- 0:34Hello, and welcome to The Drive Thru.
- 0:36This is your host, Brad, speaking.
- 0:38With me, as always, is Eric and Tanya.
- 0:41Hello!
- 0:41This is the Winter Edition, and as you all know, The Drive Thru is our monthly recap,
- 0:46where we put together a menu of local, racing, and random car adjacent news.
- 0:50And now we're going to pull up window number one for some industry news.
- 0:54But before we do that, Brad, I just want to remind everybody that this is the
- 0:58last drive through episode of season one.
- 1:02So season two of break fix kicks off here at the beginning of March.
- 1:06We're excited to see what season two brings us.
- 1:08A lot of surprises, probably a lot of changes, lots of great
- 1:11guests and episodes that are.
- 1:12Coming out here over the next year.
- 1:14I just want to remind people that, you know, it's been a minute since we've
- 1:16done a proper drive thru episode.
- 1:18Hopefully you caught the last couple that came out.
- 1:20We had a really great remastered, would you like fries with that last month?
- 1:24And then some other things that we did in the previous months leading up until now.
- 1:28So our goal for this.
- 1:29Last drive through episode of season one is to capture some things
- 1:33that happened over the winter.
- 1:34You know, the motorsports world is pretty quiet.
- 1:36The, even the car sales world is pretty quiet.
- 1:39There's not a lot of debuts, but we found some, I think some good news out there.
- 1:42And we just, you know, want to talk about those things as we get prepped and we
- 1:45get excited for season two, the start of the next racing season, and we go
- 1:48from there and we see where things lead.
- 1:50So on that note, let's send it.
- 1:52So the first thing I want to talk about.
- 1:54Is Volkswagen 2022 Golf R based on the Mark 8 chassis.
- 2:00Yeah.
- 2:00I bet you all didn't know it was coming because they announced
- 2:02on the same day as the election.
- 2:04I don't know who the marketing guru was that decided we've
- 2:07got to announce on this day.
- 2:09Maybe it's because they're over in Germany and like the election
- 2:11is a non factor over there.
- 2:12I don't know.
- 2:13The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R, I think it looks terrible.
- 2:18Yeah, I'm just going to go ahead and throw that out there, but that's
- 2:20not what we're talking about today.
- 2:21We're talking about the power output, which is 315 horsepower up
- 2:26from apparently 287, 290, something like that in the previous model.
- 2:31Still the same two liter turbo.
- 2:33It's still going to have all wheel drive, but it's updated for motion system.
- 2:37It's going to work in conjunction with the electronic differentials
- 2:40and the dampening systems.
- 2:41They call it vehicle dynamics manager, torque vectoring and
- 2:45you know, all that funny stuff.
- 2:46Basically in layman's terms, press the go pedal, spin the wheels, magic happens,
- 2:51and the car just moves no matter what.
- 2:53I thought you were going to say in layman's terms, it's an Audi A3 or an
- 2:58Audi S3 with different skin on top of it.
- 3:01You
- 3:01Well, it actually looks more like a Q3 than an A3 to me.
- 3:06If you look at it, it looks like a mini minivan.
- 3:09It looks like it's lifted a little bit.
- 3:10It is.
- 3:11It's right up there with the BMW M8, right?
- 3:14I mean, it's gargantuan.
- 3:15I'm not a fan of the eighth series.
- 3:17I mean, I've always been a big proponent of the even number series.
- 3:21Volkswagen's are where they get it, right?
- 3:24Well, I'm with you.
- 3:25I think this one was a bit of a misstep.
- 3:26I mean, a lot of people like it.
- 3:27It's got a good aftermarket following already, just hasn't grown on me.
- 3:32And I haven't seen too many in person yet.
- 3:34And I think that's part of the problem.
- 3:35Maybe when I see one in person, it'll change my mind.
- 3:38But I do have a hard time with that front end, where it shares the look and feel
- 3:42of like the new Tiguan and the Touareg, or I guess it's not the Touareg anymore.
- 3:46It's the Atlas.
- 3:47I just, I don't get it.
- 3:48But I will say this, hats off to Volkswagen for finally putting out a Golf
- 3:53from the factory with over 300 horsepower.
- 3:56Sadly, I want to know how much this thing weighs, because if it's, 3600 pounds.
- 4:01The power to weight ratio is actually probably worse than some of the
- 4:04older R spec cars at this point.
- 4:07So what have we really gained at the end of the day?
- 4:09Well, I can tell you what Volkswagen is doing that is right.
- 4:12And they're releasing this car with a manual transmission option.
- 4:16Excuse
- 4:16me.
- 4:16Excuse
- 4:16me.
- 4:16What?
- 4:17Yes.
- 4:17And you're gonna love this figure.
- 4:19The reason they're releasing it with a manual in the U.
- 4:22S.
- 4:22Is because Ford 40 percent for 0 percent of all ours and GTI sold in the U.
- 4:30S.
- 4:30are sold with three pedals.
- 4:3260 percent of those cars are sold with DSG.
- 4:35That's mind boggling.
- 4:37In a market where the manual transmission is dying, you know,
- 4:42and all across the board, no matter what, 40 percent of these cars.
- 4:46So V Dub Kids, Dub Kids are keeping the manual alive.
- 4:50Manual Preservation Society is strong in the VAG community.
- 4:53I like that.
- 4:54The other side of that is the fact that they've gotten rid of the golf.
- 4:57The base level golf now is gone.
- 5:00You can only get a GTI and then you can get the R package,
- 5:03obviously, on top of that.
- 5:04I think that's interesting.
- 5:05And obviously, if you haven't heard the news, there's no longer a two
- 5:08door golf or GTI anymore, either.
- 5:11That was a big move they made last year or the year before to do away the two doors.
- 5:15So I look at this as maybe an olive branch to the Volkswagen community to say, Hey,
- 5:19you're giving us a manual transmission.
- 5:21Thank you for that.
- 5:22Still not a big fan of the four door move, but I get it.
- 5:25They're trying to maximize the platform.
- 5:28They're trying to, you know, minimize the amount of retooling that they're
- 5:31doing because the A3, the S3, the Golf, all those cars are all the same.
- 5:35It is sad though, to see the Beetle go away as we know that
- 5:38happened not too long ago.
- 5:40But on top of that, I think what pains me even more is there was always that
- 5:43glimmer of hope that we might get the Scirocco and now that along with the TT.
- 5:50Is done.
- 5:50There is no more of any of those types of cars and it's heartbreaking, but whatever,
- 5:55we've got to make progress or we're going to make room for other models to come in.
- 5:58They got rid of the beetle and now they're moving towards EVs.
- 6:01It's like the beetle is the perfect home for an EV, put the batteries in the back,
- 6:07like the original beetles had the engine.
- 6:12I mean, it's a perfect candidate and there's actually some, uh, you
- 6:15know, renderings of what a beetle could look like in Eevee and pretty
- 6:18much looks like a beetle, but it's got that futuristic y look.
- 6:21It's, they're pretty cool.
- 6:23Reconsider their, their lineup in the future.
- 6:25It would be nice to see the beetle back, but
- 6:28I agree with you there.
- 6:29And honestly.
- 6:30keeping the beetle design.
- 6:31If you kept the previous one and put the motor in the back, as you're
- 6:34suggesting, and even maybe did all wheel drive, the frunk would be larger by
- 6:40cubic volume than the current hatchback availability that the beetle has.
- 6:45So moving things around actually makes sense and you don't lose any people space.
- 6:49You probably gain some at the end of the day.
- 6:51So I'm with you.
- 6:51I mean, They're doing the, the bus, the ID one or whatever they
- 6:55called that thing or the ID buzz.
- 6:57Right.
- 6:57I mean, that's a cool idea.
- 6:58The beetle should be right there with it.
- 7:00And even maybe a Carmen Gia wink, wink, nudge, nudge, but
- 7:05I guess we'll see what the future holds, but
- 7:07with a beetle, I mean, they could do a dual motor version
- 7:11with a motor in the back and a motor in the front called an RSI.
- 7:15And have four, 500 equivalent horsepower would be ridiculous.
- 7:19All wheel drive beetle.
- 7:21No, no, the new, the new mantra is that we all aspire to own rental cars.
- 7:24So, you know, Hey, it's okay.
- 7:26Well, and the other thing is the beetle aesthetically is like designed
- 7:30to be electric because it has no fricking front grill, basically.
- 7:34Yeah, I agree with that
- 7:35too.
- 7:35In terms of all these new electrics that look kind of odd sometimes because
- 7:39you lose all that grill for the airflow that you don't need to an engine.
- 7:42It's like the beetle isn't going to look It's going to look right
- 7:46and the Fiat 500 right behind it, right?
- 7:48That's another one, another icon.
- 7:50And then I could see the mini going in that direction as well.
- 7:53I mean, again, those were three cars that had been competing with
- 7:56each other for such a long time.
- 7:58It just makes sense.
- 7:59Speaking of changing the automotive landscape, I don't know if everybody
- 8:03was paying attention over the last couple of months, we talked about it on
- 8:07several drive thru episodes, the whole Stellantis merger, which is Fiat Chrysler.
- 8:12Peugeot, Citroen, and all the other sub companies are now under one large
- 8:17conglomeration called Stellantis.
- 8:20It went official and they went IPO on the 19th of January, and they are now the
- 8:25fourth largest automaker in the world.
- 8:28There's a lot of stuff packed into that.
- 8:30If you're just kind of going to blow it off and be like, ah, it's just Chrysler.
- 8:33And we're just going to get more challengers making 9, 000 horsepower.
- 8:37That's not true either.
- 8:38I've heard rumors around the mill that.
- 8:41Because of the influence from the French, they're talking about
- 8:44scuttling the SRT division of Dodge.
- 8:48Yes, technically, the division that is known as the SRT
- 8:53engineering team is disbanded.
- 8:55However, the engineers were just moved into, uh, A new division
- 8:59of the global engineering team.
- 9:00So they all still exist.
- 9:01It's just they reorganized the structure and they're still going
- 9:05to develop cars bad with SRT and all the performance models.
- 9:09It's just that SRT is a standalone engineering group within the company.
- 9:13It's no longer that they're just rolled up into a larger engineering division.
- 9:17To your point.
- 9:18A lot of people don't know if you look back over the history.
- 9:21SRT was actually started by Iacocca and Shelby as a skunk works to
- 9:26get the Viper off the ground.
- 9:28So it's been in existence for quite a long time, even though cars didn't start
- 9:32carrying the badge until way later, but the Viper was the Genesis for that.
- 9:36So again, I guess there's a lot of confusion, a lot of
- 9:39clickbait out there to your point.
- 9:40Again, thank you for clarifying that we get excited about this.
- 9:44I don't think we want to see a thousand horsepower challengers go away because
- 9:47it gives us something to talk about.
- 9:49Uh, well, if.
- 9:50SRT was to disappear.
- 9:52I mean, I would be devastated.
- 9:54I mean, they're the last like holdout of making all these muscle
- 9:58cars, essentially what they are.
- 9:59I mean, in the traditional sense, like barbaric, you know, muscle cars, like
- 10:03Mercedes makes muscle cars and BMW.
- 10:06I mean, Mercedes definitely makes muscle cars with the big giant V8 up front and
- 10:10the rear wheel drive and everything, but they're overly complicated, you
- 10:13know, as the Germans like to do.
- 10:14Dodge, Chrysler, Stellantis.
- 10:17They still make.
- 10:19700 horsepower cars for the everyman, which I would be
- 10:23very sad if it disappeared
- 10:24and I was really excited about the SRT Pacifica.
- 10:27I mean, who doesn't want an 800 horsepower minivan?
- 10:30I mean, as Tanya was saying, if they're, they've been dispersed
- 10:33throughout the whole company and they're working in different divisions.
- 10:35Now, we're going to have the SRT Patriot.
- 10:38We're going to have the SRT front wheel drive though.
- 10:41It'll be perfect.
- 10:43Motor in the back in the, in the hatchback, it's going to be an 800
- 10:47horsepower hatchback, all wheel drive,
- 10:49like a, like an R5 turbo for the modern age, and we're going to talk
- 10:53about that car in a little bit.
- 10:55So there's a lot of movement going on there.
- 10:57I see Jeep really taking off.
- 10:59I'm just really not sure about Dodge.
- 11:01I would love to see some French cars over.
- 11:03Maybe we can finally buy a Peugeot, you know, get some hot
- 11:06hatchbacks, stuff like that.
- 11:07I'm being optimistic here, but I still think it's very cool.
- 11:11Cool.
- 11:11One other thing I will add from a historical perspective, this has really
- 11:15been in the works since the early 1980s.
- 11:19When Lee Iacocca took over Chrysler the first time, it was his goal and his
- 11:24ambition to build a global car company.
- 11:27And I think Stellantis is a move in realizing that dream that he had.
- 11:33And for those that don't know, he originally tried to do this with
- 11:36Volkswagen and it didn't work out.
- 11:38So this is really cool to see all these.
- 11:40Companies coming together and now in the top five.
- 11:44So Brad, you're a big Jeep guy.
- 11:45Why don't you talk about the new Jeep that is coming?
- 11:47And
- 11:48well, we were talking about the Volkswagen Golf R and I didn't get
- 11:51to say the price, the price is about 40, 000 give or take, but for that
- 11:55same money, you can get the new Jeep grand Cherokee L, which is coming out.
- 12:01Which if anybody's been paying attention to Jeep and Chrysler and Dodge, the
- 12:05sister relationship between the Grand Cherokee and the Durango, you will
- 12:09realize that this is really just a Durango because the Durango has always
- 12:13had since 2013, 14 or whatever, seven seats, you know, it's a three row.
- 12:18Uh, so this is basically going to do the same thing.
- 12:21It's going to be a stretched Grand Cherokee.
- 12:22It's about 6.
- 12:249 inches
- 12:24longer.
- 12:25Is that 6.
- 12:269 liters as well?
- 12:28Or is it just a small motor?
- 12:29Nope, nope, nope.
- 12:30It's just a small motor.
- 12:31It's just going to come with the 5.
- 12:327 liter V8 if you opt for the Overland or the Summit editions.
- 12:37If you go lower, it's going to be the Pentastar and no diesel
- 12:41option for the Grand Cherokee L.
- 12:43Yep, not going to happen in the Grand Cherokee L, at least to start.
- 12:47New interior.
- 12:48It's going to have 10.
- 12:491 inch gauge cluster dash 8.
- 12:514 engine votainment system.
- 12:54It's going to have, they're all going to have the eight speed automatic
- 12:56transmission, new air ride suspension, you know, all this fun stuff.
- 13:00Regular Grand Cherokee is going to be coming out a little later in the year.
- 13:04And that's going to have a hybrid option.
- 13:05So again, no talk of a diesel.
- 13:07Interesting.
- 13:08A hybrid option.
- 13:09That's really cool to know.
- 13:10So I wonder though, is the Grand Cherokee L just the entry level Wagoneer
- 13:16with slightly different sheet metal?
- 13:18I would liken it to the same thing as the Range Rover Sport
- 13:21that came out a few years ago.
- 13:23It was built on the, or the LR3 chassis, but it had the Range Rover bodywork.
- 13:28I think this is going to be kind of like a similar deal.
- 13:31And I think it's good because that helps us deal with that initial sticker shock,
- 13:35like we talked about in the previous drive through episodes about the grand Wagoneer
- 13:39and how expensive it was and who's going to pay 110 grand or whatever it was for
- 13:44a Jeep, you know, so if they're giving us an option that's similar, giving us
- 13:48that third row seat and getting people in at a more affordable price, like you
- 13:51said, in maybe that 40 or 50, 000 range, although even that is a lot of money.
- 13:56Yeah.
- 13:56That's not affordable.
- 13:57It's a better option than double that, you know, for the Wagoneer.
- 14:01Agreed, agreed.
- 14:02So what else is going on, Tanya?
- 14:03So we can recircle back to October, where we had reported on the new
- 14:10You can't pronounce it either.
- 14:11No, I can pronounce it.
- 14:13It's Tuatara.
- 14:14The high performance hyper car, whatever you want to call it, you know, back
- 14:19in October, it said it broke the speed record at over 300 miles an hour, 316.
- 14:2511 miles to be quite exact for average speed.
- 14:29And then shortly after that was released, suddenly everyone,
- 14:33well, that can't be right.
- 14:34Fact checking, something's wrong.
- 14:36Lag on the play.
- 14:38And so since then, they have redone their high speed test runs and have
- 14:45now with verified by whatever sources were there and double checking
- 14:49and triple checking, blah, blah.
- 14:51They have verified that they have indeed now taken the record for single
- 14:56run and average speed, fastest speed.
- 14:59Test run.
- 15:00So they averaged 282.
- 15:019 miles per hour, which beats the previous record of 277.
- 15:0787, which was the Konaseg, I believe in 2017.
- 15:10And their single speed run, cause they did a run up and down wherever they
- 15:14were, I think in Florida this time.
- 15:16They did 286.
- 15:181 miles per hour in one drag, and that beat the previous
- 15:21record of 285 miles per hour.
- 15:24So they do indeed now retain the title of.
- 15:28Fastest car,
- 15:30but it is a much narrower margin than originally stated,
- 15:34much narrower
- 15:34margin,
- 15:35unclear whether, you know, they were also saying, well, you know, we were
- 15:39still down on power during these runs and this, that, and the other.
- 15:42I don't know what all that means.
- 15:43I didn't research it much further.
- 15:45But for now they hold it and who knows, maybe there's still more in
- 15:48the motor that they can get out.
- 15:50I guess we'll see.
- 15:51Maybe it'll be future test runs.
- 15:52I think that it's a little disappointing that they didn't
- 15:55get over 300 miles per hour.
- 15:56I mean, all the, the hype machine was strong with this one.
- 16:00And when the video came out and all that other nonsense, amazing 300 miles an
- 16:05hour in a, in a street car on a road.
- 16:07Yeah, not, not true.
- 16:08Not the case.
- 16:09This is false news.
- 16:11You know where I'm putting my money though?
- 16:12And they've been really, really quiet.
- 16:15Salantas.
- 16:18I'm putting my money on Bugatti with that new car that they're building.
- 16:22They keep showing us like pictures of it and videos and
- 16:25it looks like the Batmobile.
- 16:27It pays homage to nothing.
- 16:29And it's really a step away for Volkswagen, the parent company from the,
- 16:34you know, R8 Avis, you know, going all the way back that they, they've been reusing
- 16:39that chassis forever that the Veyron and the Chiron, they were all built on
- 16:42basically the same car, this new Bugatti.
- 16:45Is a step in a different direction, you know, obviously it looks
- 16:48more like a Ferrari Enzo or a Lambo or something like that.
- 16:51And I think this is going to be the car that's going to go
- 16:55and try to break this record.
- 16:56I mean, the Veyron and the Chiron have always been up at the top, much
- 16:59like the Koenigsegg and whatnot.
- 17:00So I'm excited to see what comes next because again, they've been
- 17:03very hush hush about the specs and the numbers and that car.
- 17:07And there's just been a lot of wind tunnel work.
- 17:09So bum, bum,
- 17:10bum.
- 17:11As we know, during the winter, not a lot of cars debut, it's just kind of quiet
- 17:15time, you know, especially with, you know, the conditions that we're still in,
- 17:18you know, with COVID and whatnot, there hasn't been a lot of buzz in the car
- 17:22world in the spring when people can get out more and in the summer, you're going
- 17:25to start to see a lot more things pop.
- 17:27But the Super Bowl, which happened here in February, is
- 17:31one of those bastions of car ads.
- 17:33We're always looking for the hot new, you know, commercial proposing the new
- 17:36car that nobody's seen or, you know, the next Jason Statham movie that's going
- 17:40to feature, you know, an Audi or a BMW or, you know, whatever it might be.
- 17:44We won't talk about the game too much, but I wanted to Really kind
- 17:48of hone in on who's saying what and who's showing off what's new.
- 17:52And I was really surprised that right off the bat, GM came out swinging.
- 17:58I saw
- 17:58Will Ferrell was doing some weird stuff and a weird accent with
- 18:02looking all scraggly and stuff.
- 18:03I don't know.
- 18:03That was
- 18:04the GM commercial.
- 18:04That was, okay.
- 18:05Well, I didn't pay attention then.
- 18:06I don't know.
- 18:07So that's okay.
- 18:08But in that commercial, there were, it was a two parter and basically
- 18:11it's Will Ferrell versus Norway, you know, GM for everyone, you know,
- 18:16also showcasing their new logo, which is very EV focused and whatnot.
- 18:20But you got the first shots, real shots of the Hummer.
- 18:25And the Cadillac Lyric, which we talked about on a previous episode that Tanya
- 18:29went into detail of both of those cars, but you got to see them kind of running
- 18:33and driving and whatever, and they were both showcased, uh, in those videos.
- 18:36So I thought that was pretty cool.
- 18:38Curious to see where that goes.
- 18:39As we've mentioned before, both of those are a hundred thousand dollar car.
- 18:42I thought it was a little off to kind of throw them out there and you go,
- 18:46Ooh, ah, and then if you start to do the research on them, people are gonna
- 18:48be like, Oh my God, you know, these are, These are upper echelon vehicles.
- 18:52You know, how do we get into that market?
- 18:53Why are automakers gearing all these electric, building all these
- 18:59electric luxury cars, these a hundred thousand plus is I guess they've done
- 19:03their market research and there's a demand in that segment, there's more
- 19:09of a demand in that segment than in the 20 to 30, 000 mile range,
- 19:12like anything else.
- 19:14The early adopters are always more affluent people, and then they
- 19:18figure out a way to scale those down into the economy where then you
- 19:22end up with the econo boxes, right?
- 19:23So let's just say the technology that comes out in the Ferraris, they're
- 19:28gonna put it out there, it's gonna be expensive, and then it's gonna
- 19:30find its way into the base model.
- 19:32You know, Fiat 1 26 or 500 or something, like over time,
- 19:35I think it's a lot more challenging for people that are less affluent
- 19:38to enter the EV market because.
- 19:41If you got a lot of money to burn, then you can be like, Oh,
- 19:43I'm going to trade in my car.
- 19:44I just bought two years ago that barely has any miles.
- 19:47And I'm going to upgrade to EV hotness that's out right now.
- 19:50Whereas if you don't have a lot of money and you've still been running your
- 19:53Corolla for the last 10 years, chances are, you're going to keep running your
- 19:56Corolla till forever for a good many number of years before you, you upgrade
- 20:01to something else, definitely not going to be able to upgrade to some.
- 20:0580, 000 Tesla, because not at just the cost of the car, but if you have to
- 20:09put the charging infrastructure in your dwelling, and if you don't have a home,
- 20:15like what if you live in an apartment where you park on the street or you
- 20:18park in the garage or a lot somewhere?
- 20:20I mean, it's a long extension cable.
- 20:22I'm not really sure how, yeah, exactly.
- 20:24A long extension cable.
- 20:25I'm not sure how, how you do that.
- 20:27So it is.
- 20:28geared at the moment towards people that kind of have extra
- 20:31income that they can spend, they're going to market towards them.
- 20:35I mean, I guess it makes sense as it becomes more commonplace as sales
- 20:38go up, then slowly things level out.
- 20:40They bring in the entry level vehicles, lower tiers that are more affordable.
- 20:45For everybody,
- 20:46the litmus test here is Tesla.
- 20:48So Tesla selling the model S at 90, 000 or a hundred thousand or whatever it is.
- 20:52And if you're trying to enter that market and be competitive, you're trying to
- 20:55be competitive with that car, right?
- 20:56Cause that is the flagship.
- 20:58So I think everybody's going to come out the gate and a lot of people
- 21:01have adopted Tesla's and bought them.
- 21:02If you're willing to pay that kind of money, then the Cadillac
- 21:05is going to be priced like that.
- 21:06You know, the next thing that comes out is going to be priced the same way.
- 21:10So I think that's where they're at.
- 21:11And then, you know, Obviously Tesla's has made motions to try to make them
- 21:15more affordable with the model three and the model Y and stuff like that.
- 21:18But they're at a technological advantage because they've already pioneered
- 21:22it and they're scaling it down and everybody's trying to catch up.
- 21:25So we're going to see it happen, but I don't want it to be, you know,
- 21:29that there's the lyric and then we're back to the bolt again, right?
- 21:32Because that is just.
- 21:33Too much of a disparity between the upper and lower.
- 21:36Yeah, exactly.
- 21:37Something in the mid range.
- 21:37Exactly.
- 21:38There's already been news reported within the last week that, and it's not a lot,
- 21:43but still Tesla feeling pressure from the other manufacturers coming out with
- 21:47competition and lower priced cars, even if they're still, you know, way expensive.
- 21:52They're actually lowering the price on the model Y and the
- 21:56model three to, um, compete.
- 21:58So, I mean, it's not like, Oh, it dropped 10, 000 or anything.
- 22:01I mean, it's a thousand here, a couple thousand there because they're seeing
- 22:05that the other manufacturers coming out or have slightly more affordable.
- 22:09Is that due to an increase in home Depot parts?
- 22:12So it's gotten cheaper to manufacture them.
- 22:16I don't know.
- 22:16Have you been shopping in a home Depot lately?
- 22:18Ever since COVID everybody's shopping parts.
- 22:20That's true.
- 22:21Price applies because the demand is high.
- 22:24Exactly.
- 22:25So let's talk about some of the other ads that were during the Super Bowl.
- 22:28I actually thought for once that the car ads were very sparse.
- 22:32The ones that were there were just kind of like, almost felt like
- 22:34the general ads you would see on, you know, watching like Rolex or
- 22:37something that we'll talk about later.
- 22:38Like the typical weather tech ads.
- 22:40There was a Paralympics ad with Toyota, which had nothing to do with
- 22:43Toyota's other than their sponsorship.
- 22:45There was a car shield ad, which I'm, I'm still confused on how car
- 22:49shield works, but it, it involved, you know, um, It involved Ric Flair
- 22:53and iced tea, and it's all this,
- 22:55you know, is there like,
- 22:59is that that undercarriage protection that they sell you at the dealership?
- 23:03No, no, that's something else.
- 23:04CarShield is like this.
- 23:06It's like an insurance policy for repairs.
- 23:09Like you pay into this thing.
- 23:10things so that you don't have to pay, like, if your transmission blows out,
- 23:13you're paying a, a premium or whatever it might be, whatever the difference is.
- 23:17And then they take care of the rest.
- 23:19I mean, I don't know, it doesn't work for me, but it probably
- 23:22works for a lot of people.
- 23:22But that commercial was interesting.
- 23:24Cause it was like a zoom call and, you know, you got all these celebrities
- 23:27on there and then at the end, you're like, what did I just watch?
- 23:29But that's typical of most Superbowl ads.
- 23:31The other ones that were in there were the, you know, Hyundai
- 23:34Tucson ad, which just felt like a regular little dealership ad.
- 23:37It must've been like a local one or whatever.
- 23:38And I, I was not compelled in any way, but then there were three more
- 23:42that were actually interesting.
- 23:44Another Cadillac Lyric ad, but it was a riff on Edward Scissorhands, the
- 23:49movie with Johnny Depp from back in the late eighties, early nineties.
- 23:53And it was Edgar Scissorhands and it was all about like hands free driving and
- 23:57like how he finally gets to drive a car because the Cadillac will drive itself.
- 24:00And I got to the end of that and I was like, well, I get it.
- 24:05I don't know if everybody else did, but it was cute, but it really, I don't know.
- 24:09I don't know that it sold me on the Cadillac because that whole autonomous
- 24:12driving thing, as we've talked about a million times, it works.
- 24:14It doesn't work.
- 24:15It's
- 24:15false advertising.
- 24:17It's totally autonomous.
- 24:17Exactly.
- 24:18And you know, guys falling asleep on the Tesla in Canada doing 180
- 24:22kilometers or whatever it was, you know, all that kind of thing.
- 24:25I was left like, yeah, okay.
- 24:27But I didn't get it because then there was all this big deal about like, oh, the
- 24:31big deal of this commercial with The actor and I'm like, I don't understand at first.
- 24:36I didn't know who the actor was.
- 24:37I mean, Winona Ryder was in the passenger seat.
- 24:39I got that.
- 24:40Yeah.
- 24:41I didn't understand the specialty of Edgar and it's like, okay, so
- 24:46now, now I gotta go watch this.
- 24:47Now I gotta find it.
- 24:49I
- 24:49get it.
- 24:49I mean, okay.
- 24:50Was this Edward Scissorhands song?
- 24:53I don't understand.
- 24:55I
- 24:55believe it was.
- 24:56I don't know.
- 24:56I mean, for me, I thought it would have been more entertained with Johnny
- 25:00Depp, you know, surfing the roof of the lyric, like Pirates of the
- 25:03Caribbean and then crashing into a dock.
- 25:04I think that would have probably been more interesting, but whatever, you know.
- 25:07Maybe they couldn't get Johnny to, to, uh, reprise his role.
- 25:11I think that was part of the problem.
- 25:13Probably would have made more sense to just have the older Edward
- 25:16Scissorhands as it progresses with the time world, you know?
- 25:22Exactly.
- 25:22The next one that had me confused, but was very like pulling at the heartstrings
- 25:27was the Middle of Nowhere commercial with Bruce Springsteen and the Jeep Wranglers.
- 25:32It's a very strange commercial because you're not sure if it's politically
- 25:36charged or if it's or what the message is.
- 25:39It all surrounds the 80th anniversary of Jeep and they're highlighting the Wrangler
- 25:44obviously because you know that style of Jeep is what really set it all off.
- 25:47Did they have footage of a Jeep atop a mountain biking
- 25:51trail in northern California?
- 25:53Did they have that footage?
- 25:55Negative.
- 25:56But it was very slow.
- 25:58It was just very off, but in the same token, you were very
- 26:02drawn into it and very engaged.
- 26:04And then when you got to the end, there was just this slow fade, kind of
- 26:08American flag, you know, Jeep logo thing.
- 26:11And you're like, okay, well, well, that's cool.
- 26:13All right.
- 26:14I guess I'll learn something new today.
- 26:16And then three days later, the ad is completely scrapped
- 26:19because Bruce Springsteen.
- 26:21was charged with a DWI or they found out that he was charged with a DWI like
- 26:25a couple weeks before this ad came out.
- 26:28Yeah, that commercial is gone.
- 26:30Find it on YouTube.
- 26:31Well,
- 26:32that's a shame.
- 26:32That's not the first time that Chrysler has done something like this either.
- 26:37I don't know if you remember back when the Chrysler 200 came out.
- 26:41It was imported from Detroit, I think was the whole thing.
- 26:43And they had Clint Eastwood and, and all that good stuff.
- 26:46I mean, that, that, I mean, they, they try to tug at the American heartstrings
- 26:50quite a bit in their advertising campaigns, especially with Jeep.
- 26:53I mean, I figured the
- 26:54next commercial will be set in Paris and it'll have a, it'll have subtitles
- 26:58because it'll all be in French.
- 26:59So
- 27:00it's going to be directed by Woody Allen.
- 27:04There'll be a Citroen DS.
- 27:06That's like the beginning of the commercial and you're like,
- 27:07what are we watching here?
- 27:09But anyway, speaking of cars and speaking of drinking the last one,
- 27:12the one that really got me, the one I thought was the best Superbowl
- 27:15commercial of all, I was wondering
- 27:17if you were going to bring this up.
- 27:18Oh
- 27:18heck yeah, dude.
- 27:19Yeah.
- 27:20for two reasons.
- 27:21One, I think it's going to be a disgusting flavor, which is the
- 27:24new watermelon Mountain Dew, right?
- 27:28That is just two things that don't go together, and I have a
- 27:30hard time even getting it out.
- 27:32But that Geo Metro convertible driven by John Cena had me on the floor.
- 27:38floor just cracking up.
- 27:40I literally, I saw it roll out and I was immediate like,
- 27:43yeah,
- 27:44the geo has achieved celebrity status.
- 27:47Finally.
- 27:47Now it's a God awful paint job, you know, with it's watermelon colored
- 27:51on the outside and on the inside, but I just thought that was epic.
- 27:54Yeah, that was, I knew you'd like that commercial.
- 27:59When that car is sold at auction, how much are we willing to pay to get it?
- 28:04For the club,
- 28:0550 bucks.
- 28:07I'm in it for 50 bucks and has Matt, if you're listening, that is
- 28:11the ultimate Geo Metro convertible.
- 28:13It's got your name written all over it.
- 28:16God, that is disgusting looking.
- 28:18And yeah.
- 28:19Oh my God.
- 28:19It looks like Pepto.
- 28:21Pretty much.
- 28:22It's going to be pep Pepto Bismol do,
- 28:24but with effervescence, right?
- 28:25With effervescence.
- 28:27So let's get away from the super bowl commercials.
- 28:29I think we nailed that.
- 28:30There was another bit of news.
- 28:32That we need to follow up on.
- 28:34So Tanya,
- 28:35well, it was, uh, I think originally a clickbait article, but what the article
- 28:41is, is the headline is a Toyota GR Yaris.
- 28:45Yay.
- 28:46Laps faster than Nissan R35 GTR Nismo.
- 28:51Asterix only by four tenths of a second on a short flat track under wet conditions.
- 28:57Yes, in the rain.
- 28:58I was waiting for the in the rain.
- 29:00I knew it was coming.
- 29:02It was backwards on this track at night in the rain.
- 29:05And
- 29:07Michael Schumacher was driving the Yaris and an amateur was driving the Nismo.
- 29:11Yeah.
- 29:12Yeah.
- 29:12Yeah.
- 29:12Never, never.
- 29:14I don't know.
- 29:15Apparently that's some track in South Wales.
- 29:20That no one's ever heard of.
- 29:22Nothing's ever heard of.
- 29:23If you've heard of Landau circuit.
- 29:26Oh, that's in
- 29:26project cars three.
- 29:27So I have heard of that.
- 29:28Yes.
- 29:29So there you go.
- 29:30You can get on project cars and a test driver for yourself.
- 29:33Maybe they have a Yaris in project cars.
- 29:35Eric,
- 29:36I'm seeing a, a virtual rematch of this.
- 29:39Which one do you want?
- 29:40You want the GR Yaris or do you want the
- 29:42Nismo?
- 29:45Can I detune the Nismo?
- 29:46So it actually makes sense.
- 29:47I think that's part of the problem.
- 29:48You put that thing on a short track.
- 29:50It can't get out of its own way.
- 29:52Well, interestingly, the track map is an oval, basically.
- 29:56Like, I mean, it looked like it had two pretty long, well, quote, long straights.
- 30:00I don't know what the, how many miles.
- 30:03The whole track is an eighth mile.
- 30:06Maybe, but, uh, I mean, it had some like really low speed, um,
- 30:10corner kinks and things like that.
- 30:12But.
- 30:13You would've thought, I guess, that any straight would be enough for the
- 30:15600 plus horsepower or whatever the, the GTR is to outperform the little
- 30:22300 horse, somehow Odd horsepower.
- 30:24Yaris.
- 30:25I mean, the Yaris does way less, but nimbler, I I,
- 30:28they're both four wheel drive.
- 30:29I mean, you could
- 30:30run that Yaris flat out on that track.
- 30:32I mean, that's the advantage comes out the average.
- 30:34Speed, right?
- 30:35When you're trying to do something like that.
- 30:36Yeah.
- 30:37I'm not going to say I'm impressed.
- 30:38Let's redo this on a big track, you know, a VIR or a Watkins
- 30:42Glen or Laguna Seca or something.
- 30:44And I, I unfortunately hate to say that I think the Yaris is going to get crushed.
- 30:48Oh, it will no doubt.
- 30:49I mean, a hundred percent and it can't, the GTR has twice the horsepower
- 30:53and twice the torque or whatever.
- 30:55I mean, there's, there's no way it's going to compete, but I mean,
- 30:58even there's hot hatch fights.
- 31:00With the Yaris and, you know, the most recent John Cooper
- 31:04works mini and the mini beats it.
- 31:06There's no way the GTR is ever gonna win.
- 31:09Well, in the case of the new Golf R, the Yaris wouldn't get
- 31:13around it because it's so big.
- 31:15There's no space to pass it on the
- 31:17track.
- 31:17You could fit the Yaris in the back of it.
- 31:20Maybe just bump draft it to make the Golf faster.
- 31:23But here's the real question.
- 31:25Here's the 87 question.
- 31:28Which would you rather have?
- 31:29The The Yaris or the Nismo GTR?
- 31:32Yaris.
- 31:33Exactly.
- 31:34There you go.
- 31:35I would run the hell out of that thing.
- 31:38So let's, let's switch gears.
- 31:39Let's talk about some retro cars like we always do.
- 31:41So first of all, I don't know why you're calling this car retro.
- 31:46I guess the fact that it's not made anymore, even though it was only a
- 31:48couple of years ago, makes it retro.
- 31:50But that's like turning on the classic rock station and hearing Nirvana.
- 31:56It's, it's ridiculous.
- 31:57So, yes.
- 31:582020 sale numbers have come out from Chrysler, and they sold a whopping four
- 32:06brand new 2017 Dodge Vipers in 2020.
- 32:12So let that sink in a little bit.
- 32:14The car was discontinued in 2017.
- 32:17Last one rolled off the the factory line.
- 32:19These four cars, four of them have been sitting around dealer lots.
- 32:23For three years, I guess someone saw it come out in 2017.
- 32:27They were like, you know what?
- 32:28I'm going to save up for that.
- 32:29Three years later, they were able to buy it.
- 32:31It begs the question.
- 32:32How many vipers are still sitting on dealership?
- 32:35That is a fantastic question.
- 32:37I would love to find that out.
- 32:38But just so you know, year prior, they sold five.
- 32:42I know.
- 32:43Right.
- 32:44If you go around and see a brand new Dodge Viper at a dealership, buy it.
- 32:48Increase their numbers.
- 32:49Maybe they'll bring it back.
- 32:50What's even better is it sold more, Chrysler did, or Stellantis now, sold
- 32:56more Vipers than the Ram van, the Ram cargo van or whatever, which sold one.
- 33:03That's hilarious.
- 33:04So if you think about how many cars are sold in the United States on
- 33:08a yearly basis, how many cars are produced, The Ram Van sold one.
- 33:13I want to know what I want to do for GTM for BrakeFix is I want to find that
- 33:16Ram Van owner and I want to interview him 100 percent out of all the choices.
- 33:22Did you buy a
- 33:23Ram
- 33:24band?
- 33:24Cause it toes.
- 33:25Because it toes.
- 33:26Cause it may, it may toe.
- 33:28It was probably Brett.
- 33:29Brett bought it
- 33:30because there weren't any more Ford transits available
- 33:32at the dealership next door.
- 33:34But also it gets even better.
- 33:36The Viper also outsold.
- 33:38The Jeep Patriot, which sold three.
- 33:41The
- 33:44best part about that is the Jeep Patriot was discontinued a year before the Viper.
- 33:48So out there sitting on brand new Jeep Patriots.
- 33:55That's like the scrap metal guy sitting on the metal going, it's
- 33:58going to go up in value soon.
- 34:00So what I want to know what I'm going to do some investigative journalism.
- 34:04And for the next drive thru, I'm going to find out how many brand new HHRs
- 34:12I'm going to find out how many brand new Chevrolet HHRs you can go out
- 34:16and buy on dealership lots right now.
- 34:19I'll have that researched for you by the next drive thru.
- 34:22I bet there are some out there.
- 34:23Oh my goodness.
- 34:25Meanwhile, speaking of
- 34:26vipers, speaking of vipers, apparently, what do you do with
- 34:31that new viper that you buy?
- 34:32Well, you got to mod it, right?
- 34:34And if you're familiar with some of the more famous Japanese tuners and
- 34:39modders out there, I mean, we've all seen the RWB 911s and wide body cars
- 34:43that are out there and stuff like that.
- 34:44There's a gentleman in Japan that took it to a whole new level.
- 34:49He took one of those remaining vipers and turned it into a wide body dually.
- 34:55And then, to make things even more interesting, gave it a patriotic U.
- 34:59S.
- 34:59Army Jeep livery.
- 35:01Needless to say, I mean, I love the Viper.
- 35:04This is a little bit sacrilegious, in my opinion.
- 35:08And it does kind of look like a funky Miata build, after it
- 35:12was all said and done, like it was done in somebody's backyard.
- 35:15It is just, I don't know what to think.
- 35:18But, you know, hey, go Army, beat Navy.
- 35:21I usually hate stuff like this, but I have to say, I think it
- 35:24actually looks kind of cool.
- 35:26I would never do it.
- 35:27I would never drive it, but the fact that it exists, I think it's kind of cool.
- 35:31I think the guy thought he was buying a Jeep and, and the Viper
- 35:35just showed up in his driveway.
- 35:38They just look so similar.
- 35:39I mean, just from the, you know, they're built on the same platform.
- 35:42It's
- 35:43all the same
- 35:43stuff.
- 35:45You heard the motors were the same.
- 35:49Oh, would you rather have this or an HHR?
- 35:52Oh, that's
- 35:53a hard, that's a hard choice.
- 35:54Can I go back to the Yaris?
- 35:56Cause I was okay with that.
- 35:57The answer, the answer is no longer Miata.
- 35:59The answer is Gazoo Racing Yaris.
- 36:01100%.
- 36:02Well, what is time to think?
- 36:03Oh, of that hideous abomination?
- 36:06Yes, of the Viper.
- 36:08You know, I, In terms of, you know, engineering and just the
- 36:14fact that he pulled it off.
- 36:16I mean, it's interesting, but I like how the article says you could
- 36:20have done this for half the price, just starting with the Miata,
- 36:26we could have spared the Viper and killed the Miata.
- 36:29I don't know how well engineered it is.
- 36:31Cause it looks like they used Pep boy parts.
- 36:34And in Home Depot, there's probably some duct tape in there.
- 36:37There's copper piping somewhere, I'm sure.
- 36:39Hey, so the build quality is right there with Tesla though.
- 36:41So we're good.
- 36:42We're good.
- 36:42Right?
- 36:43Exactly.
- 36:43Exactly.
- 36:44Hey,
- 36:47there's no words.
- 36:50I mean,
- 36:50why, why not
- 36:52exactly because send it.
- 36:55So speaking of sending it,
- 36:56Porsche, you all know, they make cars for the longest time, tried replacing
- 37:02the nine 11 with a front engine rear wheel drive car called the nine 28.
- 37:07You all remember that car came out in 1977, you know, big
- 37:10VA, decent power, grand tour.
- 37:12They were trying to replace the nine 11, nine 11 purists.
- 37:15Poo pooed that idea, said, no way, Jose.
- 37:17So they were going to try and turn the 928 into something else.
- 37:21In 1987, they created a prototype with the help of American Sunroof Company to
- 37:26create a four door 928, which, you know, as we all know, eventually came out as
- 37:32the Panamera like 20 years later, but.
- 37:34Back in the eighties, they tried this idea.
- 37:37They gave it 330 horsepower, five liter V8.
- 37:40They handed it off to American center of company to stretch it and give
- 37:43it, you know, two little coach doors.
- 37:45That company had done work with Porsche before for the convertible nine four
- 37:49fours and things of that nature.
- 37:51And they were going to try and make a nine 28 line.
- 37:53Well, they only made one.
- 37:54Because by the time it was done, Porsche had some change at the leadership.
- 37:58Uh, the CEO at the time was ousted.
- 38:01They brought a new CEO in.
- 38:03Instead, they scrapped the car.
- 38:06They scrapped a whole bunch of other projects and everything
- 38:08to become leaner and meaner.
- 38:09And eventually they, you know, started making Porsche profitable or
- 38:13whatever, but they created this one off 928 four door, which looks okay.
- 38:19I mean, for a four door Pacer, sure.
- 38:21It's fantastic.
- 38:21Thanks.
- 38:22Yeah.
- 38:22Terrible
- 38:25. Well, it's rumored that the gentleman that designed the 9 28 back in the seventies
- 38:30took his inspiration from the Pacer.
- 38:32So I make that joke with some actual truth behind it.
- 38:35Well, you know, because they, they had that guy on top gear and he, he did.
- 38:40His little interview or whatever, they were looking at the lines on the 928.
- 38:43They had one in studio and he actually pointed that out.
- 38:46It was like, we looked at the face of for our inspiration.
- 38:49That is dead is something to be inspired by, you know,
- 38:52but so they made the one it was given to the CEO or the owner
- 38:56of American sunroof company.
- 38:58And it's sold at auction for a whopping, are you, are you sitting down?
- 39:02Are you ready for this?
- 39:0344
- 39:06Thousand dollars.
- 39:12I You thoughts?
- 39:13Terrible.
- 39:13I was
- 39:13gonna say million dollars.
- 39:15Nope.
- 39:16You would be incorrect.
- 39:17$44,000.
- 39:20You can buy a golf R or you can buy a four door.
- 39:239 28,
- 39:24somebody paid $43,999.
- 39:27Too much
- 39:30, $43,950.
- 39:33Too much.
- 39:33Exactly.
- 39:34I would've still given them 50 bucks for it.
- 39:35One, Bob, at the end of the day, one Bob, one
- 39:3750 bucks.
- 39:37But in the meantime, the, the project was scrapped.
- 39:40They made the one, Porsche directed their attention.
- 39:43To working with Mercedes on the, what is now revered 500 E, which is a
- 39:48four door sedan based on the E class.
- 39:50It's a, actually a really cool car.
- 39:52Very rare and power.
- 39:53It's a Mercedes E class with a Porsche drivetrain, supposed to be really cool.
- 39:57But even today, Porsche should just tip their hat to Mercedes and say, you guys
- 40:01know how to build a sedan and we're going to stop doing that because the Panamera.
- 40:05Oh, nevermind.
- 40:06I mean, It looks definitely the grandchild or the son of son or daughter of the 928
- 40:14prototype single production 928 wagon.
- 40:19I mean, it looks better.
- 40:21It still looks like hot trash and Porsche and Ferrari and all those
- 40:24kinds of people should never have a four door model car in their lineup
- 40:27personally, but that's a different.
- 40:28But clearly somebody at Porsche has had the picture probably of that wagon 928
- 40:34on their office wall this whole time.
- 40:36And finally was like, now's our moment, Panamera.
- 40:40And they're like, yes, we finally get to release it.
- 40:43Boo.
- 40:44Boo.
- 40:45Boo.
- 40:46Let's circle back to another retro car that you might be
- 40:49able to get your hands on.
- 40:50Yeah, so if you are into Raleigh and into Ford or into one of them
- 40:56or neither of them, I don't know.
- 40:57What's Raleigh?
- 40:58What's wrong?
- 40:59Stop it.
- 41:00Stop it.
- 41:00A UK company called Motorsport tools is building new street legal version of the
- 41:07legendary Mark II Escort that won WRC.
- 41:12What's WRC?
- 41:14Don't get me started.
- 41:15Don't get me started.
- 41:17The
- 41:19WRC championship back in 1981 and I mean, I like squarish bodied small
- 41:27cars and square with round lights is also particularly attractive
- 41:31and this checks all those boxes.
- 41:33So how much fun would it be to tool around in this car?
- 41:39This also goes back to the EU gets all the cool stuff followed by when is.
- 41:45The Capri coming back.
- 41:47Sign me up.
- 41:48And this can be yours for a mere 90, 000.
- 41:53Oh, dang.
- 41:54Would you rather spend 44, 000?
- 41:59No, no, I would not.
- 42:04HHR or 90, 000 Mark II Ford Escort.
- 42:08GR Yaris.
- 42:09I'm going back.
- 42:10Yet again, I'll spend 40 grand on the Toyota before I do that.
- 42:16Well, I guess we've wrapped up our industry news and now it's time to
- 42:19jump in to our, our cutting edge EV section known as Jolt Cola.
- 42:33So Tanya, take us away.
- 42:34Well, at long last, the Audi e tron GT has finally arrived.
- 42:42I'm salivating.
- 42:43It's like, it's like a Pavlovian thing.
- 42:46You said Audi and GT.
- 42:47That was it.
- 42:49I mean, you had me at Audi GT since I have one.
- 42:53The problem is there's e tron in the middle there.
- 42:57That's the part you didn't hear.
- 42:58Well, there's that.
- 42:59And there's the fact that the standard E tron starts at 99, 900, which is quite
- 43:06a bit far above my, uh, price range.
- 43:09I'm just cutting to the chase here.
- 43:10You can get the Prestige Edition for 107, 100, or the RS will
- 43:16set you back a mere 139, 900.
- 43:21All this could be yours and more stay tuned.
- 43:24I take issue with this car, not because it's ugly or anything like that.
- 43:27It's a, it's a fantastic looking car.
- 43:29The proportions are right.
- 43:30It's a cool Evie.
- 43:31I'm down with it.
- 43:32The price isn't even the problem.
- 43:34The bigger issue I take with it is it doesn't pay any sort of homage.
- 43:39To the cars that bore the GT badge.
- 43:41And that comes from the original Quattro lineage, right?
- 43:45The type 80 cars, the 4, 000 series, all those, they were, let's face
- 43:49it, fat Chiracos, you know, in some respects, Giugiaro designed,
- 43:53you know, all that kind of stuff.
- 43:54It doesn't carry the badge.
- 43:56Well, I could see it as the new a seven.
- 43:58I could see it as the new Audi 100 from back in the day, like the 100 four door
- 44:03and the 100 coupe and stuff like that.
- 44:05It's a weird sticking point for me, I guess, as an Audi purist, I still want
- 44:09to see the real coupe GT or the UR quattro come back, they've been teasing
- 44:14that for a while, they called it the S one a couple of times, which is also
- 44:17kind of a weird misnomer because of the rally car and things like that.
- 44:21I think it's cool.
- 44:22I would just love to see something a little bit more affordable and, you
- 44:26know, whatever name, names are one thing, but it is, it is a gorgeous car.
- 44:29I can't deny that.
- 44:31I don't know if I a hundred percent agree with you and I'd have to see it in person
- 44:34because photos are always misleading.
- 44:36Unfortunately to pay homage to those cars and they're never going to do it.
- 44:39They have to be far more square than this one is.
- 44:43And I don't see them really doing that in these modern times.
- 44:45Only
- 44:46Chrysler can do that.
- 44:47Only Chrysler can make square cars go fast.
- 44:52But if it's not, and I haven't looked into how long the car is, if it's not,
- 44:57Long like an A8 or an A7 or something like that, then I'm feeling a little
- 45:02bit more comfortable because if it's something that's short, then to me,
- 45:06that is paying a little bit more tribute to the original Quattro and
- 45:10GT coupes and cars of that nature, because the back, that slope of the rear
- 45:15glass and the trunk looks very short.
- 45:17It doesn't have some wide rear end sticking out from the back tires.
- 45:22So that is a little more 90 coupe quattro GT coupe or, or the URQ styling.
- 45:29The pictures are deceiving.
- 45:30So this thing is like 157 feet long or something.
- 45:34It's an A6, right?
- 45:35It's like a yacht.
- 45:37Then it's kind of like, all right, it's just every other Audi in their line.
- 45:41If this is kind of like a very compact short car, then it makes me feel good.
- 45:46And it is very stunning looking.
- 45:48I wish it was more affordable.
- 45:49So not to leave out the details, apparently, I think it's the, I
- 45:54guess this is the standard version.
- 45:56Mated two speed transmission setup is capable of delivering 469
- 46:00horsepower, 464 foot pounds of torque.
- 46:02Apparently there's an overboost feature that you can engage, which
- 46:05jumps those numbers to 522 and 472.
- 46:09And that gives it the ability to zoom from zero to 60 in just 3.
- 46:149 seconds.
- 46:15And it tops out apparently at 152 miles an hour.
- 46:18You know what that reminds me of?
- 46:20And it's for the IT nerds out there of a certain age.
- 46:23It reminds me of the, the PCs in the old days that had the turbo button, they
- 46:28would like, they would overclock, right?
- 46:30It's like the equivalent, like you just hit that button and you're super boost.
- 46:33You know?
- 46:34Is that, is that like the, uh, what is it?
- 46:35The, uh, ludicrous?
- 46:37Mode button or something equivalent.
- 46:40So, so the RS package adds 121 horsepower.
- 46:44So it's outputting 612 foot pounds of torques before over boost, which
- 46:50brings it up to a 637 horsepower, but still 612 foot pounds of torque,
- 46:56leaving out an important fact.
- 46:59It weighs like.
- 47:005, 100 pounds, right?
- 47:01Whoa.
- 47:02The
- 47:02RS, yes, weighs between 5, 060 to 5, 139 pounds.
- 47:07Good
- 47:07God.
- 47:08I
- 47:08think that weighs more than your Jeep, Eric.
- 47:11It does.
- 47:11As a matter of fact, my Jeep is sub 5, 000 pounds.
- 47:14So yes.
- 47:15It's two of my GT coupes.
- 47:19Yeah.
- 47:19Those cars weighed 2, 400 pounds when they were new.
- 47:24So that's why it costs so much because you're getting a lot of car.
- 47:27That's some road hugging weight right there as Ford used to say, good night.
- 47:30So you all know there was a new C8 that came out last year.
- 47:33Yeah, I don't, we don't talk about that car at all.
- 47:36No, no.
- 47:36Apparently if you, if you missed it, you know, there was a new C8,
- 47:39mid engine, rear wheel drive V8, you know, all that good stuff.
- 47:42They're releasing some new, some different versions, you know,
- 47:45to come in the coming years.
- 47:46There's a Z06 in development.
- 47:48Sadly, there is not a grand sport.
- 47:51Really?
- 47:51Good.
- 47:52There's going to be a hybrid C8 called the E Ray.
- 47:57The
- 47:58E Ray.
- 48:01Oh, I like it.
- 48:02Like the E Ray.
- 48:04Okay.
- 48:05I get it.
- 48:05The electric
- 48:06eel.
- 48:06Yeah, I see.
- 48:07I see what they did there.
- 48:08I'm
- 48:08not sure if
- 48:10I like it, but I get it.
- 48:11Don't have a lot of specs on it, but it's allegedly going to have all wheel drive.
- 48:15The hybrid system is going to mate to the stock 6.
- 48:192 liter V8.
- 48:21So, you know, fun times to be had in the C8 hybrid.
- 48:24It's probably going to be just like the Tahoe hybrid, just the big honking
- 48:28V8 with like a little itty bitty like tornado sized, you know, electric
- 48:32motor, just to say it's a hybrid.
- 48:33Can I rename it?
- 48:34I want to call it the ESX.
- 48:36Is that okay?
- 48:37Because I mean, it looks exactly like the NSX.
- 48:40So why, why not?
- 48:42Right?
- 48:43Because Acura already has.
- 48:45hybrid NSX.
- 48:46It's called the NSX.
- 48:48And speaking of that, if you guys haven't seen, and we're going to post
- 48:51the link to it, Chip Foose recently did a redesign of the C8 and love
- 48:56it or hate it in terms of his design style and whatnot, it's worth watching.
- 49:00It's sponsored by Hagerty and you're It's a time lapse recording of
- 49:04him redesigning the C8 right there in front of you in his studio.
- 49:08And I thought it was fascinating on multiple levels, but I
- 49:11would say go check it out.
- 49:13Leave your comments if you want on Instagram for us or on the show
- 49:16notes or whatever, because I'm really curious to see what people
- 49:18think about Chip's interpretation of the C8 and trying to make it.
- 49:22Pull some of the lineage of the previous Corvettes and get it to
- 49:27look a little less like an NSX or a Ferrari or some of the other cars he
- 49:31talks about, uh, in his monologue.
- 49:33So just want to throw that in there for something else to do after,
- 49:36you know, reviewing this episode.
- 49:38So what you're saying is Chevrolet did not reach out and consult with a world
- 49:42class automotive designer like Chip Foose to design their new Corvette?
- 49:46Negative, Ghost Rider.
- 49:48Not surprised.
- 49:49I will say, I think we need to switch gears back to Tanya a little
- 49:52bit here and talk about one of the slowest drag races I've ever seen.
- 49:57But there's no gears to shift in an electric car.
- 50:00So there is a video out there and it's in Italian, but there's
- 50:05English subtitles for those that do not speak the Italian language.
- 50:08It's a, I think like a eight or 10 minute video, something like it takes that
- 50:12long to do the quarter mile.
- 50:13But yeah,
- 50:14so it's a drag race of Fiat 500s through the various decades.
- 50:19So there's four Fiat 500s that are pitted up against each other.
- 50:23There's the original Fiat 500.
- 50:25There's the 1995 500 Sporting.
- 50:29There's the 2015 Fiat 500, which, it's the European version, so it's the 1.
- 50:342 liter and not the 1.
- 50:354 liter that came to the U.
- 50:37S.
- 50:38And then there's the new Fiat 500e.
- 50:42And so they put all four of these together in a couple of drag races
- 50:47and knowing that they were drag racing all these cars together, I already
- 50:51knew the outcome of the race, right?
- 50:53The original one, right?
- 50:56Yeah.
- 50:57Yeah.
- 50:58While the 500E was pushing it.
- 51:00Yeah.
- 51:01It was opposite day.
- 51:02So who finished the drag race last?
- 51:05So you're absolutely right.
- 51:06Actually, there were two knowns going into this.
- 51:09One, that the original 500 was going to lose, and that the
- 51:13electric 500 was going to win.
- 51:15Those two were quite obvious.
- 51:17So, the video, you know, confirms all this.
- 51:20However, what I found far more fascinating, I mean, the whole thing was
- 51:23fascinating, but far more fascinating was the race going on between the
- 51:281995 Cinquecento Sporting, the 500 Sporting, and the 2015 Fiat 500.
- 51:36I mean, the Fiat 500, spoiler alert, it still won, but it
- 51:41was a close fricking race.
- 51:43And the 1.
- 51:442 liter only has 68 horsepower and it weighs 1, 900 pounds.
- 51:49The 500 Sporting has 54 horsepower.
- 51:52It does weigh less.
- 51:53It weighs 1, 620, so it's got about 300 pounds on it.
- 51:57But, I mean, it kept up.
- 51:59So the best part of that is if you've never seen those early
- 52:03nineties Chin Santos, it's a shopping cart with a roof on it.
- 52:08Okay.
- 52:08That's exactly the design.
- 52:10There's nothing to it.
- 52:11It is a box with four wheels.
- 52:14I have had the displeasure of driving my grandfather's base version of
- 52:19that, which was an alto Bianchi y 10.
- 52:21It's an, it's an a thousand cc version of that car.
- 52:25Brad would take up the entirety of the interior, right?
- 52:28Versus two of us would be shoulder to shoulder and we'd be squeezed
- 52:31in this little shopping cart.
- 52:33It's a car that you can't drive it not at 9, 000 RPM.
- 52:38And then you're still rowing the gears to make it move because it's like
- 52:41a lawnmower engine and that thing.
- 52:43So when I saw that race, I mean, I was cheering on that little car off the line.
- 52:48I mean, he, he jumped.
- 52:49I was like, Dang, this is going to be really cool.
- 52:52And then it was like, by the time he hit fifth gear, it was over
- 52:55that, that time he was going slower.
- 52:59It had to launch on the 20, it
- 53:01was close.
- 53:03Well, all I've got to say is the lack of a barth in this article.
- 53:08Yeah, I would have liked to have seen the MultiAir in there just to
- 53:13mix it up and see what it would do.
- 53:14I bet it's a lot closer to the 500E in terms of performance, which
- 53:19isn't necessarily a bad thing.
- 53:20It is more powerful.
- 53:21It's making closer to like 200 horse or whatever that thing makes, so.
- 53:25So, 500 Abarth or Gazoo Racing Yaris?
- 53:28I
- 53:30don't know.
- 53:32Cause Tanya's kind of would be an Italian purist, I would think.
- 53:35So I w I would have picked her to choose the Fiat.
- 53:37Yeah, that's, that's tough.
- 53:39I think, I don't know.
- 53:40I really want to do that.
- 53:41Yours.
- 53:42I, if I have to, okay.
- 53:43If I have to make a compromise, I would take the Punto SS, which is slightly
- 53:48bigger, it's a proper hatchback and everything, and it makes more power than
- 53:52the 500, So that would be more in line with the GR yards if I had to go Fiat,
- 53:57but that's not a card that they sell here.
- 53:59So,
- 53:59well, it's also funny in the video was after they were done doing their, the
- 54:03couple of drag pulls that they did.
- 54:04And then he talked about how the, the finishing.
- 54:09Was like opposite to the sound.
- 54:12Yeah.
- 54:14The sound, uh, performance was like the opposite order.
- 54:18And so then they played like the in car like pull sounds and it was like
- 54:22the worst sounding of course was the EV because it sounds like nothing.
- 54:26Whistling nothing.
- 54:27They did.
- 54:27They didn't pump
- 54:28in any artificial exhaust.
- 54:30No, they didn't.
- 54:32But then, I mean, they ranked it as like the loudest was the original 500 decibels.
- 54:37I don't think it was the best sounding.
- 54:38Actually.
- 54:38I think the sporting was the best sounding as it was railing through the gears.
- 54:42It's
- 54:42very throat, very throaty for a 1200, but that's, but then again, it's also
- 54:46doing like 8, 500 RPM to get it to move.
- 54:50I mean, it's not,
- 54:51they didn't do any emissions testing either.
- 54:55No.
- 54:57That's a fun little video.
- 54:58If you're interested in those, those type of cars, check it out.
- 55:01Let's talk Blue Oval.
- 55:02So then, of course, there's all the buzz lately, and there's more news coming
- 55:07out, and they're finally here, and some of them, you know, a small amount are
- 55:10in dealerships already, and I'm sure there's people, you know, like, very
- 55:15excited to get the ones they pre ordered.
- 55:17What are we talking about?
- 55:18The Mustang Mach E.
- 55:21So Ford,
- 55:22strike that.
- 55:22We don't call it the Mustang anymore.
- 55:24This is thee.
- 55:26Yes.
- 55:27Well that was for different reasons.
- 55:30That's pretty smart.
- 55:31And but we won't, we won't get into that.
- 55:33But yes, it is still technically, I believe the Mustang Mach E but for all
- 55:37intents and purposes, people just refer to it as, as the Mki 'cause it is.
- 55:41It's aesthetically very different than what people are accustomed to
- 55:45with the historical, iconic pony card.
- 55:49It's very similar to what SRT4 owners are doing with their neons.
- 55:55Yeah, I will start T4 is not the neon SRT for two.
- 56:00Neon SRT4 purists.
- 56:01It's just the SRT4.
- 56:03They don't want to be linked to the Neon.
- 56:05Where this, people don't want to link whatever this thing is to the Mustang.
- 56:10So, and I will make a suggestion.
- 56:12So Ford, if you're listening, brilliant campaign to try to go get that Jeep off
- 56:16the side of that cliff in California.
- 56:18Let's use that person to rename this car, the Puma.
- 56:22Let's carry that name over.
- 56:24From Europe or maybe the Cougar or something else,
- 56:27differentiate it from the Mustang.
- 56:29I think it should be the Eagle High, the Eagle Eye Hammer Thrust.
- 56:32Uh, just let's not call it the CA because that would not work in New
- 56:36Jersey, New York, or Massachusetts.
- 56:38I
- 56:39mean, they can go, if they want to keep with horses, they
- 56:41can just go with stallions.
- 56:43We can't call it the Pinto because we know how that's going to end.
- 56:46Well, it's, it's more like a Clydesdale.
- 56:51So at any rate, as.
- 56:53This thing is actually real now, you know, um, and with all EVs, the whole
- 56:58range saga is a big thing and people, you know, everything's always compared
- 57:04against Tesla because they were basically the first, so they're kind of the
- 57:06benchmark, how does it compare, da da da, and the range figures are out for now.
- 57:11I don't think they're, not all the variants of the Mach E, I think, are out.
- 57:15Fully published because the California trim and there's one other trim.
- 57:20I can't remember what it is right now.
- 57:21They, I don't think they finalize what the range numbers are.
- 57:24And I think the California should have the highest mileage range, but
- 57:28the standard range all wheel drive is clocking in right now at 211 miles.
- 57:33The standard range are real will drive.
- 57:36230, the extended range, all wheel drive 270, and the extended range
- 57:41rear wheel drive is 300 miles.
- 57:44So those are EPA ratings.
- 57:46If you take the extended range, our wheel drive, the 300 miles is short
- 57:51of what the Tesla model Y can do by, I think like 26 miles or something like
- 57:57that, but that's not even fair because the Tesla model Y is all wheel drive.
- 58:02And now we're comparing real world drive with all wheel drive.
- 58:05If you compare the all wheel drive model, it's 270 versus
- 58:08a 326, so it's falling short.
- 58:11What I want to know is how does this, how do they change in the
- 58:14frozen tundra of Texas right now?
- 58:16Some things you see when you're reading about the battery life and all that is,
- 58:19it's not necessarily The cold itself that is detrimental to the battery, which
- 58:24I don't know that I fully agree with some of those arguments because I think
- 58:27there's been proof that batteries are impacted by the cold weather, but I don't
- 58:33know the significance of that impact.
- 58:35A lot of what happens in the cold weather is because of people are cold.
- 58:39And so they turn the heat on.
- 58:40And unfortunately in an electric car, some of the battery power has
- 58:44to be diverted to heat the inside of the car in a gasoline or an ice.
- 58:50Vehicle, the heat's a by product of the combustion of the engine.
- 58:53And so it's free, basically, in a way it's kind of free energy, right?
- 58:57Like the, the fact that your car is running, it's creating heat.
- 59:00That heat is pushed into the cabin and whatnot, very simplistically, right?
- 59:05And that's what gives you the warmth.
- 59:06But in an electric car, you have to use precious battery resources, if you will.
- 59:11So in the meantime, you're driving at night, it's cold.
- 59:13You got the heat on, you got your headlights on, you got
- 59:16the radio blasting, the wipers.
- 59:18You probably got your seat warmers on, and the steering wheel warmer,
- 59:21and you got the infotainment system going, and you know, God knows what
- 59:25else, that all is battery, right?
- 59:28Whereas at least in an ICE car, the heat component is separate, it's not draining
- 59:33the battery like all the other things.
- 59:35Batteries put off heat, they overheat.
- 59:38I mean, they can overheat and everything.
- 59:39Isn't there a way, there's no way to harness that somehow.
- 59:43There is some facet of liquid cooling going on.
- 59:47I just don't know what those radiators and that heat exchange level is like.
- 59:50I think at best, even if you put a blower across it, like a standard
- 59:54heater core, it's going to be tepid.
- 59:56It's not going to be hot.
- 59:57Because the water in an ice engine, whether it be gas or
- 1:00:00diesel, it's close to boiling.
- 1:00:02So it's very easy to produce heat at any level, right?
- 1:00:05And do all that kind of stuff.
- 1:00:07I don't think the batteries are probably generating enough
- 1:00:09heat at all to do anything.
- 1:00:11They generate enough heat to catch fire.
- 1:00:13Because if it did produce that much heat, I think bad things would be happening.
- 1:00:18You'd definitely be warm at that point.
- 1:00:20So back to the Mach E range numbers.
- 1:00:22So, yes.
- 1:00:23They don't look horrible.
- 1:00:24They're not, you know, a hundred mile range or anything crazy like that.
- 1:00:27But the more interesting thing is there's a separate article that's recently
- 1:00:30come out that's saying that these EPA rating numbers are understated.
- 1:00:34So the Mach E performs better than what the EPA is saying.
- 1:00:38So apparently Edmunds did their own and they do their own independent.
- 1:00:42Studies and surveys and whatnot, and what they found when they tested the
- 1:00:46all wheel drive extended range version is that it didn't get 270 miles.
- 1:00:51It got 304 miles on a single battery charge.
- 1:00:55So now the all wheel drive is knocking on the door of its
- 1:00:58true competitor, the model Y.
- 1:01:00But kind of with that logic, if the rear wheel drive extended
- 1:01:04range is also understated, then could it see closer to 330 miles?
- 1:01:09It could, at the very least, meet But then even possibly slightly
- 1:01:14beat what the model Y is doing.
- 1:01:16So that's pretty exciting.
- 1:01:17And another note in the article to quote them directly is that interestingly
- 1:01:21Edmonds notes that every Tesla model it tested failed to deliver
- 1:01:25the numbers estimated by the EPA.
- 1:01:27So there's a big, a history there where.
- 1:01:29And I think I've seen this in different articles to where Tesla numbers are
- 1:01:33overstated, and they don't actually perform to what the number is versus
- 1:01:37even the TACAN is another good example where everyone was in outrage over
- 1:01:41like the abysmal miles that it gave.
- 1:01:43And then when it was actually tested in the real world by
- 1:01:46somebody else, not the EPA.
- 1:01:48Did like twice as good twice as well and twice as far or whatever, right?
- 1:01:52That's a
- 1:01:52long standing VAG card that they play.
- 1:01:55They did that a lot in the early 2000s with like the S4s where
- 1:01:58they understated the horsepower.
- 1:02:00And then when people actually tested them, they were making 30 more
- 1:02:03horsepower than what was on paper.
- 1:02:04I think from the VAG family, it's one of these like cautious.
- 1:02:08Moves to say, well, we're guaranteed.
- 1:02:11If we build it, we're always going to be able to attain this number, but if you're
- 1:02:15able to get 20 percent over good for you, but we're guaranteeing this number.
- 1:02:20Right.
- 1:02:20And they can hold to that.
- 1:02:21And then they're not liable to say, well, you know, you said it
- 1:02:24was two 40 and it's really two 20.
- 1:02:26They'd rather be like, it's two 40.
- 1:02:27And in real life, it does two 80, you know, or whatever.
- 1:02:30And then they just use a
- 1:02:31cheat device by Bosch.
- 1:02:32If they're not getting the numbers.
- 1:02:33Sick
- 1:02:34burn.
- 1:02:36And that's fine.
- 1:02:36I get there's, there's reasons for doing that or whatnot.
- 1:02:39I think the importance or significance of this is that people shouldn't get too
- 1:02:43excited yet over the range numbers until these cars are out there and people are,
- 1:02:49they're being tested more and whatnot.
- 1:02:52And then let, let's see really how it chips fall.
- 1:02:54Right.
- 1:02:54Because everything is always Well.
- 1:02:56The Tesla.
- 1:02:56The Tesla, the Tesla, the Tesla.
- 1:02:58Well give these guys a chance here to breathe and get out on the road
- 1:03:02and show us what we can really do.
- 1:03:03And, and you know what?
- 1:03:04If they're matching the Tesla numbers Ah
- 1:03:07yeah.
- 1:03:08And the price point is right.
- 1:03:09And it's price point
- 1:03:10is right.
- 1:03:10And quite honestly, I'm not the price point biggest Ford fan, but.
- 1:03:15The Mach E, I mean, hands down, is more attractive than the Teslas in my opinion,
- 1:03:19but that's, you know, to each their own.
- 1:03:21I saw it at the DC Auto Show last year.
- 1:03:23I think it's a gorgeous car.
- 1:03:25I think Ford's going in the right direction.
- 1:03:26I think they might struggle with the Blue Oval loyals, right, that are used
- 1:03:30to their Mustangs and all the trucks and everything, but I think there's
- 1:03:33going to be a contingent of those that are going to sign up and say, Hey,
- 1:03:36I'm not interested in leaving Ford.
- 1:03:37I want to stay with you.
- 1:03:38Now you have something that's comparable to the Tesla.
- 1:03:41And then once you start seeing them on the road, that's usually the cascade effect.
- 1:03:44You just see more and more and more of them.
- 1:03:46They made the right move with the Bronco.
- 1:03:48I'm now starting to see them on the road and that was very popular.
- 1:03:51It was very well received.
- 1:03:52And I think the Mach E, if they position it correctly and they market
- 1:03:56it right, it's going to take off.
- 1:03:57And I'm, I'm, I'm applauding Ford for that.
- 1:04:00Ford at the moment.
- 1:04:01The opportunity for more marketing gold is just like fire hose down their face.
- 1:04:06I think right now, because if you look at the recent events that have
- 1:04:09happened across the state of Texas with the winter storm that came
- 1:04:13through in February of 2021, if you're listening to this later and you don't
- 1:04:17know what, what month that happened, Ford called up a bunch of dealers,
- 1:04:21apparently down throughout Texas and said, Hey, your F 150 hybrids electrics
- 1:04:26that you've got sitting on the lot.
- 1:04:27Send them out to people so they can use them as generators to power their home.
- 1:04:33Ford built tough Ford, America, Ford, helping for getting, yeah.
- 1:04:37And we, and
- 1:04:38we talked about that.
- 1:04:39We're like, who's ever going to use that?
- 1:04:41Why would they ever use that?
- 1:04:42And now we have this application for it, which makes total sense.
- 1:04:45So
- 1:04:46people, there's a real world
- 1:04:50application and circumstance that happened where people might,
- 1:04:54people that were against Ford EVs.
- 1:04:56That are the diehard, I want my gas, diesel, guzzling, whatever.
- 1:05:00They might go, oh wait, wait a second, maybe electric
- 1:05:03planning ain't all that bad.
- 1:05:05I don't know.
- 1:05:05We'll see what happens.
- 1:05:06Maybe this will cause an uptick in sales for Ford.
- 1:05:11On the other side of the pond, while Stellantis is being born out of,
- 1:05:15you know, like Lord of the Rings.
- 1:05:16Hahaha.
- 1:05:19Hahaha.
- 1:05:19The other large French contingent that owns several Japanese companies and
- 1:05:24many other, you know, corporations down the line known to many of us as
- 1:05:28Renault has put out a rendering of what a potential R5 EV would look like.
- 1:05:36Now there's really no specs on this car.
- 1:05:38It's really an artist rendering of the classic R5 turbo two rally car.
- 1:05:43And I will say when you Yeah, it's fantastic.
- 1:05:47So when you guys see the pictures on the follow on article to this episode, you
- 1:05:51can take a look at it for yourselves.
- 1:05:52If you haven't already seen it, it's done in the elf livery, right?
- 1:05:56Which is the French petroleum company from way back in the eighties.
- 1:05:59It's a black, yellow, and white combination.
- 1:06:02I think the car looks fantastic.
- 1:06:03I like the squareness of it.
- 1:06:05I think the R5 really lends itself to an EV and I'm excited to see this come out.
- 1:06:10And I think good on Renault, right?
- 1:06:12We got the new Nissan 400 coming out.
- 1:06:15We got all these other cars.
- 1:06:16I think this is right up their alley and they could make a move to kind of
- 1:06:21come against the mega muscle machine.
- 1:06:24That's going to be Stellantis with, with SRT and all these other things.
- 1:06:26So I think this is really cool to take them on head on, but also
- 1:06:30take it from an EV perspective.
- 1:06:31Meanwhile, Hyundai.
- 1:06:33Has decided to put out something known as the Ionic version five or Ionic five.
- 1:06:38It's just another EV kind of hot hatch looking thing.
- 1:06:42I guess we're expected to see this on the shores.
- 1:06:44The Ionic was here for a while in a previous version, but it,
- 1:06:49but it, it wasn't very popular.
- 1:06:50You don't see too many on the roads.
- 1:06:52Every once in a while I see one and at afar, you're like, is that
- 1:06:54a, like a Elantra or something?
- 1:06:56Yeah.
- 1:06:56Prius.
- 1:06:57You're like, what is that?
- 1:06:58And then you, you see the badge and you're like, Huh?
- 1:07:00It's kind of like the Scion IQ that came out, you know, all
- 1:07:03those cars, you're like, what, what are we talking about here?
- 1:07:05But they came out with a new version.
- 1:07:07Again, they're trying to break into that smaller compact space with
- 1:07:10EVs, the hot hatch EV friendly, you know, things of that nature.
- 1:07:14So I'm curious to see where that goes and what it finally looks like outside
- 1:07:18of the, you know, the spy photos and things that they've put into the marketing
- 1:07:21photos that they've put out of the car.
- 1:07:22Well, the renderings are very different than what I would
- 1:07:25expect from a Hyundai to look
- 1:07:28correct.
- 1:07:29that have come out right Sonata and the Elantra an know about you guys.
- 1:07:34I'm those weird headlights th like reverse check marks and there's a lot of led I
- 1:07:40thought this car you co In comparison to what they're putting out right now.
- 1:07:47But I think it's more in line with the E Golf and the ID4 and the
- 1:07:52Renault and all these things that are being positioned right now.
- 1:07:55So I think it's better looking than some of the stuff that
- 1:07:57they're, they're currently pushing.
- 1:07:59If the photo of its front is going to be anything true to how it actually
- 1:08:04looks, it, it kind of looks like a BMW because the way they have the headlights.
- 1:08:08They've got essentially two on each side that are, they're not full circles, but
- 1:08:12they're, they're half squares actually.
- 1:08:14Yeah.
- 1:08:14Reminiscent of like the old E30s and stuff.
- 1:08:16Yeah, exactly.
- 1:08:17So interesting.
- 1:08:19And then we won't talk about BMW, but I will say this because it's not EV related.
- 1:08:24Those new Star Trek looking front ends that the BMWs have, we could have an
- 1:08:29entire episode on those by themselves.
- 1:08:31So I'm just going to leave them there.
- 1:08:33Love it or hate it.
- 1:08:33Okay.
- 1:08:34I have heard though that it is on purpose to get people's knee jerk reaction
- 1:08:39to really pay attention to BMW, these new, just gaping open fish mouths that
- 1:08:45they're putting on the front of the cars.
- 1:08:46It's not the first time they've done that either.
- 1:08:48They did that back in, I guess, 2004 or five with the seven series.
- 1:08:52Yeah.
- 1:08:52The
- 1:08:52bagel BMWs.
- 1:08:54Yeah.
- 1:08:54Yeah.
- 1:08:55So Brad, I see that another luxury brand is coming to the EV market.
- 1:08:59Yep.
- 1:09:00Rolls Royce, Rolls Royce has come to the EV market with
- 1:09:03the Vision Next 100 concept.
- 1:09:06And it looks to me like something out of the thirties, the old gangsta cars.
- 1:09:12Fenders that aren't part of the car, but are part of the car and luggage storage
- 1:09:16system right behind the, the wheel.
- 1:09:18And
- 1:09:19it looks like something out of Batman, the animated series, like when they
- 1:09:22would exaggerate those old gangster cars.
- 1:09:24Then when I saw the video for it and stuff, I was just like,
- 1:09:26how does this thing even turn?
- 1:09:28Like, it doesn't make a lot of sense.
- 1:09:30It definitely gets your attention.
- 1:09:31There's no metrics on it that I could find, but it's definitely
- 1:09:35a stunner if you're into that super high end luxury vehicle.
- 1:09:38So kind of cool to see, you know, a brand like Rolls Royce jumping
- 1:09:42in there and not doing what they did in the eighties and nineties.
- 1:09:46Where they just pretty much cranked out the same stuff
- 1:09:48they had been making forever.
- 1:09:50So it's good to see them taking a step into this world and kind of
- 1:09:53joining the ranks with everybody else.
- 1:09:55This was foretold, right?
- 1:09:56We saw this, we talked about this on several other episodes at this part,
- 1:10:00this segment of the show, where it's like, it's only going to be a matter
- 1:10:02of time before the euros and everybody else kind of get into this scene and
- 1:10:07start to take on, you know, Tesla and everybody else in this Evie world.
- 1:10:11So again, curious to see what happens.
- 1:10:13It looks to me like it's the next logical progression for this car
- 1:10:18would be the wheels mechanically fold in under the car and it takes flight
- 1:10:24like the
- 1:10:25DeLorean.
- 1:10:27It's already got a Rolls Royce motor, you know, Rolls Royce is
- 1:10:30known for their aviation motors.
- 1:10:32Here we go.
- 1:10:33This is the next logical step for flying vehicles.
- 1:10:36So I guess we would be remiss as Tanya likes to say if we didn't
- 1:10:40talk about the Tesla one more time.
- 1:10:43Well,
- 1:10:45I don't think this is the last time, but it's literally
- 1:10:48not the last time.
- 1:10:50I mean, I don't want to belabor this point too much.
- 1:10:52I mean, it's just, you know, a report out of essentially, you know, consumer
- 1:10:56reports, reliability survey to do the reliability surveys all the time.
- 1:11:00That's a gold standard for.
- 1:11:02Reporting on that kind of information.
- 1:11:04And you know, not shockingly, the Teslas don't do well in
- 1:11:10consumer reports for liability.
- 1:11:11So pretty much overall, they sit at second from the bottom of a 26 brand ranking.
- 1:11:18That's not so great
- 1:11:19is GM underneath them.
- 1:11:21You know what?
- 1:11:22I can't find the list.
- 1:11:23I don't remember who was at the bottom now, who's at the very, very bottom,
- 1:11:26but nonetheless, I mean, we all have heard the stories, whether it be the,
- 1:11:30the home depot parts and all that, but, uh, the misaligned body panels and
- 1:11:37suspension issues and, you know, the in car electronic issues and all that.
- 1:11:42And then to a minor scale, which is considered, I think, in the
- 1:11:45reliability Ports is like things like the finish of the paint being
- 1:11:49pretty abhorrent and things like that.
- 1:11:51I believe all these different categories are weighted.
- 1:11:53So I don't think the paint category is, you know, putting
- 1:11:56too much on the liability, but still it's measured in there.
- 1:11:59So,
- 1:11:59But we've seen over the last winter months here, Tesla stock continues to climb.
- 1:12:06Yeah.
- 1:12:06And, you know, Oh, we're making so much money and all this.
- 1:12:10stuff and I was really confused back in when the years just melt together now
- 1:12:19in the before times
- 1:12:22in 2020 with all the COVID not that we're out of COVID when we were deeper
- 1:12:27in the COVID last year in 2020 you know there were reports that the
- 1:12:30earnings were You know, the best ever, even though the factory in
- 1:12:33California was shut down and all this stuff, and they didn't sell any cars.
- 1:12:37And I'm like, how the hell are you making money if you're not selling
- 1:12:39cars and the factory's closed?
- 1:12:41I'm not the best with, you know, those kind of finance things, but,
- 1:12:46um, something didn't add up for me.
- 1:12:48So I found it interesting when there was an article.
- 1:12:51Yeah, it's a little bit of a grabber title, if you will, you
- 1:12:54know, Tesla's dirty little secret.
- 1:12:56It's net profit doesn't come from selling cars.
- 1:12:59But needless to say, I mean, the grabbing this work because I wanted
- 1:13:01to read what they were talking about.
- 1:13:03I hadn't put it together before that they are selling carbon credits.
- 1:13:08So they're making all their money, not from selling their vehicles,
- 1:13:12but from the fact that they have an abundance of carbon credit and
- 1:13:16they're selling that to other people.
- 1:13:18So apparently they brought in 3.
- 1:13:213 billion over the last five years, which apparently 1.
- 1:13:266 of which Was just in 2020 alone.
- 1:13:29Whereas apparently the, I think their car sales was something
- 1:13:33like seven or 21 million.
- 1:13:35So without all that carbon credit selling that they're doing, they
- 1:13:39would actually would add a income loss for people don't know what that is.
- 1:13:42Essentially, you know, the whole admissions and carbon and all that.
- 1:13:46There's, there's a whole cap and trade system.
- 1:13:48So basically different areas, different regions, different
- 1:13:50companies, businesses, whatever.
- 1:13:52You're capped on how much you can, you know, invest.
- 1:13:53Emits and pollutes, and then you either obviously need to, if you're going to
- 1:13:58exceed your threshold, you either need to invest and get green, essentially
- 1:14:04lower your carbon emissions in whatever form that can be, or you can buy
- 1:14:09carbon credit because it's this kind of whole market exchange that you can do.
- 1:14:14And so you can buy credits from somebody else in lieu of,
- 1:14:17so, so essentially you can.
- 1:14:18You can over emit your threshold, but you bought the carbon credits
- 1:14:22to do a whole offset thing.
- 1:14:24It's a whole thing that exists.
- 1:14:25And so apparently they're making a ton of money being able to do
- 1:14:28that because they're a fully trick based company and they've got a ton.
- 1:14:33They're sitting on a ton of carbon credits apparently.
- 1:14:35So there you go.
- 1:14:36Fun fact.
- 1:14:36It ain't because they're selling a million Teslas.
- 1:14:39They might not be selling a million Tesla threes either because there's
- 1:14:43a shortage On chips globally.
- 1:14:46So those are all the silicon microchips and everything to go into these new
- 1:14:50cars and computers and everything.
- 1:14:51As we move further and further into the EV world, we've become more and
- 1:14:55more reliant on all these computers and boards and chips and all these stuff.
- 1:15:00And apparently there is a global shortage.
- 1:15:02This has also extended the production lines and production timelines of a
- 1:15:07bunch of different auto manufacturers.
- 1:15:09One of those specifically GM.
- 1:15:11So again, you know, they're teasing us with the Super Bowl ads and the lyric
- 1:15:14and the Hummer and all this stuff.
- 1:15:15Stuff and they can't even build the cars yet because there are just aren't enough
- 1:15:19chips out there to make it all happen.
- 1:15:21So, you know, that is a major drawback.
- 1:15:23I mean, outside of places like Texas that weren't prepared for the snow and
- 1:15:28you won't be able to charge your EV, they can't even build them right now.
- 1:15:31So, you know, we'll see how that changes.
- 1:15:33You know, obviously companies are going to have to tool up quickly to be able
- 1:15:36to, to produce more and more chips as we become more and more dependent on
- 1:15:40computerized systems in the future.
- 1:15:41Here's another issue that cropped up also.
- 1:15:44So there's two main battery manufacturers for the lithium
- 1:15:47ion batteries that are in Korea.
- 1:15:49There's SK and there's LG, basically.
- 1:15:51And, uh, SK apparently they're having some sort of legal issue.
- 1:15:56So there's some sort of misappropriation of trade secrets on battery technology.
- 1:16:00So, so there's some big thing between SK and LG.
- 1:16:03what's happened now is that SK, they had contracts with Ford and Volkswagen
- 1:16:08for sending over lithium ion batteries.
- 1:16:10They're allowed to continue that for the next four years, but basically
- 1:16:13they can't export out the lithium ion batteries to anybody else at the moment.
- 1:16:17So.
- 1:16:18There is another issue because now if somebody like LG can't
- 1:16:22take up all that slack or another company doesn't come along, where
- 1:16:25the battery is coming from then.
- 1:16:26So if they can get their act together and resolve whatever their issues
- 1:16:29are and prove this, that, and the other, then you know, they can go
- 1:16:33back to doing business, but we'll see how, how this impacts anything.
- 1:16:37And much like Tesla is selling credits, who's to say.
- 1:16:40That, uh, SK can't sell them to Ford or Volkswagen and then Ford or
- 1:16:45Volkswagen turn around and resell them once they're out of Korea.
- 1:16:49I mean, that's a whole logistics supply chain thing that right.
- 1:16:52Well above our pay grades, but yeah, you're right.
- 1:16:54I mean, there's all sorts of things involved there from the business
- 1:16:56perspective, but even those batteries.
- 1:16:59For a lot of people that don't know, I've done some research myself on like
- 1:17:02the anti gravity batteries and stuff for the race cars, there's boards
- 1:17:06and chips inside those batteries to do like automatic tending and jump
- 1:17:10starting and a lot of other stuff.
- 1:17:11So even those battery manufacturers are kind of being held to what's the
- 1:17:15supply chain like for those chips.
- 1:17:17I think it's really cool that those, you know, batteries are becoming
- 1:17:20that sophisticated, super light.
- 1:17:23Obviously they weigh almost next to nothing.
- 1:17:24Uh, when you're doing, you know, a replacement.
- 1:17:27Again, we'll see what happens this year.
- 1:17:29And maybe it's going to be like the Viper.
- 1:17:31How many EVs are sold for, you know, we are a car enthusiast
- 1:17:36and motor sport podcast.
- 1:17:38I guess it's time for us to talk about motor sports.
- 1:17:41And so let's transition and go behind the wall.
- 1:17:44For some motor sports news.
- 1:17:45So right up front, you know, at the top of the segment here, most people
- 1:17:49in our community are interested in circuit racing, club racing,
- 1:17:53HPDEs and things of that nature.
- 1:17:55At the end of the year, obviously month by month, we could tell you what was
- 1:17:58left on the calendar, which tracks were, you know, popular, you know,
- 1:18:01looking at the big ones like, you know, the Glenn and VIR and stuff like that.
- 1:18:04Now that we're at the top of the season, which pretty much kicks off in our area
- 1:18:08in the mid Atlantic, right around the March timeframe, obviously places that
- 1:18:11are Well, not Texas, but places like Florida have already started early in
- 1:18:15January, you know, returning to the track, I'm not going to list any events.
- 1:18:19I just want to give a big shout out to Dave Peters and the crew over at HPDE
- 1:18:23Junkie, because they have what seems to be like well over a thousand events already
- 1:18:29in the system that you can go and search by each track, To figure out who's there.
- 1:18:34And those events aren't just for the next couple of months.
- 1:18:36They're for the entire track season.
- 1:18:39So if you're looking for something to do, once the weather breaks,
- 1:18:42you know, check out HPD junkie.
- 1:18:44com for all the latest information on, you know, who's where and when, and why
- 1:18:48one of the biggest things that happens in the winter every year, and it's
- 1:18:51been a tradition for all of us here.
- 1:18:52Here at GTM is to get together and watch Rolex like we do in
- 1:18:56the summertime with Le Mans.
- 1:18:58So this year was a little different, you know, we didn't have the
- 1:19:00typical viewing party, Brad's house or somebody else's house.
- 1:19:03We did it virtually this year.
- 1:19:05So we had a 24 hour session going where people could jump in and jump out, comment
- 1:19:10on the race, get together and all that.
- 1:19:12And it worked out really, really well.
- 1:19:13It was a lot of fun.
- 1:19:14In the end, it was probably more fun than the race itself.
- 1:19:17Wouldn't you say Brad?
- 1:19:18Yeah, the race was pretty boring.
- 1:19:22It was like the year when we went to the actual race.
- 1:19:25I don't know.
- 1:19:25I don't have much to say about the race.
- 1:19:27It
- 1:19:27just, there just wasn't much luster to it at all.
- 1:19:30And it was weird because there were people there and we had some guys on
- 1:19:33the ground who jumped in on our session and were telling us, you know, we could
- 1:19:36hear the PA system in the background and the cars going by, which made it super
- 1:19:40exciting, but it just seemed a little bit.
- 1:19:43Meh, like that's the best way I can describe it.
- 1:19:46I think it's also on the precipice of a lot of changes that are coming
- 1:19:51to IMSA, that are coming to WEC, that are coming to the Daytona prototype,
- 1:19:55you know, series and things like that.
- 1:19:57They're changing the rules.
- 1:19:58They're changing the classing for the next couple of years.
- 1:20:00You know, by the time we hit 2023, Le Mans, you're going to see a lot of
- 1:20:04crossover and blending of these classes.
- 1:20:07And it started to surface a lot of articles about the future of GT racing.
- 1:20:13At Lamont's and at IMSA.
- 1:20:15Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:20:16I personally love GT racing.
- 1:20:20There's nothing more exciting to me than seeing cars that you see on the street.
- 1:20:25Slap a bunch of stickers on them.
- 1:20:26Now, I know they're not the exact same cars, but you get the
- 1:20:28point they're out there on track.
- 1:20:31It gives the every man the sense that, hey, I can go do that with
- 1:20:34my car, which leads into HBD and autocross all that other fun stuff.
- 1:20:39I'm not a fan of open wheel too much.
- 1:20:41I mean, I watch it, but I would much prefer GT racing to see it go away
- 1:20:46would be a huge disappointment for.
- 1:20:48Yeah.
- 1:20:49And I think that the restructuring is going to make things interesting, right?
- 1:20:52They're talking about bringing TCR and GT4 up into a new kind of homologated
- 1:20:57GT3 class, but then that also means they're going to do away with GTAM.
- 1:21:02So all those gentlemen drivers we talked about early on in season one, in that
- 1:21:05episode, that might not be a thing anymore, but then you're also seeing
- 1:21:09the manufacturers pulling out of GTLM.
- 1:21:11I mean, I thought GTLM this year was.
- 1:21:13I hate to say kind of pathetic.
- 1:21:14It was Corvettes race to lose.
- 1:21:17They really didn't have any competition.
- 1:21:19Even the privateer Porsches and stuff.
- 1:21:20It was like, eh, I really would like to see that bolstered back up.
- 1:21:24I'd like to see more production sports cars in there.
- 1:21:26I, you know, Rolex was the sunset of the 488 Ferrari.
- 1:21:30So what's Ferrari going to come to the table with, if at all, you know, there
- 1:21:33was, yeah, there was a couple of Lambos in there, so, you know, Volkswagen's
- 1:21:37doing their thing or Audi or whatever.
- 1:21:39What I don't want to see though, is.
- 1:21:41And we know that DPI is a weird in between of LMP1 and P2.
- 1:21:47I didn't like the whole LMP3 thing.
- 1:21:49I didn't understand why they even needed to do that.
- 1:21:51But what I don't want to see is Rolex and some of the other races and Sebring, etc.
- 1:21:55Or this entire series just become LMP2 cars because it's just NASCAR.
- 1:22:02With prototypes at that point, because they're all the same, you know,
- 1:22:05basically the same chassis, same engine.
- 1:22:07Does anybody really watch the LMP2 race?
- 1:22:09Like I couldn't tell you who to root for the end of the day.
- 1:22:11So that's not exciting.
- 1:22:13And LMP1 is kind of a bust right now.
- 1:22:16To your point, the excitement is in the GT class because that's where
- 1:22:19I can get excited as an enthusiast about cars that I might see at an
- 1:22:24auto show, or I might see Or I might, you know, or something like that.
- 1:22:27It's closer to reality for me than a lot of the other stuff.
- 1:22:30And don't get me wrong.
- 1:22:30I love my LMP one cars, but there's just nobody there right now.
- 1:22:34So let's talk about other things that happened during
- 1:22:36the winter, outside of Rolex.
- 1:22:38In our world, we did some virtual racing.
- 1:22:40So as this airs, it's actually airing on the last day on the championship round
- 1:22:45of our virtual racing league for lupus.
- 1:22:47So if you haven't been catching up on that, we've been doing
- 1:22:50that for the last eight weeks.
- 1:22:51It was a DTM inspired series.
- 1:22:54We went back and kind of looked at the classic DTM days.
- 1:22:58We allowed cars from Audi, Benz, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Ford, and Opel, because those
- 1:23:03were the brands that ran in that series.
- 1:23:05Mixed class racing, just like IMSA.
- 1:23:07And we raised almost 1, 500 for lupus in the name of one of our members.
- 1:23:13If you guys haven't caught up on that, you can go back and watch the
- 1:23:15replays of the live streams on Patreon.
- 1:23:17You can go back and see the scoreboard on our website.
- 1:23:21Good showing on the part of both teams from Garage Ride and GTM.
- 1:23:24It was a well thought series.
- 1:23:26It was a lot of fun.
- 1:23:27And I'm really curious to see how the championship race turns
- 1:23:30out at Road Atlanta, which is a petite, petite Le Mans.
- 1:23:3430 laps, two mandatory stops, mixed GTLM and LMP cars.
- 1:23:39So that should be an exciting finale.
- 1:23:42If you haven't tuned in yet, you should tune in for that race.
- 1:23:44It's going to be a lot of fun.
- 1:23:46So we look forward to that.
- 1:23:47And, uh, again, thanks for everybody that has contributed.
- 1:23:50If you haven't.
- 1:23:51So far, and you're still in time to donate to the cause.
- 1:23:54You can go to our website and search VRL for charity.
- 1:23:58That's VRL virtual racing league for charity, uh, on the website.
- 1:24:02And there's links to bring you to those spots where you can donate
- 1:24:05and do all that kind of stuff.
- 1:24:06Outside of that, there were some other things that happened during the winter.
- 1:24:09We saw a robo race car immediately crash into a wall.
- 1:24:14Uh, they tried to simulate, you know, what Audi did and a few others
- 1:24:18with, you know, quote unquote, autonomous driving on track.
- 1:24:20But this time they did it with an LMP car and it made it straight
- 1:24:24out of the pits, hooked a Louie and went right into the wall.
- 1:24:28Auto drive technology.
- 1:24:31Somebody has to touch the steering wheel to make it work.
- 1:24:33So that didn't end very well, but outside of that, there were a couple
- 1:24:37other cool things that happened.
- 1:24:38You guys know, I'm a WRC fan, so this might only hit close to home for two other
- 1:24:42people in the world that are listening to this, but Yari Mati Latvala, the madman
- 1:24:48of WRC, one of the remaining kind of veterans of the sport, unlike a lot of
- 1:24:53the new guys that are in there, decided to throw down and kind of park his GR Yaris.
- 1:24:58WRC car to the side and jump into Carlos Sanz, 1991 Celica GT winning WRC Toyota.
- 1:25:08They took the car out of a museum.
- 1:25:09They take this 1991 Celica out of the museum and Yari throws down the gauntlet
- 1:25:15and says, I can guarantee you this car is as competitive as the new cars are.
- 1:25:19And everybody's like, ah, what are you talking about?
- 1:25:21And I've said this myself.
- 1:25:22I wonder if the old group B cars or even the later cars could
- 1:25:26compete with the new WRC cars.
- 1:25:29And I tell you what, I don't want to give it away, but you got to watch the video.
- 1:25:33You got to check it out.
- 1:25:34I mean, he throws down in this thing and it is an awesome run.
- 1:25:38And I mean, he earned the title madman.
- 1:25:40WRC for multiple reasons, but he does a hell of a showing.
- 1:25:44And I will say some of those old rally cars can still really
- 1:25:47send it at the end of the day.
- 1:25:49So that was a lot of fun.
- 1:25:50So check that out.
- 1:25:51Meanwhile, as we know, Ken Block has kind of pulled out of the gym,
- 1:25:55kind of world he's kind of pulled back from the things he's doing.
- 1:25:58Obviously he's big and still into Hoonigan stuff and building crazy
- 1:26:01cars and all that, but Travis Pastrana has picked up the torch from Ken.
- 1:26:06And has now decided to get into that Jim Connor world and try to create some of
- 1:26:11those videos and him being from DMV area, specifically from Maryland and whatnot.
- 1:26:17As some of you might recall, we talked about him trying to start up a track
- 1:26:20on the Eastern shore, specifically for rally and things like that.
- 1:26:23He decided as a publicity stunt, as now he's engaging in this and involved with
- 1:26:27Subaru and things like that to jump.
- 1:26:30His Subaru WRC car across gasoline alley it basically
- 1:26:35there in the harbor in Annapolis.
- 1:26:37And there's a tons of videos of that.
- 1:26:38That was really cool to see.
- 1:26:39There's some guys that I work with that happened to be there in person.
- 1:26:43And, you know, they were sending the videos around.
- 1:26:45Obviously it's all very practiced and staged and timed, but it's
- 1:26:48still kind of cool to see a rally car flying through the air.
- 1:26:52In the middle of, you know, Annapolis
- 1:26:54F1 driver, Lewis Hamilton, you know, you may have heard of him.
- 1:26:58He drives for the Petronas F1 team from Mercedes, but he won his seventh
- 1:27:04lucky number seven F1 championship.
- 1:27:07And that's all I have to say about that because it's old hat now.
- 1:27:11Nobody gives a crap.
- 1:27:11The
- 1:27:13question is, is he going to go for eight?
- 1:27:15Right?
- 1:27:15I think that's the question on everybody's mind.
- 1:27:17He does
- 1:27:17sign the contract with Mercedes for more time.
- 1:27:20So yes, he is going for eight.
- 1:27:22So what we're, what you're telling me is it's yet another boring
- 1:27:25season of F1 to come for 2021.
- 1:27:27My prediction is Daniel Ricciardo is going to destroy in the McLaren
- 1:27:33and win his first championship.
- 1:27:36That's my prediction.
- 1:27:36That's my hot take right now.
- 1:27:38And we know from listening to the International Man of Mystery
- 1:27:41episode, folks like Judd are getting super excited because Alonzo is
- 1:27:45coming back this year as well.
- 1:27:47So true, true.
- 1:27:48It'd be interesting to dice up, you know, can Alonzo come back and
- 1:27:50be as competitive as he once was?
- 1:27:53You know, I mean, obviously his hopes and dreams of getting that triple crown
- 1:27:56being the next, you know, Jim Clark, Mario Andretti to win Le Mans Indy and F1 have
- 1:28:02Let's say been shattered a little bit.
- 1:28:04So I'm excited to see him come back to F1 and dice it up.
- 1:28:07What I'm worried though, is as Tanya mentioned on the last official drive
- 1:28:11thru episode we did, you know, maybe he's more of a Valentino Rossi.
- 1:28:14He's going to give those guys a run for their money, but is he going to
- 1:28:17push to take that championship away from Hamilton in this 2021 season?
- 1:28:23That's what I'm thinking.
- 1:28:23Personally,
- 1:28:23cause he, he's going to Renault.
- 1:28:25Correct.
- 1:28:26I don't think the Renault is.
- 1:28:28Competitive.
- 1:28:29So I don't think he's going to do well, but one person I'm anxious to see or
- 1:28:34excited to see is Sebastian hair loss.
- 1:28:36Vettel in the Aston Martin.
- 1:28:42So he lost it.
- 1:28:43He lost more hair.
- 1:28:44So he's lighter now, but in that Aston Martin, you'll, if you recall, that is
- 1:28:48the, uh, the former of the racing point car, which was actually very competitive
- 1:28:53and won a couple of races last year.
- 1:28:55It's got a Mercedes drive train.
- 1:28:56So it's.
- 1:28:57It's actually a really good car.
- 1:28:59And I think with Vettel driving, you know, I I'm excited to see the
- 1:29:03kind of year he has after such a disappointing year with Ferrari last year.
- 1:29:07So what I heard was it's not an Aston Martin.
- 1:29:10It's an Aston Martin chassis.
- 1:29:12I believe.
- 1:29:12But it's like a Tata power plant and
- 1:29:16a Mercedes drivetrain.
- 1:29:18So the only thing that can beat a Mercedes apparently is another Mercedes.
- 1:29:21Yeah.
- 1:29:22We'll take that with a grain of salt and I guess we'll see what happens.
- 1:29:25It wouldn't be a drive through episode if we didn't finally get to
- 1:29:29our fan favorite section, known as.
- 1:29:32Would you like some fries with that?
- 1:29:36So take it away, Tanya.
- 1:29:37Of course you have to click when the title says, Florida
- 1:29:40Man Builds Very Florida Jeep.
- 1:29:45You can't not click and see what that says.
- 1:29:48Apparently this guy, I don't know why, he, he does have a 2020 Jeep
- 1:29:52Gladiator that he cut in half.
- 1:29:54That seems like a good use.
- 1:29:56Of, uh, of a Jeep Gladiator.
- 1:29:57Anyway, cutting, cut it in half to create this custom Jeep that looks like it
- 1:30:01could have been part of Mad Max films.
- 1:30:04I don't know.
- 1:30:05And it's got two extra wheels in the back.
- 1:30:08Um, so it's a six wheel Jeep Gladiator now.
- 1:30:11Um, I assume for the intents of the photo, the doors are off just to be off.
- 1:30:17I assume you can put them back on, but maybe you can't, maybe you just
- 1:30:19ride open to the wind all the time.
- 1:30:22I mean, it's just.
- 1:30:23Looks like something preparing for end of days, maybe.
- 1:30:26And you got like six of the other Florida buddies on the back with guns.
- 1:30:30I don't know.
- 1:30:31I mean, is this an attempt to build a cheap six by six G
- 1:30:34wagon like Mercedes had because
- 1:30:37apparently he put an LS three, 500 horsepower engine in it also.
- 1:30:42Well, okay.
- 1:30:43Hold on.
- 1:30:44Why would you buy a new car?
- 1:30:45Could you just go buy an old like YJ and do the same thing?
- 1:30:49That question is as old as time.
- 1:30:52That's what Jeep people do.
- 1:30:53When I was on the Jeep forums, because I used to be a Jeep person, you would find
- 1:30:58people spending 45, 000 for a brand new JK Unlimited Rubicon, taking all the Rubicon
- 1:31:07out of it and putting another 50 grand into upgraded axles and wheels and tires
- 1:31:12and suspension and all kinds of the crap.
- 1:31:13You're right.
- 1:31:14Why not just start with an ax or a sport.
- 1:31:16you know, something base model or something older and just do that.
- 1:31:20It, this just baffles my mind.
- 1:31:22I'm going to spend 60 grand on a Jeep gladiator truck and
- 1:31:25then spend 250 grand to make it whatever the hell this thing is.
- 1:31:30But it wouldn't be a Florida man story if it didn't involve
- 1:31:33catching on fire, a scented candle, dumpster water, uh, Gators.
- 1:31:39I mean, there's gotta be something, you know, did he print a check?
- 1:31:41and bought it from Walmart.
- 1:31:43I mean, there's got to be more to this, right?
- 1:31:45Apparently, I mean, it's for sale.
- 1:31:46So there's an ad other than the fact that they have poor spellings and grammar and
- 1:31:52apparently it tows 12, 000 foot pounds.
- 1:31:54What does that mean?
- 1:31:57According to the ad,
- 1:31:5812, 000 pounds of food.
- 1:31:59Feet, it
- 1:32:02that has 12,000 foot pounds of towing capacity.
- 1:32:05So the hat that for whatever that possibly means,
- 1:32:09Oh my God.
- 1:32:11I mean, I don't know.
- 1:32:12And, and according to the ad, the listing, it, it can take on and off
- 1:32:16road challenges and double quote the article in, in that listing effortlessly
- 1:32:21hits 90 miles an hour on the highway and not be all over three lanes.
- 1:32:26Not me.
- 1:32:30That is marketing gold right there.
- 1:32:32I'll be all over it.
- 1:32:34So wait, can it mountain bike trail?
- 1:32:36That's what I want to know.
- 1:32:37No, it cannot.
- 1:32:38It can take off road challenges.
- 1:32:40So I
- 1:32:43mean, if a soccer field is an off road challenge for this thing, I mean, I.
- 1:32:47Okay, hands down.
- 1:32:48I get it, but
- 1:32:48I will tell you this thing looks killer parked outside the local Starbucks
- 1:32:52Does it fit in the parking spot?
- 1:32:54It fits in three of them
- 1:32:57It does long ones like a cracker barrel fits it,
- 1:33:00but it's not all up all over four lanes
- 1:33:10Tesla gonna Tesla
- 1:33:11I feel like there's been more than just this time that it's happened, or
- 1:33:14maybe this is the same article I'm just misremembering, or it happened again.
- 1:33:18Another Tesla model exploding in a garage in China.
- 1:33:24Are they being
- 1:33:26used as bombs?
- 1:33:28Like, I mean, I'm not trying to make a joke of it, but it
- 1:33:30doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
- 1:33:32This, this is a covert ops mission on the US to destroy China by
- 1:33:36blowing them up with Tesla batteries.
- 1:33:39I mean, there's never really too much information about these articles.
- 1:33:42It's just kind of like, Oh, this happened.
- 1:33:44And I'm like, I know, I'm pretty sure I've heard of it happening before.
- 1:33:48It's unclear.
- 1:33:49I mean, could it be someone deliberately doing this?
- 1:33:52You have a serial Tesla exploder.
- 1:33:55I don't know.
- 1:33:55Not trying to start a new rumor.
- 1:33:57No,
- 1:33:57his perfume line, his perfume line is called Musk by Elon.
- 1:34:03Well, you know this.
- 1:34:04That's the scented
- 1:34:05candle, Musk by Elon.
- 1:34:09This solves the problem of not being able to heat your Tesla with, you
- 1:34:14know, so you just start a fire.
- 1:34:16Oh god.
- 1:34:19All right, so I'm going to set the stage for you.
- 1:34:21Okay.
- 1:34:22Somewhere in This
- 1:34:23is fantastic, and I've only watched like two
- 1:34:26seconds.
- 1:34:27Somewhere in Appalachia, there is a race that none
- 1:34:31of us have ever seen before, and it is considered the most
- 1:34:35insane Barbie racing ever.
- 1:34:37We posted this on the show notes, so you definitely need to check it out.
- 1:34:41This is, this is 15 minutes, so I'm just going to All
- 1:34:46you need is the first 10 seconds.
- 1:34:51It is like a 15 minute video, but to Tanya's point, you only
- 1:34:54need about 10 seconds to get the gist of where this is going.
- 1:34:59This is adults riding power wheels down rough dirt hill.
- 1:35:05It is
- 1:35:06the funniest thing I have seen a long
- 1:35:08time.
- 1:35:09Oh, MG the, the, the crazy dangerous things people do
- 1:35:14and they're like crashing.
- 1:35:15They're like flipping off these things.
- 1:35:17One guy makes it, one guy makes and the crowd goes.
- 1:35:20And it's kind of funny because it's like a J shaped ski slope almost,
- 1:35:25but it's super rough to your point.
- 1:35:26And there's people lining.
- 1:35:27I mean, I'm surprised they're not out there with air horns and like
- 1:35:30cowbells and stuff like you'd see, but the wrecks are spectacular.
- 1:35:35Is the guy who won, cause I've just been randomly fast forwarding through this
- 1:35:38thing is the guy who won the dude in the, in the United States flag onesie.
- 1:35:42I think he's the only one that makes it all the way down without
- 1:35:45the thing, blowing up, flipping over or crashing into the people.
- 1:35:48But it's fantastic.
- 1:35:50The guy I just saw, he made it all the way.
- 1:35:53He had to pick it up and carry it the rest of the way.
- 1:35:55Oh yeah,
- 1:35:56it happens too because like it's half busted, but it still counts
- 1:36:00if they carry it across the line.
- 1:36:01It is outrageous.
- 1:36:03I've never
- 1:36:03seen anything like this.
- 1:36:04He did make it down.
- 1:36:05He did make it down on like a, what looked like maybe a hummer.
- 1:36:08Yes, yes, that's the one.
- 1:36:10Yeah.
- 1:36:10And then he, and then he stands there in his United States
- 1:36:13flag, onesie, chugging a beer.
- 1:36:15Well, again, motor sports fans, all sorts of different disciplines.
- 1:36:20And this one I'd never seen before.
- 1:36:22So apparently downhill power wheel, Super G is where it's at right now.
- 1:36:28I will tell you that this is not, I mean, there's something very similar
- 1:36:33to this in the motorcycle world where they do it with big wheels
- 1:36:36on roads like tail of the dragon.
- 1:36:38All I know is the rule book for this is non existent.
- 1:36:42It's a paperback.
- 1:36:43And there are no safety regulations whatsoever.
- 1:36:48This guy like went down.
- 1:36:50I think it was.
- 1:36:50Get a little G power.
- 1:36:52He like flipped over and like barrel rolled and all in three of the wheels
- 1:36:56like blew off its power wheels.
- 1:36:58That's the man that takes
- 1:36:59it up and then carries it across the line.
- 1:37:02It is amazing.
- 1:37:03This is definitely hashtag hold my beer.
- 1:37:05Well, I will say this, it's right up there with some videos that we
- 1:37:08saw, and we may attach this to the show notes, which is the guys that
- 1:37:11are building the cardboard sleds and running them down the tube slides.
- 1:37:16This is right there with it, but this is more of the Shiner
- 1:37:19approach to that style of racing.
- 1:37:23So, both worth watching, both absolutely hilarious.
- 1:37:26So, if you guys recall from a previous drive thru episode.
- 1:37:30I clued you in on one piece of would you like fries with that, where a gentleman
- 1:37:34wanted to figure out how good and show the world how good square bodies really are.
- 1:37:40So if you remember this clown, you know, it's 20 minutes of
- 1:37:43your life you'll never get back.
- 1:37:45Well he created another video where he decided that he needed to put a Hellcat,
- 1:37:51brand new, on a set of horse and buggy wheels and see how far he could get.
- 1:37:56So I'm like, all right.
- 1:37:58Same idiot as before.
- 1:38:00Let me clue in on this.
- 1:38:01Let me watch it.
- 1:38:02And I'm just baffled.
- 1:38:03He's, you know, talking about a sponsor built these hubs for him so he could put
- 1:38:06these, you know, Conestoga wagon wheels on this thing and he makes it work.
- 1:38:10I see the car in the garage.
- 1:38:12And my next question is, how does this thing turn?
- 1:38:14Are these hubs big enough?
- 1:38:16How does this change the geometry of the car?
- 1:38:17All this kind of stuff.
- 1:38:19So he pulls it out the garage and, you know, normal stupidity ensues
- 1:38:24and he's doing burnouts and like all this kind of stuff and whatnot.
- 1:38:27But he drives it into town, drives it through a McDonald's drive
- 1:38:30through, like all these kinds of people are looking at him.
- 1:38:32He gets screwed up.
- 1:38:33spooked by the cops a little bit because he's, you know, he's driving,
- 1:38:35basically he's driving around illegally on these horse and buggy wheels.
- 1:38:38They let him go by.
- 1:38:39Then he, you know, tries to do some burnouts and whatnot.
- 1:38:42And by the end of this thing, you're just appalled because you feel bad
- 1:38:45for the car because you notice the amount of damage he's doing to it.
- 1:38:49The hubs aren't big enough.
- 1:38:50The wagon wheels bashing into the fenders, they're pinching
- 1:38:54the body panels and whatnot.
- 1:38:55I mean, this brand new Hellcat is basically ruined.
- 1:38:57And then when he does this kind of final burnout, the wagon wheel,
- 1:39:01the tire just like is obliterated.
- 1:39:04And then because of the way those tires are built, it ends
- 1:39:06up whipping the side of the car.
- 1:39:08And it just, it just beats the fenders in and it ruins the pain.
- 1:39:11And, you know, they're having, they're laughing and having a good time.
- 1:39:14And I'm just like, this is just more internet brain rot.
- 1:39:17If you want to see what these guys are up to, check it out.
- 1:39:20We posted the video, but I just beside myself.
- 1:39:23I've only got one question
- 1:39:25for all the Quakers.
- 1:39:27Oh yeah.
- 1:39:28Yeah.
- 1:39:28The Amish rather.
- 1:39:31Cause why does he have to dress up like that?
- 1:39:33I don't know.
- 1:39:33He didn't do that in the square body video.
- 1:39:35So
- 1:39:36I want to know when, at what point in the video does he die of dysentery?
- 1:39:41We're gonna call that car the Oregon Trail.
- 1:39:43But you never actually see, there's never actually video of him turning.
- 1:39:48All the video is always ever of the steering wheel straight.
- 1:39:51Trying to like skip through to see because I don't understand.
- 1:39:53The turning radius would be a bit.
- 1:39:56Horrendous, horrendous.
- 1:39:58I
- 1:39:58mean a Volkswagen would have a better turning radius.
- 1:40:01Than this thing.
- 1:40:04Absolutely.
- 1:40:05I mean, cause you're right.
- 1:40:06The, the little bicycle tire would just hit the fender after a minimal
- 1:40:10amount of steering wheel input.
- 1:40:12That's just, wow.
- 1:40:13Somebody who's got too much money.
- 1:40:14I just feel sad for that.
- 1:40:15Okay.
- 1:40:15I guess that pretty much wraps up.
- 1:40:17Would you like fries with that?
- 1:40:18So let's just touch on a couple quick pieces of news and
- 1:40:20some thank yous and whatnot.
- 1:40:21As we wrap up this final episode of the drive through for season one.
- 1:40:26Something to note on our end.
- 1:40:27You know, we're really planning to have a really cool year this year.
- 1:40:30You know, obviously last year was a bit of a bust.
- 1:40:32Um, we were able to launch the podcast and still do some,
- 1:40:36some events throughout 2020.
- 1:40:37We're hoping 2021 will be a lot better for the GTN members and
- 1:40:41our fans and everybody else.
- 1:40:43So we've got some exciting things planned.
- 1:40:45Obviously we have still not now nailed down.
- 1:40:48We're still When and where summer bash is going to be.
- 1:40:50That's always the big question.
- 1:40:51That's our big anniversary party.
- 1:40:53So as soon as we know that we'll let you guys know, we are still
- 1:40:57projecting on going to some big name events, uh, some races and whatnot.
- 1:41:00We're going to, we're going to maybe do some drag racing this
- 1:41:02year, some off roading this year.
- 1:41:04We're going to go to tail the dragon.
- 1:41:06There's a lot of really cool stuff 2021 schedule.
- 1:41:09So it's not all.
- 1:41:11Just about going to the track and making some left and right turns
- 1:41:14and sometimes going straight, you know, look out for that.
- 1:41:16Watch the club schedule on the, on our website and just stay tuned for more.
- 1:41:21I also want to do a quick shout out, you know, to all our sponsors.
- 1:41:24You know, we picked up some new relationships over the winter.
- 1:41:27You know, obviously a big thank you to Garage Riot for
- 1:41:29helping us out with the VRL.
- 1:41:30Big thank you again to Dave Peters and the guys at HPD Junkie for always supplying
- 1:41:34us with up to date information there.
- 1:41:36You know, the boys at Chazz's, you know, and so on down the line and all
- 1:41:40of our sponsors, we did pick up a new one Harper home services of Michigan.
- 1:41:44So if you're in our new middle and west region, and you're looking for somebody
- 1:41:48to help you out there with home remodeling and things like that, reach out to HHS.
- 1:41:53Their website is Harper homes of michigan.
- 1:41:55com and you can see what's going on there.
- 1:41:58But we do have a bunch of new patrons to thank throughout these winter months.
- 1:42:03So we're going to go through that list and make sure we do a quick
- 1:42:05shout out to all those folks that have been supporting us, you know, and
- 1:42:09funding us and things of that nature.
- 1:42:10Big shout out to Christine and Amr, Jim and Sue Miller, Rebecca Griffith,
- 1:42:17Harry Brill,
- 1:42:18Michael Sonderby, John and Carolyn Wade.
- 1:42:22And BJ, the better Harrington.
- 1:42:26Well, I would, I would argue that Bruiser is the better Harrington.
- 1:42:28Well,
- 1:42:28that's true.
- 1:42:29But we, we, we would be remiss if we did not give a shout out to the, the show's,
- 1:42:35you know, creator and, uh, organizer and manager and all around great person.
- 1:42:42Yeah, that's true.
- 1:42:43Thank you for a great season one.
- 1:42:45We look forward to what's coming in season two.
- 1:42:47And again, to everybody that's out there, everything that we're doing, the
- 1:42:51podcast, the Instagram, the website, the live streaming, the VRLs, the charity
- 1:42:55events, everything that we've done.
- 1:42:56We've got going on.
- 1:42:57We are super busy here at HQ.
- 1:42:59None of this stuff would be possible without your guys support as fans,
- 1:43:03as members, as contributors, as authors, you know, et cetera.
- 1:43:07And we want to thank all of our guests that have come on the show in season one.
- 1:43:10I mean, we could sit here and rattle off all their names and go back over
- 1:43:14the episodes, but you know what?
- 1:43:15You can do that by visiting our podcast.
- 1:43:18You're already listening to it, so go back and look at all
- 1:43:21those guests that we've had.
- 1:43:22We've put out almost 50 episodes in less than a year.
- 1:43:26So we are geared up to do about the same next year with all new
- 1:43:29content, all new guests, really big names, really awesome stuff.
- 1:43:32So look forward to great and new content coming into this new year.
- 1:43:362021 season.
- 1:43:38So again, thank you all.
- 1:43:39You know, none of this would be possible without you.
- 1:43:41So we tip our hats and we say, here's the next season.
- 1:43:45Goodbye.
- 1:43:46Bus
- 1:43:56cars in back of us all just waiting to order.
- 1:43:59There's some idiot and a Volvo lights on behind me.
- 1:44:03Highly not going to scream.
- 1:44:05Hey, what you're trying to do?
- 1:44:07Blind me.
- 1:44:08My wife says maybe we should
