- Lucas: Hey, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, I'm here with Luna. Luna: Hi everyone! We've been buying a lot of things at the market lately, right? Chicken, eggs, rice, noodles, cooking oil... Lucas: Right, but today we're adding something that really makes the food sing: rempah. Spices. Luna: Ooh, I love spices. So, how do I say 'I want spices'? Lucas: You can say 'Saya mahu rempah.' Let's break it down. Saya mahu — I want, rempah — spices. Together: Saya mahu rempah. Luna: Saya mahu rempah. Saya mahu rempah. Got it. Lucas: Perfect. Now, if you want to know the price per kilo, you can ask 'Berapa harga sekilo?' Berapa — how much, harga — price, sekilo — per kilo. Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? So that's like 'how much per kilo'? Lucas: Exactly. Berapa harga sekilo? Let's say you want turmeric. Turmeric in Malay is kunyit. Luna: Kunyit. Saya mahu kunyit. I want turmeric. Lucas: Yes! And if you want curry powder, it's serbuk kari. Serbuk means powder, kari is curry. Saya mahu serbuk kari. Luna: Saya mahu serbuk kari. That's a handy one. And what if I want to ask if the spice is spicy? Lucas: You can say 'Rempah ini pedas?' Rempah ini — this spice, pedas — spicy. So, 'Rempah ini pedas?' Luna: Rempah ini pedas? Good to know. I'm not a fan of super spicy. Lucas: Understandable. Now, one more: black pepper is lada hitam. You can say 'Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam.' Sedikit means a little. Luna: Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. I want a little black pepper. That's perfect for me. Lucas: So let's imagine we're at the spice stall. You walk up and say...? Luna: Saya mahu rempah. Lucas: The seller says 'Rempah apa?' What spice? You say...? Luna: Saya mahu kunyit. Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: Oh that's so good. You're ready for the market. Luna: Honestly, if today was worth a coffee to you, that's the link — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: Yeah, it's just a small way to keep these lessons free and ad-free. Okay, so let's practice. Repeat after me: Rempah ini pedas? Luna: Rempah ini pedas? Lucas: And if it's not spicy, the seller might say 'Tak pedas.' Tak means no or not. Tak pedas. Luna: Tak pedas. Good to know. Lucas: Let's do a little dialogue. You're at the stall. You say 'Saya mahu serbuk kari.' Go ahead. Luna: Saya mahu serbuk kari. Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: The seller says 'Lima ringgit sekilo.' Five ringgit per kilo. You ask 'Rempah ini pedas?' The seller says 'Tak pedas.' You're happy. Luna: Perfect. Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam juga. I want a little black pepper too. Lucas: Awesome. So today we learned: Saya mahu rempah, Berapa harga sekilo, Saya mahu kunyit, Saya mahu serbuk kari, Rempah ini pedas, and Saya mahu sedikit lada hitam. Great job, everyone. Luna: Practice these phrases, and next time at the pasar, you'll spice up your Malay. See you next time! Lucas: Sampai jumpa lagi!
