- 0:00Speaker 1: And now, Effective Communication with Phil Zeller, CEO, Dale Carnegie,
- 0:05Speaker 1: Southwest Michigan.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hey, that was Charlie Brown's teacher!
- 0:16Speaker 1: Ha ha ha! Remember that Charlie Brown's teacher? What the
- 0:21Speaker 1: heck was Charlie Brown's teacher telling us?
- 0:29Speaker 1: And of course, you were watching that cartoon
- 0:34Speaker 1: series back in the day and you had no idea
- 0:38Speaker 1: what Charlie Brown's teacher was talking about, right? Well, when's
- 0:43Speaker 1: the last time you sat through a presentation where it
- 0:46Speaker 1: sounded just like that? What in the world is this
- 0:50Speaker 1: person talking about? I don't get it. Well, welcome to
- 0:57Speaker 1: Effective Communication. Phil Zeller, your host. Always a pleasure and
- 1:00Speaker 1: a privilege to be with you. You want to make
- 1:03Speaker 1: sure your presentations have impact. So today, a fundamental thing
- 1:07Speaker 1: that you got to do to have impact is You
- 1:10Speaker 1: got to do this, folks. You got to do this
- 1:13Speaker 1: because the alternative is if you don't do this, you're
- 1:17Speaker 1: going to sound like Charlie Brown's teacher and people are
- 1:20Speaker 1: not going to want to listen to you. So we
- 1:22Speaker 1: want you to be successful. We want you to be impactful.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You know what? Maximize the efficient use of your time.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And that's what it's all about, effective communication. So the
- 1:33Speaker 1: challenge is that when people are listening to you, what
- 1:39Speaker 1: are they picking up? with what you're laying down? Do
- 1:42Speaker 1: they feel how you feel? Does it come through in
- 1:46Speaker 1: what you're saying? Or does it just sound like, ah,
- 1:48Speaker 1: you just whip something together and no, you don't really care.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Or you're just complaining about it, right? I mean, have
- 1:55Speaker 1: you sat through a presentation where you just listen to
- 1:57Speaker 1: somebody complain? It's like, please turn it off, turn it off.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Nobody wants to hear that. Go back to principle one.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Dale Carnegie said it, principle number one on how to
- 2:04Speaker 1: win friends and influence people. Don't criticize, condemn others. Or complain.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Nobody wants to hear you complain. Nobody wants to hear it.
- 2:13Speaker 1: You know what they really want to hear from you?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Is they want hope. They want something to get better.
- 2:18Speaker 1: They want to see a positive change. They want to
- 2:21Speaker 1: get off the crazy train. They want things to get better.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Oh boy, please. In the political season that we're in,
- 2:29Speaker 1: as always, it seems like we need to teach politicians this.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Please stop with the crazy train. Just sitting here complaining
- 2:35Speaker 1: about how life is awful because you think that's going
- 2:38Speaker 1: to get people to buy into what you have to say.
- 2:41Speaker 1: That will last about two seconds before they realize you
- 2:43Speaker 1: don't have anything to stand on. So you want to
- 2:46Speaker 1: stand on something. So stand on the positive feeling and
- 2:53Speaker 1: the positive change that's going to happen in with what
- 2:57Speaker 1: you're presenting on. Focus on what's going to happen after
- 3:03Speaker 1: people listen to you and hear your passion come through
- 3:07Speaker 1: about what can improve and what can get better. That's
- 3:11Speaker 1: what they want. Oh my gosh. Every politician, I want
- 3:15Speaker 1: to shake them awake. This is fundamentals 101 of communication.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Stop complaining. It's tiring. You're not going to make the
- 3:25Speaker 1: world better You're making it worse. Let's make it better.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Here's how you do it. You talk about the positive
- 3:33Speaker 1: changes and the positive things that will happen and the
- 3:37Speaker 1: positive difference that's going to happen. Well, I do want
- 3:41Speaker 1: to share with you, our audiences are pretty smart. Now,
- 3:45Speaker 1: they watch us. They see what we're saying. They see
- 3:48Speaker 1: what we're doing. They're looking for congruency. People are fact-checking you, right? Right.
- 3:53Speaker 1: They're going out there, they're checking, is this person congruent
- 3:57Speaker 1: with what they're saying? So this fundamental truth is if
- 4:01Speaker 1: you really want to have impact in your presentations, it's
- 4:05Speaker 1: something that we talked about on the show. You got
- 4:07Speaker 1: to live it. You got to know it. You got
- 4:10Speaker 1: to prepare yourself for it. And that passion and that
- 4:13Speaker 1: positivity toward the subject that you're talking about has to
- 4:17Speaker 1: come through. It has to come through to your audience.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Because they're going to decide whether they buy in or not.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And they're going to decide based upon what they think.
- 4:30Speaker 1: But they don't know everything you know. They just know
- 4:33Speaker 1: the way that you're presenting it. They just know through
- 4:36Speaker 1: the way that you're engaged and passionate about what you're sharing,
- 4:39Speaker 1: that boy, this is meaningful to you. And oh my gosh,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you've got my attention. So now how do I benefit
- 4:48Speaker 1: from what you're sharing with me? Well, the way we
- 4:51Speaker 1: do that is as presenters, as you present in your thoughts,
- 4:55Speaker 1: is to make sure you always put them in a
- 4:57Speaker 1: positive light. Fundamentally, they want something better. That's truly what
- 5:05Speaker 1: they want. So as you prepare your presentations, as you
- 5:09Speaker 1: think about the impact you want to have on that
- 5:12Speaker 1: audience or your listeners, Ask yourself, do your feelings, does
- 5:17Speaker 1: your energy match the importance of your message? And if
- 5:21Speaker 1: you can get that across and your positive feelings, you'll
- 5:24Speaker 1: have the impact on your audience that you want to have.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Now go make it happen.
