Transcript
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: It's time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the DD show that we normally do where we taste and rank some beer.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: How are we doing tonight, fellas?
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is gonna be a good one.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: We are slaying it tonight, Ross.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Slaying it for all like the Gym Xers and Gen Zers that are slay.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Slay.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: I probably completely mess that up.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Us millennials don't know what that means.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: It's like they're trying to talk to me, but I just don't understand.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's time for us to rank uh and talk about another brew.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Brett, what do we have on deck tonight?
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: All right, tonight we have Dead Man's Run from Cosmic Eye Brewing out of Lincoln, Nebraska.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: So back to back, Lincoln, Nebraska.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: This is actually one of my more favorite beers out there right now.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Um, if I go somewhere and I see this, I will always pick up a six-pack of this and try to have it around.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Um, not only for me to drink, but so I can like share some with my friends because this is a solid all-around beer.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: So this one, the uh we found a couple different packages, packaging designs on it.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, the one that we have is a red label uh all the way around it.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: There's some white versions of it, just sounds looks like they've been tweaking it a little bit over time.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Um and the beer description uh coming from Cosmic Eye.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: This American style lager is our version of a beer beer made with 50% corn and late editions of Saaps.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: It's crisp, light, and refreshing.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think that's pretty accurate when we start talking about taste, like it 50% uh corn in that malt is gonna typically lead to a cleaner, crisper type taste to it.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: And I think it's a nice, easy flowing beer.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: It's like clear, it yes may taste really smooth and just fresh, right?
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: And I I think it's impressive how clear it is considering that it's an unfiltered beer, too.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think too that you can smell the malt in it, right?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Like in comparison to some of the other beers we've done, but it's not you know overly malty, and I think that comes like they said, 50-50.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: It it is a beer beer.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I love that description because as I drink this, I'm like, oh yeah, like this is a great beer.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: It's it's very drinkable, it's great, yeah.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: But it tastes like beer, it does for sure.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Uh hops, it it is fairly hops light.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Um, you don't pick up a ton of like the citrus floral fruity notes that you tend to get when in hop heavy beers like IPAs and things like that.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: But I think that's okay, but like it it definitely plays into their beer beer drinking style for this.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I completely agree.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And I, you know, I'm not a hundred percent certain like what the the Saz style of hops is, what that kind of brings to the table.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: But to Ross's point, like it's not like a citra or something like that that really punches you with some of those citrus or floral or even piney notes.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: You don't pick any of that up from the Saz hops here.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: And I and I think um, you know, again, going back to them saying this is a this is almost a beer drinker's beer, the the ABV plays into that.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: It's a five percent beer, so it's very similar to your to your other domestics that are out there.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then that final note on the the kind of the taste list that we go to is the yeastiness of it.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: And you don't get a lot of yeast in this, but you don't typically on on very drinkable beers either.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: I would say this is a great one for somebody who frequents domestic beers that wants to try out a craft beer.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: This is a very approachable one for you.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: It's definitely like that that gateway beer.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Like if you want to get into craft beers but don't really know where to start, this is a good one for that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Um, we did take a look at the color.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: The funny thing is, uh, being completely honest to all of our listeners out there, we usually drink from mugs, um, like beer steins all sitting in here.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Not clear, which which is hilarious when we go to when we go to look at the color of a beer and we're like, uh, whoops.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: And so we did we did pour this into a clear glass and uh took a look at this one, and it does skew to be a lighter color, it's a very bright color to it.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Again, going back to the malt, 50% corn is gonna lead to a brighter looking beer.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Taste and mouthfeel are kind of our last little indicator here.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Um, again, for the hundredth time already in this one, a beer drinker's beer.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: This is a nice, cream, crisp, clean beer.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is it's pretty light mouthfeel-wise, right?
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Like you can taste it.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: I would say there are some beers that you either kind of taste in the front or you taste in the back.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: I would say that I can kind of like feel this one all the way across the palate, not necessarily just heavy in the front or bites you in the back.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: So it's a full mouthfeel, but it is a light, refreshing, crisp beer, is how I would kind of describe it.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: All right, let's uh hop into our DD connections, boys.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, where are you finding this?
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: What's it called?
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Uh let's jump into the fantasy realm here.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Well, Brett's pointing at me, so I assume that means I'm gonna go first.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: You go.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: So we are finding this beer buried in the warlock's crypt in Fearune at Vecna's Eye.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, the name of the pub.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: And uh I've decided that the current warlock in charge at the crypt uh he's gonna rename this one instead of um the dead man's run.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: He has renamed this the Chill Touch.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: Ooh, I like it.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Nice cast a spell on you.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: I do like that.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Um for me, uh, just outside of Daggerford, there is a retired necromancer, if you will, who is uh creating a homebrew.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Uh he walks around with a couple of his uh dead bodies, if you will, and as he tries to pedal his zombie zest lager.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So that's uh that's a nice one.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: I don't want to know where the zest comes from.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't worry about it.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: No, don't ask, don't tell, right?
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Uh just a little nod to the dead man's run.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: So I'm going polar opposite from you guys.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: We're going to El Terell for mine.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Um, and instead of going the dead man's route, we are going to the high hall, the giant temple in El Terrell.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: And this is a a special ceremonial beer that they serve after a funeral, and it's called the Journey.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Ooh, the journey.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: That's fantastic.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, light, light, crisp.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Send you on your way.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Oh man, I wish we would have known about this when we played this.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: This would be perfect.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Dang, it's fantastic.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: I feel like mine's not as good.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Well, we can go back.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, you could just like try to raise yours from the dead and let's see what round two would be like.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: That's a good point.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: All right, yay or nay, boys, on Dead Man's Run from Cosmic Eye Brewing.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: I'd give this a big thumbs up.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, this is this is a really nice, clean, smooth beer, like we've talked about a hundred times already.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Um, really approachable if you're getting into craft beers.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: This is a good one to uh lead you on the path.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: It's not gonna punch you in the face by any means.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: It's a smooth, nice beer.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is definitely one too that I feel like I could sit down and have a few of, which I can't necessarily say about all of them that we've tried.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: So this is one definitely I could say, hey, you want to split a six-pack and do half of it, or you know, the whole thing.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it's like it's uh a lot more approachable than that pistachio beer, which you could just keep the six-pack of.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, or the big old big beer.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Hey, let's throw throwing punches.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: So the first time in two beers, uh, I am also gonna give this one a thumbs up, which is gonna give Cosmic Eye the clean sweep in terms of the opening crack crew here.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Uh so well done.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: I agree with everything you guys said.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I love this beer.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: I'm the one that brought it tonight.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, we also need to talk about quick our our challenge rating for this.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: So, Brett, where would you give this on our scale of CR one to ten?
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: I would give this a this is kind of hard.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: Like, I think like a six or a seven, probably.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: Um originally I was thinking the more like a ten, but I think it it's smellow enough that it's pretty approachable for anybody, kind of middle of the road.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: So initially when I was thinking of this, I'm like, oh, this is like super easy to drink, like super low level.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: And then I got to thinking about it.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: And I you know what, you can taste the mold, and it does have it's still clean mouthfeel, but it's a full mouthfeel.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: And I don't think it falls as low as you know, one, two, three.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: I th I would probably put this at a five, leaning towards a six.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: I think that's where I'd probably land it.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: That's where I was thinking too.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: I was I was gonna say six, and for all those same same reasons.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: I think we get lost a little bit sometimes that we like craft beer.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Agreed.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: But if we're talking for your average person who probably spends their time drinking like Bud Light, quartz light, those types of beer, this is gonna be a little bit higher on the scale.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: So I think a six-six is a six is I've we've never said that ever.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: We try to avoid saying bush and talking about bush on this on this show.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: All right, that's uh gonna do it for this episode.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Brett, if you want to know more about if we if our listeners want to know more about cosmic eye brewing, where would they go to find this out?
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: It is cosmiceye.beer online or head on over to Lincoln, Nebraska to Cosmic Eye Brewing.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, good on them for locking down the cosmic eye.beer.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Dang right.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Good for them.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, but that's gonna do it for this episode of the opening crack.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Stay tuned for more beer reviews in the future.
