- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, good afternoon, listeners. Thank you for listening to Lament
- 0:03Speaker 1: of Hope podcast. And I'm very grateful. This is going
- 0:08Speaker 1: to be a little unconventional, because if you're watching this,
- 0:10Speaker 1: you're going to see it's just the logo for the podcast.
- 0:14Speaker 1: But Dr. Katina and I really tried. And unfortunately, we
- 0:18Speaker 1: weren't able to do video, but that's okay.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah, we, you know, we, it comes up and we
- 0:24Speaker 2: talk about God, whether they're Christian, Muslim, you know, that
- 0:26Speaker 2: everybody here has faith. It's different here in Africa. I
- 0:29Speaker 2: think in general, I mean, obviously, you can't generalize too much,
- 0:32Speaker 2: but certainly in rural Africa, where I've spent most of
- 0:34Speaker 2: my last 26 years, people are very open to religion
- 0:38Speaker 2: and faith. Whether you're Christian, whether you're Muslim, whether you're– actually,
- 0:41Speaker 2: when you're an animist, you say, you know, all this
- 0:45Speaker 2: stuff comes from God, or, you know, I deal a
- 0:49Speaker 2: lot with– I deal a lot with infertile couples here,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and we don't have that many tools at our disposal
- 1:00Speaker 2: to treat infertility. We have a few that are exposure.
- 1:04Speaker 2: We can do a few things, we can do a
- 1:06Speaker 2: few tests, but I just have to say eventually, like, hey,
- 1:09Speaker 2: we've done what we can here, but in the end,
- 1:12Speaker 2: all children come help for this kind of thing they
- 1:18Speaker 2: all they all accept it they're not happy they want
- 1:20Speaker 2: to check because for an african woman to not have
- 1:23Speaker 2: a child is the biggest curse they have to have
- 1:25Speaker 2: a kid and uh so it's a huge huge curse
- 1:29Speaker 2: and for a lot of the women if they're infertile
- 1:32Speaker 2: the husband will will divorce them or you know polygamy
- 1:35Speaker 2: here is very common so they just take another wife
- 1:38Speaker 2: but kind of ignore that wife who can't so it's
- 1:40Speaker 2: a shame and that woman It happens all the time here.
- 1:43Speaker 2: They don't divorce so often. Sometimes they do if the
- 1:46Speaker 2: wife can't have a kid. But they'll often just take
- 1:49Speaker 2: on a second or third wife and just ignore that
- 1:52Speaker 2: one that's infertile. And it's a shame. She's in that village,
- 1:55Speaker 2: in that community. It's a big shame on her. She
- 1:58Speaker 2: did something wrong to warrant that infertility. So it's a
- 2:01Speaker 2: terrible burden for them. Um, but they, you know, I
- 2:05Speaker 2: talked to them openly about this thing a lot and they,
- 2:06Speaker 2: they accept it. They don't in issues with death. Nobody,
- 2:10Speaker 2: people here don't fight it. We're in the U S we're,
- 2:13Speaker 2: we're very, our approach to death is that it's almost
- 2:15Speaker 2: like an insult. Like how dare you die? Like you
- 2:18Speaker 2: can't do that. Like that's forever. And, uh, say, well,
- 2:23Speaker 2: maybe we don't, but we all do die. And I
- 2:25Speaker 2: remember one thing that struck me, it was one of
- 2:28Speaker 2: our staff. This was a few, some years ago, his
- 2:30Speaker 2: kid died. His baby was like a year old and
- 2:33Speaker 2: the baby had pneumonia. We tried everything to try to
- 2:37Speaker 2: treat this kid and the baby died. And I was crushed.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I'm like, man, I was like, I felt so awful.
- 2:42Speaker 2: And I remember saying, look, man, I'm really sorry. You're
- 2:45Speaker 2: about your, your child. And, deal with cody he says
- 2:48Speaker 2: doctor hey doctor don't worry if you know if it's
- 2:51Speaker 2: in god's plan we can't we can't change that and
- 2:54Speaker 2: that was it and he was like like he he
- 2:56Speaker 2: was he was grieving right he was heartbroken his child
- 2:59Speaker 2: died but he accepted it and said look man you
- 3:02Speaker 2: know things happen you know and uh bad things happen
- 3:07Speaker 2: and i can't explain everything but if that's how god
- 3:10Speaker 2: has willed it for whatever reason i don't have all
- 3:12Speaker 2: the answers i'm just gonna accept it and go ahead
- 3:15Speaker 2: you know, kind of like Job, you know, Job was
- 3:18Speaker 2: grieving and distressed and said, you know,
