- 0:08This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:12Before we get started today, I just want
- 0:14to give you a heads up because I
- 0:16haven't mentioned it before.
- 0:17There is a study and reflection guide to
- 0:19go with every single episode of Finding God
- 0:21at Work on our website.
- 0:23So if you just go to MissionCentral.Church
- 0:25and then click podcast, you can find whatever
- 0:28episode you're looking for, and there's a one
- 0:30or two page PDF there that kind of
- 0:31walks you through the quotes that I include,
- 0:34additional questions for reflection, and some study notes.
- 0:36So if that's helpful for you, just wanted
- 0:38to make sure you knew that resource was
- 0:39around.
- 0:40Now we can get started.
- 0:46In our current series, Imagining Work, we're asking
- 0:48the question, what story about work am I
- 0:51living in?
- 0:52And in this part of the series, we're
- 0:53looking at key images that can help us
- 0:56live inside the story that God is telling
- 0:58about work on the pages of the Bible.
- 1:00And I'm really excited about today's image, which
- 1:03is artist.
- 1:04What does it mean for us to be
- 1:05artists in our work and to encounter Jesus
- 1:08as an artist in his work?
- 1:11So I actually want to start with a
- 1:12little known passage in the book of Exodus.
- 1:14It's not the kind of passage that shows
- 1:16up in children's storybook bibles or that there's
- 1:19little coloring sheets for it at Sunday school,
- 1:21although maybe it should be because it's so
- 1:23key and so important for the way we
- 1:25think about our work.
- 1:27This is Exodus chapter 31, and the context
- 1:30is God has given Moses all of the
- 1:33instructions he needs about the design of the
- 1:35tabernacle, the place where people would meet the
- 1:38presence of God and worship, and of the
- 1:40Ark of the Covenant within that tabernacle, the
- 1:42special place of God's presence.
- 1:46And then God says this.
- 1:49Then the Lord said to Moses, See, I
- 1:51have chosen Bezalel, son of Uri, the son
- 1:53of her, of the tribe of Judah, and
- 1:55I have filled him with the Spirit of
- 1:57God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all
- 2:01kinds of crafts, to make artistic designs for
- 2:04work in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut
- 2:06and set stones, to work in wood, and
- 2:09to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship.
- 2:11Moreover, I have appointed Oholi, son of Ahashamak,
- 2:14of the tribe of Dan, to help him.
- 2:17Also, I have given skill to all the
- 2:19craftsmen to make everything I have commanded you.
- 2:23Now, this is a really momentous moment.
- 2:28That's redundant.
- 2:29This is a really important moment, a key
- 2:31moment, a momentous occasion, because God is saying
- 2:35that he's going to fill someone with his
- 2:37spirit.
- 2:38And this is actually the first time in
- 2:40the entire Torah when God announces that he
- 2:42will fill someone with his spirit.
- 2:45And he's filling someone with his spirit for
- 2:48a specific purpose.
- 2:49And what's that purpose?
- 2:51It's to do the work of art.
- 2:53He's filling two artists, two craftsmen and their
- 2:57team of craftsmen, Bezalel and Oholiab, to build
- 3:01the Ark of the Covenant, to make it
- 3:03beautiful, to work in metal, to work in
- 3:05wood, and to do everything necessary for the
- 3:07other parts of the tabernacle as well.
- 3:10So why does God do this?
- 3:12Why is it that this is the moment
- 3:14when he announces he's going to fill someone
- 3:16with his spirit out of all the other
- 3:18moments that we might think of, like the
- 3:20parting of the Red Sea or something more
- 3:22dramatic?
- 3:23Why is it this artistic moment that God
- 3:25chooses?
- 3:27Well, one sort of mundane reason is that
- 3:30artistic work is hard to actually make all
- 3:33of the detailed elements of the tabernacle and
- 3:36of the Ark and the related things is
- 3:39going to take really hard work.
- 3:41And God is supplying the power for that
- 3:43hard work by giving his spirit.
- 3:45So that's one thing.
- 3:47But there were other hard things that God
- 3:50had asked people to do, and he didn't
- 3:51especially announce that he was going to fill
- 3:53them with his spirit for those things.
- 3:55We can think of lots of examples like
- 3:56that.
- 3:57But the other thing is that the tabernacle
- 4:00and the Ark of the Covenant, especially, were
- 4:03the place of God's presence.
- 4:05These were the most holy things that would
- 4:08ever have existed up to this point in
- 4:11human history.
- 4:12They were set apart for the presence of
- 4:14God.
- 4:15And so these craftsmen, even before these items
- 4:18are used in worship, even when they're just
- 4:20being created, are also set apart for the
- 4:24work of creating them by being filled with
- 4:27God's spirit.
- 4:29Okay, so what does that mean for us
- 4:31now?
- 4:32Well, I first want to give a brief
- 4:35word to those who are literal artists.
- 4:38So if you're a dancer or a singer
- 4:40or a writer or a songwriter, or if
- 4:44you work with clay or hands-on sculpture
- 4:47of some kind, or if you're a choreographer
- 4:48or an architect, if you're any kind of
- 4:50creative worker in that traditional sense, listen up.
- 4:54This is for you.
- 4:55When we think about the work of art,
- 4:59there is a special dignity and importance to
- 5:03art in the kingdom of God.
- 5:05We see that in this moment when the
- 5:07Holy Spirit is poured out on craftsmen and
- 5:09artists to prepare the tabernacle and the ark.
- 5:14At the same time, that is not limited
- 5:16to the context of worship or the context
- 5:18of formal ministry.
- 5:21We might think, oh yeah, so like if
- 5:23I'm writing a worship song, then that's kind
- 5:25of like what Bezalal was doing because he
- 5:27was preparing something for worship.
- 5:29But art, even in a secular context, can
- 5:32be ministry.
- 5:35And that's because, just like Bezalal was set
- 5:37apart by receiving the Holy Spirit of God,
- 5:40if you are in Christ, you are filled
- 5:42with the Holy Spirit of God.
- 5:44You are part of God's temple, his presence,
- 5:47by being part of the church and incorporated
- 5:49into Christ.
- 5:51You bring the Holy Presence of God with
- 5:53you in your body into whatever work you
- 5:56do, even if it's a secular art project.
- 6:00So I think of my friend Adam.
- 6:02He works on the TV show Spidey and
- 6:04His Amazing Friends.
- 6:05This is not a Christian show.
- 6:07It's not about worship.
- 6:08It has some nice little lessons about teamwork,
- 6:10but you know that's as close as it
- 6:12gets to a kind of spiritual message.
- 6:14And it's enjoyed by toddlers who watch Disney
- 6:17Plus and who like Spider-Man and his
- 6:19amazing friends.
- 6:20But my friend Adam, when he does his
- 6:22animation work for that, he's filled with the
- 6:24Spirit of God.
- 6:25And he's bringing the presence of God with
- 6:27him in his character and the way he
- 6:29interacts with his co-workers and in the
- 6:31way he does his art for that project.
- 6:34And so he is ministering that reality of
- 6:37God's holiness through that art, even in a
- 6:40hidden way that shows up in that television
- 6:42show.
- 6:43And so whatever your artistic context is, that
- 6:45can be true for you too.
- 6:47You are set apart because you're filled with
- 6:50the Spirit of God.
- 6:52Okay, so that's for those who are in
- 6:55creative work fields.
- 6:57But what about the rest of us?
- 6:59Maybe you don't do artistic work.
- 7:02Maybe you're a plumber or a food banker
- 7:05or a math teacher and maybe you're one
- 7:08of those people who might even say, oh,
- 7:09I'm not that creative.
- 7:12Well, I've got news for you too.
- 7:14Okay, so first part of my news is
- 7:16that you are creative, right?
- 7:18When anybody says, oh, I'm not that creative.
- 7:20I think what they're saying is, I'm not
- 7:22creative in a traditional sense, right?
- 7:24Like, I don't paint or do pottery or
- 7:26dance or things like that.
- 7:29But even if you don't do those things,
- 7:30you're still creative.
- 7:32Creativity is all about bringing things together in
- 7:35a new way.
- 7:36So just an example from plumbing.
- 7:38Let's say you're trying to fix a pipe
- 7:40and you have to be really careful not
- 7:42to damage, you know, the wall or the
- 7:45casing around the pipe and it's hard to
- 7:46get to.
- 7:47And so you combine a couple tools.
- 7:48Maybe you grab like a mirror that you
- 7:50don't normally need to use and a special
- 7:52wrench and you're problem-solving by bringing the
- 7:54mirror and the wrench together.
- 7:55Well, that's creativity.
- 7:57Even though it's not musical or, you know,
- 8:00painting or something like that, that's creative plumbing.
- 8:04That's still creative work.
- 8:05That matters.
- 8:06And that can be true in any field.
- 8:08You're always in some way bringing new things
- 8:10together.
- 8:11So your work is creative.
- 8:13But here's the other thing and we got
- 8:14to talk about beauty.
- 8:16One of the reasons we appreciate the traditional
- 8:18arts is that they can make beauty accessible.
- 8:23But there's also a beauty in a job
- 8:25well done regardless of what that job is.
- 8:29And in our last episode, I mentioned Timothy
- 8:31Keller's book Every Good Endeavor.
- 8:33In that same book, he has this beautiful
- 8:35phrase.
- 8:35He calls it the Ministry of Competence.
- 8:38That when you do your job well, when
- 8:40you're competent at it, it doesn't matter what
- 8:42your job is.
- 8:44That's ministry.
- 8:46Because you're filled with the Spirit of God,
- 8:48just like Bezalel was, just like a holy
- 8:50ab was, and you are doing that work
- 8:53well.
- 8:55And that brings a little bit of God's
- 8:56beauty and goodness into the world, even if
- 8:58that work isn't a traditionally creative task.
- 9:02Another way to say this same thing is
- 9:04that you are an artist, even if you're
- 9:07not in an artistic field.
- 9:08You are an artist of X.
- 9:11So there's another Christian leader I really respect
- 9:14named Leighton Ford.
- 9:15He was part of the Billy Graham Evangelistic
- 9:17Association for a long time.
- 9:19And then for the past several decades, he's
- 9:20led a ministry helping train and coach leaders
- 9:23at the heart level.
- 9:25And he likes to say that he's a
- 9:26friend on the journey and an artist of
- 9:29the soul.
- 9:30I just love that.
- 9:32Because he's working with people, right?
- 9:33So he's like, well, I'm an artist, but
- 9:35I'm an artist of the soul.
- 9:36I'm helping people understand how what's inside them
- 9:39is affecting their work and their leadership.
- 9:42Well, you might be an artist of the
- 9:43soul if you work with people, but you
- 9:45also might be an artist of pipes, or
- 9:48an artist of parallelograms, right?
- 9:50Or an artist of paperwork.
- 9:52You're an artist of something, even if your
- 9:55work isn't particularly artistic in a traditional sense.
- 10:00And that means that your work has special
- 10:02dignity, right?
- 10:03It doesn't matter what kind of work it
- 10:06is.
- 10:06If you do it well, it has the
- 10:09dignity of being an expression of the power
- 10:12of the Spirit of God within you that
- 10:14ministers the reality of God's goodness in the
- 10:17world.
- 10:18That's amazing.
- 10:20That's wonderful.
- 10:21That's something to keep in the back of
- 10:22your mind and your heart as you go
- 10:24to work each day.
- 10:27But now let's turn our eyes toward Jesus.
- 10:30You might ask, was Jesus an artist?
- 10:33And we do have that one passage of
- 10:34him scribbling in the sand, but we don't
- 10:36really know what he scribbled.
- 10:37He wasn't an artist in a traditional sense.
- 10:40He might actually be more in this second
- 10:41category.
- 10:42Although this is just too good to pass
- 10:45by, there was a scholar named Charles Fox
- 10:48Bernie, who in 1925 published a book called
- 10:51The Poetry of Our Lord.
- 10:53And it's a little bit nerdy, but you
- 10:55might know the New Testament was written in
- 10:57Greek, but the sayings of Jesus when he
- 11:00first said them would have been in the
- 11:01language of Aramaic.
- 11:03So even the gospel writers and others were
- 11:05translating from those verbal accounts in Aramaic into
- 11:08Greek, which was the lingua franca of the
- 11:10time.
- 11:12So what Charles Fox Bernie did is he
- 11:14thought, well, why don't we go backwards?
- 11:15Why don't we take the Greek sayings, translate
- 11:17them into ancient Aramaic, and see what they
- 11:19sound like?
- 11:20And what he found is a lot of
- 11:22Jesus' teachings and sayings rhymed, and they had
- 11:26rhythm.
- 11:26They had meter.
- 11:28Even the Lord's Prayer rhymes.
- 11:30And so Bernie argues that Jesus was a
- 11:33poet.
- 11:35And I love that, that Jesus in his
- 11:38teaching found a way to do it with
- 11:40beauty, just that extra touch of elegance, of
- 11:44form, of something that matters.
- 11:47But in a deeper way, besides Jesus as
- 11:50a literal poetry, Jesus is also the poet
- 11:52of our souls.
- 11:54And I just want to turn to one
- 11:55key verse that you may already know.
- 11:57As we're thinking about the Spirit of God
- 11:59in dwelling people, Jesus is the one who
- 12:02gave us that spirit in the first place.
- 12:04And this is John chapter 20, verses 21
- 12:07and 22.
- 12:08When Jesus is resurrected from the dead and
- 12:10he appears to his disciples, he said, peace
- 12:13be with you, as the Father has sent
- 12:15me, I am sending you.
- 12:18And with that, he breathed on them and
- 12:20said, receive the Holy Spirit.
- 12:23It's Jesus' breath, his life, his resurrection life
- 12:27that he gives to us, that fills us
- 12:29with the Spirit of God.
- 12:31And that's what makes it so that our
- 12:33work that we do every day can be
- 12:36ministry, because we're carrying the presence of God
- 12:38with us into the work that we do.
- 12:42Jesus is the poet of our souls by
- 12:44his spirit.
- 12:49Lord Jesus, we want to meet you in
- 12:51that way.
- 12:51We want you to breathe on us, to
- 12:53fill us with your Holy Spirit, so that
- 12:55we can do our work well, so that
- 12:57we can engage in the ministry of competence,
- 12:59so that we can see that our work
- 13:00is beautiful work in your world.
- 13:04Let us do our work with you as
- 13:07you do your work in us.
- 13:10Amen.
- 13:14Thanks for listening.
