- Lucas: Hi everyone. Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I am Lucas. This is episode two hundred sixty one. Luna: And I am Luna. Hey friends. We are so glad you are here with us today. Lucas: We have been doing a lot of talking about food lately. Remember episode two fifty nine? We talked about tastes like sweet and spicy. Luna: Yeah. And before that, we learned how to order noodles at the hawker center. But today, we want to move inside the kitchen. Lucas: Exactly. We want to learn how to cook. Specifically, two very common actions you see every day in Malaysian kitchens. Luna: I love cooking. Or at least, I love watching other people cook. Especially when it smells good. Lucas: So let us start with the first word. It is a verb. The word is goreng. Say goreng. Luna: Goreng. Lucas: Good. Goreng means to fry. Usually in oil. Like fried rice or fried chicken. Luna: Okay. So if I am making breakfast, I might say... Saya goreng telur. Lucas: Perfect. That means I fry eggs. But today our example is fish. Listen closely. Lucas: Saya goreng ikan. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Lucas: You got it. Saya goreng ikan. I fry fish. Let us try it again together. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Lucas: Again. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Lucas: That was smooth. Now, frying requires movement. You cannot just leave the fish there. You must use the second word. Luna: What is the second word? Lucas: It is kacau. Say kacau. Luna: Kacau. Lucas: Yes. Kacau means to stir. Or to mix while cooking. When you are frying, you often need to stir. Luna: Oh, I see. So if I am frying vegetables, I stir them. Lucas: Correct. Here is a useful phrase. Kacau sampai rata. Listen. Lucas: Kacau sampai rata. Luna: Kacau sampai rata. Lucas: Good. Kacau sampai rata means stir until even. Or stir until mixed well. Luna: Kacau sampai rata. Lucas: Let us put them together. First, you fry. Then you stir. Listen. Lucas: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Lucas: Your turn. Slowly. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Lucas: Excellent. You are sounding like a real chef now. But wait. There is a secret to good frying. Luna: What is the secret? Lucas: The heat. If the fire is too big, the food burns. So we say api kecil. Say api kecil. Luna: Api kecil. Lucas: Api kecil means low heat. Small fire. This is important for delicate foods like fish. Luna: I always forget that. I usually turn the heat up too high. Lucas: Me too. So remember. Api kecil. Let us practice the whole mini-sentence. Lucas: Saya goreng ikan. Api kecil. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Api kecil. Lucas: Now add the stirring part. Lucas: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Api kecil. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Api kecil. Lucas: Beautiful. One more time for the listener. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Api kecil. Lucas: When you finish cooking, what do you say? Luna: You say it is delicious. Sedap. Lucas: Right. Sedap means tasty. Very tasty. Let us make it stronger. Lucas: Sedap sangat. Luna: Sedap sangat. Lucas: Sedap sangat means very delicious. Or really yummy. Luna: Sedap sangat. Lucas: Let us combine everything. Imagine you are holding a spatula. Lucas: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Api kecil. Sedap sangat. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Api kecil. Sedap sangat. Lucas: Again. From the top. Luna: Saya goreng ikan. Kacau sampai rata. Api kecil. Sedap sangat. Lucas: You nailed it. Those four phrases cover the whole process. Fry, stir, control heat, enjoy. Luna: I can already imagine making this for my family. They would be happy. Lucas: It is a simple skill. And learning these words makes the kitchen feel less scary. Luna: True. Before we go, I want to share something with you. Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay... Luna: And if you want to support independent language learning... Lucas: You can buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It helps keep the show ad-free. Luna: Thank you for listening. It really means a lot to us. Lucas: Back to the cooking. What happens if you forget to stir? Luna: Oh no. The bottom gets burnt. Hitam! Lucas: Hitam means black. Yes. So always remember. Kacau sampai rata. Luna: Never let it burn. Just keep moving the spoon. Lucas: Exactly. Practice those phrases today. Try saying them while you chop vegetables. Luna: Or while you wash the dishes. Even then. Lucas: Anytime is a good time to speak Malay. See you next time. Luna: Bye friends. Keep practicing.
