Transcript
- 0:01Hey, welcome to the interview at this EdTech
- 0:02podcast. I'm David Berner, and I am joined by
- 0:05Dr. Rochelle Denapeau, author, AI strategist,
- 0:09speaker, attorney, and podcaster as well. And
- 0:13so we're really happy to have you here. Thanks
- 0:15for joining us. Yeah, I'm happy to be here with
- 0:17you as well. So can you tell us a little bit
- 0:20about the sessions that you've done first? Yeah,
- 0:22I've had a busy schedule. Sunday I came in, I
- 0:25did a five -hour pre -conference workshop. It
- 0:27was Balancing Humanity and Innovation in STEAM
- 0:30Learning. So a mixed group, which was awesome.
- 0:33We had educators, paraprofessionals, people that
- 0:36are in administrative roles. And so trying to
- 0:39plan out for it was a little bit interesting
- 0:40because to see what would be beneficial to them.
- 0:43But I had modules. I had like AI. I did augmented
- 0:46virtual reality. I had coding. I had drones.
- 0:49And then the last hour was space. station exploration.
- 0:52So I had some friends bring in the different
- 0:54robots and drones and we had like stations set
- 0:56up and I had 80s music playing in the background
- 0:58and it was like it was just really a great experience
- 1:01and so that was the first one to kick it off
- 1:03and then on Monday I have to think back now.
- 1:07Monday, I was part of an AI and EdTech super
- 1:10share panel with a group and it was like rapid
- 1:12pace. We've done it, I think, for the last three
- 1:14ISTE conferences. I have my own session, a couple
- 1:17booth sessions that I did and I like doing those
- 1:19as well because it's fun to get out there in
- 1:21Expo Hall and do some demos and meet some people
- 1:23and see some friends. And then yesterday I did
- 1:26a discovery stage. with Jamie Donnelly, all about
- 1:28augmented virtual reality and AI, of course.
- 1:31And then in the afternoon, I set up a panel discussion
- 1:34at the learning stage. And I was the moderator,
- 1:36but I was joined by Nancy Blair Black, Dr. Sheldon
- 1:39Aikens, and Michael Hernandez. And so I made
- 1:41up the questions. I put little icons on the screen
- 1:44to signify who was answering it, but I didn't
- 1:47really tell all of them what their symbol was.
- 1:49So that was really well done, too. It was a great
- 1:52conversation. And then today, I have a couple
- 1:54booth presentations. And then my last session...
- 1:56the day is AI and the Law from 1 .30 till 3 in
- 2:00room 110B. It rhymes really well. So a pretty
- 2:05packed schedule, but it's been great to see everybody.
- 2:07And it's just like, I would say like learning
- 2:09is everywhere. And it's such a... I would never
- 2:11miss ISTE. The conference is great. Yeah. And
- 2:14can we talk a little bit too about the... So
- 2:16the session you have coming up, the AI and the
- 2:18Law session, can you give us a little bit more
- 2:19insight on that session? What people expect during
- 2:22that? It's a session that, you know, I've been
- 2:25doing AI sessions, just general AI sessions for
- 2:27like eight years, but in the last three years,
- 2:29I started to realize there's bigger issues that
- 2:32are out there. So in that session, we talk about,
- 2:35like, what are the concerns with AI in education,
- 2:37you know, talking about bias, ethical considerations,
- 2:40how to stay safe online. We look at some different
- 2:43platforms that are, you know, in compliance,
- 2:45and it helps people know what to look for when
- 2:47they're vetting tools. I have some scenarios
- 2:49about, like, what would you do if, that's built
- 2:51in. So it's not just me talking. the whole time.
- 2:53It's meant to be interactive and engaging, kind
- 2:55of thought -provoking. I tell stories a lot about
- 2:58things that people have done. So there's some
- 2:59of like the don'ts, the do's and the don'ts that
- 3:01come into it. But it's a 90 -minute session,
- 3:04and I've done it as a seven -and -a -half -hour
- 3:06workshop. I've also done it as...and that was
- 3:08a virtual one. I've also done it as a six -hour,
- 3:10but it's probably...I love doing all the sessions,
- 3:12but it's probably become my most favorite session
- 3:15to do just because of all of the scenarios and
- 3:17everything that you can do within it. And it
- 3:19gets people talking, really thinking about it
- 3:21at a higher level. Yeah, and that's like an angle
- 3:23that I don't see very often, like where it's
- 3:25like specifically focused on the law and the
- 3:27things that they should be aware of and ethical
- 3:30concerns and all that type of thing. As far as
- 3:33ISTE goes, how many years have you been coming
- 3:35to ISTE? Which now has a new name. I know. It's
- 3:38International Society for Transforming Education.
- 3:43And the first time I went was in 2015. I became
- 3:46a member in 2014 when I was getting my master's
- 3:48degree. And I think that it was in Atlanta that
- 3:51year potentially. And I had heard about it. And
- 3:52I thought about going. But I didn't. But it was
- 3:54in Philly. you know, across the state where I
- 3:56live. So I went there, took the train out, and
- 3:59it was just like, wow, when I walked in, when
- 4:02you got to see and meet people that you had met
- 4:03online and known on Twitter or LinkedIn or wherever,
- 4:06and just so many opportunities for learning everywhere.
- 4:09A little bit stressful at first because you're
- 4:10trying to plan your schedule, but what I've been
- 4:11telling people was like, don't worry about it,
- 4:13you know, plan it out because if you're planning
- 4:14to get to that session, you might run into friends
- 4:16along the way and you're not actually going to
- 4:18get there, but you're going to have conversations
- 4:19and that's still learning. So I've come to every
- 4:22single one except when they have them virtually,
- 4:24so. Yeah, maybe 10 now, I think. Okay. But they
- 4:29come around so quickly because some of the people
- 4:30that work here, the other day I walked by and
- 4:34I waved at somebody and went, I feel like I just
- 4:36did that in San Antonio. I had so many deja vus
- 4:39that day. It's like, where did the time go? Yeah,
- 4:43as far as you mentioned, like people that you
- 4:45meet while you're here, is there anybody that
- 4:47you're like super happy to meet or have met that
- 4:51you only knew online? Well, yeah, in the panel
- 4:57yesterday, Dr. Sheldon Aikens, we had connected.
- 5:00I had one of my podcasts before. Actually, I
- 5:02had him... Probably six years ago, we did a talk.
- 5:06I was doing these video series and I had him
- 5:09as a guest on that and I kind of had forgotten
- 5:11about that. But then I had him on the podcast
- 5:13and had him join as a panel on the panel yesterday.
- 5:16And we had not met in person, just interacted
- 5:18on Facebook and had conversations over the years.
- 5:21And so it was great to actually meet him in person.
- 5:24So that's the first one that comes to mind. Okay.
- 5:28This is a tough question. What do you wish somebody
- 5:30told you before your first ISTE? Oh, the advice
- 5:35that I give now. Don't worry so much about planning
- 5:38the perfect schedule and everything. Look at
- 5:43the program, think about things that you might
- 5:46want to learn, mark some of those down, but also
- 5:48make time for social events and don't be afraid
- 5:51to go and sit down next to a buddy and get in
- 5:53a conversation and you're going to be tired.
- 5:55but don't go back and sleep. Keep going because
- 5:58I always say, I'm gonna sleep in August, it's
- 6:00okay. But just making sure that you get out there
- 6:02and don't stress too much about like, I didn't
- 6:04make this schedule or I didn't get to this session,
- 6:06it's fine. You're still gonna walk away with
- 6:08a lot. Yeah, you won't make everything, right?
- 6:10I know. Although, you know what? I try. When
- 6:12I put it on my schedule, I'm like, I'm going
- 6:13to do it. I'm going to do it. But I get close,
- 6:16but it's OK. Yeah, I'm notorious for starring
- 6:18so many things, but not making so many. I know.
- 6:20I get the calendar conflict. I'm like, I know.
- 6:22I'm going to make a last minute game day decision
- 6:25on that one. Yep, absolutely. So as far as what
- 6:29you have going on right now, can you preview
- 6:31for us a little bit of things that you have coming
- 6:33up? So we're at SD Now, but afterwards, what
- 6:36kind of things are you working on? Well, in July,
- 6:39I have a few conferences I'll be going to. I'll
- 6:41be going to Texas for a Tech Connect conference
- 6:44that's at a school district. And then the week
- 6:47after, I'll be going back to Lexington, Kentucky.
- 6:49for their KEDC AI Summit, which is the second
- 6:52year. Last year, I was honored to be the opening
- 6:55keynote. I had some sessions and I moderated
- 6:57a panel there as well. So I've just, I don't
- 6:59know, I really like moderating panels now. I
- 7:02think that and booth demos, it's kind of fun
- 7:04to, I mean, there's a lot of planning that goes
- 7:06into it, but so I have that. And then in August,
- 7:09I'll be going to Hancock in Missouri, a school
- 7:11district for a two -day event and doing a keynote
- 7:13and some sessions there as well. So we'll see
- 7:16what happens in the fall. There's some conferences
- 7:17and things, but... always looking for more opportunities
- 7:20to do something, or maybe do some writing, or
- 7:23like I said, maybe sleep in August. No, okay.
- 7:25You have to keep going, and you have to. You
- 7:28have to keep it learning, so. Yeah, and you do
- 7:30have some books, many books, as well. Do you
- 7:33have anything new coming out, or are you...?
- 7:36Yes. In the process, I am working on the second
- 7:41edition of my How to Teach AI book. I had started
- 7:44another book and then of course, you know, other
- 7:47things come up along the way. I'm like, oh, that's
- 7:48okay. But I have an idea for what might be a
- 7:52kind of interesting book concept, but I'm not
- 7:55going to say what it is about, but we'll see
- 7:57how that goes. But other than that, constantly
- 7:59like writing blogs, articles and things, newsletters,
- 8:02you name it. So just trying to be consistent
- 8:04with all of that. Okay, great. One last question
- 8:06for you. Okay. Is there anybody that we haven't
- 8:09had on the podcast that you think we should?
- 8:11And I'm not entirely sure if you have or had
- 8:14it hadn't had them on air, but I would say Ken
- 8:17Shelton Okay. Yeah, Ken's been on Ken's been
- 8:20on so okay. We beat you do it That's he's definitely
- 8:24one of my go -to's Hmm. I have to think now because
- 8:28we I was just with him two weeks ago in Alabama
- 8:30and he was the keynote So hmm, that was like
- 8:34my number one get well, I'm gonna one. I have
- 8:36a lot of other ones how about Oh, this is hard,
- 8:41because I didn't think it was on there. Jamie
- 8:46Donnelly? No, I haven't. There you go. OK. And
- 8:49you should ask her really tough questions because
- 8:52of what she puts me through sometimes when we're
- 8:54together. No, but she would be great. She's amazing
- 8:57with augmented virtual reality. So go for Jamie
- 8:59Donnelly. That would be great. Awesome. Well,
- 9:02make sure you follow Rochelle on all the socials,
- 9:05the website. Yeah, I'm very consistent with R
- 9:09the D E N E nine one five because it's my first
