Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / Jose Soriano DEALING, bullpen REELING as Angels win two of three games in Cincinnati
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, Angel fans, Welcome back to Halo territory. I am
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mike d. Giovanna, former La Times Baseball writer and host
- 0:14Speaker 1: of the show, joined by Mark Trumbo, our regular co
- 0:17Speaker 1: host and the former Angel slugger. And Sam Blum of
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Athletic back with us. Welcome back, Sam. How's everybody
- 0:23Speaker 1: doing today?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Great to be back.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Great talent, very talent, and he's still pretty young. So
- 0:32Speaker 1: the Angels took two out of three in Cincinnati this week,
- 0:36Speaker 1: but as often as the case with our Angels, and
- 0:38Speaker 1: it was a little messy and I had a little drama.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Angels are up nine nothing, nothing going into the bottom
- 0:44Speaker 1: of the eighth on Sunday, give up three in the eight,
- 0:48Speaker 1: three more in the ninth on a Eli de la
- 0:50Speaker 1: Cruz through run homer. They have to bring Drew palmerans
- 0:53Speaker 1: into the game to get a couple of big outs,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and Drew was able to close it out, but of
- 0:59Speaker 1: course a closer, Jordan Romano and what was once a
- 1:02Speaker 1: nine run game was warming up. Shouldn't affect his availability
- 1:07Speaker 1: ability for the Yankees series. But how does that kind
- 1:10Speaker 1: of take the edge off what was a pretty good
- 1:11Speaker 1: weekend for the Angels.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Guys, Yes, I don't know you thinks, Okay, I'll let
- 1:17Speaker 2: you go.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I'm gonna be I beat you. I beat you once. Yeah, no, no,
- 1:22Speaker 3: I honestly, it doesn't take the edge off.
- 1:24Speaker 1: No, not really.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Sorry, I know. Another fantastic start, utterly dominant. I can
- 1:29Speaker 3: talk a little more about him in a second. But
- 1:32Speaker 3: that game was in the bag Cincinnati. The record going
- 1:37Speaker 3: into it was pretty respectable, but they're hitting not good. Uh,
- 1:45Speaker 3: and and against Soreanno nobody's is. But at the end
- 1:48Speaker 3: they started to string something together and Bachmann got into
- 1:51Speaker 3: the game. He scuffled a bit, and then unfortunately Palmerantz
- 1:56Speaker 3: gave up a three run homer, uh, necessitating ramon to
- 2:00Speaker 3: come in and pitch.
- 2:02Speaker 1: As you said, so, actually Ramonald didn't pitch, he was
- 2:05Speaker 1: warming Palmeran's got the last one, didn't. Yeah, but yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Nick Salmon too is debut with the Angels this year,
- 2:12Speaker 1: finally up with the team. Also had a rough eighth
- 2:15Speaker 1: inning as well. Chase Silseith had a rough Saturday. And
- 2:20Speaker 1: as you said, Sam Bachman, those are two young arms
- 2:23Speaker 1: who had done pretty well in the first week and
- 2:25Speaker 1: a half two of the season. Mark you think it
- 2:28Speaker 1: was just one of those cases today with Sam where
- 2:31Speaker 1: you know, coming into a game of the Big League,
- 2:34Speaker 1: not a leverage situation, just wasn't attacking hitters. His stuff
- 2:38Speaker 1: seemed okay.
- 2:40Speaker 3: It's kind of one of those weird things. I was
- 2:42Speaker 3: slightly distracted in all honesty, I know, I know Ramond
- 2:45Speaker 3: didn't pitch hearing something the Masters is going on and
- 2:48Speaker 3: all this.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Other stuff.
- 2:51Speaker 3: With Bachman. Yeah, you know, as a team, like the
- 2:56Speaker 3: pitching staff quick notes say that we the Angels are
- 3:01Speaker 3: second in the league and walks, so that unfortunately is
- 3:03Speaker 3: in the cards for many guys. Uh Bakman's not immune
- 3:07Speaker 3: and still set the other day had a rough go
- 3:10Speaker 3: of it. I don't know quite what to make of that,
- 3:13Speaker 3: but you know it it was with Sam. I you know,
- 3:19Speaker 3: it's just pounding the strike zone. It's gonna be the
- 3:21Speaker 3: same rhetoric with him, with Class and with Urania, with
- 3:27Speaker 3: Kokuchi and with Detmer's. I think all these guys are
- 3:31Speaker 3: our candidates to improve in that that regard, because and
- 3:35Speaker 3: on the flip side, the Angels are getting walked at
- 3:37Speaker 3: a just a crazy pace. They had what seven to
- 3:41Speaker 3: nine today the starter, I guess Abbott looks like he
- 3:46Speaker 3: has regressed pretty big an All Star team last year,
- 3:48Speaker 3: and he didn't look sharp at all today. He's usually
- 3:52Speaker 3: got a pretty good fastball, but not the case. They
- 3:54Speaker 3: were all over him and got out to a quick lead.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Would have been nice to to, you know, shut him out,
- 3:59Speaker 3: but it kind of, you know, at the end was
- 4:02Speaker 3: it wasn't as good. But that's they won a series
- 4:04Speaker 3: first time in a long time. It looked like Lackie
- 4:07Speaker 3: was on the last team that won a series in.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Cincinnati, So that's telling me something. Yeah, there's an interesting
- 4:12Speaker 1: stat with the walks from Matt Birt Berchie the Angel
- 4:15Speaker 1: John twenty six walks in this series in Cincinnati, which
- 4:19Speaker 1: tied the franchise records for walks in a three game series.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And I think Zach mettawalk three times today. I'm pretty
- 4:26Speaker 1: sure he hasn't done that too often in his career. Sam,
- 4:28Speaker 1: are you seeing u maybe a new level of patients
- 4:33Speaker 1: from these hitters this year?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Well, I just think the Angels are very much like
- 4:37Speaker 2: a three true outcomes offense, and you know last year
- 4:40Speaker 2: when they struggled, they were they were much more two
- 4:43Speaker 2: true outcomes, right, it was either strikeout or at a
- 4:45Speaker 2: home run. And so when you're walking I mean, you
- 4:47Speaker 2: know what, what I think you saw on this weekend
- 4:50Speaker 2: was a lot of good at bats, and you know
- 4:52Speaker 2: there are there's a tough team to get out, you know,
- 4:54Speaker 2: when they're drawn walks. That first inning today against Dad,
- 4:57Speaker 2: it was kind of just moving the line along, which
- 4:59Speaker 2: I thought was it's a good sign for them, you know.
- 5:02Speaker 2: But I mean, ultimately, I think when you strike out
- 5:04Speaker 2: as much as you as they do, they won't you
- 5:07Speaker 2: won't succeed with that type of offense. I don't think
- 5:09Speaker 2: just hitting home runs, striking out and walking is sustainable.
- 5:12Speaker 2: There's too many rallies that are going to get kind
- 5:14Speaker 2: of just stymied that way. But you know, when when
- 5:17Speaker 2: things are going well, you're walking more. I Mean, it
- 5:19Speaker 2: was not like a really great series to watch in
- 5:21Speaker 2: that regard. I mean, especially on Saturday, it was just
- 5:24Speaker 2: both teams. I think there was like almost like twenty
- 5:25Speaker 2: combined walks and in by bat, hit by pitch, So
- 5:28Speaker 2: just not a very not really good baseball. But yeah,
- 5:30Speaker 2: I mean I think, you know, going back to the bullpen,
- 5:32Speaker 2: that's that's to me going to be their biggest area
- 5:35Speaker 2: of concern. I mean, I think they're overworking them a
- 5:37Speaker 2: little bit. You know, you talk about Chase sill Seth
- 5:39Speaker 2: coming in and just looking like he shouldn't be in
- 5:42Speaker 2: the game, and he's pitched almost like more than half
- 5:45Speaker 2: the game so far. I think, so he's in. He's
- 5:47Speaker 2: in there a lot, you know, and when you have to,
- 5:51Speaker 2: like you said, you're up nine nothing, that's not a
- 5:52Speaker 2: you know, you don't want to have to start using
- 5:54Speaker 2: some of these guys because now you got a lot
- 5:55Speaker 2: of games in a row here for New York, and
- 5:58Speaker 2: you fly all the way back west, and so it's just,
- 6:00Speaker 2: you know, it's a lot of games. You can't be
- 6:02Speaker 2: taxing your bullpen. It's already not like a really big
- 6:05Speaker 2: strength of this team, but you know, if you have,
- 6:08Speaker 2: there are certain elements of the way they're playing right
- 6:10Speaker 2: now that I think are probably better than expected at least,
- 6:12Speaker 2: you know, over the first two weeks.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about this three true outcomes on a
- 6:16Speaker 1: couple of shows recently, and yeah, they're still leaning heavily
- 6:20Speaker 1: toward that type of offense. But I thought the first
- 6:23Speaker 1: inning today they were definitely not a three true outcome team.
- 6:26Speaker 1: They I think they had five singles in that rally.
- 6:31Speaker 1: They moved you know, we talked about how you put
- 6:33Speaker 1: pressure on a defense, and we talked about base running
- 6:36Speaker 1: aggressive base running, but I think just having guys on
- 6:40Speaker 1: base and having guys pitch out of the stretch puts
- 6:42Speaker 1: pressure on a defense. And to me, the biggest ad
- 6:44Speaker 1: bat of the game happened in that first inning. Nolan
- 6:47Speaker 1: shan Well against what we thought going in was a
- 6:50Speaker 1: pretty good left hander, and Andrew Abbott just goes with
- 6:53Speaker 1: a pitch and strokes a nice two runs single in
- 6:56Speaker 1: the less center field, not only scores two, but keeps
- 6:59Speaker 1: that chain moving. And I think they scored with three
- 7:02Speaker 1: or four in that first inning. What do you that?
- 7:05Speaker 1: Was that one of the better at bats we've seen
- 7:07Speaker 1: this here?
- 7:07Speaker 3: Mark, I think you just answered the question. I think
- 7:14Speaker 3: we to do that, but true, you know what it was.
- 7:18Speaker 3: It was nice to see and it's contrary to what
- 7:21Speaker 3: I was maybe going to make this point, Sam, would
- 7:23Speaker 3: you be surprised this is a somewhat of a BTh territory,
- 7:27Speaker 3: but persevont The Angels are first in the league in
- 7:31Speaker 3: under contact, so basically hitting the ball in the air.
- 7:36Speaker 3: They are first in pull oriented contact, They're twenty fifth
- 7:41Speaker 3: in extra velocity. They lead the league in k's in
- 7:43Speaker 3: their fifth in walks. But the first two stats line
- 7:45Speaker 3: up with what and we will get to it in
- 7:47Speaker 3: the fan mail bag. But and you know, many have
- 7:52Speaker 3: noticed they hit the ball in the air and to
- 7:55Speaker 3: the pull side a lot, and the stats confirmed that.
- 7:58Speaker 3: So when I was looking at it, you know, I
- 8:00Speaker 3: expected them to be high. I didn't expect him to
- 8:02Speaker 3: necessarily be in the lead. But they are so that
- 8:05Speaker 3: same approach that we've seen the last couple of years,
- 8:07Speaker 3: despite you know, some new voices. It appears to be
- 8:12Speaker 3: kind of the way that these guys operate, which is
- 8:15Speaker 3: kind of a binge and purge offense. Yeah, you know,
- 8:18Speaker 3: so far, I think they've held their own, but it
- 8:23Speaker 3: can make it tough. And you know, Netto is a
- 8:25Speaker 3: guy that is extremely gifted and extremely talented at pulling
- 8:28Speaker 3: the ball. There's some other guys like Nolan. This was
- 8:30Speaker 3: a nice at bat for him. I think he should
- 8:33Speaker 3: use the whole field. He should stay in the middle
- 8:34Speaker 3: of the field early on. You know, the exit velocities
- 8:37Speaker 3: and the bat speed haven't really proven out. You know,
- 8:41Speaker 3: a quick glance at some of the advanced metrics, you
- 8:44Speaker 3: know they're kind of you know, Nolan, which is not
- 8:48Speaker 3: to say it's a bad thing, but he's I think
- 8:50Speaker 3: he should stick in this realm that at bat right
- 8:53Speaker 3: there is the best version of him. I've seen him
- 8:56Speaker 3: cut loose a little bit more. He's not done a
- 8:58Speaker 3: good job of challenging with the abs. I think he's
- 9:01Speaker 3: Ozer for four and you know, the defense left some
- 9:04Speaker 3: to be what left something to be desired behind classing,
- 9:09Speaker 3: So you know that was, you know, one of those
- 9:12Speaker 3: things still early in the year. But uh Ohapi. A
- 9:15Speaker 3: couple of hits today which was nice to see and Trout.
- 9:17Speaker 3: You know that Trout's hit was actually really cool to me.
- 9:20Speaker 3: That was vintage Trouty. It wasn't lasted, but he stayed
- 9:24Speaker 3: inside it and was able to hit a single up
- 9:26Speaker 3: the middle. He used to get a ton of those,
- 9:29Speaker 3: So it looks like the version of him. I didn't
- 9:32Speaker 3: see too many of those hits last year, so that's
- 9:34Speaker 3: a positive sign. Not so positive. Hilaire smashing a ball
- 9:38Speaker 3: off of Mike's it looked like but I don't know
- 9:42Speaker 3: if you saw that, Sam, but a foul ball.
- 9:43Speaker 1: I did, I did, I did crazy.
- 9:46Speaker 2: It's yeah, man, it's just like Mike Trout needs like
- 9:49Speaker 2: better some better luck. I feel like it's just the
- 9:51Speaker 2: ball is finding him man.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Not in the best ways he did. I think he
- 9:56Speaker 1: was four for thirty three before that RBI double in
- 9:59Speaker 1: the second too. Talk about Yeah, he did pull it,
- 10:01Speaker 1: but he ripped it down the line. I don't know.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Maybe that's a good sign for Trout. He's definitely not
- 10:06Speaker 1: he had a great first couple of games, but it's
- 10:09Speaker 1: definitely doesn't look like the Mike Trout of old. Maybe
- 10:12Speaker 1: that's a sign that he's going to break out a
- 10:14Speaker 1: little bit. We're we take a quick break for a
- 10:16Speaker 1: word from our sponsors, and when we come back, we're
- 10:18Speaker 1: going to talk about the brightest of lights for this
- 10:22Speaker 1: Angel team. Jose Sorriana and welcome back to Halo Territory.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I Mike d Giovanna with Mark Trumbo and Sam Blum. Well,
- 10:31Speaker 1: Jose Sorriano. What a game he had Sunday. Seven innings, pitch,
- 10:35Speaker 1: two hits, zero runs, three walks, ten strikeouts. On the season,
- 10:40Speaker 1: he's now four and zero with a major league best
- 10:44Speaker 1: zero point three to three ERA. In twenty seven innings,
- 10:47Speaker 1: he's given up nine hits, one earned run, thirty one strikeouts,
- 10:52Speaker 1: nine walks, and then this one of those crazy stats
- 10:56Speaker 1: that I'm guessing this was another Matt Birch special. Jose
- 11:01Speaker 1: Soriano is the first player in American League history to
- 11:04Speaker 1: pitch six plus innings with one or fewer runs aloud
- 11:08Speaker 1: and three or three or fewer hits aloud in each
- 11:12Speaker 1: of his first four games of a season.
- 11:14Speaker 2: It's nice, but Matt Birch has has like real, like
- 11:17Speaker 2: really exciting information between them instead of make up something
- 11:21Speaker 2: that makes the Angels look good.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Yeah, good for Matt Birch. I know it is his
- 11:27Speaker 1: Arizona basketball team took a took a tough loss last week,
- 11:30Speaker 1: but good on your Matt Birch for that stat. We've
- 11:33Speaker 1: talked about Soriano being a budding ACE, and clearly he's
- 11:37Speaker 1: the ace of the Angel staff. And you know, just
- 11:40Speaker 1: I want to clarify something for our viewers, Like when
- 11:42Speaker 1: I've talked about, you know, Soriano being a potential ACE,
- 11:46Speaker 1: I've sort of looked at it in the context of
- 11:49Speaker 1: like that Andy McCullough, you know, the Aces project story
- 11:51Speaker 1: for the Athletic Yeah, he's clearly an Angel's best pitcher
- 11:55Speaker 1: right now, but is he starting to get into that
- 11:57Speaker 1: range where we start to think of him as one
- 11:59Speaker 1: of the best pitchers in baseball. Once again, it's only
- 12:02Speaker 1: four starts, but you have to like this kid's trajectory.
- 12:06Speaker 1: What are you guys seeing from this kid? Stuff wise?
- 12:09Speaker 1: And he just looks like a horse out there, And
- 12:12Speaker 1: I was, I was so impressed. He had eighty one
- 12:14Speaker 1: pitches through five innings and you're thinking, oh, man, he's
- 12:17Speaker 1: he's dealing, but he's he's really not efficient. Then he
- 12:19Speaker 1: has a four pitch six on him. So that was
- 12:23Speaker 1: that was really impressive. Impressive to me. What do you
- 12:26Speaker 1: guys like about this guy right now?
- 12:28Speaker 2: I think, yeah, I mean I think it's obviously legit.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I mean, you know, he's you know, it's four starts.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I think this, you know, he's gone from someone who's
- 12:36Speaker 2: like a fringe ase to probably someone who's putting himself
- 12:39Speaker 2: quickly in the you know, all star starting conversation where
- 12:43Speaker 2: you know, you can't even start to think about cy
- 12:44Speaker 2: Young at this point. But he's if you stay on
- 12:46Speaker 2: this trajectory, certainly why not. I think the thing with
- 12:48Speaker 2: Soriano is he's cutting back on the walks, he's using
- 12:50Speaker 2: his fastball more, just leating more strikeouts. He's you know,
- 12:55Speaker 2: going deeper in games, working efficiently. I think he's got
- 12:57Speaker 2: twenty seven innings in the first four starts to me,
- 13:00Speaker 2: the thing that you know, we've seen from Soriano that
- 13:03Speaker 2: you kind of have to keep an eye out for
- 13:04Speaker 2: is when he gets later in the season, he's that's
- 13:06Speaker 2: when he kind of starts to you know, has had
- 13:08Speaker 2: his struggles. So you know, you want to be cognizant
- 13:11Speaker 2: of how much he's pitching. You know, at this pace,
- 13:13Speaker 2: he's probably close you know, close to like a two
- 13:15Speaker 2: hundred something getting pace, so you know, to keep him
- 13:20Speaker 2: good for the whole season, I think would be something
- 13:21Speaker 2: they need to be cognizant of. But right now, yeah,
- 13:23Speaker 2: I mean he's he's pitching better than anyone in the
- 13:26Speaker 2: game right now. There's no there's no doubt about it.
- 13:28Speaker 2: And I mean he's just almost impossible to score off.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I think Baldwin hit a homer like like just kind
- 13:33Speaker 2: of it took like a ball above the zone and
- 13:35Speaker 2: just kind of turned on it. But other than that,
- 13:37Speaker 2: he isn't even allowed I mean anything, I mean really anything.
- 13:39Speaker 2: He's not walking anybody. He's just kind of dominating.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Mark. You've talked about his use of the four seamer
- 13:47Speaker 1: a lot more of this year. Is that setting up
- 13:50Speaker 1: his off speeds, the splitter and the knuckle curve a
- 13:53Speaker 1: little better.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Well, in true fashion for us, the timing today he
- 13:58Speaker 3: went back to more sinkers. So yeah, right. You know
- 14:03Speaker 3: what he did do is is he's still using He's
- 14:05Speaker 3: got a four pitch mix, and I think he's really
- 14:07Speaker 3: refined it. I'm guarantee somebody or you know, this is
- 14:12Speaker 3: not by accident. His pitch usage has changed and his
- 14:17Speaker 3: knuckle curve makes me glad I'm retired because I just
- 14:20Speaker 3: don't see anybody hit that pitch right now. It is
- 14:23Speaker 3: absolutely filthy. It is as good at breaking ball as
- 14:27Speaker 3: I've seen in a very long time. And when he does,
- 14:30Speaker 3: you know, both fastballs are very effective. He was a
- 14:33Speaker 3: death on left handed hitters today. One of the advanced
- 14:39Speaker 3: stats or you know they give grades out at the end,
- 14:42Speaker 3: I'll give credit or maybe in the footnotes, but he
- 14:45Speaker 3: got an A plus against lefties. It's it's a newer expert,
- 14:49Speaker 3: but it does a nice job of breaking down what
- 14:51Speaker 3: what guys are doing. I think the opposing pitchure go
- 14:54Speaker 3: an F today and you know grades the stuff plus
- 14:57Speaker 3: and the outing as a whole. So know what's was
- 15:01Speaker 3: not graded quite as high the other day stuff wise,
- 15:05Speaker 3: but then you know, because he was able to limit
- 15:07Speaker 3: the damage and he also did a very nice job,
- 15:08Speaker 3: very good game out of him. So you know, as
- 15:11Speaker 3: far as Soriano, there's no question unless you know, I
- 15:15Speaker 3: don't see any reason why he would take a huge
- 15:17Speaker 3: step back, even a slight regression. It's still you know,
- 15:22Speaker 3: there's there's not too many guys. I mean, he probably
- 15:23Speaker 3: he might be the best pitcher in the game currently.
- 15:26Speaker 3: It's four starts in too early to YadA YadA. But
- 15:29Speaker 3: you know what, find somebody better, find somebody else than you. Guys,
- 15:32Speaker 3: are you know, struggling that mightily.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Against Do you think it's the split against the lefties
- 15:38Speaker 1: that's making him so effective or or is it more
- 15:41Speaker 1: pitch mix can you can you tell?
- 15:44Speaker 3: As a hitter, I think the thing that makes guys
- 15:47Speaker 3: really tough in the aces, and I've said it before
- 15:50Speaker 3: is the ability to have three pitches. Now he's got four.
- 15:53Speaker 3: The split is not used quite as often, but you
- 15:58Speaker 3: never know what's coming, and he's probably a guy that
- 16:01Speaker 3: can lean on. He is mixing it up early. It's
- 16:04Speaker 3: kind of a newer thing in years past, you know,
- 16:07Speaker 3: and I heard Showalter talking about it the other day, Bucksholto.
- 16:10Speaker 3: That is with Kurt Chilling trying to get through three
- 16:11Speaker 3: innings with his fastball alone. You just don't see that anymore.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Guys don't do that. Soriano doesn't need to do that.
- 16:17Speaker 3: But him and o'happy you are really a good, good
- 16:20Speaker 3: thing right now. Yeah, you know why or how. Maybe
- 16:23Speaker 3: we can get a little more info, maybe you guys
- 16:26Speaker 3: can ask, But if he keeps it going, it's awesome.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Now he's not going to be able to pitch this
- 16:31Speaker 3: coming series against the New York Yankees, so some of
- 16:35Speaker 3: the other guys that have been you know okay so
- 16:38Speaker 3: far are going to have to step up.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Yeah, well we'll talk a little more about Jack o'hannowitz
- 16:42Speaker 1: at a great start on Friday. But you mentioned Logan o'happy,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and I want to talk a little bit about Saturday's game. Logan.
- 16:49Speaker 1: It just seems to be a magnet for controversy this year.
- 16:53Speaker 1: There was that big, you know, a failure to challenge
- 16:55Speaker 1: in Houston, but I think it was the eighth inning
- 17:00Speaker 1: check swing on a two strike pitch, ball goes back
- 17:03Speaker 1: to the backstop. He's looking back at the or the
- 17:06Speaker 1: first base ump to get some kind of ruling and
- 17:10Speaker 1: he's laid out of the box. He uh, I guess
- 17:14Speaker 1: he actually beat the throat at first, but then he's
- 17:16Speaker 1: ruled out for being inside the baseline. Leads to Kurt
- 17:19Speaker 1: Suzuki's first injection of the year. Well, that just seemed
- 17:23Speaker 1: like a whole messed up play from the start. I
- 17:26Speaker 1: assume did you guys see that play and how did
- 17:29Speaker 1: you sort of read it?
- 17:31Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean, I mean I get it because like
- 17:34Speaker 2: your your your instinct is to see what the umpire says.
- 17:37Speaker 2: You don't want to maybe tip your hand that you
- 17:38Speaker 2: think you swung. I don't know, but I think in general,
- 17:41Speaker 2: like your your instinct needs to be to run out
- 17:43Speaker 2: of the box. On that play, now, I mean they
- 17:47Speaker 2: called they called him safe and it led to the ejection.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I mean, looking at the replay, looked like he was
- 17:50Speaker 2: out anyway. So I don't I don't know, but I mean,
- 17:53Speaker 2: to me, this is just like the instinct is, you know,
- 17:56Speaker 2: needs to be just to run.
- 17:58Speaker 3: It's you know.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I mean I think he had a really tough time
- 18:01Speaker 2: with like sil Seth. I mean there was like I
- 18:02Speaker 2: think three or four wild pitches in that sequence.
- 18:04Speaker 1: May.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so it was just it was it was a
- 18:08Speaker 2: little rough go that Saturday was was just an ugly
- 18:10Speaker 2: game for them. But I mean with all the walks,
- 18:14Speaker 2: with with the wild pitches, with yeah, with that mistake. Yeah,
- 18:18Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I mean just you see it
- 18:20Speaker 2: a couple I mean, I don't I mean, hotpies, like God,
- 18:22Speaker 2: some good instincts when it comes like challenging pitches. I
- 18:24Speaker 2: think overall is really high percentage on that front. But yeah,
- 18:27Speaker 2: I mean there's just some times he does things and
- 18:29Speaker 2: you're like, that feels like it's just you know, it's
- 18:32Speaker 2: not clicking perfectly. But you know, it's hard to judge
- 18:35Speaker 2: him too on some of the stuff.
- 18:36Speaker 1: But I don't know Mark is as a hitter, is
- 18:40Speaker 1: it just natural to look to that first base hope
- 18:42Speaker 1: in that situation.
- 18:44Speaker 3: It's an awkward play. Like Sam said, I probably wouldn't
- 18:49Speaker 3: be too keen to err on the side of admitting well,
- 18:53Speaker 3: I guess it would be a strikeout. But the hustle
- 18:57Speaker 3: was the effort, you know, less, something to be desired.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I think, you know, there were some comments about it online,
- 19:05Speaker 3: as there are comments about literally everything that player you
- 19:08Speaker 3: know I'm not I don't have a strong opinion on that.
- 19:11Speaker 3: One thing I would like to see improve is the
- 19:13Speaker 3: blocking of the balls. The one Knie dance. It's if
- 19:18Speaker 3: you've listened at all, you know it's not a favorite
- 19:20Speaker 3: of mine, you know, And ultimately what I see are
- 19:23Speaker 3: just a lot basically only glove saves. You know, there
- 19:26Speaker 3: have been some, but to me it's just you. I mean,
- 19:29Speaker 3: you've done this for forty years. You know, you've seen
- 19:33Speaker 3: some of the best catchers in the game. Do you
- 19:35Speaker 3: think it's as reliable to lean on the glove trying
- 19:37Speaker 3: to essentially like a first basement kind of piket as
- 19:40Speaker 3: opposed to using the whole body and you have all
- 19:42Speaker 3: that gear.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I mean, most catchers, as when I was coming up
- 19:47Speaker 1: as a writer, they're always taught to shift their body,
- 19:50Speaker 1: you know, to block that ball in the dirt, get
- 19:52Speaker 1: your body in front of it. And yeah, I mean
- 19:55Speaker 1: when you lunch for the ball with your glove on
- 19:57Speaker 1: that like if you're on one knee and Alrighty throws
- 20:01Speaker 1: a ball into the left handed batter's box and you
- 20:03Speaker 1: lunch for with your glove. That those catchers used to
- 20:05Speaker 1: be called lazy and now it's just part of the game.
- 20:08Speaker 1: So it's kind of strange how it. Yeah, we probably
- 20:11Speaker 1: need to do a whole show on catching. I don't
- 20:13Speaker 1: know if we need to get Sosh back on, but
- 20:14Speaker 1: it might last for three hours if we did.
- 20:17Speaker 3: But yeah, well, the one knee. The idea is trying
- 20:19Speaker 3: to get underneath those pitches and with the abs like
- 20:22Speaker 3: I don't think I think umpires are hyper aware. They
- 20:25Speaker 3: should probably always have been, but probably are really on
- 20:28Speaker 3: guard for these close pitches now. Yeah, so I'd like
- 20:31Speaker 3: to see the game as a whole what what you know,
- 20:34Speaker 3: I need to watch some other teams and see how
- 20:35Speaker 3: their catchers are doing it. One thing too, it's leaving
- 20:38Speaker 3: him exposed to a lot of foul tips. I think
- 20:40Speaker 3: he's worn a couple. He fast, he moved off the
- 20:43Speaker 3: hips and thighs and stuff.
- 20:45Speaker 1: He finally moved his hand behind him after spring training.
- 20:48Speaker 1: That was good. Yeah, I feel like I'm okay with
- 20:50Speaker 1: the one knee when the bases are empty. But when
- 20:52Speaker 1: there's guy's on, man, you need mobility. You got maybe
- 20:55Speaker 1: a potential stolen base threat. You got to you got
- 20:59Speaker 1: to be on your toes literally and figurably. Uh, we'll
- 21:02Speaker 1: get to Jack Ky in a bit, but we got
- 21:04Speaker 1: to talk about young George Claus and again rough day Saturday.
- 21:08Speaker 1: A lot of a lot of chatter on social media.
- 21:11Speaker 1: What is this kid even doing here? You know, full disclosure,
- 21:17Speaker 1: I don't know the Angel system as well as I
- 21:19Speaker 1: used to. I probably need to learn a little more. Sam.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Is there really any other option at this point besides
- 21:25Speaker 1: young George and for Mark? Let's start with you, Sam,
- 21:28Speaker 1: what are the what are the dangers? Leave? Well, they
- 21:31Speaker 1: send them down today, but you know, if you leave
- 21:34Speaker 1: this kid exposed for for more beatings like that just
- 21:38Speaker 1: doesn't seem good in the long run.
- 21:39Speaker 3: We got this one.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Well, this just goes back to this is my number
- 21:45Speaker 2: one criticism of the Angels. I mean, to me, there's
- 21:47Speaker 2: a lot I don't know if that's true, there's a
- 21:48Speaker 2: lot of criticisms, but to me, this is this is
- 21:51Speaker 2: right up there because you've you know you first off,
- 21:53Speaker 2: I mean, he's throwing Keith's i think sixty eight pitches
- 21:56Speaker 2: in the first two innings, so you're you're not and
- 21:57Speaker 2: then they stick him back out there in the thirty
- 21:59Speaker 2: immediately walks another guy.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Again.
- 22:01Speaker 2: They're making decisions based on their needs in this moment,
- 22:04Speaker 2: and ultimately the reason why they have to use him
- 22:06Speaker 2: in there, that they're choosing to use him, you know,
- 22:09Speaker 2: is they don't really have a ton of other options
- 22:11Speaker 2: on their forty men roster, because their forty men roster
- 22:13Speaker 2: is stocked with other pictures just like him, who are young,
- 22:16Speaker 2: who probably have come up at one point or another
- 22:18Speaker 2: and struggled and want in some capacity or aren't ready.
- 22:20Speaker 2: And you know, they also didn't really go out and
- 22:22Speaker 2: acquire any starting pitching that was usable right now, you know,
- 22:26Speaker 2: Alec Manoa, I mean, this is a guy who doesn't
- 22:29Speaker 2: look like he's really eating a big lea picture at
- 22:32Speaker 2: this point. I mean, you know, we'll see what happens.
- 22:33Speaker 2: But kind of the early early returns on him from
- 22:36Speaker 2: spring training, Grayson Rodriguez injury history always.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Was going to be a risk.
- 22:41Speaker 2: They didn't really go ahead and just kind of get
- 22:42Speaker 2: a guy that can eat innings, that can be a
- 22:45Speaker 2: fifth guy, and that's really what they needed. And so
- 22:47Speaker 2: instead you're kind of piecing together with your top prospects
- 22:49Speaker 2: who aren't really ready. And I don't you know, I'm
- 22:52Speaker 2: not saying George Clausen will will be damaged forever by
- 22:55Speaker 2: like this pretty difficult experience of coming up and just
- 22:58Speaker 2: walking everybody in his two starts, But it just doesn't
- 23:01Speaker 2: do anything for the team.
- 23:02Speaker 3: It doesn't do anything for him.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And the only reason they're doing is because they don't
- 23:05Speaker 2: really have anybody else that they can just go and
- 23:07Speaker 2: stick in that rotation, and now they're gonna probably have
- 23:09Speaker 2: I mean, it's the same thing with Ryan Johnson. His
- 23:11Speaker 2: first start was kind of mirroring the first two starts
- 23:13Speaker 2: by crossing a lot of walks. It looks like a
- 23:16Speaker 2: guy who wasn't ready to be starting big league games.
- 23:19Speaker 2: So yeah, that's that's my takeaway. I think the Angels
- 23:22Speaker 2: just continuously do damage to a lot of their young
- 23:24Speaker 2: starting pitching. Now you see Kohanowitz, Hopefully.
- 23:26Speaker 3: He's turning a corner.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Hopefully there's you know, there's this guy's figured something out.
- 23:31Speaker 2: You know, there's good pitching coaches maybe at least in
- 23:34Speaker 2: the major leagues right now that are you know, be
- 23:36Speaker 2: able to put their stamp on him. But you know,
- 23:39Speaker 2: I still, I mean, I think he's another kind of
- 23:41Speaker 2: case of someone that came up a little bit quick
- 23:42Speaker 2: and didn't do not do very well at the start.
- 23:44Speaker 2: So at least his first few first few addings. So
- 23:47Speaker 2: I think this is just an issue with their system.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I think that a lot of people internally feel the
- 23:51Speaker 2: same way about this. I'm not speaking out of turn.
- 23:53Speaker 2: I mean I think that that they they make this
- 23:55Speaker 2: mistake at their own peril. And it's you know, it's
- 23:58Speaker 2: exciting when a couple guys do well, but over the
- 24:00Speaker 2: long term, there are reasons why this Perrymanazien in this
- 24:03Speaker 2: front office have to have struggled to develop good starting pitching.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And you know, I know people are gonna point to
- 24:08Speaker 2: Jose Souriano. I said, the last time I was on here,
- 24:10Speaker 2: the first thing that this front office did was let
- 24:11Speaker 2: Jose Soriano walk to the pitsic pirates. So they are
- 24:14Speaker 2: fortunate to happen back and they have developed him. But
- 24:17Speaker 2: you know, they're lucky that they got the chance.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I give them credit. They send George down today or Sunday,
- 24:23Speaker 1: and you think two starts is not going to be
- 24:27Speaker 1: as damaging as damaging to his psyche psyche mark as
- 24:31Speaker 1: maybe if if he let him, you know, wear it
- 24:33Speaker 1: for three, four or five starts like this.
- 24:37Speaker 3: I don't think it's you don't know, I don't know
- 24:41Speaker 3: he seems pretty resilient. He said the right things. He
- 24:44Speaker 3: owned it. Here's one thing that I can offer, And
- 24:47Speaker 3: I asked the next teammate who was excellent with pitching mechanics,
- 24:51Speaker 3: because I saw it myself and I wasn't, you know,
- 24:53Speaker 3: as I wasn't a pitcher. People like to pounce on,
- 24:56Speaker 3: you know, those that get out of line. But with
- 24:59Speaker 3: the mechanics, what I've seeing is his glove side. His
- 25:01Speaker 3: glove in particular, Gooby talked about his front side flying open.
- 25:05Speaker 3: But what I saw, and this is getting technical, but
- 25:07Speaker 3: apparently people like this stuff. He really doesn't have any anchor,
- 25:11Speaker 3: meaning his glove. Mark Pryor would be the extreme example.
- 25:15Speaker 3: It was a Tom House method. But your glove is
- 25:17Speaker 3: kind of stopping your momentum, but you've got to keep
- 25:19Speaker 3: it in front of the chest. With George, he is
- 25:23Speaker 3: not his soft. What I was told is he's got
- 25:25Speaker 3: a very soft front side leading to his head getting
- 25:29Speaker 3: significantly over onto the left side of his body if
- 25:32Speaker 3: you look at a shot from behind, and that is
- 25:35Speaker 3: a very difficult way to throw strikes repeatedly. So his
- 25:39Speaker 3: whole momentum is kind of going off to the left.
- 25:41Speaker 3: And yes, his shoulder is too. But everything else, and
- 25:45Speaker 3: what I was told is probably a byproduct of chasing
- 25:48Speaker 3: velocity max effort. And I personally think he'd be a
- 25:52Speaker 3: lot more effective, maybe ninety three to ninety six. But
- 25:56Speaker 3: the stuff and all this stuff, plus you know, you
- 25:59Speaker 3: grate out really well when you're sitting at ninety eight.
- 26:01Speaker 3: But for command purposes, I very few guys really benefit from,
- 26:07Speaker 3: you know, just going out at full bore. I think
- 26:09Speaker 3: George would be a guy that that you know, he
- 26:11Speaker 3: needs to play with it. He needs to find a
- 26:13Speaker 3: reliable pitch. Maybe it's a cutter, maybe it's something else,
- 26:16Speaker 3: but he can't get just you know, behind in these
- 26:18Speaker 3: counts and these four pitch walks, and you know it
- 26:23Speaker 3: needs to start looking more like Soriano where and I
- 26:26Speaker 3: said it before, he's probably a guy that could get
- 26:28Speaker 3: away with setting up or with logan setting up down
- 26:31Speaker 3: the middle. You don't need to work corners. There's no
- 26:33Speaker 3: reason to because he's not capable of hitting them at
- 26:35Speaker 3: this point. Anyway, you know, he's got a ways to go.
- 26:39Speaker 3: I think Urania has a further was to go. Kaiten Dana,
- 26:43Speaker 3: I'm not sure where he is. Sam Aldegery rough go
- 26:48Speaker 3: of it so far. So I think a lot of
- 26:50Speaker 3: people have noticed that we would have benefited and I
- 26:53Speaker 3: say we the Angels from having an additional Sobali type starter,
- 26:58Speaker 3: even a Hendrick Kyle Hendricks eating in. You need somebody
- 27:00Speaker 3: to eat those innings and keep you someone in these
- 27:03Speaker 3: games to give your offense a chance. And Ryan Johnson
- 27:07Speaker 3: and George have really struggled in these games, have gotten
- 27:09Speaker 3: out of reach.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, well we'll close the show with another bright spot
- 27:12Speaker 1: in the rotation. Jack Ohanowitz got that series in Cincinnati
- 27:16Speaker 1: after a great start seven innings, pitch, two hits, one
- 27:19Speaker 1: earned run, four walks, a little high, two strikeouts, out
- 27:23Speaker 1: pitched a pretty good pitcher and Chase Burns and attend
- 27:26Speaker 1: to win over the Reds. Hey, what are you guys
- 27:29Speaker 1: seeing from from Jack? And we've talked a little bit
- 27:33Speaker 1: about his I think his pitch mix has changed a
- 27:36Speaker 1: little bit. Mark, how would you evaluate to start so far?
- 27:39Speaker 1: And I'd like to hear what Sam Blum thinks.
- 27:46Speaker 2: No, I mean, listen, you know, I think Jack o'onowitz
- 27:50Speaker 2: is a guy who can make a make a difference
- 27:52Speaker 2: in this rotation. He's kind of like the swing guy
- 27:54Speaker 2: for them. In my opinion of if he's going to struggle.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I mean him and Debtmers are kind of in that boat.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I think, like if if these guys are I mean,
- 28:01Speaker 2: if Cohanowitz, who was probably worst starter in baseball last
- 28:05Speaker 2: year for as long as he was in the rotation,
- 28:07Speaker 2: you know, if he's gonna be that guy, if he's
- 28:08Speaker 2: going to be close to that guy. And I think
- 28:10Speaker 2: this is gonna be a really long season for the
- 28:11Speaker 2: Angels if they have you know, you know, you have
- 28:13Speaker 2: story on and you know Kakuchi's gonna at the very
- 28:15Speaker 2: minimum give the innings be somewhat solid. Like if you
- 28:18Speaker 2: have a couple other guys that are keeping you in games,
- 28:20Speaker 2: they have a chance to overperform. I think what at
- 28:23Speaker 2: least certainly what I expected of them this year and
- 28:24Speaker 2: what others did. But you know, I mean Kanowitz, I
- 28:28Speaker 2: think he's had three starts. He's you know, his first
- 28:30Speaker 2: one was really rough, but he really locked in, you know,
- 28:33Speaker 2: against against the Reds, and I mean this is I mean,
- 28:37Speaker 2: he's like, he's the kind of pitcher that people kind
- 28:39Speaker 2: of doubt as a starter. Can he you know, does
- 28:41Speaker 2: he have their pitch mix, does he you know, can
- 28:43Speaker 2: he get strikeouts? Can he miss bats. You know, he
- 28:46Speaker 2: didn't always need to do that in his first stint
- 28:48Speaker 2: with the big leagues. I don't think he needs to
- 28:51Speaker 2: be that guy to be able to, you know, last
- 28:53Speaker 2: as a starting pitcher. He can be efficient. He can
- 28:56Speaker 2: work seven eight innings and keep it below one hundred
- 28:58Speaker 2: pitches if he's you know, generating the contact that he
- 29:00Speaker 2: needs to. So yeah, I mean that's what we saw
- 29:02Speaker 2: on Friday. I think there's there's an avenue for that
- 29:04Speaker 2: to exist in his game, and you know, for me,
- 29:07Speaker 2: I I hope, you know, for him that he's able
- 29:10Speaker 2: to figure it out and be be someone that's you know,
- 29:13Speaker 2: not dragging the team and can actually really helped them.
- 29:17Speaker 3: What do you got, Mark, I, I've been high on
- 29:21Speaker 3: him all year, taking any credit. I liked some of
- 29:24Speaker 3: the you know, social clips I saw over the Winner.
- 29:26Speaker 3: It looked like a better delivery in my opinion. He's
- 29:29Speaker 3: a big guy, he's got a lot, you know, a
- 29:31Speaker 3: lot of moving parts, and he's kind of I really
- 29:33Speaker 3: talked about it as for whatever reason, I think as
- 29:36Speaker 3: he doesn't generate as many whiffs, but power pitcher, he
- 29:39Speaker 3: throws upper nineties and he's got an improving breaking ball.
- 29:42Speaker 3: So I think the pieces are all there.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Sam.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Maybe maybe it was I'm a guy on the couch
- 29:46Speaker 3: watching now, I'm not plugged in, but uh, it didn't
- 29:51Speaker 3: well last year, you were there, everyone knows you were there.
- 29:57Speaker 3: It seemed like Ron Washington and him didn't. Maybe there
- 30:00Speaker 3: it's not a sensational story there, but a lot of
- 30:02Speaker 3: frustration at times and it's probably just easy struggled on
- 30:05Speaker 3: the mound, but it just didn't seem like he last
- 30:08Speaker 3: year really got any momentum going and a lot of
- 30:11Speaker 3: remember some when he got taken out of the game,
- 30:13Speaker 3: it looked like he was angry and as he should
- 30:15Speaker 3: have been, but over the top a little bit. I
- 30:17Speaker 3: kind of wondered if there was friction that was palpable
- 30:21Speaker 3: or just part of the game.
- 30:23Speaker 2: I mean, I think that there was maybe some frustration
- 30:26Speaker 2: for the fact that like he was, you know, he
- 30:27Speaker 2: came in and felt I think he felt like you
- 30:29Speaker 2: needed to miss a lot of bats and like that.
- 30:30Speaker 2: I think there. I mean, it's it's tough to say
- 30:32Speaker 2: if there was like tons of frustration with Wash and
- 30:35Speaker 2: obviously didn't manage most of the season last year.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I think yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I mean, to some extent, I think there was you know,
- 30:43Speaker 2: some friction between just players in general and the coaching
- 30:46Speaker 2: staff at times, and it was just was an ugly year.
- 30:50Speaker 2: It was you know, it didn't play out the way
- 30:52Speaker 2: that they at least kind of telegraphed. But yeah, I mean,
- 30:55Speaker 2: I don't want to speak it too authoritatively on that,
- 30:58Speaker 2: particularly because I don't you know, I don't know exactly
- 31:00Speaker 2: what was in everyone's head. But you know, I think
- 31:02Speaker 2: that Kohana, who's coming in and maybe feeling like he
- 31:05Speaker 2: needed to be a different type of starting pitcher than
- 31:08Speaker 2: the one that had been pretty successful in the like
- 31:09Speaker 2: the latter part of twenty twenty four, and now he
- 31:12Speaker 2: needed to miss more bats. He ended up walking just
- 31:13Speaker 2: a ton of guys last year, and you know, I
- 31:16Speaker 2: think the frustration off anything is probably more on himself.
- 31:19Speaker 2: You know, we're seeing him change things up a little
- 31:21Speaker 2: bit this year, and you know, threw a change him
- 31:23Speaker 2: more and just be you know, a little bit different picture.
- 31:26Speaker 2: And I don't know, I think he can pitch to
- 31:27Speaker 2: contact pretty effectively, and that's what keeps him in games longer,
- 31:30Speaker 2: and you know, as long as he's not allowing like
- 31:33Speaker 2: home runs and really hard contact like he was for
- 31:35Speaker 2: long periods of last season.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Yeah, second least home runs allowed Angels pitchers.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Yeah, well they have two ground ball pitchers, so they
- 31:43Speaker 2: have two guys that just only allow grounders.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Yeah, they've actually had some pretty good stats. I wrote
- 31:48Speaker 1: a few of him down there. Well, they're leading major
- 31:53Speaker 1: leagues and walks, they're leading the major leagues and strikeouts.
- 31:58Speaker 1: They're categories tied for third home runs, so you know,
- 32:04Speaker 1: two of those three true outcomes aren't all terrible. And
- 32:08Speaker 1: they're pitching has only allowed ten home runs, tied for
- 32:11Speaker 1: the second fewest. They've struck out one hundred and forty
- 32:14Speaker 1: six and Soriano has a lot to do with that,
- 32:16Speaker 1: tied for six. They've walked eighty six, second most in baseball,
- 32:22Speaker 1: which seems kind of strange. And the era is about
- 32:25Speaker 1: three night it's three nine nine going into the Yankee Series,
- 32:28Speaker 1: so right about middle of the pack. But yeah, there's
- 32:31Speaker 1: some good things going on. They're five hundred, which you know,
- 32:34Speaker 1: we've talked about it. A five hundred record would be
- 32:36Speaker 1: a major step in the right direction for this team
- 32:39Speaker 1: this year. We'll close the show with that. Thanks for
- 32:43Speaker 1: joining us, Please like and subscribe, and Angels will open
- 32:46Speaker 1: a four game set in Yankee Stadium Monday night, and
- 32:49Speaker 1: I'm sure we'll be talking about that later in the week.
- 32:52Speaker 1: We'll see you next time on Halo Territory.
