Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And again, remember, with the war, it's just artificial.
- 0:03Speaker 2: It's a little bit high. It's a small price to
- 0:05Speaker 2: pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe.
- 0:09Speaker 2: They can take out a city. Let them take out
- 0:13Speaker 2: Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. This is
- 0:17Speaker 2: a very small price to pay.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And it's going to be over very soon.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It's essentially almost over with.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And they might keep going a little long. You know,
- 0:26Speaker 1: they always say they have a big threshold for pain.
- 0:28Speaker 1: They need it. Let me tell you, they need it.
- 0:30Speaker 1: But it's going to end very soon.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And it'll end one way or the other. And your
- 0:34Speaker 2: gas and your gasoline and all of the things.
- 0:39Speaker 3: President Trump last night in Nebraska, again, trying to justify
- 0:43Speaker 3: the higher prices Americans are paying for fuel and other goods,
- 0:48Speaker 3: while also just casually calling for Iran to attack two
- 0:53Speaker 3: of the most populous cities in the United States.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Joe.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, Joe.
- 1:01Speaker 5: There will be some, oh, he's just joking. He's just, well, okay, well, great.
- 1:05Speaker 5: Tell me then, please, what other American president in our history,
- 1:11Speaker 5: post-Civil War, have called for the destruction of entire cities?
- 1:17Speaker 4: Joking.
- 1:18Speaker 5: If this is your joke, if this is your idea
- 1:20Speaker 5: of a presidential joke, joking about the killing of 10
- 1:23Speaker 5: million or.
- 1:24Speaker 1: So people, Is that is that where we are?
- 1:29Speaker 5: Because I thought it was bad enough when he was
- 1:31Speaker 5: joking in front of California Republicans several years ago. I
- 1:34Speaker 5: think it was in 22 about an elderly man getting
- 1:38Speaker 5: the hell beaten out of him and almost dying.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Paul Pelosi.
- 1:43Speaker 5: Remember, and he led those California and they were just
- 1:45Speaker 5: laughing their asses off, thinking that's just the funniest thing
- 1:48Speaker 5: in the world. Talking about the brutalization and near killing
- 1:51Speaker 5: of a man who, by the way, a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 5: people on the MAGA right spent about a week suggesting,
- 1:56Speaker 5: you know, drumming up rumors.
- 1:59Speaker 1: About Paul Pelosi, the man who was the victim of it.
- 2:01Speaker 5: So I thought that was pretty bad, Willie, when you're
- 2:04Speaker 5: joking about the battering and the abusing of an elderly man,
- 2:09Speaker 5: almost killing an elderly man. I've got to say, a
- 2:12Speaker 5: president of the United States, we're not talking about Henny
- 2:15Speaker 5: Youngman here.
- 2:17Speaker 1: We're not talking about Jack Payne. We're talking about the president.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Of the United States talking about the obliteration of San
- 2:24Speaker 5: Diego and Los Angeles as a joke. That's what I've
- 2:28Speaker 5: already heard this morning. Oh, he was just joking. You
- 2:30Speaker 5: people just don't get it. No, I don't get when
- 2:33Speaker 5: the president of the United States says Iran can obliterate
- 2:38Speaker 5: Los Angeles.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And San Diego.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Not funny if you're an American who actually believes that
- 2:46Speaker 5: presidents should do more than divide us.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Yeah, and this is sort of the response and the
- 2:52Speaker 6: reaction when the president says something like this over the years.
- 2:55Speaker 6: Immediately his team or those who defend him on podcasts
- 2:58Speaker 6: or social media say he owned the media, he owned
- 3:01Speaker 6: the left because they got upset about the thing he said. Well, yeah,
- 3:04Speaker 6: there are certain things that you ought to be upset about.
- 3:06Speaker 6: And if he was joking, what's the joke? I mean,
- 3:10Speaker 6: I'm happy if there's a joke in there somewhere. I
- 3:13Speaker 6: don't understand what the joke is. And embedded in that
- 3:16Speaker 6: alleged joke, embedded in the alleged joke is, Well, California
- 3:20Speaker 6: is blue.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Those are lefties.
- 3:22Speaker 6: So let them bomb L.A. and San Diego. We've got
- 3:25Speaker 6: to protect Omaha and the places I care about. That's
- 3:28Speaker 6: not the voice, obviously, of an American president. And as
- 3:32Speaker 6: you say, Joe, it goes without saying that if any
- 3:35Speaker 6: other president, especially a Democrat, let's say Barack Obama, for example,
- 3:39Speaker 6: or Joe Biden made that joke, there would be outrage
- 3:44Speaker 6: across the board and maybe calls for impeachment.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Well, of course, there'd be calls for impeachment if he
- 3:50Speaker 5: called for the obliteration of, say, Jacksonville or Birmingham or
- 3:54Speaker 5: if it were if it were a Democratic president calling
- 3:58Speaker 5: for the obliteration of Republican cities.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Of course, of course, there'd be immediate calls. for impeachment.
- 4:07Speaker 5: But again, this is what, and by the way, the president,
- 4:10Speaker 5: Jonathan Lemire, calling for the destruction of two American cities
- 4:15Speaker 5: in the closing run of a critically important midterm election,
- 4:20Speaker 5: you do wonder, you do wonder if you're a Republican
- 4:24Speaker 5: running in California, Do you now go along with the
- 4:28Speaker 5: president's joke and say, hey, that's pretty funny?
- 4:31Speaker 1: Pretty funny.
- 4:31Speaker 5: He's talking about the obliteration of 10 million or so people.
- 4:35Speaker 5: What a funny joke that is. He should take his
- 4:37Speaker 5: act up to the Catskills after he's finished at 1600
- 4:40Speaker 5: Pennsylvania Avenue. Do you go along with that joke because
- 4:44Speaker 5: you are just that weak of a man? Or do
- 4:47Speaker 5: you actually stand up and say, you know what? That's
- 4:49Speaker 5: really out of line. Joking about the killing of 10
- 4:53Speaker 5: million or so Americans. We'll see what he does. But
- 4:57Speaker 5: like I said, they laughed when he talked about Paul
- 5:00Speaker 5: Pelosi almost being beaten to death.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Now, jokes about the killing.
- 5:04Speaker 5: I guess if you're in California, it's funny when you
- 5:08Speaker 5: talk about somebody being brutalized or entire cities being wiped
- 5:13Speaker 5: from the.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Face of the earth.
- 5:14Speaker 5: That's now a joke. That's now a joke for Donald Trump.
- 5:19Speaker 5: I think actually what it suggests, folks, is just how
- 5:23Speaker 5: low this president has taken himself and his party after
- 5:27Speaker 5: 10 years in American politics that people in that audience
- 5:33Speaker 5: laughed at the prospects of 10 million or so other
- 5:37Speaker 5: Americans being wiped off the face of the earth by
- 5:40Speaker 5: a nuke from Iran.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Yeah, there's no bottom here. I mean, President Trump is
- 5:45Speaker 4: going to take shots at his political foes. And those often,
- 5:49Speaker 4: he just deems them, they're other Americans. He's never tried
- 5:52Speaker 4: to be president of the entire country. He's never tried
- 5:55Speaker 4: to be president of blue states and red. We see
- 5:58Speaker 4: that from his governing. We see that from his rhetoric.
- 6:02Speaker 4: And yes, there were laughs in that audience last night. Today,
- 6:04Speaker 4: there will be, you know, some California Republicans, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 4: who are going to be asked about this. And yet again,
- 6:11Speaker 4: they're going to be put on the spot as to
- 6:13Speaker 4: whether they defend President Trump or not. Odds are, They will.
- 6:16Speaker 4: They'll say it was a joke. They'll play it off.
- 6:18Speaker 4: It's so rare to have a Republican actually defy him.
- 6:21Speaker 4: But it's also just another unnecessary distraction. And yes, this
- 6:26Speaker 4: is this. This will be on to the next outrage tomorrow.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Almost certainly. Right. But this is but this is the
- 6:31Speaker 4: problem that Trump has created for Republicans, whether it's his
- 6:34Speaker 4: policies because the war in Iran or his tariffs or
- 6:37Speaker 4: everything else or what he says, he's giving them nothing
- 6:41Speaker 4: to work with. Joe, nothing. And we're now a month
- 6:44Speaker 4: from the election. And I've talked to Republicans last week
- 6:47Speaker 4: for my piece, a couple more over the weekend who
- 6:50Speaker 4: just say it's almost he's not trying.
- 6:52Speaker 3: He's not.
- 6:53Speaker 4: It's almost as if he's actively hurting our chances or
- 6:55Speaker 4: at the very least, he's doing nothing to help. Yet
- 6:58Speaker 4: another negative distraction for the GOP's chances.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Well, he does.
- 7:02Speaker 5: And this, by the way, this is exactly what Karl
- 7:05Speaker 5: Rove is warning about. Don't let Donald Trump go out
- 7:08Speaker 5: on the road. You people that are talking about sending
- 7:10Speaker 5: him out on the road, this is a terrible idea
- 7:11Speaker 5: because every day he's going to say something else that's
- 7:16Speaker 5: going to hurt Republican candidates. And if you're in California
- 7:19Speaker 5: and you're trying to figure out whether to vote for
- 7:20Speaker 5: a Republican or a Democrat right now, all things being equal, well,
- 7:24Speaker 5: this certainly doesn't help Republican candidates' chances.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And also, again... He's got more things to worry about. Right.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Then then then going around and deeply offending people in California.
- 7:41Speaker 5: And I've got to say across the country, you've got
- 7:43Speaker 5: gas prices at record highs. You've got diesel prices at
- 7:46Speaker 5: record highs. Just telling people, hey, don't worry about it.
- 7:50Speaker 5: This is just short term pain. Don't worry about it.
- 7:53Speaker 5: It's worth it. It's worth it.
- 7:57Speaker 1: You know, by the way, if they do get.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Nukes, let let let them annihilate Los Angeles and San Diego.
- 8:03Speaker 1: But it's worth it.
- 8:05Speaker 5: I don't know that that's a good closing message for
- 8:10Speaker 5: a Republican Party that is faring worse in polls than,
- 8:14Speaker 5: you know, yesterday there was a Gallup poll. that showed,
- 8:17Speaker 5: I think, 11-point division between Republicans and Democrats on the
- 8:22Speaker 5: generic ballot test.
- 8:24Speaker 1: You have Dr.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Oz going on Fox News, lying about the price of butter, saying, oh,
- 8:28Speaker 5: it's only a dollar. Laura Ingraham goes, where are you shopping?
- 8:32Speaker 4: I mean, even Fox hosts are going, wait, wait a second.
- 8:35Speaker 1: What's wrong with you? Like, how out of touch are you?
- 8:40Speaker 5: And we're seeing exactly how out of touch they all
- 8:43Speaker 5: are in this final run. I, you know, I think
- 8:48Speaker 5: it's generous to say it's a joke.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I think this is all part of the he didn't
- 8:54Speaker 3: mean it mind game that he plays with his party
- 8:57Speaker 3: and his supporters and the American people. He didn't mean
- 9:01Speaker 3: it when it came to the tariffs. So many people
- 9:04Speaker 3: were so surprised that the tariffs happened. And I saw
- 9:08Speaker 3: that in real time. You saw it in real time, Joe.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Mass deportation.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I saw it. I saw it. Make up. Yeah.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Mika, we saw from the Treasury secretary before he was
- 9:17Speaker 5: Treasury secretary who.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Told us, oh, he doesn't mean it on tariffs. He
- 9:21Speaker 1: doesn't mean it. This is just his opening bid. He's
- 9:24Speaker 1: not going to do that. Right.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Or what about January 6th or what about retribution? I mean,
- 9:30Speaker 3: all these things. He didn't mean it. He doesn't really
- 9:32Speaker 3: mean it. He doesn't really mean it. John Hellman, how
- 9:36Speaker 3: many times have we heard that? And by the way,
- 9:38Speaker 3: it's either he doesn't mean it or I haven't been
- 9:40Speaker 3: watching the news is what you'll hear from people who
- 9:43Speaker 3: want to protect the behavior of this president, which every
- 9:47Speaker 3: day seems more and more dangerous to the safety of
- 9:50Speaker 3: this country.
- 9:51Speaker 4: I mean, you're right.
- 9:52Speaker 7: Those are the two options that Republicans are often given.
- 9:55Speaker 7: The I didn't read his Twitter feed or now, I guess,
- 9:58Speaker 7: is true.
- 9:58Speaker 3: So it's not reading the news.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I just I I don't know.
- 10:00Speaker 7: I'm not familiar with what the president said. I don't
- 10:02Speaker 7: I'm not paying attention. That's a that's the probably the
- 10:05Speaker 7: less objectionable than the President Trump didn't mean it. What
- 10:10Speaker 7: he said, because often, again, I go back to our
- 10:12Speaker 7: to our standard framework. projection or confession. In this case,
- 10:16Speaker 7: I think, Mika, you're coming down on the side of projection.
- 10:18Speaker 7: You know, he's starting to talk about things that, you know,
- 10:21Speaker 7: on some level, you know, he wouldn't mind seeing happening.
- 10:24Speaker 7: Not really, maybe not actively trying to make them happen,
- 10:28Speaker 7: but wouldn't be.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I would take it seriously.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Wouldn't be terrible.
- 10:31Speaker 7: I would take it seriously too, because as we know
- 10:33Speaker 7: about Donald Trump, he says a lot of things that
- 10:35Speaker 7: he never does anything about. He also says, he also
- 10:38Speaker 7: rarely does anything that he hasn't previously forecast. He telegraphs
- 10:43Speaker 7: every Every punch in every one of his desires comes
- 10:45Speaker 7: out everything. There is no there is no filter on him.
- 10:49Speaker 7: And I think to Joe's point, you know, it's four
- 10:52Speaker 7: weeks out.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 7: And what are you doing? The most fundamental thing driving
- 10:57Speaker 7: the elections across the country everywhere is voters who do
- 11:01Speaker 7: not think Donald Trump is president. cares about what they
- 11:04Speaker 7: care about, that he's not addressing issues that matter to
- 11:07Speaker 7: them in the most kind of fundamental way. Whatever you
- 11:10Speaker 7: think about his motivations in saying this, whatever you think
- 11:13Speaker 7: is going on inside that head of his, there's not
- 11:16Speaker 7: a vote that that wins. It doesn't help any Republican
- 11:21Speaker 7: candidate anywhere, not just in California, but anywhere in the country,
- 11:23Speaker 7: where the Republican looks up and says, well, Donald Trump
- 11:26Speaker 7: said that yesterday. I can run on that. That's part
- 11:28Speaker 7: of a message that's designed to reassure Republicans Some of
- 11:31Speaker 7: the skittish voters who are turning away from the party
- 11:34Speaker 7: that tries to help people feel like maybe. the president
- 11:37Speaker 7: and the Republican Party are on their side and focused
- 11:40Speaker 7: on the real lives of those real people. There's no
- 11:45Speaker 7: analysis by which you could come up with an argument
- 11:47Speaker 7: that this helps even a little bit for him to
- 11:49Speaker 7: be saying these kind of things.
- 11:51Speaker 4: And the message does go far and wide.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Hey, it's Rachel.
- 11:54Speaker 8: I am so glad to see you at the end
- 11:55Speaker 8: of that clip because this is where I get to
