- 0:01Acts chapter 18. Let us pray.
- 0:06Oh Lord, our God who reigns on high, we love you, Lord Jesus.
- 0:11We thank you, Father, for another day to come and worship
- 0:15you in spirit and truth. We thank you God for these
- 0:18eternal words on the page. We thank you, God, that you have
- 0:22given us your full authority to walk in.
- 0:26God, I pray right now in the name of Jesus for healing from
- 0:29on high. I pray for a sound mind.
- 0:32God, I pray that we can silence all the accusations of the
- 0:36enemy. Father, let us be fixated upon
- 0:40your face. Jesus, we just want you and only
- 0:45you. We want to touch the hem of your
- 0:47garment. We want to come into the holiest
- 0:50of holy places. We want to dine and Sup with
- 0:53you. We want more.
- 0:56God, You have showed us your glory, and Lord we have tasted
- 1:01and we have seen. And God we are lovesick longing
- 1:05for a home. Lord that we've never been to.
- 1:09We are homesick for that. And Lord, we just want more of
- 1:13You. We want to be enveloped.
- 1:16We want the Shekinah glory, God, and we consecrate the temple.
- 1:21Lord, we get rid of all of the idols.
- 1:24Lord, we toss them out, we tos them to the side.
- 1:28Everything that has captivated us, everything that has
- 1:31distracted us, all the idols that we have misplaced, our
- 1:36worship towards, our adoration towards God, we get rid of those
- 1:41things right now, right here in this moment.
- 1:45Lord, I pray Holy Spirit, highlight the things in our
- 1:49lives that are not of God. Highlight the things that are
- 1:55ensnaring us and tangling us in the cares of this world.
- 2:00God, I pray that we could come up to new heights.
- 2:03Lord, I pray that we can come out of this world God, and we
- 2:09can live separated and called out.
- 2:12Lord, that we can live holy, because you are holy, You are
- 2:17worthy, and there was only one found worthy.
- 2:21And Lord, we overcome the enemy by the blood of the Lamb and by
- 2:25the words of our testimony. And so, God, we testify to your
- 2:30goodness. Today, Lord, we sing praises
- 2:35unto your holy name. Today, come inhabit the praises
- 2:39of your people who are called by your name.
- 2:43Holy Spirit, guide us. I decrease as you increase.
- 2:47Holy Spirit, give us sound doctrine and theology.
- 2:50Today, let these words jump off the page.
- 2:53Let these words jump into our heart.
- 2:55Let these words saturate our DNA.
- 2:59Let them become on a molecular level, God, us and we and you
- 3:05and you and us. Let us abide in you.
- 3:08And it's in Jesus Christ, holy and precious name that I pray.
- 3:13Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 3:18After these things, Paul departed from Athens and came to
- 3:23Corinth. Here you're going to get a
- 3:26snapshot of what it looks like for Paul to write to the
- 3:31Corinthians. These were very carnal minded
- 3:35Christians and those things are usually separated from each
- 3:41other, but these Corinthians had to be brought up.
- 3:44The city of Corinth was known for its immorality and
- 3:48debauchery. And here Paul is going into the
- 3:51hardest places. He didn't pick the easiest
- 3:54places to go. And that is our call, friends.
- 3:57We should not shy away from the places that are dangerous.
- 4:01We should not shy away from the places that have the worst
- 4:07reputation. We need to go straight in and
- 4:11proclaim the name of Jesus because he has people in those
- 4:14cities, people of peace who desperately need to hear the
- 4:18good news of Jesus Christ and what he has done for us to and
- 4:24found. A certain Jew named Aquila born
- 4:27in Pontus, lately come from Italy and his wife Priscilla
- 4:32because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart
- 4:36from Rome. So there is the subtle
- 4:38persecution, there is the anti-Semitism there in Rome
- 4:43forcing all the Jews out. And did you know that it is
- 4:47never amounted to anything but the preservation of that people
- 4:52group? The Jews are still here and
- 4:55we're still talking about it. Mainstream politics, they're
- 4:58still in the headlines, friends, and they're not going anywhere.
- 5:02And you can see here that Paul has found a brother in Christ,
- 5:07someone who is a fellow worker with him.
- 5:10And let's see how this interaction with Aquila and
- 5:15Priscilla go. Three.
- 5:17And because he was one of the same craft, he abode with them
- 5:22and wrought for by their occupation, they were tent
- 5:27makers. So there's a little back story
- 5:31of Paul as a tent maker supporting his own ministry.
- 5:35Imagine that. Imagine how pleased God is when
- 5:40we put our hand to the plow and are found working.
- 5:43If you do not work, you do not eat.
- 5:45This is very simple and we should not just sit around on
- 5:51our blessed assurance. We need to get in the game.
- 5:54We need to make sure that we are found doing the Lord's work.
- 5:59And Paul here had a great understanding that he did not
- 6:02need to go and beg people for money.
- 6:05He did not need to manipulate people into giving him money if
- 6:10they were led to do so by the generosity of their own heart
- 6:15and by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:17That was one thing. But because Paul understood the
- 6:21heart of God, that God would take care of him.
- 6:24And as you look and study the life of Paul, that is exactly
- 6:28what God did. He took care of them just like
- 6:31the birds in the air and the lilies of the field.
- 6:34He took no thought for tomorrow. And that is our mandate,
- 6:37friends. And so many people have started
- 6:41to worship Mammon because they do not trust God.
- 6:44Their faith is so diminished that all they can hyper fixate
- 6:48upon is gain. All they can hyper fixate upon
- 6:53is even the lack that they have in their house.
- 6:56And they do not trust God for today.
- 6:59And that is a call for us to be like Paul, to be like the
- 7:04apostle Paul, and to support our ministry and to believe that God
- 7:10is going to take care of us for today, just for today, and
- 7:16tomorrow if He gives us another day.
- 7:18We take no thought for tomorrow, but we rest in the fact that God
- 7:23is feeding us and taking care of us.
- 7:26We have sought the Kingdom of God first and we are receiving
- 7:30all of the blessings from God Almighty for today for and he
- 7:38reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath and persuaded the Jews
- 7:43and the Greeks. So here Paul is, he goes
- 7:47straight to the synagogue and he starts to proclaim the good news
- 7:51of Jesus Christ. He's reasoning with them, which
- 7:55meant there was dialogue. He did not just go in there and
- 7:59hammered down on the Bible and not give anybody opportunity to
- 8:02speak. He was able to sit and to listen
- 8:07and to reason. 5 And when Silas and Timothy come from Macedonia,
- 8:12Paul was pressed in the Spirit and testified to the Jews that
- 8:17Jesus was Christ. Jesus is Christ, friends, He is
- 8:23the Messiah, and he is seated at the right hand of God and he has
- 8:27gone to prepare a place for us. And you need to know that Paul,
- 8:32through all of his learnedness, all of the studying in
- 8:39Jerusalem, and all of the studying that he did with
- 8:43Gamaliel, resulted in all of the reality that Jesus is the
- 8:50Christ. And that is what you're going to
- 8:53find. The deeper you go into
- 8:54Scripture, the more layers you pull back, the more you're going
- 8:58to see that the Bible interprets the Bible and it all supports
- 9:03itself. It is congruent, and it all
- 9:05points to Jesus Christ the Messiah. 6 And when they oppose
- 9:12themselves and blasphemed, he shook his clothing, and said
- 9:19unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads.
- 9:22I am clean, and from now on I will go to the Gentiles.
- 9:27So here Paul is trying to persuade and reason with the
- 9:32Jews. The Jews will not accept it.
- 9:35Paul shakes the dust off and he tells them that he is free from
- 9:40their guilt, free from their blood.
- 9:43And we need to know that as long as we have preached the gospel,
- 9:48God will give the increase. We cannot control the
- 9:52temperature. All we do is we show up and say,
- 9:55God, here I am, use me. And then we go go out and we
- 9:59scatter the seed, knowing that most of the seed is going to
- 10:02fall on unprofitable soil. But we need to know that it is
- 10:06still God's eternal plan for us to be seed sowers that go out
- 10:12and to scatter it abroad, not knowing if it's going to produce
- 10:18fruit or not. God's the one that makes it land
- 10:21on the fertile soil. God's the one who makes it grow.
- 10:24God's the one who gives the increase.
- 10:27Friends, we are just unprofitable servants in the
- 10:32Lord's house. We're doorkeepers. 7 And he
- 10:38departed from there and entered into a certain man's house named
- 10:42Justice, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to
- 10:47the synagogue. So this Justice's house was
- 10:50right beside the synagogue, attached to it perhaps.
- 10:53And he was a righteous man and a God.
- 10:55Fear 8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed
- 11:01on the Lord with all his house, and many of the Corinthians
- 11:05hearing, believed and were baptized.
- 11:08So here we go. You can see God's at work, Holy
- 11:11Spirit's moving mightily in their midst, and you can see
- 11:15that this ruler of the synagogue had the wherewithal and the
- 11:19mental fortitude, and God had opened his heart up to
- 11:22understand, and then he received salvation, him and his house. 9
- 11:30Then spoke the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision.
- 11:34Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not your peace, for I am
- 11:39with you, and no man shall set on you to hurt you, for I have
- 11:44much people in this city. So verse 9 and 10, you can see
- 11:48that God needed to speak to to Paul, the Lord Jesus himself
- 11:54speaking to Paul telling him do not be afraid, do not be
- 12:00disappointed, do not be discouraged.
- 12:03I have many in this city. And isn't that what he told
- 12:06Elijah when Elijah told the Lord, just Take Me Out and the
- 12:10Lord said no, I have prophets that have not bowed the knee to
- 12:14bow. And you can see here that Jesus
- 12:19needed to encourage Paul and tell him not to be afraid. 11
- 12:24And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the
- 12:27word of God among them. So it was a great encouragement
- 12:30to Paul to have a visitation from Jesus Christ.
- 12:34And he stayed there another year and a half, teaching and
- 12:37preaching and encouraging and exhorting.
- 12:42And you can see here that he established the Corinthian
- 12:45church. And then we're going to find out
- 12:47later on in the New Testament some of the things that were
- 12:50happening in that city as Paul is writing to them. 12 And when
- 12:56Gallio was the deputy of IKEA, and the Jews made insurrection
- 13:03with 1 accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment
- 13:08seat, 13 saying, This fellow persuades men to worship God
- 13:15contrary to the law. 14 And when Paul was now about to open his
- 13:20mouth, Galio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or
- 13:25wicked lewdness, Oh, you Jews, reason that I should bear with
- 13:29you. 15 But if it be a question of words and names of your law,
- 13:35look you to it, for I will be no judge of such matters.
- 13:41So here you can see that Galio did not want to have anything to
- 13:45do with all of their backstories, all of their laws
- 13:52and words and names, and he skirted around responsibility
- 13:57here. 16 And he drove them from the judgment seat. 17 Then all
- 14:02the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue,
- 14:06and beat him before the judgement seat.
- 14:09And Galio cared for none of these things.
- 14:12So old Galio was careless and indifferent, and he just thought
- 14:17that he didn't have to give any judgement to the Jews.
- 14:24And then he also turned a blind's eye to the beating of
- 14:27the new synagogue ruler, since the previous had given his life
- 14:32to the Lord Jesus Christ. And here you can see this mob
- 14:35rule. They're bloodthirsty and they're
- 14:38delusional by definition. They're unreasonable people.
- 14:42And there are many like that in our culture and our day and our
- 14:45age. They will not put up with sound
- 14:48doctrine, they will not put up with reasoning.
- 14:53They are bent upon destruction. Friends 18 And Paul after this
- 15:01tarried their yet a good while, and then took his leave of the
- 15:05brothers, and sailed from there into Syria, and with him
- 15:09Priscilla and Aquila, having shaved his head in Quintreya.
- 15:15For he had a vow. So we can see here that Paul had
- 15:21taken this Nazarite vow, perhaps, and he did not just
- 15:27turn his back completely upon the Jews.
- 15:30He still upheld these vows. And perhaps Paul had grown his
- 15:37hair out, and then after the end of the vow, he shaved it, and he
- 15:41was on his way to Jerusalem to offer sacrifice.
- 15:47He was on his way to Jerusalem to finish the vow out, as it was
- 15:52customary. 19 And he came to Ephesus and left from there, and
- 15:59he himself, and he left them there, and he himself entered
- 16:03into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.
- 16:07So here you can see that Paul is going to Ephesus and this is
- 16:12where we get the book of Ephesians from.
- 16:14And you can see that as it was his custom, he went straight to
- 16:18the synagogue to reason with them about Jesus Christ.
- 16:22Paul held no punches. Paul was not afraid of man.
- 16:27Paul was on mission. And we should model and mirror
- 16:31that. Anybody who's been blood bought,
- 16:34born again, who is a Christian, you need to be found spreading
- 16:39the good news of Jesus Christ. No matter the ridicule, no
- 16:42matter if you get made fun of, no matter if you get subtly or
- 16:48outright persecuted. We need to be found spreading
- 16:52the name of the Lord Jesus Christ every single place that
- 16:56we go. 20 And when they desired him to tarry longer time with
- 17:02them, he consented. Not so.
- 17:04He was on mission. He knew that he had to get to
- 17:07Jerusalem to perform the rituals for the Nazarite vow 21 but bade
- 17:15them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that
- 17:20comes in Jerusalem, but I will return again unto you if God
- 17:24wills. And he sailed from Ephesus.
- 17:26So he got there. He encouraged them, but he knew
- 17:30it was time to go. And we need to look for these
- 17:32divine appointments, friends, and we need to know when God is
- 17:35telling us to stay, and we need to know when God is telling us
- 17:39to go, when He has released us. And we cannot let a ministry
- 17:45that is thriving keep us from obeying the word of God.
- 17:49We need to be very in tune with the Lord God Almighty, knowing
- 17:53that his ways are not our ways. And he very well could be
- 17:56calling you from a very profitable setting. 22 And when
- 18:02he had landed at Caesarea and gone up and saluted the church,
- 18:07he went down to Antioch. 23 And after he had spent some time
- 18:11there, he departed and went over all the country of Galatia and
- 18:16Fersia in order strengthening all the disciples.
- 18:20So here Paul is, and he is strengthening them.
- 18:24He's encouraging them, he's exhorting and teaching them and
- 18:28making sure that the roots run deep in these 1st century
- 18:32churches, strengthening all the disciples. 24 And a certain Jew
- 18:39named Apollo's, born in Alexandria, an eloquent man, and
- 18:43mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man was
- 18:48instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in the
- 18:53Spirit, he spoke and taught diligently the things of the
- 18:56Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.
- 18:59Imagine that friends, this man was steeped in the scriptures.
- 19:06He was studying them and he knew them back in front, but he had
- 19:10not yet received the baptism of fire, the Holy Ghost.
- 19:15He had received John's baptism of repentance, which was
- 19:20preparing the way. And we know that John said that
- 19:25he only baptized with water, but there was 1 coming who would
- 19:29baptize them with the Holy Ghost. 26 And he began to speak
- 19:39boldly in the synagogue, whom, when Aquila and Priscilla had
- 19:43heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way
- 19:47of God more perfectly. So isn't this amazing, Aquila
- 19:51and Priscilla? They've been listening to Paul
- 19:53for so long that they are in a position to teach now.
- 19:57And here this eloquent man. Did not think of himself so
- 20:02highly and prideful that he was not teachable.
- 20:06And we need to learn when it is our turn to teach and when it is
- 20:11our turn to be taught. That is the lesson.
- 20:16We cannot be so puffed up with knowledge and pride that we
- 20:20refuse to learn anything. You're going to swim in the deep
- 20:24end of the Holy Bible and never touch the bottom.
- 20:27You can live 10 lifetimes and never exhaust this book that is
- 20:35alive and active. 27 And when he was disposed to pass into
- 20:45Achaea, the brothers wrote, exhorting the disciples to
- 20:48receive him, who when he was come, helped them much which had
- 20:54believed through grace will end on. 28 For he mightily convinced
- 20:59the Jews. And that publicly showing by the
- 21:02scriptures that Jesus was Christ.
- 21:08Christ is the Greek form of Messiah Hamasea.
- 21:12You can see that Yeshua is the long-awaited Christ.
- 21:17He is our everything. He's our All in all.
- 21:21He's the very next breath in your lungs.
- 21:23He's the great I am, and we just need to sit in his presence and
- 21:30be still and know that God is and that is what we are called
- 21:36to do, friends. And here you can see that this
- 21:39early church is spreading like wildfire.
- 21:42You can see that Paul and all of his constituents here Luke is
- 21:47writing to us and we saw all of Aquila and Priscilla and we have
- 21:52Apollo's and Justice. We have all of these wonderful,
- 21:57wonderful people's names, real people in real places, their
- 22:02names recorded for all time sake, inspired by the Holy
- 22:07Ghost, pinned down for your and for my edification.
- 22:12And I hope that you've been blessed by this amazing chapter
- 22:14here in the Word of God. I know I sure have many times
- 22:18over. I'm praying for you and I love
- 22:22you. We'll see you back here
- 22:24tomorrow. God bless you.
