Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, well it's the day after the trade deadline
- 0:02Speaker 1: and on one leg up Alex Media after you heard
- 0:06Speaker 1: Michael de Warte's take that, Yeah, if Schoolble goes to
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Dodgers, how helpful that would be to rest Altani's
- 0:13Speaker 1: arm focus on his hitting. Well maybe that's why, not
- 0:16Speaker 1: only with the superstar signing, another reason why of the
- 0:18Speaker 1: Dodgers bulsted the bullpen? But uh, the rotation. But I've
- 0:22Speaker 1: got mister Ryan Paganell, I've got lou Terminello on Terminello's
- 0:25Speaker 1: take today because boys here in New York. The PostScript
- 0:29Speaker 1: of well, we tried to get Stevenson on the as catcher,
- 0:33Speaker 1: or we tried to get you know, Adlie, We tried
- 0:35Speaker 1: to get this guy that Yankee fans didn't want to
- 0:37Speaker 1: hear it. But the maybe the blessing in disguise is
- 0:42Speaker 1: they had to just look within George Lombard Junior. Someone
- 0:44Speaker 1: said that's the third bat they acquired the trade deadline,
- 0:47Speaker 1: because he's being called up, and I want to start there.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It might look like a disappointing deadline for the Yankees
- 0:54Speaker 1: because they didn't have a catcher, but you know, what
- 0:56Speaker 1: do you guys think to me? It felt like a
- 0:58Speaker 1: bit of a dud.
- 0:59Speaker 2: What about you, guys, Oh, Alex, thank thank you guys
- 1:02Speaker 2: for having me. As always look at the catching possibilities
- 1:10Speaker 2: that were that were out there. How much of an
- 1:12Speaker 2: upgrade would that I've really made for the Yankees to
- 1:17Speaker 2: give up something, Yes, if they had gotten Adlee Rushman,
- 1:20Speaker 2: he's switching catcher, he's a very good defensive catcher.
- 1:25Speaker 1: He had.
- 1:25Speaker 2: He's on the disablest right now with left wrist inflammation.
- 1:29Speaker 2: But yeah, the Red Sox made it, made an excellent
- 1:32Speaker 2: and excellent move. There's no doubt about it. I don't
- 1:35Speaker 2: think it's, you know, a death knell to the Yankees.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The Yankees picked up a guy on Sunday in Lewis
- 1:43Speaker 2: Garcia junior. Twenty home runs, over twenty home runs, over
- 1:48Speaker 2: twenty doubles. There's only one player in the National League
- 1:52Speaker 2: who has over twenty home runs and twenty doubles, and
- 1:56Speaker 2: that's Pete Crow Armstrong, candidate for MVP in the National League.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Plus the fact Luis Scarcaie junior Leeds National League and
- 2:05Speaker 2: slugging percentage, and you saw what he did last night
- 2:08Speaker 2: hitting that two run homer to put the Yankees ahead.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So I think. I mean, yeah, he's not a great
- 2:13Speaker 2: defensive player, and he's one of these guys who may
- 2:16Speaker 2: not have a position, But I mean, I think that
- 2:18Speaker 2: was an excellent and now.
- 2:20Speaker 1: That one paid dividends because he hit a homer that
- 2:23Speaker 1: pretty much launched the Yanks back in the lead before
- 2:25Speaker 1: the bullpen blew it last night. But you know what,
- 2:28Speaker 1: forbody criticizing the non bullpen moves or whatever, I'd to say,
- 2:31Speaker 1: this bullpen's been the strongest part of the Yankee team
- 2:35Speaker 1: this year because look how many games they've held together
- 2:38Speaker 1: at two to one, one to nothing, especially over the.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Week in Chicago let alone, especially how many unsung pieces
- 2:44Speaker 3: that they had really step up in the bullpen to
- 2:46Speaker 3: the point where you didn't need a Mason Miller Trede.
- 2:49Speaker 3: You didn't need to give up the farm an hypothetical
- 2:52Speaker 3: trade for somebody like Mason Miller to stabilize the pen
- 2:55Speaker 3: for a potential World Series run. I mean, you have
- 2:57Speaker 3: a lot of unsung heroes, if you will, like Bret
- 3:00Speaker 3: Hedrick Mett legend, Paul Blackburn.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Who's actually been that twenty thousand times better since leaving
- 3:06Speaker 1: the Mets, which is you.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Can really say the same about anybody in fairness, but
- 3:09Speaker 3: that's a whole other can of worms. Then again, either way,
- 3:12Speaker 3: Paul Blackburn, he's had a defined role and it's paid
- 3:16Speaker 3: dividends for the Yankees, and I have to give them
- 3:19Speaker 3: credit where it's due for actively outlining this guy's role
- 3:22Speaker 3: because look at him, he's pitching like an absolute stud
- 3:26Speaker 3: outside of the outside of the past, and Bennar is
- 3:29Speaker 3: still doing Betnar things.
- 3:30Speaker 4: That's not really much of a question.
- 3:32Speaker 3: There, but really overall, and look, I like the Garcia
- 3:37Speaker 3: trade career year, and he could slot into the lineup
- 3:41Speaker 3: very nicely at least while Judge stand and others get healthy, right,
- 3:46Speaker 3: and the whole catching situation just very disappointing as a whole.
- 3:49Speaker 4: I definitely expected a lot more from Cashman. I'm sure
- 3:52Speaker 4: you too could.
- 3:53Speaker 1: First I did. I thought maybe they'd offer up Jones
- 3:56Speaker 1: for a catcher. That That's what I was thinking.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And then, especially because they acquired Helio Ramos from the Giants,
- 4:03Speaker 3: right adding another outfielder into the mix, you think that
- 4:05Speaker 3: would make one of those guys expendable one way or another.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Ultimately was Domingez who got on right to triple A.
- 4:12Speaker 3: So he's more or less the expendable one. But look,
- 4:15Speaker 3: they have the capital to go out and get somebody
- 4:18Speaker 3: like a Ryan Jeffers or Hunter Goodman.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I mean adly too, but thought, in my opinion, overpaid
- 4:26Speaker 4: for him.
- 4:27Speaker 1: All right, Well yeah, I think I mean that. And
- 4:29Speaker 1: and as Lou was saying, or maybe that was Don Skyle,
- 4:32Speaker 1: one of them was saying, the guy's a little broken down.
- 4:34Speaker 1: I mean, he's not the same Adelee Rutchman that we
- 4:36Speaker 1: saw years ago, so that that's kind of true to
- 4:39Speaker 1: it to that point. But Lou and Ryan, as Italian
- 4:43Speaker 1: Americans look Italian American aside, they hate on Volpie. I
- 4:48Speaker 1: never really understood, okay, because the guy was injured in
- 4:51Speaker 1: twenty five and that really screwed up his entire year
- 4:55Speaker 1: after that legendary Grand Slam. It's amazing to me how
- 4:59Speaker 1: Volpi Uh, Okay, he had his struggles, but he forgets
- 5:02Speaker 1: he had an incredible Grand Slam in that world series.
- 5:05Speaker 1: How do people forget that and just focused on all
- 5:07Speaker 1: his flaws. I don't know. I think they keep got
- 5:09Speaker 1: a bad break. He definitely did.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Ryan, go ahead, No.
- 5:13Speaker 4: He did. You're good, Louis.
- 5:15Speaker 3: He definitely did, no question about it, and it's for
- 5:18Speaker 3: the same reasons why people dog on Francisco Lindor now
- 5:22Speaker 3: these if I can bring a Mets perspective here, because
- 5:25Speaker 3: you have so many sects of the fan base, the
- 5:27Speaker 3: Mets fan base in particular that one and Frankie gone.
- 5:31Speaker 3: And look, his defense has very much been questioned, and
- 5:35Speaker 3: fairly so. I mean, he has not had the best
- 5:39Speaker 3: year in the field, at least when he's healthy. His
- 5:42Speaker 3: bat is very much still up there, and went healthy,
- 5:45Speaker 3: he could be a top ten shortstop in the league.
- 5:47Speaker 4: But the logic is the same here. I mean, Lindor
- 5:50Speaker 4: was a big reason.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Why the Mets got to the Championship Series just two
- 5:53Speaker 3: years prior, which feels like a decade ago. But it's
- 5:55Speaker 3: just crazy how much of a one to eighty that
- 5:58Speaker 3: that organization has taken since. But absolutely even then, same
- 6:01Speaker 3: argument goes for Anthony Bolpi, huge Grand Slam in the
- 6:03Speaker 3: World Series. Everybody touted him as the second coming of Jets,
- 6:07Speaker 3: grew up a Yanks fin. I believe he was at
- 6:09Speaker 3: the nine World.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Series was and he was standing against the Jeter after
- 6:12Speaker 1: that legendary Grand Slam like he was a hero that night.
- 6:15Speaker 3: And then I'm sure so many Yanks fans still wanted
- 6:18Speaker 3: to work out, but it's just the way New York
- 6:21Speaker 3: has turned on him.
- 6:23Speaker 4: As a met fan, I can relate to it.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Now, do you guys agree that because they didn't make
- 6:27Speaker 1: enough moves or enough of a splash, like, you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: the teams around them really bolstered, didn't they. Tampa Boston?
- 6:34Speaker 1: They did not.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Let me let me cut in here for a second
- 6:39Speaker 2: with Tampa, all right, the Dodgers got the best player
- 6:45Speaker 2: that was available. Okay, Now everybody's gonna say the rich
- 6:50Speaker 2: get richer. Yes, the rich got richer with the uh
- 6:53Speaker 2: with the Dodgers obtaining struggle. But as a rental and
- 7:00Speaker 2: I know the Dodgers are gonna sign them, I'd be
- 7:01Speaker 2: shocked if the Dodgers don't sign them long term at
- 7:04Speaker 2: the end of the year, but for two months. Tampa Milwaukee,
- 7:10Speaker 2: you know, aka small market teams. They've had good regular
- 7:15Speaker 2: seasons in the past. Last year, Milwaukee had the best
- 7:18Speaker 2: record in the National League, but when push came to
- 7:20Speaker 2: shove in the Championship Series, the Dodgers boat raced them
- 7:24Speaker 2: in four straight Sometimes you have to give up your
- 7:28Speaker 2: top prospect. And we don't know if these prospects are
- 7:30Speaker 2: gonna pan out. Since twenty fifteen, eighty five percent, eighty
- 7:35Speaker 2: five point four percent of prospects traded have have not
- 7:39Speaker 2: panned out. So that's a huge number. And eighty six
- 7:43Speaker 2: prospects were traded at this trade deadline, and you know it.
- 7:47Speaker 2: But for Tampa, they they don't they want they're trying
- 7:50Speaker 2: to get that new stadium built. They they should have,
- 7:54Speaker 2: they should have made that deal for or Tarik because
- 7:59Speaker 2: Sue is a difference maker. And I know apparently the
- 8:04Speaker 2: Tigers asked for his suits my day, the number one
- 8:07Speaker 2: prospect in all of baseball. But sometimes instead of being
- 8:12Speaker 2: that nice little team that gets that's always competitive, you
- 8:15Speaker 2: gotta go over the top. Same thing with Milwaukee. So
- 8:18Speaker 2: I don't blame the Dodgers of painting him now as
- 8:20Speaker 2: a rental. Now again, at the end of the year
- 8:23Speaker 2: in the off season, if the Dodgers give him sixty
- 8:27Speaker 2: million dollars a year, that's a different story. But right now,
- 8:30Speaker 2: just for these two months, Tampa Milwaukee, they let they
- 8:35Speaker 2: let their franchise.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Well seven million dollars in deferment payments.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Okay, that's two million a year salary.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, however they're gonna do it. It's still it's
- 8:46Speaker 2: they're gonna still have to pay it eventually. But Tampa
- 8:50Speaker 2: and Milwaukee, I think if I was a fan of
- 8:54Speaker 2: either one of those teams, I would be a little
- 8:56Speaker 2: let down. You got you gotta try to get it. Look,
- 9:00Speaker 2: the Knicks just broke a streak of fifty three years.
- 9:03Speaker 2: That's how long sometimes it takes to win. You win.
- 9:07Speaker 2: It's not like you win every year. So if Tampa
- 9:09Speaker 2: had won or Milwaukee had finally won, Milwaukee's never they
- 9:12Speaker 2: don't won the World Series. They've only been in one
- 9:16Speaker 2: in their history. Sometimes you just got to say, okay,
- 9:19Speaker 2: we're gonna have to give a bar our best prospect
- 9:22Speaker 2: and get this two time back to back Cy Young
- 9:26Speaker 2: Award winner, this difference maker. They didn't do it. The
- 9:30Speaker 2: Dodgers did. Like I said, this is not odd the
- 9:33Speaker 2: Dodgers for having, you know, having so much money. But
- 9:36Speaker 2: again that's the way it goes. The Dodgers got the
- 9:39Speaker 2: best player in the I have to trade that now as.
- 9:43Speaker 3: You say that, But then they also got him for
- 9:45Speaker 3: what a lot of people could argue is a very
- 9:49Speaker 3: very it's very underwhelming package there. Absolutely, I mean they
- 9:54Speaker 3: gave up I believe it was their number five, number seven,
- 9:57Speaker 3: and number seventeen prospects.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Even then, that's been a little bit generous. Uh well,
- 10:02Speaker 4: if you take it to a river.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Ryan is on recovering from Tommy john or elbow surgery
- 10:09Speaker 2: and he's twenty seven years old. I don't know what
- 10:12Speaker 2: they're doing. And then here they are. They're two and
- 10:15Speaker 2: a half games out of a playoff spot. Yeah, I know,
- 10:16Speaker 2: there's six seven games under five hundred. You know, so
- 10:18Speaker 2: many of these teams are really phony playoff contenders, but
- 10:24Speaker 2: the numbers that two and a half games out. They
- 10:26Speaker 2: not only trade Scruble, they also traded Casey Maes, Who's
- 10:29Speaker 2: going to be a fat shocking.
- 10:32Speaker 1: And that. I mean, look, if you're a Tiger fan,
- 10:34Speaker 1: you're kind of defeated right now because your two best
- 10:37Speaker 1: pitchers are gone and you.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Paid from ber Valdez instead of uh you know, you're yes, undoubted.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Peace and you and you also watching a kid Connor
- 10:47Speaker 1: McGonagall I think that's his name, Kevin McGonagall, for that
- 10:51Speaker 1: what sevent eight year deal, I don't know, instead of
- 10:53Speaker 1: focusing on school. It was a mess and I could
- 10:56Speaker 1: see how he would want on Detroit now. I don't
- 10:59Speaker 1: know if you guys know that. Well, you know this
- 11:00Speaker 1: because I send you on Sunday. Of course, I think
- 11:03Speaker 1: he's gonna miss the start per Ryan, or missed the weekend.
- 11:06Speaker 1: But the Dodgers go to Detroit later in this in
- 11:09Speaker 1: the summer in August. I mean that would be fun.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that very much would be especially because Scooble
- 11:16Speaker 3: He's supposed to make his first start in Dodger Blue
- 11:18Speaker 3: tonight in Wrigley against the Cubs, and and I was
- 11:22Speaker 3: telling you this, Alex, assuming that he starts, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 3: every fifth game, that would put him in line to
- 11:29Speaker 3: pitch the game right before the Dodgers go to Detroit,
- 11:34Speaker 3: which I believe their host. They're in Atlanta, right before
- 11:37Speaker 3: the Tigers series. So that would put him in line
- 11:40Speaker 3: to not even pitch in that series. I mean, barring
- 11:42Speaker 3: a sudden shift in the rotation or anything like that,
- 11:45Speaker 3: or a start.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Plays games with his rotation sometimes, especially when he's up
- 11:50Speaker 1: eleven and a half half game.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Well, I mean that's pretty easy too, when your rotation
- 11:54Speaker 3: now consists of Yamamoto, Otani, Glass, now Blake's now, I mean, granted,
- 12:01Speaker 3: he's hasn't really done that much this year. But still
- 12:03Speaker 3: blake'snow top to your arm went healthy, and then you
- 12:07Speaker 3: add in Scoople in the mix, on top of other
- 12:09Speaker 3: depth pieces like Emma Chian. I mean, you have the
- 12:12Speaker 3: flexibility at least if you're Dave Roberts, to be able
- 12:15Speaker 3: to play a couple of games here there, maybe throwing
- 12:17Speaker 3: an open ear if that's what you feel like doing.
- 12:19Speaker 3: I mean, I mean, they can really do a lot
- 12:22Speaker 3: with their pitching staff now now that they have as
- 12:26Speaker 3: Tark Schooble in the fold. I mean, they could have
- 12:28Speaker 3: still done it even without him, but it just makes
- 12:31Speaker 3: that all the more fun to manage if you're Dave Roberts.
- 12:33Speaker 1: You know what's amazing after the deadline on Saturday, Like
- 12:36Speaker 1: that Saturday night trade made about as much noise as
- 12:39Speaker 1: Luca going to going to the Lakers, although the Luca
- 12:43Speaker 1: deal was even more.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Shocking happened on a Saturday night.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I know, right. However, my point being here is that
- 12:52Speaker 1: after that Traders made They're like, there's gonna be a
- 12:54Speaker 1: lockout in twenty seven. I am still not convinced that
- 12:58Speaker 1: of that, because if the Dodgers lose the World Series
- 13:02Speaker 1: with all the stack they have or don't even make
- 13:04Speaker 1: it the World Series.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I think the key here is the Dodgers don't win
- 13:08Speaker 1: the World Series. That's the only way to avoid a lockout.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I don't think this trade deadline necessarily makes that official.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I don't know. I just I can't.
- 13:16Speaker 4: But would it make a difference at this point?
- 13:18Speaker 3: Now, That's the one question I have, because for me,
- 13:21Speaker 3: it seems like it might be a little too little,
- 13:23Speaker 3: too late, regardless of how the Dodgers fare in the playoffs.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I mean, we're forgetting too.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I mean, they have spent billions on player payroll alone,
- 13:34Speaker 3: whether or not half of that is defern or now,
- 13:36Speaker 3: they still spend damn near a billion dollars in payroll
- 13:40Speaker 3: and they're just coming off of back to back World
- 13:42Speaker 3: Series championships. Yeah, I mean there's that whole dynasty aspect
- 13:46Speaker 3: of it. And I mean, let's not forget how much
- 13:49Speaker 3: they were spending in the twenty tens after the mc
- 13:52Speaker 3: courts sold and.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Even in the early twenty twenties when they won the
- 13:56Speaker 4: COVID ring.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yeah, which is him and I still don't think is
- 13:59Speaker 1: the real ring. I'm just I'm just look.
- 14:02Speaker 2: The point I'm not going to make, but I know,
- 14:04Speaker 2: I understand you.
- 14:05Speaker 1: But by the way that that COVID year is another
- 14:07Speaker 1: reason why I think we saw the groundwork laid for
- 14:10Speaker 1: a lockout now, because in twenty twenty me and LU
- 14:16Speaker 1: talk about it extensively all their anyway, they were definitely
- 14:21Speaker 1: pushing the limits. MLB was with MLBPA and MLBPA are
- 14:24Speaker 1: not like that. Oh there's a lot of friction there,
- 14:28Speaker 1: and I think that's leading into what's happening next year exactly.
- 14:30Speaker 3: And you could say the same thing back in twenty twenty.
- 14:33Speaker 3: You could say the same thing now, it's an unfair system.
- 14:35Speaker 3: What the Dodgers are doing is perfectly legal. They're just
- 14:38Speaker 3: the ones that are the best at exploiting. And you're
- 14:42Speaker 3: the big The biggest thing now is I respect that?
- 14:46Speaker 4: Well, you're the big.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Thing now is well, let's blame the small market teams
- 14:48Speaker 1: for not being in competition. But if the small market
- 14:51Speaker 1: teams can compete for these guys, Uh, there is an issue,
- 14:54Speaker 1: there isn't there? Or am I saying, am I signing
- 14:57Speaker 1: socialists right now?
- 14:59Speaker 2: I mean no, no, no, And you're right, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 2: obviously socialism in everyday American life is horrendous, But when
- 15:09Speaker 2: it comes to sports. Every team has to have to
- 15:13Speaker 2: have a league that's interesting to watch, has to have
- 15:19Speaker 2: a legitimate fair bite at the apple, and again we
- 15:25Speaker 2: saw it again. I there's no better team. There's no
- 15:28Speaker 2: team that did this better for thirty five years and
- 15:30Speaker 2: they're still doing it not as badly as they used to.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Is the Yankees. They're the ones who thrived on it. Uh,
- 15:37Speaker 2: you know, for.
- 15:37Speaker 1: For goodness sake, George Salmon who created this thing when
- 15:39Speaker 1: he signed Reggie Jackson as a free agent.
- 15:42Speaker 2: I mean, and and cat absolutely uh Thanksgiving, thanksgivving New
- 15:48Speaker 2: Year's Eve nineteen seventy four to seventy five. But anyway,
- 15:55Speaker 2: like I said, the Dodgers getting scruballed at the deadline,
- 15:58Speaker 2: that's okay. Every already had a chance to get him.
- 16:01Speaker 1: For two months.
- 16:01Speaker 2: They owe them nine million dollars. I don't care if
- 16:04Speaker 2: it's the If it's the New York Mets, the New
- 16:06Speaker 2: York Yankees, the Los Angeles Dodgers, or or Tampa Bay.
- 16:11Speaker 2: They can cover nine million for two months, then Tampa
- 16:15Speaker 2: Bay's not going to sign them. It's like Sabathia when
- 16:18Speaker 2: when the Brewers, the Brewers got Sabathia, who was great
- 16:21Speaker 2: for them the last two and a half months of
- 16:23Speaker 2: the season. Now they didn't they didn't win a playoff series. Uh,
- 16:26Speaker 2: you know.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And to your point, aren't the raising of Parolta's rest
- 16:29Speaker 1: of his contract for two and.
- 16:30Speaker 2: A half millions? But Parolta put on a Parolta they
- 16:34Speaker 2: is under three million bucks. Parolta was only making eight
- 16:38Speaker 2: million dollars for the whole season right now, the rest
- 16:41Speaker 2: of his contract is under three million.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Uh.
- 16:45Speaker 2: And and Parolta and Scrubold, that's like comparing a ham
- 16:49Speaker 2: sandwich to Filet mignon.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Yeah, but it is.
- 16:53Speaker 4: But it's valid logic though.
- 16:56Speaker 1: It's still a big deal because the Rays actually get
- 16:58Speaker 1: better with Parolta. I think anybody I know, I mean,
- 17:02Speaker 1: you mean he'll get better coaching there. I don't think
- 17:04Speaker 1: that true can be debated right there, Let's go to
- 17:06Speaker 1: your orange and blue. Because the one orange and blue
- 17:10Speaker 1: team wins a championship, the Knicks, and then a month later,
- 17:15Speaker 1: a month and a half later, the other orange of
- 17:17Speaker 1: blue tea sells the whole teams.
- 17:18Speaker 2: It's like, well, I can't remember that orange and bluetin
- 17:21Speaker 2: had finally won, had fifty had many many years of
- 17:24Speaker 2: absolute disgraceful seasons.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And I did the math on Saturday with the fortieth anniversary.
- 17:29Speaker 1: There's thirteen years to match that record, guys, So you know,
- 17:32Speaker 1: let's let's hope it does that that doesn't happen.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Let's hope that that changes soon. But again we don't
- 17:38Speaker 2: know that. I think, yes, they sell off of their best,
- 17:43Speaker 2: their three best most effective relief pitchers.
- 17:48Speaker 1: It's isn't it.
- 17:50Speaker 2: It's it's well, it's telling well, rarely you got you
- 17:52Speaker 2: have to you have to uh trade him because you
- 17:57Speaker 2: can resign him. Even though usually guys don't re after
- 18:00Speaker 2: they get they get traded. I know, uh Chapman did
- 18:04Speaker 2: and in two thousand when the Mets got Mike bought
- 18:07Speaker 2: it from the Orioles. At the end of the World
- 18:09Speaker 2: Series he went back to the Orioles. But it usually
- 18:11Speaker 2: doesn't happen. But I mean, as great as Brooks Rail
- 18:14Speaker 2: he's been for the Mets, he was, you know, he
- 18:17Speaker 2: was a kid. Contract was over. My problem is with
- 18:20Speaker 2: Luke Weaver. They had him under contract to the end
- 18:22Speaker 2: of the end of next year and they let him go. Now,
- 18:25Speaker 2: I don't know about these these prospects that they got
- 18:28Speaker 2: who they're gonna be. But let's look at the let's go,
- 18:31Speaker 2: let's look at these prospects. Who they got. We have
- 18:34Speaker 2: no idea if they if they're going to make it
- 18:38Speaker 2: or not. Uh, let's look at what what the Yankees
- 18:41Speaker 2: did last night after the game, sending their starting shortstop
- 18:46Speaker 2: to triple A, sending the Mingas to triple I remember
- 18:50Speaker 2: three four years ago, didn't the Mingas was supposed to
- 18:52Speaker 2: be the next big thing?
- 18:55Speaker 1: He was or something I heard something.
- 18:58Speaker 2: I mean, he was he was gonna be the next
- 19:01Speaker 2: big thing, you know. And I'm gonna make a prediction
- 19:04Speaker 2: unless there's an injury to to uh Lombard or on
- 19:10Speaker 2: the slum board, is totally overmatch, which I probably don't
- 19:13Speaker 2: think he is, or else they want to put him up,
- 19:16Speaker 2: bring him up or another infielder. I don't think. I think, Well,
- 19:19Speaker 2: we've never gone to see Anthony Volpi in the Yankee
- 19:22Speaker 2: uniform again, and Alex, I agree with you. I don't
- 19:25Speaker 2: know what all the crapping on Volpi is. I mean,
- 19:29Speaker 2: I don't watch every Yankee game, but I but I
- 19:32Speaker 2: can't say when I watched this kid, he's overmatched. We
- 19:35Speaker 2: were talking the other day, me and you and uh,
- 19:39Speaker 2: he knocked in a run in Wrigley Field. It was
- 19:41Speaker 2: it was a game. It was the Friday game. I
- 19:44Speaker 2: believe it was. Oh no, it was against the White
- 19:46Speaker 2: Sox since they spent the week in Chicago. It was
- 19:49Speaker 2: against the White Sox, and he came up with a
- 19:52Speaker 2: runner at third, less than two out, drove the run in.
- 19:56Speaker 2: And that was the ninth time in ten at Batch
- 19:59Speaker 2: that he came up with less than two men out
- 20:01Speaker 2: and drove in a run. That's incredible.
- 20:04Speaker 1: No, he was hitting. He was one of the few
- 20:06Speaker 1: that was hitting on that team up until the weekend.
- 20:09Speaker 1: So I don't know. I think the logic is, oh
- 20:12Speaker 1: my god, the back page are going to be awful tomorrow,
- 20:14Speaker 1: so let's make a splash and let's bring a Lombard.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I don't want to.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Say for the hell of it, but it does feel like, no, no,
- 20:21Speaker 2: it's not natural the hell of it. They think Lombard
- 20:24Speaker 2: is ready, they want to brought him up. But I
- 20:26Speaker 2: also don't tasting too, I really do. I'm sorry you
- 20:31Speaker 2: don't bring him up in the middle of at the
- 20:32Speaker 2: beginning of August, just just as a look. See, unless
- 20:37Speaker 2: he is totally overmatched, he's going to be your starting
- 20:41Speaker 2: shortstop come game oneto the playoffs.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Well, look, but everybody was injured back in April and May.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Everyone was clamoring for Spencer, and I think that was
- 20:49Speaker 1: the right move to bring Spencer up, by the way,
- 20:52Speaker 1: not for nothing, But what's about Cabrera. I mean, I'm
- 20:54Speaker 1: sorry that kid should be giving another chance. And that's
- 20:57Speaker 1: not just because I know him a little bit off
- 21:00Speaker 1: the field, but I also believe he should be give
- 21:03Speaker 1: him another chance. I know he struggled, I know that
- 21:05Speaker 1: injury in May of twenty five was awful, but he
- 21:07Speaker 1: still deserves his reps. But he still deserves his reps
- 21:10Speaker 1: to be up here. I don't understand this.
- 21:11Speaker 2: But again, if if do you think the if he
- 21:15Speaker 2: wasn't able to help the Yankees, he'd be up here
- 21:19Speaker 2: if he was able to help the Yanks.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Well, now let me ask you this little because you
- 21:22Speaker 1: follow the NL a little closer than maybe I do. Here,
- 21:25Speaker 1: we know Ramos. I feel like, well we all saw
- 21:28Speaker 1: Garcia Junior. We also saw a bit of Ramos on
- 21:30Speaker 1: the opening series in San Francisco. But I mean, it
- 21:33Speaker 1: seems like he's a better year than he usually does.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Is that what's happening with him.
- 21:38Speaker 2: A couple of years ago. He went He went on
- 21:40Speaker 2: like a six week tare So that was, you know
- 21:47Speaker 2: for the Giants historic. Now again he's he's a good
- 21:53Speaker 2: right handed hitter. They need a right handed bat. He's
- 21:57Speaker 2: not a great defensive player, but you know, the Yankees
- 22:02Speaker 2: seen the Yankees scene not to care that much about defense,
- 22:06Speaker 2: so you know, we'll see what happens. I don't think
- 22:10Speaker 2: that I don't think it was a bad move getting Ramos,
- 22:13Speaker 2: and I don't know why the Washington Nationals gave up
- 22:18Speaker 2: Louis Garcia Junior unless their scouts see something and say, hey,
- 22:23Speaker 2: the guys having a career year, He's going to be
- 22:25Speaker 2: a one year wonder. He's going to be a Mark
- 22:27Speaker 2: Ventos type who had that great year two years ago
- 22:31Speaker 2: and has done nothing since. I don't know. I'm not
- 22:33Speaker 2: a scout, you know what I'm saying. But it just
- 22:36Speaker 2: when I saw that the Yankees got him, and even
- 22:39Speaker 2: the day before when they said that Garcia Junior was
- 22:43Speaker 2: on a potential trade block, I said to myself, hm hmm,
- 22:48Speaker 2: that that raised my eyebrows a little bit that why
- 22:53Speaker 2: would this happen so well, I think it was I
- 22:57Speaker 2: think the Yankees made a good move with Garcia.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Now, but me and dom Scala, who I've had on
- 23:02Speaker 1: before and as a frequent guest with Arthur, I want
- 23:04Speaker 1: to tell you this all fairy talking about this and
- 23:06Speaker 1: I I don't know. I don't move McMahon out of the third.
- 23:10Speaker 1: I just you gotta keep him man at third. He's
- 23:12Speaker 1: a great glove and so what you're gonna have a
- 23:14Speaker 1: struggling jazz at second, I guess. And maybe Cavey and
- 23:17Speaker 1: left or right Helio were almost the left. I think
- 23:19Speaker 1: that's what it might end up being tonight.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I think that's what it's gonna be.
- 23:22Speaker 4: But I agree with you.
- 23:23Speaker 2: The reason they got McMahon they knew he wasn't a
- 23:26Speaker 2: big time here. Uh, he's a terrific fielder.
- 23:31Speaker 1: No, Broches was that good too at the hot corner.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I remember Broches being that good at the hot corner
- 23:36Speaker 1: as well.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I think, so you know, was a clutch guy too.
- 23:40Speaker 2: He was a touch player.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Yeah, World Series MVP anyone, Yes, right exactly in ninety eight.
- 23:47Speaker 1: So I don't know. I think it's gonna be interesting,
- 23:49Speaker 1: all right it' speaking of World champions I have to say,
- 23:52Speaker 1: would you both disagree or agree with me that this
- 23:55Speaker 1: is the month of Doc and darryl Okay. So last Saturday,
- 23:59Speaker 1: they're both there at the eighty six World Series, and boys,
- 24:03Speaker 1: as Ryan said to me, the Mets actually gave a
- 24:05Speaker 1: damn this year. They had the whole nice entrance for
- 24:08Speaker 1: the guys. It was all like pump and circumstances.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Agree with you, guys. The Mets always put on a
- 24:16Speaker 2: good ceremony for their guys.
- 24:19Speaker 4: It's just unfortunate though that.
- 24:21Speaker 3: And I've read the official attendance number from Saturday, Only
- 24:24Speaker 3: about thirty thousand showed up, which it goes to show
- 24:27Speaker 3: how much apathy that the fans have had this season
- 24:30Speaker 3: at the front office and at the ownership. And you know,
- 24:32Speaker 3: there's a lot of days where it's tough to fault
- 24:35Speaker 3: them for them. I mean, not even in the eighty
- 24:37Speaker 3: six Mets could produce a sellout in twenty twenty Prix,
- 24:40Speaker 3: which is a shame because looking back at the thirty
- 24:43Speaker 3: year anniversary twenty sixteen, I mean, they were just coming
- 24:46Speaker 3: off a World Series round the year before, made the
- 24:48Speaker 3: playoffs that year too, it were still very much at
- 24:52Speaker 3: thrown out.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Yeah, same game, but they fuilled the house for that time.
- 25:00Speaker 2: This is forty years ago, Ryan, what you said. Yes,
- 25:04Speaker 2: this has been a very apathetic fan base this year.
- 25:08Speaker 2: They're they're met fatigued. They've been they've been slapped around
- 25:14Speaker 2: thinking that Uncle Stevie was going to be the savior,
- 25:19Speaker 2: and well, well again, So the worst free agent starning,
- 25:24Speaker 2: as I said to Alice a couple of weeks ago
- 25:26Speaker 2: on his show, was the worst free agent signing in
- 25:29Speaker 2: that's history, and he still has a chance of turning around,
- 25:33Speaker 2: is David Stearns. But the other thing is that was
- 25:36Speaker 2: forty years ago. I want, I mean, I want. I
- 25:39Speaker 2: wasn't at the game, but I watched the ceremony. Now
- 25:41Speaker 2: I'm an old guy. I'm an old guy, so I'm
- 25:44Speaker 2: not kno good old guys. But they looked so old
- 25:47Speaker 2: as they were introduced.
- 25:49Speaker 1: The chair now because of the heart attack, I guess
- 25:52Speaker 1: you have a wheelchair.
- 25:54Speaker 2: So yeah, if you're under forty seven years old, forty seven,
- 26:01Speaker 2: forty six years old, you can't relate. You can't connect
- 26:04Speaker 2: or relate with the eighty six Mets. I could. I
- 26:07Speaker 2: went to twenty games that year. I was at Game six,
- 26:10Speaker 2: I was at Game seven, I was at Game one
- 26:14Speaker 2: of the World Series. I was at those as the
- 26:16Speaker 2: games against the Astros at Shay. I could connect with
- 26:20Speaker 2: those guys, but most people, most people can't.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I think Darling would be a little more celebrated if
- 26:28Speaker 1: he didn't write that dumb book about how bad that team.
- 26:30Speaker 1: That was very weird. Anyway, I'd say, though, Strawberry has
- 26:34Speaker 1: become a legend because of what he did in New
- 26:36Speaker 1: York period, which leads me to my next question. Doesn't
- 26:39Speaker 1: this feel like the month of Doc and Daryl from
- 26:41Speaker 1: last week? They do the Mets this year, they're gonna
- 26:44Speaker 1: be honored, I think for thirty years on the ninety sixteen.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I mean I was a little little guy. You were
- 26:50Speaker 1: and around, but Lou, you were there for that lower
- 26:53Speaker 1: of ten years. I mean, Darryl and Dock kind of
- 26:55Speaker 1: ruled New York in that ten year span, didn't they.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Well, this is the thing, nobody, nobody will loved watching
- 27:05Speaker 2: Doc pitch more than me and my buddies. I mean,
- 27:08Speaker 2: after work we would leave the NETS office and we
- 27:12Speaker 2: would we would, especially if it was on a Friday
- 27:15Speaker 2: drive out to Shay and I think we saw a
- 27:17Speaker 2: fourth and throw fourth straight shoutouts one time we went.
- 27:21Speaker 2: We always went. He was, It was electrifying. Shay Stain
- 27:25Speaker 2: was electrifying. That was the great eighty four to ninety
- 27:28Speaker 2: was the greatest period in that history. But they only
- 27:30Speaker 2: won one World Series. They only went to one World Series.
- 27:34Speaker 2: And as much as I love I love Daryl with
- 27:36Speaker 2: that beautiful swing, but the reason they only went, in
- 27:40Speaker 2: my opinion, one of the reasons, it wasn't the only reason.
- 27:43Speaker 2: So I want to be unfair. Here is the problems
- 27:46Speaker 2: that Daryl and Doc. The personal problems that Daryl and
- 27:50Speaker 2: Doc had that coused that team from being legendary, dynastic.
- 27:57Speaker 2: They were the best team in eighty five, they had
- 27:59Speaker 2: some injury, they were the best team in eighty seven,
- 28:02Speaker 2: they lost their whole pitching stiff. They were as good,
- 28:05Speaker 2: if not bad in the Ags and eighty eight and
- 28:07Speaker 2: they got upset by the Dodgers. Yeah is this I mean,
- 28:11Speaker 2: we could talk about this for five hours.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Eighty eight was really the chance they could have done
- 28:17Speaker 1: in a second one in as many years, I say.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Well, they could have done Yeah, I mean remember again,
- 28:24Speaker 2: remember about remember never regular season results don't matter. The
- 28:29Speaker 2: Mets beat the Dodgers ten out eleven, and then lost
- 28:31Speaker 2: them four games to three, and the Mets were so
- 28:33Speaker 2: much better than the Dodgers. It was sickening. And they
- 28:36Speaker 2: lost four games to three. They beat her shides are
- 28:39Speaker 2: in the first game and her shides are never lost.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Amazing. Well, you know, and and someone made a good
- 28:46Speaker 1: point about that eighties team, and well Daryl actually did
- 28:49Speaker 1: that they should retire Gary Carter. Now, look, the younger
- 28:53Speaker 1: kids may not know, but Gary Carter had the brain
- 28:55Speaker 1: cancer and that really oh yeah, that was That's how
- 28:59Speaker 1: he passed. That doesn't mean we shouldn't honor himself.
- 29:01Speaker 2: I love that.
- 29:02Speaker 1: By the way, his kid looks just like him. It's
- 29:04Speaker 1: kind of wild to me ow Garrett DJ DJ Carter
- 29:07Speaker 1: looks just like him. But I mean, maybe darro Stroberre
- 29:11Speaker 1: has a point. They should retire number eight if they're
- 29:12Speaker 1: going to retire these.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Number thousand percent.
- 29:14Speaker 3: And I would argue, Alex and Lou the perfect and
- 29:20Speaker 3: granted his number eight should have already been retired long ago,
- 29:24Speaker 3: but if anything, the perfect time where you could have
- 29:27Speaker 3: righted some wrongs from the past and retired his number
- 29:30Speaker 3: eight was at that forty year ceremony. And look, the
- 29:34Speaker 3: Mets has been no stranger to retiring numbers. Kind of
- 29:37Speaker 3: by surprise before. I mean, just look at four years
- 29:39Speaker 3: ago when they finally righted the wrong of will Yeah
- 29:44Speaker 3: of Willie Mays, when they accidentally reissued his jersey number two.
- 29:49Speaker 4: I believe it was Calvin Tworff.
- 29:50Speaker 3: He has hided two in nineteen ninety, they only played
- 29:53Speaker 3: anful of games for the Mets, accidentally brought it back
- 29:56Speaker 3: in a commission.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Then Ricky had it, but he joined the Mets and
- 30:00Speaker 4: officially got unretired.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Then it officially got retired at Old Timer's Day in
- 30:05Speaker 3: twenty two, which I believe was one of Willie Mays's
- 30:07Speaker 3: last public appearance as at Citi Field. But then also
- 30:10Speaker 3: with the whole Nick Morribido debacle in May, where he
- 30:13Speaker 3: was the first Met since Carter to get reissued The
- 30:17Speaker 3: number eight were for one game before switching to number
- 30:20Speaker 3: fifty five, and there was just so much of an
- 30:22Speaker 3: uproar in the fan base.
- 30:24Speaker 2: That's the first time many guys won number seventeen before
- 30:28Speaker 2: they finally retired.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Oh that too, and I believe that Peace was the
- 30:31Speaker 3: last one to wear it. But and even then, I've
- 30:34Speaker 3: been saying this since twenty twelve. They should have retired
- 30:36Speaker 3: it at that opening day but you know, I'm not
- 30:40Speaker 3: affiliated with the organization really.
- 30:42Speaker 4: So I'm not that I have much say it.
- 30:43Speaker 3: And it would have been the perfect is that it
- 30:45Speaker 3: And I would have said, it's just better later than
- 30:48Speaker 3: ever if they decided to raise number eight.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Right then and there, right and you know, you know
- 30:52Speaker 1: it was doing really well and it's still affiliated. But
- 30:55Speaker 1: I could tell now with Beltran's number retirement coming up, see,
- 30:59Speaker 1: I think it's PR person. Jay did an amazing job,
- 31:02Speaker 1: but he really couldn't be in that position where he
- 31:04Speaker 1: is now to recommend retiring numbers. I mean, since he
- 31:07Speaker 1: took over the alumni department, look at what he's accomplished
- 31:10Speaker 1: there as much as he has accomplished men's.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Pr You're you're absolutely right. I mean he got Kusman's
- 31:16Speaker 2: number retired. Kuzman, Jerry Kouzman numbers should have be should
- 31:20Speaker 2: have been retired two years after he retired from anjor
- 31:24Speaker 2: league baseball. He was that important to the Mets. Uh
- 31:28Speaker 2: and Jay got that done. And yes, Jay is the
- 31:32Speaker 2: mover and shaker of getting these numbers retired. Strawberry's number,
- 31:37Speaker 2: Goodin's number, and again, I love the guys. I love
- 31:41Speaker 2: I love Strawberry and Goodin. But I still have that
- 31:44Speaker 2: as that other part of me that said, these guys
- 31:46Speaker 2: with their issues held the Mets back from from being,
- 31:50Speaker 2: like I said, dynasty team.
- 31:52Speaker 1: And as much as they are great people, they also
- 31:55Speaker 1: affiliate with the Yankees whenever they can too. So it's
- 31:57Speaker 1: very interesting how they relate.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Again fail with me. Let's face it, Dwight Gooden didn't
- 32:03Speaker 2: even make the playoff roster for the ninety six Yankees.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Correct, I guess you're right.
- 32:08Speaker 3: I don't read it not No, because it was Kenny
- 32:10Speaker 3: Rogers starting every fourth game in that rotation. Yeah, and
- 32:12Speaker 3: I don't believe that came out of the bullpen in
- 32:14Speaker 3: any of those games.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Yeah, No, he wasn't on. He wasn't on the postseason roster.
- 32:18Speaker 2: So again, remember, as much as I know Alex Love
- 32:21Speaker 2: loves mister Steinbrener, mister Steinbrener had this craw in his mind.
- 32:25Speaker 2: I'm gonna anytime there was an eighty six met that
- 32:28Speaker 2: was available, whether he was still effective or not, I'm
- 32:32Speaker 2: gonna jump on him. And you can go right down
- 32:34Speaker 2: the line. Yes, Strawberry did have he did contribute to
- 32:40Speaker 2: to the Yankees. No, there's no doubt about it. I
- 32:42Speaker 2: think one year he twenty six, twenty six home runs,
- 32:46Speaker 2: but that was that was a mister Steinberner.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Thing, you know.
- 32:52Speaker 2: That's why. Why do you think Tim McCarver was their
- 32:54Speaker 2: announcer for two years?
- 32:56Speaker 1: That's right. How about how about the way Kenny Singleton
- 32:59Speaker 1: was like hired by Simon Ornabe and he was an
- 33:02Speaker 1: Oreo guy. You know, it's very interesting those type of things.
- 33:05Speaker 1: By the way, its being of well, we're talking about
- 33:08Speaker 1: inter city right now, but interdivisional trades also happened.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Very strange, Alex, I agree with you that one.
- 33:14Speaker 1: I don't understand a lot of them well, and Cardinal
- 33:19Speaker 1: fans are very upset that they traded a couple guys,
- 33:22Speaker 1: the Brewers, who are in the middle of a playoff race.
- 33:25Speaker 1: I don't like it either, Like I think, to trade
- 33:28Speaker 1: in division just just it bothers me for sure, and.
- 33:31Speaker 3: It definitely did with the whole getting back to Brooks
- 33:34Speaker 3: Raley too. That definitely bothered me about a little bit
- 33:38Speaker 3: about the uh wull Brooks Rally trade. But the more
- 33:41Speaker 3: I think about it, the more you just think, well,
- 33:44Speaker 3: does it really matter because the Mets aren't going anywhere anyway?
- 33:48Speaker 3: And look, if you if you have the chance to
- 33:51Speaker 3: recoup some sort of value for probably one of your
- 33:55Speaker 3: better relievers of the twenty twenties, especially since there's no
- 33:59Speaker 3: guarantees that he would resign, you do it.
- 34:01Speaker 4: And I believe.
- 34:02Speaker 3: I saw the statistic actually yesterday right after he got traded,
- 34:06Speaker 3: where if I recall he had he has the second
- 34:11Speaker 3: lowest bullpen era of any met all time that has
- 34:16Speaker 3: made at least one hundred appearances for the team.
- 34:19Speaker 4: And I believe, and I could be wrong.
- 34:22Speaker 3: The second the lowest, I believe, was Billy Wagner who
- 34:28Speaker 3: had the era, or if not, he was just ahead
- 34:30Speaker 3: of Billy Wagner. But he finishes his MET career either
- 34:34Speaker 3: way two point zero eight e er, which is just insane.
- 34:40Speaker 3: And I mean, there's definitely a bit of a legacy
- 34:43Speaker 3: for him as one of the more underappreciated MET relievers
- 34:46Speaker 3: of the twenty twenties, especially because he was overshadowed by
- 34:49Speaker 3: the likes of Edwin Diaz and Heck, for better or
- 34:52Speaker 3: for worse, even Devin Williams and Luke Weaver.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Luke Weaver was spectacular. I have no idea why.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Oh and by the way, Addison Reid has the lowest
- 35:02Speaker 3: DRA in team history minimum one hundred appearances with two
- 35:06Speaker 3: point zero ninety R Brooks Rayley two point three to one,
- 35:09Speaker 3: and then Billy Wagner two point three seven.
- 35:11Speaker 1: You know, I wonder if Wagner got his number in
- 35:13Speaker 1: the rafters. I want, I want to ask you this, Louis,
- 35:16Speaker 1: because I don't know if people are listening for the
- 35:17Speaker 1: first time to you, but please rail on the way
- 35:23Speaker 1: they handled Tom sever because I know you're still very
- 35:25Speaker 1: disgusted by that. Years later. I mean, they retired his
- 35:28Speaker 1: number at Shade, but if they're gonna build a statue
- 35:30Speaker 1: of him, build it. Well he's alive, right, I mean,
- 35:33Speaker 1: that was the whole thing.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Well, yeah, they should. They should have built it while
- 35:36Speaker 2: he was alive. When they retired his number on in
- 35:39Speaker 2: July of nineteen eighty eight, that was, you know, two
- 35:43Speaker 2: years after the first well actually one year after he retired.
- 35:46Speaker 2: He tried to come back in the middle of eighty
- 35:48Speaker 2: seven with the Mets, but he just couldn't do it anymore.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Let's not forget too that the will Pons and Doubleday,
- 35:55Speaker 3: they willingly gave him up in one of the uh
- 35:59Speaker 3: dispersed little drafts I think or five.
- 36:02Speaker 2: That's on some craft. That's on Frank Cash. And that's
- 36:06Speaker 2: not on the owners. That's on Frank cashon who didn't
- 36:09Speaker 2: think that anybody wait, I don' would have.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Been cool to see him as part of the eighty sixteen.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh, Frank Cash and thought that nobody would
- 36:19Speaker 2: select him because he because he was thirty eight years old,
- 36:22Speaker 2: the White Sox did. He had two very good years
- 36:25Speaker 2: for the.
- 36:25Speaker 1: White Side and you were at three hundred win where
- 36:27Speaker 1: he always added.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Three hundreds win at Yankee Stadium. He went all away
- 36:33Speaker 2: and it was an amazing day at Yankee Stadium and
- 36:38Speaker 2: uh um, yeah, No, he's Cash and he made a mistake.
- 36:43Speaker 2: And I I forgot who the Mets protected. Who the
- 36:47Speaker 2: Mets protected and they left unprotected. Oh, I gotta find
- 36:52Speaker 2: that out. I I it's on It's on the tip
- 36:56Speaker 2: of my tongue. But yeah, wow was it? Yeah?
- 37:01Speaker 3: Ron Gardener, higher Wes Gardner, who I don't think ever
- 37:04Speaker 3: played in the big leagues, and Craig swan h those
- 37:07Speaker 3: are the guys who were protected over Tom Seaver in
- 37:10Speaker 3: the And it was the eighty four free agent Compensation Draft.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's through that rule five thing, that U five
- 37:17Speaker 2: draft but I didn't. I just can't remember who it was,
- 37:23Speaker 2: but it was just it's just unbelievable. But yeah, and
- 37:27Speaker 2: the status should have gone up way way earlier, but
- 37:31Speaker 2: it's there now. And uh, you know, he's the greatest
- 37:34Speaker 2: player in franchise history. And what you know, the thing is,
- 37:37Speaker 2: we need another We need somebody to pass them, which
- 37:39Speaker 2: is gonna be very hot because he was so fantastic,
- 37:41Speaker 2: But we need another player like that. And I have
- 37:47Speaker 2: no idea what Stearns is gonna do. We after trading
- 37:51Speaker 2: all these guys yesterday. I mean, obviously this is almost
- 37:56Speaker 2: like a way of tanking. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, because
- 38:01Speaker 2: not that they're tanking for a draft pick or anything.
- 38:05Speaker 2: It's just you're tanking for prospects. Like I said earlier
- 38:08Speaker 2: in the you know, in the in the podcast, eighty
- 38:11Speaker 2: five percent of them don't pan out. So you know,
- 38:14Speaker 2: it's it's just like shooting, shooting in the dark. But
- 38:19Speaker 2: we'll see what happens. We have no idea what the
- 38:21Speaker 2: Mexican look like next year because we don't know if
- 38:24Speaker 2: there's going to be a lockout or not. With the
- 38:27Speaker 2: only big name free agent is Struble. Yeah, I mean,
- 38:31Speaker 2: and he's probably gonna sign with the Dodgers. I would
- 38:34Speaker 2: assume the Dodgers aren't going to get out bid. He
- 38:38Speaker 2: comes from Arizona, so if that's a telltale sign, if
- 38:45Speaker 2: he wants to be close to home.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Saturday, if you know, I was wandering around, as you
- 38:50Speaker 1: guys know, I was wandering around the stadium, got to
- 38:52Speaker 1: meet a couple of guys who need to fix Matts.
- 38:54Speaker 1: I don't have a chance to watch the team up
- 38:56Speaker 1: close as as much as I did Sunday. And I'll
- 38:59Speaker 1: tell you, I think this year is like you gave
- 39:04Speaker 1: up Pete Alonzo for that, Like that's just what I
- 39:07Speaker 1: keep thinking in my mind.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Well again, I'm gonna say another thing. We all wanted
- 39:10Speaker 2: Peter Alonzo back, and we did, but even Peter Alonso,
- 39:15Speaker 2: with the with the what they went through, what they've
- 39:17Speaker 2: gone through this year, under performance injuries, Peter Alonso was
- 39:21Speaker 2: not going to save them. They might have, they might
- 39:24Speaker 2: have had a couple more wins, but remember they had
- 39:26Speaker 2: Peter Alonzo on a team all last year and he
- 39:29Speaker 2: had a great year for the Mets. And from June
- 39:32Speaker 2: thirteenth to the last day of the season, when they
- 39:34Speaker 2: lost the playoff spot on the last day of the season.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Peter Alonzo played every game and they and they still
- 39:40Speaker 2: didn't make it. So it's not just Peter Alonzo and
- 39:43Speaker 2: nobody wanted Peter A. Lonzo. We signed more than me.
- 39:45Speaker 2: It's more than that.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Are we watching and you know, I love to bring
- 39:48Speaker 1: him up every chance I get. Are we watching the
- 39:52Speaker 1: Chris Jury of baseball right now? I have to make
- 39:55Speaker 1: that comparison because it just feels like what we see
- 39:58Speaker 1: in the garden is what we're seeing with the Mets,
- 39:59Speaker 1: a com fleet deconstruction, and like, let's start from the
- 40:03Speaker 1: ground up here. What what do you think?
- 40:05Speaker 2: Oh? I think it's a good point. The only thing
- 40:09Speaker 2: is if and if you listen or read uh talk
- 40:14Speaker 2: about Sterns. Even with anonymous scouts and and baseball executives,
- 40:23Speaker 2: David Stearns is still very highly regarded. I don't think
- 40:27Speaker 2: Chris Drewry is in the National Hockey League.
- 40:31Speaker 4: But that's true.
- 40:33Speaker 2: And I don't look and believe me, I don't understand it,
- 40:36Speaker 2: but baseball people still hold David Stearns in a very
- 40:42Speaker 2: very high regard, And I, guys, I don't get it.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Do you think once that Casino's bell Ever's gonna get
- 40:49Speaker 1: more restless because oh my god, Steve's focused on that
- 40:52Speaker 1: and not the actual team.
- 40:53Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no, that's just that's just
- 40:55Speaker 2: a newspaper talk he wants to do. You think do
- 40:58Speaker 2: you think that Steve Cohen has happened that hee, that
- 41:01Speaker 2: he sees what happened yesterday, that he had to do that,
- 41:04Speaker 2: what he's seen the first four.
- 41:07Speaker 1: I don't think so. He's I've been tweeting as much, right,
- 41:09Speaker 1: Am I missing something?
- 41:10Speaker 3: Oh?
- 41:10Speaker 2: There's nothing, there's nothing to tweet about.
- 41:13Speaker 3: I mean, what is there to tweet about apart from,
- 41:17Speaker 3: you know, just addressing the fans about how horrible this
- 41:19Speaker 3: season has been. And he doesn't want to be a distraction,
- 41:22Speaker 3: I'm sure, And it's tough to fault him considering that
- 41:25Speaker 3: there already have been enough distractions this season as it stands.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and and and again.
- 41:30Speaker 2: And they've had I know a lot of teams have
- 41:32Speaker 2: had injuries, they've had major injuries. We talked about it.
- 41:35Speaker 2: You can't lose, you can't lose Lindor like and Lindor
- 41:38Speaker 2: for Lindor. This year it's just a bad a bad year.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Broken wrist just
- 41:43Speaker 2: before training camp had to get that operated on the
- 41:47Speaker 2: hammet bone. Then uh, you know, fifteen games, eighteen games
- 41:52Speaker 2: into the season, he pulls a calf muscle. Those calf
- 41:55Speaker 2: those calf muscles seemed to linger longer than That's seems
- 42:00Speaker 2: to be the new injury in baseball, that lingish forever.
- 42:04Speaker 2: And uh and the same thing with uh with Soto,
- 42:07Speaker 2: Soda heard his cat the twelfth game of the year.
- 42:09Speaker 2: It's now he missed, you know, he missed three weeks.
- 42:12Speaker 2: He's when he played, he was performing at a sodo
- 42:15Speaker 2: high level. But now he's he's gone again. It's just
- 42:18Speaker 2: been a terrible year ross the construction, injuries, under performance,
- 42:25Speaker 2: you name it. And uh. So, by the way, I.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Want to mention this, So last year, around this time,
- 42:31Speaker 1: I was saying how grated deadline Cashman had bringing in
- 42:34Speaker 1: seven guys. Turns out he trades two of them, and
- 42:37Speaker 1: those were the two big failures, the Vall and Bird.
- 42:42Speaker 1: I don't know. I thought the Vault was good with
- 42:44Speaker 1: the Giants. I don't know what happened here, but I
- 42:46Speaker 1: mean it is he was Could they be Could he
- 42:50Speaker 1: be better where he's at now? Is what I'm trying
- 42:52Speaker 1: to say, Like, could that have.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Just been a New York thing or what it could
- 42:55Speaker 2: have been a New York thing.
- 42:58Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like they always kept experimenting
- 43:00Speaker 1: with that guy.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Well has he really gotten a lot of reps though?
- 43:02Speaker 1: With the Yanks.
- 43:02Speaker 4: I mean you paid a little bit more attention to
- 43:04Speaker 4: them than I have. Let me talk about up there.
- 43:06Speaker 1: We got bobbed. It was very it was it was
- 43:08Speaker 1: awful so and the one guy. As always, there's always
- 43:11Speaker 1: a trade rumor in there. I do feel bad that
- 43:13Speaker 1: Will Warren had to be mentioned in it. And last
- 43:16Speaker 1: year there was some wild thing that Spencer Jones for
- 43:19Speaker 1: skiings that was hat. It's hard the rumor mill never
- 43:22Speaker 1: gets old around this time. But I do agree with
- 43:25Speaker 1: Caymanscacko who said this was the busiest deadline we've had
- 43:28Speaker 1: in a while.
- 43:29Speaker 2: This was yep, this was almost like an NHL trade
- 43:33Speaker 2: deadline day. Yeah, yesterday was.
- 43:36Speaker 4: Now just like just kept getting trades and trades and
- 43:39Speaker 4: trades every five minutes.
- 43:40Speaker 3: Like by the time you were able to process one move, okay,
- 43:43Speaker 3: here's five more that have already been made, just long,
- 43:47Speaker 3: rapid fire in succession. And even the day before two
- 43:50Speaker 3: you were getting so many at these deals I'm really
- 43:52Speaker 3: taking the press off a lot of these teams to
- 43:54Speaker 3: make a panic move hours before the deadline.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Are you telling me it was thirty six years ago
- 43:59Speaker 1: around this time, a little earlier that Mike Piazza. I
- 44:03Speaker 1: think they got him in ninety eight, didn't they?
- 44:06Speaker 2: Yeah, May it was Memorial Memorial Day weekend of ninety eight.
- 44:10Speaker 1: I think to me, that's the biggest splash in New
- 44:14Speaker 1: York sports. I mean, you could say other trades, but
- 44:17Speaker 1: that one made us splash more than other moves when
- 44:20Speaker 1: it comes to all the trade the leagues. Although I
- 44:22Speaker 1: guess Gretzky's in New York, but he was a little
- 44:24Speaker 1: older than.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Piazza was, right rescue, Yeah, that's right. Piazza wins in
- 44:28Speaker 2: the prime and thanks to Bobby Valentine's great managing uh
- 44:33Speaker 2: he you know, he turned the Mets around in ninety seven.
- 44:37Speaker 2: They were you could see that day that they were
- 44:39Speaker 2: on the com He kind of forced the Mets to
- 44:42Speaker 2: make that next jump and to get a player like
- 44:46Speaker 2: Piazza after Miami had gotten him from the Dodgers and
- 44:50Speaker 2: they were definitely and they were going to flip them
- 44:52Speaker 2: and he was only there eight days in Miami and
- 44:55Speaker 2: getting Piazza changed everything, it really did. You know. That's
- 44:58Speaker 2: how they got to the two thousand World Series. Yeah,
- 45:00Speaker 2: that's how they you know they got to the players
- 45:02Speaker 2: from ninety nine. He's one of the five best players ever,
- 45:06Speaker 2: the everyday players they have a played for the franchise.
- 45:09Speaker 1: I still think he's one of the best trades in
- 45:12Speaker 1: this city because, yes, some of them just never really
- 45:15Speaker 1: worked out here. Let's just be honest in all sports.
- 45:18Speaker 3: One last thing, remember too, when Piazza was getting booed
- 45:22Speaker 3: to start his Mets career too. It wasn't all sunshines
- 45:25Speaker 3: and rainbows at first, little revisionist history here, but it
- 45:29Speaker 3: was exactly the same way that Mets fans looked at,
- 45:33Speaker 3: you know, Beltron when he first came here.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Same with Lindor Soto.
- 45:37Speaker 1: I mean about Tino replacing dominatically in ninety six. I mean,
- 45:42Speaker 1: he was a lot back then. And that's thirty years
- 45:45Speaker 1: ago already. I can't, Lou, I can't believe.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Time is flying.
- 45:48Speaker 1: I'm I'm now. They won it when I was about
- 45:51Speaker 1: four or five years old. I'm thirty five and they're
- 45:53Speaker 1: thirty years on Saturday, Like, how is it possible? Unbelieved
- 45:57Speaker 1: it is it.
- 45:58Speaker 2: HiT's hard to believe.
- 46:00Speaker 1: I want to end this because like, Okay, Kenyon Sadik
- 46:02Speaker 1: is out maybe for a while, if not the season
- 46:05Speaker 1: with the Jets. But that's not really relevant to anything
- 46:08Speaker 1: because this trade headline is trumping everything. So I got
- 46:11Speaker 1: to add this. In the nineties and two thousands, especially
- 46:15Speaker 1: two thousands when the Yankees added Gambi a Rod, all
- 46:19Speaker 1: these different guys over the years, the Yanks are buying championships.
- 46:23Speaker 1: They only bought one if you think about it, in nine.
- 46:27Speaker 1: The other ones were just simple trades that worked out.
- 46:30Speaker 1: There weren't big high free agent signings in the nineties.
- 46:34Speaker 1: But the Dodgers literally are buying championships. I think they
- 46:37Speaker 1: are the ones that are buying championships, not the Yankees,
- 46:40Speaker 1: and I want to stay there.
- 46:40Speaker 2: No no, no, no, no, no, no no. The Yankees
- 46:43Speaker 2: are the ones who did it. They are the post
- 46:46Speaker 2: a child for what's happening in the Dodgers. They did it.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Reggie don Galliz, I mean, I can go to one
- 46:54Speaker 2: hundred guys. Some of them worked out, some of them didn't.
- 46:58Speaker 2: The Yankees would not have won the World Series. He's
- 47:00Speaker 2: uh in uh two thousand and nine if they didn't
- 47:04Speaker 2: sign Sabathia, A J. Burnett, uh Ted Sharah. They are
- 47:10Speaker 2: the post of children for checkbook baseball, but they're not then.
- 47:16Speaker 2: And let's look at the Yankees team now, Max freed
- 47:20Speaker 2: free agent, Garrett Cole, free agent, Cody Bellinger, a salary
- 47:27Speaker 2: dump from the Chicago Cubs.
- 47:30Speaker 3: I mean, I can go on and on, and I
- 47:32Speaker 3: don't think Cody Pettit, who they give up for Bellinger,
- 47:34Speaker 3: is even in the Cubs organization anymore. Probably I don't
- 47:39Speaker 3: believe he's are the Cubs anymore.
- 47:41Speaker 1: But the one guy that is was the guy that
- 47:43Speaker 1: the Mets traded away, Pete Crow Armstrong, which is still.
- 47:47Speaker 4: Well because they didn't want to give up Matthew Allen,
- 47:49Speaker 4: who speaking.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Isn't now the Cubs. The Cubs asked for Matthew Allen,
- 47:58Speaker 2: and that said the and then that said no, the
- 48:02Speaker 2: Cubs actually answer for Matthew al and they as Pie
- 48:05Speaker 2: Crow Armstrong. But that's what happens when he had an
- 48:08Speaker 2: interim Zach Scott as an interim general manager, and uh
- 48:15Speaker 2: he was trying to become the permanent general manager, and
- 48:19Speaker 2: the Mets were in first place at that time, and
- 48:21Speaker 2: Hobby Baya is a very good player, and Hobby Bias
- 48:24Speaker 2: in his two munchs with the Mets played very well.
- 48:26Speaker 2: But the Mets he played very well. He played bet
- 48:30Speaker 2: at Beltran. Yeah, during during that time.
- 48:37Speaker 1: The thumbs down.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Really, I mean, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, That's what I meant,
- 48:44Speaker 2: not Beltran Lindor, although you.
- 48:46Speaker 3: Could say the same thing about Beltron's first year in
- 48:48Speaker 3: New York too. I mean, they're very much is the
- 48:51Speaker 3: argument there.
- 48:53Speaker 2: I was talking about that that year that they that
- 48:56Speaker 2: they got that they made the p C A for
- 48:59Speaker 2: Bias tra But again, uh, PCA now falls into that
- 49:03Speaker 2: fifteen percent of prospects who make it, not not in
- 49:07Speaker 2: that group of eighty five percent of prospects who don't
- 49:10Speaker 2: make it. And of course, boy, it would be nice
- 49:13Speaker 2: having PCA in center field, woul being on the left side,
- 49:17Speaker 2: and uh, you might be able to put Ewing at
- 49:20Speaker 2: second base and have Soto and left field, or have Ewing,
- 49:24Speaker 2: Ewing and left field and Soto as DH and part
- 49:28Speaker 2: time fourth outfielder.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Ben just making some plays on Sunday, He made a
- 49:32Speaker 1: few good plays in the right field that way.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and plus say you have Pete crow Armstrong
- 49:37Speaker 3: patrolling center field right, does that mean you still move
- 49:41Speaker 3: on for Brandon Nimo. I mean there's that whole butterfly
- 49:44Speaker 3: butterfly effect to potentially explore there.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Well, all I know is I think the next sellout,
- 49:50Speaker 1: if that will be the Beltrand game. I don't think
- 49:52Speaker 1: there's much else to really go to see.
- 49:55Speaker 3: Yes, I mean they couldn't sell out the building for
- 49:58Speaker 3: the eighty six reunion, really be able.
- 50:00Speaker 4: To sell it out.
- 50:01Speaker 1: City Field wasn't even sold out for the Mets. For
- 50:03Speaker 1: the Yankee Mets, I heard like it wasn't even that.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Well again, again, the Yankees have only the Yankees have
- 50:09Speaker 2: only had five sellouts this year. That's it, just five.
- 50:14Speaker 2: I guess they all have their sixth on Saturday, full
- 50:16Speaker 2: time to day.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. Well, and tickets are getting a little
- 50:22Speaker 1: more pricey. That's also That is for.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Certain because I've been monitoring those like every single day
- 50:28Speaker 3: for all timers.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Now, one last thing, can the Red Sox stay this hot?
- 50:35Speaker 2: Can they stay this hot?
- 50:38Speaker 1: I mean they've already won the only ten games to
- 50:40Speaker 1: tie a franchise high fifteen game win streak. Maybe maybe
- 50:43Speaker 1: they'll make it sixteen. I don't know, but it's it's
- 50:47Speaker 1: but that's That's the other thing about this year. I
- 50:50Speaker 1: said it with you, both of you. You see the
- 50:53Speaker 1: Red Sox make a change. You see the Phillies make
- 50:55Speaker 1: a change. If you're gonna make the change, you do
- 50:58Speaker 1: it then, not a month later when you're out of
- 51:01Speaker 1: the damn race. They waited a month too long to
- 51:04Speaker 1: fire Mendoza if they were gonna do it at all.
- 51:06Speaker 1: That's how I feel about it.
- 51:08Speaker 3: They definitely did, And I mean, look, I don't think
- 51:11Speaker 3: this season is Mendoza's fault necessarily. Yes, he had his flaws,
- 51:17Speaker 3: but even he could do so much with the roster,
- 51:21Speaker 3: the overhaul, poor, horribly overhauled roster that was handed to
- 51:26Speaker 3: him by David Stearns. I think anybody would have failed
- 51:29Speaker 3: in that situation. Heck, you could even throw a prime
- 51:31Speaker 3: Sparky Anderson in there, and I don't know how much
- 51:33Speaker 3: better you would have, how much better results you would
- 51:36Speaker 3: have gotten. But that said, after that twelve game losing streak,
- 51:41Speaker 3: or even during it, you gotta make a change one
- 51:45Speaker 3: way or another. You got to light a fire in
- 51:48Speaker 3: that clubhouse. Somehow they waited way too long to do that.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Oh, they have their best player, remember, so didn't play
- 52:00Speaker 2: one game during a twelve game losing street. Yeah that
- 52:03Speaker 2: that means something, you know, But again I don't. I
- 52:08Speaker 2: don't think you could. You could resurrected Gil Hodges, and
- 52:12Speaker 2: I don't think the Mets sort of would be doing
- 52:14Speaker 2: anything this year early, middle or late.
- 52:17Speaker 1: I mean, maybe they would have had a slightly record,
- 52:19Speaker 1: But that's really did you mention Alonzo? That's the other
- 52:21Speaker 1: time they're gonna come back as when Alonzo comes back.
- 52:23Speaker 3: To Yeah, that now that will be a sellout. That
- 52:26Speaker 3: will be a sellout. Although a lot of it is
- 52:28Speaker 3: gonna be Mets fans coming for Pee Alonzo. They're not
- 52:31Speaker 3: coming for the product on the field current.
- 52:32Speaker 2: No, of course the coming and I will be one
- 52:35Speaker 2: of them.
- 52:36Speaker 4: I will happily admit that as well.
- 52:40Speaker 3: Because look, even though I said at the time that
- 52:42Speaker 3: I could live with Pete Alonzo leaving the Mets, that
- 52:45Speaker 3: was under the assumption that Hore Polanco and whoever they
- 52:49Speaker 3: were gonna throw out first base was gonna work out.
- 52:51Speaker 3: I was operating under the that assumption. But unfortunately I
- 52:55Speaker 3: was operating under the very wrong assumption. Because to say
- 52:59Speaker 3: that Horry pool Unco has not worked out here is
- 53:01Speaker 3: just a massive understatement. I mean when how He Rose
- 53:05Speaker 3: is talking on the radio about how his batting average
- 53:09Speaker 3: is the same number of the Seaford Oyster Bay Express
- 53:12Speaker 3: Ray Route one thirty five, that's how you know things
- 53:15Speaker 3: are dire when you're seeing statistics about how his batting
- 53:19Speaker 3: average in the month of July is lower than Jim
- 53:21Speaker 3: Abbott's career batting average. Jim that he had higher career
- 53:27Speaker 3: batting average than Hory Blanco did in the month of July.
- 53:30Speaker 3: When we're talking about that, that's how you know things
- 53:32Speaker 3: have gone horribly.
- 53:33Speaker 4: Off the rails here.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Yeah, but the guy, the guy was injury had a
- 53:36Speaker 2: bet he's had a bum foot last year, had twenty
- 53:38Speaker 2: six run seventy six RBIs if if he had done
- 53:42Speaker 2: that this year for the Mets, we would be thrilled.
- 53:45Speaker 2: He he won the playoff series against against Detroit, and that's.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Why everybody you know that, That's why I thought it
- 53:54Speaker 3: was a slam dunk signing at the time.
- 53:57Speaker 4: But the postseason that.
- 53:58Speaker 3: He had with Seattle and all that, I mean, who
- 54:00Speaker 3: would to be thrilled about the prospects of having him
- 54:03Speaker 3: back on your team, whether it was at first or
- 54:05Speaker 3: whether they were going to try to platune him around
- 54:08Speaker 3: the infield one way or another.
- 54:10Speaker 4: Well, that's why I was sold on it at the time.
- 54:13Speaker 1: This reminds me of one other thing because obviously the
- 54:15Speaker 1: Mets got Belt trand you know that after it, but
- 54:19Speaker 1: after his incredible five with the Astros. I don't know,
- 54:24Speaker 1: you guys might take asue with this, but I feel
- 54:27Speaker 1: like a guy should go in with the team he
- 54:29Speaker 1: had the most success with. And yes, yes he does
- 54:32Speaker 1: it with the Mets, but he wouldn't have been that
- 54:34Speaker 1: valuable if he didn't have five. The Astros era was
- 54:38Speaker 1: the reason.
- 54:39Speaker 2: So you want him to go you want him playing
- 54:41Speaker 2: too much of the Astros to go in as an astro.
- 54:44Speaker 2: That's ridiculous.
- 54:45Speaker 3: A year and two months at that, I mean, at
- 54:48Speaker 3: least if you want to count twenty seventeen and the
- 54:50Speaker 3: last season of his career.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. I'm not even talking about the end.
- 54:55Speaker 2: At the end, I'm talking about you know five. I mean,
- 55:00Speaker 2: I mean, uh, at the end, it was just, you know,
- 55:02Speaker 2: these guys just hanging on.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Like the reason why I seec win was in the
- 55:05Speaker 1: Yankees because he won a World Series with them. There's
- 55:07Speaker 1: no doubt about that.
- 55:07Speaker 2: But well, again, as you know, I've said this before.
- 55:11Speaker 2: I don't believe any of these guys would make the
- 55:13Speaker 2: Hall of Fame should have to designate, and they can
- 55:16Speaker 2: designate no cap, no logo at all if they want.
- 55:20Speaker 2: I think they should all go in with just a
- 55:24Speaker 2: cap on their on their bust with with with no
- 55:28Speaker 2: team logo and just put and then just in the
- 55:31Speaker 2: uh you know, in the plaque.
- 55:32Speaker 1: You know they they yeah, unless they really aren't defined
- 55:35Speaker 1: like Andrew Jones is defined as a Brave, so that's
- 55:37Speaker 1: a noble.
- 55:38Speaker 4: That's brain right there.
- 55:40Speaker 3: I mean, look, people aren't gonna be defining him first
- 55:43Speaker 3: tenure with the Yankees or even the Dodgers. Nobody's going
- 55:46Speaker 3: to be talking about that because all a lot of
- 55:49Speaker 3: the casuals are gonna remember about Andrew Jones is how
- 55:51Speaker 3: dominant of a center fielder he was with the Braves
- 55:54Speaker 3: for those late nineties teams when they were running hog
- 55:57Speaker 3: wild over the rest of the NL East. No remembers
- 56:00Speaker 3: that those latter stages in his career after he has
- 56:04Speaker 3: moved on for the Braves, So that at least makes sense.
- 56:08Speaker 2: When you guys have a chance research Jim Edmonds, who
- 56:12Speaker 2: was a fantastic research to Jim Edwins and if Andrew
- 56:17Speaker 2: Jones's Hall of Fame, does Jim Edmonds have an argument
- 56:21Speaker 2: to be in the Hall of.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Fame, especially with his Angel years. I mean those Angel
- 56:25Speaker 1: years were unbelievable.
- 56:27Speaker 2: I mean even with the Cardinals.
- 56:28Speaker 1: He was on with the Cardinals, Yeah, yeah, you know,
- 56:32Speaker 1: he was on the Angels that had the old pinstripes
- 56:34Speaker 1: back in the era that was.
- 56:36Speaker 2: That was a day so relevant franchise. What the Los
- 56:41Speaker 2: Angeles Angels they are? They are irrelevant? My god.
- 56:47Speaker 1: And you know, I Shilan Eliers was speaking of the
- 56:49Speaker 1: aos shaneleng Eliers was healthy, he would have been dealt yesterday,
- 56:52Speaker 1: one hundred percent.
- 56:53Speaker 2: I think he would have been he was. He'd been
- 56:56Speaker 2: dangled out there, no doubt about it.
- 56:58Speaker 1: So that's a round.
- 57:00Speaker 4: What do you get at just one last question here?
- 57:02Speaker 3: Then? Would he get dangled out maybe in the offseason,
- 57:04Speaker 3: assuming you play games at twenty seven? Does that just
- 57:07Speaker 3: kick the can down the road eventually? Or is this
- 57:11Speaker 3: gonna make the ACE realize that maybe they want to
- 57:13Speaker 3: keep langlears alowing around for the future. Not one hundred
- 57:15Speaker 3: percent sure what they're gonna be thinking. But there's also
- 57:18Speaker 3: the whole uncertainty aspect with twenty twenty seven. That's definitely
- 57:22Speaker 3: gonna cloud everybody's judgment.
- 57:24Speaker 1: And you know, it's funny with the Padres, you mentioned them.
- 57:26Speaker 1: They made a trade for Casey Mice. Normally I'm convinced
- 57:30Speaker 1: that Padres are gonna be making something out of their year.
- 57:34Speaker 1: But I don't know. They've had a very different kind
- 57:36Speaker 1: of season that they normally don't have. Normally they're more dominant.
- 57:39Speaker 1: So I don't know what's been going on.
- 57:40Speaker 2: Well, maybe the next two months, so they'll catch fire,
- 57:43Speaker 2: because I.
- 57:43Speaker 1: Thought for sure they were gonna beat the Dodgers, was
- 57:46Speaker 1: it last year or two years ago in that ANL
- 57:49Speaker 1: wild card, But it just didn't happen.
- 57:51Speaker 2: So I think they're dangerous if they get in, I
- 57:54Speaker 2: think they're dangerous. Their bullpen is lights out getting uh
- 58:00Speaker 2: you know some pitchers yesterday is going to help them
- 58:03Speaker 2: out a lot, you know. So they are there, they're
- 58:09Speaker 2: they're a team to watch.
- 58:11Speaker 1: The Yeah, a lot of these teams that are sort
- 58:14Speaker 1: of I feel like we could just call them bubble
- 58:16Speaker 1: teams now because it's like there's a bubble now in
- 58:20Speaker 1: Major League Baseball. There really is, and on the bubble
- 58:23Speaker 1: is the Padres for sure.
- 58:26Speaker 2: I'm going to make ahea. I'm sorry.
- 58:27Speaker 1: I think Miami does get into the playoffs somehow. I
- 58:30Speaker 1: just I can see it happening.
- 58:31Speaker 2: So I'm going to make one prediction after whenever this
- 58:35Speaker 2: lockout is over, when they come to a new collective
- 58:38Speaker 2: Blot agreement, they will be They will be locked out
- 58:40Speaker 2: on December first. Hopefully it won't it won't a trickle
- 58:45Speaker 2: into deep into training camp. Hopefully we don't miss any games,
- 58:49Speaker 2: but there definitely will be a There will be a
- 58:51Speaker 2: lockout on December first, whether it be for six weeks,
- 58:55Speaker 2: you know, right after the holidays into twenty twenty seven,
- 58:58Speaker 2: maybe a couple of weeks, and it will be all where.
- 59:00Speaker 2: I don't know. I hope so. But in the last negotiations,
- 59:05Speaker 2: the owners wanted seven playoff teams and only the team
- 59:10Speaker 2: with the best overall record to have the first round
- 59:13Speaker 2: by I think there's gonna be a seventh playoff team
- 59:20Speaker 2: in the next collective Boden agreement. The player does knocked
- 59:23Speaker 2: that down. The players donn't want the seventh team. I
- 59:26Speaker 2: think this time it's gonna happen.
- 59:28Speaker 1: Well, maybe that's what they say. Okay, if you're gonna
- 59:31Speaker 1: let the Dodgers run rampant on us, give us an
- 59:32Speaker 1: extra team, to give us a chance to like make competitive,
- 59:36Speaker 1: and give extra guys a chance to be in the playoffs.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Well again, I also think there might be some type
- 59:41Speaker 2: of ceiling and floor. There might be some type of
- 59:44Speaker 2: ceiling and floor. I don't think there's gonna be an
- 59:48Speaker 2: out and out salary cap.
- 59:49Speaker 1: That would be like football, as you just said, two
- 59:51Speaker 1: teams in the in the bys and then the third, fourth, fifth, sixth,
- 59:55Speaker 1: seventh would be.
- 59:56Speaker 2: Playing, is what you're thinking, right, Well, No, that'll be
- 59:59Speaker 2: just the There will be one team, the team with
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: the best record will uh have the buy and then
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: the you know, the the other six will play off,
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: and then you'll have four teams left to play in
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: the divisional series.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: And then oh, I think I think MOLB would love
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: that idea.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Only well, I think the owners wanted that the last time.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I think they might get at this time.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: And if there's seven teams, that could mean like our
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Rockies out of nowhere, it could come into the be
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: in the in the playoffs, you know, like it gives
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: This is why I love the expansion of the playoffs.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: I know you're Purest Loue. But I love the idea
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: of giving extra team, a team that normally doesn't have
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: a chance to make it, like the Rockies in a
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: few years ago. I mean, when this thing expanded, the
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Pirates were in the running.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: When we hear that Sox, look at the White Sox.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: This year, the White Socks are in the running. Hell,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: even the Nationals have a shot at something. I mean,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: it just it's incredible to me that some of these
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: teams are normally not playoff contenders are.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: In it so suddenly spring into the mix just like that.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: I mean crazy talk that the you know, the Guardians
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: and the White Sox are in contention for the Central Heck,
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: even the fact that the Twins.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Or a game out of the playoff pictures under five hundred.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: That's still gonna make a playoff front.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: Here right, Yeah, it's it's crazy.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: It's gonna be fun. And I tell you I always
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: love it. The uh that last day of baseball now
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: has become something because you never know that that really
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: defines a day, much like the last day of the
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: NFL season defines. I remember one year, ninety six teams
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: were like playoff possibilities. Great ninety six possibilities or something
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: like that. That was wild that one.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: Well, for for a couple of years in a row,
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: those NFL Final Sundays were just incredible how teams were
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: in and out, so uh if that happens in a
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: league baseball, and it happened that one, that one last
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: game all now this season, I forget which year that was.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: That was just an amazing final night of the baseball season.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: The baseball season ended either on a Tuesday or Wednesday night.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: It was just incredible how teams were in the one
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: inning and out the next in one inning.
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: Twenty elevens I.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Can't remember, but it was unbelievable.
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: The Yankees were in Tampa, yeah, and they were up
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: like seven nothing. Tampa came back and they they had
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: to win and make the playoffs, and I forgot there
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: was another game somewhere else.
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: Yeah, So that was twenty eleven then, because the Rays
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: were fighting with the Red Sox the AL wild card,
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: the Socks were in Baltimore that night and they had
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: the lead. Red Sox blewid Orioles walked it off minutes
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: before Tampa Bay won the game and the wild card
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: on a Longoria walk off home run. I mean, I mean,
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: as the saying goes from Moneyball, how could you not
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: be romantic about baseball?
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: Now?
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: Baseball is how could you not be romantic about this?
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Agree it's the best, It's the best.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: And I also think hot take, I love the baseball
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: day game. Like I'm just convinced the baseball day game
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: is the best time to play a game because it's
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: just beautiful. I mean, sitting out there in center field
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: left center on Sunday was just like literally it felt
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: like a walk in the park. It just was so
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: beautiful just to sit there and enjoy it.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Like, I don't know, day baseball is fantastic, Alex, you
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: are correct.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: And you know, Ryan, back in the day, they used
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: to have day game World Series, So that will never
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: happen the year.
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: Yeah, that sadly won't happen. With the new emphasis on
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: TV ratings and all that.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: I mean, you're never going to get a good TV
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: rating during the big day, as fun as it would be.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: That's why I love it when they have all the
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: wild cards and like some guys during the day and
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: then some of the night. It's fun when they have
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: the day games like that.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: But well, the first ten years of my life. There
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: was no work, not of my life, of my baseball
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: fan them. The first ten eleven years, all the World
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: Series games.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Kids would come to school back in lose days just
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: to watch.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: The day I did. That's it I did. That's exactly what.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: That's what I did. A Game five of the sixty
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: nine World Series, I did not I went to school
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: in the morning and I did not go the afternoon.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: I'm sure that was a lot, now, you know. He
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: said sixty nine did not have a Ken Heroes. I
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: thought they didn't have some parade though, because I remember
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: seeing pictures of severe No.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: Sixty nine had In sixty nine, the Mets had had
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: the parade. They they did have the Canyons of hero parade.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: But the Jets won in sixty nine and they just
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: had a ceremony at a uge ceremony at City Hall.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: The Knicks one in seventy. They want, well, that's what
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: it was, Yeah, the Knicks, and they also had a
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: ceremony at at city Hall. But they didn't know the
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: only one of the three teams, and I don't know
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: what the reason was that had the parade down the
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: canyon off heroes were the Mets and I don't know
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: why all three of them didn't have it, because all
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: three of them won within you know, fourteen months, fourteenth thirty.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: And now you say, well the Jets, well the Giants
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: are in Jersey, but they get the kne heroes. But
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: that was when the Jets were in New York. I
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: mean that was really a New York Jets team there.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: But yeah, and the first two championship Giants won the
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: first two Super Bowls, they did not have a parade
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: down the Canyon and heroes. They celebrated in the parking
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: lot at the Giants Stadium, at the old Giants Stadium.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: And then I believe the American Express sponsored paid for
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: when the Giants won the third Super Bowl, and they
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: paid for it. The city didn't pay for it. And
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: then I think when they won it fourth, I think
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: the city did pay for it. But the first two,
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: there was never a doubt that there was going to
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: be a that there wasn't going to be a parade.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: There were not. There was the City of New York
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: was not going to be a preade because it was
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: really there was a lot of animosity that you know,
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: the Jets and Giants cross the river. You know or
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: paying taxes in New Jersey and not.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: That's true. All right, one last note on all of this.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: I'm one of the teams that dealt guys Dalton var
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Show going to the Ashes. If you're in the fan
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: base of a team that's in at least under five
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: games out, five games are under behind, aren't you pretty
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: pissed off that you got rid of an Ali Rushman
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: of the Orioles are only two and a half out
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: of a playoff spot, Toronto getting red var Show. I mean,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: I don't know. It deflates a fan base when their
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: guys are getting traded and they're still in a playoff run.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: Is that something we're going to be seeing more of?
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: Or have we been seeing that already?
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Look? I think we are. I think we're going to
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: see more of that. Look a look at the Tigers.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: We saw the training scruball they traded Casey Mayes. They're
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: only two and a half games to have a playoff spot.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: And their conditioners selling. When have I ever said that
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: normally contenders buy?
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: So I don't know. Well, some a couple of teams,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: uh both Washington did Toronto? Did they both sold and bought?
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. But with the Red Sox, I forgot
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: about this. They're doing all this without Roman Anthony. If
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: Anthony can get back before the end of the year,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: they're going to be a really a bigger threat than
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: they already are. And how about her all this chatman Okay,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: hated it by the Yankees fans, but actually he's like
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: made records as a Saves leader. Now it's he's showing
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: his dominance against It's very interesting to watch that.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: Well, well, a month ago he was going to be
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: a trade deadline dealer. They were going to deal him
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: at the trade deadline on July. You know, on the
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: twenty fourth of June, they were thirty two and forty six,
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: worst record in the American League. They probably were only
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: a game or two better than the Mets, or maybe
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: the Mets at the same record. And since now they're
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: nine games over five hundred, it's unbelievable turnaround in five weeks.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: I'll show you how great baseball is.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Well after a chaotic weekend, thank you for lou Terminilla
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: for breaking it down for us. And the one thing
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: I did about liking it, I liked the fact that
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: the trade eland was on Monday, because we saw chaos
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: on Saturday Sunday. Weren't there a couple guys? There was
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: at least one guy. I think Laye Thomas got pulled
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: from the game because he got traded to the Braves.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: I love that kind of chaos. And Jake Byrd was
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: pulled from his relief appearance and minors to be traded.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: I love that kind of stuff, guys.
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: I love that shit.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: It's gonna be interesting the rest of the way.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Yes sirs, all right, lou Terminello, Ryan Pagano, thank you
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: for joining me to break down the trade deadline with us.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: Always a blank you boys.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Thanks, guys, appreciate it.
