- 6:09Jennifer Davis: Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.
- 6:20Jennifer Davis: And today's question is: Before roads were built, how did people and goods get around the Redmond area?
- 6:29Jennifer Davis: Was it A, horse-drawn sleds on frozen lakes; B, flat-bottomed steamboats on the Sammamish River; C, canoe-only portage trails; or D, a zip line between Redmond and
- 6:45Dan Schulz: Absolutely.
- 6:46Dan Schulz: Absolutely.
- 6:48Dan Schulz: Final, final answer.
- 6:49Dan Schulz: It has to be a zip line.
- 6:51Dan Schulz: How great would that be?
- 6:54Jennifer Davis: Wait, Dan, I didn't even give you any time yet.
- 6:56Jennifer Davis: You just, you're a hot...
- 6:58Jennifer Davis: You're really going with zip line.
- 7:00Jennifer Davis: Is that true?
- 7:01Jennifer Davis: Or you went
- 7:02Dan Schulz: no.
- 7:02Dan Schulz: Give me, give me some time and I'll actually take it seriously, but I really would like to have zipline as main transportation.
- 7:09Dan Schulz: I'd like to do a cross-country zipline trail.
- 7:12Dan Schulz: I'd like to go from Redmond to New York City on a zipline
- 7:17Jennifer Davis: All right, Dan, your time starts now
- 7:19Dan Schulz: Okay, horse-drawn sleds on frozen lakes.
- 7:22Dan Schulz: It can't be that because that would mean we'd only have stuff moving in the winter.
- 7:27Dan Schulz: Flat-bottomed steamboats on the Sammamish.
- 7:30Dan Schulz: Okay, canoe-only portage trails.
- 7:33Dan Schulz: I'm going with canoe-only portage trails.
- 7:36Dan Schulz: Life was hard back then.
- 7:38Jennifer Davis: well, Dan, you are incorrect again.
- 7:41Jennifer Davis: No, the answer is B, flat-bottomed steamboats on the Sammamish River.
- 7:46Jennifer Davis: In Redmond's earliest days, the forests really were thick and the roads so few that flat-bottomed steamboats were the only practical way to get around.
- 7:57Jennifer Davis: They chugged up and down the Sammamish River and crisscrossed Lake Sammamish carrying passengers and goods.
- 8:03Jennifer Davis: The steamboat era ended in 1916 when the Chittenden Locks opened and lowered local waterways by nine feet, making the river too shallow for the boats.
- 8:16Dan Schulz: Before we get into the rumor mill, here is something most homeowners never think about.
- 8:21Dan Schulz: You could have a water leak right now and not even know it.
- 8:25Dan Schulz: Underground leaks don't show up like a burst pipe.
- 8:28Dan Schulz: There's no water on the floor.
- 8:30Dan Schulz: Your water bill just quietly creeps up month after month until one day you're paying double, and you're wondering what happened.

- 9:24Jennifer Davis: this week's rumor is an interesting one We've heard from a couple of sources that a Bellevue bartender who's been running zero-proof cocktail pop-ups for the past two years may be looking at Redmond for a permanent location.
- 9:39Jennifer Davis: The concept isn't a traditional bar with a mocktail menu.
- 9:43Jennifer Davis: The entire business would be built around alcohol-free cocktails and a full cocktail bar experience.
- 9:50Jennifer Davis: What we don't know is whether Redmond will actually land the location or where it might go if it does.
- 9:56Jennifer Davis: The question is, would a dedicated zero-proof cocktail bar work in Redmond?
