- 1:59Speaker 2: coming to you live from the Situation Room the Executive Mansion.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I am Vince right. Thank you for tuning in. Big
- 2:08Speaker 2: Show tonight. Lots to talk about Gophers Vikings football, in
- 2:12Speaker 2: particular as the Minnesota Twins are basically wrapping up a
- 2:16Speaker 2: season that they would like to forget Minnesota Wild starting
- 2:20Speaker 2: their season. They got a pregame matchup tonight with Dallas
- 2:25Speaker 2: and well, folks, I'm gonna tell you one other thing.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Here is one thing about our guest, mister j Paternal
- 2:36Speaker 2: Obviously you know his father Joe Penn, state head coach.
- 2:42Speaker 2: But Jay is pretty accomplished in his own right. And
- 2:46Speaker 2: Jay is going to come on. In particular, he's going
- 2:49Speaker 2: to be talking about his his new book Blitz the
- 2:55Speaker 2: all out pressure of college Football's new era. But you know,
- 2:59Speaker 2: give us some stories on growing as I say, growing
- 3:02Speaker 2: up Jay obviously growing up with that last name in
- 3:05Speaker 2: state college, and also just about him, you know, I mean,
- 3:09Speaker 2: Jay is an accomplished coach, played for his dad at
- 3:13Speaker 2: Penn State. So he's also a Penn State trustee as well.
- 3:18Speaker 2: So really kind of a timely interview with Nil really
- 3:23Speaker 2: blowing up and you know, going beyond in il to
- 3:26Speaker 2: be perfectly honest with you. So in just a couple
- 3:28Speaker 2: of minutes, we're gonna have Jay paternal on, like I said,
- 3:33Speaker 2: author philanthropist at this point, he's a host TV shows
- 3:38Speaker 2: podcast out there regarding Penn State football. So very very
- 3:42Speaker 2: good interview coming up here. But before we get to that,
- 3:45Speaker 2: let's just give a quick rundown here, because the Minnesota
- 3:51Speaker 2: Gophers have in a sense what I've called and what
- 3:54Speaker 2: a lot of people have called a must win game
- 3:56Speaker 2: all of a sudden with the Rutgers scout Scarlet Knight,
- 4:00Speaker 2: And you know, sure nobody thought that that would maybe
- 4:06Speaker 2: be the case this early, but that is exactly what
- 4:09Speaker 2: is happening here, coming off of that big disappointing loss
- 4:14Speaker 2: out in California. Because then California last week went out
- 4:18Speaker 2: and just got shellacked. They got shut out by San
- 4:22Speaker 2: Diego State. I think it was like thirty five to
- 4:24Speaker 2: nothing something like that. So all of a sudden and
- 4:28Speaker 2: Rutgers coming in off of a even though they lost
- 4:31Speaker 2: to the Iowa hawk Gys made it a game for
- 4:36Speaker 2: much of that out there, and they were playing at
- 4:40Speaker 2: home as well, but they had a really good opportunity
- 4:42Speaker 2: to take out Iowa. They almost did, but they did not.
- 4:45Speaker 2: But aighthan caliac manus looking good, and all of a sudden,
- 4:50Speaker 2: the Gophers looking at not only last year's lost the Rutgers,
- 4:56Speaker 2: but you know, if they lose this game go to
- 5:00Speaker 2: and two. Well, it gets kind of interesting in the
- 5:07Speaker 2: schedule because you can't really say, I mean, maybe the
- 5:12Speaker 2: Purdue game might be there's no guaranteed win. I guess
- 5:16Speaker 2: what the sports governor is trying to say here, folks.
- 5:19Speaker 2: So Saturday eleven am over at Huntington Banks Stadium, Minnesota
- 5:24Speaker 2: versus Rutgers. And as much as we know Coy Parrich
- 5:29Speaker 2: can do at all, I think we just need to
- 5:31Speaker 2: let him be the defensive star that he is. Yeah
- 5:37Speaker 2: he can run back kicks, Yeah that you can run
- 5:39Speaker 2: some plays on the offensive side of the ball. I
- 5:41Speaker 2: just don't know if it's needed. And you know, sure
- 5:45Speaker 2: he had a rough game last week. And I'm not
- 5:47Speaker 2: just saying, hey, just cut out everything, but I really
- 5:51Speaker 2: don't think we need to see him back there taking
- 5:53Speaker 2: every single kickoff and punt and all that stuff. I
- 5:57Speaker 2: think the Gophers, you know, I'm really impressed with Drake
- 6:00Speaker 2: Lindsay so far at quarterback. We need some of these
- 6:04Speaker 2: receivers to step up outside of Brockington, and I think
- 6:08Speaker 2: the Gophers can be just fine. Now. What it's going
- 6:13Speaker 2: to take to beat Rutgers just good solid football. And
- 6:17Speaker 2: the Gophers can't really make any mistakes. Those mistakes that
- 6:20Speaker 2: popped up, you know, out in the Bay Area can't
- 6:23Speaker 2: be made here and expect to beat Rutgers. You know,
- 6:26Speaker 2: we don't. That's and plus we still don't know a
- 6:29Speaker 2: lot about this team as well. I think that's the
- 6:31Speaker 2: other thing too. You know, this is not a senior
- 6:35Speaker 2: laden team. This is a whole new team, and we
- 6:38Speaker 2: got to see how they bounce back. So that's what
- 6:40Speaker 2: I'm really interested in. You know, forget kind of some
- 6:44Speaker 2: of these stats and this and that. Just come out
- 6:46Speaker 2: and play some solid football, and I think they should
- 6:49Speaker 2: be able to beat Rutgers. I'm not gonna sit here
- 6:52Speaker 2: and then say, oh, they should win by ten whatever,
- 6:55Speaker 2: this or that. Just get to win at this point,
- 6:58Speaker 2: because then you got to go to Ohio and then However,
- 7:01Speaker 2: like I said, you got Purdue Nebraska and I will
- 7:04Speaker 2: coming up. So yeah, you got to get stuff right
- 7:08Speaker 2: here and go for land. Excuse me, Minnesota Vikings. Carson Wentz,
- 7:14Speaker 2: he got to win over a well a beliegued Cincinnati team.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Cincinnati obviously lost Joe Burrow, but I think the Vikings,
- 7:25Speaker 2: you know, they they did what they had to do.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Steady the ship is really what they had to do,
- 7:31Speaker 2: and they did that with Carson Wentz last week, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 2: So obviously then comes the quarterback fodder. Hey, do you
- 7:40Speaker 2: you know what happens if he starts playing? Well, what
- 7:42Speaker 2: happens if the Vikings start winning, well, then you keep
- 7:45Speaker 2: playing them. You know, JJ McCarthy's is still a young
- 7:50Speaker 2: quarterback that's literally played a you know, literally a game
- 7:53Speaker 2: or two. So you know, I'm with whoever has the
- 7:58Speaker 2: hot hand, whoever gets to win, because the Vikings are
- 8:01Speaker 2: built to win now. We're not really looking for some
- 8:05Speaker 2: project and we want to win now with this Minnesota
- 8:08Speaker 2: Vikings team, so that is what we need to do.
- 8:16Speaker 2: So as the Vikings are now over in Europe for
- 8:20Speaker 2: a two game swing against Cleveland and Pittsburgh. First one
- 8:23Speaker 2: up here in Ireland against Aaron Rodgers and no Steelers
- 8:27Speaker 2: next week or next week this weekend, and I think
- 8:31Speaker 2: the Vikings find a way to win that game, and
- 8:36Speaker 2: you know, keep it going over there in Europe, and
- 8:38Speaker 2: I think they find a way to beat Cleveland. Then yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 2: all of a sudden, the talk. It's interesting because let's
- 8:43Speaker 2: say Carson Wentz comes in, we win these next couple games,
- 8:48Speaker 2: and I just say, again, roll with the excuse me
- 8:51Speaker 2: throw today. Roll with the hot hand, people, Roll with
- 8:55Speaker 2: the hot hand. That's all I'm saying. All right, I
- 8:58Speaker 2: just wanted to jump in there real quick on the
- 9:00Speaker 2: local football scene here because we got a very lengthy
- 9:03Speaker 2: interview with Jay Paternal Like I said, he is a
- 9:08Speaker 2: member of the Penn State University Board of Trustees. He
- 9:14Speaker 2: you know, hosts Penn State football television shows, podcasts. He
- 9:19Speaker 2: does it all out there. Obviously with the name like that,
- 9:22Speaker 2: everybody knows who you are. So let's do this. We
- 9:26Speaker 2: are gonna get to the interview and we're gonna learn
- 9:30Speaker 2: about Jay and also his take too, because he's really
- 9:33Speaker 2: becoming one of the leaders on this nil transfer portal
- 9:38Speaker 2: just everything that's going on with college sports in terms
- 9:41Speaker 2: of pay for play and how the bubble burst on
- 9:44Speaker 2: the nil side of things and went from there. So
- 9:48Speaker 2: with that being said, ladies and gentlemen, mister J. Paternal
- 9:56Speaker 2: all right, everybody, Vince right the sports Governor of Minnesota
- 9:59Speaker 2: with you, and we have a very special guest today.
- 10:03Speaker 2: You can probably see by that last name, but Jay
- 10:05Speaker 2: Paternal is joining us from Pennsylvania out there out east.
- 10:11Speaker 2: And one thing that I'm very excited to talk to
- 10:14Speaker 2: Jay about not only you know, working playing for his
- 10:20Speaker 2: legendary father, but we're also going to get into the
- 10:24Speaker 2: big penn State Oregon game obviously this weekend, but also
- 10:27Speaker 2: Jay's book and bear with me here as I got
- 10:30Speaker 2: the notes because it's a nice long title blitz the
- 10:33Speaker 2: all out pressure of college football's new era and Gopher fans,
- 10:37Speaker 2: as you know, with the Dinky Town collective here being
- 10:41Speaker 2: the Gophers main nil. This is a huge thing, a
- 10:44Speaker 2: huge topic at the University of Minnesota. So Jay's appearance
- 10:48Speaker 2: on the Sports dun Right Podcast is right on time.
- 10:50Speaker 2: So with that, mister J. Paternal, welcome to the Sports
- 10:53Speaker 2: dun Right Podcast.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Great to be here.
- 10:56Speaker 2: All right, Well, let's get started, and you know, like
- 10:59Speaker 2: I was telling you kind of before, we jumped on
- 11:01Speaker 2: there here talk about growing up Jay Paternal because you know,
- 11:05Speaker 2: we don't even have to talk about your father and
- 11:07Speaker 2: his accolades and what he did as you know, one
- 11:11Speaker 2: of them out rushmore of college football coaches in my opinion,
- 11:15Speaker 2: But what was that like for you growing up as
- 11:18Speaker 2: Jay Paternal? That last name, I mean so distinctive and everything.
- 11:24Speaker 2: What was that like, you know, growing up for you?
- 11:26Speaker 3: Well, you know, I don't have anything else to compare
- 11:29Speaker 3: it to, you know what I mean, Like, I don't
- 11:30Speaker 3: know how different it was, but it was different, there's
- 11:33Speaker 3: no question, And it was at a lot of exciting
- 11:35Speaker 3: things happened in my life because you were around certain
- 11:38Speaker 3: things and so but you know, with everything in life,
- 11:41Speaker 3: you get something, you have to give something up. So
- 11:43Speaker 3: there were things that my dad wasn't able to go
- 11:45Speaker 3: to or wasn't around for because he was recruiting or
- 11:48Speaker 3: because he was responsible to do things you know, be
- 11:52Speaker 3: a coach do one hundred and five hundred and twenty guys.
- 11:55Speaker 3: But it was it was the great memories. And I
- 11:59Speaker 3: was four that I got to play for him, which
- 12:01Speaker 3: gave me another perspective and a connection that almost like
- 12:05Speaker 3: you know when when guys father's coached your little league
- 12:08Speaker 3: teams or run their boy scout troops or whatever. They
- 12:11Speaker 3: get that kind of common experience. Didn't have that until
- 12:14Speaker 3: I became a player and then coach for him for
- 12:16Speaker 3: seventeen years. So every phase of that that I wouldn't
- 12:20Speaker 3: trade it for anything else in the world, And certainly
- 12:23Speaker 3: the seventeen years I coached with him. I mean I
- 12:26Speaker 3: would never give anything back for those. Those were just
- 12:28Speaker 3: incredible years. But as a kid, you just didn't know
- 12:31Speaker 3: any different. Now it's funny because you know, when you
- 12:34Speaker 3: grew up to state college, everyody kN who you were.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Somebody made a big deal out of it. Except one
- 12:38Speaker 3: of my best friends in kindergarten knew my dad was
- 12:41Speaker 3: involved in football, knew that he was famous. He thought
- 12:43Speaker 3: my dad and he's knew his name was Joe. He
- 12:45Speaker 3: thought it was Joe Namath. Oh, okay, my mom's like
- 12:49Speaker 3: dad Joe name was not really my type, you know.
- 12:55Speaker 2: And that's the thing, because one of the main reasons
- 12:59Speaker 2: I want to have you on and your dad was
- 13:02Speaker 2: such a legendary coach. Obviously, let's just very quickly talk
- 13:05Speaker 2: about being a player for him at Penn State, and
- 13:08Speaker 2: then Yeah, it spanned a little bit on coaching because
- 13:11Speaker 2: you you know, you were there for almost twenty years coaching,
- 13:14Speaker 2: and you know, I mean I've I've read your background,
- 13:17Speaker 2: I've seen what people have said about you as a coach.
- 13:19Speaker 2: So it's not like, you know, hey, it's just you know,
- 13:22Speaker 2: coach paternal sons just here because he's coach paternal son.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Jay knows football.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I appreciate you saying it. So I think from
- 13:30Speaker 3: a standpoint of being on a team, you know, I
- 13:33Speaker 3: wasn't a guy that got recruited by them. I walked
- 13:36Speaker 3: on decent player, not you know, good enough to play elsewhere,
- 13:40Speaker 3: but just wanted to be part of something really exciting
- 13:43Speaker 3: like Penn State and got my butt kicked in practice
- 13:46Speaker 3: and worked my web depth chart to where you know,
- 13:49Speaker 3: and you know, I was an injury away at one
- 13:51Speaker 3: point from getting into a meaningful games, but got gotten
- 13:55Speaker 3: a game or two. But the experience was great in that,
- 14:01Speaker 3: you know, I got to see what it was all about.
- 14:04Speaker 3: I got to be part of something really special and
- 14:06Speaker 3: learned a lot of life lessons that have carried me through.
- 14:10Speaker 3: So that part was a lot of fun. My first
- 14:13Speaker 3: practice in full pads just absolutely got the you know,
- 14:16Speaker 3: craft kicked out of me, partly because of my dad's
- 14:19Speaker 3: There's probably a lot of guys that want to tackle me,
- 14:21Speaker 3: but they can't. You're the standard. I'm like, oh, thank
- 14:24Speaker 3: you that. But the first time I got hit, my
- 14:26Speaker 3: helmets all messed up and I get up looking for
- 14:29Speaker 3: I thought I might get some sympathy. But I should
- 14:31Speaker 3: have known better. He was laughing, right, But it was
- 14:34Speaker 3: a great experience. And then and then when I came
- 14:36Speaker 3: back and coached. You know, I went away for five
- 14:41Speaker 3: years coach at University of Virginia, coach at James Madison University,
- 14:45Speaker 3: and coached at the University Connecticut. And uh, I think
- 14:48Speaker 3: I have those out of a order, but it doesn't matter.
- 14:50Speaker 3: But when I had a chance to come back, you know,
- 14:52Speaker 3: I started as a tight end coach and recruiting court
- 14:55Speaker 3: and I had to work my way up to where
- 14:57Speaker 3: I was essentially offensive coordinator, calm plays and that kind
- 15:00Speaker 3: of thing. But but but he made sure that didn't want
- 15:04Speaker 3: to put me into something I wasn't ready for.
- 15:06Speaker 2: It.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Wanted me to pay the price is he said, Jay, Look,
- 15:08Speaker 3: it's not to be fair. I've got to pear to
- 15:10Speaker 3: be fair, right, so you know, if anything, he would
- 15:14Speaker 3: And I think one of the other things he felt
- 15:15Speaker 3: he could do was there were times when things he
- 15:19Speaker 3: wanted to get a point across the staff and hey,
- 15:22Speaker 3: I don't want to do you guys doing certain things
- 15:24Speaker 3: or I don't want us to uh, you know, just
- 15:26Speaker 3: different things that he might want to make a point
- 15:28Speaker 3: about how we approach practice, and he'd go after me
- 15:31Speaker 3: because he knew I could deal with it right. And
- 15:34Speaker 3: so the other guys that affe kind of go oh
- 15:35Speaker 3: geez said that the jail, oh, we better get our
- 15:38Speaker 3: stuff together too. So, I mean I understood it, and
- 15:41Speaker 3: at times it didn't always make me happy, but I
- 15:43Speaker 3: got it. And I know that's just like I said,
- 15:45Speaker 3: everything in life nothing. You don't beg anything for nothing,
- 15:48Speaker 3: and then that's what you deal with Jay.
- 15:52Speaker 2: And again, folks, J Paternal joining us here on the
- 15:54Speaker 2: Sports Done Right podcast. My dad and I was selling
- 15:58Speaker 2: you this before we got started. My dad from Pennsylvania,
- 16:01Speaker 2: so half my family, you know, huge penn State fans.
- 16:04Speaker 2: For people out there, you know, penn State obviously is
- 16:08Speaker 2: one of the elite blue blood programs. What does it
- 16:13Speaker 2: mean to the people of Pennsylvania, What does penn state football,
- 16:16Speaker 2: mean to that state, if you could just kind of
- 16:19Speaker 2: share your thoughts on.
- 16:20Speaker 3: That, well, I think over the years and I'm going
- 16:23Speaker 3: back even before Joe, so I mean, this is just
- 16:26Speaker 3: what we've stood for. You know, Pennsylvania was you know,
- 16:30Speaker 3: the team was a collection of guys from the city,
- 16:32Speaker 3: but guys from small towns and mill towns, places like Brownsville,
- 16:37Speaker 3: I mean all those kind of places, Newcastle, all these
- 16:41Speaker 3: all these towns, and so there was a connection. And
- 16:44Speaker 3: when you looked at our uniforms, they were playing uniforms.
- 16:47Speaker 3: You know, when Joe was there, we didn't dance after touchdowns,
- 16:50Speaker 3: we didn't show both everything was blue collar helmuch just
- 16:54Speaker 3: had a blue stripe down the middle with nothing on them.
- 16:56Speaker 3: We don't put stickers on them for for you know,
- 16:59Speaker 3: making a good play went on names. In the back
- 17:01Speaker 3: of our jerseys. It was all and and like I said,
- 17:04Speaker 3: black shoes, so it was very and and people identified
- 17:08Speaker 3: with that. And I think that's the thing that really,
- 17:11Speaker 3: you know, those kind of blue collar values were what
- 17:15Speaker 3: they identified with. Now that's it. When my dad first
- 17:17Speaker 3: got the job, you know, people think, oh, he's always
- 17:22Speaker 3: been Joe Paterna, Well he wasn't necessarily everybody's first choice
- 17:25Speaker 3: to get the job, and so early on it was
- 17:28Speaker 3: who's this Italian from New York, it's going to come
- 17:30Speaker 3: in and these things, and then when he had success,
- 17:33Speaker 3: it was, well, he's only succeeding because the mafia in
- 17:37Speaker 3: New York is paying off officials. Like these were things
- 17:39Speaker 3: that were whispered that got a bugged him because if
- 17:42Speaker 3: he wasn't Italian, they wouldn't be saying some of them.
- 17:46Speaker 3: And it was like, you guys won't to give me
- 17:47Speaker 3: credit for what we're accomplishing the hard way. And you know,
- 17:51Speaker 3: it took time to overcome those things, but he did eventually.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Uh and so you know that's but people identified with
- 17:58Speaker 3: the values of the program had for years and I
- 18:01Speaker 3: think that's really a connection.
- 18:03Speaker 2: You know, you see this in here for the Minnesota
- 18:06Speaker 2: Golden Gophers. I do have to confess. I grew up
- 18:09Speaker 2: rooting for another in the University of Miami Hurricanes, and
- 18:14Speaker 2: I remember the Fiesta Bowl, man where my team got
- 18:18Speaker 2: off that plane and those fatigues, and you know, hey,
- 18:23Speaker 2: I love Miami, but there was just something I just
- 18:26Speaker 2: I don't know. I thought they just went a step
- 18:28Speaker 2: too far with that. And sure, enough. You know, Penn
- 18:31Speaker 2: State came out to handle business and and won that game.
- 18:34Speaker 2: But I have just always respected Penn State for everything
- 18:39Speaker 2: you just kind of said, just keeping it simple with
- 18:41Speaker 2: the uniforms, the work ethic, and again that's what I've
- 18:45Speaker 2: heard growing up too. You know, even though from western
- 18:48Speaker 2: Pennsylvania there was some love for Pittsburgh and you know,
- 18:51Speaker 2: late seventies Tony dor Set and you know that kind
- 18:54Speaker 2: of the little run they had there. But you know,
- 18:56Speaker 2: obviously it's a it's a Penn State state, you know,
- 19:01Speaker 2: and that's what everybody just talks about. No names on
- 19:04Speaker 2: the uniforms, just the basic you know, like you said,
- 19:06Speaker 2: black shoes, nothing fancy. And you know when you have
- 19:10Speaker 2: a blue collar state like that, I think you really
- 19:13Speaker 2: hit on and on why that state supports that school
- 19:15Speaker 2: the way they do.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I think o Higo States similar that way. I
- 19:19Speaker 3: mean there are some schools that are that way as well.
- 19:22Speaker 3: But no, you hit the down on the head, and
- 19:24Speaker 3: you know, you go back to that Miami game. You know,
- 19:27Speaker 3: it was Joe said to us, look, I'm going to
- 19:29Speaker 3: talk about this team about Miami is so that the
- 19:31Speaker 3: greatest team that ever put on that laced up plates
- 19:35Speaker 3: and I'm just gonna keep telling abou great and make
- 19:37Speaker 3: everybody think we don't have a chance, and then when
- 19:39Speaker 3: the game comes, we're gonna see if we get out
- 19:40Speaker 3: tough on And that's what happened. And that's and I
- 19:43Speaker 3: think that moment to this day, that's the highest rate
- 19:46Speaker 3: of college football game in history. To this day, it
- 19:50Speaker 3: got a twenty five twenty five O rating. The next
- 19:53Speaker 3: highest rating is twenty one seven. That was USC Texas.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Uh with running that, but there's never been then close.
- 20:01Speaker 3: So I mean it was to this and like you said,
- 20:03Speaker 3: it was, it was moved from January first to the second.
- 20:07Speaker 3: It was a standalone game. It was a Friday night
- 20:10Speaker 3: and everybody had literally taken off that whole weekend. So
- 20:13Speaker 3: all these people are like, let's watch the game. And
- 20:15Speaker 3: I think one of the things college football in this
- 20:17Speaker 3: championship era has not been able to catch is that
- 20:21Speaker 3: that day, the right day where people will have like
- 20:24Speaker 3: Super Bowl parties, like it's on a Monday workday. Well
- 20:27Speaker 3: guess what, right, I'm coming home and the game kicks
- 20:31Speaker 3: off at eight thirty nine o'clock and I'm not. I
- 20:33Speaker 3: don't want a house now my team's in it different story, sure,
- 20:37Speaker 3: But if it's you know, if it's if it's Alabama
- 20:40Speaker 3: and Texas, you know, yeah, I'm gonna watch it because
- 20:42Speaker 3: I you know, want to see you wins NAT Championship.
- 20:45Speaker 3: But I'm not excited. I'm not have much people over right,
- 20:48Speaker 3: going back to Monday night and I got stuff to
- 20:50Speaker 3: do Monday. It's Tuesday. So they never really captured that again.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Yeah, no, Greade point, Jay, great point. All right, Well
- 20:57Speaker 2: let's keep this move in here. Let's talk about the
- 21:00Speaker 2: big game this weekend before we get into your book
- 21:03Speaker 2: here is I really want to get into the inn
- 21:05Speaker 2: il discussion. But Oregon's coming out wide out one of
- 21:10Speaker 2: the argument. I think it's probably the best setup in
- 21:13Speaker 2: college football. I mean, you know, one hundred and seven
- 21:16Speaker 2: thousand whatever it is, and you know, down at Beaver
- 21:18Speaker 2: Stadium there in white, incredible setup. However, University of Oregon
- 21:25Speaker 2: obviously nobody the slouch at They're coming in, and you know, realistically,
- 21:30Speaker 2: I think it's kind of I see why Penn State's
- 21:33Speaker 2: the favorite. They're at home. But you know, if this
- 21:35Speaker 2: was like a neutral site game, maybe Oregon's you know,
- 21:38Speaker 2: the favorite by a couple of points. But Jay give
- 21:41Speaker 2: me your earlier well not so much early thoughts. Here
- 21:44Speaker 2: is the games a couple of days away, but you know,
- 21:47Speaker 2: what are you thinking? And you know, talk a little
- 21:50Speaker 2: bit too about the Penn State offense. You know there's
- 21:53Speaker 2: been questions about the quarterback, things like that Oregon phenomenal defense.
- 22:00Speaker 2: So let's just start there with your thoughts. Starting with
- 22:02Speaker 2: Penn State offense.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Well, you know, in the all off season, you know,
- 22:07Speaker 3: they kept the quarterback, they kept both running backs, and
- 22:10Speaker 3: they talked about how great the offensive line was. They
- 22:13Speaker 3: needed whiteouts. They got three white outs of the transfer portal.
- 22:15Speaker 3: So there was this expectation going into the game the
- 22:19Speaker 3: season that this was going to be one of these
- 22:21Speaker 3: offenses just blew everybody away, right, And the schedule has
- 22:26Speaker 3: not been heavy. I mean it was Nevada, who's one
- 22:28Speaker 3: and three, You got FIUs two and two, just lost
- 22:31Speaker 3: to Delaware. By twenty two, you got Villanova just lost
- 22:34Speaker 3: the Monmouth and so you didn't really play and then
- 22:38Speaker 3: yet off week. So our fan base is kind of bored.
- 22:43Speaker 3: You know, they wanted to talk about Oregon all summer
- 22:45Speaker 3: and so like, don't talk about them. We got you know,
- 22:47Speaker 3: and then and then they expected the offense to look
- 22:50Speaker 3: a lot better. But at the end of the day,
- 22:51Speaker 3: you're going into the fourth quarter and your starters are
- 22:53Speaker 3: still in the game because it's twenty to nothing against
- 22:57Speaker 3: fiu So and FIUs driving to maybe make it twenty seven,
- 23:00Speaker 3: so they're not out. We score twenty one points against
- 23:03Speaker 3: Villanova to get it to fifty two in the fourth quarter.
- 23:06Speaker 3: So we haven't looked really, really sharp, and the quarterback
- 23:10Speaker 3: hasn't looked really sharp, has not been real successful on
- 23:13Speaker 3: third downs. We've struggled on third downs, the red zone
- 23:16Speaker 3: has been settled for a lot of field goals. And
- 23:19Speaker 3: the other thing is the offense has been helped by
- 23:21Speaker 3: our average starting field position has been our own forty
- 23:23Speaker 3: two yard line, which is incredible across three games. But
- 23:27Speaker 3: we're not cashing it into a lot of points early on,
- 23:29Speaker 3: so we don't start fast. So I think it's gonna
- 23:31Speaker 3: be important. Oregon, they are at offense a defense. It's
- 23:36Speaker 3: very much like the NFL teams where they're down guys
- 23:40Speaker 3: are trying to take up two blockers and let the
- 23:42Speaker 3: linebackers run downhill make tackles. I think they're really talented
- 23:45Speaker 3: on the outside. We're Gon, We're gonna have to find
- 23:47Speaker 3: that early on if our wideouts can beat their corners,
- 23:50Speaker 3: because that change is the tenor of the game. We
- 23:53Speaker 3: haven't gotten the kind of big plays that we thought.
- 23:55Speaker 3: The starters through three games have eight plays of twenty
- 23:57Speaker 3: yards or more, so there is uncertainty, There is a
- 24:01Speaker 3: little bit of hesitancy on the fan base, and I
- 24:04Speaker 3: think it's important to get Drew Aller started early and
- 24:08Speaker 3: get him some confidence. Run the ball effectively early if
- 24:11Speaker 3: we can, so that we can run clock and keep
- 24:14Speaker 3: This is one of those ones you got that Joe
- 24:16Speaker 3: would have come in and told me we'd beat a
- 24:18Speaker 3: higher state No. Five in the game, much like this
- 24:20Speaker 3: big white out game. And Joe came in and said, look,
- 24:23Speaker 3: we're going to control the temple of the game. Well,
- 24:24Speaker 3: control the clock, and if our field goal kicker, our
- 24:27Speaker 3: punter comes on the field at the end of every
- 24:29Speaker 3: one of one of our possessions will win the game.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Don't turn the ball over and control the temple at
- 24:34Speaker 3: the end. We won the game seventeen to ten, and
- 24:36Speaker 3: we've been scoring thirty something points a game up until then,
- 24:39Speaker 3: so that may be what it takes to do this,
- 24:41Speaker 3: because the longer we're on the field. The more the
- 24:44Speaker 3: Oregon offense is sitting over there at all that speed,
- 24:47Speaker 3: they have absolutely just watching the game. Yep, No, I
- 24:51Speaker 3: that might be the approach, and it's.
- 24:53Speaker 2: You know, it's kind of what I've been here, and
- 24:55Speaker 2: I've been spending a lot of time here the past
- 24:57Speaker 2: a couple of days since we knew you were coming on,
- 25:00Speaker 2: watching not only your show as well, nick Ny Game Week,
- 25:06Speaker 2: but also a lot of Penn State and Oregon podcast
- 25:09Speaker 2: and they all really have said just exactly what you said,
- 25:12Speaker 2: because it's all about you know, time of possession, you know,
- 25:15Speaker 2: Penn State, grinding that clock, keeping that Oregon offense, like
- 25:19Speaker 2: you said, off of the field, keeping them on the sidelines,
- 25:23Speaker 2: and then wearing down you know, that gives you the
- 25:26Speaker 2: chance to wear down that very good Oregon defense all
- 25:29Speaker 2: of a sudden, they're getting tired, they're feeling the effects
- 25:31Speaker 2: of this wide out effect, so to speak, and getting
- 25:35Speaker 2: a little confused out there as well. Talk about Drew
- 25:39Speaker 2: Allar because you kind of hit on him a little
- 25:42Speaker 2: bit here, but kind of the question mark there now
- 25:45Speaker 2: again having played top tier talent and as my daughter
- 25:50Speaker 2: is a senior at the university and no Nevada. No
- 25:52Speaker 2: disrespect for their honey, but you know, talk about your
- 25:56Speaker 2: quarterback there, and what are you looking for from him
- 26:00Speaker 2: this Saturday?
- 26:02Speaker 3: You know. The thing about is that I watched body
- 26:05Speaker 3: language a lot, and you know I wanted I ran
- 26:09Speaker 3: them in February and I said, hey, Drew, you know
- 26:12Speaker 3: I don't want to tell I'm not trying to coach anything,
- 26:14Speaker 3: but you know what, the one thing I want to
- 26:16Speaker 3: see you do, I'd love I hope you will remember
- 26:19Speaker 3: with all these pressures and all these people saying you
- 26:22Speaker 3: should be doing it, I hope you remember when you
- 26:24Speaker 3: step on the field, it's a game, and I hope
- 26:26Speaker 3: you remember it's supposed to be fun. And you know,
- 26:29Speaker 3: I think that's the one thing I want to see
- 26:30Speaker 3: him Saturday night come out of that because at times
- 26:32Speaker 3: it doesn't look like he's having a lot of fun.
- 26:34Speaker 3: And these guys have tremendous pressure on them compared to
- 26:38Speaker 3: twenty years ago, because you got, you know, people talking
- 26:41Speaker 3: about your top ten pick or your top so now
- 26:44Speaker 3: I got to perform at this level or if you
- 26:46Speaker 3: don't do instead of just saying, you know, I'm gonna
- 26:48Speaker 3: go out and take what the defense gives me, and
- 26:51Speaker 3: I'm gonna go on the next play and I'm gonna laugh,
- 26:53Speaker 3: and if I make a mistake, I'm gonna, you know,
- 26:55Speaker 3: all correct it. But I'm gonna go out and have
- 26:57Speaker 3: some fun. And I think you're seeing the teams that
- 27:00Speaker 3: you see that are successful right now. You see guys
- 27:04Speaker 3: that look like they're having fun, not necessarily to celebrate
- 27:06Speaker 3: in the ends and anything like that, but you know,
- 27:08Speaker 3: you got you know, I can still see JJ McCarthy
- 27:11Speaker 3: and Michigan smiling between plays. You know, the kids from
- 27:14Speaker 3: Ohio State last year, you know, coming in the huddle
- 27:17Speaker 3: with a big smile on his face. And guys I
- 27:19Speaker 3: coached at quarterback that were really good. They you know,
- 27:22Speaker 3: they they like practice, they look, but come game day
- 27:25Speaker 3: it was like a whole other level. They were focused,
- 27:28Speaker 3: but they were gonna enjoy every every second of it.
- 27:31Speaker 3: And I want to see Drew do that on Saturday night.
- 27:33Speaker 3: And I think, I think if he can play free
- 27:35Speaker 3: like that and enjoy the game rather than try and
- 27:39Speaker 3: be perfect, because no one's perfect and you're not always
- 27:43Speaker 3: gonna get everybody to like you. So you know, if
- 27:46Speaker 3: if ten people doing the same and so what hell
- 27:48Speaker 3: with them?
- 27:49Speaker 2: There you go there you go. All right, let me
- 27:52Speaker 2: ask you here about the running game. You know, you
- 27:56Speaker 2: got Alan, you got Singleton back, there are are we're
- 28:00Speaker 2: gonna get a You know, we're so used to these
- 28:02Speaker 2: Penn State running backs over the course of history. Obviously,
- 28:06Speaker 2: are do either of these guys kind of have Are
- 28:09Speaker 2: they the next one up? I don't want to say, hey,
- 28:11Speaker 2: is one of these guys the next Sakwan Barkley or
- 28:13Speaker 2: something like that, but you know what I'm saying, Yeah,
- 28:15Speaker 2: none of that next name back coming out of PSU.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Well, I don't think it's ever. I mean, look, I've
- 28:20Speaker 3: watched a lot of football. I mean, say, Kwan is
- 28:23Speaker 3: just a whole nother Somebody I said, did you see
- 28:27Speaker 3: him hurdle the guy backwards and go, yeah, have you
- 28:29Speaker 3: ever seen that before? I said no, never, never, never
- 28:32Speaker 3: seen a great guy. But look, I think Singleton and
- 28:35Speaker 3: Allen are really good backs. I don't. I think part
- 28:38Speaker 3: of you know, they've been flowed down at times the
- 28:41Speaker 3: last couple of years, and part of it is they've
- 28:44Speaker 3: got to establish something on the outside to get people
- 28:46Speaker 3: off the run game. Last year they had Tyler Warren.
- 28:49Speaker 3: Tyler Warren. You know, people will say, well, the guy
- 28:51Speaker 3: they got this year might be I said, there's not
- 28:53Speaker 3: You're not gonna see Tyler Warren for a while. Tyler,
- 28:56Speaker 3: and look what he's doing the NFL already. That kid
- 28:58Speaker 3: was an incredible talent and you had to pay attention
- 29:00Speaker 3: to every play which opened up the run game. Because
- 29:03Speaker 3: we didn't have great Whiteouts last year. You don't have
- 29:06Speaker 3: that guy now. So the Whiteouts really have to step up.
- 29:08Speaker 3: They've got to beat Oregon one on one the outside
- 29:10Speaker 3: early in that game and get those safeties back and
- 29:13Speaker 3: let these guys open up some run game up front.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Because the one thing Oregon, they themselves will tell you
- 29:18Speaker 3: is they're sure not sure how good they are against
- 29:21Speaker 3: the run, but they've gotten ahead of everybody early on
- 29:24Speaker 3: the games, right, so it hasn't matter. They forced people
- 29:26Speaker 3: to really kind of get away from the run game early.
- 29:30Speaker 3: So I think that's something to watch early on.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Talk about Oregon's offense. You know, we we've talked about
- 29:37Speaker 2: it here, trying to keep them off the field, but
- 29:39Speaker 2: let's you know, let's.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Let's spend it on at some point.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Right they're coming on at some point, uh, you know,
- 29:45Speaker 2: speak about them and and just really that quick strike
- 29:49Speaker 2: potential that they always seem to have out there. And
- 29:53Speaker 2: you know, again, as kind of your football mind, you know,
- 29:56Speaker 2: what do you see from the Ducks offense?
- 30:00Speaker 3: Well, I spend a lot of time with defensive coordinators
- 30:02Speaker 3: because there's an offensive coach. I just always tried to
- 30:05Speaker 3: learn from them and understand what they're looking at. And
- 30:08Speaker 3: I think what most guys do now in this day
- 30:10Speaker 3: and age, they look they say, okay, let's turn on
- 30:12Speaker 3: the film. Can let's start with the quarterback, most of
- 30:15Speaker 3: this important position on the field. Can he throw and
- 30:19Speaker 3: can he run? The organ kid can do both? Can
- 30:22Speaker 3: he handle pressure? Well, they've only been sacked one time,
- 30:25Speaker 3: So let's let's find a way now Now that you've
- 30:29Speaker 3: established he can run and throw. Now that takes away
- 30:32Speaker 3: certain things you want to do defensively, let's go. Then
- 30:35Speaker 3: you go to the outside. Can their best white outs
- 30:38Speaker 3: beat our best corners one on one over the top,
- 30:41Speaker 3: not on a crossing right? But can they just go
- 30:43Speaker 3: and get a forty yard bomb on us or a
- 30:45Speaker 3: back shoulder throw for twenty five thirty yards? Because if
- 30:47Speaker 3: they can, now we've got to help them because we
- 30:49Speaker 3: can't let them do that. Then you start to go okay,
- 30:54Speaker 3: tight end in the past game, what's that like? Oregon's
- 30:57Speaker 3: got great whiteouts, they got a quarterback and run through,
- 31:00Speaker 3: they got a tight end is a real threat. And
- 31:03Speaker 3: then you say, okay, the run game is legit and
- 31:06Speaker 3: their offensive line is legit. So they create a lot
- 31:08Speaker 3: of problems. So now that means every play is a
- 31:11Speaker 3: chess match. Do I dare play some man demand on
- 31:14Speaker 3: first down and run some run blitzes and they may
- 31:16Speaker 3: pass the ball and now I'm one on one outside.
- 31:18Speaker 3: So it puts a lot of pressure within each play,
- 31:21Speaker 3: not just within each series, as to how you go
- 31:24Speaker 3: with the back and forth. And I want to try
- 31:26Speaker 3: and get one. I want to try and get ahead
- 31:28Speaker 3: of you one call that I know you're gonna be
- 31:30Speaker 3: throwing the ball first down, I'm gonna run a certain
- 31:32Speaker 3: type of coverage, or I know you're gonna be running
- 31:35Speaker 3: the ball on first down and I'm gonna run his
- 31:36Speaker 3: own run blitz that's gonna stuff the run and get
- 31:40Speaker 3: you in the second along. So it's really gonna be
- 31:42Speaker 3: fun to watch that give and take between the two coordinators.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Absolutely, let me ask you this, James Franklin as a
- 31:50Speaker 2: head coach, you know obviously he's he's gotten some grief
- 31:53Speaker 2: at times for these big games and not winning all
- 31:57Speaker 2: of them. But before we get into your book here,
- 32:01Speaker 2: just give me your thoughts on coach Franklin kind of
- 32:04Speaker 2: his tenure at Penn State, and you know why this
- 32:08Speaker 2: year is really important for him to kind of get
- 32:10Speaker 2: over that hump.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Well, look at the end of the day. You know,
- 32:15Speaker 3: my dad gave me advice one time when I was coaching.
- 32:18Speaker 3: He said, look, you want everybody to like you. It's
- 32:21Speaker 3: never an analyst. Okay, he goes. You know, Jay, we
- 32:25Speaker 3: were raised Catholic. We believe Jesus was the son of God.
- 32:29Speaker 3: He had twelve apostles, he lost one of them, one
- 32:32Speaker 3: of them turned on him. He said, now he's the
- 32:34Speaker 3: son of God. You want everybody to like you? Who
- 32:35Speaker 3: the hell do you think you are? Right? Well, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 3: in all fairness, Dad, mom is you know I'm the
- 32:43Speaker 3: son of Mom? So she you know, he's very godlike.
- 32:46Speaker 3: So Dad, don't think it's only but anyway. But the
- 32:50Speaker 3: point is is, no matter how many games you win,
- 32:52Speaker 3: somebody's going to find something to complain about it. So
- 32:55Speaker 3: I think the sooner you realize that and you get
- 32:57Speaker 3: beyond it. He's won, He's won the games he's supposed
- 32:59Speaker 3: to to. He's lost some games that maybe he should
- 33:03Speaker 3: have won against big teams, no question about it. But
- 33:05Speaker 3: you know, if you're playing great teams, they got great
- 33:08Speaker 3: people and you got great coaches, and they're gonna you know,
- 33:11Speaker 3: but you like, you know, as he said, there's only
- 33:13Speaker 3: one way to correct that, and that shut people up
- 33:15Speaker 3: and win those games. So that's gonna be the pressure
- 33:17Speaker 3: on them this weekend. And I think that's gonna be
- 33:21Speaker 3: you know, that's what everybody's waiting for, is that big game. Now,
- 33:25Speaker 3: if he wins this one, they go to Hio State
- 33:27Speaker 3: in a couple of weeks and they'll say, well he's
- 33:29Speaker 3: five and you know, twelve against fuck do so. But
- 33:33Speaker 3: you know, so you never you're never gonna make everybody happy,
- 33:36Speaker 3: and so soon you realize that. So I think the
- 33:38Speaker 3: most important thing is for any and I would say,
- 33:41Speaker 3: Stanny coach, you know, you have a foundation, what you
- 33:44Speaker 3: believe in, you know it works, stick to it and
- 33:47Speaker 3: get after it and and you know, and compete as
- 33:50Speaker 3: well as can. But you know, in the big games,
- 33:53Speaker 3: it does come down to it at some point in
- 33:55Speaker 3: the game where the head coach makes a decision, has
- 33:58Speaker 3: to make a decision to go for it on fourth
- 34:00Speaker 3: down or not go for it. You know, in nineteen ninety,
- 34:03Speaker 3: we were out to Notre Dame. Notre Dame's number one.
- 34:05Speaker 3: The game's tied and there was no overtime back then,
- 34:08Speaker 3: and we had about a fourth and five around midfield
- 34:11Speaker 3: with about a minut and a half two minutes to go,
- 34:13Speaker 3: and Notre Dame was number one in the country. They
- 34:14Speaker 3: had one loss because everybody was beating everybody that year.
- 34:19Speaker 3: And it was fourth and four round midfield and we
- 34:21Speaker 3: had come back from down twenty one to seven to
- 34:23Speaker 3: tie it, and everybody's saying, Joey, you got to go
- 34:26Speaker 3: for He goes, No, We're gonna put him down there.
- 34:28Speaker 3: And no, no, no, no, you play for Tigers. No no, no,
- 34:31Speaker 3: he goes. Lou Holtz can't play for a tie. If
- 34:34Speaker 3: he ties us, he falls out of number one. Oh,
- 34:37Speaker 3: he said, rick Meyer is going to throw us the
- 34:39Speaker 3: ball three or four players. Rick Meyer throws a pick,
- 34:42Speaker 3: We get the ball, kick the game winning field, go
- 34:44Speaker 3: win the game. And that's that's what sometimes you got
- 34:48Speaker 3: to have that, you know, put yourself in the other
- 34:51Speaker 3: guy's shoes, and I think and I think that's you know,
- 34:54Speaker 3: that's the difference between the guys that win a lot
- 34:56Speaker 3: of those games or don't win a lot those games.
- 34:58Speaker 3: And I think James has won a lot of games.
- 35:00Speaker 3: But I think this year is important because they've been
- 35:03Speaker 3: pointing to this year and it has been you know,
- 35:05Speaker 3: we've got Singleton back, We've got Allen back, they got
- 35:07Speaker 3: offensive line back, we got a quarterback back. We kept
- 35:09Speaker 3: a bunch of gots some guys on defense here, so
- 35:12Speaker 3: and we put a lot of money into it with
- 35:14Speaker 3: then il and we did a lot of these things
- 35:15Speaker 3: that we're supposed to do to get it. And we're
- 35:17Speaker 3: a veteran team. We got more starters back, and we're
- 35:20Speaker 3: in the semi finals last year, and so there's been
- 35:23Speaker 3: a lot of time about the National Championship. Now on
- 35:25Speaker 3: the flip side, you know, there were two or three
- 35:28Speaker 3: games last year that without Tyler Warren we probably lose.
- 35:31Speaker 3: And we you know, we're that closed to be an
- 35:33Speaker 3: eight and fourteen last year, and you know, it's a
- 35:35Speaker 3: pessimistic way to look at it. But I go back
- 35:37Speaker 3: to Tom Coughlin. They won the Super Bowl with Eli
- 35:40Speaker 3: Manning and the next year, they said, well, people are
- 35:42Speaker 3: picking you as a favorite. He goes, well, we won
- 35:44Speaker 3: the division within nine and seven record last year. He
- 35:47Speaker 3: got hot, he said, we were nine to seven football
- 35:49Speaker 3: team last year. That's not good enough. Why would we
- 35:51Speaker 3: be a favorite? So, I mean, that's it's all how
- 35:54Speaker 3: you look at it. But I think there's been so
- 35:56Speaker 3: much talk about winning all this year that the fans
- 35:58Speaker 3: are uneasy. So if they so, there is pressures go
- 36:02Speaker 3: out and win these games?
- 36:03Speaker 2: All right? And real quick, what what's the prediction you
- 36:06Speaker 2: got to score for me on Saturday?
- 36:08Speaker 3: I never make predictions there. Well, we know who you're
- 36:12Speaker 3: rooting for a fan, I think Penn State's gonna win.
- 36:16Speaker 3: As an analysts, uh, it's this is a tough one. Yeah,
- 36:20Speaker 3: it really tough football game, and I'm hoping Penn State
- 36:22Speaker 3: pulls it out.
- 36:23Speaker 2: There you go, all right, let's get to your book here, Jay,
- 36:26Speaker 2: and again folks, j Paternal joining us for a few
- 36:29Speaker 2: more moments here blitz the all out pressure of college
- 36:33Speaker 2: football's new era. And boy, is this book right on time.
- 36:38Speaker 2: I am so glad you're on the show because I'm
- 36:41Speaker 2: I was really starting to try and reach out to
- 36:43Speaker 2: people that really know n I l I. You know,
- 36:47Speaker 2: we hear name, image and likeness. We've heard the Ed
- 36:50Speaker 2: O'Banion story, which kind of started this whole thing, and
- 36:55Speaker 2: but now we're in just all out paying players transfer ortals.
- 37:00Speaker 2: You can leave literally anytime you want to Jay, what
- 37:05Speaker 2: the hell's going on in college football all days?
- 37:08Speaker 3: Man, it's a complete lack of leadership. No one's in charge,
- 37:12Speaker 3: no one wants to take charge because every time they
- 37:15Speaker 3: take a stand, they lose in court. And even though
- 37:18Speaker 3: we've gotten the point now, you know nil was supposed
- 37:20Speaker 3: to be. There was a guy in in uh I
- 37:23Speaker 3: played at Colorado years ago named Jeremy Blue. Jeremy Bloom
- 37:27Speaker 3: was a great pump returner wide out probably not it
- 37:30Speaker 3: wasn't going to be an NFL guy, but was a
- 37:33Speaker 3: world champion, world class mogul skier and Olympics type guy
- 37:38Speaker 3: won medals, but could not take any endorsement, money or
- 37:41Speaker 3: any gear to compete with because it would jeopardize as football.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Oh so this is really like the kind of stuff
- 37:50Speaker 3: with it. So if a ski company wanted to give
- 37:53Speaker 3: him stuff or put him on a poster, which they
- 37:56Speaker 3: couldn't do it. But but Ed O'Bannon was the guy
- 37:59Speaker 3: that law suit. And so what I was supposed to
- 38:02Speaker 3: be is, okay, well, you know Gatorade thinks, you know,
- 38:08Speaker 3: Gatorade thinks that you know, Drew al Are is going
- 38:11Speaker 3: to give them a return on their investment. They put
- 38:13Speaker 3: them in a commercial, so they're willing to give them
- 38:15Speaker 3: a check to be in their commercial. Okay, that's an IL.
- 38:18Speaker 3: But that's not what it became. It became setting up collectives.
- 38:21Speaker 3: And I was one of the guys that started the
- 38:22Speaker 3: first collective at Penn State, and we wanted it to
- 38:26Speaker 3: be legitimate. Nil. Not this, okay, we're going to give you.
- 38:31Speaker 3: We're going to create something for you to do and
- 38:34Speaker 3: claim it's ANIL and it's pay for play. And so
- 38:37Speaker 3: people in the industry called that synthetic. Nil, it's not
- 38:40Speaker 3: really ANIL. Let's pay to play. So now you get
- 38:43Speaker 3: into this settlement that occurred, and now it's revenue sharing.
- 38:47Speaker 3: So now I can give we can dole out twenty
- 38:51Speaker 3: point five million dollars to all of our teams for
- 38:55Speaker 3: most schools, it's sixteen and a half roughly going to
- 38:58Speaker 3: football times one hundred five guys, you'll get tell your
- 39:01Speaker 3: neighborhood of one hundred and forty seven grand on average
- 39:04Speaker 3: if you give everybody equal, which isn't happening. Some people
- 39:06Speaker 3: are getting a lot more money. Sure. And then you
- 39:09Speaker 3: also have, up until July one, you still have the
- 39:11Speaker 3: ability to give me synthetic nil deals which aren't real.
- 39:15Speaker 3: So this is like the last year of that kind
- 39:18Speaker 3: of crazy, out of control and il stuff. From now on,
- 39:23Speaker 3: it's going to have to be submitted. You're gonna have
- 39:25Speaker 3: to say, Okay, Gatorad's gonna pay me fifty grand to
- 39:28Speaker 3: make some appearances, and they'll say that's fair market value.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Someone will say it is or you know where you
- 39:33Speaker 3: had guys getting paid sixty five thousand dollars to tweet
- 39:37Speaker 3: twice a month and they were claiming it two hours
- 39:40Speaker 3: a month. Well even at fifty thousand a year for
- 39:43Speaker 3: two hours a month, that's twenty two hundred roughly an hour.
- 39:48Speaker 3: And I would say to guys in the NFL, and
- 39:51Speaker 3: I'll collect them, says, you better tell these guys if
- 39:52Speaker 3: they don't make the NFL, they've been at a law
- 39:54Speaker 3: school in med school to make that kind of money
- 39:57Speaker 3: per hour, and they won't make that for a long time.
- 40:00Speaker 3: So you know, they better not complain about this, so
- 40:02Speaker 3: it turned into something it wasn't supposed to be. And
- 40:05Speaker 3: it's just been a constant attempt to try and get
- 40:07Speaker 3: get the horse back in the barn the barn. They're
- 40:10Speaker 3: never gonna do it. Yeah, and we need to be
- 40:13Speaker 3: realistic about what we are. The Big ten is getting
- 40:16Speaker 3: one point one billion dollars here in in in media.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Wow. If Penn State were playing Minnesota on Saturday, well
- 40:25Speaker 3: we'll just use Penn State in organ on Saturday. Right
- 40:28Speaker 3: before the game, the players walk off the field and say,
- 40:30Speaker 3: we're not playing unless you do X, Y and Z
- 40:32Speaker 3: for us. You're gonna switch the channel over to Alabama
- 40:36Speaker 3: Georgia rather than watch James Franklin and Dan Lanning play
- 40:38Speaker 3: Tilly Wings or playing Cornwall. That's you know, no one's
- 40:43Speaker 3: gonna no one's gonna watch that. So that's the reality
- 40:48Speaker 3: of what's going on. So we have to be realistic
- 40:52Speaker 3: about what we are. And I think, you know, I'm
- 40:55Speaker 3: an old school guy. I don't necessarily like it, but
- 40:57Speaker 3: I'm also realistic about what we.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Are, right, you know exactly. And that's the thing because
- 41:04Speaker 2: you know, as I was thinking about it, name, image
- 41:06Speaker 2: and likeness nil one thing. But now since, as you say,
- 41:10Speaker 2: the horses out the barn and n it's yeah, it's
- 41:11Speaker 2: definitely not going back. So you know, Jay, what is
- 41:15Speaker 2: the future looking like here in terms of all these payments?
- 41:21Speaker 2: Do you, in your opinion, do you think maybe at
- 41:23Speaker 2: the very least we can reign in the transfer portal
- 41:26Speaker 2: portion of this where guys aren't jumping around every year
- 41:30Speaker 2: because you know, you know, University of Minnesota here, we
- 41:33Speaker 2: lost one of our best basketball players a couple of
- 41:35Speaker 2: years ago to Ohio State simply because you know, he
- 41:39Speaker 2: made more money and he was able to leave.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Ixently question, I mean, this is far from settled. I mean,
- 41:46Speaker 3: if I am, if my son was the best running
- 41:49Speaker 3: back in the country as a sophomore in high school
- 41:51Speaker 3: right now, I would already be in court saying they've
- 41:54Speaker 3: imposed this essentially artificial salary cap on revenue sharing. Right,
- 42:00Speaker 3: my son wasn't party to that litigation, so he shouldn't
- 42:03Speaker 3: fall under it. And I'm going to sue the NCAA
- 42:05Speaker 3: for anti trust violations and these schools for not allowing
- 42:09Speaker 3: my son to make as much money as he wants.
- 42:12Speaker 3: There's a basketball player I think down in it might
- 42:15Speaker 3: be a Vanderbilt who is now suing the NCAA and saying,
- 42:19Speaker 3: I'm making this much money playing college basketball. If I
- 42:22Speaker 3: go overseas, I'm not good enough for the NBA. If
- 42:25Speaker 3: I go overseas, I'll make one third of that or
- 42:27Speaker 3: half of that. Who are you to tell me I
- 42:30Speaker 3: can't stay here with this artificial time limit. So I
- 42:33Speaker 3: think these things are all coming. And this is so
- 42:37Speaker 3: I think, where does this have to end up. It's
- 42:39Speaker 3: going to end up with collective bargaining, which will then
- 42:41Speaker 3: settle down the transfer portal, which will then get may
- 42:45Speaker 3: formalize all this. And I think you know, when you
- 42:49Speaker 3: talk to athletic directors off the record or privately, they'll say, well,
- 42:53Speaker 3: let's get collective bargaining and let's get it done. I said, well,
- 42:55Speaker 3: you guys got to say that public. Oh I'm not
- 42:57Speaker 3: going to say that public. I don't blame him, because
- 42:59Speaker 3: for one that says it is going to hear from
- 43:01Speaker 3: their president right and their board board of trustees say
- 43:05Speaker 3: what are you doing? You know you're putting this. But
- 43:07Speaker 3: we'll all be much better off when that moment comes,
- 43:11Speaker 3: because now it'll settle down. And now because look, schools
- 43:15Speaker 3: have deals with Nike adivas whatever it may be. Right,
- 43:19Speaker 3: if my son wants to go to a school that's
- 43:22Speaker 3: in Adida school and in Pennsylvania, you can have an
- 43:26Speaker 3: IL deal in high school, he might have signed a
- 43:28Speaker 3: five year deal with Nike, right, and he goes to
- 43:31Speaker 3: a school that's in Dida School and says, well, I
- 43:33Speaker 3: want to wear Nike. You can't make me. Oh, well
- 43:35Speaker 3: you have to A I'm going to go to another school,
- 43:38Speaker 3: or B I'm gonna Steven Court. Wow, I mean and
- 43:41Speaker 3: so being until they get this all settled, until they
- 43:44Speaker 3: get this whole ironed out and reorganize everything. They really
- 43:48Speaker 3: need a constitutional connection to rewrite all the rules and
- 43:52Speaker 3: just be and have the players in the room. The
- 43:55Speaker 3: one thing about all these things is the players have
- 43:57Speaker 3: not been represented. You know, they talk about into a
- 44:00Speaker 3: twelve team playoffs. The players didn't weigh in on that.
- 44:02Speaker 3: Now let's go to sixteen teams. Players aren't you know,
- 44:05Speaker 3: maybe players don't want to play four more games, right? Okay?
- 44:08Speaker 3: And you know the Big ten is talking about twenty
- 44:10Speaker 3: four twenty eight, but five or six more football games.
- 44:13Speaker 3: First of all, there aren't twenty four to twenty eight
- 44:15Speaker 3: teams and gollge football that deserve it, right, Yeah, let's
- 44:18Speaker 3: just be honest about it. You don't have any good teams,
- 44:21Speaker 3: you know. I mean even last year when you look,
- 44:23Speaker 3: there were some blowouts in that first round. You know,
- 44:25Speaker 3: sm you came here, it was eighteen degrees and right yea,
- 44:29Speaker 3: you know they threw two picks six early in the
- 44:31Speaker 3: game and it was over. You know, yep, So in
- 44:34Speaker 3: Tennessee went up to the higher state and to handle it. So,
- 44:37Speaker 3: I mean, you know, that's you know, that's just the
- 44:39Speaker 3: way it is. So, you know, I think there's we're
- 44:42Speaker 3: a long way from this whole thing being settled to
- 44:44Speaker 3: where everybody can kind of say, okay, I feel like
- 44:46Speaker 3: there's stone beneath our brown rather than shifting sand.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Jay, let me ask you here and again, I thank
- 44:52Speaker 2: you for your time here. I don't want to keep
- 44:53Speaker 2: you too much longer because I know you're very, very busy.
- 44:56Speaker 2: But you know, going forward in you know, I read
- 45:00Speaker 2: a couple of excerpts from your book there if you
- 45:04Speaker 2: were the college football commissioner, let's say, and because your book,
- 45:10Speaker 2: and I'm glad I got it because you know, I'm
- 45:13Speaker 2: going to be doing a lot of reading next week
- 45:15Speaker 2: going through this thing. But what would you do, Jay,
- 45:19Speaker 2: what would you do maybe the next couple of steps here.
- 45:23Speaker 2: I'm not asking you, obviously to cure all this stuff,
- 45:26Speaker 2: but maybe you know what, in the next year or two,
- 45:29Speaker 2: where would you like to see nil pay for play
- 45:33Speaker 2: all this stuff progressing too.
- 45:37Speaker 3: I think first and foremost, you got to get you
- 45:39Speaker 3: got to get everybody in the room. And in terms
- 45:42Speaker 3: of the president, and I think really you need trustees involved.
- 45:45Speaker 3: And I say that as a trustee because presidents are
- 45:48Speaker 3: jumping around every two and three years, ads are jumping around,
- 45:51Speaker 3: so trust these are the ones that are left holding
- 45:53Speaker 3: the bag when these things change. So I think you
- 45:55Speaker 3: need a literally a constitution convention where people say, okay,
- 45:59Speaker 3: what do we want to say? And then we've got
- 46:01Speaker 3: to break down the really the stranglehold that the commissioners
- 46:06Speaker 3: have on TV rights because why are Oregon, Washington, USC
- 46:10Speaker 3: and UCLA in the Big ten because they need that
- 46:13Speaker 3: TV money because the Big ten's TV contract is so
- 46:16Speaker 3: high that they can't compete unless they have that kind
- 46:19Speaker 3: of money. Whereas you know, back in the eighties when
- 46:22Speaker 3: the TV rights were all broken up by the NCAA's monopoly,
- 46:25Speaker 3: and the TV rights is broken up by the Supreme Court.
- 46:29Speaker 3: My dad was one of the people that got involved
- 46:30Speaker 3: with the guy Nam Chuck Knives was with the Big Eight.
- 46:33Speaker 3: Back then it was only eight and a bunch of
- 46:35Speaker 3: other conferences, and they got together and said, let's get
- 46:38Speaker 3: a national TV package, Let's split this revenue equally, and
- 46:42Speaker 3: let's make sure we've a play level playing fields so
- 46:44Speaker 3: all we want. We're not looking for a massive advantage.
- 46:46Speaker 3: You know, you didn't have commissioners saying, well, we don't
- 46:49Speaker 3: care about the Southwest Conference, the Big Eight. We want
- 46:52Speaker 3: to have a massive advantage, so we're going to have
- 46:54Speaker 3: it built an advantage with you on everything we do. You
- 46:57Speaker 3: had people that said, the health of the game across
- 46:59Speaker 3: the country has to be good because right now, I mean,
- 47:03Speaker 3: you look at football on the West coast. You know,
- 47:06Speaker 3: Stanford Calory acc they're not drawing UCLA right now is
- 47:11Speaker 3: not drawing anybody, you know, and that's not good for
- 47:14Speaker 3: the game. So I think you need a national conference
- 47:17Speaker 3: on this thing. Where we go, Let's get a national
- 47:19Speaker 3: television right television rights package. Let's level out the television
- 47:23Speaker 3: rights for everybody so that everybody feels like they can compete.
- 47:26Speaker 3: And now USC UCLA, Oregon, and Washington kind of go
- 47:30Speaker 3: back to a Pac twelve because its not just impacting football.
- 47:34Speaker 3: I mean you have lacrosse teams and soccer teams from
- 47:37Speaker 3: those schools that are coming East three and four times
- 47:40Speaker 3: a year, which is it's ridiculous. Yep. So you know,
- 47:44Speaker 3: football is kind of got to do their own thing.
- 47:46Speaker 3: If they want to have this super conferenceable, then let's
- 47:49Speaker 3: divorce them from the conference structures or look at some
- 47:52Speaker 3: way of doing that to now where your Olympic sports
- 47:56Speaker 3: are regionalized. And then it makes no sense for you know,
- 47:59Speaker 3: ore into lacrosse team to be in a league with
- 48:03Speaker 3: with Penn State. You know. Yeah, so but that's that's
- 48:07Speaker 3: that's where i'd start. But I would certainly have a
- 48:10Speaker 3: player's union, I would have collective bargaining, I would have contracts.
- 48:13Speaker 3: So basically because right now it's all one side of
- 48:15Speaker 3: the player's favor, I'm gonna come to you after two years.
- 48:18Speaker 3: You've invested all this time, You've got a lot of
- 48:20Speaker 3: these kids get into schools they wouldn't get into otherwise.
- 48:23Speaker 3: And in all this, you know I mentioned school, Nobody
- 48:26Speaker 3: ever talks about what this does for kids academically, jumping
- 48:29Speaker 3: around all the Oh, of course, yeah, and no one cares, right, yeah,
- 48:33Speaker 3: thank you for saying that, Jay, nobody cares, you know.
- 48:36Speaker 2: They just they just want to return on investment from
- 48:38Speaker 2: the player.
- 48:39Speaker 3: And we are in the sports entertainment business and we
- 48:41Speaker 3: may as well own it, Jay Let's And I.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Think, honestly, that's a perfect place to kind of leave it,
- 48:50Speaker 2: because the sooner that people realize what you just said
- 48:55Speaker 2: right there and own it and deal with it in
- 48:58Speaker 2: this new age. And and and I'll one thing about that.
- 49:02Speaker 3: I think the important thing is this. If you look
- 49:06Speaker 3: at what just happened in Virgin and Tech. They fired
- 49:08Speaker 3: their coach, right, and all the talk has been about
- 49:12Speaker 3: they have to put money in athletics. Okay, their board
- 49:15Speaker 3: of trustees just just agreed to increase their athletic budget
- 49:19Speaker 3: by fifty million dollars a year. Now, where's that money
- 49:22Speaker 3: coming from. That's taking away from the educational mission of
- 49:27Speaker 3: the school and school Minnesota is not doing ring in
- 49:32Speaker 3: the same kind of revenue picked states that may be
- 49:34Speaker 3: in Minnesota's future, that may be in Indiana's future, that
- 49:38Speaker 3: may be in a bunch of people's future. And once
- 49:41Speaker 3: if we're going to do that way is be a
- 49:43Speaker 3: sports business, and let's make them stand on their own truly.
- 49:47Speaker 3: We you know, we just we just were borrowing seven
- 49:50Speaker 3: hundred million dollars to renovate our statement. Okay, right, we
- 49:54Speaker 3: couldn't borrow that money based on our athletic department's balance
- 49:57Speaker 3: sheet alone. Right, If the off David have to look
- 50:01Speaker 3: for much more modest and affordable and reasonable renovation. But
- 50:05Speaker 3: we're backing them, So I say that, But I also
- 50:08Speaker 3: say we've we've got They've got it. If we're going
- 50:10Speaker 3: to do that, they've got to have a business model
- 50:12Speaker 3: that reflects the reality of their business.
