Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello. My name is David Simmonitch. I am the vocalist
- 0:03Speaker 1: of Signs of the Swarm and we will be causing
- 0:07Speaker 1: a ruckus over in the Australian region fairly soon, so
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm very excited to be chatting with Heavy Magazine or Heavy.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Mag fantastic David, Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Not a problem at all, always my pleasure.
- 0:24Speaker 2: No, So, as you say, Signs of the Swarm will
- 0:27Speaker 2: be bringing their ruckus to Australia in March for running
- 0:30Speaker 2: shows with Born of Vasaras starting in Adelaide on March
- 0:33Speaker 2: eight eighth and hit in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney of
- 0:35Speaker 2: the consecutive days. So it's not too far away now, brother,
- 0:38Speaker 2: you're packed and ready.
- 0:39Speaker 1: To go, absolutely not. I need a start pack and
- 0:46Speaker 1: that's for damn sure.
- 0:50Speaker 2: You're going to be coming over a pretty battle hard
- 0:53Speaker 2: and made after a completely sold out US tour recently.
- 0:55Speaker 2: That must have been good feeling.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a good spirits all around dude, and
- 1:02Speaker 1: been kind of just trucking along, you know. We've been
- 1:05Speaker 1: uh we just did Europe recently with Chelsea Grin. That
- 1:09Speaker 1: was a good time. But I've been enjoying some time
- 1:14Speaker 1: at home I've toured a lot over the last year
- 1:18Speaker 1: with the album cycle and everything, but now that the
- 1:22Speaker 1: new year is starting to pan off, it's time to
- 1:25Speaker 1: get time to get my suitcase packed and get ready
- 1:28Speaker 1: very back to it, brother.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You know, you bringing with your reputation for being one
- 1:34Speaker 2: of the metal's most ferocious like bands might like, is
- 1:37Speaker 2: that a badge of want of your way? Bradly?
- 1:39Speaker 1: Absolutely, I feel like that we bring an attitude that
- 1:44Speaker 1: a lot of people can't imitate because it's very organic.
- 1:50Speaker 1: We just try to be ourselves and that's just the
- 1:54Speaker 1: energy that conveys of us just being ourselves, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 1: good old American Death Corps. Brother.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yeah, the sod at Us run right was to celebrate
- 2:07Speaker 2: so on this one ten years as a band. So
- 2:10Speaker 2: was it all work out on the right bight or
- 2:11Speaker 2: did you get a chance to celebrate them all time?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Uh? It was all work man. Headlining is a kind
- 2:17Speaker 1: of a it's a lot it's it's a lot easier
- 2:21Speaker 1: just supporting people, you know, but headlining, Yeah, you got interviews?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Do you got more than what I've been doing direct
- 2:30Speaker 1: for the Born of Asaris tour? You know, But there's
- 2:35Speaker 1: just a lot of work into it. Uh, I'm usually
- 2:38Speaker 1: like building like lights and stuff, Uh, to kind of
- 2:41Speaker 1: save us on expenses. So there's just a lot more work,
- 2:45Speaker 1: you know, and this run that we're doing, we're kind
- 2:50Speaker 1: of seeing it as a paid vacation. Get to kind
- 2:53Speaker 1: of go cause some cause, some noise in some areas
- 2:56Speaker 1: we haven't been in in a while, and just have
- 2:58Speaker 1: some fun with our friends and Ornavisirius.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, ten years is a pretty big molestone. I know
- 3:05Speaker 2: you haven't been with the band for that whole ten years,
- 3:07Speaker 2: but what sorts of things have you learned about yourself
- 3:10Speaker 2: and your music of your journey day.
- 3:15Speaker 1: There's been a lot of learning curves professionally and musically,
- 3:21Speaker 1: always figuring out like sometimes you have to find the
- 3:26Speaker 1: right balance of what you want to do and what
- 3:28Speaker 1: your fans will like where you'll be happy to play
- 3:33Speaker 1: it for ten more years, you know what I mean.
- 3:37Speaker 1: So there's some songs on other records where I'm like, man,
- 3:40Speaker 1: I hope I never have to play that one. Just
- 3:44Speaker 1: my head was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You know, can't control what the world hands you while
- 3:50Speaker 1: you're trying to be creative and trying to focus on
- 3:53Speaker 1: a career. You know, and also just life experiences, like
- 3:59Speaker 1: there some songs from our record abs Overer that I
- 4:03Speaker 1: probably will never play again because the person that I
- 4:07Speaker 1: was writing about died and it just kind of hits
- 4:10Speaker 1: a different spot nowadays than it did whenever I wrote it.
- 4:16Speaker 1: But yeah, a lot of learning curves professionally as well.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I learned that I just can't tell everybody to suck
- 4:23Speaker 1: by dick and fuck off, you know what I mean?
- 4:28Speaker 1: I know, right, It actually, once you get up into
- 4:33Speaker 1: different tiers of things, it just causes more problems than
- 4:36Speaker 1: it's worth, I guess, you know, at the end of it,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I know, right, But it's just like now you got
- 4:49Speaker 1: to learn how to say it professionally, you know what
- 4:51Speaker 1: I mean. Uh, but it's it's.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Cool, you know.
- 4:59Speaker 1: You know, I could never imagine somebody hit me with
- 5:01Speaker 1: that Holy shit.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Sin. We should move on before we get in trouble.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 2: You're coming out without Born of Basars, so I think
- 5:13Speaker 2: we're actually understating the fact that that is going to
- 5:16Speaker 2: be a brutal as fuck double act, man like insane.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, we've toured with Born of Asirius in the past.
- 5:24Speaker 1: It was a couple of years ago. It was actually
- 5:28Speaker 1: my bass players.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Like.
- 5:31Speaker 1: First real tour that he did with us, other than
- 5:34Speaker 1: our headliner that we did back in the day. So like,
- 5:38Speaker 1: we're all familiar with the guys in Born of Osiris,
- 5:41Speaker 1: We're friends with them, So it's honestly just gonna be
- 5:45Speaker 1: a great time. Them kind of conquering this progressive technical
- 5:50Speaker 1: side of metal and us kind of conquering like the
- 5:55Speaker 1: kind of brutal, relentless side of the metal. I feel
- 5:59Speaker 1: like it's going to be a great night, just very diverse.
- 6:03Speaker 1: It's gonna have almost everything that you could possibly want
- 6:06Speaker 1: to hear in a metal show. You know. We're also
- 6:10Speaker 1: got some great local supports. I'm very stoked because a
- 6:14Speaker 1: lot of them are really sick. Yeah, Like, it's honestly
- 6:20Speaker 1: going to just be a great time, and I'm I
- 6:23Speaker 1: can't wait for it.
- 6:24Speaker 2: No, I said, you're ready your last you know, twenty
- 6:27Speaker 2: twenty two, I believe on tour with within Destruction. So
- 6:31Speaker 2: how is your live show growing or changed?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Incend are Our budget for our gear has grown exponentially,
- 6:42Speaker 1: so our sound quality is a lot better. We've grown
- 6:49Speaker 1: and understood what feels right on stage. Back then, we're
- 6:56Speaker 1: still kind of figuring it out nowadays, it's kind of
- 7:01Speaker 1: like riding a bike. We get on stage and we
- 7:03Speaker 1: just have a good time and vibe out. It's not
- 7:06Speaker 1: really questionable.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I'm hoping that my travel experience is a lot easier
- 7:13Speaker 1: than my last time. The last promoter that brought us
- 7:17Speaker 1: out there kind of didn't do us justice and kind
- 7:20Speaker 1: of ruined the vibe where we were kind of miserable
- 7:23Speaker 1: on stage every day just from lack of sleep. I
- 7:27Speaker 1: think that we're there during your winter. From what I recall,
- 7:32Speaker 1: there's times where we're sleeping in people's basements, no blankets,
- 7:36Speaker 1: no like, no sleeping accommodations, and just kind of ruined
- 7:40Speaker 1: the vibe for us. You know, it's hard to kind
- 7:43Speaker 1: of be on your a game whenever you barely slept
- 7:51Speaker 1: because you're freezing cold, you know.
- 7:55Speaker 2: On our look after this in the world, Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Looking forward to it. Everybody's been kind of hyping me up,
- 8:03Speaker 1: get me real excited for this one. So and uh
- 8:08Speaker 1: but yeah, shout out to the Within Destruction guys. They
- 8:11Speaker 1: they showed us a good time over there. We got
- 8:14Speaker 1: to do like a bunch of just cool activities with them.
- 8:17Speaker 1: They helped us out a lot because we lost gear
- 8:20Speaker 1: as well, just from traveling all over Asia and then
- 8:24Speaker 1: coming to Australia. Uh, we lost a lot of stuff
- 8:29Speaker 1: and they helped us out a lot.
- 8:31Speaker 2: And I understand you try to try with the kangaroo
- 8:35Speaker 2: as well.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Hell yeah. I actually was laying around and like like
- 8:42Speaker 1: I almost fell asleep because like I was just like
- 8:45Speaker 1: laying there with it, just chilling. But yeah, like, honestly,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you want to talk about toe to toe the motherfucking
- 8:53Speaker 1: spider that I found in that toilet, Dude, That shit
- 8:56Speaker 1: was crazy. I killed that motherfucker so fast. I was
- 9:01Speaker 1: butt naked in the bathroom of some hostel. Dude, I'm
- 9:04Speaker 1: going into like the shower was all just one room
- 9:07Speaker 1: and the toilet was there. I go to take a
- 9:09Speaker 1: shit and the motherfucker goes running. I'm like, yo, I
- 9:13Speaker 1: grab the shower thing and I go and like I'm
- 9:15Speaker 1: just like, ah, smash the shit out of it. That
- 9:19Speaker 1: was crazy. You heard me screaming, not in a good
- 9:23Speaker 1: way in that bathroom, like everybody thought I was dying
- 9:27Speaker 1: for a second.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I'm not going to be able to get that mental
- 9:30Speaker 2: image out of my head all day now, mate. Thanks.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Oh fuck yeah, before there you go, bro, I've got
- 9:38Speaker 2: a new segment I've started calling photo bombs. So basically,
- 9:41Speaker 2: I've trolled through your social media. I've come up with
- 9:43Speaker 2: a couple of photos that i want to know a
- 9:45Speaker 2: little bit more about. So we'll start off with a
- 9:48Speaker 2: nice one. We spoke about your live show before and
- 9:51Speaker 2: how gracious it is, but I reckon this gives a
- 9:54Speaker 2: pretty good education.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that was one of my favorite venues in Texas.
- 10:02Speaker 1: That is that come and take it, And that is
- 10:07Speaker 1: just one of many crowd stage divers that we've had.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Like that's kind of like a staple for our shows. Legally,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I'm not supposed to encourage that, uh, but my fans
- 10:22Speaker 1: love to have a good time. They either more than
- 10:25Speaker 1: welcome to jump on stage and jump off in their
- 10:28Speaker 1: own respect. I just hope that everybody does it safely
- 10:33Speaker 1: and doesn't hurt anyone or hurt themselves. But this is
- 10:37Speaker 1: the kind of energy that us assigns of this warm
- 10:41Speaker 1: are used to. We don't like people that just stand around.
- 10:46Speaker 1: We don't start talking shit. Uh yeah, Like, do.
- 10:52Speaker 2: You remember what the look on his face was like?
- 10:54Speaker 2: Was he enjoying himself or was he.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Like dude, though, key, I'm blind as fuck, so I
- 10:58Speaker 1: can't see. It's a blur to me, like I just
- 11:02Speaker 1: see bodies flying and I'm just dodging, you know what
- 11:04Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like yeah, because fun fact, I actually have
- 11:09Speaker 1: an eye disease called starguard disease where my retinas are deteriorating,
- 11:14Speaker 1: so I'm losing my central vision. So I'm kind of
- 11:20Speaker 1: like whenever I'm up there, I'm lucky to see the floor.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Bro, Well, I'll be on spot watch for you the
- 11:28Speaker 2: whole time if any of them.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that dude, I'm gonna have a bodyguard this time around.
- 11:34Speaker 1: God damn.
- 11:37Speaker 2: On the second part of right, I'm trying to come
- 11:38Speaker 2: up with a story in my head to explain it,
- 11:40Speaker 2: but you're gonna have to do it for me because
- 11:42Speaker 2: it's fucking awing on you.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Oh god, I was so tired. Illegal piece is it's
- 11:53Speaker 1: kind of like Chipotle. I don't know if you're familiar
- 11:57Speaker 1: with that. It's like Chipot. It's like a burrito like uh,
- 12:03Speaker 1: like Taco Bull, you know, so like that place they
- 12:10Speaker 1: always hook it up where they give us free catering
- 12:14Speaker 1: whenever we come through. It's a great company. But I
- 12:18Speaker 1: was so tired that day that They're like, we need
- 12:23Speaker 1: to take a group picture, and I just laid on
- 12:26Speaker 1: the ground and I was like, you guys can do
- 12:28Speaker 1: whatever you want. I'm just gonna lay here because I
- 12:30Speaker 1: was so fool and I was ready to take a nab.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I got to say, you guys have all got sensational
- 12:37Speaker 2: legs as oh brother him. Thanks yeah, Davil, Thanks you Tom.
- 12:47Speaker 2: I've been to play a chatting with you Signs of
- 12:50Speaker 2: the Swarming here with Born of Bastars from Market eighteenth,
- 12:53Speaker 2: and guaranteed it's going to be the most brutal double
- 12:55Speaker 2: hitter you see. If you so, you get tickets from
