 5: know about anything until later in the evening at six thirty,
- 4:26Speaker 5: when Walter Cronkite or Huntley Brinkley would sort of just
- 4:30Speaker 5: give us the news and in a confident way, in
- 4:34Speaker 5: a trusting way. There was no panel of people with
- 4:39Speaker 5: the agendas. There was no anger, no shouting. He just
- 4:43Speaker 5: straight up, you know, told us what was going on
- 4:45Speaker 5: in the world. And then we ended the night with
- 4:48Speaker 5: Johnny Carson, and Johnny didn't do political humor like these
- 4:52Speaker 5: guys do.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Every night.
- 4:55Speaker 5: And the Post just ran a thing today about only
- 4:58Speaker 5: one Republican or won. Anybody on the right was on
- 5:02Speaker 5: Colbert and all the rest of them didn't have any
- 5:06Speaker 5: and you know, it was it was a.
- 5:09Speaker 6: NonStop onslaught of hate.
- 5:11Speaker 5: So we didn't have any of that. Johnny didn't believe
- 5:14Speaker 5: in in politics and political humor. Yes, he had Reagan on,
- 5:18Speaker 5: but they were friends, and it was a minute or two,
- 5:21Speaker 5: you know, but it was congenial. It was you know,
- 5:25Speaker 5: friendship existed, you know, Reagan and Tip O'Neil hated each other,
- 5:30Speaker 5: but you didn't know it. There wasn't anyone running to
- 5:33Speaker 5: the mics like AOC and everybody, and you know they
- 5:37Speaker 5: couldn't they can't wait to hammer and degrade you.
- 5:41Speaker 2: It was.
- 5:41Speaker 5: It didn't exist. You know, things were done like that
- 5:44Speaker 5: in the back room. I wish Trump would have done
- 5:47Speaker 5: that in the back room when he had Lewinsky on.
- 5:50Speaker 5: I mean when they said in front of the world, basically,
- 5:54Speaker 5: you know, some some negative stuff about each other that
- 5:57Speaker 5: should have been in the back room.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So we didn't have any of that.
- 6:01Speaker 5: We you know, we played baseball, we had Little league.
- 6:05Speaker 5: In school, we said the Pledge of Legiance of the flag.
- 6:09Speaker 5: We sang the national anthem as one. There weren't two
- 6:12Speaker 5: national anthems. That would have been laughable. You know, we
- 6:16Speaker 5: were all one. We respected our elders, our teachers. My
- 6:23Speaker 5: mom always told me, man, she's got the teachers back,
- 6:26Speaker 5: you know. And you know, in school, we were taught history,
- 6:29Speaker 5: not revision this history, but history. We were proud of
- 6:33Speaker 5: our history. We learned some things, you know, and the
- 6:37Speaker 5: basics were there. I just felt that I was raised
- 6:42Speaker 5: at the right time. I really I have an eighteen
- 6:44Speaker 5: year old daughter and she's had a disadvantage growing up.
- 6:48Speaker 5: She's the anxiety and the complications every day. Social media
- 6:52Speaker 5: has destroyed our world, absolutely positively, the poison of our
- 6:57Speaker 5: young people.
- 6:58Speaker 6: So you know, anybody can do it.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Click, anybody can say anything, and it's believable and you
- 7:03Speaker 5: run with it, and there's an outrage and people are
- 7:06Speaker 5: fired and the world, your world is over and you
- 7:09Speaker 5: don't have a minute to defend yourself. It's just really different,
- 7:15Speaker 5: you know. So again I was, you know, and then
- 7:19Speaker 5: of course I know you're going to laugh, But when
- 7:21Speaker 5: the Beatles came on to the scene, it was just
- 7:24Speaker 5: an euphoria of music that we've never heard before and
- 7:29Speaker 5: optimism because we came off to Kennedy assassination.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Everybody was depressed and down.
- 7:34Speaker 5: And you know, we we figured it out. I always say,
- 7:37Speaker 5: there's always a way, and you know, our way was
- 7:40Speaker 5: believing in each other.
- 7:41Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Let me tell you something. I was raised in the
- 7:44Speaker 5: mixed neighborhood in a row home, inner City, and I
- 7:49Speaker 5: was a minority until I got to junior high school,
- 7:52Speaker 5: and you know, I was picked on, and talk about racism,
- 7:55Speaker 5: I was really picked I was, you know, one of
- 7:57Speaker 5: the few white people around, So I stood out and
- 8:00Speaker 5: I get it. I walked in there, I walked in
- 8:03Speaker 5: their shoes.
- 8:04Speaker 1: But here's the deal.
- 8:07Speaker 5: Later in life, we all became really good friends.
- 8:11Speaker 6: We stayed, we grew up together.
- 8:14Speaker 5: So while we were angry, you know, with you know,
- 8:17Speaker 5: biases and all of that at a young age where
- 8:19Speaker 5: we didn't know. Later when we got to high school,
- 8:22Speaker 5: on junior high, you know, I would go home with
- 8:25Speaker 5: them and everybody was sort of like our brother and sister.
- 8:29Speaker 5: We just had a good you know, and yes there
- 8:31Speaker 5: were racism and all that. But when Martin Luther King
- 8:33Speaker 5: got assassinated, they protected me. They said, you're going to
- 8:37Speaker 5: you know, you stay with us, you know, until until
- 8:40Speaker 5: we get home. They escorted me home. You know, I
- 8:42Speaker 5: remember things like that. So, yeah, it was it was
- 8:46Speaker 5: just a better time to be raised.
- 8:48Speaker 3: And you had said it before. You were actually the
- 8:50Speaker 3: first person to say it to me. I mean a
- 8:53Speaker 3: decade ago. You said it, you predicted it, and I
- 8:56Speaker 3: sat there saying, ah, I don't know about that, but
- 8:59Speaker 3: you said it. You said social media was going to
- 9:01Speaker 3: be the downfall of this country, and it certainly seems
- 9:04Speaker 3: like it is.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Oh, without question, I know there's benefits to it with
- 9:13Speaker 5: you know, Google, you can get information and it's helpful
- 9:16Speaker 5: in many ways.
- 9:17Speaker 4: The cell phone twenty.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Two years ago, I mean, we didn't have we didn't
- 9:21Speaker 5: have access to a lot of misinformation. We didn't have
- 9:25Speaker 5: access to a lot of anger. And to the minute,
- 9:28Speaker 5: somebody put us paint as a swastick around a building,
- 9:31Speaker 5: it was national news.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Now.
- 9:33Speaker 5: I mean then back then, you know, it was some idiot.
- 9:35Speaker 5: It was some idiot who just did that. But then
- 9:38Speaker 5: now it's painted as all people that, you know, we're
- 9:42Speaker 5: lumped in and categorized. That's what's wrong with the world,
- 9:46Speaker 5: you know, and everyone's blaming everyone, MAGA to democrats and
- 9:51Speaker 5: all that. You know, it's I don't I just go
- 9:54Speaker 5: back through those those young men, and they were young
- 9:59Speaker 5: who are found fathers, who who drafted this unbelievable blueprint.
- 10:05Speaker 5: If you read the words, it for the seventeen hundreds,
- 10:09Speaker 5: for them to sound the way they did, and to
- 10:12Speaker 5: write the way they did, and to have the thought
- 10:15Speaker 5: process the way they did of how they wanted to
- 10:18Speaker 5: frame a new world and you know, and execute it.
- 10:24Speaker 5: It's just they never imagined that we would be like
- 10:29Speaker 5: this today. It was not their intent. They didn't even
- 10:32Speaker 5: want political parties. Did you know that they didn't even
- 10:36Speaker 5: want Democrats and Republicans. They they thought that that would
- 10:39Speaker 5: be divisive. Oh geez, what did they know that we
- 10:43Speaker 5: don't know all these years later. It is divisive because
- 10:46Speaker 5: all they do is they get they once they get
- 10:48Speaker 5: into into office. There's all they do is is want
- 10:51Speaker 5: that power and they don't want to release it. And
- 10:54Speaker 5: you know the things that they that they blame is
- 10:57Speaker 5: now that the problems they created.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Tom.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Unfortunately the music's playing, it goes too quick. Tom's got
- 11:02Speaker 4: a book. You can look for it. It's called Book
- 11:04Speaker 4: Them right, Book Them, that's what it calls. It's called.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Yes, it's about the entertainment world.
- 11:12Speaker 3: With your best I wanted to bring that up because nobody,
- 11:15Speaker 3: I mean, you have built this empire, partly built this
- 11:18Speaker 3: empire at Mohegan Sun, and you're doing magnifics and stuff.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Over after the arena. Some of the biggest acts in
- 11:23Speaker 4: the world come rolling through there. So Tom, I got
- 11:26Speaker 4: a run though I'm out of time, but I appreciate
- 11:28Speaker 4: you and I'll see you soon. Okay, Pal, I love
- 11:32Speaker 4: it man having me on, You got it, buddy.
- 11:35Speaker 3: We would have kept him on, but his signal was
- 11:37Speaker 3: a little bit wacky out there, but anyway, that's a
- 11:40Speaker 3: great Tom cantelling over at Morgan Sun.
- 11:41Speaker 1: We'll take a break, we'll come back.

- 16:34Speaker 3: first Street, East fifty second Streets in midtown Manhattan. One
- 16:38Speaker 3: person has been shot, multiple nine to eleven calls flooding
- 16:40Speaker 3: in So if that changes here as we continue this half.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Hour or hour, I will let you know about that.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Where do you think most of the people on the
- 16:51Speaker 3: planet pray? What country praise more than any other country?
- 16:57Speaker 3: Think about this for a second, your guests, Well, people
- 17:03Speaker 3: in Indonesia pray more than anywhere. Now ninety of the
- 17:06Speaker 3: people pray in Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brazil, Bangladesh, Ghana,
- 17:14Speaker 3: Sri Lanka, and Colombia round out the top ten. I
- 17:17Speaker 3: hate to be sarcastic, but those countries, not all of
- 17:20Speaker 3: them are doing all that great. So I hate to
- 17:22Speaker 3: say that praying ain't working. And in places like you know, well,
- 17:29Speaker 3: Ghana and Nigeria and Kenya.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Not so good? Not so good?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Anyway? Where is the United States on this? I don't
- 17:35Speaker 3: even see them. Oh they're there. Forty four percent of
- 17:37Speaker 3: the people pray? Do you pray? I'm having a big

- 19:16Speaker 3: the environment.
- 19:17Speaker 4: I'm a huge animal fan and all of that stuff.
- 19:19Speaker 4: I have plenty of room to negotiate stuff.
- 19:23Speaker 3: But if there was somebody on the other side of
- 19:26Speaker 3: the aisle that was engaging and energetic and truthful and honest,
- 19:31Speaker 3: and somebody that I could count on and has a
- 19:33Speaker 3: leadership qualities, I'd be saying, Okay, that's either a that's
- 19:37Speaker 3: a problem for the Republicans, or maybe it's a possible
- 19:39Speaker 3: change of direction for the Democrats.
- 19:41Speaker 4: They got nobody, nobody. It's you know, it's like zombie nation.
- 19:47Speaker 4: It's literally like walking dead. There's nobody on that side
- 19:50Speaker 4: of the aisle that I would let. If I had
- 19:52Speaker 4: a dog. I used to have a couple of dogs,
- 19:54Speaker 4: but they're going.
- 19:55Speaker 3: But if I had a dog, I wouldn't let them
- 19:57Speaker 3: dog sit for a weekend, none of them.
- 20:00Speaker 4: I don't trust him, so thirty five year lowd. That
- 20:02Speaker 4: makes sense to me and makes perfect sense to me.

- 23:23Speaker 3: a good pal of the show and a good friend
- 23:24Speaker 3: of mine.
- 23:25Speaker 4: Hans Despain. Hans, how are you, my friend?
- 23:29Speaker 6: I'm doing wellly. How are you?
- 23:31Speaker 1: Nice to see you.
- 23:32Speaker 6: It's nice to see you looking handsome as usual.
- 23:39Speaker 4: You ruin my image just.
- 23:43Speaker 6: I know, my you know, I think God must be
- 23:45Speaker 6: so upset with you, because you know, you have all
- 23:48Speaker 6: these great looks and all this athletic ability. And what
- 23:52Speaker 6: are you doing. You're you're on the radio talking politics.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Look at you. You got the suit and tie on tonight. Man,
- 23:57Speaker 4: you're looking like a million bucks kid.
- 23:59Speaker 6: I'm trying to keep up.
- 24:00Speaker 7: Man.
- 24:00Speaker 6: I felt totally uh count done last time I came
- 24:07Speaker 6: on the show.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Well, listen, we have a lot to talk about. We
- 24:10Speaker 3: always run out of time. So let's start with this
- 24:14Speaker 3: gigantic deal with the European Union and let me just
- 24:19Speaker 3: get out of the way.
- 24:20Speaker 4: You explain it, and you know it a lot more
- 24:22Speaker 4: than I could ever know it so well. I mean, I.
- 24:26Speaker 6: Have another gripe with you first, you know, because you
- 24:28Speaker 6: talked about all these you know, religion and uh, you know,
- 24:33Speaker 6: on topics like that. Uh, and then you have me
- 24:36Speaker 6: come on and talk about trade deal with EU.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Hu hum.
- 24:41Speaker 6: But I can do it all right, And by the way,
- 24:47Speaker 6: have to say you know what, what praying does. It
- 24:49Speaker 6: changes you within right, it doesn't change the world changed,
- 24:53Speaker 6: it should change you again if you're if you're like
- 24:57Speaker 6: if you're praying like Huckleberry Finn, you know for fish hooks,
- 25:03Speaker 6: it's not going to work.
- 25:04Speaker 4: That's gonna work. It's going to be a little bit more.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:07Speaker 3: But I would think that the people, the people in
- 25:10Speaker 3: those places must be wonderful people in their hearts and
- 25:13Speaker 3: their souls. I mean, they live in some cases in
- 25:16Speaker 3: just absolute despair, and yet they keep praying.
- 25:18Speaker 4: It's pretty amazing.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Well, you know.
- 25:22Speaker 6: That's the I think the you know what, if you're
- 25:27Speaker 6: in a tough social situation, which is what most of
- 25:30Speaker 6: us are in to some degree. I mean, we're fortunate
- 25:33Speaker 6: enough to be in a very prosperous nation that has
- 25:39Speaker 6: served at least you and I will and and lots
- 25:42Speaker 6: of other people. But you know, you need to know
- 25:47Speaker 6: when to stand up and fight, you know, stand up
- 25:50Speaker 6: and make a change and not just go with the flow.
- 25:53Speaker 6: And that's where the praying comes in. And that's a
- 25:56Speaker 6: hard thing to do. You know, when when do you
- 25:59Speaker 6: stand up? And and you know, like our revolutionary forefathers
- 26:04Speaker 6: and mothers, right they thought they were going to lose
- 26:07Speaker 6: that protest, They thought they were going to just all
- 26:10Speaker 6: hang together, but they decided to take a stand, And
- 26:16Speaker 6: you know, I think that's an important moment and that
- 26:19Speaker 6: you know, let's segue into to European Union because you know,
- 26:25Speaker 6: whatever the critics want to say about Trump, definitely what
- 26:29Speaker 6: we can say very strongly and positive, and I hope
- 26:32Speaker 6: anybody would agree with this. Whether Trump is right or wrong,
- 26:35Speaker 6: he's taking a stance. You know, he is unhappy with
- 26:40Speaker 6: the global economic order. You know that I don't agree
- 26:45Speaker 6: with the tariffs. I'm on the public record pretty strongly
- 26:49Speaker 6: in opposition to them, but I would totally embrace and
- 26:55Speaker 6: I'm talking about twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen Trump. We can
- 26:59Speaker 6: make an argument the candidate Trump in twenty fifteen, the
- 27:03Speaker 6: primary issue was was the border, but for sure second,
- 27:12Speaker 6: if not even as important as the border, was trade.
- 27:17Speaker 6: And Trump talked about endless league globalists, and they're ruining
- 27:23Speaker 6: our country, they're stealing our jobs, they're ruining our manufacturing,
- 27:28Speaker 6: so on and so forth. So this has been on
- 27:30Speaker 6: this agenda for a very very long time. And as
- 27:34Speaker 6: you and I have talked ourselves, no.
- 27:48Speaker 3: We lost you for a second, I think you're back
- 27:49Speaker 3: on Sorry, that's okay, Sorry, you're there for audio.
- 27:54Speaker 6: He uses very colorful He uses a very colorful language
- 28:00Speaker 6: to talk about, you know, how trade has worked against us.
- 28:06Speaker 6: But if you step away from that, his real complaint
- 28:10Speaker 6: is he doesn't like those international institutions, that is to say,
- 28:14Speaker 6: World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, World Bank. Right,
- 28:19Speaker 6: he's opposed to them. And so, you know, I think
- 28:23Speaker 6: that the tariffs that he's imposed are far less economic,
- 28:28Speaker 6: even though you know, he'll brag about the money that
- 28:30Speaker 6: we'll bring to the US in taxes. But it's political,
- 28:36Speaker 6: and you know, yesterday was a very important political moment,
- 28:42Speaker 6: and I think unambiguously Trump won spectacularly. At a political level,
- 28:49Speaker 6: I have a lot more hesitations. I'm you know, you
- 28:53Speaker 6: called yourself middle of the road. I don't know if
- 28:55Speaker 6: I'm middle of the road or not. I think I'm
- 28:58Speaker 6: far right on some issues and left on others. But
- 29:03Speaker 6: I tried to get get it right and the you know,
- 29:11Speaker 6: I worry about the economic consequences of.
- 29:15Speaker 1: The trade deal with the EU, but.
- 29:18Speaker 6: I think politically Trump pulled off a pretty brilliant maneuver.
- 29:26Speaker 1: You know, So the.
- 29:28Speaker 6: Basic details if people haven't been following too closely. Seven
- 29:33Speaker 6: hundred and fifty billion, that's almost a trillion dollars in
- 29:39Speaker 6: US energy that the US is sorry that the EU
- 29:43Speaker 6: has agreed to buy six hundred billion dollars.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I mean this.
- 29:48Speaker 6: You know, you and I have talked about Stephen Moran's
- 29:53Speaker 6: White House briefing when the terrorists were announced, and he
- 29:59Speaker 6: was asking, you know, and I see these bullet points
- 30:02Speaker 6: as almost a joke. You know that that countries send
- 30:06Speaker 6: US money, you know, and not be tariffed. But EU
- 30:11Speaker 6: was sending US money for infrastructure six hundred billion dollars.
- 30:16Speaker 6: This is a massive amount of money, uh, you know,
- 30:21Speaker 6: and fifteen tariffs of course, and then also US military goods.
- 30:25Speaker 6: It's not clear to me the exact dollar amount. The
- 30:29Speaker 6: White House itself says it's a significant amount, so it
- 30:32Speaker 6: doesn't even put a dollar amount on it. But those
- 30:34Speaker 6: are the four major issues that have come up. And
- 30:39Speaker 6: as I said, you know, politically, it's it's a huge
- 30:42Speaker 6: win for Trump. And I can tell you about the
- 30:45Speaker 6: winterers and losers lye. Unless you'd like me to take
- 30:48Speaker 6: a breath.
- 30:48Speaker 3: And here you're I would definitely like that, boy, I
- 30:52Speaker 3: would definitely.
- 30:53Speaker 4: I want you to tell me the winners and losers.
- 30:54Speaker 3: But here, just real quick, the EU officials said that
- 30:57Speaker 3: estimated six hundred billion will add to the EU's current
- 31:01Speaker 3: two point eight trillion private investments to the US.
- 31:05Speaker 4: So that was a question.
- 31:06Speaker 3: I was going to ask you the added amount of
- 31:08Speaker 3: money that we're talking about. This is on top of
- 31:10Speaker 3: what they're already doing, right, I mean, that's the added
- 31:13Speaker 3: what they're gonna deal with the United States.
- 31:15Speaker 6: Correct, That is correct, exactly, And you know this is
- 31:19Speaker 6: to address the trade deficit that Trump is You know,
- 31:23Speaker 6: I don't have the same anxieties that Trump in his
- 31:27Speaker 6: economic advisors have about trade deficits, but it's a worthy debate.
- 31:32Speaker 6: They don't like them, and this is because for sure,
- 31:37Speaker 6: trade deficits end up adding to your domestic federal budget deficits.
- 31:43Speaker 6: I won't get into the nitty gritty on that relationship,
- 31:47Speaker 6: but they feel like if they get the deficits down,
- 31:50Speaker 6: they can get the trade deficits, they can get the
- 31:54Speaker 6: domestic federal budget deficit stamp. That's the idea.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Okay, we're talking to Hans dest paying economics lecturing again.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Professor at UMass amherst In Massachusetts, and before we if
- 32:06Speaker 3: I get going on the second part of this, because
- 32:08Speaker 3: I want to get the winners and losers. I know
- 32:09Speaker 3: the music is going to start playing here in just
- 32:11Speaker 3: a second, so I want to make sure we get
- 32:13Speaker 3: the winners and losers in in its entirety. But just
- 32:16Speaker 3: before we we'll go back to the tariff deal, but
- 32:19Speaker 3: before we have to take this first break, and hopefully
- 32:21Speaker 3: you can stay over with us on I mean as
- 32:24Speaker 3: far as right now the economy, right, the economy has
- 32:27Speaker 3: an exclamation point at the end of it.
- 32:29Speaker 4: It's about as strong as it's been in a long
- 32:32Speaker 4: long time.
- 32:32Speaker 6: Right, Yeah, Well, look, yes, I think the fundamentals are
- 32:39Speaker 6: very strong. I am more worried about some background that
- 32:44Speaker 6: we can talk about, you know, at the break, if
- 32:45Speaker 6: you would like to.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Yeah, let's do that though, yes, yeah, and I'm sorry, yeah,
- 32:49Speaker 3: because because we're going to take a break, we'll come
- 32:51Speaker 3: we'll come back with Hans dest Ban will join us
- 32:53Speaker 3: on the other side, and we'll just turn him loose,
- 32:55Speaker 3: give us the winners and losers and tell us how
- 32:58Speaker 3: strong or the perception of.
- 33:01Speaker 4: How strong the United States economy is. When we come back.

- 37:01Speaker 3: friend of my morning show here in Connecticut. Love having
- 37:05Speaker 3: him on, Hans Destbay, US Amherst economics professor. So all right, Hans,
- 37:10Speaker 3: you were going to tell me winners and losers. Let's
- 37:12Speaker 3: do that first. Winners and losers of the tariffs, in
- 37:16Speaker 3: particularly the EU deal, Well, I.
- 37:20Speaker 6: Mean it cuts you know, pretty strictly down good for
- 37:26Speaker 6: the US, bad for the EU. But as I already said, Trump,
- 37:30Speaker 6: I think is the biggest winner, and I mean it
- 37:33Speaker 6: in a political way. The financial markets are big winners.
- 37:39Speaker 6: Coming to an agreement gives some stability, whether they like
- 37:42Speaker 6: it or not. They know where to put money now,
- 37:45Speaker 6: US carmakers, US military, industrial producers, energy just a massive
- 37:54Speaker 6: coud'stois and US and EU aviation products will be winners
- 38:02Speaker 6: for sure. Losers EU pharmaceuticals, EU car makers, especially Germany
- 38:07Speaker 6: car makers. EU. Let me come back to that. But
- 38:16Speaker 6: bretton Wood economic institutions that we were talking about earlier,
- 38:22Speaker 6: WTO and such, this is a massive blow to their responsibilities,
- 38:29Speaker 6: and so this will be very interesting to see how
- 38:32Speaker 6: it develops and if there will be changes or what
- 38:36Speaker 6: will happen in that evolution. And US consumers will pay
- 38:41Speaker 6: higher prices for sure, so I would put them on
- 38:44Speaker 6: the loser side. The three additional areas that I think
- 38:50Speaker 6: become very very importantly is that even though Trump won
- 38:56Speaker 6: this at a political level, the tensions between the US
- 39:00Speaker 6: and the EU still remain. So this is a medium
- 39:06Speaker 6: and longer term situation that we have to see develop.
- 39:09Speaker 6: I think one of the reasons EU agreed to this
- 39:14Speaker 6: is they know our political system will have a new
- 39:16Speaker 6: leader in a few years and they might be able
- 39:19Speaker 6: to just renegotiate the whole thing.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Okay, but the tensions are replyigh.
- 39:24Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead, No, No, that was gonna be what
- 39:28Speaker 3: I asked you.
- 39:29Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Like, why would they do it if it
- 39:31Speaker 4: was so one sided.
- 39:34Speaker 6: Yeah, So they had no cards, zero cards. So and
- 39:40Speaker 6: I think Trump was very serious of walking out of
- 39:43Speaker 6: that room. So they wanted to just bring some stability.
- 39:48Speaker 6: But that will lead to the next thing, which is
- 39:51Speaker 6: the you know, they are going to look to decouple
- 39:54Speaker 6: from the US in the long term in my opinion,
- 39:57Speaker 6: so that is not going to happen during Trump's term.
- 40:01Speaker 6: It won't happen that fast. They'll begin it, and we
- 40:04Speaker 6: can talk about and see it happening, but it won't.
- 40:07Speaker 6: The decoupling won't be significant until ten years unless something
- 40:11Speaker 6: else turns around. But the tensions within the EU itself,
- 40:15Speaker 6: there's large disagreements. If you look at the responses from
- 40:19Speaker 6: the left, a lot of them are saying, you know,
- 40:21Speaker 6: some of these countries within the EU will not agree
- 40:24Speaker 6: to it, they won't get any deal done. I totally disagree.
- 40:27Speaker 6: I think they're all going to end up agreeing to
- 40:29Speaker 6: it in the end, but that's going to cause tensions
- 40:32Speaker 6: within the EU itself, and that is not good for
- 40:36Speaker 6: the US in my opinion. You know, EU is I
- 40:40Speaker 6: think an important institutional conglomeration for US and our security
- 40:47Speaker 6: and our allies and so on and so forth. So
- 40:50Speaker 6: I'm concerned with those tensions one more, which I think
- 40:53Speaker 6: is very important. One of the big winners today, one
- 40:56Speaker 6: of the big winners is China because of those tensions.
- 41:00Speaker 6: What it means is it pushes a lot of countries
- 41:03Speaker 6: towards China because it's a little bit more predictable. Because
- 41:06Speaker 6: if you get you know, Kamala Harris, God forbid, which
- 41:11Speaker 6: you know, I don't even think that's on the radar screen,
- 41:12Speaker 6: but I'm just trying to make a point, you're going
- 41:15Speaker 6: to get in about face on what's going on now.
- 41:17Speaker 6: And so there's gonna be a lot of countries that
- 41:20Speaker 6: are going to feel a little bit more comfortable to
- 41:22Speaker 6: joining the bricks. And that's a real force in the
- 41:24Speaker 6: global order right now. So in my opinion, China ends
- 41:29Speaker 6: up being one of the big winners here.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Hans des Span our guests, and unfortunately we always run
- 41:34Speaker 3: out of time very very quickly. I know you write
- 41:36Speaker 3: a lot of different stuff. Have you written anything we
- 41:38Speaker 3: need to read recently?
- 41:42Speaker 6: I haven't. I'm still you know, I've made a transition recently,
- 41:48Speaker 6: as you know, Lee and this summer, as my priorities
- 41:53Speaker 6: have been elsewhere, but I will be things will be
- 41:57Speaker 6: coming out.
- 41:58Speaker 4: Well, we love that wanting. We want to hear from you.
- 42:01Speaker 3: We love it so but you are at least for
- 42:04Speaker 3: the short term here, at least in the next halfway decade.
- 42:11Speaker 3: This is a positive for America if the next group
- 42:15Speaker 3: of leadership can come along and sort of soften the negotiation,
- 42:19Speaker 3: and then maybe it's a win win long term.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Right. Oh no, you think that's too gone, too far.
- 42:24Speaker 6: One year, I will, I will, I'm confident for one
- 42:26Speaker 6: year after that, I'm I don't know, all right. I'm
- 42:30Speaker 6: not saying it's good or bad.
- 42:32Speaker 3: I don't know all right, brother, listen, I got it run.
- 42:34Speaker 3: Unfortunately the music's play. I always love talking to you.
