- 0:01Luke chapter 23. Let us pray.
- 0:06O heavenly Father, we thank you, Lord, for another day.
- 0:10We thank you, Lord, for waking us up this morning.
- 0:13We thank you, Lord, and we acknowledge that you are supreme
- 0:17over all of our circumstances. Lord, you are supreme over all
- 0:22of our emotions. And God, we get out of the way.
- 0:25Holy Spirit, teach us and guide us.
- 0:28Yes, let us keep our lamps full and our Wicks trim.
- 0:33Lord, we thank you for the finished work of the cross.
- 0:36We thank you for the full counsel of your word.
- 0:38And we say yes and Amen to all the promises contained in this
- 0:42good book. We say thank you Jesus for
- 0:46laying down your life and no one took it from you, but you
- 0:50willingly laid it down. And we see you high and lift it
- 0:53up. We look up and see you and we
- 0:56know that in you is our salvation.
- 1:00And so we look forward to seeing you face to face.
- 1:04We look forward to worshipping you.
- 1:06We look forward and we step into that bridal identity now and we
- 1:11walk in the dominion that you give us now and we say thank you
- 1:16Jesus, for what Adam lost. You got back, you snatched the
- 1:20keys. And Lord, we celebrate you.
- 1:23We celebrate the victory. We celebrate that we can have
- 1:26eternal life. And Lord, I just pray for many
- 1:30to come into the fold, many to find their salvation in you, for
- 1:34many to quit running and to finally surrender unto you.
- 1:38Lord, we love you. This in Jesus Christ, holy and
- 1:41precious name that I pray, Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 1:48And the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate.
- 1:54So we can see that Jesus had to stand many trials.
- 1:59He was arrested in the garden and then stood A mock trial
- 2:03before Annis and then Caiaphas. And now he went to the
- 2:08Sanhedrin, and here he is before Pilate and eventually to Herod,
- 2:14and you can see it was all just a bunch of rigamarole and there
- 2:20was no substance to any of it. And it was predicted long ago
- 2:24and was prophesied about, and it pleased the Father to crush him.
- 2:29Verse 2. And they began to accuse him,
- 2:31saying, we found this fellow perverting the nation,
- 2:35forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself
- 2:40is Christ, a king. So what did they do?
- 2:44They take him to Pilot and they're trying to nail some kind
- 2:49of substance to him, but there was nothing but hollowness
- 2:53behind it all. They're trying to say that he's
- 2:57wanting to overthrow the government and become the king
- 3:00and not pay taxes. They said nothing about his
- 3:04messianic claims. They brought no witnesses
- 3:07because all the witnesses could not come in agreement.
- 3:13And it was a hung jury and there was no real verdict to any of
- 3:24it. And Jesus here, he's silent
- 3:26before the shears and they're trying to nail them down.
- 3:30They're trying to pin them with some kind of charge, but none of
- 3:35it would stick. He was sinless, He was spotless,
- 3:38He was blameless. He never had to apologize for
- 3:41anything. And they knew it.
- 3:45But here they're trying to arouse some kind of reaction out
- 3:49of Pilot that he subverted and that he was trying to make
- 3:53himself out to be some kind of leader, some kind of king.
- 4:00And Pilot's not buying it. Verse 3.
- 4:03And Pilot asked him, saying, are you the king of the Jews?
- 4:08And he answered him and said, you say it.
- 4:10So you can see that they've already beat him and they've
- 4:13already struck him and spat upon him and ripped out his beard.
- 4:17And here you can see that Pilot is in amazement because they're
- 4:23trying to say that he's the king of the Jews.
- 4:27And Pilot is in amazement because he doesn't look like a
- 4:31king at all. For then said Pilate.
- 4:36To the chief priests and to the people.
- 4:38I find no fault in this man. He should have stuck with that
- 4:41first premonition. He should have stuck with it.
- 4:44But what did he do? He was a crowd pleaser, a people
- 4:48pleaser, and he was in fear that they were going to revolt and
- 4:53cause some kind of riot and that he would be deposed of his
- 4:56position. So what is he going to do?
- 5:00Verse 5 and they were the more fierce saying, he stirs up the
- 5:05people teaching throughout all the Jews beginning from from
- 5:09Galilee to this place. So you can see they're coming up
- 5:13with a bunch of lies about Jesus and Pilate can see through it.
- 5:19He might have been a brutal man, but he was not ignorant.
- 5:23He could see through all of their games. 6 When Pilate heard
- 5:29of Galilee, he asked whether the man were at Galilean. 7 And as
- 5:33soon as he knew that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent
- 5:37him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
- 5:42So you could see here that he's trying to get around.
- 5:45He's trying to find a way to release Jesus without a riot.
- 5:49So he sends him to Herod to have the blood on Herod's hand or to
- 5:53have the revolt on Herod's hand. And what's going to happen here?
- 5:57And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad, for he was
- 6:02desirous to see him for a long season, because he had heard
- 6:06many things of him, and he hoped to have seen some miracle done
- 6:09by him. So he just wanted to see the
- 6:12miracle worker. He didn't want to actually set
- 6:15him free or to find him guilty or to find him innocent.
- 6:20All he wanted to do was see some kind of miracle.
- 6:23And this is the same Herod that John the Baptist was given the
- 6:28head. He gave the head to Herodias
- 6:32because of the dance of the daughter.
- 6:34And you could see here that this man was just some kind of
- 6:38amusement seeker. He was not a true seeker of the
- 6:42faith. 9 Any question with him in many words, but he answered
- 6:49him nothing. 10 And the chief priest and the scribe stood and
- 6:53vehemently accused him. 11 And Herod with his men of war, sent
- 6:58him at naughty and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous
- 7:01robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
- 7:04So you could see here that Herod just mocks Jesus.
- 7:08Herod didn't really care that he was the Son of God.
- 7:11Herod just wanted to see some kind of miracle, and when Jesus
- 7:15wouldn't give it to him, what did he do?
- 7:17He just sent them back to Pilot. He erode.
- 7:20He arrayed him in some gorgeous robe. 12 In the same day, Pilot
- 7:24and Herod were made friends together, for before they were
- 7:27at enmity between themselves. So you can see here that all of
- 7:33this caused Herod and Pilot to start becoming friends again.
- 7:37And if they can be friends, surely Christians can be
- 7:40friends. 13 And Pilot, when he had called together the chief
- 7:46priests and the rulers of the people, 14 said unto them, You
- 7:50have brought this man unto me as one that perverts the people,
- 7:54and behold, I have examined him before you.
- 7:57I found no fault in this man touching those things where you
- 8:00accuse him, Pilot saying, Here, guys, listen up, let's get real,
- 8:06this man has done nothing wrong. He was innocent. 15 No, nor yet,
- 8:14Herod, for I sent you to him. And lo, nothing worthy of death
- 8:18is done unto him. So he even had him cross
- 8:20examine, and he could see that it was out of covetousness that
- 8:25they had given him over and they wanted him put to death.
- 8:28And the Jews didn't have the Sanhedrin did not have the
- 8:33ability to put him to death, and they needed Rome to do it, and
- 8:37they were trying to get Rome to do their dirty work.
- 8:40And you could see that it was the this great plan of God that
- 8:44he had from the beginning, but it did not excuse any of these
- 8:47men. 16 I will therefore chastise him and release him.
- 8:52This would have been a scourging unlike anything that we could
- 8:57even imagine. It would have been the ripping
- 8:59of his flesh. This wasn't just a casual
- 9:02beating. This wasn't just the 39 lashes.
- 9:06This was the cat of Nine Tails ripping open his back and
- 9:11causing him to go into shock. 17 for of necessity he must release
- 9:191 unto them at the feast. This was a way to try and
- 9:23appease the crowd. He would release 1 prisoner to
- 9:26him, but he picked the most ruthless. 18 And they cried out
- 9:33all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us
- 9:38Barabbas. We are Barabbas, by the way,
- 9:41we're the filthiest of the filthy. 19 who for a certain
- 9:46sedition made in the city and for murder was cast into prison.
- 9:5020 Pilot therefore willing to release Jesus, spoke again to
- 9:54them. 21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
- 10:00Look at how they are just wanting Jesus to die and they're
- 10:04not even given into sensibility or common sense.
- 10:09They were delusional friends and it's no different in our day and
- 10:12our hour. There's so many people who do
- 10:14not want to listen to sound doctrine.
- 10:17They are delusional, and it's because they love evil. 22 And
- 10:22he said unto them the third time, Why?
- 10:25What evil has he done? I found no cause of death in
- 10:28him. I will therefore chastise him
- 10:31and let him go. 23 And they were instant with loud voices
- 10:35requiring that he might be crucified.
- 10:38And the voices of them and of the chief priest prevailed. 24
- 10:42And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
- 10:47Pilate should have stuck with his first thought that they was
- 10:50guilty and they was innocent and he found no guilt in him
- 10:53friends. But what did he do?
- 10:55He gave over to the masses, and Pilot will go down in history as
- 11:00the one that murdered Jesus. 25 And he released unto them him
- 11:08that first sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they
- 11:12had desired. But he delivered Jesus to their
- 11:14will. 26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one
- 11:18Simon, a sirenian coming out of the country, and on him they
- 11:23laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
- 11:26Jesus was in such agony. Jesus was in such shock that he
- 11:31was too weak to carry the crossbeam friends that would
- 11:35have weighed between 75 and 125 lbs.
- 11:39And Jesus could not carry it. So they picked this man out of
- 11:42the crowd to make him carry it. 27 And there followed him a
- 11:48great company of people and of women, which also be wailed and
- 11:52lamented him. 28 But Jesus turning unto them, said,
- 11:57Daughters of Jerusalem, Weep not for me, but weep for yourselves
- 12:02and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming, in
- 12:06the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren in the
- 12:09wombs that never bore, and the paps which never gave suck. 30
- 12:14Then shall they begin to say, to the mountains fall on us, and to
- 12:19the hills cover US. 31 For if they do these things in a green
- 12:23tree, which shall be be done in the dry, He's referencing AD 70,
- 12:28but he's also referencing the seven-year tribulation.
- 12:31He's referencing the depravity of humanity.
- 12:34He's saying, look, there's coming a day where they will
- 12:39care nothing for nursing women, they will care nothing for
- 12:42children and elderly, and they will strike them down.
- 12:46If they do it now to an innocent man, how much more will they do
- 12:49it for greed and for their evil desires That'll that are never
- 12:54satisfied, friends. 32 And there were also two other malefactors
- 12:59LED with him to be put to death. 33 And when they were come to
- 13:03the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified
- 13:07him and the malefactors, one on the right hand and other on the
- 13:10left. 34 Then said, Jesus, father, forgive them, for they
- 13:17know not what they do, and they parted his clothing and they
- 13:21cast lots. How despicable.
- 13:23Here Jesus is praying for his enemies.
- 13:26He modeled that for us. And look at how the enemies are
- 13:29throwing dice for his clothing. 35 And the people stood
- 13:34beholding, and the rulers also with them derided him, saying he
- 13:38saved others, let him save himself, if he'd be Christ, the
- 13:42chosen of God. He for sure is Christ, He for
- 13:46sure is the chosen. And they would have done well to
- 13:49put their faith in him. But what did they do?
- 13:51They mocked him, they blasphemed him, they killed God.
- 13:56But it was only for a short time.
- 13:58He snatched the keys to death in the Hades, and he is a
- 14:01victorious friends. 37 and saying, If you be the king of
- 14:06the Jews, save yourself. 38 And the superscription also was
- 14:10written over him in Greek and Latin and Hebrew.
- 14:15This is the king of the Jews, and the Jews didn't like that
- 14:19Pilot had given him that title. 39 And one of the malefactors
- 14:24which hung railed on him, saying, If you be Christ, save
- 14:28yourself and US. 40 But the other answered and rebuked him,
- 14:32saying, Does not you fear God, saying that you are in the same
- 14:36condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we
- 14:41received the due reward for our deeds.
- 14:43But this man has done nothing amiss.
- 14:46He was innocent, He was not worthy to suffer a criminal's
- 14:50death, but they were. And this one finally comes to
- 14:54his senses and sees his need for the Lord Jesus Christ. 42 And he
- 15:00said unto Jesus, Lord, Remember Me when you come into your
- 15:07Kingdom. So here he acknowledges his
- 15:11Lordship, his deity. He acknowledges that he is God.
- 15:15And what does Jesus say? 43 And Jesus said unto him,
- 15:19Truly I say unto you, today you shall be with me in paradise.
- 15:24Think about it friends, this is where we're headed.
- 15:26If we will just sow this little 100 year time that God gives us,
- 15:32we're going to reap the righteousness and we're going to
- 15:36reap eternity and we're going to be given an eternal body to be
- 15:40there with them. Do not miss it friends.
- 15:42It's paradise 44 and it was about the 6th hour and there was
- 15:47darkness over all the earth until the 9th hour.
- 15:50And you know that we have the ability to go back and look at
- 15:55all of the weather and all the phenomenons and, and science has
- 16:00proved, history has proved that this event was factual. 45 And
- 16:06the sun was dark and the veil of the temple was ripped in the
- 16:09midst. We know it was ripped from top
- 16:11to bottom because it was not by human hands.
- 16:14God himself ripped the veil from top to bottom so that we can
- 16:18enter into the holiest of holy places. 46 And when Jesus had
- 16:22cried, with a loud voice he said, Father, into your hands I
- 16:28commend my spirit. And having said this, he gave up
- 16:32the ghost. No one took it from him. 47 Now
- 16:35when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying,
- 16:39certainly this was a righteous man, certainly this was God,
- 16:44certainly this was the Son of God. 48 And all the people that
- 16:49came together to that site, beholding the things which were
- 16:52done, struck their breast in return. 49 And all his
- 16:57acquaintance and the women that followed him from Galilee stood
- 17:00afar off beholding these things. You can see that they pondered
- 17:04them in their hearts with this all meant, and they thought that
- 17:07it was done, finished over. And Jesus is still working.
- 17:13He's going down to snatch the keys.
- 17:15He's going down to preach to the spirits in Abraham's bosom, and
- 17:20lead a great procession out of that place. 50 And behold, there
- 17:26was a man named Joseph, a counselor, and he was a good
- 17:29man, and a just. 51. The same had not consented to
- 17:34the council and deed of them. He was of Arimathea, a city of
- 17:40the Jews, who also himself waited for the Kingdom of God.
- 17:44He realized that Jesus was the Messiah. 52 This man went on to
- 17:49Pilate and begged the body of Jesus.
- 17:52I pray that you begged the body of Jesus.
- 17:54I pray that you are connected to him.
- 17:57I pray that you are a follower of the way. 53 And he took it
- 18:02down and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was
- 18:05cut out of stone, where no man was ever laid. 84 And that day
- 18:12was the preparation, and the Sabbath drew on. 55 And the
- 18:16women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after,
- 18:20and beheld the tomb, and how his body was laid.
- 18:24So we can see here that they knew where Jesus was laid, and
- 18:29they're going to come after the Sabbath to try and anoint him
- 18:34and try to get him ready for burial. 56 And they returned and
- 18:43prepared spices and ointments and rested the Sabbath day
- 18:46according to the commandment. How amazing is our God?
- 18:50He knows everything. How amazing is the Lord Jesus
- 18:54Christ? He's doing work even while they
- 18:57think that he's dead. And you and I have access to the
- 19:00throne room. Now you and I have resurrection
- 19:03power, and the same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives
- 19:07inside of us. And we can have the inheritance.
- 19:10We get to bring heaven to earth now and then.
- 19:12We're going to be there forevermore with Him.
- 19:15Praise God for these scriptures. I hope you've been blessed by
- 19:18this chapter. I know I sure have many times
- 19:22over. I'm praying for you.
- 19:24What an amazing chapter. We can munch on this for a
- 19:28lifetime. Suffice to say that Jesus is our
- 19:32everything and we love Him. I'm praying for every single one
- 19:36of you. I love you.
- 19:37We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 19:39God bless you.
