- 1:46going to join us. He is a candidate for House of Delegates, a
- 1:49new candidate stick at his foot in the water. We'd talk to him a
- 1:51little bit later on. Plus, we get our monthly visit from Mayor Amy
- 1:55Schuler Goodwood on the Mayor Monday. That's coming up a little bit later on
- 1:57in the show. Want to welcome into the show first though, our good
- 2:00friend from aug the newspaper, Steven Allen Adams. Good morning, sir,
- 2:04how are you? Good morning? I guess if the mayor is going to
- 2:06be here, then it's not like last week where I got the facto take
- 2:09over the entire Canal Valley as the acting mayor. No, no, she's
- 2:14she's back. So now you know you are no longer the mayor. Well
- 2:17you have been. You have been upended from your your position. We've got
- 2:22a new title for you man, your public enemy number one in the world
- 2:25of media. Of course, I'm referring to the controversy that developed between you
- 2:30and I understand there's been, you know, a little bit of a peace
- 2:34offering now between yourself and the State Center and candidate for Attorney General Mike Stewart
- 2:38on this very show last week. Mister Stewart said, we'll say this and
- 2:42we'll move on to other things. He says he doesn't necessarily have a problem
- 2:46with media members, I guess, like myself or hobby, because we don't
- 2:50portray ourselves, in his words, as journalists, but more of opinion holders.
- 2:53And I've said from day one doing the show, I am not may
- 2:55have been a journalism major, but I'm not a journalist by any true I
- 2:59don't really know what I am, but I'm not a journalist. But took
- 3:02some issues with the way you had covered certain things. You care to address
- 3:06that, no one move, of course. Yeah. I won't talk about
- 3:08the specifics of our conversation because that was off the record, but it was
- 3:12a very good conversation and we talked it out. I mean, I have
- 3:15a weird kind of position where I write daily and cover things daily, but
- 3:20I do have a weekly column that I use for news analysis. I try
- 3:24to take a look at political situations, kind of take a look at it
- 3:28using my background in history and as a reporter and as a former state government
- 3:32media flat once upon a time, and kind of take a look at the
- 3:36sore stuff. There are a couple of things that he had taken personal which
- 3:39were not meant to be personal. And again, we talked this sour stuff
- 3:44out, which is what should have happened all along anyway, versus having it
- 3:49get splattered on social media. But we're good, and I think we're at
- 3:52a good place right now. And that's really how you got to do it
- 3:55with that sort of thing because you were just better off, especially when you
- 3:59have those type of beefs to get that behind you. It's not good for
- 4:02a candidate because it's hard to fight with people, you know, the old
- 4:05adage. You can't fight with people that can buy ink by the barrel or
- 4:10people with you know, fifty thousand WAT transmitters exactly exactly. But you know,
- 4:15you got to build those type of relationships up. So hopefully that puts
- 4:18all that stuff away and things will be calm from here on out. Yeah,
- 4:23and that's that race for Attorney General, I think. And there's I
- 4:27mean faces Stephen. I mean, and I mentioned this to somebody. I
- 4:30think it was on the show last week. I said, look, come
- 4:31January twenty twenty five, when when everybody knew other than Kent Leenheart, the
- 4:39entire board of Public Works is going to be somebody different unless something major changes
- 4:42between now that I mean, it's going to be including the governor. Yeah,
- 4:46I mean, and I'm sure I'm not a Westernginian history, and you're
- 4:48much much more so than I am. On that I'd like to go back
- 4:51to and find out has has it ever happened? That way that you had
- 4:55that many people that were that were new to the border PubL Works not in
- 5:00some time. And I made a point a long time ago to people back
- 5:04in twenty sixteen, back when you first had JB. Mccusky running, Mac
- 5:09Warner running, others running. You know, we had you know, Republicans
- 5:12took the entire Board of Public Works that year except for one and that was
- 5:15John Purdue, the state treasure at the time. And I had made a
- 5:17point then, you know, man, the bench, we don't have much
- 5:19of a bench yet as far as the Republicans for those type of positions,
- 5:26well they got one now. And to the point where you've got multiple seats
- 5:30now that are being contested, and you've got you know, people that have
- 5:34been in politics for a while, You've got some young people that are getting
- 5:38in those races, and you know, it's creating people butting heads. We've
- 5:42already seen some friendships kind of kind of ruined the world and JB. Mccusky
- 5:46thing as an example of that. And yeah, it's just it's a very
- 5:49contentious thing. So not only do we have people that can run for those
- 5:53seats, but we multiple people and contested primaries and that always creates friction.
- 5:58It does, it does. Indeed, an now what we're seeing this is
- 6:00not that different than what the Democrats did for eighty three years. I mean
- 6:03when you think about it. But now, I was at an event this
- 6:08past week that Senator Craig Blair was there, and he was just talking about
- 6:12the state of politics of West Virginia and apparently, you know, there are
- 6:15people and you know who I'm talking about, there are people in the legislature
- 6:17that don't think that the leadership be at Hanshaw or Blair or tar throw him
- 6:24in there aren't right wing enough. Oh yeah, they wanted to take it
- 6:29further, right. Oh, it's great that you bring it up, because
- 6:31I showed, like an AP reporter in the state this old headline from around
- 6:38twenty ten where Craig Blair was pushing drug testing for welfare recipient. So I'm
- 6:42like, this is a guy who is now considered to be a Rhino now
- 6:46and very much a moderate to liberal Republican, and this is a guy that
- 6:50ten years ago was doing that. So now you have to really be the
- 6:54Craig Blair's right to say that he's not right enough. And that's the situation
- 6:59we have right now, we are seen some factionalization. You see it in
- 7:01the legislature of people that would be normal conservative Republicans ten years ago that are
- 7:09now being considered the moderates, and you've got people further to the right of
- 7:12that, and it is creating a lot of friction. And we'll see after
- 7:15twenty twenty four whether it gets better or it gets worse. Growing pains basically,
- 7:18I mean, and you could easily have predicted this was going to happen
- 7:21again. We're talking to Steven Allan Adams from Ogden Newspapers. Since you and
- 7:25I last talked, Steve Williams has made it official or as official as you
- 7:28can in November that he is going to be running for obviously made the announcement
- 7:32that he would be running on the Democratic side in race scene at the Labor
- 7:35Day picnic. But he's come out more so now. And of course not
- 7:38every not anybody's an official candidate, I guess till January, but he's going
- 7:42to run. I had him on the show last week, and you know,
- 7:46I think it was maybe Monday of last week when I was kind of
- 7:49giving a game plan off the top of my head for the things that I
- 7:54thought that Steven Williams would have to do. Steve Williams would do if he
- 7:57was going to have a chance to win the governor ship. Comes on the
- 8:01show whatever day. I had him on Wednesday or Thursday last week, and
- 8:03I said, one of the things he has to do is he has to
- 8:07denounce the National Democratic Party. But I got it. He did it on
- 8:11this show last week. He pretty much said, I think the words were
- 8:13in talking about the AOC's of the world and the others. He said,
- 8:18they're not going to be buying me lunch, and nor would I accept it.
- 8:22So he did exactly that. He basically said I'm not a part of
- 8:26them. Yeah. We had him on the Mountain State Views podcast and he
- 8:31said kind of the same thing. He said he was a fiscal conservative,
- 8:35he is limited government, he is free market, and he loves Ronald Reagan.
- 8:41Yeah, then getting a lot of the people in the far right right
- 8:43now don't love Reagan anymore. Reagan is considered a rhino to something. But
- 8:46point being, he made sure to kind of burnish the fact that he doesn't
- 8:50care about des and ours and really in his city, he's not been a
- 8:54partisan that I've really seen so, I mean, I think he's proved it
- 8:58as it should be. By the way, his hoppy point out is commentary
- 9:00today. In his background is business and finance, and he's just not a
- 9:05partisan in the typical way. He is really kind of more of what West
- 9:09Virginia's kind of expect from a Democrat. And yeah, he's really kind of
- 9:13backed away from the hard left stuff that has kind of latched onto the state
- 9:18party. Yeah. Dave Valancho on five eighty Live is brought to you bar
- 9:22by General Hardware and Lumber of wind Field. From kitchens to paints to decks,
- 9:26straight framing, would roofie metal, and anything else you may need,
- 9:28you'll find it at General Hardware and Lumber of Winfield. I want to talk
- 9:31about this opioid settlement money and some criticism that not everyone Stephen has been fully
- 9:37upright on some of the meetings that were scheduled. There were some people that
- 9:41I think were a little bit concerned about there talking about this West Virginia First
- 9:43foundation You're taking them. Yeah. I followed someone that on social media.
- 9:46You have Katie Coin with West Virginia Watch that had been spent pretty much Friday
- 9:52and Saturday trying to chase this down. Now there's going to be a meeting
- 9:54scheduled actually in the next little bit, Yeah, nine thirty. It's going
- 9:58to be over at the Truest Building. It is now a public meeting,
- 10:01but there was some question as to whether it was going to be a public
- 10:03meeting or whether their meetings were going to be public at all. There is
- 10:07something in their memorandum of understanding that basically says our meeting should be public,
- 10:13whatever that means, because that should, you know, could also mean well,
- 10:16maybe it should not. You had people that were on the committee talking
- 10:22about this meeting and hoping it would be public, but nobody knew. And
- 10:26we still haven't ever gotten a media advisory saying one way or the other.
- 10:30The only thing we've seen is a social media post that was pushed by the
- 10:33Attorney General's spokesperson. So now we know it is open to the public.
- 10:39And actually, while we're sitting here, we just got a media advisory from
- 10:41the Attorney General's office for a media availability with Western Unity First Foundation board members
- 10:46this afternoon at four o'clock at the Attorney General's office. So it's a little
- 10:50I guess better late than never, but it would have been certainly nice to
- 10:54have some proactive efforts to reach out, particularly to meeting, because there's a
- 11:01lot of eyeballs on this right now and we're a billion dollars. Yeah,
- 11:05with our state right now being one of the biggest victims of the opioids and
- 11:11substance use disorder and that sort of thing, one billion dollars can go a
- 11:15long way to turn them some things around. So we need some transparency on
- 11:18it, and they should have been proactive. And the excuse Return General gave
- 11:24me on social media on direct message was well, so they're just now organizing,
- 11:30which is true. They don't have an executive director yet. This is
- 11:31literally their first meeting and that's part of what's going to happen today, right,
- 11:35That's exactly that they're going to accept their organizational rules and how they're going
- 11:39to operate that sort of thing. But in lieu of that, then I
- 11:41think it's Theryan General's officers job to put out media advisory at the end of
- 11:46last week saying there's going to be a meeting come cover it. Does that
- 11:50mean that some of this could be taken into executive session today, that there
- 11:54could be certain parts of them. Yeah, I'd say about half the meeting
- 11:56will be I think they're going to the first half up until lunch time will
- 12:00be public, and then after that they'll do some things in executive session.
- 12:03Yeah, and as you said, the eyes of the nation literally are watching
- 12:07West Virginia right now because of the huge settlements that coming here. We're talking
- 12:09about well over a billion dollars and that they've got to figure out how to
- 12:13distribute this and who gets it and so on and so forth. That's why
- 12:16there's been so many again, not just West Virginia's eyes, there's media across
- 12:22the country that are looking at this. Yeah, it's it's a hiccup.
- 12:24And I will say I don't think it's intentional, but it also kind of
- 12:28it's not like they have a lot of experience with this either, you know
- 12:31what I mean. That's right, but it does kind of put every you
- 12:33know them on a bad footing with the media right now. Yeah, which
- 12:37is something that no one, I don't think whats right now? What else
- 12:41are you looking at? What's on your agenda today, Steve Sure, I'm
- 12:43going to be kind of looking into There is an alternative plan being put out
- 12:46there by a group of anonymous business faculty from WU on how to get to
- 12:54the same forty five million dollars savings that W is looking at through their academic
- 12:58trans information and these job losses and things that they're doing right now that would
- 13:05do it without having to shut down any of the academic programs or get rid
- 13:09of any professors. And it's a very interesting document. I'm trying to track
- 13:15down who came up with it, and I'm trying to track down and see
- 13:18if W might possibly be taking it seriously because it involves getting rid of a
- 13:22couple of leadership positions, and at least one of them is already going out
- 13:26the door to be robbousop. So it's a very interesting document. I'm trying
- 13:30to get to the bottom of it. And a reminder where people can read
- 13:33your stuff. Sure, Parkers Producing Sentinel, We're Wheeling Intelligencer and News.

- 17:40three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight and have a text line
- 17:42from through three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight. Want to
- 17:45welcome into the show Terry Burns, who is a Republican candidate for a House
- 17:49of Delegates District fifty three. Is that right? Yeah? Fifty three?
- 17:53All right, Terry, welcome to the show. Thank you for being here.
- 17:56Nice to be here. Thank you. First of all, tell us,
- 17:59Terry, what makes up District fifty three? What areas were talking about?
- 18:02We're talking Camel's Creek, Witcher's Creek, Kelly's Creek, a little bit
- 18:07of Charleston, not a whole lot, but those areas. So tell us
- 18:11about Terry Burns. Who is Terry Burns? Give us a bio. I
- 18:14have lived and grew up in Camels Creek my entire life, so basically it's
- 18:18about sixty three years. I was born and raised there. I'm still there.
- 18:26What is your profession? What have you done? Are you retired or
- 18:29what are you doing? I am retired from the Division of Highways after almost
- 18:33twenty years. What kind of worked did you with the divisional Highways? The
- 18:37last job I had? I actually trained our highway and in our inspectors for
- 18:41construction. Gonna say, because when you're part of the Division Highways, you
- 18:44do a little bit of everything, don't you. Yeah, that's it's a
- 18:47big, big, organization and there's a lot of different jobs in that organization.
- 18:52So with that, then at this point in your life, as you
- 18:56said, you're retired and family, you got all I mean wife and daughter,
- 19:00wife and daughter. Okay, why do you want to be a member
- 19:02of the legislature. I just think West Virginia can do better than we're doing.
- 19:06There's a lot of areas that needs fixed, and I don't think they're
- 19:08getting the attention that they need to be getting right now. Recently, the
- 19:14water company is asking for a big rate increase, which is nothing new for
- 19:18the water company. But I don't think the PSC really represents the people anymore,
- 19:22and I think that needs to be reorganized. I think the Welfare and
- 19:27Social Services d h HR, I think that needs to be reorganized. Division
- 19:33of Highways, I believe, is more corrupt now than it's ever been.
- 19:36Really oh yeah, it's really bad now. I mean you got the commissioner
- 19:41gives his son jobs and they don't think there's anything wrong with that. I
- 19:45think that ought to be investigated. I think it ought to be looked at
- 19:48and find out exactly what happened these things that you're talking about. Do you
- 19:52think that you would have help from some of the other legislators. I mean,
- 19:57if you talk to them already have some of will be on board or
- 20:00what I've talked to Mike Stewart a little bit about it. I think he
- 20:03would be on board with it. I think everybody needs to get involved with
- 20:07it. I don't as far as the PSC goes, I don't think the
- 20:11radar increases are going to stop until the legislature steps in and stops it.
- 20:15Water Company's got something like fifteen rate increases in the last ten years or so.
- 20:19That's got to stop. West Virginia's got poor people that can't afford that.
- 20:25Now they're to play Devil's advocate here, Terry, they would say,
- 20:27And I've heard their spokespeople say that it's because of infrastructure, because they have
- 20:32to They've got to be able to upgrade, to act to in order to
- 20:36better serve their customers. Your thoughts on that, well, my thought would
- 20:40be, if I have a restaurant and my ice cream machine breaks, I
- 20:44can't raise my rates to fix my ice cream machine. That comes out of
- 20:48my pocket. So at what point does the repairs come out of the Water
- 20:52Company's pocket. Who's making millions millions of dollars every year off of us.
- 20:57We give them our water. It's after a resource we give them. They
- 21:02are to treat that and then they sell it back to us. But half
- 21:06the water, not half, but a lot of the water that they treat
- 21:10doesn't make it to our outlets. So why are we not charging them for
- 21:15the water that doesn't materialize? I mean, if they had to pay for
- 21:19the water that you can't account for, I'll bet you they would be Johnny
- 21:22on the spot to go out and fix the water leaks. Talking with Terry
- 21:26Burns, who again is a Republican candidate for House of Delegates in District fifty
- 21:30three. So getting back, I hate to keep harping on this whole water
- 21:34issue. But now there was a public hearing I think that was held last
- 21:37week. How well was that attended? I think there was. They had
- 21:42like fifty three comments. Okay, there was quite a few people there.
- 21:48Because the reason I say that, Terry's because sometimes you know, when they
- 21:51have these public hearings, whether it's water companies or any other public entity,
- 21:53what normally what sometimes happens is is people are all up in arms over it,
- 21:57but life happens, and they get kids and they get jobs and they
- 22:00got so on and so forth. They don't always get an opportunity to attend.
- 22:03But I mean that's a pretty healthy number in my opinion. Yes,
- 22:07there was about fifteen people that actually spoke out against the water rate increase,
- 22:11which I think is way above normal than what actually usually attends. But again,
- 22:18I don't think that the PSC really takes anybody serious. I mean,
- 22:25everybody sits there like not on log and they don't answer questions that they basically
- 22:30sit there and listen to everybody complain. And I think their minds are already
- 22:33made up before the hearing ever takes place. I mean Charlotte Lane came out
- 22:37and started making excuses as to why the water company ought to get the rate
- 22:41increase before they even have the evidentiary hearing. I think their minds are already
- 22:47made up. And I think it's going to take the legislature to stop it.
- 22:49And again, there's a way, maybe we make them make a pay
- 22:56to actually apply for a rate increase. Maybe it's ten percent of what they're
- 23:00asking for, because everybody knows if they ask for three hundred million, they're
- 23:04looking for one hundred million. They're always asked for more than they get,
- 23:07right, yeaw Terry, What experiences have you picked up You mentioned that you
- 23:11were retired from the Department of Highways, But what experiences have you picked up
- 23:15there or anywhere else in your adult life that you think would make you an
- 23:19effective legislator? You know, I don't. I think if you if you
- 23:23just connect with the people. You're there to represent the people. So the
- 23:29majority is supposed to rule. So if you talk to your constituents and they
- 23:33say this is what we would like to see, I think you need to
- 23:37go and look and see. Is it possible to do that? Now?
- 23:41Obviously you can't do it by yourself because you're one of a hundred, you
- 23:45know, But I think if you get other legislators involved, I think you
- 23:48can get the ball rolling. And I think as you get older, I
- 23:52think you learn things life experiences, yes, life experiences, and you have
- 23:57to figure out how to work with people get things done right. And I
- 24:02think I can do that. So you've spent a little time talking about,
- 24:06uh, the Public Service, Commission of Water and things of that nature.
- 24:10What are some other priorities if you're elected to the House that you'd like to
- 24:12work on. I think that the d HHR and our child services really need
- 24:18to be looked at. I know of two families now who had kids taken
- 24:25away, and the d HHR never never even attempted to find out if there
- 24:30was a family member that would take those children. They automatically put them into
- 24:33foster care. One of them was lucky enough to have enough funds that he
- 24:37went and got a lawyer, and it took him two years, but he
- 24:41finally got his grandchild. That shouldn't happen. And my question would be,
- 24:45how many more of those seven thousand kids in foster care could be living with
- 24:51a grandparent right now, But but they can't because DHR decides we're not gonna
- 24:56We're not gonna look, We're just gonna do what we want to do,
- 24:57and we don't care about the kid, we don't care about the grandparents.
- 25:00I think there are family members out there that can take some of these children
- 25:03we have in foster care. What about the prison system that's been I mean,
- 25:07we've seen this story and horrific stories over the last week or two that
- 25:11have come out of the Southern Regional Jail in Beckley, and there's been some
- 25:17heads rolling there. As far as you know, people facing criminal charge and
- 25:19things of that nature. Talking generally speaking about the prison system, the correction
- 25:23system in West Virginia, therey, I think it needs to be looked at
- 25:26as well. I mean, the governor says he didn't know anything about it.
- 25:32I don't know how you couldn't know anything about it when you've had complaints.
- 25:34There had to be complaints went to the governor's office about the prison system.
- 25:38I know the legislature instituted some raises for correction officers. I think that
- 25:42will help. And a lot of this maybe happened because we didn't have any
- 25:48correction officers in place. So maybe if you have enough people working in the
- 25:52jails, maybe you could help some of this stuff and keep it from happening
- 25:56again. But you have to have somebody at the top that knows what they're
- 26:00doing too, and I don't know, we didn't have that. We may
- 26:03have it now, but we didn't have it then. And I think that
- 26:07has a lot to do with a lot of this, and that goes all
- 26:10through state government from the from the top all the way down. I mean,
- 26:12there's leadership that just doesn't know what to do. I mean exactly when
- 26:18I worked for Division Highways. During my career, there was at least four
- 26:22occasions when I was told it's not your job to save the taxpayers money.
- 26:27If it's not an employee's job to save money, then whose job is it?
- 26:32It should be every employee's job to save the state money. I mean
- 26:36the state is the taxpayers. One would think, yes, we work for
- 26:40them, I mean we should be saving them money if we can't. But
- 26:44that's not the way the leadership thinks anymore. It's a bit early now again,
- 26:49you can't even officially file until January, but you've announce said, what
- 26:52do you anticipate your campaign? Looking like, I'm sure you're probably already out
- 26:56there working now, but what do you anticipate the campaign? Are you going
- 26:59to be a door locker going door to door, attending political forums a little
- 27:03bit of each? What do you plan to do? I would like to
- 27:06knock on doors. But the problem with knocking on doors now is this this
- 27:10area you're talking about, Camill's Creek, Kelley's Creek, Waitress Creek. You
- 27:12know there's there's houses that are spread apart. You people have dogs, that
- 27:18sort of thing. You have to be careful. A lot of people don't
- 27:21want strangers knocking on their doors, right, yeah, yeah, I mean
- 27:23you just have to be careful. So, I mean it may be internet
- 27:27ads and can't go wrong with radio ads, you know, No, no,
- 27:30it can't do as be a good thing. We got a whole team
- 27:34up there. I'm sure pounced up on you when you came in the building
- 27:37this morning about that and eventually, now you do you have a website?
- 27:41Do you have social media? Do you have all that? Is it coming
- 27:42or what do you got? Yeah, I've got a website, Terry Burns
- 27:45dot org. Okay, it's up now. Okay, I'll try to keep
- 27:48it updated as we go along. But again, like you said, you
- 27:51can't file till till January. Yeah, and we'll see how things go.
- 27:56But do you anticipate it being a crowded field? There could be other people
- 27:57running for the office or you know, I don't know if there will be
- 28:00anybody else running really, I mean last time there was two people, okay,
- 28:04you know, and Chris Print was one of them. He's running for
- 28:07Secretary of State now, yeah, so he's left the door open. Uh.
- 28:11Last time I ran for the Senate against the CUBO and you know,
- 28:15the first time, I ever rank didn't spend a lot of money, but
- 28:18I got three percent of the vote. So I thought, you know what,
- 28:22let's just try the House of Delegates here and see what we can do.
- 28:25And it's a smaller district'd be easier to get to, so we'll see
- 28:29how good What did you learn in that race? He said that you ran
- 28:32for Senate and it was a failed campaign. But what did you learn from
- 28:33there? Your takeaways that you can utilize this time. There's there's people out
- 28:38there that like to spend a lot of money to get elected for a job
- 28:41that doesn't pay what they spend. Uh that that doesn't make any sense to
- 28:45me. But I mean, you know, if you're want to if you
- 28:49got a job it's gonna pay twenty thousand dollars a year, why do you
- 28:52spend a million dollars to get it? You know, I know it's a
- 28:56power thing for some people, but for me, it's not. For me,
- 28:59it's it's just trying to help the people. And I think we if
- 29:03everybody would think that way, and if candidates would get in the race and
- 29:07their only thing would be to help the people, I think we would be
- 29:10way better off than what we are right now, here's your final thirty Terry.
- 29:14Why should somebody vote for Terry Burns for House of Delegates because I would
- 29:18like to represent them. I think we can make West Virginia a better place,
- 29:22and I think we can make the fifty third district a better place.
- 29:25You know, we had some floods. There was people trapped in their houses,
- 29:29didn't get any help for four or five days from power company, water
- 29:32company, those types of things. I think we can change some of that,
- 29:36but it's I need help, and it's going to take more than one
- 29:40and it's going to take the voters to get involved to make the changes.
- 29:41All right. If people are listening today and they like what you're saying,
- 29:45how can they get ahold of you? Just go to your website website Terry
- 29:49Burns dot org. They could give me a phone call. I think my
- 29:52phone number is on the website as well. Okay, all right, just

- 33:19For a Republican to survive an election in West Virginia, they have to
- 33:22pledge allegiance to a rapist and show they love the rapists more. How pathetic
- 33:27Texas sounds like Terry's already made up his mind. If he's seriously considered the
- 33:30water company issue, why doesn't he have an actual plan? Texas? Terry's
- 33:35approach to governing is novel. If you get more people on your side.
- 33:37You can legislate, genius. Why hasn't anyone else thought of that? According
- 33:42to a Texter, uh, let me see. Texas is not sure if
- 33:47PSC rules for public hearing, but with lawmakers they cannot respond. According to
- 33:53a texture, Texture says, did your guests just say the Department of Highways
- 33:59is more corrupt than ever? Hmmm? Tex says this guy makes sense.
- 34:02He sounds like a Democrat. I don't know if Terry's still listened to the
- 34:07car right now, but if he is, he probably just drove off the
- 34:08road when he said that, because he's definitely a Republican. Nights Eve that

- 34:25You were commenting on my producer Hollywood, Jeff Petty and how he's representing like

- 34:37you and then go go heard Marshall University. Would you like to play for
- 34:43Marshall because we can use you. We've we've dropped five in a row.
- 34:45So if you'd like to revive that middle school football career, Hollywood Wicket,
- 34:51you look like a football player. I actually, well, Dave actually nailed
- 34:54it. I was a middle school football player at one point, got to
- 34:58high school and discovered what partying was in my grade so well and being in
- 35:02middle school. He was twenty seven in middle school, so they asked him
- 35:06to lead. That's pretty much what the problem there was. I love it
- 35:08all right. Well, you know, I got to say this real quick.
- 35:10I was one of the judges mayor for the mac and Cheese event a
- 35:14Capitol Market on Saturday benefiting the Childhood Language Center, thirty two different macaroni and
- 35:19cheeses. And then I went to Nitro and did the Chili Fest for Joe
- 35:23Stevens and the folks there and for Mayor case Bolts. It was hospice and
- 35:28also some animal charities there. So I did thirty two mac and cheeses and
- 35:30twelve chilis month on Saturday. Wouldn't you like to be my wife right now
- 35:35Saturday night, wasn't that Hurbys really like what? Well, I will say
- 35:38this. The Childhood Language Center, I know a little bit about them,
- 35:43and you know, an agency that takes care of children with autism, Aspergers,
- 35:46speech in language disorders, children with cochilar implants who are learning to speak,
- 35:52and the challenges they're around. They're exceptional. I mean, they don't
- 35:57charge their their patients, their clients, which are the littles I call them,
- 36:01they have done monumental work. And the folks at Hospice, I mean,
- 36:06jeff Zsichorowski is one of the best humans on the face of the earth,
- 36:09and for good reason he's there. Folks at Hospice just do an amazing
- 36:14job. Both of my families have been touched by both of those organizations.
- 36:17And good for you, Good for you. You had a busy weekend.
- 36:21I did. I had a busy weekend. Yeah, I bet you didn't
- 36:22have to cook at home. No, I was good. I went home
- 36:25outside you know, dans like, what do you want for dinner? I'm
- 36:28like, I'm good. Yeah, I'm good. For a while. So
- 36:30there was a press conference. Mayor Hill too recently talked about the economic successes
- 36:32of Charleston from the concerts and festivals and the Coloseum of convention Center. Let's
- 36:37talk about the you know, it was it was a great opportunity for us
- 36:40to highlight some of the things that we're doing at the coliseum and convention Center
- 36:45and not only talk about that, but I did an op ed over the
- 36:49weekend in the Gazette now about sports tourism and talking about the Capital Sports Complex,
- 36:54which is actually I think you and I talked a little bit about it
- 36:57the last time we were here. You know, we changed. You know,
- 37:00I said when I got into office, to build a facility, and
- 37:02the Jones administration did that. They built this beautiful facility at the Coliseum and
- 37:07Convention Center. And I walked in and I felt my job was, Okay,
- 37:10now I have to fill it. Now I have to go and say,
- 37:15okay, we spent one hundred and you know plus million dollars on this
- 37:17beautiful facility. How are we going to get the money back that we need?
- 37:22And so we hired a professional organization ovg UH to come in because you
- 37:27know, it's it's not friend business, it's show business. Let's let's get
- 37:30acts in here. Tool. If you if you went or heard or saw
- 37:35Tool this past weekend, my phone was blowing up. Apparently I was the
- 37:38only person that didn't go to based on my social media. I mean,
- 37:43man, everybody looks like and the leads and I'll admit I don't know the
- 37:46first thing about the group Tool, but I will say that their their lead
- 37:50singer was supporting a Jerry West Jersey forty four man. That's like totally in
- 37:54touch. So you know, the and the thing about it is, you
- 37:58know when we look at pre pays endemic numbers, we're crushing it now at
- 38:02the Coliseum and convention Center. Not only were crushing at the Colosseum and Convention
- 38:07Center, which has been fully updated. Of course, we need new seats
- 38:09in our coliseum. That wasn't something that was done and we're working on trying
- 38:13to figure out a way of how do we pay for that and get new
- 38:15seats there because we host you know, boys basketball brings in millions as you
- 38:20well know, Dave. But you know, the Municipal Auditorium is a facility
- 38:24that we now know, you know, prior to OVG coming in and us
- 38:29hiring a professional organization to come in, we were booking three, four,
- 38:32five, six events a year. Now we're twenty six, twenty seven,
- 38:37twenty eight. There is a niche for this. Somebody asked me over the
- 38:40week and do we need the municipal Auditorium. The short well, the quick
- 38:45answer is you better believe we do. But just as we have learned how
- 38:50to fill the colisseum and convention center, we're learning what works at the municipal
- 38:55Auditorium. You can't. And then the books, the acts that you Dave
- 39:00Chappelle, Joe Coy, Nate Bargetzi, are you kidding me? I mean,
- 39:05these are some of the best comedy acts you know on the circuit right
- 39:08now, on topshow. Then you get somebody like Lana del Rey. So
- 39:14it is, it is certainly there is a method to the madness of booking.
- 39:19It is about connections. It's not just you know, it is banking
- 39:22on those bread and butter things that you get. You get the home show,
- 39:25and you get the car show, and you get the you know,
- 39:28it's nice to have the but we the money comes from when people come in
- 39:32to spend not only one night, but two nights. For us, the
- 39:37more of the evening of the Lanna del Rey concert. My husband was up
- 39:40at Walgreens and he was standing behind a mom and daughter who were maybe arguing.
- 39:45She was teenager, he said, teenagers argue with their parents. Just
- 39:51just smidge and I know this for a fact. And she said, no,
- 39:53we'll go downtown and we're just going to get some snacks here, take
- 39:57back to the hotel room. And of course my husband always likes ask,
- 40:00hey, are you from out of town? You're in visiting. Oh,
- 40:02yeah, we're here. We're here from Kentucky. We're here for the Londa
- 40:06del Ray concert. That's what we want. That's exactly what we want,
- 40:09that out of state revenue that's coming in. And I trust and I will
- 40:15grant you that when they came in, they didn't just go for snacks for
- 40:17the hotel. They probably I'm sure they did dinner. They're gonna do breakfast
- 40:21the next morning. They're gonna get coffee. Absolutely, they're filling up their
- 40:24gas, you know, their car with gas on the way, you know,
- 40:28in or out of town. The return on investment that we have seen
- 40:32from revamping the way, it's not just about listen, building things is easy.
- 40:37It is. It's easy. You can build, I can, we
- 40:39can build a beautiful building tomorrow a park. Let's use City Center at Slack
- 40:43Plaza three plus million dollars for that park. I don't want to say it
- 40:47was easy, but you you you hire good people and they build it,
- 40:51filling it, making sure there's programming going on in it. And so that's
- 40:55the challenging part because not only do you want to fill it brings life back
- 41:00in the community. We've already received twelve million dollars back at City Center at
- 41:04Slack Plaza because you build that park, build it, they'll come. Not
- 41:07really build it, program it. Put the right people in to book things
- 41:14to get the money back because oh, by the way, Dave, it's
- 41:15your money. It's your money that built the coliseum and convention center, and
- 41:20so how do we get that return on investment. The most significant thing is
- 41:24we've proven that we can do it. We've proven that it works. You
- 41:29know, you have to invest and spend some money to make some money,
- 41:31but it's about investing in the right types of things. And that's why you
- 41:37know, unanimous decision that city council when I went to them and said,
- 41:40hey, let's build this sports Let's build a sports complex. You know over
- 41:45in where the Macy's property is at the mall for those your listeners, Dave
- 41:49who may not know where it is. Let's build it because the ROI is
- 41:53significant. We're ting on investment. I mean it is. You know,
- 41:58the sports tourism industry we have. I've lost so many opportunities by not having
- 42:02a facility like this. The sports tourism industry was a nineteen nineteen billion with
- 42:07a B industry in twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen. Now it's over forty billion.
- 42:14We want a piece of that pie. And our location is what is
- 42:16significant. So yeah, we've taken a couple of victory laps over the past
- 42:22couple of weeks, and for good reason. And it's not just Amy's patting
- 42:24herself on the back. It's not me man who's booking these shows. It's
- 42:28the people that we've hired and the people who were there working at Because I
- 42:31say this all day long, I got seven hundred and fifty employees. I'm
- 42:35just one City of Charleston worker. I'm just one. We've got an amazing
- 42:39team that's churning and making these things happen. I want to ask you this
- 42:45Mayor, because I've had several questions and comments about this to the show and
- 42:47text, and I always said, I'll ask her when she's on. And
- 42:51I know there was even some comments on your social media over the weekend and
- 42:54has to do with the landfill and recycling. What's going on with that?
- 43:00Are we on a lease for that? I've heard, because I've heard there's
- 43:01there's information out there and I don't know what's true, what's not. Where
- 43:05are the land Yeah, So the Environment and Recycling Committee had a great session
- 43:09last week. I was unable to attend that meeting, but Chairman Burton,
- 43:15Brent Burton, who does an amazing job on city Council, called that meeting
- 43:19to order and they're talking about the expansion of the land because we're required to
- 43:24write that we're running out of room, and so not only expansion of landfill,
- 43:29but opportunities for recycling right here in the city of Charleston, rather than
- 43:34trucking our recycling, which by the way, it's not just Charleston, it's
- 43:37all of the communities around us. It is a requirement. It allgust to
- 43:42Beckley is that right, it does currently now and we won't have to.
- 43:45So that was something that really that people were really excited to hear that will
- 43:52be you know, there's a cost savings to the City of Charleston and an
- 43:55opportunity to not only have that cost savings but also to have an expansion of
- 44:00recyclables and glass. Now they're trying to you know, they're still working out
- 44:07on paper, but there is a better return on the value of recycling glass.
- 44:13And so that's something that really peaked everybody's interest. And I got a
- 44:17lot of comment not only DoD, I got a lot of Facebook comments.
- 44:20I got a lot of texts like ooh, let me know and how can
- 44:22I be involved? Because people are really passionate. We have an amazing green
- 44:27Team committee and a great environment and recycling committee as well. Somebody I got
- 44:31a text here through the show about the landfill, who actually owns a landfield
- 44:36and is there release? I mean, how does that work? Yeah,
- 44:37it is. We're working with waste management right now and we take all of
- 44:45our refuse up to that site right now. But it is City of Charleston
- 44:51and we're working to make sure the property is ours. The City of Charleston
- 44:54will have that expansion. That's our property, but we're working right now to
- 44:59make sure it's all within city limits, and so we're working through some of
- 45:04those things right now. Nine p. Fifty two. We're back after this

- 47:14here, Texas. Does the city have any policy that allows or prohibits and
- 47:17employee from promoting their personal business on city property? I need a little bit
- 47:24more information promoting their personal business on city property. Yeah, you can't.
- 47:30You can't like a like a maybe a poster or a signer. I don't
- 47:34know. That's what the text says is, Yeah, nobody can. Nobody
- 47:37can do that. I mean you can't post like you know, I call
- 47:39them yard signs. If the texture is talking about that, yeah, I
- 47:44mean please call my office and let me know. But yeah, that's not
- 47:49something that I would I would say we would not take exception to Texas.
- 47:54Dave can ask the mayor if a few of the one hundred and fifty is
- 47:57fireworks shows and Charleston next summer could be replaced by drone light shows. Drone
- 48:01light shows, that's the thing, listen. I will say this. I've
- 48:06learned a lot in the past. Oh it's going on. It's going to
- 48:08be five years here soon, my first first year, my second term is
- 48:15almost up here before too long. And I have learned this to be absolutely
- 48:19true. The only people who love fireworks are the people who are at the
- 48:22fireworks show period and a paragraph. Everybody else does not, and that includes
- 48:25my dog as well. So I appreciate more than you know, to your
- 48:30Texters and to your listeners. We've actually worked with folks to make sure that
- 48:34we have limited fireworks and firework shows. But I appreciate that there are some
- 48:40new technologies they do drones and light shows, and those are kind of Those
- 48:46are kind of cool too. I think that probably in the next couple of
- 48:50years, you'll see more and more people doing that, and maybe us as
- 48:52well Texas well. The Convince Center host cheerleading competitions for West Virginia High school.
- 48:57My gosh, I would love it. I would absolutely love to have
- 49:00them back. We used to. As your texture may know this already.
- 49:07It is one of the things that I would love. You know, we,
- 49:10by the way, we're all good neighbors right cities. You know when
- 49:13we say, and I mean this, a thriving Huntington is a thriving Charleston
- 49:16and thriving Dunbar. Thriving Charleston is helpful to Dunbar. But we compete on
- 49:21these things too. You know. We love to have track here, we
- 49:25love to have basketball here. In the return on investment we get from those
- 49:30are substantial. I would love to have cheerleading that It's one of the things
- 49:34that we've talked about for years. It went to Huntington actually right before I
- 49:39took over, and I'm sorry we missed that opportunity. But I would love
- 49:45it because, just like we know with sports tourism, because cheerleading, by
- 49:49the way, is a sport times ten that cheerleaders and their coaches, female
- 49:55athletes travel with more people dave athletes. And so when I have a female
- 50:01athlete in the city of Charleston, I know that not just amy is my
- 50:06opinion, it's a fact done testified by the research that we had done and
- 50:12has been done all across the country. For every one female athlete, I
- 50:15get three additional people that travel with her. Is it mom? Is it
- 50:19sister? Is it grandmother? Is it an aunt who's coming with her?
- 50:22So I get more people in, which is a greater return on investment.
- 50:27So when you're talking about traditionally female dominated sports all day long, we'll take
- 50:32them. Give me about twenty seconds on this because I want to talk about
- 50:35the city council now. But you just wrapped up a series of meetings called
- 50:37Here to Serve. There's a summary posted of what you learned on the city
- 50:40social media. Give me about thirty seconds in your takeaway from that, and
- 50:44we'll talk about city council. I started it in twenty nineteen when I first
- 50:45became mayor, because I realized that not everybody can make it to city council
- 50:50meetings. Heck, people are busy, people have a hard time with transportation.
- 50:52So we had these here to Serve meetings all across the city of Charleston.
- 50:57We had lots of people show up in person. It was opportunity to
- 51:00sit down with every single person. My requirement for those meetings are the city
- 51:05managers there, the city attorneys there, the Director of Planning. If you
- 51:08have a question in the City of Charleston, there's somebody there to answer it,
- 51:12because nothing is more frustrating than calling an office and not getting somebody.
- 51:16So we do those great, great opportunity to talk to folks. And I
- 51:21got to say it was a smattering of stuff. Small business owners or somebody
- 51:23confused about a b and O that they had to pay, or somebody said,
- 51:28hey, I want this house torn down. How's that process work?
- 51:30Or hey, I have great idea, how can I implement it in our
- 51:35ten year plan that we're currently doing right now? Talk about City Council tonight.
- 51:37So City Council tonight, there's a couple of really great things that are
- 51:40happening, not only City Appreciation Parking, which happens Saturdays from November twenty fifth
- 51:46through December thirtieth, but we're going to have on the agenda tonight something that
- 51:52we've been working on for quite some time now. A new company moving in
- 51:57the City of Charleston. Plus one hundred and twenty five high high paying jobs,
- 52:02professional jobs moving downtown City of Charleston. It's going to be discussed tonight
- 52:07and we're absolutely thrilled listen to have a vibrant and thriving community. Yes,
- 52:12you need to have the things there that these companies want and we're getting them
- 52:16all right. Mayor good ones. Always pleasure to have you on the show.
- 52:20Thank you, appreciate you being there. Coming up on the show to
- 52:22Mark Chris Wthrow for the Benny Keatam Shrine and Dave Hardy State Revenue Secretary who
- 52:25now is a candidate for Knan county'sir A judge, will be on the show
- 52:29tomorrow as well. Hoppy has got Chelsea Ruby, who currently owns the job
- 52:34that the mayor used to have is secretary. She'll be on the show among
- 52:37others. I will see you tomorrow. Till then, have fun and love
