- 0:43Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
- 0:46Speaker 4: I have my two co hosts in the building, Lisa
- 0:48Speaker 4: Odie and Hollis Lewis.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, this is today.
- 0:54Speaker 4: We're gonna have a very very very very special guest
- 0:58Speaker 4: that I think everybody, everybody will appreciate. And I'm actually
- 1:03Speaker 4: really really curious to know a lot of things that
- 1:07Speaker 4: I don't know about this specific person. But we have,
- 1:11Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen on the phone. We have Jim McMahon,
- 1:15Speaker 4: quarterback for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Former quarterback the Chicago Bears.
- 1:23Speaker 4: With the b yu Okay drafted number one with the
- 1:29Speaker 4: Chicago Bears in eighty two, played fifteen seasons in the NFL,
- 1:38Speaker 4: and he also was with the Packers. Oh, Lisa, I
- 1:42Speaker 4: don't think we have a Packer. We have a Packer
- 1:44Speaker 4: fan here too, Jim, so she.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Can appreciate that is in the College Hall of Fame and.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Played on I'm gonna say, hollis probably one of the
- 1:58Speaker 4: best football teams that I had ever been a part of.
- 2:03Speaker 4: And again I saw I played against Montana and Rice
- 2:08Speaker 4: and that group, but the Chicago Bears was just it
- 2:13Speaker 4: was just a different thing.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So, ladies and gentlemen. Jim McMahon, Jim, how you doing?
- 2:19Speaker 5: Man doing great? Parker doing great? Thanks? Thanks, Well, you know, I.
- 2:32Speaker 6: I played along, Jim. I already knew that.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah she does.
- 2:36Speaker 4: She does do her research, so she's our researcher for sure.
- 2:40Speaker 4: And and I dogged her about being a Packer fan.
- 2:43Speaker 4: And then we had Sterling Sharp on the show, and
- 2:45Speaker 4: of course she was, you know, she was just falling
- 2:48Speaker 4: all over the place.
- 2:51Speaker 2: But but but.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Jim, you know, when I when I think back, when
- 2:55Speaker 4: I look at when I look at the Bears, when
- 2:56Speaker 4: I think about the Bears and I and I think
- 2:58Speaker 4: about that team when I look and when I think
- 3:02Speaker 4: about it.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I know the defense was great.
- 3:07Speaker 4: You and Walter Payton was unbelievable, and you and and
- 3:12Speaker 4: you had Willie Galt, But that that team as a whole,
- 3:19Speaker 4: it wasn't really just a defensive team to me playing
- 3:23Speaker 4: against it, it was you guys were like a family
- 3:28Speaker 4: of just dogs. Man. It was like you every game
- 3:32Speaker 4: you all played, it was like you were out there
- 3:34Speaker 4: on the field and it was like you had to
- 3:37Speaker 4: watch it because it was so so fast.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So physical.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Do you think that team was probably one of the
- 3:44Speaker 4: most physical teams, one of the best teams. And I
- 3:47Speaker 4: know you could be biased, it's on you, but I'm
- 3:49Speaker 4: a guy that had played against it, and I'm thinking
- 3:52Speaker 4: it is.
- 3:53Speaker 5: I played on seven different teams. But we were you know,
- 3:58Speaker 5: we were we were well conditioned, that's for damn sure.
- 4:01Speaker 5: I mean we dick dick of Warris out during the week.
- 4:05Speaker 5: I mean day was game day was like a day
- 4:07Speaker 5: off for us because it was it was brutal going
- 4:11Speaker 5: against you know, we had to go against that defense
- 4:13Speaker 5: every day.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Wow, I didn't think about that.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Everything everything used to be live you know, there was
- 4:18Speaker 5: no Buddy buddy periods. I mean it was you know,
- 4:21Speaker 5: Dick and Buddy did get along, So I mean it
- 4:24Speaker 5: was our practices were long, and then at the end
- 4:26Speaker 5: of practice we'd run one hundred yard dashes until he
- 4:30Speaker 5: got tired of blowing the whistle. So we were we
- 4:32Speaker 5: were conditioned, and we had a lot of good football players.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Uh. Hey, Jim, this is Lisa. I'm gonna I'm going
- 4:40Speaker 6: to take you back. I know in the bio that
- 4:42Speaker 6: Carl had mentioned you attended b YU, So I'm gonna
- 4:45Speaker 6: I'm going to take you back a few days to
- 4:47Speaker 6: that time period. If you don't mind, go ahead. Thanks.
- 4:51Speaker 6: Uh So, you attended b YU and at that time
- 4:55Speaker 6: they allowed you to play both baseball and football. I
- 4:58Speaker 6: know that the baseball was short lived, but they that
- 5:01Speaker 6: was that was the agreement when you win to b
- 5:03Speaker 6: BYU to play football, that you could also play baseball
- 5:05Speaker 6: your freshman year. Knowing now what you know about the
- 5:09Speaker 6: physical toll of football, what would be some advice you
- 5:14Speaker 6: would give to a young athlete choosing between college football
- 5:17Speaker 6: and baseball.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Well, I was I wish I could have stuck with baseball.
- 5:22Speaker 5: That was always my first love. I mean, I thought
- 5:24Speaker 5: it was a better baseball player, and it just football
- 5:29Speaker 5: was my scholarship. And my dad said, no, you're going
- 5:31Speaker 5: to college because I got drafted to play baseball out
- 5:33Speaker 5: of high school. Wow when you know what round or
- 5:36Speaker 5: whatever it was. But and he goes, no, you're going
- 5:40Speaker 5: to go to college. And the other option I had
- 5:43Speaker 5: was Nevadelas Vegas. It was the only two schools that
- 5:45Speaker 5: have all the ones that I went to that said
- 5:47Speaker 5: I could play both sports, right, And of course I
- 5:51Speaker 5: wanted to go to Vegas. You know, I have a
- 5:52Speaker 5: normal life, of course, Yeah, but not how it worked out.
- 5:59Speaker 5: So I played. I played about either six or eight
- 6:02Speaker 5: games in my freshman year, and and I couldn't get
- 6:06Speaker 5: out of spring football practice, and so I played a
- 6:08Speaker 5: game of a doubleheader, and I was playing in the
- 6:10Speaker 5: outfield and throwing the ball from the outfield and throwing
- 6:13Speaker 5: it from the pocket is totally different. And I was
- 6:17Speaker 5: starting to have some arm problems. So I had to
- 6:19Speaker 5: go with my scholarship, which was football. So yeah, I
- 6:23Speaker 5: try it all worked out, but I know, I sure
- 6:25Speaker 5: I wouldn't feel it as bad if I played baseball.
- 6:29Speaker 7: Now, speaking of your time at BUYU, you probably played
- 6:32Speaker 7: and you had ultimate success there, winning various awards playing
- 6:36Speaker 7: the quarterbacks position, and you played in probably what was
- 6:40Speaker 7: one of the most exciting games in the Holiday Bowl
- 6:42Speaker 7: during your time, had a great comeback win. So could
- 6:45Speaker 7: you just speak on them, you know, give us some
- 6:48Speaker 7: memories of that game.
- 6:51Speaker 5: I know Dickerson brings it up every time I see him. Yeah,
- 6:55Speaker 5: he was on that team, Craig James. I mean, they
- 6:58Speaker 5: had the best team money could buy it at the time.
- 7:00Speaker 5: You know, there wasn't then I.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Held well that was that was the other.
- 7:07Speaker 5: But yeah, they they had to hell of a football
- 7:10Speaker 5: team and and uh yeah, we got down pretty far
- 7:13Speaker 5: early in the game and things weren't going well, but
- 7:17Speaker 5: the second half went okay. In the fourth quarter, well,
- 7:19Speaker 5: actually the last three or four minutes was a was
- 7:22Speaker 5: a was the game. I mean how we were down
- 7:24Speaker 5: twenty points and uh come back and win. You know,
- 7:28Speaker 5: we scored quickly, got an on side kick, scored again,
- 7:32Speaker 5: finally stopped him, got the ball back, and you know,
- 7:35Speaker 5: the last play of the game, throwed up and and
- 7:38Speaker 5: our tight and catches it for the tie, and then
- 7:41Speaker 5: the kicker had to come in to win it for us.
- 7:43Speaker 5: But yeah, that was a pretty exciting last three minutes
- 7:48Speaker 5: of the game.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Jim, I'm I'm I'm curious about and I know that
- 7:56Speaker 4: you and the Bears and that Bears team, there was
- 7:58Speaker 4: a whole lot of confident when you were in college
- 8:02Speaker 4: and you were thinking about wanting to play in the NFL.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Tell me a little.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Bit about did you think what did you think about
- 8:10Speaker 4: getting to the league. Did you think you have the
- 8:13Speaker 4: success that you had or did you think it would
- 8:15Speaker 4: be something different or or or how did you approach
- 8:19Speaker 4: the NFL.
- 8:21Speaker 2: As you as a person?
- 8:24Speaker 8: Uh?
- 8:25Speaker 5: Probably just like I approached every level from growing up,
- 8:29Speaker 5: you know, and you get you get to your playing
- 8:32Speaker 5: little league ball, right, I think I started ten years old, right,
- 8:36Speaker 5: saying you just want to you just want to get
- 8:38Speaker 5: to that next level. You want to get from pee
- 8:40Speaker 5: wee up to the juniors or whether they call them,
- 8:42Speaker 5: I don't know how they call them in different leagues.
- 8:45Speaker 5: But then you want to get up there and play
- 8:47Speaker 5: with the older guys. I never wanted to play with
- 8:50Speaker 5: the guys my age because they sucked. I mean, you know,
- 8:56Speaker 5: you got to you got to you know, uh, you know,
- 9:00Speaker 5: push yourself, and you're not going to push yourself against
- 9:02Speaker 5: guys your own age. So I always thought, you know,
- 9:06Speaker 5: getting to the next level was not excuse me, it
- 9:09Speaker 5: was not going to be a problem. I I knew
- 9:12Speaker 5: how to put in the work, I knew what I
- 9:13Speaker 5: could do, So you know, I was never worried about
- 9:17Speaker 5: getting to that next level.
- 9:19Speaker 7: Now now, I mean, man, I was a quarterback growing up,
- 9:22Speaker 7: play quarterback in college, and you were always somebody I
- 9:26Speaker 7: looked at. Now, you wore the glasses, the sunglasses, super
- 9:30Speaker 7: Bowl shuffle, all that sort of thing. I thought you
- 9:33Speaker 7: were the coolest dude ever, you know what I mean.
- 9:37Speaker 7: And you know you had the swag before we start
- 9:39Speaker 7: calling this swag. So what was kind of like maybe
- 9:43Speaker 7: some misconceptions people had about you and sort of the persona.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Well, I've I've been getting grief for my sunglasses since
- 9:52Speaker 5: I was six years old and I stuck a fork
- 9:54Speaker 5: in my eye when I was a little kid. I
- 9:57Speaker 5: was trying to untie a knot my gun holster and
- 10:01Speaker 5: my brothers and I were playing cowboys at the Indians
- 10:03Speaker 5: of that day because we didn't have Xbox and all
- 10:05Speaker 5: that you know they got nowadays. Yeah, you know, me, kid,
- 10:12Speaker 5: I got the wretch. I tried to get that nod
- 10:17Speaker 5: out and slipped. And that proves the hands quicker than
- 10:20Speaker 5: the eye, because too prongs went dead center of my
- 10:23Speaker 5: eye and kind of tore tore it to the right.
- 10:27Speaker 5: And so they were they did a hell of a
- 10:29Speaker 5: job just to save my eye. And so now the
- 10:32Speaker 5: pupil doesn't dilate it. They had to cut a big
- 10:34Speaker 5: chunk of the irish out so that the pupils always
- 10:37Speaker 5: you know, dilated. So any kind of light, sunlight, just
- 10:41Speaker 5: you know, sitting in a room when bright light hurts.
- 10:44Speaker 5: So I've worn them since I was six years old
- 10:46Speaker 5: and got in grief the whole time. So I really
- 10:48Speaker 5: don't care any you know, I didn't care that.
- 10:51Speaker 7: Well, I know for us and for ours eighties babies,
- 10:54Speaker 7: we just thought it was cool.
- 10:56Speaker 6: Yeah, and I'm gonna I'm gonna play off of Hollis's question.
- 10:59Speaker 6: So besides the sunglasses, Jim, what about your headbands? I mean,
- 11:03Speaker 6: they weren't they weren't just like fashion. They were they
- 11:06Speaker 6: were statements, right, So.
- 11:07Speaker 5: And what was the most they forced me into that?
- 11:10Speaker 6: Oh they did? That wasn't your idea.
- 11:12Speaker 5: You know. I started wearing a headband in college and
- 11:15Speaker 5: that's just the only reason was to keep the damn
- 11:17Speaker 5: skin on your forehead. You take that damn helmet off
- 11:20Speaker 5: and on so many times. Yeah yeah, they're in training camp.
- 11:23Speaker 6: Yeah yeah.
- 11:24Speaker 5: And you know you see guys all the time training
- 11:26Speaker 5: camp with tape at guys all over their foreheads because
- 11:28Speaker 5: they had no skin left. Right the reason I started
- 11:31Speaker 5: wearing them, and then I didn't know they started getting
- 11:35Speaker 5: paid to wear.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Them, So that was kind of what happened.
- 11:40Speaker 5: I was wearing that Adidas headband for probably two years
- 11:43Speaker 5: before they said a word. You know, all of a sudden,
- 11:46Speaker 5: we're in the playoffs and it's a big stink. I
- 11:49Speaker 5: didn't realize Adidas wasn't paying the league at the time,
- 11:51Speaker 5: which wasn't mind, right, but I've been I've been wearing
- 11:55Speaker 5: the same shoes, the same headband for the you know,
- 11:57Speaker 5: since I got in the league, so you know, but
- 12:00Speaker 5: now it's a big deal. So they find me in
- 12:03Speaker 5: a playoff game and then the following week I put
- 12:07Speaker 5: Rosella on my head and I didn't get a fine.
- 12:10Speaker 5: That week, I got a call from the commissioner thanking
- 12:14Speaker 5: me for the free advertising, and then tell me how
- 12:17Speaker 5: I wasn't going to be able to wear it at
- 12:18Speaker 5: the super Bowl, and I thought, I will see And
- 12:22Speaker 5: somehow I get from the NFC Championship game of the
- 12:26Speaker 5: Super Bowl, you got two weeks and somehow a rule
- 12:30Speaker 5: book ended up in my locker. I don't know who
- 12:32Speaker 5: put it there. So I started going through it, and
- 12:35Speaker 5: I realized they had no reason to find me, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 5: a couple of weeks ago. So I was and I
- 12:42Speaker 5: got offered some good money from Adidas to wear it
- 12:44Speaker 5: in the super Bowl. And I told them, look, I said,
- 12:47Speaker 5: I'm going to wear it, but probably not on my head,
- 12:49Speaker 5: but you'll be able to see it as clear as day.
- 12:51Speaker 5: And they said, well, as long as we can see it,
- 12:53Speaker 5: we'll pay it. So I said cool. And so now
- 12:56Speaker 5: I'm getting through this rule book and I'm going I
- 12:58Speaker 5: got this guy now. And so I got I got
- 13:04Speaker 5: sent thousands of thousands of head bands and people all
- 13:06Speaker 5: over the country, you know, just their names on them,
- 13:09Speaker 5: like Fred and Joe, you know, just and I decided
- 13:12Speaker 5: I'm gonna wear all charities because if they find me
- 13:14Speaker 5: for wearing a charity, they're really gonna look like assholes. So, uh, all,
- 13:20Speaker 5: you know, I had a whole but I don't know
- 13:21Speaker 5: how many I wore during the game, but every every
- 13:23Speaker 5: series was a new charity.
- 13:25Speaker 6: Wow.
- 13:26Speaker 5: But during the pre during the pregame, I had the
- 13:28Speaker 5: head ref chasing me around because I had the Adidas
- 13:30Speaker 5: went on and uh, he goes, I can't let you
- 13:33Speaker 5: on the field with that. I said, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Finally gets found of the you know, the national anthem.
- 13:39Speaker 5: You know, I'm standing there with Walter Payton, myself, the
- 13:41Speaker 5: head ref, And as soon as the anthem's over, I
- 13:44Speaker 5: go to put my helmet on. He goes, I can't
- 13:46Speaker 5: letch on the field, and I go, I know, but
- 13:49Speaker 5: you can't do a damn thing about this, And I
- 13:51Speaker 5: pulled it down around my neck and he just started laughing.
- 13:55Speaker 5: And you could see this thing. Every picture in the
- 13:57Speaker 5: Super Bowl you can see Adidas clear clear's day. And
- 14:00Speaker 5: he just starts laughing. He goes, you're right. I go,
- 14:02Speaker 5: I know, I'm right. I read the damn rule book.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Oh my equipment guy, give me the first headband. I
- 14:09Speaker 5: think it was JDF for juvenile diabetes. My attorney, Simmer
- 14:14Speaker 5: was a diabetic at the time. So I wore that,
- 14:15Speaker 5: and then every series after that it changed. You know,
- 14:18Speaker 5: I had hell had POW's. I had Children's Miracle Network,
- 14:23Speaker 5: I mean, you name it. I had it on there
- 14:25Speaker 5: and I got a lot of great, great press from
- 14:28Speaker 5: the people that I worked for. And I didn't get
- 14:30Speaker 5: buyed and I got paid for Adidas And I told
- 14:33Speaker 5: PC you made a big stink about nothing. This has
- 14:36Speaker 5: nothing to do with the game. But you guys are
- 14:38Speaker 5: trying to mess with me in the backfire.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Wow, Jim, I was looking up some of the things
- 14:45Speaker 4: about you. One of the things that I noticed was
- 14:48Speaker 4: that you know, and you're you're talking about it a
- 14:50Speaker 4: little bit now, you are really involved in a lot
- 14:54Speaker 4: of different callses that you that you feel that it
- 14:59Speaker 4: is that is worth your putting your name on it
- 15:03Speaker 4: being part of it. Can you talk a little bit
- 15:05Speaker 4: about some of those I know you you mentioned you
- 15:08Speaker 4: mentioned some of them when we're talking with Lisa, But
- 15:11Speaker 4: could you kind of give us an idea of like, like,
- 15:14Speaker 4: what are some of the organizations that you are part
- 15:16Speaker 4: of that you try to put your name with and
- 15:19Speaker 4: and and help sure.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Sure, I do a lot of a lot of stuff
- 15:22Speaker 5: of a military, all different branches. Uh, there's the Marines,
- 15:28Speaker 5: hope for the warriors, There's a Navy, seal uncommon grit
- 15:35Speaker 5: Saint Jude's Shriners, as I mean, uh, but the majority
- 15:41Speaker 5: of it is is with the military guys. I got
- 15:44Speaker 5: a you know, I've always had a great love for
- 15:45Speaker 5: those guys, and I've done so many great stuff with them.
- 15:48Speaker 5: I was actually in Iraq when they hung Sadam Hussein. Uh.
- 15:52Speaker 5: They wouldn't let us go to the hanging. That kind
- 15:54Speaker 5: of tosaw, but we were closed. But I've got to
- 15:58Speaker 5: you know, I flew in that six and a B
- 16:01Speaker 5: one bomber. I've been in you know, trainers and tankers,
- 16:04Speaker 5: and I've done so much cool stuff with them, and
- 16:08Speaker 5: driven most of our tanks, shot most of our weapons.
- 16:11Speaker 5: It's just been a blast. And they said, what do
- 16:13Speaker 5: you want to do that you haven't done yet? And
- 16:16Speaker 5: I said, get shot off an aircraft carrier and land
- 16:18Speaker 5: on one. I was playing with the chargers then. This
- 16:23Speaker 5: is back in like eighty nine, and I used to
- 16:27Speaker 5: go over to Miramar every Monday night that we weren't
- 16:29Speaker 5: playing and watch the game with the pilots and fly
- 16:31Speaker 5: the simulators and everything. So they had it set up.
- 16:35Speaker 5: If I would have went back to San Diego in
- 16:39Speaker 5: nineteen ninety, but I ended up going to Philadelphia with
- 16:41Speaker 5: Buddy Ryan and never got the chance. So but they
- 16:45Speaker 5: said anytime you want to do it, So it's I
- 16:48Speaker 5: still might do that.
- 16:49Speaker 7: N Now, speaking of that, after you got done playing
- 16:53Speaker 7: with Chicago, you had a couple of injuries and everything
- 16:55Speaker 7: like that, you end up, like you said, with the
- 16:58Speaker 7: Chargers and then and you Randall Cunningham goes out and
- 17:03Speaker 7: you end up having a great season or two with them,
- 17:07Speaker 7: getting comeback Player of the Year. So how was that
- 17:10Speaker 7: experience after you know, going through the Super Bowl kind
- 17:13Speaker 7: of having a rough time with injuries during your playing
- 17:15Speaker 7: career and didn't be able to have that success at
- 17:18Speaker 7: that level.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Again, Oh, it was great. That's the reason I went
- 17:21Speaker 5: to Philadelphia because I knew I knew Buddi's defense was.
- 17:25Speaker 5: In fact, it's the best defense I've seen other than
- 17:28Speaker 5: the Bear one, and I think that it might even
- 17:31Speaker 5: been a little bit better in some areas. So but
- 17:34Speaker 5: it was I thought they had a better chance of
- 17:36Speaker 5: getting back to the Super Bowl than the Chargers did
- 17:39Speaker 5: at that time. So that's why I ended up in Philly,
- 17:41Speaker 5: and then from Philly, I ended up in Minnesota with
- 17:45Speaker 5: you kid the playoffs, yees yeah, I do.
- 17:52Speaker 4: I do remember that and we and of course unfortunately
- 17:55Speaker 4: we didn't. We didn't do all that we needed to do,
- 17:58Speaker 4: that's for sure. Yeah, when you now, so looking back
- 18:04Speaker 4: your experience like and a lot of times players are
- 18:07Speaker 4: not really they don't necessarily Like for me, I wasn't
- 18:10Speaker 4: comfortable going to the Saints after my seasons with the Vikings.
- 18:15Speaker 4: But you seem to have fit in like everywhere that
- 18:19Speaker 4: you have gone and so so it never bothered you
- 18:25Speaker 4: going from another team to another. You just kind of
- 18:28Speaker 4: fit in.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Is that is that? Would that be the right judgment
- 18:31Speaker 2: on that looking from the outside.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Well, I never had a problem with people.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Well no, to me, I just thought it might have been.
- 18:38Speaker 5: The team from the first day maybe to the last.
- 18:42Speaker 5: So I'm not going to change. And uh, I think
- 18:45Speaker 5: people finally started realizing that even when I was in
- 18:50Speaker 5: you know, in Philly, after about a week, I remember
- 18:54Speaker 5: Keith Virus come up to me and apologize to me.
- 18:56Speaker 5: He goes, he goes, hey, man, I'm really sorry, and
- 18:58Speaker 5: I'm like, you know what happened? What I do? No, no, no,
- 19:01Speaker 5: I prejudged you before you got here. You know, I
- 19:05Speaker 5: had all these misconceptions about you. You know, you weren't
- 19:09Speaker 5: a serious ballplayer all this stuff, you know, And I'm like,
- 19:13Speaker 5: where did that come from? He goes, well, you know
- 19:14Speaker 5: the paper is the news. They said, Well, Ship, that's
- 19:16Speaker 5: what that's your problem? Can be relying on that?
- 19:22Speaker 6: Oh for sure?
- 19:23Speaker 5: It comes down can you play or do you know
- 19:25Speaker 5: what the hell you're talking about? And I always, uh,
- 19:28Speaker 5: I always felt that, you know, knowledge is confidence, So
- 19:30Speaker 5: I knew what I was doing, so I could say
- 19:33Speaker 5: what I wanted to say because I knew I knew
- 19:35Speaker 5: what I was going to do. And if my boys
- 19:37Speaker 5: up front block, We're going to win. Wasn't that Wasn't
- 19:41Speaker 5: that hard?
- 19:42Speaker 2: Oh?
- 19:43Speaker 6: Okay, so that's awesome, Jim. I have a question. You
- 19:46Speaker 6: alluded to this just a few minutes ago about head
- 19:49Speaker 6: coach Mike did and the defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan kind
- 19:53Speaker 6: of having tension between them, and you mentioned that kind
- 19:57Speaker 6: of it kind of overflowed into your practice, says, what
- 20:01Speaker 6: was the craziest player moment from those those battles that
- 20:05Speaker 6: you know, during during your practices for games that kind
- 20:08Speaker 6: of solidified your respect for all your teammates like Refrigerator
- 20:12Speaker 6: and Walter Payton. Were there any crazy plays.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Oh, there was literally fights on every play. Our practice
- 20:20Speaker 5: lasted three three plus hours because they were they're fight
- 20:23Speaker 5: every play. The best one who probably was Steve McMichael,
- 20:29Speaker 5: who you know or a p We just lost him
- 20:32Speaker 5: a few months ago in als, but he was a big,
- 20:36Speaker 5: strong man and played defensive tackle for US. And Jimbo
- 20:41Speaker 5: Cobt was my left tackle, and they got into it
- 20:44Speaker 5: and some punches were thrown all of a sudden, Jimbo
- 20:48Speaker 5: like I think he punched. He punched him and then
- 20:52Speaker 5: grabbed his space mask with the same hand and he
- 20:54Speaker 5: anke his space mask off and then punched him with
- 20:56Speaker 5: the other hand too, And that just kind of stopped everybody.
- 21:00Speaker 5: They went, Holy WHOA what they're like because our offense,
- 21:05Speaker 5: you know, they talk about how tough our defense was,
- 21:07Speaker 5: but our offensive line didn't take didn't take craft from nobody.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Well, and I was going to say, I was going
- 21:13Speaker 4: to say, jim like being a defensive guy. The offense
- 21:18Speaker 4: was not like a normal, like cute, finesse type of offense.
- 21:25Speaker 4: It was I mean, you guys on that side of
- 21:28Speaker 4: the ball was it was physical.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I mean it was a physical run game.
- 21:34Speaker 5: You had to be, yeah, had to be just to
- 21:36Speaker 5: just to play, just to practice, kid, That's why he
- 21:38Speaker 5: got us ready for the games. It was just you know.
- 21:41Speaker 5: And then I think the the best move they ever
- 21:43Speaker 5: made that they drafted our left guard Mark Bortz. He
- 21:47Speaker 5: was a defensive lineman out of Iowa and they drafted
- 21:49Speaker 5: him as a defensive lineman, but they moved him to offense.
- 21:53Speaker 5: And I think he brought that mentality with them to
- 21:55Speaker 5: the to the other guys. And then along with Kurt Becker,
- 21:58Speaker 5: Keith Van Horne, Covert, I mean, they were all here,
- 22:03Speaker 5: mean you gotta have that. That's because that's who you'
- 22:07Speaker 5: that's who you're blocking. There's over there in line.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Man, I wouldn't even I wouldn't even sit down when
- 22:18Speaker 4: like if if you're when the defense came up, like
- 22:20Speaker 4: I'm I'm watching you lost defense because man, I'm like
- 22:23Speaker 4: looking at that and I'm like, man, those guys are
- 22:27Speaker 4: like they're they're crazy.
- 22:31Speaker 5: So how was it like to inflict pain? That's for sure,
- 22:36Speaker 5: that's a fact.
- 22:37Speaker 7: Could could you give us some stories about you know,
- 22:40Speaker 7: Walter Payton, he was probably one of the greatest running
- 22:43Speaker 7: backs ever and fond memories of him and playing with
- 22:47Speaker 7: him in Chicago.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Jim don't tell. Don't tell no story of him running
- 22:50Speaker 4: over me, because that's out. Did you somebody else?
- 22:56Speaker 5: He was. He was a treat to play with. Man.
- 22:58Speaker 5: He was never one of those guys that say, hey,
- 23:00Speaker 5: don't give me the ball. You know I need the ball.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Never never really said a word other than my first start.
- 23:07Speaker 5: I think it was against Detroit my rookie year. I
- 23:11Speaker 5: think it was right after the strike and uh, you
- 23:15Speaker 5: know we were we were notorious third and long. We
- 23:17Speaker 5: We're going to run sweep with Walter Right. Everybody in
- 23:19Speaker 5: the league knew it. I could hear the guys in
- 23:21Speaker 5: the huddle and he said, hey, watch the sweep. Right.
- 23:24Speaker 5: I get up to the line of scrimmage and there's
- 23:27Speaker 5: literally nine guys on my right side waiting for the sweep.
- 23:31Speaker 5: I got a defensive tackle and a weak side linebacker
- 23:34Speaker 5: to my left I got. I got three on two
- 23:36Speaker 5: right there. Easy. So I'm trying to think of this.
- 23:38Speaker 5: It was just a simple of tackle play to the fullback,
- 23:42Speaker 5: which we've run a thousand times in training camp. Right,
- 23:45Speaker 5: everybody knows the play, but our numbering system was back asked,
- 23:50Speaker 5: was from what I learned from Little League until I
- 23:52Speaker 5: got to Chicago. You know, even numbers. We were to
- 23:55Speaker 5: the right, Odd was to the left. Chicago was reversed.
- 23:58Speaker 5: The Pallas, whose head coach was Landry was defensive guy,
- 24:03Speaker 5: and that's how he numbered it, and so it finally
- 24:06Speaker 5: clicked in. And then the number happened to be thirty four.
- 24:09Speaker 5: So I said two thirty four in my left card.
- 24:13Speaker 5: He looks up at him and he goes, thirty four.
- 24:15Speaker 4: What the hell thirty four?
- 24:18Speaker 5: He wasn't in the game plan that week, right, But
- 24:21Speaker 5: it's a play everybody knows. I said, Boots, you were
- 24:23Speaker 5: running right there block his ass. So I give it.
- 24:25Speaker 5: I think it was like third and six or something,
- 24:28Speaker 5: and I give it to two. He gets like eight
- 24:30Speaker 5: yards for first down. So I'm coming back to the
- 24:33Speaker 5: huddle and Noah grabs me. He says, youngster, you got
- 24:35Speaker 5: any more surprises for me? And I said, well, I said,
- 24:40Speaker 5: I'm not running into a brick wall, dude, keep your
- 24:42Speaker 5: ears open. And as I'm getting into the huddle, Walter
- 24:46Speaker 5: says it to me. It's the only time we talked
- 24:48Speaker 5: to me on the field. He said, hey, keep doing
- 24:50Speaker 5: what you're doing. He goes, I don't want to run
- 24:52Speaker 5: into that either. I don't think they ever changed the
- 24:56Speaker 5: play for the poor guy. Before I got there, I go,
- 24:58Speaker 5: it's ridiculous and try to run into that.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Oh that's great, but yeah, that's that.
- 25:04Speaker 5: I mean, he was just and he's made some of
- 25:06Speaker 5: the best thirty yard runs and only gained the yard. Yes,
- 25:10Speaker 5: for sure, sideline to sideline. He just did not like
- 25:13Speaker 5: to be tackled.
- 25:14Speaker 4: And and you know, and one of the other things
- 25:17Speaker 4: I can remember outside after after one of the games,
- 25:20Speaker 4: I my son got a chance to meet him, and
- 25:25Speaker 4: he was so genuine of a person that I you know,
- 25:30Speaker 4: I think when when people think of a great athlete
- 25:33Speaker 4: or a good football player, hard nos football player, he
- 25:37Speaker 4: was all of those things. But he was a legitimately
- 25:41Speaker 4: great man.
- 25:43Speaker 5: Yeah, nice real nice guy. Yeah, boy.
- 25:47Speaker 6: Like that.
- 25:48Speaker 4: Yeah, And I just think I just thought that was
- 25:53Speaker 4: really special.
- 25:56Speaker 6: He was a tough guy. Yeah. Hey, So, since we're
- 25:59Speaker 6: going down memory lane with Walter Peyton, I'm going to
- 26:01Speaker 6: go a little bit further back to b YU again, Jim,
- 26:03Speaker 6: if you don't mind, and ask you about Andy Reid.
- 26:06Speaker 6: Was he one of your college teammates at b YU?
- 26:09Speaker 5: Yes, he was. Okay, my tackles and tackles in nineteen eighty. Yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 5: think he came there. I believe he came there in
- 26:16Speaker 5: seventy nine, which was my red shirt year. I played
- 26:19Speaker 5: with him in nineteen eighty Yep, sure did.
- 26:21Speaker 6: What was he like, did you guys have a close
- 26:23Speaker 6: friendship or yeah?
- 26:26Speaker 5: Yeah, we got real close. One time he got me drilled.
- 26:29Speaker 5: He kind of missed this guy in this conference and
- 26:32Speaker 5: I looked up and his was the first face I saw.
- 26:35Speaker 5: That was your guy. Yep, sorry about that. So other
- 26:38Speaker 5: than that, yeah, he did well. He was a scrapper.
- 26:42Speaker 5: I loved what he's done as a coach. I mean,
- 26:43Speaker 5: he's got to love the next offensive lineman. Likes to
- 26:46Speaker 5: throw the ball.
- 26:47Speaker 6: Absolutely, he loves that.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Jim when you when you when you watch the games,
- 26:54Speaker 4: now go to the games. Now do you see do
- 26:58Speaker 4: you see a difference a major difference in the game?
- 27:02Speaker 4: And if so, like what what do you see and do?
- 27:05Speaker 4: And then maybe even to the point of do you
- 27:08Speaker 4: like what you see of where the game's going now?
- 27:12Speaker 5: Well, the other day is when I saw more football
- 27:16Speaker 5: on Saturday whenever the Bears played the Packers. I saw
- 27:21Speaker 5: that tast half and then about the last five minutes
- 27:24Speaker 5: of the game and that's all I saw all season,
- 27:26Speaker 5: so other than knowing that they throw the ball a
- 27:29Speaker 5: lot more than they did back when we played, which
- 27:32Speaker 5: I would have liked to do because that's what I
- 27:33Speaker 5: did coming out of college, was throw the ball. But
- 27:36Speaker 5: you know, I got stuck in that offense.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Well, yeah, because when we were when we were first
- 27:42Speaker 4: into the league, I mean, there wasn't like you you
- 27:45Speaker 4: might throw twelve to fifteen times in a game, and everything.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Else was running.
- 27:51Speaker 4: I don't know if people really realized that the defenses
- 27:55Speaker 4: were set really basically for the run and accept whatever
- 28:00Speaker 4: took place in the past because you didn't really throw
- 28:03Speaker 4: the ball. And then until teams started kind of doing
- 28:06Speaker 4: like some of that hurry up stuff and all that,
- 28:09Speaker 4: that was really like those kind of teams were the
- 28:11Speaker 4: only ones who were really throwing the ball. Everybody else
- 28:14Speaker 4: had a big running back and and just it was
- 28:17Speaker 4: just pounding it every almost every other every other.
- 28:20Speaker 5: Play, right right. It was very boring.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Imagine for me, it wasn't very good. I because I mean.
- 28:31Speaker 4: I'm out there trying to and I'm and I've said
- 28:35Speaker 4: this to the crew exactly, and I've told the crew
- 28:41Speaker 4: man my experience with Peyton was not a good one. Man,
- 28:47Speaker 4: it was not a good one. And and it was
- 28:50Speaker 4: in I was playing safety. It was the year that
- 28:52Speaker 4: I played safety in my I think my second year,
- 28:55Speaker 4: and and man like it just like the the front
- 28:59Speaker 4: just open and I'm playing at free safety and I'm
- 29:02Speaker 4: like thinking, and I wanted to get back to free safety.
- 29:04Speaker 4: I thought I was like a tackler. I was a
- 29:07Speaker 4: you know, I was that dude, right, I can hit you. Yeah,
- 29:10Speaker 4: and Jim, man, it just popped open and I'm looking
- 29:14Speaker 4: at him and I'm already My first thought was like,
- 29:17Speaker 4: he's not gonna he's not gonna get off track. He's
- 29:20Speaker 4: not gonna make a move on me. There's no real
- 29:22Speaker 4: reason for him to even think about making a move
- 29:27Speaker 4: for me. So I know he's gonna run me over.
- 29:28Speaker 4: So man, I'm running. I'm giving everything I got. Man,
- 29:33Speaker 4: I hit him, my whole body just like stopped. I
- 29:39Speaker 4: started and I started going on my way back. The
- 29:44Speaker 4: only reason he failed was because he tripped over me.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Like I didn't.
- 29:48Speaker 4: I love to claim like I hit him and I
- 29:50Speaker 4: tackled him, but no, man, he tripped over me. And
- 29:54Speaker 4: to me, when people ask me who was the best
- 29:56Speaker 4: running back, I've ever played against it's him.
- 30:00Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he would. He definitely lay a pop on
- 30:03Speaker 5: you if he could. He use that elbow too.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that was yeah, that was a punch really yeah,
- 30:10Speaker 2: that was more. Yeah, that was more of a punch.
- 30:12Speaker 5: He was strong, Oh my gosh.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Yes.
- 30:15Speaker 4: And and that's even really before weights were a big
- 30:19Speaker 4: deal in the you know, like working out every all
- 30:24Speaker 4: three days or three days of the week and all
- 30:26Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. That was really before everybody was
- 30:29Speaker 4: really dying into into the weights getting stronger. That was
- 30:34Speaker 4: just to me that I felt like that was mostly
- 30:36Speaker 4: natural for him.
- 30:39Speaker 5: No, he worked, he worked out. He ran up and
- 30:41Speaker 5: down this big ass hill behind his house. He ran
- 30:45Speaker 5: up and down there. He tried to get me out there, said, dude,
- 30:47Speaker 5: if I got to run up that al gonna win.
- 30:52Speaker 5: Those big boys get paid.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Hey, Joe, we're gonna take a quick break and we'll
- 30:59Speaker 2: be right back. Okay.

- 32:27Speaker 4: so we'll see what his response is after we hear it.
- 32:49Speaker 5: Well, they called me sweetness, and I like to dance
- 32:52Speaker 5: running the balls like mans.
- 32:54Speaker 4: We had to go to his train in camp to
- 32:56Speaker 4: give Chicagold champion.
- 32:58Speaker 2: And we're not doing this ts with Greening. The Bears
- 33:01Speaker 2: are doing it. Defeat the need it. We didn't come
- 33:04Speaker 2: here look for truck, were just people.
- 33:07Speaker 5: I'm the preky cubbing on as mcmahn. When I hit
- 33:10Speaker 5: the turch, I've got no plan.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I just rolled my body all the way I can.
- 33:15Speaker 5: Then that's when I control the field.
- 33:17Speaker 8: I motivate the cats that I like to GEVs.
- 33:19Speaker 4: I play so cool like a the please.
- 33:21Speaker 5: That's why you all got here on the double to
- 33:24Speaker 5: catch me doing the Summer Bowl shovel.
- 33:28Speaker 9: Jim.
- 33:28Speaker 6: I do not understand how your musical career didn't take
- 33:31Speaker 6: off after that.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I mean, what happened?
- 33:34Speaker 5: I don't know. We had a gold record, the playing video,
- 33:37Speaker 5: and we lost the Grammy to print that year. I
- 33:42Speaker 5: guess that's not too bad, nose, you might as well
- 33:46Speaker 5: lose the print.
- 33:47Speaker 2: I'll give you that.
- 33:48Speaker 6: So let me ask you this though, Jim, those were
- 33:50Speaker 6: the kind of things that your teams remembered for. I mean,
- 33:52Speaker 6: not only winning the Super Bowl the eighty five Bears,
- 33:55Speaker 6: but just the kind of bravado that came with you guys.
- 33:57Speaker 6: I mean, was that something that you guys just naturally
- 34:00Speaker 6: fell into or was it something that you deliberately did
- 34:03Speaker 6: to get in your opponent's heads. Was it a combination?
- 34:06Speaker 6: I mean, was that just was it just fun?
- 34:09Speaker 5: We had a lot of very competent players. We had
- 34:12Speaker 5: a lot of competent people, and we knew we were good.
- 34:16Speaker 5: I mean, we had a good five year run. It
- 34:18Speaker 5: wasn't like we just away in eighty five, right, right,
- 34:21Speaker 5: that's true. But you know, we just thought when they
- 34:24Speaker 5: came that idea came to us, you know where we
- 34:27Speaker 5: go had a friend in the music business and he said, look,
- 34:29Speaker 5: we're going to do this record. They said, record and
- 34:33Speaker 5: the proceeds will feed the homeless on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- 34:37Speaker 5: That's where we're thinking that We thought maybe just be
- 34:39Speaker 5: like a little local thing. You know, nobody thought it
- 34:42Speaker 5: would turn into what it did. But uh yeah, that's
- 34:46Speaker 5: the reason that we did it. And you know, after
- 34:49Speaker 5: we did the record, the guys that had speaking parts,
- 34:51Speaker 5: they came to us two weeks after that and said, hey,
- 34:53Speaker 5: now we got to do a video. We're like, what
- 35:00Speaker 5: the deal was a record? Oh no, nowadays when you
- 35:02Speaker 5: do a record, you get into a video. Well, that
- 35:04Speaker 5: ain't part of the deal. I ain't going myself and
- 35:09Speaker 5: Walter actually didn't go. And they actually filmed that at
- 35:13Speaker 5: the day after we lost to Miami on Monday night
- 35:16Speaker 5: down to Miami, So we got home like at three
- 35:18Speaker 5: or four. They guys had to be at the studio
- 35:20Speaker 5: I think at nine and they were there for eight
- 35:23Speaker 5: ten hours I think. And yeah, so then Walter and
- 35:28Speaker 5: I had to eventually do our parts of the racquetball
- 35:31Speaker 5: court at Hallis Hall after practice one day, so you
- 35:34Speaker 5: see up there's a couple of guys doing But it
- 35:40Speaker 5: turned out, you know, we still had four games, four
- 35:42Speaker 5: or five games left to play in the season, so
- 35:44Speaker 5: if we don't win, we're going to look like idiots.
- 35:47Speaker 6: Oh wow, So that was pre recorded. It wasn't like
- 35:49Speaker 6: right before the Super Bowl.
- 35:51Speaker 5: Oh no, oh okay, And as people were putting it
- 35:55Speaker 5: up on their locker rooms going look at they're.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Going to say, yeah, absolutely, because I can tell you
- 36:02Speaker 4: the first time I heard it and saw it, oh,
- 36:05Speaker 4: I hated it, Like I was like, what's going on
- 36:10Speaker 4: with them?
- 36:10Speaker 2: What makes them think they're so special? I'm like, why
- 36:14Speaker 2: is that happen?
- 36:15Speaker 6: And tell us how you really feel, Carl, Well, no,
- 36:18Speaker 6: it was like once you.
- 36:20Speaker 4: You from the beginning, you already don't like the Bears,
- 36:24Speaker 4: you know, because they're they're the team that you got
- 36:26Speaker 4: to beat.
- 36:27Speaker 2: And now that they're good, and you know that they're good,
- 36:31Speaker 2: you don't really want to give it me any good.
- 36:34Speaker 2: And now they're dancing.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Now they're dancing there all of that, they're all over
- 36:38Speaker 4: the television dancing and singing.
- 36:41Speaker 2: What else could you think? Like what else? Like what
- 36:44Speaker 2: else can they do? Like what else can they do
- 36:46Speaker 2: to make a team not like them?
- 36:53Speaker 4: Because I have to assume everybody who saw it, and
- 36:57Speaker 4: everybody that you all played, whoever those last games were,
- 37:02Speaker 4: it was all about like, oh, let's show them, you know,
- 37:05Speaker 4: and yeah, yeah, and any and and again anybody could
- 37:11Speaker 4: use anything that you needed anything to motivate you to
- 37:15Speaker 4: go for the Bears because they were just that good
- 37:18Speaker 4: and you needed something to motivate your team to be like,
- 37:21Speaker 4: oh we got to get them because they said this,
- 37:23Speaker 4: or they're out there dancing and having fun and all
- 37:26Speaker 4: that kind of stuff.
- 37:27Speaker 2: It didn't change anything though.
- 37:30Speaker 4: Unfortunately it didn't change I mean it was to me,
- 37:33Speaker 4: it was really one of those kind of situations where
- 37:36Speaker 4: it was the perfect team doing all of the perfect things,
- 37:42Speaker 4: not even knowing what the what the cause was, you know,
- 37:45Speaker 4: I didn't know that it was all four different charities
- 37:48Speaker 4: and things, but it but at the end of the day,
- 37:53Speaker 4: everything that they did, they could back it up. Anything
- 37:56Speaker 4: they said, they could back it up. And when when
- 38:00Speaker 4: you can't change it, it is what it is.
- 38:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that.
- 38:05Speaker 4: I mean again, to me, I don't think there's a
- 38:08Speaker 4: team today that would even be willing to get on
- 38:14Speaker 4: the field and play that team in its prime.
- 38:18Speaker 2: M I just don't. I don't think it's possible.
- 38:21Speaker 5: Yeah. So, like I said, I'd line up with those
- 38:25Speaker 5: guys against anybody.
- 38:27Speaker 6: Yes, I don't blame you man, So so Jim, we
- 38:30Speaker 6: had some audience interaction, We had some questions that we
- 38:34Speaker 6: received before the interview with you today tonight, and one
- 38:38Speaker 6: was and you referred to playing with the Packers at
- 38:41Speaker 6: one point in your career, and did you play with
- 38:44Speaker 6: Brett Favre at any time when you were there? Yes, yeah, okay, well.
- 38:51Speaker 5: Year and a half, a year and four or five
- 38:52Speaker 5: games yet Okay.
- 38:53Speaker 6: So someone was wanting to know what it was like
- 38:55Speaker 6: playing with him.
- 38:58Speaker 5: Was from he's a competitive he's Luke prankster. You'd like
- 39:02Speaker 5: to have a good time, you'd like to laugh, and
- 39:04Speaker 5: you did a great job for us. I told him,
- 39:07Speaker 5: just don't screw it up, because it was all set
- 39:09Speaker 5: up for us perfectly. It was just like what happened
- 39:12Speaker 5: in Chicago. We lost the championship game in eighty four,
- 39:16Speaker 5: came back in eighty five and won it, and then
- 39:18Speaker 5: and then ninety five. That's what happened to us. We
- 39:20Speaker 5: lost the NMC championship. And so while we were in
- 39:23Speaker 5: training camp, the schedule came out and I noticed that
- 39:27Speaker 5: the Super Bowl was back in New Orleans and it
- 39:29Speaker 5: was actually on the same day that we had played
- 39:31Speaker 5: eleven years prior.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Wow.
- 39:34Speaker 5: And then we ended up playing against the same team.
- 39:37Speaker 9: Wow.
- 39:38Speaker 5: We talked about some days of boos, but at least
- 39:41Speaker 5: there was nobody trying to shoot me then that time.
- 39:45Speaker 5: I try to stay out of the news.
- 39:47Speaker 6: Yeah, we're sure.
- 39:50Speaker 4: Do you do you think when you when you look
- 39:52Speaker 4: back and you you see that team and you see
- 39:57Speaker 4: those players, and I know, you know, maybe there may
- 40:00Speaker 4: have been some of the players may have moved on Gulf, But.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Is that bond.
- 40:06Speaker 4: I mean, that's a bond that it's it's very difficult
- 40:09Speaker 4: to break. I know when we went to the NFC
- 40:11Speaker 4: Championship game and even though we lost it, like those
- 40:16Speaker 4: guys on that team, there is such a bond that
- 40:20Speaker 4: you you can never lose. And and and I don't
- 40:23Speaker 4: know if that's just a football thing or just a
- 40:26Speaker 4: sports thing, but I don't, you know, I don't know
- 40:28Speaker 4: if the public realizes like how strong of a bond
- 40:33Speaker 4: you get and you build when you're spending that time
- 40:37Speaker 4: in the locker room, on the field, you're going through
- 40:39Speaker 4: highs and you're going through lows. You end up finding
- 40:43Speaker 4: yourself loving every one of those dudes that you that
- 40:47Speaker 4: you're around every day. And I can't imagine just how
- 40:51Speaker 4: you guys played, I can only imagine the bond that
- 40:54Speaker 4: you must have.
- 40:56Speaker 5: Yeah, it's still strong. And I saw the guys opening weekend.
- 41:01Speaker 5: I think it was against the Vikings, wasn't it. Didn't
- 41:04Speaker 5: they play Monday night in Chicago? Yes, I'm pretty sure alumni.
- 41:09Speaker 5: We had our alumni this weekend. Okay, anniversary that night.
- 41:13Speaker 5: So I got to see all the guys that I
- 41:14Speaker 5: haven't seen in probably thirty years. And it's still the same,
- 41:17Speaker 5: you know, the same old locker room. You know, jokes,
- 41:20Speaker 5: and how's everybody feeling? You should have seen this all
- 41:23Speaker 5: limp out though, I mean, we look, I understand that you.
- 41:29Speaker 6: Know who's undefeated, Jim, it's it's father Tom right, he's
- 41:33Speaker 6: down in no doubt.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Well, Jim, we'll we'll let you go. And man, I
- 41:41Speaker 4: totally appreciate it. And I'm hoping that we'll get to
- 41:44Speaker 4: see each other. I know buddy will have something going
- 41:48Speaker 4: and we'll we'll meet back up in Minneapolis.
- 41:51Speaker 5: All right, brother sounds great?
- 41:52Speaker 2: All right, I appreciate it.
- 41:53Speaker 6: Thank you Jim so much.
- 41:56Speaker 5: You're welcome.
- 41:56Speaker 6: Have a good night.
- 42:03Speaker 4: So I'm very colorful, yes, And and what's what's interesting
- 42:11Speaker 4: to me is like he can be even more.
- 42:17Speaker 6: Like I'll call it colorful, flamboyant.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and and and and I don't know if it
- 42:24Speaker 2: was just like him just being you know, just wanting
- 42:26Speaker 2: to be cool. Just do the interview.
- 42:28Speaker 4: But like I said, I'll get a chance to see
- 42:31Speaker 4: him sometime whenever we get a chance to be back
- 42:34Speaker 4: in Minnesota.
- 42:35Speaker 2: But he is such like a such could do man
- 42:37Speaker 2: like like. I can tell that and when like and
- 42:40Speaker 2: you would think somebody as notable as him.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Wouldn't want to sit around and sign autographs from you know,
- 42:48Speaker 4: these everybody running around trying to get an autograph.
- 42:51Speaker 2: He is so cool with it. Yeah, you know, he
- 42:54Speaker 2: has no issues with it, and.
- 42:57Speaker 6: He seems like a very caring person.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Like he's just a great He's just a he's he's
- 43:03Speaker 4: not what most people would think a star would be,
- 43:08Speaker 4: you know.
- 43:08Speaker 2: And I consider him a star, oh sure.
- 43:11Speaker 4: And and and a and a and a a an
- 43:14Speaker 4: example of the greatest quarterbacks you know during that time.
- 43:21Speaker 4: And yet he'll come on this show, he'll meet up
- 43:26Speaker 4: with people and talk to people, answer questions with him.
- 43:30Speaker 4: And to me, you think that there's a lot of
- 43:34Speaker 4: people like that who has his background who would not
- 43:39Speaker 4: do that. They wouldn't take the time and for whatever
- 43:42Speaker 4: that reason, a good, bad or indifferent why they don't
- 43:44Speaker 4: do it. It amazes me that he would do it.
- 43:49Speaker 4: Like even when I called, like he was like, oh yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 4: I'll do it, you know, let me know.
- 43:53Speaker 6: You know, no hesitation wasn't you guys played what what
- 43:57Speaker 6: years did you guys play together?
- 43:58Speaker 2: He came in in eighty two. I came in in
- 44:01Speaker 2: eighty three, so that.
- 44:02Speaker 6: Was before he went to the Bears.
- 44:04Speaker 2: And no, yeah, he he just got to the he
- 44:08Speaker 2: when I got there, he was with the bass. Okay, okay,
- 44:10Speaker 2: you know, and and I'm telling you man, he he
- 44:15Speaker 2: he doesn't. He didn't say it out loud. He was
- 44:21Speaker 2: like he was the man on that team. Yeah, you know, like.
- 44:26Speaker 4: You had Singletary, you know, he and I and I
- 44:29Speaker 4: and I looked at Singletary as like the guy who's
- 44:31Speaker 4: running the defense, right, and you see mc mahon he's
- 44:35Speaker 4: running the offense.
- 44:36Speaker 2: But when you start to think about, like, well, who's
- 44:37Speaker 2: running the team? Yeah, who is the man?
- 44:40Speaker 5: Right?
- 44:41Speaker 2: One of them have to be.
- 44:42Speaker 4: Somebody has to be the man. To me, in my vision,
- 44:47Speaker 4: it was him, yeah, and it and it wasn't a
- 44:50Speaker 4: power trip, right.
- 44:52Speaker 2: It was like let's go, guys, we can do this,
- 44:55Speaker 2: you know. It was a different kind of leadership. Yeah
- 45:00Speaker 2: that I think.
- 45:02Speaker 5: You don't.
- 45:03Speaker 2: You don't.
- 45:03Speaker 4: You don't see now, like he was leading by example
- 45:09Speaker 4: and he's he's asking you, come on, Lisa, let's go,
- 45:11Speaker 4: come on, we can do this.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, not like come on, let's go, let's go.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Like it wasn't really like that, it was it was.
- 45:18Speaker 4: A different it appeared to be different than that, and
- 45:22Speaker 4: just a cool like like I'll do anything for him.
- 45:26Speaker 2: You know, like he could get you to the point of.
- 45:28Speaker 6: Like he's just got that type of personality and leadership
- 45:33Speaker 6: and leadership right right that.
- 45:35Speaker 2: I think that is the craziest.
- 45:37Speaker 6: And I really was interested when I asked him about
- 45:39Speaker 6: the head band story. I didn't realize that there was
- 45:41Speaker 6: that much into it. I didn't realize that he had
- 45:44Speaker 6: been penalized for the first one and then after that
- 45:48Speaker 6: he's like, well, I'll just wear charities. They can't do
- 45:49Speaker 6: anything about that, and she was pretty cool. I didn't
- 45:52Speaker 6: realize the whole history behind that.
- 45:53Speaker 2: But again, even in that.
- 45:57Speaker 4: He's standing up for right, he's standing up for having
- 46:01Speaker 4: the opportunity to represent, to to make sure people see
- 46:07Speaker 4: these things that matter to him because it matters to
- 46:11Speaker 4: other people.
- 46:12Speaker 2: It's going to impact other people.
- 46:13Speaker 6: And he got creative with the indeedst one sitting in
- 46:16Speaker 6: around his neck because he knew said he read the book.
- 46:18Speaker 6: So that was a really interesting story.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Who who reads the Who who reads the rule books
- 46:25Speaker 2: to see how to break it?
- 46:27Speaker 6: Obvious?
- 46:28Speaker 4: And and and and again he's not breaking it for
- 46:32Speaker 4: himself just to just to be bragging, just to say
- 46:35Speaker 4: I want to do this. He's pooving a point and
- 46:38Speaker 4: and and doing it for something that matters, right, And
- 46:42Speaker 4: to me, I don't know if you can. I don't
- 46:45Speaker 4: know if you can take anything away from that. And
- 46:51Speaker 4: and to me, it's it's more of it just shows
- 46:54Speaker 4: who he really is from.
- 46:56Speaker 6: What you step for, what he believes in period, and
- 46:59Speaker 6: you can and and and to me, what what that?
- 47:02Speaker 4: What that shows as we promote, as we promoted his
- 47:06Speaker 4: name out as you know, going to be on the show,
- 47:11Speaker 4: we're promoting him as that football player, right, but he's
- 47:16Speaker 4: bigger than that.
- 47:16Speaker 6: Yes, yes, which is what this show is all about.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Y I enjoy that.
- 47:21Speaker 4: Yeah, he's so much What what we got to see,
- 47:23Speaker 4: what we got to hear and what we what I
- 47:26Speaker 4: hope that the listeners get is he's he's he's different
- 47:31Speaker 4: than who.
- 47:31Speaker 2: You thought he was.
- 47:33Speaker 4: If you've seen him play, if you saw the clips
- 47:35Speaker 4: of him saying this, or him in the in the
- 47:38Speaker 4: in the shuffle and all that kind of stuff, you
- 47:40Speaker 4: see all those things, right, But the reality of it
- 47:47Speaker 4: was for something else, something bigger, what he thought was
- 47:50Speaker 4: bigger than him.
- 47:52Speaker 6: Very very very down to earth. I like, I liked
- 47:56Speaker 6: I liked him a lot. Yeah, that was that was
- 47:58Speaker 6: we need to have him back on. Yeah, we may
- 48:03Speaker 6: have to go down the road and and and try
- 48:04Speaker 6: to find another way, because.
- 48:06Speaker 4: I would like to have a I'd like to have
- 48:07Speaker 4: a couple of quarterbacks, like one somewhat closer to now
- 48:13Speaker 4: versus someone back in the day. And then the way
- 48:16Speaker 4: Jim was like a tough guy anyway, Like he wasn't
- 48:19Speaker 4: like the cute quarterback, you know, he was like that.
- 48:23Speaker 2: You know, he was a dog, you know. And and
- 48:26Speaker 2: I hate to say this, but a lot of quarterbacks
- 48:28Speaker 2: today are not dogs.
- 48:31Speaker 6: That's pretty much.
- 48:34Speaker 4: And yeah, and and yeah, and I'd like I kind
- 48:39Speaker 4: of like to see the difference, the difference in how
- 48:42Speaker 4: they think. Yeah, you know, you know, I mean when
- 48:47Speaker 4: you when Jim talks, he talks about his team, Yeah,
- 48:51Speaker 4: how they work. Some of the cute quarterbacks, talk about
- 48:55Speaker 4: them good, you know, and you know I do this
- 48:59Speaker 4: and you know, and I make sure I do these
- 49:00Speaker 4: kind of things and da da da da da. But
- 49:05Speaker 4: that's a championship guy right there. That's a you know,
- 49:08Speaker 4: that's a guy.
- 49:09Speaker 6: That's one in a million. Yeah, to me, I don't
- 49:11Speaker 6: think they make them like him anymore.
- 49:13Speaker 4: And I don't think you. I don't think there's been
- 49:15Speaker 4: a team. I don't think there will be a team
- 49:19Speaker 4: that will ever be like that group of Chicago Bears team.
- 49:27Speaker 4: I think that was probably the best once in a
- 49:30Speaker 4: lifetime team. You know, Vikings have some great teams back
- 49:34Speaker 4: in the day. They're once in a lifetime there. But
- 49:37Speaker 4: I think this Bears team was amazing and couldn't just.
- 49:43Speaker 6: The names, I mean, the names that came from that
- 49:46Speaker 6: that that super Bowl team that they're just household names,
- 49:49Speaker 6: I mean, you know, and it's more than one.
- 49:51Speaker 2: So that's the crazy thing.
- 49:52Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the crazy.
- 49:53Speaker 4: That's when you know it's that's when you know it's good.
- 49:55Speaker 4: Is when you know most you can almost name all
- 49:59Speaker 4: the players on that team playing in the position and
- 50:02Speaker 4: still can and still can years later, years later. All Right, well,
- 50:06Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna get out of here and
- 50:08Speaker 4: hope you enjoyed the show and we will see you
- 50:10Speaker 4: again next week.
