- 1:59Speaker 1: So we will be up. We're going to two a week.
- 2:01Speaker 2: We will be going to two a week for I
- 2:04Speaker 2: don't know, I have no clue, I know until we
- 2:07Speaker 2: get to the spring tour, which will be mid March.
- 2:09Speaker 2: We're gonna start doing our NCAA or college football spring
- 2:13Speaker 2: tour where we like. We went to Michigan, Tennessee, and
- 2:16Speaker 2: Nebraska last year. We got about four interviews at each spot,
- 2:20Speaker 2: dropped them on Monday Tuesday, did our regular programming on Wednesday.
- 2:24Speaker 2: It'll be similar when we get to the spring tour.
- 2:26Speaker 2: So a lot of fucking content that's gonna be coming
- 2:29Speaker 2: along with.
- 2:29Speaker 1: All of that shit.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Dude, we got bus scenes that the boy Mitch has
- 2:33Speaker 2: been working on. Bus scenes just dropped with all the
- 2:35Speaker 2: guests that we had on in the Super Bowl Week.
- 2:37Speaker 2: We do Under the Hood. JP does those vlogs for
- 2:39Speaker 2: Under the Hood, so we have a lot of content

- 2:46Speaker 2: belt down there for notifications, get notified, leave comments. All
- 2:51Speaker 2: that stuff helps and the boys busting has been on
- 2:54Speaker 2: a heat recently. We were at Super Bowl Week and
- 2:56Speaker 2: some of these some of these big dogs coming up
- 2:59Speaker 2: to us pro surprising.
- 3:00Speaker 1: They're just like, hey, we love your shit. You guys
- 3:02Speaker 1: are you guys are awesome? Blah blah blah. You're kind
- 3:04Speaker 1: of just sitting there starstruck like Colin Coward one time.
- 3:10Speaker 1: But yeah, dude, Cabo was a blast.
- 3:15Speaker 2: As you can tell your boy, I'm not even wearing
- 3:16Speaker 2: a hat, Like, is this the first time I've never
- 3:18Speaker 2: won a hat on a podcast? You know, you get
- 3:22Speaker 2: a you get a fresh little deal, you live a
- 3:23Speaker 2: little longer. On top of the wife, he compliments you
- 3:25Speaker 2: a couple of times. She gives you the cookie when
- 3:27Speaker 2: you know when you're in Cabo a few extra times,
- 3:30Speaker 2: and then you start getting told that, hey, you look
- 3:32Speaker 2: good without a hat, some kind of rock and the
- 3:34Speaker 2: no hat.
- 3:34Speaker 1: What do you think, Jack, Yeah, it looks good. Do
- 3:36Speaker 1: you like it?
- 3:37Speaker 2: I do.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I didn't even notice say that you didn't have a
- 3:39Speaker 3: hat on, But now that you bring it up, it's a.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Good appreciate that I needed. That I needed that got
- 3:45Speaker 2: a little bit of sun. You guys know how it
- 3:47Speaker 2: is being a full blown Caucasian when you're out in
- 3:50Speaker 2: the sun for the first time, especially Cabo. Yeah, blass
- 3:53Speaker 2: has no clue we're talking about. It's like, yeah, that's
- 3:56Speaker 2: between us, but you have a nice tint to you.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But for myself, I'm talking you got to reapply the
- 4:03Speaker 2: SPF fifty every forty five minutes. I was doing just
- 4:06Speaker 2: to stay safe. Day two, I went down to thirty SPF.
- 4:10Speaker 2: As you guys saw if you were keeping up with
- 4:11Speaker 2: me on social media, my belly button got a little
- 4:14Speaker 2: reamed by old Clifford the dog for a minute, and
- 4:17Speaker 2: so I had to It was one of those things
- 4:18Speaker 2: where you like, you know, you moisturize and you just
- 4:20Speaker 2: rub over, and I got like a deep hole in
- 4:22Speaker 2: my belly button. Like I'm an Inny, I'm an any guy. Yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 2: I'm an any guy. You saw wear a nice drip
- 4:27Speaker 2: down tease you a little bit. I'm just kind of
- 4:30Speaker 2: rubbing my hand over, So I forgot to take my
- 4:33Speaker 2: time to massage the inside of my hole.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But it was a blasting cobo.
- 4:38Speaker 2: A little bit of more of a spring break vibe
- 4:40Speaker 2: than a relaxing vacation on our way back yesterday, I'm thinking, man,
- 4:44Speaker 2: I was like I was throttled pretty much every day.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So I slept in every day as long as I could,
- 4:51Speaker 2: Like you know, you know when you're like used to
- 4:53Speaker 2: waking up, or like you wake up, wake up, wake up,
- 4:55Speaker 2: and you just force yourself to go back to sleep.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I was doing that every day. But that kind of
- 4:59Speaker 2: sleep is an act sleep like alcohol. Sleep is not
- 5:01Speaker 2: real sleep. So now I feel like I need a
- 5:03Speaker 2: relaxing vacation. But it was a great time. Shout out
- 5:06Speaker 2: to the Lawan's Bree Chandler Roland solo because Mike Chandler
- 5:11Speaker 2: had to leave us, had to dip on us last
- 5:13Speaker 2: minute because the boy, as you guys already know, is
- 5:16Speaker 2: on the Ultimate Fighters, so he's in Vegas in the
- 5:19Speaker 2: house right now.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But we missed.
- 5:21Speaker 2: We missed Mike, We missed Mike Chandler and Cobo, anything
- 5:26Speaker 2: else before I go to these next topics that I
- 5:29Speaker 2: hit the upcoming episode, what's up coming, what's up in
- 5:32Speaker 2: the up in the tank? And if you're in Nashville, Oh,
- 5:36Speaker 2: here's a wrinkle for the spring tour, and even in
- 5:40Speaker 2: Nashville because the Spring tour, we're dialing in our colleges
- 5:44Speaker 2: right now, but we're looking at doing a live show
- 5:47Speaker 2: at each stop we go to. So we would go in,
- 5:50Speaker 2: do a couple of interviews just like we did last year,
- 5:52Speaker 2: and then in the evening looking at venues in the
- 5:55Speaker 2: cities to do to do live shows. So be on
- 5:59Speaker 2: the lookout for all that shit at bustin WTBS. We're
- 6:02Speaker 2: at on all social media. Yeah, keep up with us there.
- 6:05Speaker 2: But this past week, being in Cabo, I didn't get
- 6:08Speaker 2: to check out the XFL. Did an't you guys get
- 6:10Speaker 2: to watch the XFL stuff. I love that Jack, I
- 6:13Speaker 2: love that you and Clumb shot at Jeremy Clump. I
- 6:15Speaker 2: love that you guys are being a vessel for the
- 6:19Speaker 2: XFL because we needed.
- 6:21Speaker 1: It's all Clump dude loves ball, dude loves ball man.
- 6:25Speaker 2: But I love that we were shouting out the XFL
- 6:28Speaker 2: and like leaning in and and helping be a fucking
- 6:32Speaker 2: microphone for the boys because.
- 6:33Speaker 4: It does positive. Yeah.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I was gonna say it seems like a lot of
- 6:37Speaker 1: players too.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Like I saw AJ Brown tweet a this XFL is
- 6:40Speaker 2: entertaining as hell, like everybody putting clips talking about it.
- 6:44Speaker 1: H the Rock.
- 6:44Speaker 2: You see him out there midfield before it all starts.
- 6:47Speaker 2: He's got a fucking authentic game, jersey on. He got
- 6:50Speaker 2: like little shoulder pads under there, just living the dream.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Fifty four. You guys know why I were fifty four
- 6:55Speaker 2: because I didn't make the fifty three man roster, so
- 6:58Speaker 2: I'm the number fifty fourth guy out there. Seven bucks
- 7:00Speaker 2: in my pocket. When I got cut in the CFL,
- 7:03Speaker 2: there was only seven bucks in my pocket. And yes,
- 7:05Speaker 2: now I'm a billionaire, but the point is I'm still
- 7:08Speaker 2: the fifty fourth man. So I wanted to buy the
- 7:10Speaker 2: league and now I have my own football league. But
- 7:13Speaker 2: I saw him out there just he was dropping gems.
- 7:17Speaker 2: But it is funny to see the rock because sometimes
- 7:19Speaker 2: it's like, brother, you don't need to do this much. Yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 2: there's a mastership. For whatever reason, he's got a mastership
- 7:27Speaker 2: on his shoulder. He's got the iron paradise wherever he
- 7:29Speaker 2: travels like he's always just pissed off for whatever reason.
- 7:32Speaker 1: For greatness.
- 7:33Speaker 2: It's like, brother, slow down, kiss your kids, hang out
- 7:36Speaker 2: with your wife, Like, enjoy your money a little bit,
- 7:38Speaker 2: enjoy the fruits of your labor. But the XFL blush
- 7:43Speaker 2: you were talking about, there were some rules you feel
- 7:46Speaker 2: you felt like people were taking a liking to the
- 7:48Speaker 2: new rules or the different rules that are implementing in
- 7:50Speaker 2: the XFL.
- 7:50Speaker 1: What are those?
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah, so some of the more we are like noticeable ones.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Was definitely the kickoff, so both teams starting five yards
- 7:57Speaker 5: apart over at the thirty yard line.
- 7:59Speaker 4: It's just like it's it's like a safety thing.
- 8:00Speaker 5: But I think the the NFL, if I'm not mistaken,
- 8:03Speaker 5: is like in like they're working together, the XFL and
- 8:06Speaker 5: the NFL to try out some new rules to hopefully,
- 8:10Speaker 5: you know, transition them into the NFL. And the kickoff,
- 8:13Speaker 5: I know for sure, is like definitely one of them,
- 8:15Speaker 5: and the reaction on social media seem pretty positive.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Bulls the kickoff one.
- 8:21Speaker 5: The kickoff one is so both teams essentially start five
- 8:25Speaker 5: yards apart over at the at the receiving team's thirty
- 8:28Speaker 5: yard line, so the kicker will still kick off from.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Where they normally do.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Once that ball is caught, the two teams cannot move
- 8:37Speaker 5: until the receiver catches the ball, so both teams are
- 8:41Speaker 5: essentially five yards apart. I don't know if you could
- 8:42Speaker 5: pull up a graphic of it, but like I said,
- 8:46Speaker 5: the both teams are are five yards apart. Once the
- 8:49Speaker 5: ball is caught, that's when the play starts essentially, so
- 8:52Speaker 5: the collision is essentially from five yards apart as opposed
- 8:56Speaker 5: to the full football length.
- 8:58Speaker 2: The players are five yards apart from show and then
- 9:00Speaker 2: right when the right when the returner catches the ball,
- 9:02Speaker 2: that's when they take off and correct the kickoff return.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Okay, here we go.
- 9:06Speaker 4: So they're trying to encourage the kickoff.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, they're they're encouraging the kickoff, is what they said.
- 9:23Speaker 5: But also like adding a safety element to it.
- 9:25Speaker 2: It takes a lot of a lot of strategy out
- 9:28Speaker 2: of it in the in the kick game. In the
- 9:30Speaker 2: kicking game, because there's no you know, doubling guys, like
- 9:34Speaker 2: it seems like everything's a one on one blocks that
- 9:36Speaker 2: everybody's just five yards apart.
- 9:38Speaker 4: You do you like it though? Like as far as
- 9:39Speaker 4: like safety, do you think.
- 9:40Speaker 1: That's as far as safety, it seems like a plus.
- 9:43Speaker 2: As far as like entertainment and violence, I think we
- 9:45Speaker 2: does a major step back for mankind and football. But yeah,
- 9:51Speaker 2: I mean, hey, safety, they're making it safe for I
- 9:54Speaker 2: would I would think in the XFL you want more,
- 9:56Speaker 2: you want.
- 9:57Speaker 3: More, like they were going a little more gritty.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I think they're.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Away from the like I'm thinking a little bit more blitz,
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Yeah, cats, I just keep
- 10:07Speaker 1: wanting to do the x Are there any other rules
- 10:12Speaker 1: that are way different? I heard that. I heard that
- 10:15Speaker 1: you can hear all the plays being called.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Yeah, so the quarterback has a mic, so you can
- 10:19Speaker 5: hear him pretty much called the play. You can hear
- 10:22Speaker 5: the head coach call the play in which I don't
- 10:24Speaker 5: know how that kind of helps. I mean that's kind
- 10:27Speaker 5: of crazy, right, Like you're essentially giving away the play,
- 10:29Speaker 5: but the announcer has a pretty good idea of what's coming,
- 10:33Speaker 5: so he's essentially Tony Romo in the whole thing.
- 10:36Speaker 1: So the announcer and everybody listening gets.
- 10:38Speaker 4: To get to hear the play come in.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Why not a coach like just.
- 10:44Speaker 3: To do stuff to entertain more fan engagement. Yeah, something
- 10:49Speaker 3: that's gonna keep people interested.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And then maybe learning something different.
- 10:54Speaker 3: I think the NFL is almost using the XFL as
- 10:56Speaker 3: like a trial run for like different like schemes and
- 11:01Speaker 3: like ruling. So like if they try and incorporate stuff
- 11:04Speaker 3: in the NFL, you know in the next coming seasons
- 11:06Speaker 3: that work really well at the XFL, maybe there makes sense.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Like if you're in the XFL, you want to work
- 11:11Speaker 2: in hand in hand with the NFL.
- 11:13Speaker 3: So a free like they can't do anything wrong because
- 11:16Speaker 3: it's like this league that's just getting started back up
- 11:20Speaker 3: again for the however many time.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Right, Because if you're working with the NFL, it's more
- 11:25Speaker 2: it'll end up being more you know, eyes ears them
- 11:28Speaker 2: encouraging it. Like if you were kind of standing alone
- 11:31Speaker 2: doing your own things, say more ww S dollar generation
- 11:34Speaker 2: x so to speak, like the NFL would be hands
- 11:36Speaker 2: off and not even bother promoting or working with you
- 11:39Speaker 2: or doing anything to help that league, like stay afloat.
- 11:42Speaker 2: So probably that that is probably a smart move. And
- 11:45Speaker 2: it's a way for guys who you know, outside of
- 11:47Speaker 2: the you know, making a team in the NFL. It
- 11:50Speaker 2: is a way to get some tape out there. I
- 11:52Speaker 2: saw Josh Gordon was out there. He caught a touchdown pass. Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Aj mccern's out there too.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Really Yeah, yeah, I saw some guys out there, you know,
- 11:59Speaker 2: might have to I have to make some moves.
- 12:02Speaker 4: One of the things.
- 12:06Speaker 5: The way you could challenge you could challenge fouls or
- 12:08Speaker 5: potential fouls, which is kind of crazy. So you can
- 12:11Speaker 5: challenge like holding, you could help, you could challenge penalties.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yeah, the whole. Yeah, there's so much greater in that.
- 12:17Speaker 2: But I get it being like a little testing, testing,
- 12:21Speaker 2: like but not just that. But they're trying to do
- 12:22Speaker 2: their own thing and find their own lane too.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Uh.
- 12:25Speaker 2: But I'm glad we're leaning into it, and there's never
- 12:27Speaker 2: a bad time like with one football's on, especially if
- 12:29Speaker 2: everybody's into it. It's it's good that we have that
- 12:34Speaker 2: now that the NFL season is over, because it did
- 12:37Speaker 2: seem like a lot of people were tuned in and
- 12:38Speaker 2: having a good time with it. Shall we do the
- 12:41Speaker 2: shot out? No fore shoutout? Then introduced Dave Ziggler, Sure blast,
- 12:46Speaker 2: you got one.
- 12:47Speaker 1: You want to start?
- 12:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I got a quick one. So my shout out
- 12:51Speaker 5: no free shoutout this week. It actually happened to me
- 12:53Speaker 5: on the way here to the bus early this morning.
- 12:56Speaker 5: I knew we were gonna hit traffic because we were
- 12:57Speaker 5: starting a little bit early, so we're gonna hit that morning.
- 13:00Speaker 5: But one of the good things about living in the
- 13:03Speaker 5: city of Nashville for roughly three four years now is
- 13:06Speaker 5: knowing those alternate routes. So I saw traffic was pretty
- 13:10Speaker 5: backed up, and I remembered, like, there's an alternate There's
- 13:13Speaker 5: an alternate route once I hit this ramp. So what
- 13:15Speaker 5: I had to did is that I hit that exit,
- 13:18Speaker 5: took that alternate route, beat all the traffic, and got
- 13:20Speaker 5: here with no issues.
- 13:22Speaker 1: That is nice.
- 13:22Speaker 2: It is good when you got the little old you know,
- 13:25Speaker 2: the ultimate routes on the back of your hand. You
- 13:26Speaker 2: kind of know them over everybody else, and you're a cop,
- 13:29Speaker 2: so weird flex on that too.
- 13:34Speaker 3: My shoutout never shout out is also travel related. I
- 13:37Speaker 3: was sligning back from TYL yesterday. We had a flight delay.
- 13:41Speaker 3: There was like thirty minutes and we're already getting back
- 13:43Speaker 3: at like midnight, and that extra thirty minutes is crucial,
- 13:46Speaker 3: especially on a Sunday night. So we're on our last
- 13:50Speaker 3: leg of the journey and the pilot comes over the intercom.
- 13:53Speaker 4: He's like, like good news.
- 13:54Speaker 3: It's like, I know, we have the delay, but we
- 13:56Speaker 3: have like one hundred and thirty mile hour winds behind us,
- 13:59Speaker 3: so we're gonna cut off like forty five minutes.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Of flight time.
- 14:02Speaker 1: So we ended up getting there fifteen.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Minutes early, which is nice, and then like the whole
- 14:06Speaker 3: time though, it was a pretty turbulent ride, pretty bumpy,
- 14:08Speaker 3: But I think you sacrifice some things for the greater
- 14:12Speaker 3: good of time. So shout out, no free shout out to.
- 14:15Speaker 3: I guess just time traveling a little.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Bit, getting there a little quicker unexpectedly, that dude, my shoutout,
- 14:23Speaker 2: no free shout out. It happened a couple of times
- 14:27Speaker 2: in Cabo, and I think it's it needs a refresher
- 14:29Speaker 2: because you know, the you know, the male gender, the
- 14:33Speaker 2: testosterone is high, and sometimes you forget.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Sometimes yeah, you you think with the wrong head a
- 14:40Speaker 2: little bit, you chase the wrong things, you know what
- 14:42Speaker 2: I mean. It could be late at night and you're
- 14:43Speaker 2: drunk and we had a couple of soldiers, you know,
- 14:46Speaker 2: we had a couple of incidents.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Was the incidents instance? So whatever.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Where it's like I'm traveling back and I'm thinking, like, man,
- 14:55Speaker 2: the boys need to understand rule number one.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Unless it's just.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Agreed upon, like hey, we might get we might get
- 15:03Speaker 2: a separated do your own thing.
- 15:06Speaker 1: That's all good.
- 15:06Speaker 2: But rule number one, my shotdown know for shadout goes
- 15:10Speaker 2: to no man left behind, because a couple of times
- 15:17Speaker 2: one of the boys were left and the next morning,
- 15:19Speaker 2: like they can't get into the gate. They got to
- 15:21Speaker 2: figure out something, no cash in their pocket, they're on
- 15:23Speaker 2: cow bloah blah blah, no way to get in, blah
- 15:25Speaker 2: blah blah, all that stuff. And it happened a couple
- 15:27Speaker 2: of times where You're sitting there listening to everything and
- 15:29Speaker 2: I'm just I'm just thinking like why are we getting
- 15:32Speaker 2: in the van and not making sure whoever it is,
- 15:37Speaker 2: because a lot of times there's just duos out there,
- 15:40Speaker 2: just a couple of them that stayed out together.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Hey, we're gonna go out. Everybody else is gonna go
- 15:43Speaker 1: back to the house.
- 15:44Speaker 2: So two would be out there late at night, stay
- 15:47Speaker 2: la and each time somebody made it back, somebody didn't.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Somebody was upset that the other one left. The other
- 15:52Speaker 2: one's like, hey, I tried telling you. The only thing
- 15:54Speaker 2: is the core value of the boys when you're out
- 15:58Speaker 2: needs to be no soldier left behind. Your boy might
- 16:02Speaker 2: be drunk and he might be hard to reel in.
- 16:05Speaker 2: That's you gotta assume that you gotta be ready when
- 16:08Speaker 2: shit hits.
- 16:08Speaker 1: The fan, because shit will hit the fan.
- 16:10Speaker 2: It's all about keeping your composure and staying poised and
- 16:13Speaker 2: getting all the soldiers back on the boat.
- 16:15Speaker 1: You can't just Hey, I tried.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Telling you, and that's your thing, Like you know he's
- 16:19Speaker 2: about to get separated.
- 16:20Speaker 6: You're out, you're out another city, you're on Cabo.
- 16:23Speaker 4: You're gonna leave him.
- 16:24Speaker 2: You're gonna leave out there because you want to go
- 16:25Speaker 2: back and chase some puss or go back and get home,
- 16:28Speaker 2: like you gotta make sure you throw him in the
- 16:30Speaker 2: van and make sure he gets back. So my shoutout,
- 16:33Speaker 2: no for your shoutout goes to no man left behind.
- 16:36Speaker 2: We need to be reminded of that. We need to
- 16:38Speaker 2: be reminded of that, because that was too too many.
- 16:41Speaker 2: One time would be one too many, but that was
- 16:43Speaker 2: too too many. I'm sitting back, I'm like, what are
- 16:44Speaker 2: we fucking talking about? You guys not have the fundamental
- 16:47Speaker 2: core values of what being for the boys means, because
- 16:49Speaker 2: that's one of them. You need to stop pointing fingers
- 16:51Speaker 2: at each other. You should have you should have made sure.
- 16:54Speaker 4: He got home.
- 16:55Speaker 2: But to get that off my chest, but that's my shot,
- 16:58Speaker 2: I know, free shoutout. I'm gonna need that clip. All right,
- 17:05Speaker 2: let's get into day's sacred. Oh and do you guys
- 17:06Speaker 2: see all the chaos?
- 17:09Speaker 1: I guess I'll say I was gonna say the rumblings,
- 17:11Speaker 1: but it was fair. It seemed loud. The Jeffrey Star,
- 17:15Speaker 1: all the Jeffree Stars stuff, all the all the.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Uh, it's so funny if you go on like different
- 17:21Speaker 3: channels of ours, how like differentely. The response was on
- 17:24Speaker 3: our YouTube overwhelmingly positive.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Like, I know, I noticed that too. And then if
- 17:30Speaker 1: you go on.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Like our Twitter, overwhelmingly negative people, homophobia, screaming from the rooftops.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And then Facebook.
- 17:39Speaker 3: I think most of our core demo just deleted their
- 17:42Speaker 3: Facebook after seeing Jeffrey on there. But TikTok we had
- 17:47Speaker 3: our biggest clip ever on TikTok are that clip kind
- 17:50Speaker 3: of took the internet by storm. We had a It
- 17:53Speaker 3: got to the point where I saw so.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Many randoms, was it they the pronoun one?
- 17:57Speaker 3: Yeah, the pronoun one, which we knew that was gonna
- 18:00Speaker 3: pause a little bit of a stir.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 3: But it got to the point on Twitter where there
- 18:03Speaker 3: were so many like accounts with two million followers tagging this,
- 18:07Speaker 3: I mean, putting this clip out there and not even
- 18:10Speaker 3: knowing it from our podcast. So like I'm trying to.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I saw a woke some like woke political. I saw that,
- 18:17Speaker 2: and of course I dropped the here's the interview, That's.
- 18:19Speaker 4: What I just kept dropping the link.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Thanks checking it out.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Yeah, but yeah, creators too, like other creators on other platforms,
- 18:27Speaker 5: creating reactions to the clip and just making full on videos.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Which is great, great for great for the boys.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I just I guess I'm not surprised, like when I
- 18:38Speaker 2: saw some people like I saw one comment, it's like, oh,
- 18:41Speaker 2: I've been a day one or og like this is
- 18:44Speaker 2: this is basically like I'm done with you guys now,
- 18:49Speaker 2: like extremely homophobic. Just he's not like saying homophobic stuff,
- 18:53Speaker 2: but obviously it's like, what are you.
- 18:55Speaker 1: So fucking yeah, I've been an OG. I can't believe
- 18:59Speaker 1: you guys went here. I'm done with you guys. I'm deleting.
- 19:01Speaker 2: I'm deleting all my stuff supporting you guys now, and
- 19:04Speaker 2: I'm done watching you guys. And it's almost like you
- 19:06Speaker 2: sit there and you're kind of like, well, fucking good,
- 19:08Speaker 2: this is best for all of us. Am I surprised
- 19:10Speaker 2: that there's we have a demographic that's like that. No, Like,
- 19:14Speaker 2: when I'm seeing all the back and forth, it's like,
- 19:16Speaker 2: it's good that we're getting more.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You know, it's blown up.
- 19:19Speaker 2: We're getting you know, the stuff that you were talking
- 19:20Speaker 2: about with YouTube, TikTok all that kind of shit. But
- 19:24Speaker 2: you know, you're sitting there and you're seeing some of
- 19:26Speaker 2: these fucking wild ass comments and you're like, did you
- 19:28Speaker 2: guys even try to listen to the number one? Taylor
- 19:32Speaker 2: absolutely body backed that interview. What a phenomenal job you did.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Jeffrey was a stud like you, being open talking through everything,
- 19:38Speaker 2: the pronoun stuff, absolutely fucking hilarious. We all knew that
- 19:41Speaker 2: would cause chaos, which is so funny that something like
- 19:44Speaker 2: that causes chaos like that.
- 19:47Speaker 1: But whatever teaching there or whatever, he she.
- 19:52Speaker 2: But uh no, it's kind of like you're like surprise
- 19:55Speaker 2: and also not surprised.
- 19:56Speaker 1: You're just like, you know, people are so fucking weird.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Man.
- 19:58Speaker 1: If you're that mad, like, go figure that's that's like.
- 20:00Speaker 2: You something's wrong internally, Like go figure that shit out
- 20:04Speaker 2: if you can't, if you can't see the whole the
- 20:07Speaker 2: thing that started off as humor and joke that built
- 20:11Speaker 2: into this perfect segue to a podcast interview, and then
- 20:15Speaker 2: sitting down and having that conversation with Jeffy Star, who,
- 20:18Speaker 2: by the way, uh I don't think has been on
- 20:20Speaker 2: YouTube for a like a long time or something. He
- 20:22Speaker 2: just has like sixty something million followers I guess or subscribers.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Seems like a very savvy business person man, very savvy businessman,
- 20:32Speaker 2: he goes he is man, Yeah, very savvy businessman. And
- 20:38Speaker 2: I thought it was a good interview.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I listened to it.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I listened to all of it because I'm just you know,
- 20:42Speaker 2: I was like I was in the in the joke,
- 20:44Speaker 2: but I'm more just on Twitter, like bantering about it
- 20:47Speaker 2: and then like jab and Taylor and stuff like you know,
- 20:49Speaker 2: doing doing shit that guys do with each other. Okay stuff,
- 20:54Speaker 2: But but I wanted to listen to the interview, and
- 20:57Speaker 2: I thought it went awesome for just all the entire
- 21:00Speaker 2: dynamic of everything and Jeffrey coming in and talking about
- 21:02Speaker 2: I'm about the cup of Tanner at the end, like,
- 21:04Speaker 2: you know, shit was funny. But if people can't laugh
- 21:08Speaker 2: or not take shit, people are way too serious about
- 21:10Speaker 2: that ship. And it's like, yo, go figure your own
- 21:11Speaker 2: shit out. We don't need you to listen to the
- 21:12Speaker 2: bus with the boys. If you're going to be that.
- 21:14Speaker 4: You've been listening since day one.
- 21:16Speaker 5: You can see the progression as well, and how like
- 21:18Speaker 5: you can see the way we joke, the way we
- 21:20Speaker 5: do things like and you can't understand that from being
- 21:23Speaker 5: a day one Like.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's like, all right, are
- 21:26Speaker 2: you really take a fucking hike?
- 21:27Speaker 4: Brother?
- 21:28Speaker 3: Yeah, we might have lost like ten or so followers,
- 21:30Speaker 3: but we definitely gained like ten thousand, So for sure
- 21:33Speaker 3: it does not like.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Our subscribers we've been here. Yeah yeah, well not that
- 21:38Speaker 2: we don't want that. Yeah, we don't even want that
- 21:40Speaker 2: type of fucking exactly. Anyway, the Dave Zigler this our
- 21:47Speaker 2: first GM. He treated us real nice, had Taylor and
- 21:50Speaker 2: I over sent a car for us. We spent a
- 21:53Speaker 2: nice hour and a half with them, got us water afterwards.
- 21:55Speaker 2: It got a little rough, got a little rowdy in there,
- 21:58Speaker 2: our first GM. It was a very good experience. So
- 22:01Speaker 2: Dave Ziggler the GM of the Raiders, which Raider Nation,
- 22:06Speaker 2: You guys are gonna fucking love this interview. He's the
- 22:09Speaker 2: GM for the Raiders, but he was Taylor's guidance counselor
- 22:13Speaker 2: and I believe special teams coach when Taylor was in
- 22:16Speaker 2: high school, and Ziggler was very, uh pivotal in helping
- 22:21Speaker 2: Taylor focus up so he can get to Michigan. So
- 22:25Speaker 2: them reuniting and hearing the stories and back and forth
- 22:28Speaker 2: between them is really cool because you get an insight
- 22:30Speaker 2: on Taylor being the wild card that he was back
- 22:33Speaker 2: in the day.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Uh, and just Dave Ziggler.
- 22:36Speaker 2: His climb from being a fucking guidance counselor in high
- 22:39Speaker 2: school to working his way up through the process and
- 22:44Speaker 2: now he's the GM of the Raiders.
- 22:46Speaker 1: But very good episode.
- 22:49Speaker 2: The theme of Day of Dave Ziggler of zig like
- 22:52Speaker 2: to call him zig Uncle Zig. I love to call
- 22:54Speaker 2: him uncle Zig actually.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Is the fear fuck. Sorry, so got that little tickle
- 23:02Speaker 1: on my throat.
- 23:04Speaker 2: The theme of Dave Zigler is the fear of failure,
- 23:08Speaker 2: not being scared to fail. And you'll hear him allude
- 23:11Speaker 2: to that and talk about that a lot, and you
- 23:12Speaker 2: hear it throughout his process because he has climbed the ladder,
- 23:15Speaker 2: like through scouting, through the whole front office game, like
- 23:19Speaker 2: he's done the whole thing to be where he's at now.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Talks you know, hits on the Patriots.
- 23:24Speaker 2: And everything else, and we touched on the Derek Carr
- 23:27Speaker 2: situation and just a lot of things that he alludes
- 23:30Speaker 2: to is like, Yo, you know, I know him in
- 23:32Speaker 2: this position now, no clue how long it'll lasts. I
- 23:35Speaker 2: know I'm gonna you know, I'm gonna give it a
- 23:36Speaker 2: hell and I'm not gonna be afraid to fail. I'm
- 23:38Speaker 2: gonna go with my gut. I'm gonna go with my
- 23:40Speaker 2: instinct and it is a very good interview. I think
- 23:41Speaker 2: you guys are gonna like it a lot. Again, if
- 23:43Speaker 2: you're watching right now, make sure to subscribe. There's been
- 23:46Speaker 2: a lot of new subscribers. Welcome to the bus Boys.

- 26:56Speaker 6: this is David zil Everybody Busting with the Boys ripping
- 26:59Speaker 6: a pod. This is going to be an excellent podcast.
- 27:01Speaker 6: You you can already tell it's gonna be amazing. Yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 6: we're assuming here while the boys were setting up ten
- 27:04Speaker 6: to fifteen minutes, Zigg's out here putting on a show

- 27:19Speaker 6: we were going through text Hey can you come in
- 27:21Speaker 6: the pod? Yeah'll come in the pod. Can you do
- 27:22Speaker 6: the twenty twenty first whole thing? Will is gonna leave tomorrow.
- 27:25Speaker 6: You're like, we're gonna do the twentieth. I'm taking my
- 27:27Speaker 6: kids to legal Land. I'm getting home before five.
- 27:29Speaker 4: That's right.
- 27:30Speaker 6: But you texted you must have been speeding on the
- 27:32Speaker 6: highwa because you're like, I'll be home before four o'clock.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Yeah, the pedals to the metal. Yeah, you were trying
- 27:36Speaker 4: to get the bus, trying to get on the bus,
- 27:37Speaker 4: trying to make it happen. And yeah, I had to
- 27:41Speaker 4: I had to break some you know, some of the
- 27:43Speaker 4: some street some street coats.
- 27:45Speaker 6: Yeah, you're in the autoboto.
- 27:47Speaker 4: I you were out there, kids buckle in three kids?
- 27:50Speaker 2: Well, yeah, what is it like driving getting the kids
- 27:52Speaker 2: driving home, you're on a solo mission with the kids.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it is mental fortitude, mental toughness, patience. One of
- 28:04Speaker 4: my youth coaches always told me that cool head wins
- 28:07Speaker 4: a hot game. You know what I'm saying. You got
- 28:09Speaker 4: to have a cool head in that hot moment. There
- 28:11Speaker 4: was tensions got high a couple of times. Now, kids
- 28:14Speaker 4: are yelling, screaming, there's a fight in the back. Someone
- 28:17Speaker 4: got whipped with a coat in the eye. You know,
- 28:20Speaker 4: a zipper hit him in the eye.
- 28:21Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean it got adversity struck, niversity struck, and yeah,
- 28:26Speaker 8: I had to buckle down and just kind of, you know,
- 28:28Speaker 8: stay focused on what I came to do today, which
- 28:31Speaker 8: was be on this podcast. Ye yeah, Yeah, you were grinding,
- 28:33Speaker 8: and so you were putting in that work as a
- 28:35Speaker 8: dad and as a husband, knowing you were going to
- 28:37Speaker 8: get this reward.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Diet takes a hit on these trips to Now That's
- 28:40Speaker 4: why I was asking you when you guys have kids,
- 28:42Speaker 4: I mean the heartburn it goes high when you're eating
- 28:44Speaker 4: mini muffins, sour Patch kids, McDonald's, you're at Lego Land, uh,
- 28:52Speaker 4: Bunny Track's, King Cone. You know, I kind of finish
- 29:01Speaker 4: off the food too, you know what I mean. I
- 29:03Speaker 4: can't just be disregarding the food, so, like you know,
- 29:06Speaker 4: I go overtime on that too. So the body's hurting
- 29:08Speaker 4: a little bit, you know, the back's cramped up from
- 29:11Speaker 4: being in the car. But it was all for this moment.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Yeah, you've done it.
- 29:16Speaker 4: It's all for this moment.
- 29:18Speaker 9: Hey, this moment is wild because when you got hired
- 29:23Speaker 9: to be the GM, Taylor, he's like he was my
- 29:27Speaker 9: guidance counselor in high school. That's the most like the
- 29:31Speaker 9: most wild ship guidance counselor to NFL GM. How in
- 29:35Speaker 9: the fuck do you make that climb to get to
- 29:39Speaker 9: to get to where you are now?
- 29:40Speaker 6: Because I really don't even know your story, Like, uh,
- 29:42Speaker 6: the Arnolds, you know the Arnolds, Like they would always
- 29:45Speaker 6: of keep me up to date and I didn't really
- 29:47Speaker 6: know what you were up to, and they're like, hey,
- 29:48Speaker 6: do you know like Ziggs like number two at the Patriots,
- 29:51Speaker 6: like Ziggler my high school counselor. Ziggler Like yes, and
- 29:54Speaker 6: so I would see you. But I low key feel
- 29:56Speaker 6: like you try to sabotage me every time we play
- 29:58Speaker 6: the Patriots, because I played there three times times two
- 30:01Speaker 6: out of those three times I saw.
- 30:02Speaker 4: You, I did not play well. Rough ghost rough ghosts.
- 30:05Speaker 6: The one gume I didn't see it was the twenty
- 30:07Speaker 6: nineteen playoffs. Yes, that get to myself and got balled.
- 30:10Speaker 6: We bawled that one.
- 30:12Speaker 1: But that was when you're playing you're playing chess with
- 30:15Speaker 1: Dante I Tower.
- 30:17Speaker 6: Yeah I lost. Yeah, Yeah, I mean I definitely got
- 30:22Speaker 6: some early on set Cussy's because a lot.
- 30:24Speaker 4: I hit you with a lot of twists, a lot
- 30:26Speaker 4: of line games and stunts. Communication. You got to pick
- 30:29Speaker 4: it up. Yeah, yeah, we got you a couple of times,
- 30:31Speaker 4: I tell you.
- 30:32Speaker 6: And we just had Max on and he was talking
- 30:33Speaker 6: about how we were talking about Tadler Jones obviously and
- 30:37Speaker 6: obviously what happened to me when he's at the Cardinals.
- 30:39Speaker 6: But I was like, hey, even when I was healthy,
- 30:41Speaker 6: like the one player that's kind of had my number
- 30:43Speaker 6: the whole time has been Chandler Jones.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Yep, he's he's long lever guy. Yeah, super awkward mover.
- 30:50Speaker 6: Yes, un orthodox, that was like the word.
- 30:52Speaker 4: We change his speeds all the time. Yes, yeah, he's
- 30:55Speaker 4: he is a tough one to block.
- 30:57Speaker 6: But but go back to your high schoo counsel Yeah,
- 31:00Speaker 6: your high school counselor at Chaparral High School in Scott's, Arizona.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I come see you, my senior.
- 31:05Speaker 6: We can go into all my stuff in a little bit,
- 31:06Speaker 6: but I want to know how you made it to
- 31:08Speaker 6: a GM of possibly the coolest franchise.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Yeah, Wild Wild Journey for sure. So when I met you, obviously,
- 31:18Speaker 4: I was a guidance counselor at Chaparral High School, special
- 31:21Speaker 4: teams coordinator, running backs and tight ends coach.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Definitely getting after.
- 31:30Speaker 4: After due, my cards drawn up like we were getting
- 31:33Speaker 4: after it and and so. And then prior to that,
- 31:37Speaker 4: I'd always been before I got to Chaparral, I'd been
- 31:40Speaker 4: coaching at the high school level. I was a social
- 31:43Speaker 4: studies teacher. And then at one point I kind of
- 31:46Speaker 4: football had always been like number one, you know, from
- 31:50Speaker 4: I played in you know, all the way through high school.
- 31:52Speaker 4: I played in college, small college, all that stuff. And
- 31:55Speaker 4: then you know, I before I got to Chaparral, I
- 31:58Speaker 4: wanted to get more into college football. So I g
- 32:01Speaker 4: ate at John Carroll University, which is where I went
- 32:03Speaker 4: coach receivers there and then I was there for two
- 32:07Speaker 4: years and then I took up you know, took the
- 32:08Speaker 4: big move up and went to one double A and
- 32:10Speaker 4: went to IONA in New Rochelle, New York. Coach wide
- 32:14Speaker 4: receivers there, coach special teams, and I was finishing my
- 32:17Speaker 4: master's degree in school counseling. At the same time at IONA,
- 32:20Speaker 4: I was only making so called restricted earnings. That's always
- 32:24Speaker 4: tell said kids out there, do not take a position
- 32:26Speaker 4: that has restricted earnings. That was seven thousand dollars for
- 32:31Speaker 4: the year. Oh no, way for the year. And so
- 32:35Speaker 4: I was like, you know, this wasn't really cutting it.
- 32:38Speaker 4: And I had my master's degree and and again, so
- 32:43Speaker 4: we'll get to this, but Josh McDaniels and Nick Cassario,
- 32:46Speaker 4: who's now the GM of the Houston Texans, we all
- 32:50Speaker 4: played college football together, and so I'd really never wanted
- 32:53Speaker 4: to use them to try to level up, if you will.
- 32:56Speaker 4: I was kind of trying to make my own way
- 32:58Speaker 4: and do my own thing, and so eventually like kind
- 33:00Speaker 4: of ran out of places to go. I own it
- 33:02Speaker 4: with seven thousand dollars. I just finished my master's degree
- 33:05Speaker 4: in school counseling. So I was like going to go
- 33:07Speaker 4: back out to Arizona where I'd been before, and I
- 33:10Speaker 4: ended up at Chaparral, and so, to be honest with you,
- 33:14Speaker 4: when I was at Chaparral, I was trying to start
- 33:16Speaker 4: to make some moves of like what else can I do?
- 33:19Speaker 4: So I had interviewed for a position player development position
- 33:22Speaker 4: at Arizona State. I'd started a little LLC on the side,
- 33:27Speaker 4: all American Wide receiver training. I was trying to train
- 33:30Speaker 4: some receivers on the side and stuff like that. Yeah,
- 33:33Speaker 4: so I was trying to just figure out my way
- 33:35Speaker 4: and to be honest with you, you know again, it's
- 33:37Speaker 4: who you know. I was a bachelor party in Arizona.
- 33:42Speaker 4: It was coming off the eighteenth hole, just finished a
- 33:45Speaker 4: glorious round with the boys, and had a voicemail from
- 33:51Speaker 4: Josh McDaniels, who had just got hired as the head
- 33:53Speaker 4: coach of the Denver Broncos or he it was his
- 33:55Speaker 4: second year. He'd been hired the full year. And I
- 33:58Speaker 4: had a voicemail and it just said, Hey, have this
- 34:00Speaker 4: scouting assistant position opening. I want you to come up
- 34:03Speaker 4: and interview for it. What year was this? This was
- 34:08Speaker 4: two thousand and nine. Okay, so this is the year
- 34:13Speaker 4: after you graduated. I graduated in nine, Yes, but I
- 34:16Speaker 4: was like two thousand and eight and nine. Yes, correct.
- 34:19Speaker 4: And I didn't really even know what scouting was about,
- 34:22Speaker 4: to be honest with you. Like I mean, like I've
- 34:24Speaker 4: been a fan of the NFL, but you know, like
- 34:26Speaker 4: when you're growing up, you don't really know that there's
- 34:28Speaker 4: a scouting department and how it's all built on the
- 34:30Speaker 4: other side, you see the players and you see the coaches.
- 34:33Speaker 4: And I always wanted to coach, so I really didn't
- 34:35Speaker 4: even know what it was about. But I was like, yeah,
- 34:37Speaker 4: I'm about to go up and do this interview.
- 34:39Speaker 1: So initially though you're wanting to you're wanting to be
- 34:41Speaker 1: in the coaching ranks.
- 34:42Speaker 4: Yeah, And that's kind of how I was trying to
- 34:44Speaker 4: make my way, you know what I mean. And that's
- 34:46Speaker 4: when I went to the Arizona State thing is player development.
- 34:49Speaker 4: I was trying to get into player development so then
- 34:51Speaker 4: I could probably try to get into coaching, you know
- 34:53Speaker 4: what I mean, to get my foot in the door
- 34:54Speaker 4: at a bigger school. And so and so, anyway, I
- 34:59Speaker 4: go up and interview, and again he's the head coach,
- 35:02Speaker 4: you know what I mean. But it was it was
- 35:03Speaker 4: a painful interview, like it was like getting grilled for
- 35:08Speaker 4: like six hours, had to write up all these reports.
- 35:10Speaker 4: I didn't even know what the hell I was doing.
- 35:13Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, I get the job.
- 35:15Speaker 4: The job turns out to be taking guys to the airport,
- 35:18Speaker 4: taking guys to go get physicals, making sure that the
- 35:22Speaker 4: depth charts in the pro director's office was organized, making
- 35:25Speaker 4: these point of attack tapes, which is like a strength
- 35:27Speaker 4: and weakness's tape that we do on all the draft
- 35:30Speaker 4: draft prospects. That's what I did. And so anyway, that's
- 35:35Speaker 4: how I got there. So it was again a long
- 35:38Speaker 4: journey of always being involved in football and trying to
- 35:41Speaker 4: find my way and and and you know again, I
- 35:43Speaker 4: was at coaching high school in Ohio. Then I coached
- 35:46Speaker 4: high school for a couple of years in Arizona, and
- 35:48Speaker 4: then I left Arizona and I went to John Carroll
- 35:50Speaker 4: and I gad for two years. And then I left
- 35:52Speaker 4: being a GA for two years, and I went to Iona.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Then I left Iona, and I moved back across the
- 35:57Speaker 4: country and ended up at Chaparral and trying to figure
- 36:00Speaker 4: out this path, and then this thing kind of got
- 36:02Speaker 4: dropped on me in.
- 36:03Speaker 6: Eighteenth hole, probably a few deep, too few deep yeah,
- 36:06Speaker 6: yeah for sure, like.
- 36:09Speaker 4: Your buddy, yeah yeah, yeah, Like you're not hearing it right?
- 36:14Speaker 4: You want me to do what? Yeah?
- 36:15Speaker 6: So how many times did you go through the interview
- 36:17Speaker 6: process before?
- 36:18Speaker 4: Like it was like two interviews you get called backs.
- 36:20Speaker 4: It was two interviews, two interviews. Yeah, and then and
- 36:23Speaker 4: then I got the call back and got the job.
- 36:24Speaker 4: And then it was crazy though, because that year, that
- 36:27Speaker 4: was the year Josh got let go. He got let
- 36:29Speaker 4: go like seven months into me being in the NFL
- 36:31Speaker 4: for my first year, and then I stayed on for
- 36:34Speaker 4: two more years in Denver with John Fox. Amazing dude. Yeah,
- 36:39Speaker 4: I never worked for John Fox. John Fox is one
- 36:41Speaker 4: of the all time greats, Like just he's awesome. And
- 36:45Speaker 4: and then you know, went from there to New England
- 36:48Speaker 4: and you know, now I'm here with the Raiders.
- 36:50Speaker 2: So what made you figure out that was the like
- 36:53Speaker 2: the carrier of the path you wanted to kind of
- 36:55Speaker 2: stay in verse trying to get back in the coach
- 36:57Speaker 2: trying to wiggle back into the coaching ranks.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Yeah. The one thing was I started to kind of
- 37:04Speaker 4: get down the path of scouting and having some success.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Like I was in that role for a year and
- 37:08Speaker 4: then the next year they promoted me, and then the
- 37:10Speaker 4: next year they promoted me. So I was like kind
- 37:12Speaker 4: of making this climb up this ladder, you know what
- 37:14Speaker 4: I mean. And and I had a couple opportunities to
- 37:17Speaker 4: go back into coaching once I was in scouting for
- 37:19Speaker 4: a couple of years, but I felt like I was
- 37:21Speaker 4: already kind of making progress and I didn't want to
- 37:23Speaker 4: start back over. And then to start over and coaching,
- 37:26Speaker 4: you know, you have to be a quality control coach.
- 37:28Speaker 4: I'm like, hell, that's Arthur Smith. That's a brutal deal.
- 37:34Speaker 4: I had already ga'd for two years. And I was like,
- 37:37Speaker 4: no thanks.
- 37:37Speaker 1: You're like the whipping boy.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Yeah, no disrespect then yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 37:46Speaker 4: And the coaching side was even more volatile, do you
- 37:48Speaker 4: know what I mean? And like the cool thing about
- 37:50Speaker 4: scouting is a little bit like when you get into it,
- 37:54Speaker 4: you're a little bit of an independent contractor and in
- 37:56Speaker 4: the sense of like, okay, like you have this, you
- 37:59Speaker 4: have this stuff that you have to do. You have
- 38:01Speaker 4: to evaluate all these prospects for the draft. But it's
- 38:03Speaker 4: like the date is like, Okay, you start in the
- 38:06Speaker 4: fall and you have to have it all done by
- 38:07Speaker 4: January fifteenth, So however you choose to get that done.
- 38:10Speaker 4: It's your way of getting it done, do you know
- 38:12Speaker 4: what I mean. I mean, you have deadlines, you have
- 38:13Speaker 4: to meet again along the way, but like your day
- 38:16Speaker 4: is kind of up to you where you know, when
- 38:18Speaker 4: you're coaching, like you have meetings in the morning, and
- 38:21Speaker 4: then you have meetings before practice, and then you're at practice,
- 38:24Speaker 4: then you have meetings after practice, then you have another
- 38:26Speaker 4: staff meeting at the end of the night, and it's like,
- 38:28Speaker 4: I don't know, like just all that routine. I just
- 38:31Speaker 4: kind of got attracted to the idea of like you
- 38:33Speaker 4: were more in control of your day. You're more in
- 38:35Speaker 4: control of like the year, and and a little less
- 38:40Speaker 4: volatile than the coaching side, because you know, like the
- 38:43Speaker 4: coach gets you know, blown out. Everybody goes right, like
- 38:47Speaker 4: every coach goes. Scouting's a little bit I mean, it's
- 38:50Speaker 4: it's becoming more volatile, but there's a little bit more
- 38:51Speaker 4: consistency to it. And so yeah, that's why I end
- 38:54Speaker 4: up staying with it. I kind of just got down
- 38:55Speaker 4: that path and was kind of having some success and
- 38:58Speaker 4: I'm like, you know, I like this, I'm gonna keep
- 38:59Speaker 4: going with it.
- 39:01Speaker 2: The obsession, the passion for football has got to be
- 39:05Speaker 2: why you're you were chasing it for so.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Long, right, I mean, what a like a road to
- 39:11Speaker 1: end up getting here?
- 39:12Speaker 2: Like you're working seven thousand dollars, you're doing all these jobs,
- 39:15Speaker 2: You're looking for opportunities. Literally, it sounded like every year like, well,
- 39:19Speaker 2: let me try to go to Arizona State and then
- 39:20Speaker 2: maybe I can wiggle my way in here. I'm looking,
- 39:23Speaker 2: I'll do whatever just to try to figure it out.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Talk about that love for the game that you have.
- 39:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's funny. It's like the one thing that
- 39:31Speaker 4: I've always been good at. And again on my level
- 39:35Speaker 4: of being good, like I wasn't six two and you know,
- 39:37Speaker 4: one hundred and ninety five pounds, but I always I
- 39:40Speaker 4: always found like the most success and what came easiest
- 39:43Speaker 4: to me was football. Like school wasn't like I had
- 39:47Speaker 4: to study to get good grades. In football. I wasn't
- 39:49Speaker 4: walking in and like getting an A on a test,
- 39:51Speaker 4: Like if I didn't study, I was getting an F.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Yeah you know what I mean. And so like, yeah,
- 39:56Speaker 4: that's another story that transcript when.
- 40:02Speaker 1: It came.
- 40:05Speaker 4: But yeah, it was just something like it always came.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Like again, I always had success. It came easy to
- 40:09Speaker 4: me to a degree, and I just just always loved it.
- 40:14Speaker 4: Like when I grew up, like we were playing football
- 40:16Speaker 4: in the backyard, like you were getting knocked around, bloody nose,
- 40:20Speaker 4: losing tea, guys that are losing teeth. Like that's like
- 40:23Speaker 4: I just grew up playing football, and I grew up
- 40:25Speaker 4: loving it, and it always came easy to me. And
- 40:27Speaker 4: it always was something like I loved the physicality of
- 40:30Speaker 4: the game. I loved you know, I loved scoring touchdowns.
- 40:34Speaker 4: I loved being like being with the team. I just
- 40:37Speaker 4: loved every part of it from like I'm talking to
- 40:39Speaker 4: from eight years old all the way up. It was
- 40:41Speaker 4: just the one thing that I always loved was always constant,
- 40:44Speaker 4: you know for me, and so like, uh so, this
- 40:48Speaker 4: job is a dream, like truly a dream, do you
- 40:50Speaker 4: know what I mean? Like one, I never thought I
- 40:52Speaker 4: was a guidance counselor. I never thought it was gonna
- 40:53Speaker 4: be an NFL GM Are you kidding me? Like that's
- 40:56Speaker 4: just like wild, do you know what I mean? And
- 40:58Speaker 4: to be able to go in the office every day
- 41:00Speaker 4: and like I'm watching film, you know, I'm dealing with football,
- 41:06Speaker 4: I mean, and just then it's most basic. I could
- 41:08Speaker 4: go on and on, but it's most basically. It's like
- 41:10Speaker 4: it's not work, do you know what I mean? Like
- 41:12Speaker 4: I'm doing something I've loved since I was eight years
- 41:14Speaker 4: old every day and I'm just so grateful and appreciative
- 41:19Speaker 4: of being able to do it, like truly am, especially
- 41:21Speaker 4: because of my path to get here. And so yeah,
- 41:25Speaker 4: just that's what it is, just true love, you know,
- 41:27Speaker 4: for from like as soon as I could start playing,
- 41:30Speaker 4: I fell in love with the game and it's been
- 41:32Speaker 4: in love with it ever since.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Do you feel like that hustle in all of the
- 41:36Speaker 2: different areas that's helped that helps with the you know,
- 41:40Speaker 2: the I guess I was gonna say experience because but
- 41:43Speaker 2: you're a new NFL GM, But do you feel like
- 41:44Speaker 2: all of that experience prior helps you become the GM
- 41:47Speaker 2: that you are because you were driving guys from the airport,
- 41:50Speaker 2: do other physical stuff, breaking down tape, scouting reports, being
- 41:55Speaker 2: a coach, being doing all these different things, you feel
- 41:57Speaker 2: like a lot of that has has you know, is
- 42:00Speaker 2: uh has played into you being a GM. I'm not
- 42:04Speaker 2: I don't feel like I'm worning that or landing the
- 42:05Speaker 2: plane that well, do you know what I'm saying?
- 42:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I got.
- 42:08Speaker 6: I kind of got the idea of what you're saying,
- 42:09Speaker 6: like all the experiences of it, like the unique route
- 42:12Speaker 6: you've had to go on.
- 42:12Speaker 4: I feel, like he.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Said, in a lot of the in a lot of
- 42:15Speaker 2: the seats, Yeah, to where he can understand perspective from
- 42:17Speaker 2: a lot of the jobs that are below that.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Are you know, below you the people that work for.
- 42:21Speaker 4: You, Yeah, I think that. And I think my experience
- 42:23Speaker 4: of being a teacher and being a guidance counselor not
- 42:26Speaker 4: being in the NFL right away has given me some
- 42:29Speaker 4: perspective in terms of like I'm true. Like I said,
- 42:34Speaker 4: I I am truly grateful and appreciative to have the
- 42:36Speaker 4: job that I have, and I try to carry that
- 42:38Speaker 4: attitude into work every day and being consistent, treating people
- 42:42Speaker 4: the right way, having a positive attitude, not making the
- 42:47Speaker 4: moment too big and letting the job get too big
- 42:50Speaker 4: and kind of overwhelming. And I think like my other
- 42:53Speaker 4: experiences and like again like being a guidance counselor, to
- 42:56Speaker 4: be honest with you, And this was even at Chaperon,
- 42:58Speaker 4: which was a you know, a wealthy school. I mean
- 43:00Speaker 4: I dealt with kids that were dealing with like heavy
- 43:02Speaker 4: issues drug abuse, suicide, like you know, like and so
- 43:08Speaker 4: like again like these moments, this is still football. And
- 43:12Speaker 4: so for me, like all that has given me a perspective,
- 43:14Speaker 4: like some of my past experiences of like what my
- 43:17Speaker 4: attitude and how I look at the job and how
- 43:19Speaker 4: I handle the job, because you can get overwhelmed and
- 43:22Speaker 4: there are a lot of stressful things that come across
- 43:24Speaker 4: your play. There is a lot of work, there is
- 43:25Speaker 4: a lot of pressure, and you could let it kind
- 43:28Speaker 4: of like bury you. And I was, you know, again,
- 43:31Speaker 4: I'll go on a tangent, but I was always curious.
- 43:33Speaker 4: I've always been curious to know, like I've seen people
- 43:35Speaker 4: become a head coach and you guys have seen this too.
- 43:38Speaker 4: A guy that was a position coach or a guy
- 43:40Speaker 4: that you was in a different role, they become a
- 43:42Speaker 4: head coach and they become a GM. That pressure can
- 43:44Speaker 4: change you, oh absolutely. And I was always curious of
- 43:48Speaker 4: how that was going to go for me because I
- 43:50Speaker 4: knew that it could happen, and people were always like,
- 43:53Speaker 4: you know, I was always like, well, I'm going to
- 43:55Speaker 4: be this way if I ever get this job. But
- 43:57Speaker 4: I also knew from seeing other people. I didn't really
- 43:59Speaker 4: truly know if I was going to be able to
- 44:01Speaker 4: be this way when I say this way, just be consistent, yeah,
- 44:05Speaker 4: and you know what I mean. And that was the
- 44:06Speaker 4: one thing that like, I think my life experiences have
- 44:10Speaker 4: helped me kind of have a little bit perspective on that.
- 44:13Speaker 6: And like having the awareness you do too, because the
- 44:16Speaker 6: things I've been in situations where a position coach was
- 44:19Speaker 6: put in as an interim coach, a head coach, and
- 44:22Speaker 6: just the interim tag, they completely change their attitude, their mindset,
- 44:26Speaker 6: how they handle themselves with other players, and it's like, Yoho,
- 44:29Speaker 6: who the fuck is this guy? Like I thought you
- 44:31Speaker 6: were this man, Now you're this guy. But with you
- 44:34Speaker 6: like the awareness of being like, well, how am I
- 44:37Speaker 6: going to handle if I have this level of success?
- 44:39Speaker 6: And it's totally different, Like my experience with the Titans.
- 44:42Speaker 6: I love John Robinson to death. I think he's a
- 44:44Speaker 6: phenomenal guy. Like he put a lot of trust in
- 44:46Speaker 6: me and I did my best to like support him
- 44:49Speaker 6: in that situation. But he did a he would keep
- 44:52Speaker 6: very much business like, he would keep business relationships. He
- 44:55Speaker 6: would not get very close to the players, like you'd
- 44:56Speaker 6: have to get conversations. But it really wasn't like that
- 45:00Speaker 6: with you just sitting in here before, Like while we're
- 45:01Speaker 6: setting up, you're like, basically, this is fucking cool. I'm
- 45:05Speaker 6: a I'm a GM, And like you're like, you're kind
- 45:08Speaker 6: of like you said, you're kind of getting a taste
- 45:10Speaker 6: of what fame is, and like you're you seem to
- 45:13Speaker 6: be handling it gracefully. You seem to be handling it
- 45:17Speaker 6: as if like you're not taking it for granted, like
- 45:19Speaker 6: you're really embracing the moment because you don't how long
- 45:21Speaker 6: it's gonna be, Like this is a door of the NFL.
- 45:26Speaker 6: Does that how does that play a factor for you?
- 45:28Speaker 6: When you're like, Okay, I'm the GM right now, Like
- 45:30Speaker 6: we're on top. Right three years ago, I was making probos.
- 45:33Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying, Well, yeah, stuff, you're on top.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Coming, you're on top.
- 45:44Speaker 4: I mean, you know the class. But you know what
- 45:45Speaker 4: I'm saying, you did it for a year. Yeah, that's cool.
- 45:48Speaker 4: Top part was before the season started, everyone was asking
- 45:50Speaker 4: me like, how's it going.
- 45:52Speaker 6: You guys really was saying you guys are winning the AFC.
- 45:57Speaker 6: The Chiefs will not make the playoffs.
- 45:59Speaker 4: I'm like it's I can swear right. Yeah, I'm like
- 46:03Speaker 4: fucking great. I'm like, none of our none of the
- 46:05Speaker 4: trades stink, none of our draft picks. Have you.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Like?
- 46:12Speaker 4: This is awesome? I kept telling my wife, kept telling
- 46:15Speaker 4: Chris like just wait, like it's smooth now, like it's coming.
- 46:20Speaker 4: I knew it was coming, just because that's that's like
- 46:23Speaker 4: Twitter and everything, like that's how it is, do you
- 46:27Speaker 4: know what I mean? And so, but again, like back
- 46:31Speaker 4: to the question of like of of handling all that
- 46:34Speaker 4: in the perspective of it is. I think for me,
- 46:37Speaker 4: like like it could you don't it could end next year.
- 46:41Speaker 4: You don't really know like how it all is gonna go,
- 46:44Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? And so like for me,
- 46:46Speaker 4: I just I don't know. I'm just so again, like
- 46:50Speaker 4: I always I tell myself a lot, like dude, you're
- 46:53Speaker 4: the GM of the Raiders, you know what I mean,
- 46:55Speaker 4: Like you were a guidance counselor, like keep things in perspective,
- 46:58Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? Like keep it level
- 47:00Speaker 4: and just enjoy the moment. And I try to not.
- 47:03Speaker 4: And I think because of that mindset, I don't let it.
- 47:06Speaker 4: I don't have I don't let decisions My decisions aren't
- 47:10Speaker 4: driven by like just trying to stay alive, do you
- 47:13Speaker 4: know what I mean? Like the fact that I got
- 47:15Speaker 4: to this position and I have this job is like
- 47:18Speaker 4: we talked about, it's kind of wild to think compared
- 47:21Speaker 4: to where we were in two thousand and eight. So
- 47:23Speaker 4: I don't let fear or like the fear of failure,
- 47:27Speaker 4: the fear of failure being fired like drive decisions. I'm
- 47:29Speaker 4: just we're gonna just we're gonna swing, and we also
- 47:33Speaker 4: have a vision of how we want to do things,
- 47:35Speaker 4: and we're just gonna go and and I believe that
- 47:37Speaker 4: it's gonna work, do you know what I mean? Obviously
- 47:39Speaker 4: that's what That's why I'm gonna do things the way
- 47:41Speaker 4: that I do. I believe we're gonna win here. I
- 47:43Speaker 4: believe that we're gonna build something that's going to be
- 47:46Speaker 4: compete for championships and you know, ultimately, you know, get
- 47:51Speaker 4: us to where we want to go and and for
- 47:53Speaker 4: the Raiders to be a team that's everybody looks at
- 47:55Speaker 4: and says like like like the Green Bay Packers and
- 47:58Speaker 4: the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers, like they're always
- 48:00Speaker 4: kind of around, you know what I mean, they may
- 48:03Speaker 4: have a down year here or there, but when you
- 48:04Speaker 4: look at the longevity of those teams, and there's more
- 48:07Speaker 4: that I can name besides those teams. Tho are the
- 48:08Speaker 4: ones that popped up in my head. Patriots being another one,
- 48:12Speaker 4: Like they're always they're always kind of around and and
- 48:15Speaker 4: I believe we're gonna get there, uh doing it the
- 48:19Speaker 4: way that we're gonna the way that we want to
- 48:21Speaker 4: do it. But I don't I'm not gonna do anything
- 48:23Speaker 4: and and divert for that because I'm like scared of
- 48:26Speaker 4: something or.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Trying to like keep keep you know, keep your job here.
- 48:29Speaker 4: I'm gonna buy two more years if we do this
- 48:31Speaker 4: or that, Like I just that's not how I'm wired.
- 48:33Speaker 4: I'm not going to go down like that.
- 48:35Speaker 2: What are some of those new challenges that you're learning
- 48:37Speaker 2: of being a GM, because, like you said, you've witnessed
- 48:40Speaker 2: some of the guys before you or that you worked
- 48:42Speaker 2: under and be like, you know, when I get to
- 48:44Speaker 2: run out, I'm going to necessarily do it like that.
- 48:45Speaker 1: But ultimately, I don't know what.
- 48:47Speaker 2: I don't know what are some of those things you're
- 48:49Speaker 2: learning through your first year being a GM.
- 48:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I think though like the one thing is like
- 48:54Speaker 4: just prioritizing tasks. And I've said this before in other interviews,
- 48:58Speaker 4: but it's like real, like the amount of things you
- 49:00Speaker 4: can get distracted by that aren't football related. Whether it's
- 49:05Speaker 4: whether it's something that's going on with the fields or
- 49:07Speaker 4: meals or you know, the player development wants to you
- 49:12Speaker 4: know meet, or you know, maybe it's an outside sponsorship
- 49:17Speaker 4: thing that's going on. Like there's a lot of things
- 49:19Speaker 4: that are going on outside. And then it's just the
- 49:21Speaker 4: the scouting stuff too, whether it's okay, pro scouting versus
- 49:25Speaker 4: college scouting, versus watching guys on the practice squad versus
- 49:28Speaker 4: there's all these you know, guys that are on the street.
- 49:32Speaker 4: You have to figure out like what's important now, Like
- 49:36Speaker 4: what is really important now? What do you need to
- 49:38Speaker 4: do now? And just mastering that is tough. You can
- 49:41Speaker 4: kind of like I sometimes you could go down a
- 49:43Speaker 4: path and be like wait a minute, like I'm going
- 49:45Speaker 4: down this hole, but like this other thing is actually
- 49:47Speaker 4: more pressing. I need to go I should be doing that.
- 49:51Speaker 4: And you've kind of learned like how to prioritize things.
- 49:53Speaker 4: But that's a real challenge, is just trying to figure
- 49:55Speaker 4: out like what's important now, because it all can feel
- 49:58Speaker 4: important now, you know what I mean, especially your first
- 50:01Speaker 4: year on the job. So that's definitely a challenge. I
- 50:06Speaker 4: would say that, you know, the other thing that's you
- 50:09Speaker 4: kind of kind of navigating things like that is like
- 50:12Speaker 4: giving everybody in the building the personal time that they need.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Like you can easily feel like every all this all
- 50:18Speaker 4: this shit's going on. You have to take care of
- 50:20Speaker 4: all that you have, all these different things. I have
- 50:21Speaker 4: a list it right now in my computer of it's
- 50:23Speaker 4: the off season, forty things that I need to get done.
- 50:28Speaker 4: And as a leader, though, like you also have to
- 50:31Speaker 4: work to create personal relationships with people in the building,
- 50:34Speaker 4: your other scouts. Like I could easily close my door
- 50:37Speaker 4: and not talk to anybody for months and just work,
- 50:40Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? But like, you know,
- 50:42Speaker 4: creating a relationship with the guys in the strength and
- 50:43Speaker 4: conditioning department, or creating like the guys in the equipment room,
- 50:47Speaker 4: like everybody, you need to you need to give everybody
- 50:50Speaker 4: your time to a degree to build camaraderie, to build
- 50:53Speaker 4: to build that culture where everybody's pulling in the right direction.
- 50:58Speaker 4: You have to invest in in you know, in personal relationship.
- 51:01Speaker 4: You have to invest in other people's growth. I have
- 51:03Speaker 4: to take time and teach the younger scouts that are
- 51:06Speaker 4: scouting assistance some of the philosophies and the way that
- 51:08Speaker 4: I want things done. And other people can teach them too,
- 51:11Speaker 4: but it you know, it means more if I'm teaching them.
- 51:14Speaker 4: And so finding time to build and invest those all
- 51:21Speaker 4: those other relationships when they're not it's not football oriented,
- 51:24Speaker 4: it's just personal stuff. That's a huge challenge is finding
- 51:27Speaker 4: the time to do that. But it's one of the
- 51:28Speaker 4: most important things at the same time.
- 51:31Speaker 6: Uh, taking him back for a second to when you're
- 51:32Speaker 6: with the Patriots, like that is a well oiled machine,
- 51:35Speaker 6: and it's a uniquely done machine too. With Belichick really
- 51:38Speaker 6: has free rein to do whatever you want. He like
- 51:40Speaker 6: wears a lot of hats in that building. When you
- 51:43Speaker 6: get the call and you say, all right, you're gonna
- 51:44Speaker 6: become the GM of the Raiders and you walk away
- 51:46Speaker 6: from a culture that is arguably one of the best
- 51:49Speaker 6: cultures in the NFL and you go here, like, what
- 51:51Speaker 6: are the first things you do to check off? Like
- 51:54Speaker 6: this is how I want to set the foundation and
- 51:56Speaker 6: this is what we need to work on Like what
- 51:57Speaker 6: did you see? It was like a some that the
- 51:59Speaker 6: Raiders really need to fix when you came into Vegas. Yeah,
- 52:03Speaker 6: this is a unique, right, It's like the first couple
- 52:05Speaker 6: of years, you're like they're in a new location, they
- 52:08Speaker 6: have there, whether they're like they haven't really been in
- 52:10Speaker 6: it like those other teams you said, but they're the Raiders.
- 52:13Speaker 4: Everyone knows who the Raiders are.
- 52:15Speaker 6: You're talking about when you were a kid, Like being
- 52:16Speaker 6: a Raiders fan is cool, even when they're not winning.
- 52:18Speaker 4: It's just cool to be a Raiders fan. Yes, so you're.
- 52:21Speaker 6: Walking into not necessarily historically successful franchise, but you're walking
- 52:25Speaker 6: to a franchise that everybody knows about. And there's you're
- 52:27Speaker 6: you're the top guy. Now you're number one.
- 52:30Speaker 4: I would say two things. I would say one thing
- 52:32Speaker 4: that was unique about the Raiders is, and you were
- 52:35Speaker 4: around a little bit, there was a lot of turmoil
- 52:37Speaker 4: that they had been through, a lot of you know,
- 52:40Speaker 4: a lot of especially last year, Yeah, a lot of
- 52:43Speaker 4: a lot, a lot and and last year then and
- 52:46Speaker 4: moving the team from Oakland. There's just a lot of
- 52:48Speaker 4: like kind of the last I don't know, maybe like
- 52:50Speaker 4: three or four years.
- 52:51Speaker 2: A lot of in when a ten year contract with
- 52:54Speaker 2: Gruden correct if they were investing long term, like.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Looking to build this thing, and it kind of yeah,
- 52:59Speaker 1: a lot of.
- 52:59Speaker 4: Kind of left the center alone. And so I think
- 53:03Speaker 4: there was a need organizationally for like to build like
- 53:08Speaker 4: to quickly build some stability, do you know what I mean?
- 53:12Speaker 4: And I think like, so there was this need for
- 53:17Speaker 4: Josh and I think specifically to work on creating a
- 53:19Speaker 4: lot of relationships and like investing again going back to
- 53:22Speaker 4: the relationship piece, but investing personal time and getting to
- 53:25Speaker 4: know people. And what we didn't do when we went
- 53:27Speaker 4: in there is we didn't go in there and drop
- 53:29Speaker 4: a bomb and fire everybody, because that does happen, right
- 53:32Speaker 4: a new coach and a new GM comes by and
- 53:33Speaker 4: they just wipe out everybody. We tried to really take
- 53:36Speaker 4: the time and get to know a lot of the
- 53:38Speaker 4: people that had been there, because a lot of the people,
- 53:40Speaker 4: as you know, had been there not just like four
- 53:41Speaker 4: or five years. There's people that been there fifteen, twenty years.
- 53:45Speaker 4: And so we went in there and got to know
- 53:48Speaker 4: a lot of the people. And what we figured out
- 53:49Speaker 4: is there was a lot of good people there, and
- 53:51Speaker 4: so we invested and kept a lot of those people,
- 53:54Speaker 4: and so I think the one thing was just there
- 53:57Speaker 4: was we had to the best way to say it
- 54:01Speaker 4: is like we had to earn their trust and respect
- 54:04Speaker 4: as much as they needed to earn ours. But I
- 54:06Speaker 4: think that was needed because of all like kind of
- 54:08Speaker 4: the upheaval and things like that, and so trying to
- 54:10Speaker 4: build some consistency with relationships was one. On the scouting side,
- 54:15Speaker 4: I would say from the Patriots, and again, this isn't
- 54:19Speaker 4: this isn't a knock. Everybody has different ways that they
- 54:21Speaker 4: do things. The thing with the Patriots from a scouting
- 54:24Speaker 4: is it's super detailed, no stone left them turned, character,
- 54:29Speaker 4: background research, understanding the role for the player. Like when
- 54:34Speaker 4: I say we're gonna bring in Will Compton, it's not
- 54:36Speaker 4: just like, Okay, we're gonna bring in Will Compton to
- 54:38Speaker 4: play linebacker. It's like, we're gonna bring in Will Compton.
- 54:40Speaker 4: He's gonna get to the game on fourth down. He's
- 54:42Speaker 4: gonna be a three to four phase player in the
- 54:44Speaker 4: kicking game. So you're gonna be there every week. He's
- 54:46Speaker 4: gonna be the fifth linebacker. As the fifth linebacker, he's
- 54:49Speaker 4: gonna be a first and second down guy. He's not
- 54:51Speaker 4: gonna play in sub like that kind of communication and
- 54:54Speaker 4: that specific, Like being that specific and detailed was something
- 54:58Speaker 4: new for be new for a lot of places, but
- 55:01Speaker 4: it was new for our scouting department. Are talking our
- 55:04Speaker 4: language the like again the speciificity of the role and
- 55:09Speaker 4: then the detail of what we want in terms of background,
- 55:11Speaker 4: research and character because for us, like the culture fit
- 55:15Speaker 4: like it's the yeah, the skill set is this, but
- 55:17Speaker 4: how do they fit culturally? What are they going to
- 55:19Speaker 4: bring to the room in terms of football intelligence? What
- 55:22Speaker 4: are they going to bring to the room in terms
- 55:23Speaker 4: of like again like the personal and social aspect, how
- 55:26Speaker 4: are they going to fit in the room, and how
- 55:27Speaker 4: is their room going to react to them? Like those
- 55:29Speaker 4: are all conversations we have and we're going to add
- 55:31Speaker 4: just one player, and so I think that was a
- 55:33Speaker 4: little bit different from what they've done in the past.
- 55:36Speaker 4: And so those were two things. I mean, I could
- 55:37Speaker 4: go on and on, but those were two things that
- 55:39Speaker 4: I think were needed and that we kind of one
- 55:42Speaker 4: that were needed and then that I took from New
- 55:44Speaker 4: England and brought here.
- 55:46Speaker 6: It seems like you know a lot about Will Compton,
- 55:48Speaker 6: Like what's the scouting report on Will Compton.
- 55:50Speaker 2: Yeah, what happened. Hey, that's funny too. You brought that
- 55:52Speaker 2: up when we met in Tennessee. You're like, hey, last week,
- 55:54Speaker 2: I was actually thinking about the potential of bringing you
- 55:57Speaker 2: in and what's the deal.
- 55:58Speaker 1: Why can't we get play on that?
- 55:59Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 56:00Speaker 1: Why can we get playoff?
- 56:01Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 56:03Speaker 1: Games?
- 56:03Speaker 4: It was cool.
- 56:04Speaker 1: He seeks me out. He said, Hey, Dans, I'm the
- 56:06Speaker 1: GM with the Raiders.
- 56:06Speaker 2: I'm just thinking, like, this is Taylor's guidance counselor from Yeah,
- 56:10Speaker 2: you know, nice to meet you, and we said all
- 56:12Speaker 2: the Steven joked a little bit. You know, I'm like, hey,
- 56:13Speaker 2: you're t I started doing a punt sit in front
- 56:15Speaker 2: of my mike.
- 56:16Speaker 4: Get you, I get you?
- 56:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I get you a try out? Right now? What
- 56:18Speaker 1: do you want to see? And we're laughing.
- 56:20Speaker 4: This the scouting report on Will Lunch pale guy. Hold yeah,
- 56:24Speaker 4: but hold on, let me throw I got I got.
- 56:28Speaker 6: You were with the Patriots in two thousand. When'd you
- 56:31Speaker 6: come out to in thirteen thirteen?
- 56:33Speaker 4: That was my first year. Okay, do you remember Will
- 56:35Speaker 4: Compton twenty thirteen?
- 56:36Speaker 1: I don't.
- 56:37Speaker 4: That's okay, I don't.
- 56:38Speaker 6: He was under Yeah, that's okay.
- 56:40Speaker 4: And I wasn't on the I wasn't on the college
- 56:41Speaker 4: scouting side either. I was a pro scout at the time.
- 56:43Speaker 4: Sean McVay would have remembered.
- 56:45Speaker 8: Seein he has a much better memory.
- 56:48Speaker 6: So let's go Will Compton when there was more tread
- 56:53Speaker 6: on the tires.
- 56:54Speaker 4: Let's say, yeah, four years ago, yep, hard nosed. Oh,
- 57:00Speaker 4: instinctive in terms of reading blocking patterns, like you know,
- 57:03Speaker 4: the pooler goes, Will's gone, he's off the spot and
- 57:06Speaker 4: he's coming downhill. Undersized, but we'll take yep.
- 57:13Speaker 8: It's true, limited athletically undersized.
- 57:18Speaker 4: But what we always look forward does he have a
- 57:20Speaker 4: willingness to take on like Will wasn't scared to go
- 57:22Speaker 4: down and put his face mask on somebody. You know.
- 57:25Speaker 4: Not the longest guy in terms of arm length here
- 57:28Speaker 4: we're not talking about thirty four inch arms, you know
- 57:30Speaker 4: what I mean.
- 57:31Speaker 1: We saw myself at the arm and.
- 57:33Speaker 4: You know so. But so there there was you know, physicality,
- 57:36Speaker 4: but there was a tendency to get caught up on
- 57:38Speaker 4: some blocks. Yeah, you know, so he he had to
- 57:40Speaker 4: win with his instincts, being able to read kind of
- 57:43Speaker 4: the read the play, read the formation, get off the
- 57:45Speaker 4: spot quick short airy quickness was not bad with this guy.
- 57:48Speaker 4: Now in a short space. I'm not talking about going,
- 57:52Speaker 4: but he had some short, short area quickness and explosiveness
- 57:55Speaker 4: to beat blockers at the point, get downhill, good rap tackler,
- 57:58Speaker 4: get guys to the ground. You want him on first
- 58:00Speaker 4: and second down. Didn't really see a big role on
- 58:02Speaker 4: third down in terms of getting in space and really covering.
- 58:05Speaker 4: He'd use his instincts in zone to be able to
- 58:08Speaker 4: get in the windows and squeeze on guys and take
- 58:10Speaker 4: guys out of the play. So that was kind of
- 58:12Speaker 4: the passing side of him. And then on the kicking game,
- 58:16Speaker 4: hell on, hell on wheelsbody instinctive, you know, But the
- 58:25Speaker 4: college character, that's all the adjective. Lunch pale guy. You
- 58:28Speaker 4: know you're gonna love him in the room, you know, strength, strength, strength,
- 58:33Speaker 4: Staff loves this guy, date your daughter type. You know.
- 58:38Speaker 4: I don't know about that one, but I'm just telling
- 58:42Speaker 4: you what they said. You know it's gonna be. He's
- 58:45Speaker 4: gonna be every coach's dream, Gonna work hard, give you
- 58:48Speaker 4: everything you got, you know, bring guys along with them.
- 58:51Speaker 4: So he had all the intangibles to back to this year,
- 58:54Speaker 4: there was a threshold it's playoff Willie, you know what
- 58:56Speaker 4: I mean? So you you don't want to squeeze the
- 58:58Speaker 4: juice too early, you know what I'm saying. So we
- 59:02Speaker 4: we you did say what our record was, do you
- 59:04Speaker 4: know what I mean? And so we were kind of
- 59:06Speaker 4: always fighting uphill we started off oh and three, and
- 59:09Speaker 4: so we were kind of when we won three or
- 59:11Speaker 4: four in a row, and so like the Willie meters
- 59:13Speaker 4: started going a little bit, you know, But then we
- 59:16Speaker 4: lost a couple of close ones and it was less
- 59:18Speaker 4: like if I'm gonna bring we're gonna bring playoff Willy in.
- 59:21Speaker 4: It's gotta be you're bringing him into punch at home
- 59:25Speaker 4: to take it over.
- 59:25Speaker 1: Is that legit?
- 59:26Speaker 4: Striking?
- 59:27Speaker 1: Is that legit?
- 59:28Speaker 6: That's how I feel when you when you were the boss.
- 59:31Speaker 2: I'm just saying when we were in Tennessee and you
- 59:32Speaker 2: were like, hey, last week, I was thinking about is
- 59:34Speaker 2: that legit?
- 59:34Speaker 1: You're like taking into account where we could be at.
- 59:37Speaker 4: One hundred percent with you in particular, I appreciate that.
- 59:41Speaker 4: I feel.
- 59:44Speaker 6: Everything the narrative you've written for yourself via the bird.
- 59:47Speaker 6: I actually just come to fruition.
- 59:49Speaker 2: I appreciated his breakdown too, just because like he said
- 59:51Speaker 2: some of the things that like, you know, you don't
- 59:54Speaker 2: know necessarily, like when he says rap tackler, like not
- 59:56Speaker 2: a thumper. He talks about the short, short area of stuff.
- 59:58Speaker 2: You talked about the third down stuff, and I I
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: feel like that is all. Yeah, I feel like he
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: nails me better than I appreciate it.
- 1:00:07Speaker 6: Greater nation should be happy. You hold on. I want
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: to make you guys were legit was there a legitic
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: and there was a legit consideration to bring him.
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: In and and and because of like his just talking
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: to guys like Max and guys that were with him
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: the year before and and and again this is just
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: just what they said, like the he he he brings
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: a level of excitement, a level of juice, a level
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: of energy to practice lightheartedness, you know. And and and
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: I think guys appreciate that, you know what I mean.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: And so and he's consistent with it from what they said.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: And so, Yeah, to bring somebody that's gonna bring positive energy,
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: that's going to take on any role that you're willing
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: to give him, that's gonna bust their asset practice, that's
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: gonna bring good vibes like good Yeah, that was it.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: I know, I'm like sitting there, you know, you're smiling
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: a little.
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: Yeah, give me, let's turn the page. What I did
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: want to well, let's turn the page to the negative category.
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: I want to hear the bad. I want to hear
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: the bad about Will Compton well or your negative shots.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: Well, the bad would be well, the bad would be
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: first and second down only not gonna really have a
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: roll on third down because the coverage stuff isn't good enough,
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: doesn't have enough speed to like matching man and run
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: with tight run with Darren Waller down the seam and
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: things of that nature.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I like them up every day and practice. But go ahead.
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: I did mention the arm length. Yeah, it's you know,
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: so there's gonna be a tendency to get caught on
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: some blocks, big long, physical offensive lineman, like you know,
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: he's gonna have to come down and hit you with
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: his face or beat you with quickness, and so there's
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: gonna be times where he just gets locked up because
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: he doesn't have that arm length. Really, that's about it.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not bad.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: I know, like when I when I think it was
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: sixteen or seventeen, when Zach Brown had came in and
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: then I got demoted to like the number three guy.
- 1:01:57Speaker 7: Uh.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: When Kirk Aalvadayce sat out with me, it was more
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: of like when deciding between like myself and Mason Foster,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: it was more of like Mason could get out of
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: the consensus in the scouting department. Mason could get out
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: of more bad situations than I could. I usually had
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: to be right the majority of the time to make
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: all the plays I needed to make. In my head,
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: I'm thinking, well, I am, I'm gonna be right the
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: majority of the time.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: But that's usually like the consensus is he's.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Gotta, he's gotta, you know, guess right, I guess the
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: majority of time because it's hard to get out of
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: bad situations because of all the limited all the limited
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: ceiling stuff that is placed on the player. Yeah, white short,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: but always let me know I had short arms. Will
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: we're not putting you on punt return like you're not
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: gonna be able to get your arms on.
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: Guys, so your arms aren't exceptionally long.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Yeah, here we go, exceptional And I felt those long
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: terms a couple of weeks ago. But even when you
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: had those long arms, I had to like the feet
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: I had, like the feet, hands, just to try to
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: get inside.
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: I know that I had you exceptional athlete though, and
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: I will say this. I will say this about about
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: Taylor luwan Is here we go. He came to Chaparral
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: his senior year. Now, this guy was playing nose tackle
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: at Cactus Shadows. I don't even know if they put
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: him on the offensive line at the time.
- 1:03:14Speaker 6: Side note, Yeah, my sophomore year, I would move up
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: to varsity a big deal, and they put me a
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: left tackle. Tray Stevens got three sacks in a row
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: on me. I couldn't get in on my stands, so
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: they put him back tackle.
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: But when we when we had when we brought Taylor
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: in and we moved him to left tackle, and we
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: actually had an ex offense and an NFL coach, Rod Hemanek,
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: who had retired out in Scottsdale. He used to coach
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: for the New England Patriots. He happens just to be
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: coaching all line at Chaparo when Taylor comes in, so
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: never played O line. He comes in, he has an
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: NFL coach. But I would say he came in the spring.
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: By the time we got to October one, we knew
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: he was going to be a major Division one guy.
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: Because in the spring, we had a guy named Craig
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: Row who had about twenty three Division one offers.
- 1:03:59Speaker 6: Yeah, he was already like under armor all America.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what he essentually.
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: Crazy reason why I transferred because I knew all these
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: coaches were going to come in. I was, and my
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: dad made me transfers, like the coaches are going to
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: see you and think bank for him, we can do
- 1:04:11Speaker 6: something with it.
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: And he just came in and this guy had like
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: twenty offers before. But when we got to October, this
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: is no, I've never told you this. Me and Charlie Ragel,
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: who's now at Arizona State, he said, this guy's going
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: to play in the NFL.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Nice. What's what's taylor scouting report?
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: Well, I mean, this guy's a first round pick, so
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: there's a.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Lot of say Taylor, Yeah, yeah, he's Taylor three years ago.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Well let's do Taylor like if Taylor was a free
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: agent and he was you were doing it.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: There's a scouting board on Taylor right now at thirty
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: years old.
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: Thirty one years old, he's five pounds.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: No, I'm talking like you're you're a player. Taylor is
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: the question.
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: Taylor's overall scouting report. To be honest with you, it
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: stayed pretty consistent since the time he's been in the league. Now,
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: when he first got in, his technique wasn't very good,
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: and so he improved a lot. For a technical standpoint,
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: but Taylor exceptional athlete for his size. I mean, this
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: guy is an ex I know, we don't want to
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: blow up his head too vague.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: I need this, but it's.
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: Play a rare, rare athlete for his size, and so
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: like all like the ability to like the lateral agility,
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: the speed to kick and get to the I'm using
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: scouting terms now, but to get to the junction point.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: To junction point is where the tackle and the you know,
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: the that that line of demarcation where he either can
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: turn the corner and get to the quarterback or the
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: tackle wins to that point. Like he had tremendous speed,
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: you know in his kick. The ability to redirect laterally,
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: like you know, guy comes, the guy presses your outside shoulder,
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: he tries to beat you across his face. The ability,
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: the ability to react and slide and stay in front,
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: unique ability to play in the screen game pull, run, get,
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: to the second level because of how athletic he was
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: was unique. And I think the thing that Taylor did
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: as a left tackle but not a lot of left
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: tackles is the nastiness that he played with. Because you
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: like back in the day when I came up, like
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: the run blockers all played right tackle and then like
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: the vanesse kind of softer guys played left tackle. But
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: Taylor really, like as a run blocker, even though he
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: wasn't the most powerful guy, like he was trying to
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: like demolish people, and so he brought that, like that
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: physical kind of right tackle mentality as a run blocker,
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: he brought it to left tackle. And I think that's
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: what a lot of people were attracted by. He has
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: this like tenacity and this nastiness, but he's this athletic, pretty,
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: you know, pretty guy in terms of his skill set,
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: and so that was all unique and that was all
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: what made him a first round draft pick. And he
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: had all that in high school too. I mean, in practice,
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: this guy was an asshole. He bes blocking you know,
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: little Timmy over you know, forty yards the opposite way,
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: and like burying guys on the track, and like even
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: in games, I mean he would drive it. We would
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: we would be ripping his butt on the sideline because
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: it was like the fourth fifteen yard penalty because our
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: running back broke it for seventy yards and he's driving
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: the guy the other way thirty yards. Dwayne Garrett. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: And so so it's all the positive, I'd say the
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: negative had always probably been a little bit like if
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: you were going to win, it was being able to
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: get underneath his pads and drive him into the pocket
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: with power, like to be able to sit and anchor,
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: I would say was probably the more inconsistent part of
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: his game, especially early on. I think he got stronger
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: and and he could always bend and sink, But it
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: was the strength that I think developed from like your
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: beginning of your career to like that middle and end
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: of your career you were able to improve, you know,
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: with your anchor. And then I would say, from the
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: counseling piece, going to get psychological.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Where you kind of know him a little differently in yeah.
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: Like he can get into his own head a little bit.
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: And so I think like the like we talked about,
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: like Chandler Jones, you're free, You're you, This is a
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: free space to speak.
- 1:08:06Speaker 6: I want to hear it.
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: I want to hear this. Yeah, so I think like
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: Taylor can do some negative self talk and kind of
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: get him in a space where like he's not positive
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: with himself, and so like things could snowball a little bit,
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: and and one bad play could turn into two bad plays.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: And I think, like, I think you've always had a
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: little bit.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Of that.
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: And and and so I think that was like, again,
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: I don't know, I haven't been around him for a
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: lot for a lot of years, but I think like
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: that was one thing that he's anchor and then just
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: not letting a bad, bad series or a bad play
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: snowball because I know he's on the sideline telling himself
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: like not good things about himself.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: I'll tell you what.
- 1:08:46Speaker 6: That's pretty smart on Yeah, an expert, You are an expert.
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: I think the thing that the negative self talk thing
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: is definitely something you all like. That's like a real
- 1:08:56Speaker 6: bad negative because the whole name of the game, especially
- 1:08:59Speaker 6: when you're player, is hey move on like short memory,
- 1:09:02Speaker 6: short memory memory, and you would usually somebody else mess
- 1:09:05Speaker 6: up you like man short memory, don't worry about it.
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: But if I had a bad practice, I would would
- 1:09:10Speaker 6: not sleep the next day that night because I'm thinking, fuck,
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: I had a bad practice. But if this happens with
- 1:09:14Speaker 6: that happens, that's pretty spot on.
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:16Speaker 6: And injury, yep, that's also. I mean, you can't have
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: two a cls in three years. No, it's a bad deal.
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: That's a bad deal. Yeah, that's a bad deal. But
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: like that same thing that drives you that that negative
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: self talk is a double edged sword because it also
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: is what drives you to be successful.
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: Yeah, there is, you know what I mean. It allows
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: you to tell yourself whatever story you need to hear
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: to regain a chip on your shoulder.
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: Correct. Yeah, so so yeah, that's my scotch.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: I think this is I think this is sick.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: I feel like everything I'm actually truly enjoying my Yeah,
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: Like I feel like a lot of guys was sitting
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: there at the cafeteria and like whether decisions get made
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: or not, and you talk about free agents coming in,
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: draft picks having blah blah blah blah blah. Like you know,
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: I'm a guy every year who would sit and watch
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: the draft differently than I've to express to you, what's
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: for me watching the draft? You're like hoping you guys
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: don't get a fucking linebacker that's going to be in
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: the top three rounds or something like that, where it's
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: like I sit in my head, I'm like, man, I
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: wonder what my fucking report is up there, you know
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: what I mean? And we're literally getting to hear it
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: from a GM. We're getting to sit with the GM
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: and kind of like learn, like, hey, what was on.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: The fucking cheets? What would get talked about?
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: You know, it would be a cool segment to do,
- 1:10:17Speaker 6: would get like when we have NFL players on, like,
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: have Zig and his personnel send us the scattering port
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: of that guy and have him read his own scattering
- 1:10:25Speaker 6: port because I I saw a scattering port of my
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: own from like an Eagles GM like a while back
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: that CA sent me and it was like basically what
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: you said from a pros and constandpoint, but there was
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: one categories like personality and it was like quirky Unique
- 1:10:40Speaker 6: has a two uh has a two seater bike that
- 1:10:42Speaker 6: drives by himself. Like it was a bunch of random
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: like funny shit.
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: The mustache tattoo.
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: Yeah, the mustache tattoo, the right hand man, like a
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: whole bunch of stuff like I just thought, like, man,
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: this would be so fucking funny if we got to
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: sit with like Max Crosby.
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: But here's your scattering report. Yeah, like he's white guy
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: with blake Ey tattoos. Uh, you got to fade bro
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: he does.
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: That's not a racist thing, like white dudes, Celtic crossing
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: the shoulder, tribal all that is a standard textbook white
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: guy tattoo, initials in the back of the arm, black
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: guy tattoo very much.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: So yeah, there's nothing. That's just what you watch.
- 1:11:20Speaker 6: Yes, prayer hands lying on the chest like those are
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: all like what you see in the lower room.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: You just play that, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: I think it'd be hilarious to see dude, dude scattering.
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: Were we in Denvery and New England where we would
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: hire guys that played in the league like we would
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: or had been like prospects in the league before we
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: hired him, their their scouting reports. We'd just take them
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: off because some of them were rejects, like not good
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: enough to play in the league. Too slow you want
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: to be to you know, you don't want to have
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: a guy coming in every day in his morale he's
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: going on and looking at his scouting report every day.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Yeah bad, you thought, Yeah.
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: Yeah, you were you a Darren Moodie at all in Denver?
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: I was, and and and I got this is funny
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: about Darren. So Darren's the assistant GM in Denver.
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: Now Darren also a chapero gun. He played wide receiver.
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: He was a chapero ground. He was on our coaching
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: staff at chapperal Brother. Oh okay, think of but probably
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: a little more handsome little dime in piece. It was
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: Rob's guide, his counselor too. Yeah, I can little bit.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: So Darren.
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: I actually got Darren his recommended Darren for his first
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: interview in Denver. So he came there when we got there.
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: The year before, Darren was in the league, still playing
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: for the Cardinals, and I had my pre season report
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: and I rejected him. Oh really yeah, not good enough
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: to play in the league. Tell him that, ever, I
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: think he knew. Yeah, he eventually found that out. I
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: tried to keep it on the download, you know, for
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: a little while. Yeah, for a second or so, not
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: personally it is so yeah, So he's he's an example
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: of a guy that was I rejected him for the
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: league in terms of player, but recommended him for a
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: job in scouting, so I knew there was some talent there.
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: Can you talk about balancing the business and personal like
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: because you're you know, you're in a business where it's
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: performance based, literally every day you're graded, you're all of
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: that stuff.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: You have to do business as businesses, but.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: Also you're in a business where you have to you
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: were speaking to having the personal relationships building those talk
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: about balancing those two as a GM.
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's it's hard because the personal in the business,
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: it's it's really it is intertwined, you know, because I
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: can tell someone hey, like we were talking about, I
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: can tell someone when we're going to release them, Hey,
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: I mean this is this is business because for me
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: it is, but it's personal for them because I just
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: told them one that they're fired too. They got to
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: go home and tell their family that they've been let go.
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: They got to think about where they're going to move,
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: what are they going to do with their kids? Their
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: kids are in school? Are we pulling them out now?
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: And because it so it becomes very personal, and so
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: it is difficult. It is difficult, and I do like
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: feel there's you know, when you're part of a team,
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: and I do feel like I do want to create
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: personal relationships with the players because we're all on the
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: same team. You know, we're asking a lot of them too,
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: and I think it's important for them to feel like
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: that because I am. I'm invested in their success. I
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: want to see them succeed, and so I want to
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: create a personal relationship because of that. And and so.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: But you know, the scouting side of things, like you
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: said about like looking at the draft, like I'm trying
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: to find the next whoever else, Right, Ultimately, I'm trying
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: to find guys that are gonna, you know, replace will come. Right.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: It's not like you're wanting to replace me because you
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: dislike me. You're you're trying to that's the name. You're
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: trying to get better, trying to get.
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: Better, you know what I mean. And so there's that,
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: So there there's a direct conflict there, right, And so
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: what I try to do is just be really upfront
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: and honest with players whenever I deal with them, Give
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: them positive feedback, give them critical feedback, if that's what
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: you know. If they're telling me, hey, what do you think,
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: I'm going to tell them what I think. On the
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: positive side in the business side, and I think so
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: because I'm going to give you positive feedback and critical feedback.
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: I don't ever try to sugarcoat it where it's all positive,
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: all positive, all positive. Then you're sitting down, I'm releasing you, right,
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And so I just try
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: to keep it as honest and upfront and again invest
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: in the personal side, be positive, treat you like I
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: would treat anybody else. But also there's like that side
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: of it where it is like again like there's that
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: critical piece. Hey, you need to get better at A
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: B and C. We need to see you get better
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: at A B and C. If you can't get better
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: at A B and C, I'm looking for somebody else.
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: And I just think, like I try to just be
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: upfront about that's the deal. That's what I'm trying to do,
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? And that's the best
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: I can do, you know, to try to keep it
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: upfront and honest and keep the relationship, I guess as
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: pure as it can be. Understanding that, like I'm trying
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: to my job is to find someone that's ultimately better
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: than you, and your job is to prove to me
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: that you're better than everybody else. Like Edelman when we
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: were in New England, Julian would always find me like
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: sometime in March, you know, before the draft, and just
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: let me know, like, hey, just so you know, you're like,
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: you're not finding in anybody that's going to be fucking
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: better than me. And he come up and look me
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: in the face and say that, just so you know
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: you're not finding anybody better there, and how your relationship
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: is obviously good with him, great with him, and it's
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: still great with him. He's probably one of the people
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: that I'm closest with that is that's been a player
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: in the league that's not a player in the league anymore.
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: But like he had that attitude. He understood what my
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: job was. But he's like, you're I'm not I'm gonna
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: make it very difficult on you, and I'm gonna do
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: everything in my power so you don't find somebody that's
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: better than me. But that's that's the job, you know,
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: that's the business, and it's you know, it's brutal in
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: that way.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Would have been a couple of your harder situations.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: Whereas whereas whether it's been cutting a player, trading a player,
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: you know where it's like, you know, if you were
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: going to trade me, are you are not going to
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: trade me but looking to trade me?
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Are you?
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: You're probably not seeking to tell me like, hey, we're
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: looking to trade you.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: But how how have you navigated?
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Would have been a couple of your harder situations without
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: like naming players unless you did want to name them.
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: Well, I'll name one just because it was like a
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: frost The first player that the first player that I
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: was ever asked to release in Denver was Stokely wide Receiver.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: Oh really yeah?
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: And he was he was like he'd always been kind
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: of a fixture he was with the Colts and then
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: he was Denver and like he was kind of he
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: was the man, you know what I mean, Like he
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: was a fixture with the Broncos and and you know,
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: really well liked and things like that. And when he
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: came to Denver, he was towards the end of his career.
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: But I knew I knew him as a fan, you
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: know what I mean. Like again, I didn't get in
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: the NFL. My first year in the NFL as a
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: sky assistant was like I was thirty two. I was
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: like Billy Madison. I was like everybody else was like
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: twenty four.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: And twenty three years old.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: I'm the old guy, you know, as a scouting assistant.
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: But having to do that is someone that I had
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: watched as a fan and saw his career and he's like,
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: you know, scrappy slot receiver that you know, made like
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: made a career in the NFL. And to have to
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: go do that, that was really hard because I was
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: this It was the first time I had to do it,
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: and it was a guy that I had admired and
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: looked up to his career and it was like, you know,
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: you just you it, you felt it, you know what
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: I mean. And so that was that was a difficult
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: one to do. And you know, the stuff with the
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: trade stuff is always always difficult because you get to
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: the trade deadline, there's all these there's guys on the
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: team and their names out on the trade block and
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: things like that, and I've had players come to me
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: and you know, ask me, hey, what's the deal?
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, I can I've been seeing unfortunately not from
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: anybody in the building, but on probably social media. I
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: could be on the trade block or my agent.
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: Yeah, And so those are awkward situations, and and like
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: you said, there's there's a balance there too, you because
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: like how is someone going to respond if you say, yeah,
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: I'm gonna try Yeah, I'm trying to trade you. Yeah,
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: you know, you can go one of two ways. You
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: can go one of two ways, and there's dramatic different ways. Yeah. Well,
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: and what if you don't get it done? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: you know what I mean. And so those are those
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: ones are tough to navigate because you you I don't
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: ever want to lie to somebody and be dishonest, you know,
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: And and at the same time, you don't want to
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: you know, you don't want to say something that's gonna
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: you know, bring some like negative wedge in between you
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: and the player too. So those are always ones that
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: are hard to navigate. And and you know, I just
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: again I don't won't be specific, but in certain instances
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: I've said, like you know, like hey, like if if
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: someone you know, this is this is a business, and
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: if someone comes and offers something that I think is
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: going to help the football team, you know, I have
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: to make a decision, you know what I mean. And
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: and like that's like the easiest way I can say it,
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: because there really is no easy way around that conversation. Like,
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: I mean, you guys are players, Like, yeah, there's no
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: way on that conversation. I mean, did you ever think
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: someone was gonna traude you?
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think I've never felt that either.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Because I just feel like when you're in it, unless
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: you're just not playing well, I guess, and maybe you're
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: thinking about that, I just feel like you're you're just
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: in it.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: You're in the season. You're like in season mode.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: You're not necessarily now if you're playing well and you
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: end up getting traded, I just feel like that'd be
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: a massive shock that you just wouldn't see coming, right.
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: I feel like offensive linement don't aren't big trade items either,
- 1:20:44Speaker 6: are they not?
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: Typically? No? I think the lot of you usually see
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: skill players.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Like like Christian McCaffrey, Like, who knows if
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: that was old that he was getting traded, you know
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: what I mean. I just I have no clue, and
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: it'd be I'm sure it'll come on one day, right,
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: But I have a question, Yeah, go ahead, How how
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: consider how seriously considered was coach Pisacia in the head
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: coaching job when you came in as the GM.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Yeah, because a lot he was.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: He was a as you know, big time player favorite.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: He was a big time player favorite. I would put
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: my reputation on the line form type of guy. And
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: uh so yeah, what how how considered was he for
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: the head coaching job?
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: First?
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Just like, okay, they fired may they who knows what
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: they're gonna do with the head coach passat still in it.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Dave Zigler comes in his guys, are people kind of
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: know and connect the dots early?
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: But how much of a shot did he actually get?
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a good question. I to be honest with you,
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: I wasn't. In like the way that they did this
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: specific hiring here with the Raiders was a little bit differently.
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: They were interviewing head coaches and gms kind of at
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: the same same time, and so they didn't hire me
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: before they were interviewing head coaches while they were interviewing gms. So,
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: for example, some places, the GM gets hired and then
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: he's conducting all the head coaching interviews. This situation was
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: a little bit different. I got hired me and Josh
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: got hired at the same time, and so it just
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: just happens to be your boy. Yeah, and and so
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: not hiring you do fine, like in this specific situation,
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: that's not what they're whatever their blueprint is and whatever,
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: you know, and everybody everywhere is different. Someplaces the head
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: coach is hired first and then the GM's hired second.
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: Some places the GM's hired first and then the head
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: coaches second. And this one was kind of Simon got
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: So can't speak to it other than I know, like
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: his reputation, you know, is just being a great guy
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: is you know, precedes itself.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: Yeah, everyone I've spoken to, I mean you you sing
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: his praises all the time. But even people that weren't
- 1:22:56Speaker 6: on the raiders, they love them.
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I love him. Here's the papers.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: Yeah, because yeah, special chance.
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: Coach of the Packers this year, ye coordinator because I
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: had called asking about it.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Brother, that's a real deal. Yeah, yeah, he's a real deal.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: If he if you have the opportunity to get him,
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: if he's because that was when he was getting everything
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: was getting considered at that time.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: But yeah, he's a he's he's all time.
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: I have a personal question for Yeah.
- 1:23:20Speaker 6: My senior year of high school, YEP, I had a
- 1:23:23Speaker 6: thirty five percent in my Spanish class YEP, and you
- 1:23:26Speaker 6: I told you I was not going to go take
- 1:23:27Speaker 6: the final. I'm gonna have to go over construction and
- 1:23:29Speaker 6: you were like, just go take the test. And I
- 1:23:32Speaker 6: took the test and I put see for every single
- 1:23:33Speaker 6: answer and I got a seventy five in the class.
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: How did that happen?
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: These are old jobs, remember, and this is.
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: I don't even I don't I don't remember how it
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: all went down. I do remember, I'll digress a little bit.
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: I do remember when you came into Chaparral and first
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: seeing that transcript that was put across my desk one
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: point six GPA, and it was just brutal. You want
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: to talk about, just beat up like I wondered if
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: he actually went to school for the first two years
- 1:24:05Speaker 4: because there was just its littered with.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: FT Dude, it was basically Taylor one your assignment as
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: he Oh yes.
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: Oh really, Oh yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:24:15Speaker 6: I actually I want to I don't want to turn
- 1:24:17Speaker 6: this into like a podcast about me, but I do
- 1:24:18Speaker 6: want to learn more about my childhood with you.
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: I don't want to know all that stuff. Well, one,
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: I was kind of designated as the counselor. I'd come
- 1:24:26Speaker 4: from a background of football, so I was kind of
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: like the athletic counselor in terms of helping everybody navigate
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: the NCAA clearing house, getting eligible, all those different types
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: of things. So his GPA was atrocious when he came,
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: and we started to know in the spring, when these
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: coaches started coming around, like all right, this dude's going
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: to be a major D one prospect. I mean, I
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: think by the end of the spring you probably had
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: like fifteen offers before like the fall relieve and started off.
- 1:24:54Speaker 6: I had three offers Utah State, Minnesota, and ASU Okay,
- 1:24:59Speaker 6: so into the sea and then I put on those
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: first two game films out Okay, and then it.
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: Was quick like it was Miami. It was everybody, yeah,
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: you know, very quickly. It was awesome. And so so
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: I knew at that point, by looking at the the
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: the the atrociousness of the transcript, that we had a
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: lot of work to do. You you, I don't know
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: how much you remember how much you blocked out, but
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: you had to. There was a lot of work you
- 1:25:21Speaker 4: had to do personally, Yeah, that you hadn't done before. Yeah.
- 1:25:24Speaker 4: I remember I remember some some stressful times in my
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: office where this guy was in full meltdown mode as
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: a seventeen eighteen year old kid, Like you know, there
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: was a lot of hurdles that he was going to
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: have to overcome and a lot of work that he
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: had to do. At one point, I actually had a
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: we had a tutor. I had to hired a tutor
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: to help them. I was actually paying the tutor twenty
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: dollars a week to help you. Oh really yeah, out
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: of my own pocket, to get you, to get you going,
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: and not to do the work.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: How much does he owe you?
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: Geez? I mean, I'd have to look at all the
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: I'd have to look at the last contract.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: And year over year growth for his careers.
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: It's gotta be like we're talking six figures. Yeah, we're
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: talking six figures.
- 1:26:09Speaker 6: Who Yeah, who was the economics teacher? Doctor a mister nobody?
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: Because I got him on.
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: That triggered something because who is doctor doctor misress? Okay,
- 1:26:24Speaker 6: he was the economics teacher and he would go he
- 1:26:27Speaker 6: was a unique teacher, Like he would go and uh
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: like meander in the hallways like ten minutes after class started,
- 1:26:33Speaker 6: like the whole class of coin of sitting hanging out
- 1:26:34Speaker 6: and waiting for him and the final it was economics class.
- 1:26:39Speaker 6: The final he left on his desk and I took
- 1:26:41Speaker 6: a picture of it. I sent it to everybody in
- 1:26:43Speaker 6: the class. So everybody in the class got one hundred
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: percent in the class except for Derek Zubaga because the
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: last question was who's better Kobe or Lebron and he
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: answers Lebron and he he was a major Kobe fan.
- 1:26:54Speaker 6: So Derek, I got a got a ninety eight percent
- 1:26:57Speaker 6: and on the test or whatever. And I'm on the
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: bus going to graduation and Servantes is like, the seat
- 1:27:04Speaker 6: in front of me goes, hey, I know what you did.
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: I was like, what are you?
- 1:27:07Speaker 6: What are you talking about? He's like, I know, there's
- 1:27:08Speaker 6: a reason why everyone got me in the class. Like
- 1:27:11Speaker 6: just go and cut me a check when you make
- 1:27:13Speaker 6: it to the NFL.
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: I was like, you got above there you go.
- 1:27:17Speaker 6: I need to.
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: I need to.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: I feel like I have a feeling there's a lot
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: of people that came from that class or there was
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: a lot of helpers, a lot of helpers that people
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: people that see your success now are like, man, had
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: I not done this or x Y?
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: No, but you know what, but the thing that he
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: did that is is true, and this is a compliment,
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: but he was. He always treated people really well, whether teachers, coaches, students,
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: so on and so forth. Like this guy didn't have
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: any like not that I know of, like any enemies
- 1:27:48Speaker 4: or anything like that, and so people were looking to
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: help him out, do you know what I mean, or
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: like give him an extra boost, and he did a lot.
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: He had to do a lot of work on his own.
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: He did. He had to do a lot of work
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: because then he took the act, which wasn't atrocious, not bald. Yeah,
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: and it was actually surprising whatever you got. I mean,
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: I was like I looked at it had looked like
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: three and he ended up clearing for the n C
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: clearinghouse and he got to Michigan. Dude, that was the tools.
- 1:28:15Speaker 6: I literally tell that story about that, but like the
- 1:28:17Speaker 6: Spanish thing all of the time, because literally you had
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: me my senior year, like most kids in their senior year,
- 1:28:24Speaker 6: like do have half schedules and they're getting out of
- 1:28:26Speaker 6: like you.
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: You had like you had he actually had like nine classes. Yeah,
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: I had a full class. There's only seven periods of
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: the day.
- 1:28:31Speaker 6: Had to do online school as well. I had to
- 1:28:33Speaker 6: do another full year of online school in a semester.
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: So I would like, do you.
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: Remember when we were staying at the Arnold, how they
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: were talking to me about all the oh, yeah you
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: would have to do.
- 1:28:43Speaker 4: Yeah, it was like it was, dude, it was.
- 1:28:48Speaker 6: That was a wild time.
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: A lot of adversity in those times, a lot of adversity.
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: Here we are here, we are due.
- 1:28:55Speaker 6: That's so I think it is the coolest thing ever.
- 1:28:57Speaker 6: So would you do with that Spanish teacher?
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: I don't remember the exact details of it, other than
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: you know, talked about your hard work, your perseverance, your future,
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: and you got. You was a fucking man, dude, you got.
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: I actually owe you my career.
- 1:29:18Speaker 6: I wouldn't have gotten to the NFL if it wasn't
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: for you.
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: Would have started out at a juco and who knows
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: what would have happened from there. Yeah, we can't forget that.
- 1:29:25Speaker 6: Yeah, because I did get off the rails a little
- 1:29:27Speaker 6: bit in college, and so.
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: We've had some fun conversations. Yeah, one of his old
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: college teammates that's in talent, I did.
- 1:29:35Speaker 6: You know I got I went to Michigan, Michigan, I
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: went I went college mode for a little bit. And
- 1:29:39Speaker 6: I think if I would have gone to JUCO, I
- 1:29:42Speaker 6: probably wouldn't have seen the light at the end of
- 1:29:44Speaker 6: the tunnel, like the minute I got There's so much.
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: Less structure too in the football department at a JUCO. Yeah,
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: the people are like necessarily trying to correct. Yeah, either
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: sink or swim at JUCO.
- 1:29:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:29:58Speaker 6: Yeah, when you're evaluating players, like how much Obviously to
- 1:30:03Speaker 6: an extent it's a big deal, but how much do
- 1:30:05Speaker 6: character issues play a role?
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: They play a role? I think like it it depends
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: on how big the character issues are and what the
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: pattern of character character issues are, and how talented they are,
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: and how talented they are. Yeah, yeah, no doubt. It's
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: a sliding scale, you know. I think that when you
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: look at the personal traits and their personal traits that
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: would affect your ability to be good, like laziness, not accountable, immature,
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: doesn't like to work, doesn't like to practice hard, you know,
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: like those types of things like those to me are
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: major red flags the guys that maybe have some immaturity
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: stuff whatever it may be. But like you look at
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: the football traits, they love to compete, they love to
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: go against the best players in practice. They you know
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: they they they love you know, on Saturdays, they're always
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: you know, dialed in showing up like that. Like the
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: football traits, and I think like, if you have really
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: good football traits and some of your personal traits you
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: need to work on. I think that's a little bit
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: more manageable. Those are still calculated risks too, but I
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: think they're there are a higher there's a higher degree
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: of being profitable on someone that had loves to compete,
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: has some dog into them, like you know, those types
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: of people, but they're immature, and I think you have
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: to look at like how is that? What was that
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: person's environment, how were they raised, where were they raised,
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: who were their role models? You have to take those
- 1:31:34Speaker 4: things to account because you can't just penalize someone that
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: never had any structure for them to be successful, do
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: you know what I mean? Or or or build those
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: other characteristics the guys that I think you worry about
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: more of the guys that like have all the talent,
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: but those football traits are low. Like that's where you
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: get burned. And so I think it's it's it's one
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: of it's I can't I can't actually understate how important
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: it is you're making million dollar investments, you know in
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: these young in their young kids at the time, and
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: so like if you're going to take a chance on
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: someone that has like traits that are questionable, unlike, you know,
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: you got to pay the you gotta pay the piper
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: if they don't work out. But that's why I think
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: the football traits are really important. And then you gotta
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: you know, you gotta kind of do the risk reward
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: On the other side of things.
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: When it comes to like your philosophy, are there like
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: core questions or fundamental questions you ask yourself when making
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: these when making decisions on a player. I know can
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: very situation a situation, but you're kind of going through there,
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: and it kind of just sparked, like do you have
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: like core foundational questions when making a decision, whether it's
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: big or small.
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: Are you talking about like when I'm actually like interviewing
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: a player.
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: I guess like making a transaction with the player, something
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: that you use that it's just like a core foundation
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: of what your philosophy is. Yeah, things that you like
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: just default too, Like all right, let me get this
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: is getting There's a lot of conversation going on, like
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: what like let me get back to what I want.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: To just sit and ask myself about this guy.
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I probably won't get like super specific to that question.
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: But like one thing for me that I look at
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: is I like to see I'm intrigued or I find
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: value in people that have had to go through a
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: lot of transitions in life. So whether it's and again
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: it doesn't have to be major stuff, whether it could
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: be I went to you know, three or four different
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: high schools, or you know, in college, I played with
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: three different coordinators and had four different position coaches, or
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: maybe major stuff, do you know what I mean? Like
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: I was homeless, I you know, had to overcome these
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: personal situations in my life just to get here. Like,
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: I just like to see people in some form or fashion,
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: whether it's like the extreme end of the scale, or
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: whether it's something like just football related, that have had
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: to go through transitions and have had to deal with
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: like little, whether it's little or major, like aspects of adversity.
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: Because I think when you get to the league and
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: you guys know, like the amount of life transitions and
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: just you go through from being a college player to
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: an NFL player, is there there's hundreds do you know?
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: What I mean of things that you go through and
- 1:34:12Speaker 4: I think it's all new too, and it's all new,
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: and if you've never went through anything and it's been
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: all smooth sailing for you and you get into the league,
- 1:34:21Speaker 4: those scare me more. And it's not that I wouldn't
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: select a player that's never had anything like that, right,
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: but like I want to know, like what of you?
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: What are what are these different situations that you've had
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: to deal with? Do you know what I mean? What
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: life transitions? Have you went through? Have you experienced life?
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: Do you know what I mean? And so like those
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: are That's something that's important to me.
- 1:34:41Speaker 6: I love that when you're like going off that, when
- 1:34:43Speaker 6: you're at the combine, what to you is more important
- 1:34:47Speaker 6: those interviews or the actual tests, like the physical tests,
- 1:34:51Speaker 6: because the physical tests I've heard somebody are like, this
- 1:34:53Speaker 6: is just checking Boston question, Thank you sir. I appreciate that,
- 1:34:56Speaker 6: like checkboxes. But then you get those fifteen twenty minutes
- 1:34:59Speaker 6: it was the train station or in those officials yep,
- 1:35:02Speaker 6: to kind of like really digest who the person really
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: is yep.
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: And I would say, like the physical stuff, like the
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: testing and all that stuff, and you know the times
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: and whatnot. Like that is important because it's a piece
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: of the puzzle that like, it's one of the pieces
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: of the puzzle that you're putting together when you kind
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: of get to the end. But the real value is
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: those interviews. The real value is being able to and
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: again it's not a lot of time, but it's being
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: able to sit down for fifteen minutes or twenty minutes
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: and be in a room and one see how they're
- 1:35:33Speaker 4: going to react to being in the room. You learn
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: a lot in fifteen minutes. At the same time, you
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: learn about how you know someone carries themselves, how they
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: how serious they take the situation, how they communicate their
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: body language, and when for specifically for me, like if
- 1:35:53Speaker 4: you're coming into into the room, I already know I
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: already know a lot about you, I should say, I
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: already know what a lot of people have said about you.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: Right, I've went to Michigan, I've talked to all the
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: people at Michigan. I kind of have a profile on
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: who Taylor Luwan is before you even walk in the room.
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: So there's certain things that I'm gonna want to get
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: to know about you. To compare and contrast what people
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: say good or bad, and it's not all bad. It
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: could be you come in with not a flaw in
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: the world. No one will say anything bad about you, Right, Okay, Well,
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: let me kind of delve into that and see kind
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: of you know what you're about and is that a
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: true statement? And so, yeah, you can learn a lot
- 1:36:36Speaker 4: in fifteen minutes, and then it piles on because then
- 1:36:39Speaker 4: I'm going to learn about you more after the combine,
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: whether it's on an official thirty visit, whether it's your
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: pro day, so on and so forth. So yeah, I
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: mean it's it's probably one of the most important things
- 1:36:50Speaker 4: because again I think, like going back a little bit,
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: you talked about it, but like you hear the coaches
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: say this every week in press conferences in players, because
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: it's true, it's hard to win it one game in
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: the NFL, It's hard to win. Everybody's so talented, and
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: so I think it's important when you're in terms of
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: team building, the more guys that you have on your team,
- 1:37:11Speaker 4: that you have to use resources to player development. Man,
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: And I'm not saying like all these things are important,
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: but if I have to expel resources on making sure
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: you're in the building on time, making sure you're handling
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: things off the field that don't bleed into your performance
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: on the field, whether it's having to spend time again
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: an exorbitant amount of time teaching you the system, teaching
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: you in your role, all those resources that you have
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: to put out to other places. And it's fine, you're
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: going to do it to a degree, but the more
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: you have to put out, the less you're focusing on winning.
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: And so I think, like, if you're bringing in a
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: ton of players that are going to require all these
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: different resources, you're taking away the main focus, which is
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: being which is winning football game. And it's hard to
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: win if you're putting all these resources towards all these
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: other things that are don't have to do necessarily, like
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: playing linebacker or playing tackle. And so that's why I
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: think you have to be really intentional about how you
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: build your team and who you bring in because of
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: how hard it is just to win.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: What's the most unique conversation you've had with the prospect
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: that like the combine that's another solid question, or also like,
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: as you're thinking about that, maybe a unique question that
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: you might have for a player.
- 1:38:36Speaker 6: They talk about a unique question like off the wall,
- 1:38:39Speaker 6: you know what I mean, Like the Bengals asked me
- 1:38:42Speaker 6: how many things are gonna do with the paper clip
- 1:38:44Speaker 6: in one minute and then videotape me.
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't really go down that path. Okay, that's
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: that's what you're kind of talking.
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: I saw him thinking, So I would definitely have to
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: know if he's had like what's a memory has Like
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: with the conversation with the player that was just whether bizarre, unique, whatever.
- 1:39:01Speaker 4: Well, two things. One, I don't really, to be honest
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: with you, I don't really have like any of those
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: off the wall questions that I personally do, Like, you know,
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: you're a cat, would you rather be a cat or
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: a dog? You know? Like I don't really you.
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: Should be like, this is Jesus for free porn hubb
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: red tube.
- 1:39:23Speaker 4: Well if we if we could delve into if we
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: can delve into that, maybe I take that back cut
- 1:39:31Speaker 4: the tape. Yeah, Well there's a couple of things. One
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: I don't have anything like specific like that. This is
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: the NFL has a very specific guideline question there's guidelines
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: on what you can and can't ask from an appropriate standpoint.
- 1:39:53Speaker 6: So yeah, because they should be able to ask like
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: your sexual orientation, right or do they?
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: I don't.
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: There was back in the day, back in the day,
- 1:40:00Speaker 6: a wild West.
- 1:40:01Speaker 4: A lot more respectable in your questions and stuff like that.
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: So I don't have anything that that I specifically ask
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: that is off the wall. I have do have some
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: things that I specifically asked that I won't share here
- 1:40:13Speaker 4: because they're specific to specific to me. Now, I've had
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: just some college prospects. Like let's say a guy was
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: had an arrest for something, whatever it may be, he
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: was arrested, you know, let's just hypothetically say he was
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: arrested and there was Michigan or something drugs in the car.
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: Just some guys just go off and just like tell
- 1:40:40Speaker 4: me the story and like complete detail, like way more
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: than I wanted to know, like and just like blow
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: a bunch of people's spots up, you know what I mean,
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: not only themselves, but like two other teammates too, like
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: just with no filter, Like you know, maybe they didn't
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: realize that they were on a job, like this was
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: a job interview type of thing. It was like we
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: were just sitting at the bar, and it was like
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: they gave me like the whole scoop and then you
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: just they walk away like that's walk more. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: like that was can't draft him, he's a snitch. Was
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: a crazy night, yeah, you know, and so a couple
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: of those going to coaching for a little bit.
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely wanted to basically up until you know,
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: we were podcasting and then every coach is like, do
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: not do this, brother, Like you get to do that? Yeah.
- 1:41:33Speaker 6: Imagine if you were a coaching instead of being a GM,
- 1:41:36Speaker 6: you were the head coach, which is both fantastic jobs,
- 1:41:39Speaker 6: but I feel like the time spent I have no
- 1:41:42Speaker 6: idea what upstairs is like, but the time spent for coaches,
- 1:41:44Speaker 6: like you got your family.
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: Yeah, you were kind of saying, you get a little
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: bit more control in your day, like as long as
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: you're you're prioritizing and.
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: Yeah, but that's what he was doing.
- 1:41:54Speaker 6: You were a little farther down the totem pole, like
- 1:41:56Speaker 6: now you're the GM, I'm sure there's more.
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I could spend all day and all
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: night there, you know what I mean, Like if you
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: really wanted to, there's that much stuff that's done. I've always,
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: you know, in terms of like the balance, I've always
- 1:42:09Speaker 4: tried to live close to the facility, and so you know,
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: I have three kids, and at one time they were
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: all young enough where all three of them were in diapers,
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: which was just another you know, that was hellish, hellish years. Yeah,
- 1:42:24Speaker 4: me and my wife made it through. So now we
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: know we're good.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: We made it through years time.
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: We're battle testing.
- 1:42:30Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, exactly, you've been to the fire when you
- 1:42:33Speaker 6: were checking off the adversity like what people have gone through,
- 1:42:35Speaker 6: like you've done it.
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: You're save get Yeah. But like speaking that coaching, because
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: there's always you know, meetings and all that stuff. That's
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: just I actually take off, Like I'll take off around
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: six o'clock at night and come home, eat dinner with
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: my kids, give showers, give my wife a little break,
- 1:42:52Speaker 4: and then I go back to the office, and then
- 1:42:54Speaker 4: I'll work till whenever I work, whether it's ten thirty
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: or eleven o'clock at night. And so I do. That's
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: how I try to create some balance just with work
- 1:43:03Speaker 4: and you know and and personal and things like that
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: to give my kids, like some sweet sense of normalcy,
- 1:43:11Speaker 4: even though when every time I come home to every
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: like it's dad, are you going back to work? Like
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: I come home on like a Saturday, you know, and
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: it's dad, You're going back to work, you know. So
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: that's kind of a part of the deal. But that's
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: how I try to create. But like within coaching, that's
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: it's hard to even do that, do you know what
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: I mean? Like it's it's pedal to the metal unless
- 1:43:27Speaker 4: you're the head.
- 1:43:27Speaker 6: Guy right making like if you're the head coach making
- 1:43:29Speaker 6: the rules correct. But if you're like the offensive line coach,
- 1:43:31Speaker 6: it's like you basically I have work to do, but
- 1:43:34Speaker 6: I really can't leave until the head coach leaves. Yeah whatever,
- 1:43:37Speaker 6: maybe like I had to watch the tote pole above me,
- 1:43:39Speaker 6: like go before I can I can pay.
- 1:43:41Speaker 4: It's atal business man, brutal dude.
- 1:43:43Speaker 6: People don't realize because there's a lot of people that
- 1:43:45Speaker 6: want to get into coaching because it's like just like
- 1:43:47Speaker 6: all of us, like we just love balling. You want
- 1:43:49Speaker 6: to stay in it somehow if luckily we've kind of
- 1:43:51Speaker 6: made this avenue to stay in ball. But like a
- 1:43:53Speaker 6: lot of people at default go to coaching not realizing
- 1:43:55Speaker 6: what they're really getting into.
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: It's like eighty ninety hours a week. Yeah, and like
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: you don't you leave your house like you play on
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: a Sunday. You go into work on Monday and you
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: don't see your kids again to toil like Friday. Yeah, right,
- 1:44:06Speaker 4: Friday is like the good day, rightday. That's the easy out.
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: Early schools out early, ye know, Yeah, peeling out of
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: the parking lot and you're out of there at like
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: four thirty or five, you know, with with at least
- 1:44:18Speaker 4: for us, which is like, you know, that's like breakfast time. Yeah,
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: you know what I mean. In the coaching world, every.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: Coach is like it's you know, once I've been around,
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: it's like, what else am I going to do?
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: What else would I do?
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: The one who would tell me to like not get
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: in and he'd even call me. He called me like
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: a few times last year. It was a coach Manusky.
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: He's with the Vikings. He's a live lieby coach. He
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: was my coordinator in Washington. He's with Kentucky University of
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: Kentucky a couple of years.
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: Awesome, dude.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: Remember I'll tell you stories about Tom Sula, Yeah, coach Tomsula,
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: the Italian Yeah, with Delaney Walker and him and his
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: best friends like Minuski and those dudes were like the best.
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: But Minski out Chentle fights like, compty this gig you got.
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: Going on right now?
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: He's like, don't you don't want to get into coaching,
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: And he would just be like, I.
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: Do it because it's you know, I feel like it's
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: all I got.
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: He's like, but I could just sit on a bus
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: and talk ship like we do it the coolest.
- 1:45:17Speaker 6: It is awesome. You have to coaching would fucking suck.
- 1:45:20Speaker 6: I don't know, boys, what do we think?
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: Who's like the perfect player, like the best scout report
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: you've seen? Oh, that's a good question.
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: JP just asked, who is the best scouting report? Who's
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: the best player that had the best scouting report you've
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: ever seen?
- 1:45:36Speaker 4: On a guy.
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: He didn't necessarily have to out.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: Trent Richardson didn't necessarily have to pan on the league,
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: but still on paper, he's like this guy just read.
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: Like how people Well he's one of them. But I
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: would say, like even it was before I got in
- 1:45:54Speaker 4: the league, but like Peyton Manning's scouting report was like.
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: But he went on but he went second to Ryan Leif,
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: Ryan Leif.
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: What was Ryan leaf scouting report? Like that was before
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: I was in the league too.
- 1:46:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I know, but like I know, you ever look
- 1:46:11Speaker 6: back at old stuff and just like because you like
- 1:46:12Speaker 6: for the love of the year.
- 1:46:13Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, sometimes I do, yeah, sometimes I do, and
- 1:46:16Speaker 4: and I don't. I don't remember specifically what Leaf's was.
- 1:46:20Speaker 4: I know there was like I just know Peyton's was
- 1:46:26Speaker 4: like this guy was like most mature guy, super smart. Obviously,
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: the pedigree was ridiculous. He was awesome on the field,
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: field general, the whole deal. It was like grown man,
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: you know, as a twenty two year old kid. And
- 1:46:43Speaker 4: there wasn't like a flaw on the scouting report. Maybe
- 1:46:45Speaker 4: like the arm strength wasn't like top notch, but his
- 1:46:49Speaker 4: scouting report was amazing. I'm trying to think, is that
- 1:46:53Speaker 4: my first year in the league was like or one
- 1:46:54Speaker 4: of my first years in the league was like the
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: twenty twelve draft, which if you're a sports nerd and
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: you go back and look at the two thousand, I
- 1:47:01Speaker 4: think it's twenty twelve, twenty twelve when von Miller was
- 1:47:04Speaker 4: drafted to the research department eleven, right, maybe it was eleven, Yeah,
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: because my second year in the league was eleven. It
- 1:47:11Speaker 4: was eleven, I was twenty ten, eleven like that, what's
- 1:47:16Speaker 4: that eleven? Was von Miller? I believe because it was
- 1:47:20Speaker 4: Cam Newton was picked number one. Then we had the
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: number two pick. Von Miller was picked and was Marcel
- 1:47:28Speaker 4: Darius was picked in that round. Patrick Peterson was picked
- 1:47:31Speaker 4: in the first round. A. J. Green was picked in
- 1:47:33Speaker 4: the in the first round.
- 1:47:34Speaker 6: J J.
- 1:47:35Speaker 4: Watt was picked in the first round. Julio was picked
- 1:47:38Speaker 4: in the first round. There's all one draft.
- 1:47:40Speaker 6: Yeah, no, that's wild.
- 1:47:41Speaker 4: And then Tyron Smith, I mean it's it's insane. But
- 1:47:46Speaker 4: the guy whose scouting report was ridiculous, Like is Julio Jones?
- 1:47:51Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I mean just an alien? An alien? Yeah, size, length, hands,
- 1:47:58Speaker 4: speed and the thing about who Jones? It was really unique.
- 1:48:02Speaker 4: And this is what makes a lot of the really
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: talented receivers unique. When you see the big tall guy
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: that has a little guy I say the little guy's
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: skill set, meaning he can get in and out of
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: all the different like the curls, the comebacks, like the
- 1:48:15Speaker 4: hard angle breaks were like the little guys, you know,
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: they can drop their weight really quick and get out
- 1:48:20Speaker 4: of a renfro like Julio Jones can run every route
- 1:48:25Speaker 4: on the route tree. But he's six foot machine, yeah, bro,
- 1:48:34Speaker 4: because he can do like he was one of those
- 1:48:36Speaker 4: guys that could run all the different you know, all
- 1:48:38Speaker 4: the different routes. And you saw him at college. I
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: mean he was a man amongst boys and there wasn't.
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: Like Alabama too. At Alabama already men amongst boys in college.
- 1:48:47Speaker 4: Yeah, what could you say negative? You know what I mean?
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: So like he was, he was a special one coming out.
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: Going up with wish he fucking did stand on the
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: wide receiver trend. DeVante Adams Free. You have one of
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: the best, arguably the best wide receiver in the league.
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: Talk about him. Max was talking about his.
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: Work ethic and him as an overall teammate, which he
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: was very surprised comparing. He was comparing Davante to when
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: they had a superstar on Antonio Brown and just how
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: different you know they're you know, so what I'm looking for.
- 1:49:16Speaker 6: Aby was a diva superstar, And when Davante Adams was
- 1:49:21Speaker 6: brought in, he was thinking, like, man, this is is
- 1:49:23Speaker 6: he going to be the same way as ab was?
- 1:49:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and it sounds like he's not at all.
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: No, The unique thing about him, like, besides I'll get
- 1:49:31Speaker 4: to the skill set, the unique thing about him is
- 1:49:33Speaker 4: like his his demeanor and his approach he's a like
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: he like he's a grown man, like he should come
- 1:49:40Speaker 4: into work. He comes in all Jordan gear. He's a
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: Jordan guy, but like he should come in like in
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: like a you know, a five thousand dollars suit, you know,
- 1:49:48Speaker 4: with a briefcase. Like this guy's coming into work business. Yes,
- 1:49:53Speaker 4: and his focus and these are that I've been around
- 1:49:56Speaker 4: a few like or the really really top really some
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: of the best in the history of the game. I've
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: been around Peyton Manning and Denver tom Brady in New
- 1:50:05Speaker 4: England and DeVante Adams here. And the similarity that those
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: guys have is every single day, it seems, is like Sunday,
- 1:50:13Speaker 4: like their approach does not waiver, Like he is that
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: dial then, like DeVante Adams at practice on a Wednesday
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: is as dial inn as what you see on Sunday.
- 1:50:22Speaker 4: I mean he is just works and he's a serious
- 1:50:27Speaker 4: demeanor and he every like every part of the day.
- 1:50:30Speaker 4: And he and he's a great guy too, Like he
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: has a good personality, but like there's no mistake in
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: that he's there to work, like he's there to get
- 1:50:37Speaker 4: better and he is there to like be the best
- 1:50:40Speaker 4: version of himself every single day and I'm talking about
- 1:50:43Speaker 4: from OTA's training camp to the last week of the season,
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: just before we were playing Kansas City. It's the same
- 1:50:50Speaker 4: every day. And that's what's really unique about him is
- 1:50:53Speaker 4: his approach is just super serious and there is no
- 1:50:56Speaker 4: frills with him. There is no diva with him, There
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: is no extra stuff. There is just well, yeah, everyone
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: has to have a camera, everyone's got something, everyone's like.
- 1:51:11Speaker 4: When he comes in the building, it's it's it's it's all.
- 1:51:15Speaker 4: It's all work like every day and so like that's
- 1:51:19Speaker 4: the one thing that's really unique about him. And then
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: the skill set for him is what you don't see
- 1:51:23Speaker 4: is like what I was surprised when I got and
- 1:51:25Speaker 4: saw him start practicing, as I knew was good, but
- 1:51:28Speaker 4: was just like the start stop ability, the ability to
- 1:51:31Speaker 4: change speeds like within a route. A lot of people
- 1:51:34Speaker 4: run routes just one speed. This guy runs one route.
- 1:51:37Speaker 4: There's like seven different speeds within that one route. And
- 1:51:41Speaker 4: then he has the ability like his strength is deceiving,
- 1:51:44Speaker 4: like this guy's hard to bring down, super powerful, strong,
- 1:51:48Speaker 4: hard to tackle, can make people miss. He has that
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: just that suddenness that yeah, you know that little that
- 1:51:56Speaker 4: little move that's like again for a guy that's over
- 1:51:58Speaker 4: six foot, over two hundred pounds with the best hand
- 1:52:02Speaker 4: coordination hand eye coordination I've ever seen, really like the
- 1:52:06Speaker 4: late hands. We call it the late hands on the
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: deep ball. So like the good, good receivers that have
- 1:52:11Speaker 4: that become really good deep ball receivers. A cornerback is
- 1:52:14Speaker 4: taught to watch a receiver's hands, so like, you know,
- 1:52:17Speaker 4: he's running on my hip, I'm running on the deep ball.
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: When my hands go up, that's the DB's signal for
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: his hands and eyes to go up. My man, Davante,
- 1:52:28Speaker 4: if you watch the latest hands in the game, like
- 1:52:31Speaker 4: the deep ball will be coming. I see it in practice.
- 1:52:33Speaker 4: The dB goes, they go nuts because they just can't
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: stop it. His deep ball. The ball's coming, it's coming.
- 1:52:39Speaker 4: And it's literally just that most guys, it's coming, it's coming.
- 1:52:45Speaker 4: It's I mean, he just and it's it's the most
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: ridiculous thing you ever see. Like the ability to do
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: that when you're running at twenty miles per hour, like
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: as a top end speed, a guy's on your hip
- 1:52:57Speaker 4: and you're also running fifty yards to be able to
- 1:53:01Speaker 4: do all of that and then just I mean at
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: the hand, eye coordination on him his reaction, Superstar, you.
- 1:53:08Speaker 6: Were saying in Kansas City has lost by one point.
- 1:53:11Speaker 6: You lost so many games this year by seven or
- 1:53:13Speaker 6: less points, Like, as a GM, where do you start
- 1:53:17Speaker 6: so next year that those game of inches, those title
- 1:53:20Speaker 6: little inches go your way?
- 1:53:21Speaker 4: Now, Yeah, that's a good question. Thank you, great question.
- 1:53:25Speaker 4: Appreciate that. I'm getting better. Yeah, we we. I think
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: we lost what it was eight to one score games,
- 1:53:32Speaker 4: you know, and and again like at the end of
- 1:53:33Speaker 4: the day, we weren't good enough. That's the fact of
- 1:53:36Speaker 4: the matter to win those games. And so I think
- 1:53:38Speaker 4: when you look at them, a lot of games in
- 1:53:40Speaker 4: football and a lot of our games this year, there's
- 1:53:42Speaker 4: three or four plays in each game that were that
- 1:53:47Speaker 4: that didn't go our way, and so start to dig
- 1:53:49Speaker 4: in why you have to start asking the question why,
- 1:53:52Speaker 4: you know, why didn't they go that way? And and
- 1:53:54Speaker 4: again some of them there's there's a lot of different reasons.
- 1:53:57Speaker 4: I would say the one thing for that that I
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: think is important to have to being able to So
- 1:54:05Speaker 4: I'll say it like this, I think the thing that's
- 1:54:08Speaker 4: important to win those close games is you have to
- 1:54:11Speaker 4: have people that you have to have a group of
- 1:54:13Speaker 4: eleven guys that in those critical moments can all execute
- 1:54:17Speaker 4: their assignment and be synchronized with each other. And I
- 1:54:23Speaker 4: think at times we just we weren't able to do
- 1:54:24Speaker 4: that for whatever the reason is, do you know what
- 1:54:26Speaker 4: I mean? And there's could be a lot of reasons
- 1:54:28Speaker 4: to that. And I think that and I've talked about
- 1:54:30Speaker 4: this in other interviews. I think one thing that's important
- 1:54:33Speaker 4: to me in terms of building the team and improving
- 1:54:35Speaker 4: the team is improving also, I think, are the football
- 1:54:37Speaker 4: intelligence on our team. Yeah, situational awareness, situational football, situational awareness,
- 1:54:43Speaker 4: and some some of that comes from who you're bringing in,
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: some of that comes from how you you know, how
- 1:54:47Speaker 4: you teach it, and and and all those things kind
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: of come together. But building a smart, tough, physical football
- 1:54:56Speaker 4: team that can perform in the critical situations is kind
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: of the philosoph be and it's something that's really important
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: to us as as a Raider organization. And so I
- 1:55:06Speaker 4: think to do that, we have to continue to find
- 1:55:08Speaker 4: the pieces in the different rooms, whether it's the linebacker room,
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: whether it's the defensive back room or receiver room, whatever,
- 1:55:15Speaker 4: find players that embody that that can do that in
- 1:55:18Speaker 4: those critical moments, and I think those are some of
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: the If we can do that, I think we'll eventually
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: we'll end up turning the tides on those close games,
- 1:55:25Speaker 4: and those close games will be the games that we win.
- 1:55:27Speaker 6: How much do you not just look at the players,
- 1:55:29Speaker 6: but you look back at these close games and the
- 1:55:32Speaker 6: coaches calling, and like, do you look at those and
- 1:55:35Speaker 6: we've probably wouldn't have been in this calm the situation,
- 1:55:37Speaker 6: and do you like, are you critical of those types
- 1:55:39Speaker 6: of things?
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: Yeah? I mean so like with Josh and I specifically,
- 1:55:42Speaker 4: obviously we have a relationship that goes a long way back,
- 1:55:44Speaker 4: and so we we we have a lot of those
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: critical conversations and we can have them and we can
- 1:55:49Speaker 4: The cool thing about us is we can do it
- 1:55:51Speaker 4: without it causing like a divide. I mean, you guys
- 1:55:53Speaker 4: have well you've been in Tennessee the whole time. You've
- 1:55:55Speaker 4: been in some different buildings. But we've been in the NFL,
- 1:55:58Speaker 4: and we know there can be these different ruggles between
- 1:56:00Speaker 4: coaching and personnel and you know, all those different types
- 1:56:03Speaker 4: of things. I would say one, I have a having
- 1:56:06Speaker 4: coached and understand it, even though it was at college
- 1:56:09Speaker 4: and high school. I have a great amount of respect
- 1:56:11Speaker 4: for coaches and what they do and the amount of time.
- 1:56:14Speaker 4: Like we talked about the amount of time that they
- 1:56:16Speaker 4: put in, and so I'm not going to act like
- 1:56:19Speaker 4: the expert either, do you know what I mean? Because
- 1:56:20Speaker 4: I know how much time that they put in, and
- 1:56:22Speaker 4: I know ultimately what coaches are trying to do is
- 1:56:24Speaker 4: they try to put players in the best situations to
- 1:56:27Speaker 4: have you to have the players be successful.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: And so.
- 1:56:33Speaker 4: I don't act like the expert to answer part of
- 1:56:36Speaker 4: your question because I'm not the expert, right and so
- 1:56:38Speaker 4: I can I'll ask maybe the why or the reason,
- 1:56:42Speaker 4: and you know, i'd say almost ten out of ten
- 1:56:46Speaker 4: times or a lot of the times, like, Okay, I
- 1:56:48Speaker 4: get it. You were trying to do X, Y and
- 1:56:49Speaker 4: Z and we didn't. You know, we didn't execute it
- 1:56:52Speaker 4: for whatever the reason is. But we have a lot
- 1:56:54Speaker 4: of those conversations of I have a lot of the
- 1:56:56Speaker 4: conversations because I want to learn too, of the whys.
- 1:56:59Speaker 4: Why do we do this here? Why did we do
- 1:57:01Speaker 4: that here? But it's not the why of like why
- 1:57:04Speaker 4: the hell did you do that? It's more like the
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: curiosity and again having the dialogue of to understand to
- 1:57:09Speaker 4: make sure, like we are doing the right things, and
- 1:57:11Speaker 4: it's to be the same question, why did you draft
- 1:57:13Speaker 4: this guy here or why did you bring this guy
- 1:57:16Speaker 4: on the team. What did you think he could do? Well?
- 1:57:18Speaker 4: I thought he was going to fill this role and
- 1:57:20Speaker 4: be able to help us in this area. That's the why.
- 1:57:23Speaker 4: So we have a lot of those conversations. But I'm
- 1:57:25Speaker 4: not in there as like, you know, acting like I'm
- 1:57:28Speaker 4: the expert.
- 1:57:29Speaker 6: I guess at the end of the day, right, I
- 1:57:31Speaker 6: guess it's like, yeah, no, that makes sense.
- 1:57:33Speaker 4: Today today because of the way that the game's covered
- 1:57:39Speaker 4: with there's so many different social media outlets, right, there's Twitter,
- 1:57:43Speaker 4: there's you know again, all this different stuff. One thing
- 1:57:46Speaker 4: that I've noticed that obviously drives discussion and drives clicks
- 1:57:52Speaker 4: and all the other different stuff. And that's not a criticism,
- 1:57:54Speaker 4: that's just this is what's popular is coaches decisions, right,
- 1:57:58Speaker 4: like game management decisions. Well, they called a time out here,
- 1:58:01Speaker 4: why didn't they save the time out to here? So
- 1:58:04Speaker 4: that's a hot button issue, is like criticizing coaches and
- 1:58:08Speaker 4: criticizing game management and criticizing coaches decisions. I would tell
- 1:58:12Speaker 4: you this what I've learned, for the most part, is
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: that they have really good reasons behind most of the
- 1:58:17Speaker 4: decisions that they make, and they spend a lot of
- 1:58:20Speaker 4: time during the week, like I said, of putting players
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: in positions to make plays. And so I guess I'm
- 1:58:26Speaker 4: pro coach in that way because I respect what they do,
- 1:58:29Speaker 4: and I respect the time that they put in, and
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: I respect them they're the experts in their field and
- 1:58:34Speaker 4: that they're making decisions. Most of the times, they're making
- 1:58:37Speaker 4: decisions that they think are best. Not not to say
- 1:58:39Speaker 4: there aren't game management you know, you know games where
- 1:58:43Speaker 4: coaches make poor decisions when it comes to game management
- 1:58:46Speaker 4: or maybe a play call here or there, like they're
- 1:58:48Speaker 4: going to nobody's going to be perfect. But I'm going
- 1:58:50Speaker 4: to side with the experts and the amount of time
- 1:58:53Speaker 4: that they put in and you know, kind of lead
- 1:58:57Speaker 4: on their lean on their expertise.
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: When it comes to these big decisions.
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: We wouldn't be able to do this pop without asking
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: about the Derek Carr situation. How difficult of a decision
- 1:59:07Speaker 2: was that, especially late in the year, knowing that he
- 1:59:09Speaker 2: was you know, he's been the Raiders guy for I
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: think nine years.
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: Yeah, can you speak on that situation a little bit?
- 1:59:16Speaker 4: Yeah, you know that a decision like that, it's a
- 1:59:19Speaker 4: tough decision and and like you said, there's a lot
- 1:59:22Speaker 4: of emotion involved in that decision too. And I would think, say,
- 1:59:25Speaker 4: one like you spent time with Derek Carr, and Derek
- 1:59:28Speaker 4: Carr is a phenomenal human Being's it's it's hard not
- 1:59:31Speaker 4: to like Derek Carr. And it's hard not to like
- 1:59:34Speaker 4: Derek Carr. Not just because he's has a great personality.
- 1:59:38Speaker 4: He's kind, he's caring, he's respectful, all of that different stuff,
- 1:59:41Speaker 4: but he also, like you said, he was with the
- 1:59:43Speaker 4: Raiders for nine years, playing one of the playing arguably
- 1:59:47Speaker 4: the most difficult position to play in all of sports.
- 1:59:49Speaker 4: The quarterback's tough position to play in totality.
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: And so.
- 1:59:56Speaker 4: Yeah, so to to see a guy that's played, you know,
- 1:59:59Speaker 4: again he's played the nine years for the same organization
- 2:00:02Speaker 4: and having to make a decision like that, there's a
- 2:00:04Speaker 4: lot of emotion that's involved in trying and having to
- 2:00:06Speaker 4: make that decision. And it's a hard decision to make.
- 2:00:10Speaker 4: And at the end of the day, like that's what
- 2:00:11Speaker 4: we get paid to do too, is make hard decisions,
- 2:00:14Speaker 4: and we have to make a lot of hard decisions
- 2:00:16Speaker 4: throughout the year. I mean, that's the most high profile one,
- 2:00:19Speaker 4: but there was a lot of decisions throughout the year
- 2:00:21Speaker 4: that were hard decisions to make, whether it was you know,
- 2:00:24Speaker 4: making a decision with John Abram or you know, Alex Leatherwood. Again,
- 2:00:29Speaker 4: all those decisions are hard decisions, like we talked about
- 2:00:31Speaker 4: the beginning one, because it's someone's livelihood, you know what
- 2:00:34Speaker 4: I mean, and people that are really dedicated to their
- 2:00:37Speaker 4: craft too, and so they're all hard, and they're all
- 2:00:42Speaker 4: decisions you don't want to have to make. And again,
- 2:00:44Speaker 4: I think that one was even a little bit more
- 2:00:46Speaker 4: difficult because of what he's meant to the Raider organization
- 2:00:49Speaker 4: and just who he is as a human being.
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:00:52Speaker 2: Yeah, And I feel like it also speaks, like you know,
- 2:00:55Speaker 2: earlier before the pod, you kind of talk about your
- 2:00:57Speaker 2: philosophies of like getting in your spot, the perspective that
- 2:01:00Speaker 2: you have that whole, like the fear of failure, like
- 2:01:04Speaker 2: not being able, not being able to have that close
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: to you. Because I'm sure a decision like that was
- 2:01:09Speaker 2: obviously a huge one. Like the external noise out there,
- 2:01:12Speaker 2: everybody questioning stuff, why this lay all this stuff, It's
- 2:01:16Speaker 2: kind of one of those things where you're you know,
- 2:01:18Speaker 2: being true, I guess yourself in that philosophy of like
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: this could this is a very difficult decision, but I'm
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: gonna go with my gut here and you know, move
- 2:01:26Speaker 2: forward with it.
- 2:01:27Speaker 4: Yeah, those are I mean, like I said, those are because.
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: I'm sure you it's it's like a fire. You immediately
- 2:01:32Speaker 2: kind of feel like you kind of hear it all,
- 2:01:34Speaker 2: whether or not you want to separate it. It's like, oh,
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: this is gonna be massive once it gets out.
- 2:01:39Speaker 4: Yeah, you and i'd be lying up it said you
- 2:01:41Speaker 4: don't hear it all, you know what I mean, or
- 2:01:42Speaker 4: most of it like you do. It's hard not to hear,
- 2:01:45Speaker 4: you know, on any of the decisions that you make.
- 2:01:48Speaker 4: And so yeah, you just got to trust you got
- 2:01:50Speaker 4: to trust your you know, trust your gut, and you
- 2:01:52Speaker 4: have to be convicted on the decisions that you make
- 2:01:55Speaker 4: and have a plan and a reason for doing it.
- 2:01:57Speaker 4: And I'm not going to get into all that, but
- 2:01:59Speaker 4: you know, there's a plan and a reason for every decision,
- 2:02:01Speaker 4: and you know, like ultimately you have to you have
- 2:02:06Speaker 4: to feel like you're making the best decision for the raiders,
- 2:02:09Speaker 4: whether it's you know, in the short term of the
- 2:02:11Speaker 4: long term and ultimately that's what you know, that's what
- 2:02:13Speaker 4: we did in that situation, ma'am. This has been an
- 2:02:17Speaker 4: outstanding pucket.
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: It has you feel like it elevates the expectation at all.
- 2:02:23Speaker 2: When you make a decision like that, it's like, all right, well,
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: now we need to figure out what our next moves are,
- 2:02:28Speaker 2: whether or not again you're like, I can't go too
- 2:02:30Speaker 2: far into it because it's not like you're going to
- 2:02:31Speaker 2: say what your decisions are going to be. But you
- 2:02:33Speaker 2: make a move like that, it's like, all right, boys,
- 2:02:35Speaker 2: we made the decision. Yeah, let's figure out the way
- 2:02:38Speaker 2: that we make sure we end up being right about this.
- 2:02:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the reality of it. Because it's the quarterback, right,
- 2:02:44Speaker 4: It's the most important position on the team. I mean
- 2:02:47Speaker 4: it really is. Yea, So like yeah, like that at
- 2:02:51Speaker 4: the end of the day, like I'm in charge of
- 2:02:54Speaker 4: myself and you know, our group, we're in charge of
- 2:02:57Speaker 4: filling the most important position on the team. And so yeah,
- 2:03:00Speaker 4: there's some you know, there's there's some there's some pressure
- 2:03:04Speaker 4: that comes along with that, and and however we feel it,
- 2:03:07Speaker 4: it doesn't mean we're going to have an immediate answer.
- 2:03:09Speaker 4: You know this year, you know what I mean. And
- 2:03:11Speaker 4: so but at the end of the day, we have
- 2:03:15Speaker 4: to have an answer, you know, in some form or fashion,
- 2:03:18Speaker 4: you know. And so, yeah, there's pressure that comes along
- 2:03:20Speaker 4: with it. And and again that's also part of the
- 2:03:23Speaker 4: excitement too, is that pressure is finding that guy and uh,
- 2:03:28Speaker 4: you know that will be the next task.
- 2:03:30Speaker 2: Do we have a tear talk? It's almost eight o'clock,
- 2:03:33Speaker 2: said we could, we could just do that, We could
- 2:03:35Speaker 2: just do the tear so, yeah, we can do the
- 2:03:41Speaker 2: tear talk for the interro. Yeah, with the teacher for
- 2:03:43Speaker 2: the intro.
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: I think there's been an incredible podcast.
- 2:03:48Speaker 6: It's been one of my favorites. Good we do Christa,
- 2:03:54Speaker 6: Oh you got the sound treatment.
- 2:03:55Speaker 4: She definitely heard.
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: I almost feel we need you, but I'm thinking I
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: don't know her at all.
- 2:04:02Speaker 4: All right, now, have you enjoyed yourself? Yeah? Wasn't what
- 2:04:05Speaker 4: you thought it would be.
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: Yeah, because I know you were kind of you.
- 2:04:08Speaker 4: We were all excited to be together on this podcast. Yeah,
- 2:04:11Speaker 4: it's I mean it's surreal.
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: Who do you think is going to be listening that
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: we're not aware of that we'll be listening? Like do
- 2:04:16Speaker 1: you think I think, well, you think the owner are
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: gonna be listening, coach me. Daniels M.
- 2:04:23Speaker 4: Probably not.
- 2:04:25Speaker 1: That kind of sucks.
- 2:04:26Speaker 4: That's a tough he I was kind.
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: Of excited to hear. Yeah, probably who will be listening that.
- 2:04:32Speaker 4: There's probably some people that in the Raiders organization that
- 2:04:34Speaker 4: maybe don't listen to Busting with the Boys that are
- 2:04:36Speaker 4: going to listen to it because I'm on it.
- 2:04:42Speaker 6: But yeah, I don't know really getting together. I was excited,
- 2:04:46Speaker 6: like that's the biggest headline out of a fling. Yeah,
- 2:04:50Speaker 6: we can stop right now. Ladies, gentlemen, thank you so much.
