- 1:02Speaker 2: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 2: his compassion for us never fails, and that he has
- 1:08Speaker 2: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. Now, if

- 1:13Speaker 2: to recommend it to a friend, you can hear this
- 1:16Speaker 2: program anytime online at TalkNetworkRadio.com. Well now, here's Richard with
- 1:22Speaker 2: today's reflection.
- 1:24Speaker 3: If your brother sins against you, go and rebuke him
- 1:28Speaker 3: in private. If he listens to you, you have won
- 1:32Speaker 3: your brother. But if he won't listen, take one or
- 1:36Speaker 3: two more with you, so that by the testimony of
- 1:40Speaker 3: two or three witnesses, every fact may be established. If
- 1:45Speaker 3: he pays no attention to them, tell the church. But
- 1:49Speaker 3: if he doesn't pay attention even to the church... Let
- 1:53Speaker 3: him be like an unbeliever and a tax collector to you.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I assure you, whatever you bind on earth is already
- 2:02Speaker 3: bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth is
- 2:05Speaker 3: already loosed in heaven. Again, I assure you, if two
- 2:10Speaker 3: of you on earth agree about any matter that you
- 2:16Speaker 3: pray for, it will be done for you by my
- 2:19Speaker 3: Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered
- 2:24Speaker 3: together in my name, I am there among them. Matthew
- 2:30Speaker 3: chapter 18, beginning with verse 15 and closing with verse 20.
- 2:37Speaker 3: In our last segment, we talked about the fruit of
- 2:42Speaker 3: the Spirit being the result of the overflowing submitted life
- 2:49Speaker 3: to the Holy Spirit. And believer, these things are demonstrated
- 2:55Speaker 3: in many ways in our life. But the greatest demonstration
- 3:01Speaker 3: of the love of God is what he already did
- 3:07Speaker 3: for you and I. He forgave us of our sin.
- 3:12Speaker 3: He forgave us of our sin. And because he demonstrated
- 3:19Speaker 3: that he forgave our sin, then we must forgive the
- 3:27Speaker 3: sins of others. Remember what we just read in the
- 3:33Speaker 3: 18th chapter. This part of the teaching in the scripture
- 3:40Speaker 3: is used in many cases for the way that we
- 3:45Speaker 3: demonstrate the power of God. But the power of God
- 3:50Speaker 3: is demonstrated in a manner in which he chooses, not
- 3:55Speaker 3: the way we choose. But he gives us opportunities to
- 3:59Speaker 3: be used in that particular demonstration. And this particular passage follows.
- 4:08Speaker 3: There is a lesson that is taught, and the teaching
- 4:14Speaker 3: of that lesson is, again, to the one who becomes
- 4:21Speaker 3: the apostle Peter. Peter listened to Jesus' words that were
- 4:28Speaker 3: written earlier as we read in Matthew 18 and verses
- 4:33Speaker 3: 15 through 20. And then in beginning verse 21, he
- 4:40Speaker 3: came to Jesus and he said, Lord, how many times
- 4:47Speaker 3: could My brother sinned against me, and I forgive him.
- 4:53Speaker 3: As many as seven times? I tell you, not as
- 4:59Speaker 3: many as seven, Jesus said to him, but seventy times seven.
- 5:06Speaker 3: And then Jesus goes into a very clear explanation of
- 5:14Speaker 3: his meaning. He talks about This reason, he says, the
- 5:20Speaker 3: kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who
- 5:26Speaker 3: wanted to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began
- 5:32Speaker 3: to settle accounts, one who owed 10,000 talents was brought
- 5:39Speaker 3: before him. Since he had no way to pay it back,
- 5:44Speaker 3: his master commanded that he his wife, his children, and
- 5:50Speaker 3: everything he had be sold to pay the debt. At this,
- 5:57Speaker 3: the slave fell face down before him and said, Be
- 6:02Speaker 3: patient with me, and I will pay you everything. Then
- 6:07Speaker 3: the master of that slave had compassion, released him, and
- 6:13Speaker 3: forgave him the lump. But that slave went out and
- 6:18Speaker 3: found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a
- 6:23Speaker 3: hundred denarii. He grabbed him, started choking him, and said,
- 6:29Speaker 3: Pay what you owe. At this his fellow slave fell
- 6:34Speaker 3: down and began begging him, Be patient with me, and
- 6:39Speaker 3: I will pay you back. But he wasn't willing. On
- 6:43Speaker 3: the contrary, he went and threw him into prison. until
- 6:48Speaker 3: he could pay what was owed. When the other slaves
- 6:52Speaker 3: saw what had taken place, they were deeply distressed and
- 6:57Speaker 3: went and reported to their master everything that had happened. Then,
- 7:04Speaker 3: after he had summoned him, his master said to him,
- 7:09Speaker 3: You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because
- 7:14Speaker 3: you begged me. Shouldn't you also have had mercy on
- 7:19Speaker 3: your fellow slave as I had mercy on you? And
- 7:24Speaker 3: his master got angry and handed him over to the
- 7:27Speaker 3: jailers until he could pay everything that was owed. Listen
- 7:34Speaker 3: to the 35th verse. Earlier, that was a parable of
- 7:40Speaker 3: an explanation. But now this is not a parable. Jesus
- 7:46Speaker 3: then says, so my heavenly father will also do to
- 7:52Speaker 3: you if each of you does not forgive his brother
- 7:57Speaker 3: from his heart. You know, this is a very difficult thing.
- 8:06Speaker 3: It is difficult because man does not have the capacity
- 8:12Speaker 3: to forgive. in the same manner without the love of
- 8:18Speaker 3: God living in him. We have heard testimonies of people
- 8:25Speaker 3: who early in their life had been abused by a
- 8:31Speaker 3: father that perhaps was inebriated or just in a bad way.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And many times this has been unfortunate. But many of
- 8:45Speaker 3: those children have suffered throughout their lives because the father
- 8:51Speaker 3: was so abusive. And this is so unfair. And yet
- 8:58Speaker 3: it happens. And because it happens, then there has to
- 9:04Speaker 3: be something that can free the one who was abused.
- 9:10Speaker 3: And the only thing that can Free those that have
- 9:14Speaker 3: been abused is the love of God that will heal
- 9:18Speaker 3: their wounds and will also give them the capacity to
- 9:22Speaker 3: forgive those who abuse them. It is difficult, but it
- 9:29Speaker 3: is possible through the love of God. You see, believer.
- 9:35Speaker 3: There are so many things. When we read earlier in
- 9:39Speaker 3: another segment about the fruit of the Spirit, remember that
- 9:44Speaker 3: the fruit of the Spirit was love with joy. Those
- 9:48Speaker 3: things that were out of the love of God that
- 9:53Speaker 3: were implanted in us by His Spirit, one of which
- 9:58Speaker 3: was patience. Do see, in this example, it is exemplified
- 10:05Speaker 3: because what is it that is desired by the one
- 10:11Speaker 3: who owes such a debt? Be patient with me. And
- 10:16Speaker 3: his master was patient. patient. And because he was patient,
- 10:24Speaker 3: he was merciful and he forgave his debt totally. Now,
- 10:31Speaker 3: the reason that this is so important is that here
- 10:36Speaker 3: we see an example of the love of God where
- 10:41Speaker 3: he forgives us all of our sin, all of the
- 10:45Speaker 3: debt that we owe. And we have no Right. No
- 10:52Speaker 3: purpose to go to a fellow servant, to one who
- 10:59Speaker 3: is a household of faith, to one who is a brother.
- 11:05Speaker 3: We have no right to go and demand that they
- 11:09Speaker 3: pay us off. And what he's really talking about is forgiving,
- 11:14Speaker 3: because that's what Peter asked. Peter had asked Jesus, how
- 11:19Speaker 3: many times can my brother sin against me and I
- 11:24Speaker 3: forgive him? And Peter says seven times because that is
- 11:29Speaker 3: stretching the human capability to in any way forgive. But
- 11:36Speaker 3: Jesus says beyond human capability, in the love of God,
- 11:43Speaker 3: you will be able to forgive 70 times. Now, this
- 11:49Speaker 3: signifies that God is able to help us forgive sins
- 11:57Speaker 3: in insurmountable measure. It means that beyond any of our
- 12:03Speaker 3: own capacity, we have his ability to forgive sin. And
- 12:11Speaker 3: where is it that that sin is forgiven? when our
- 12:17Speaker 3: brother sins against us. You see, believer, what he was
- 12:24Speaker 3: teaching in the letter that he wrote, Paul's letter to
- 12:30Speaker 3: the church at Galatia, when he was talking about the
- 12:33Speaker 3: fruit of the Spirit, he talked about the manner in
- 12:38Speaker 3: which that fruit of the Spirit is displayed is through love.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And the manner that that love is displayed is by
- 12:50Speaker 3: restoring a brother who is in a fault. And it
- 12:56Speaker 3: states that we are to carry one another's burdens.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.
- 13:07Speaker 2: But if you just joined us, you've been listening to

- 13:45Speaker 2: by Discovery House Publishers. Again, here is Richard to wrap
- 13:48Speaker 2: up today's message.
- 13:52Speaker 3: You see, there's an expression that's been used in many
- 13:55Speaker 3: other applications, and that is that you never realize what
- 14:01Speaker 3: another person is going through until you've walked a mile,
- 14:08Speaker 3: as it says, in his shoes. You don't know. And
- 14:12Speaker 3: so there's no way that we can say we're better.
- 14:16Speaker 3: There's no way that we can be conceited or puffed
- 14:19Speaker 3: up as if we're deserving of something. We have a
- 14:24Speaker 3: loving heavenly master, our heavenly father, that has forgiven us,
- 14:33Speaker 3: totally forgiven us all of our sin. We could never
- 14:38Speaker 3: accomplish that by works. We could never be good enough.
- 14:43Speaker 3: We would always fall short. And because of that, he
- 14:48Speaker 3: demonstrates his love for us by dying for us to
- 14:54Speaker 3: pay the price that we should have paid. That's why
- 14:59Speaker 3: the crucifixion of this old nature has been such a
- 15:03Speaker 3: vital part of our teaching, because that is where the
- 15:09Speaker 3: forgiveness is known. Because of our old nature, what we
- 15:15Speaker 3: would have done, what we did do, and in some
- 15:19Speaker 3: cases still do, we need forgiveness. And Jesus forgives us. Now,
- 15:28Speaker 3: he doesn't expect that we're going to turn right around
- 15:32Speaker 3: and go back into our sinful position all over again.
- 15:38Speaker 3: He expects that we're going to be counseled. and that
- 15:41Speaker 3: we're going to be loved, and we're going to be restored.
- 15:46Speaker 3: There is the answer to Paul's question in Galatians, and
- 15:53Speaker 3: it's the answer to Peter's question in the book of Matthew.
- 15:59Speaker 3: We fulfill the law of Jesus Christ, what's implanted in
- 16:06Speaker 3: our hearts, to know to forgive. And believer, it is
- 16:13Speaker 3: only through the love of God that forgiveness can be accomplished.
- 16:20Speaker 3: We need to understand that it is through his love
- 16:24Speaker 3: that forgiveness came. And it is through his love that
- 16:29Speaker 3: we give forgiveness to others. And that is today's reflection
- 16:37Speaker 3: on the word.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Thank you, Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
- 16:41Speaker 2: with the next edition of Reflections on the Word with
- 16:44Speaker 2: Richard Kaye. For Richard and the entire team, this is
- 16:47Speaker 2: Chuck Christie saying thanks for listening to this edition of
- 16:50Speaker 2: Reflections on the Word.
