- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:23Good. Morning.
- 0:30Our scripture this morning is taken from the book of First
- 0:33Corinthians. We'll begin in chapter 12.
- 0:37We'll begin with verse 27, and we'll be reading through chapter
- 0:3914, verse one. This first verse actually sounds
- 0:44like Paul is talking directly to us this morning.
- 0:47Here it is. Now you are the body of Christ,
- 0:51and each one of you is a part of it.
- 0:54And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles,
- 0:592nd profits, third teachers, then workers of miracles.
- 1:03Also those having gifts of healing, those able to help
- 1:07others, those with gifts of administration, and those
- 1:10speaking in different kinds of tongues.
- 1:13Are all apostles, Are all profits?
- 1:16Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
- 1:20Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak tongues?
- 1:25Do all interpret, but eagerly desire the greater gifts.
- 1:30And now I will show you the most excellent way.
- 1:34If I speak in tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I
- 1:38am only a resounding gong or a clanging symbol.
- 1:42If I had the gift of prophecy, and can fathom all mysteries and
- 1:45all knowledge, and if I have faith it can move mountains, but
- 1:49have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the
- 1:54poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I
- 1:58gain nothing. Love is patient.
- 2:02Love is kind. It does not envy, it does not
- 2:05boast. It is not proud.
- 2:07It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily anger.
- 2:12He keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil,
- 2:16but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always
- 2:20trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
- 2:25Love never fails, but where there are prophecies they will
- 2:28cease, where there are tongues they will be stilled, and where
- 2:33there is knowledge it will pass away.
- 2:35For we know in part, and we prophecy in part.
- 2:39But when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.
- 2:42When I was a child I talked like a child.
- 2:45I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.
- 2:48When I became a man I put childish ways behind me.
- 2:53Now we see but a poor reflection, as in a mirror.
- 2:56Then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part.
- 3:00Then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
- 3:05And now these three remain faith, hope, and love.
- 3:09But the greatest of these is love.
- 3:12And one verse in chapter 14. Follow the way of love and
- 3:17eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
- 3:23This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 3:25Thanks be to God, man. Thanks, Carrie.
- 3:31Imagine with me for a moment that you've gone out to eat at a
- 3:37restaurant and you order a big juicy cheeseburger with bacon
- 3:46and mushrooms and onion straws and BBQ sauce.
- 3:51Anyone just decide to do something different for lunch,
- 3:54right? Anyway, your burger comes out
- 3:57and it looks amazing and it smells terrific and you take
- 4:04that first bite and oh man, it just tastes so good.
- 4:10So you go in for another bite, bite #2 and there it is.
- 4:18Your burger isn't ruined, but it's close because someone put
- 4:23Pickles on your cheeseburger and you were pretty sure the
- 4:30description didn't say anything about Pickles.
- 4:34Anyone ever have that experience or similar experience?
- 4:39It might not be Pickles for you, but I think you get the idea.
- 4:44I think when we come to chapter 13 of First Corinthians, it can
- 4:51feel a little bit like biting into a a a burger and getting a
- 4:55pickle that you didn't expect. This famous love chapter, the
- 5:00passage that we read at weddings when we extol the virtues and
- 5:05characteristics of love. This must be proof that someone
- 5:10just threw the Bible together from a bunch of unrelated
- 5:14ancient texts, right? I mean, who would stick this
- 5:17beautiful exposition about love in between 1st Corinthians 12
- 5:25and 1st Corinthians 14, both of which are part of Paul's
- 5:29discussion of spiritual gifts, their proper and appropriate use
- 5:35within the church? Why put this this heartwarming
- 5:39description of the love between a husband and a wife here of all
- 5:45places? Unless, of course, First
- 5:50Corinthians 13 isn't actually about marriage after all.
- 5:57Or at least that wasn't the primary context that Paul had in
- 6:01mind as he was writing to the church in Corinth.
- 6:06No offense intended if you had First Corinthians 13 read at
- 6:12your wedding, right? But I think if we took, if we
- 6:15take a close look at this passage in its context, I think
- 6:23we find that's exactly the reality, right?
- 6:27That this isn't a section of Scripture that was just
- 6:31haphazardly stuck into the middle of Paul's letter by some
- 6:35later editor. And it isn't about weddings or
- 6:39marriage or romance, after all, right?
- 6:43The discussion of love in First Corinthians 13 is absolutely
- 6:47central to the conversation we're having about spiritual
- 6:52gifts, about how the members of the body of Christ are supposed
- 6:56to relate to one another, and the character that God wants to
- 7:00form in everyone who follows the way of Jesus.
- 7:07So this morning we're going to take that closer look and see
- 7:11what the Spirit is saying through Paul.
- 7:15Because as we saw last week, Paul sees gifts as being one of
- 7:20the keys right to the healthy operation of the body of Christ.
- 7:26And in chapter 12, the different gifts of the Spirit are compared
- 7:29to the different functions of different parts of the body.
- 7:33Each believer a part of the body of Christ, even though different
- 7:37people receive different gifts. That's what we talked about a
- 7:40bit last week. And then then in the recap at
- 7:43the end of chapter 12, Paul lists some of those gifts of the
- 7:48Spirit that have been given to the church.
- 7:51He talks about prophets then, or apostles and prophets, teachers,
- 7:56miracles, helping, guidance, administration, tongues.
- 8:02Now, two things quickly about this list.
- 8:07One, this is a representative list, right?
- 8:11It's not an exhaustive list of all the gifts that the Spirit
- 8:16ever gives to Scripture. There are other spiritual gifts
- 8:19that aren't listed here. They're talked about in other
- 8:21places, or Paul talks about and Peter talks about and John,
- 8:25whoever. But this isn't an exhaustive
- 8:28list. These aren't all the gifts that
- 8:31the Spirit gives to the church. That's the first thing.
- 8:33Second thing, even though Paul begins giving a a numbered list,
- 8:40right, this isn't an indication of priority.
- 8:43All the gifts matter. All the gifts are given by the
- 8:48Spirit. All the gifts are empowered by
- 8:51that same Spirit. I think what's happening here is
- 8:55that Paul begins listing some gifts and then somewhere in
- 8:59there around teachers or so he he loses count and just be
- 9:03starts listing them off then then, then, then, then, right.
- 9:07It would be a little bit like me saying my family is made-up of
- 9:11first Meg, second Timothy, then Benjamin, then Josiah, then Eli.
- 9:20But just because I stopped counting it, it doesn't mean
- 9:23that Meg or Tim are somehow more of my family than Ben, Josiah
- 9:29and Eli, right? Are are you with me?
- 9:31He's he's listing some things, but it's not an order of
- 9:35priority. Then then Paul tells the
- 9:40Corinthians to eagerly desire the greater gifts.
- 9:46Wait a minute, Paul. You mean there are greater gifts
- 9:50than miracles and healing and prophecy?
- 9:54I I thought all the gifts were different but eagle or different
- 10:00but equal. But why wouldn't I want the
- 10:04greater gifts and and if there's a most excellent way, sign me
- 10:10up. Why would I want the the halfway
- 10:14way or the the good enough way? I want the excellent way.
- 10:19And it's here that Paul makes it clear that all the gifts he's
- 10:23been writing about tongues, prophecy, faith, generosity,
- 10:27martyrdom, on and on and on. None of them matter if they're
- 10:33not used in the service of love, if they're not done in a loving
- 10:39way, if we're not being formed into people of love.
- 10:49You want the most excellent way. It's the way of love.
- 10:54And by love I don't mean some squishy, sentimental, feel good
- 10:59emotion. It's the kind of love that God
- 11:02has for us, kind of love He wants to put in us so we can
- 11:09love others. This kind of love, I'm going to
- 11:14call it holy love to distinguish it from from the other ways we
- 11:19talk about love, right? Like romantic love.
- 11:22And I love a good cheeseburger, obviously without Pickles.
- 11:28But this kind of holy love, this is a kind of holy love that
- 11:33looks like Jesus, Paul wrote in in First Corinthians.
- 11:40He said love is patient, love is kind.
- 11:46It does not envy, it does not boast.
- 11:49It's not proud. It does not dishonor others.
- 11:53It's not self seeking. It's not easily angered.
- 11:57It keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil,
- 12:03but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always
- 12:07trust, always hopes, always perseveres.
- 12:11Love never fails. This is the kind of holy love
- 12:20that is the foundation of all the spiritual gifts.
- 12:26All of them, none excluded. So if we're trying to exercise
- 12:32our spiritual gifts for any other reason, if this kind of
- 12:38holy love isn't being formed in US, if our lives and our
- 12:46interactions with other people aren't increasingly being marked
- 12:51by and and known by this kind of love, something's wrong.
- 12:59Something's wrong. And, and that something needs to
- 13:02be dealt with so that we can be brought into alignment with the
- 13:07way of Jesus, which is the way of love, right.
- 13:13That most excellent way because as Paul says, love along with
- 13:22faith and and hope, that's what's going to last into
- 13:26eternity. Spiritual gifts, all these other
- 13:32gifts, they're, they're for today, but they aren't forever.
- 13:38They're going to pass away when God's Kingdom comes in its
- 13:42fullness. They'll disappear when God
- 13:44brings the new heaven and the new earth, because then we'll no
- 13:48longer need the gift of healing because there won't be any more
- 13:52sickness or disease. We won't need the gift of
- 13:56prophecy because God himself will speak to all of us.
- 14:01We won't need the gift of mercy because we'll walk with the one
- 14:05who is over all and in all and through all.
- 14:07And so there'll be no oppression to undo, no injustice to, right.
- 14:13But love. Love will last forever because
- 14:20God is love. It's not just what God does,
- 14:25it's who he is and love is, who he desires and intends for his
- 14:33people to be. God wants to form his own
- 14:37character in US. I don't think I'm going too far
- 14:44out on a limb to say this, but here's my hot take for the
- 14:49moment. For the morning, God cares more
- 14:56about your character than he does about your gifting.
- 15:04God cares more about your character than he does about
- 15:10your gifting. And that's coming from the guy
- 15:13who has 18 weeks set aside this year to talk about spiritual
- 15:16gifts. That's saying something, right?
- 15:22But I think that's what Paul's saying.
- 15:26Who you're becoming is the most important thing about you.
- 15:34Are you becoming a person of holy love?
- 15:41Is that the character that's being formed in you?
- 15:48Because God is looking for people who are willing to be
- 15:51formed into his character, willing to be formed into people
- 15:57of the kind of love that Paul talks about here in First
- 16:00Corinthians 13, people who can be entrusted with his presence
- 16:06and his power. As important as spiritual gifts
- 16:11are in the life of the church, and I think they're, they're
- 16:15really pretty important, But as important as they are, if we're
- 16:21not operating from this foundation of holy love as the
- 16:25motivation and the purpose and the objective of what we do,
- 16:31even in our exercising of our spiritual gifts, the power of
- 16:36the Spirit isn't going to be there.
- 16:39We're going to be a clanging Dong and a clashing.
- 16:45Cymbal. If I stand up here to preach and
- 16:56the purpose in my heart is direct to correct someone who
- 17:01made me angry this week, if the objective I'm aiming for is for
- 17:08people to come up to me after the service and say, oh great
- 17:11sermon pastor, you really hit it this time.
- 17:17If the motivation in my heart is anything other than loving you
- 17:24all with the holy love of Jesus, then my words are just that
- 17:31clashing symbol. Jesus said that we would be
- 17:37known as his followers by the spiritual gifts we use.
- 17:44No, everyone will know that we are Jesus's disciples if our
- 17:50theology is spot on. No, everyone here, here it is,
- 17:58right? Everyone will know that you are
- 18:01Jesus's disciples if you show up at church on Sunday morning.
- 18:06No, Jesus said. By this, everyone will know that
- 18:12you are my disciples if you love one another, not when you do.
- 18:21If you love one another, it's a choice we can make.
- 18:29It's a choice we have to make to love one another.
- 18:37Paul echoed this idea in his letter to the Ephesians when he
- 18:41instructed them in chapter 5 to follow God's example, therefore
- 18:47as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as
- 18:54Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering
- 18:58and sacrifice to God. Follow God's example because
- 19:07you're His children, all right? Think about all the things kids
- 19:13do because they see mom or dad doing.
- 19:18Follow God's example, which he gave us where?
- 19:26In the person of Jesus, right? In God's own incarnation into
- 19:32humanity. What's this example?
- 19:37It's to walk. To continue in the way of love,
- 19:42just as Christ showed us the ultimate picture of love by
- 19:46giving himself for us. And I'd argue he gave himself
- 19:53for us long before he was nailed to a cross.
- 20:01Or it's like Paul prayed for the Ephesians church a little
- 20:04earlier in that letter in in what I think is one of the key
- 20:08passages in all of Scripture, Paul said, I pray that you being
- 20:15rooted and established in love may have power together with all
- 20:20the Lord's holy people to grasp how wide and long and high and
- 20:25deep is the love of Christ. To know this love that surpasses
- 20:31knowledge that you may be filled with all, filled to the measure
- 20:38of all the fullness of God. Paul's prayer for the church was
- 20:47that their foundation would be love, and only from that
- 20:54foundation would would come all the power they would need not
- 20:58just to operate in their spiritual gifts, not to change
- 21:02the world, not even to lead people to Christ.
- 21:04No power to grasp the width and length and breadth and depth of
- 21:09the holy love of Christ that they would know this love.
- 21:14Not just a mental knowing about this love.
- 21:18I can memorize First Corinthians 13 versus 4 to whatever it is,
- 21:23but if I don't actually experience that love, if I don't
- 21:28know that love and walk in that love, that was Paul's prayer,
- 21:36that they would have a deep, transforming experience of the
- 21:41love of God so that they would be filled to the measure of all
- 21:47the fullness of God, the God who is love.
- 21:55That's a radical idea filled with all the fullness of God,
- 22:06all the fullness of God. I, I, I can't get my mind around
- 22:13that. But that's the offer, friends.
- 22:21God wants to form us into people of love and, and so fill us with
- 22:29his presence and power when it comes to this conversation we're
- 22:37having about spiritual gifts, First Corinthians 13 and, and
- 22:43this holy love that Paul is describing.
- 22:48It's not just an unwelcome pickle on your cheeseburger,
- 22:53right? It's the hamburger Patty, the
- 22:58most important thing, right in the middle, right where it
- 23:04should be. And so the question I think we
- 23:09have to ask ourselves is this, what kind of person am I
- 23:19becoming? What kind of person am I known
- 23:25to be? Do the people closest to you
- 23:32experience you as a person who protects and trusts, or do they
- 23:40experience you as as a person full of anger?
- 23:45Do strangers in the grocery store or dare I say it, driving
- 23:50down to 95 or Route 70, do they experience you as a person who's
- 23:56patient and kind? Or is someone selfish, proud.
- 24:06You might fill in some other adjectives there.
- 24:11Are you, am I? Are we being formed more and
- 24:20more into persons of holy love, this kind of person who who
- 24:28shares God's very character, someone who can be entrusted to
- 24:34carry God's presence and power to advance his purposes in the
- 24:39world? If so, three cheers.
- 24:44But are there some holdout areas in your heart, in your life that
- 24:50Jesus still wants to deal with? And if not, if that doesn't
- 24:57describe the kind of person you're becoming, the kind of
- 25:00person you're known to be, would you ask him this morning to do a
- 25:08transforming work in you? Would you give him permission
- 25:13and freedom to deal with anything that's in the way of
- 25:17you becoming that kind of person so He can shape you into a
- 25:21person of holy love? As we move toward our
- 25:27celebration of communion this morning, would you ask God to
- 25:34pour His love into you in such a way that you experience that
- 25:41love for yourself and it becomes the very foundation of the life
- 25:49you live, the very foundation of the person you are becoming, so
- 25:54that love becomes the defining mark of your life?
- 26:04I don't want to rush past this. So.
- 26:05So I want you to take a moment with me here.
- 26:10We're just going to have a moment of silence, reflection,
- 26:14and confession. We prepare to meet the Lord at
- 26:18His table this morning. Let's pray together.
