- 0:12Speaker 1: must learn what the witnesses know and why they have
- 0:15Speaker 1: chosen to come forward. This is Gunsmoke Bums Rush, Episode 52,
- 0:21Speaker 1: first heard on CBS Radio April 18, 1953, a 30-minute

- 0:59Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:02Speaker 2: gun smoke.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Gun smoke.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that
- 1:24Speaker 2: moved west with young America. The story of a man

- 1:57Speaker 4: Hey, boss.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Yeah? There's no moon tonight.
- 2:05Speaker 4: What of it?
- 2:07Speaker 5: It's spooky when there's no moon. You afraid of something, Mahalo?
- 2:13Speaker 5: Of me?
- 2:16Speaker 6: You.
- 2:18Speaker 5: What are you afraid of? Of course, I ain't been
- 2:21Speaker 5: much afraid of anything since the second battle of Bull Run.
- 2:25Speaker 5: That so?
- 2:27Speaker 4: Oh.
- 2:29Speaker 5: I took my first bullet at Manassas Gap. I thought, sure,
- 2:33Speaker 5: I'd die. But I didn't. That's nothing.
- 2:40Speaker 7: When I got shot on the Chattahoochee River over in Georgia.
- 2:44Speaker 5: I knew I wouldn't die. How'd you know? I just knew,
- 2:49Speaker 5: that's all. Weren't you afraid? Afraid of what? Dying. I've
- 2:59Speaker 5: never been afraid to die. Well, I'm not afraid. Not anymore.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Not since Bull Run. And what's all this about there
- 3:10Speaker 5: being no moon, Arlo? I said I'm not afraid to die.
- 3:13Speaker 5: I didn't say I'm not afraid of anything. Oh, shut up. Okay. Hey, Gorse.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 3:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Wish we could stop and light a fire. Why? I
- 3:31Speaker 5: got some pork to cook. Now, listen here, Orlo. You
- 3:35Speaker 5: trying to tie the rope around your own neck? No.
- 3:40Speaker 5: And eat your meat raw, you hear? Raw meat gives
- 3:42Speaker 5: me the bellyache. You needn't worry about that, Orlo.
- 3:48Speaker 7: Those people back in Dodge, they got a cure for bellyache.
- 3:52Speaker 5: They have? You, they have. A lariat rope over the
- 3:57Speaker 5: limb of a cottonwood tree. Oh, they ain't going to
- 4:00Speaker 5: catch us. They will if you.
- 4:03Speaker 7: Go building bonfires all over the prairie to cook your
- 4:06Speaker 7: dang pork with.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Well, I'll just build a little bitty Indian fire, Gorse. Oh,
- 4:12Speaker 5: shut up. Harlow?
- 4:19Speaker 7: Hmm?
- 4:21Speaker 5: Look over there. Where? Over there. What's the fun of
- 4:25Speaker 5: that little ride? I don't see nothing. That cabin, you
- 4:30Speaker 5: do too, sir. Oh, that. What about it?
- 4:33Speaker 7: There's no light in it, you fool.
- 4:35Speaker 5: And there's no smoke. It's deserted. Well, that's good, ain't it, Gorse?
- 4:39Speaker 5: Nobody to tell the posse which way we went. How
- 4:43Speaker 5: do you know they got a posse? Well, they should have. Anyways,
- 4:49Speaker 5: we'll sleep in that cabin. Somebody does come along, we
- 4:53Speaker 5: can fight them off from there. Come on. Come on.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Come on. It's big, ain't it, Gorse? Big enough for us, anyway.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Come on, maybe there's some food inside.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Hey, wait.
- 5:28Speaker 5: There's a horse in here. He must have got in
- 5:31Speaker 5: and the door blew shut. Poor thing. Well, get him out. Yeah. Easy, boy.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Easy now, sir. Easy. I got him. Now, outside, fella.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Outside. Come on. Yeah. Yeah, that's funny.
- 5:48Speaker 5: What's funny? That horse. He's all wet with lather. Lather?
- 5:53Speaker 4: Hold it right there.
- 5:53Speaker 7: Hey.
- 5:55Speaker 5: There's somebody in there.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Now get your hands up. You're framed in the door
- 5:58Speaker 4: and you'll die if you make a wrong move. Now
- 6:01Speaker 4: turn around and stand there. Now take your guns.
- 6:14Speaker 5: Who are you, mister?
- 6:15Speaker 4: All right, get outside.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Slow. Slow.
- 6:25Speaker 4: All right, that's far enough. Now you can turn around.
- 6:31Speaker 4: All right, you, what's your name? Orlo. Orlo what?
- 6:36Speaker 5: Just Orlo. And you? William Goss, but I don't use
- 6:41Speaker 5: a William.
- 6:42Speaker 4: I'll remember that.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Look, mister, we don't mean no harm.
- 6:45Speaker 7: We just thought your cabin was deserted and we could
- 6:49Speaker 7: sleep in that night.
- 6:50Speaker 4: It's deserted, but you won't be sleeping anywhere tonight.
- 6:53Speaker 5: Now, mister, you got no right to.
- 6:55Speaker 4: You'll sleep in Dodge when we get there.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Oh, no. No, we can't go back to Dodge.
- 7:00Speaker 4: No? Why can't you?
- 7:02Speaker 5: Well, you see, we shot a man that day. This
- 7:06Speaker 5: morning it was.
- 7:06Speaker 8: All of you, shut up.
- 7:08Speaker 5: But, Gorse, you know we can't go back. I'll shut
- 7:10Speaker 5: you up.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Hold it, Gorse.
- 7:13Speaker 7: Well, he always did talk too much. The war made
- 7:17Speaker 7: him like that, mister. He was all right before the war.
- 7:20Speaker 5: So they say, anyway.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Now, listen to me, both of you. This isn't my cabin.
- 7:26Speaker 5: It isn't? Then why'd you put us out of it?
- 7:29Speaker 4: I'm trying to tell you why. I'm a United States Marshal.
- 7:33Speaker 5: What? Oh, Gorse, we got caught.
- 7:35Speaker 4: You're both under arrest for murder.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Well, I'll be. So that's why his horse was hot.
- 7:41Speaker 5: He'd been chasing us, Gorse. How could he have been
- 7:44Speaker 5: chasing us? He was in front of us.
- 7:46Speaker 4: I've been on your tail ever since you ran out
- 7:47Speaker 4: of Dodge. The trail you were following led right here,
- 7:50Speaker 4: so I made a circle and waited for you. Does
- 7:52Speaker 4: that explain things?
- 7:54Speaker 5: Hey, that's pretty smart, isn't it, Gorse? We was riding
- 7:58Speaker 5: too slow. Yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 4: But if I'd known what I was following, I think
- 8:02Speaker 4: I'd have just ridden up behind and yelled at you
- 8:04Speaker 4: to stop.
- 8:05Speaker 5: We'd have run.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Now explain something to me, will you? What are you men?
- 8:13Speaker 5: We're just friends. Yeah, me and Gorse been friends for
- 8:17Speaker 5: a long time.
- 8:18Speaker 4: No, no, no, that's not what I meant. Look, you
- 8:21Speaker 4: shot that store clerk in Dodge and you killed him.
- 8:23Speaker 4: But you're sure not gunmen. You're not bandits. Now, what
- 8:26Speaker 4: are you?
- 8:28Speaker 5: We're broke. We needed some money. But he wouldn't give
- 8:31Speaker 5: it to us. He grabbed a gun and stared out
- 8:33Speaker 5: under the counter. And he'd have shot us with it, too.
- 8:37Speaker 5: We had to kill him. That's all there is to it, Marshal.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Not quite, I'm afraid. You killed a man and I'm
- 8:44Speaker 4: taking you in for murder.
- 8:46Speaker 5: They gonna hang us?
- 8:48Speaker 4: Not they.
- 8:48Speaker 5: The law, maybe.
- 8:51Speaker 4: But you'll get a fair trial.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Won't matter. We done it. We'll hang. Yeah.
- 8:57Speaker 4: You're right, Goose.
- 8:58Speaker 5: We'll hang, sure. I don't know.
- 9:00Speaker 4: I suppose you'd have killed somebody sooner or later. All right,
- 9:04Speaker 4: get your horses.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Ain't you gonna handcuff us or nothing? Why? Oh, no reason, Marshal.
- 9:11Speaker 5: I was just asking.
- 9:13Speaker 4: I thought so. All right, come on. It's a long
- 9:16Speaker 4: ride to Dodge. It took all night to ride back
- 9:25Speaker 4: to Dodge. But I didn't have to watch my prisoners
- 9:28Speaker 4: any more than if they'd been a couple of riders
- 9:30Speaker 4: I'd thrown in with on the trail. Maybe it was
- 9:34Speaker 4: all their years in the war, in the army, that
- 9:38Speaker 4: made them do whatever I as a marshal told them
- 9:40Speaker 4: to do. The idea of not obeying me never occurred
- 9:44Speaker 4: to him. Next morning, I had Chester lock him up,
- 9:48Speaker 4: and then I went off to get some sleep. About noon,
- 9:53Speaker 4: I got up, ate something, and dropped into the Texas Trail.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Sit down.
- 9:59Speaker 9: Matt.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, Kitty. I hear you brought in those murderers. Yeah, yeah,
- 10:07Speaker 4: I did. Well, aren't you glad? Yeah, sure, Kitty.
- 10:12Speaker 5: I'm glad. Well, they're the ones, aren't they?
- 10:15Speaker 10: You got the right men.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Yeah, they're the ones. They did it. Matt, sometimes I
- 10:21Speaker 4: don't know.
- 10:21Speaker 5: Kitty.
- 10:24Speaker 4: They're just a couple of not very bright men who...
- 10:28Speaker 4: Who've had too much war. I guess they just got
- 10:31Speaker 4: used to killing. I don't think it means anything at
- 10:33Speaker 4: all to them. They're not mean and they're not vicious.
- 10:36Speaker 4: They're just... Kind of loco. Well, that's what makes them dangerous,
- 10:44Speaker 4: I guess. Marshall Dillon? Yeah.
- 10:47Speaker 9: I hear you brought in two men this morning. Gorse
- 10:50Speaker 9: and Orlo.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Now, how do you know their names? Everybody does by now. Yeah,
- 10:57Speaker 4: I suppose so. They didn't do it, Marshal. What? They're innocent.
- 11:02Speaker 4: They didn't kill that clerk.
- 11:05Speaker 5: Who are you, mister?
- 11:06Speaker 4: My name is Blaine, George Blaine. All right, Blaine, what's
- 11:09Speaker 4: this all about? What I said, Marshal. They're innocent. You see,
- 11:13Speaker 4: I and Ned and Lou... Well, over there at the bar.
- 11:17Speaker 9: We saw him just leaving Kelly's stable when that shooting
- 11:19Speaker 9: took place.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Would you swear to that in court? Why, sure, Marshal.
- 11:24Speaker 4: How come you arrested him anyway? Well, I'll tell you, Blaine.
- 11:29Speaker 4: They shot a man.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Nobody saw that killer.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Look, I don't know who you are or what your
- 11:34Speaker 4: interest in this is, but they admit killing that clerk.
- 11:37Speaker 4: So why don't you just go back and join your
- 11:39Speaker 4: friends at the bar and forget about it, huh?
- 11:42Speaker 9: No, Marshal, we won't forget about it. You shouldn't have
- 11:45Speaker 9: arrested those men. And what's more, we're going to see
- 11:48Speaker 9: to it they don't stay arrested.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Well? You want to see to it right now, Mr.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Blaine?
- 11:59Speaker 4: No.
- 12:01Speaker 9: No, there are other men around here interested in justice, Marshal.
- 12:05Speaker 4: And I think we'll talk to them first. Don't do it, Blaine.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Don't get anything like that started here in Dodge. See
- 12:15Speaker 4: you later, Marshal. Who is he, Kitty?
- 12:22Speaker 5: I don't know, Matt.
- 12:23Speaker 4: He and his two friends came in on a Santa
- 12:25Speaker 4: Fe from St.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Louis a couple of days ago. That's all I know.
- 12:29Speaker 4: I wonder what they got in mind.
- 12:31Speaker 5: Oh, they've been drinking. Let's just talk, Matt.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe. I'll see you later, Kitty. So long.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Hurry back, Matt.
- 12:46Speaker 3: The End.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Notice, Mr.
- 13:05Speaker 8: Dillon, that fellow come here, but I wouldn't let.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Him talk to the prisoners.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Was he alone or did he have his two friends
- 13:10Speaker 4: with him, Chester?
- 13:11Speaker 5: Oh, he was alone, sir.
- 13:13Speaker 8: But I did notice a couple of men waiting around
- 13:15Speaker 8: outside now that you mention it.
- 13:17Speaker 4: You, uh, haven't heard anything about this Blaine or his
- 13:20Speaker 4: friends the last day or so, have you? No, sir.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Nobody's mentioned them. Around me, anyway.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Well, it sure stumps me.
- 13:29Speaker 8: You think maybe they're going to cause trouble, Mr. Dillon?
- 13:31Speaker 4: I don't know, Chester. They might try, but it'd be
- 13:34Speaker 4: easier to stop if I knew what was behind it.
- 13:36Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Yeah, mobs have tried to open this jail before... but
- 13:41Speaker 4: to lynch somebody, not to turn them loose.
- 13:45Speaker 8: Mighty curious, all right.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Chester, I'm going to have a talk with the prisoners.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Maybe they might know something.
- 13:53Speaker 5: Well, it's worth a try, Chester. Yeah. Hey, Gorse. It's
- 14:08Speaker 5: the Marshal. Hello, Marshal.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Hello, Arlo. Of course.
- 14:13Speaker 5: How are you, Marshal?
- 14:15Speaker 4: Well, is Chester treating you all right?
- 14:17Speaker 5: Well, there wasn't much of the bait we had this morning,
- 14:21Speaker 5: but the noon meal was fine. Marshal?
- 14:24Speaker 10: Hmm?
- 14:25Speaker 5: We get supper, too?
- 14:26Speaker 4: Of course you do.
- 14:28Speaker 5: When are they going to hang us, Marshal? Well, Arlo, you.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Haven't been tried yet. Nothing's going to happen until you
- 14:37Speaker 4: have a trial.
- 14:40Speaker 5: How long will that take, Marshal? Well, what difference does
- 14:42Speaker 5: it make, Gorse, as long as we get fed every day?
- 14:46Speaker 4: Listen, you man, I want to ask you something.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Sure, Marshal.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Have you ever heard of a man named Blaine? He's tall,
- 14:55Speaker 4: has black hair, he's... Wasn't that the fellow's name who
- 15:00Speaker 4: was here this morning all over?
- 15:01Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right, Blaine.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Here this morning? Chester said he kept him out of here.
- 15:07Speaker 7: Oh, he come around back outside, talked through the window there.
- 15:12Speaker 7: Seemed like a nice fella. Sort of crazy, though.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Now, why do you say that, Oliver? What'd he want?
- 15:18Speaker 5: Oh, he kept saying he had witnesses and all like that.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Said we're innocent. We shouldn't be in here. Well, what'd
- 15:25Speaker 5: you tell him? Well, we told him how you caught
- 15:29Speaker 5: us and what we did and all. We told him
- 15:33Speaker 5: there wasn't any witnesses we could see. Just us. And
- 15:37Speaker 5: that clerk. But we killed him.
- 15:40Speaker 7: Sure, but Blaine was saying him and his friends saw
- 15:44Speaker 7: us down by some corral or something.
- 15:48Speaker 5: I don't know. He was all mixed up.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Tell me, have either one of you ever seen this
- 15:54Speaker 4: Blaine before?
- 15:55Speaker 5: Oh, no, Marshal. Never laid eyes on him. And that's
- 15:58Speaker 5: the truth. That's right, Marshal. Me and Gorse, we never
- 16:02Speaker 5: tell lies.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I know. Did Blaine tell you what he's going
- 16:09Speaker 4: to do? What his plans are?
- 16:12Speaker 5: Narrow word, Marshal.
- 16:13Speaker 7: Except he did say for us to set up a
- 16:18Speaker 7: holla that we didn't kill that fella.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Oh, he's crazy, that Blaine. I couldn't get his drift
- 16:24Speaker 5: at all.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Well, I'll tell you what it is, Orlo. For some
- 16:27Speaker 4: reason that I don't know, Blaine wants you two out
- 16:29Speaker 4: of jail. He may come here with a mob and
- 16:32Speaker 4: try and get you out.
- 16:33Speaker 5: Well, he can't do that. We're under arrest here.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I know. But he might try. Hmm.
- 16:41Speaker 5: What'll we do about it, Marshal? Nothing, of course, nothing.
- 16:45Speaker 4: I'll handle it.
- 16:45Speaker 5: You sure, Marshal?
- 16:48Speaker 4: Uh, let me know if you need anything, huh?
- 16:51Speaker 5: Oh, we're fine, Marshal. Thanks just the same. Sure. Okay.
- 16:55Speaker 4: I'll see you later, then. Ah, hello, Doc. What are
- 17:05Speaker 4: you doing here?
- 17:06Speaker 10: I heard there might be some excitement, Matt.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Oh, you did, huh?
- 17:08Speaker 5: Yeah, right here at the jail, too.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Give Doc a gun, Chester. We can use another man.
- 17:13Speaker 8: Name your preference, Doc. Shotgun or rifle?
- 17:15Speaker 10: You sit right where you are, Chester. I'm not a gunfighter.
- 17:19Speaker 10: My work begins when you fellas leave off.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Well, you may have a busy evening, Doc. But I
- 17:25Speaker 4: hope not.
- 17:26Speaker 5: You never can tell, Matt. But I take things as
- 17:29Speaker 5: they come. Yeah. I know. I better go and get
- 17:33Speaker 5: my office cleaned up.
- 17:35Speaker 10: If anyone gets shot, you send them right up there.
- 17:43Speaker 4: It doesn't improve a man's temper to spend the afternoon
- 17:46Speaker 4: sitting around and waiting for a mob to form. A
- 17:50Speaker 4: mob that's going to head his way when it gets
- 17:52Speaker 4: its spirits high enough. Chester and I didn't talk much.
- 17:56Speaker 4: We just sat and waited. Long about dusk, we saw
- 18:01Speaker 4: a couple of dozen men gather in the middle of
- 18:03Speaker 4: the plaza. Then Blaine appeared, and he began haranguing them.
- 18:10Speaker 4: And the crowd grew. In a little while, it started
- 18:14Speaker 4: moving down Front Street, down toward the jail, and us.
- 18:19Speaker 8: Looks like everybody in Dodge is taking an interest, Mr. Dillon.
- 18:24Speaker 4: We'll use shotguns, Chester. I never saw a mob yet
- 18:27Speaker 4: that was eager to jump a shotgun.
- 18:28Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Here's yours, Mr. Dillon.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Well, let's go meet them outside, Chester.
- 18:53Speaker 5: All right, sir.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Here, this is good enough.
- 18:59Speaker 8: Pretty big crowd coming, Mr.
- 19:00Speaker 5: Dillon.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe most of them are just curious. I sure am, anyway.
- 19:06Speaker 5: What do you mean, sir?
- 19:08Speaker 4: Well, I haven't got this Blaine figure, that's all.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Good morning.
- 19:17Speaker 4: All right, hold it, man.
- 19:19Speaker 5: Hold it, man.
- 19:20Speaker 4: I'll see if I can talk some sense.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Into the Marshal first. Well, Marshal, I was right.
- 19:28Speaker 9: There seem to be a lot of men in Dodge
- 19:29Speaker 9: interested in justice.
- 19:32Speaker 4: We want Orlo and Gorse out of that jail, Marshal.
- 19:35Speaker 4: We want them freed. Aren't you going to say anything, Marshal?
- 19:42Speaker 4: I don't see your two partners, Blaine, whatever their names are.
- 19:45Speaker 4: Don't you worry about them, Marshal.
- 19:47Speaker 9: Now, you tell us. Are you going to turn those
- 19:49Speaker 9: prisoners away? loose, or do you want us to do it? Well,
- 19:54Speaker 9: speak up, Marshal.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Which way is it going to be?
- 19:56Speaker 4: All right. Now, you've all heard Blaine's story. He claims
- 20:05Speaker 4: he and his friends saw Orlo and Gorse at Kelly's
- 20:08Speaker 4: stable when the shooting took place. Now, that's pretty good
- 20:11Speaker 4: evidence that they didn't kill that clerk. And it could
- 20:15Speaker 4: be true. I'm going to go inside and I'm going
- 20:20Speaker 4: to talk to him about it. I'll give you my
- 20:23Speaker 4: answer in half an hour. Now, is that fair enough?
- 20:29Speaker 2: A half hour will just about do it, Marshal.
- 20:32Speaker 4: I think it will, Blaine.
- 20:33Speaker 5: But no matter what you.
- 20:35Speaker 9: Decide, we're going to turn them loose.
- 20:37Speaker 5: Isn't that right, men?
- 20:38Speaker 4: That's right. Chester, keep an eye on Blaine. Don't let
- 20:42Speaker 4: him leave here if you have to shoot him to
- 20:44Speaker 4: keep him around.
- 20:45Speaker 8: Yes, sir, but I don't understand... Just do as I say, Chester.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 21:09Speaker 5: What's doing, Marshal?
- 21:10Speaker 4: I don't know, Gorse, but I just might find out.
- 21:12Speaker 5: This Dodge is a mighty strange place, wanting to turn
- 21:16Speaker 5: prisoners loose.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Yeah. I'll be back soon.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Matt, what are you up to?
- 21:40Speaker 9: You're going to break my window with those rocks.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Get on here, Doc. I need you in a hurry.
- 21:44Speaker 6: Really?
- 21:45Speaker 4: Oh, sure, Matt.
- 21:46Speaker 5: Stand under the window here and I'll climb down on
- 21:48Speaker 5: top of you.
- 21:49Speaker 4: It's only a few feet. Okay. All right, come on, hurry.
- 21:56Speaker 5: Yeah, well, what's this all about, Matt? Where are we going?
- 21:59Speaker 4: We're going to the express company first. What for?
- 22:02Speaker 5: It's closed.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Maybe not. It's not quite six.
- 22:05Speaker 10: Everybody in Dodge is out there in the street. I
- 22:07Speaker 10: was watching from the front window.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Not quite everybody, Doc. Blaine's two friends, aren't they?
- 22:13Speaker 5: Yeah, right.
- 22:13Speaker 4: I'm working on a hunch, Doc. If I'm right, I
- 22:16Speaker 4: want you as a witness. And we'll go back and
- 22:18Speaker 4: show that mob what fools they are.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Whatever you say, Matt. But I haven't got a gun.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Don't worry. I'll do the shooting. We reached the rear
- 22:31Speaker 4: of the express company, and I took a quick look
- 22:33Speaker 4: through the window. The single room was deserted. And the
- 22:38Speaker 4: only other place would be the bank, if I was right.
- 22:41Speaker 4: And I was. Two horses were tied to a tree
- 22:44Speaker 4: outside the back entrance, the door of which was ajar.
- 22:49Speaker 4: I made Doc get around the corner of the building
- 22:51Speaker 4: where he'd be safe. Then I stood close to the
- 22:54Speaker 4: door and waited. In about five minutes, I heard him
- 22:57Speaker 4: coming out.
- 22:59Speaker 5: Let's get that mask off.
- 23:00Speaker 10: We'll hide this stuff at the stable, go down and
- 23:03Speaker 10: join Blaine.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Hurry, Lou, we're late now. Get your hands up. This
- 23:06Speaker 4: is a shotgun. Don't use it.
- 23:09Speaker 5: You got us.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Don't shoot. Well, you're not the fightingest man I ever saw.
- 23:15Speaker 4: All right, I'll take your guns now, and don't try anything.
- 23:21Speaker 4: And yours.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Doc.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Here, here.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Well, what do you know?
- 23:32Speaker 5: Blaine's partners. You sure guess right, Matt.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Now, who's inside? We didn't hurt him, Marshal.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Just tied him up.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Who, I said?
- 23:42Speaker 5: That old man, the banker.
- 23:44Speaker 4: All right, go take a look at him, Doc. Take
- 23:46Speaker 4: those money bags with you.
- 23:48Speaker 5: But be quick.
- 23:48Speaker 4: We haven't got much time. The End I'll have company
- 24:07Speaker 4: for you shortly, gentlemen, so you just sit quiet, huh?
- 24:10Speaker 4: Lane's going to be mighty surprised at this. Come on, Doctor.
- 24:25Speaker 5: My gracious, I thought you was never going to come out, Mr. Dillon. Well, Marshal,
- 24:32Speaker 5: are you going to be smart?
- 24:33Speaker 4: Are you going to turn them loose? You're under arrest, Blaine.
- 24:37Speaker 5: What? Marshal, don't be a fool.
- 24:41Speaker 9: You aren't arresting anybody.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Is he, men? Tell him who I just locked up, Doc.
- 24:49Speaker 5: All right. That's right, men. Marshal just arrested Blaine's two friends. What?
- 24:54Speaker 4: You make one move and I'll cut you in half, Blaine.
- 24:58Speaker 4: All right, go ahead, Doc.
- 24:59Speaker 10: I was right there with him.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Caught him up the street, right in the bank. There,
- 25:03Speaker 6: locked up, inside, right now. Oh, they're no friends of mine.
- 25:09Speaker 6: We've been drinking together, that's all. Besides, I wasn't anywhere
- 25:12Speaker 6: near that bank. I was right here.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Yeah. You men saw me here.
- 25:15Speaker 4: And you got nearly everybody else in town here, too, Blaine.
- 25:19Speaker 4: So your partners could work unmolested. Take his gun, Chester.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 25:25Speaker 4: All right.
- 25:26Speaker 5: All right.
- 25:28Speaker 8: All right.
- 25:31Speaker 4: All right, you men. Now you've made fools enough of
- 25:34Speaker 4: yourselves for one evening. Now you go back where you
- 25:38Speaker 4: came from and stay there.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Now go on.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Inside, Blaine. Your friends are waiting for you. I never
- 25:57Speaker 4: did find out just who Blaine was. He kept his
- 26:01Speaker 4: mouth shut all through the trial. It could be that
- 26:05Speaker 4: he'd never been arrested before. But anyway, he and his
- 26:09Speaker 4: partners got five years. That's better than Harlow and Gorse
- 26:16Speaker 4: made up. They stood up and told their whole story
- 26:20Speaker 4: as straight as I'd told it myself. I guess telling
- 26:24Speaker 4: the truth was about the only sense of right and
- 26:27Speaker 4: wrong that the war had left them. They weren't bad men,
- 26:35Speaker 4: but they were dangerous. And early one morning, a month later,
- 26:40Speaker 4: up in Hayes City, on the order of the court,
- 26:45Speaker 4: Orlo and Gorse were hung.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, under the direction of Norman McDonald, stars William Conrad
- 27:09Speaker 2: as Matt Dillon, U.S.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Marshal.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Tonight's story was specially written for Gunsmoke by John Meston,
- 27:15Speaker 2: with music composed and conducted by Rex Corey. Featured in
- 27:18Speaker 2: the cast were John Daner and Harry Bartell, with Lawrence
- 27:21Speaker 2: Dobkin and Lou Krugman. Marley Bear as Chester, Howard McNair
- 27:25Speaker 2: as Doc, and Georgia Ellis as Kitty. Gunsmoke is heard
- 27:28Speaker 2: by our troops overseas through the facilities of the Armed
- 27:31Speaker 2: Forces Radio Service. Join us again next week as Matt.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Dillon, U.S.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Marshal, fights to bring law and order out of the
- 27:37Speaker 2: wild violence of the West in Gunsmoke.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Gunsmoke Bums Rush concludes our visit to Dodge City. Good night,
- 28:00Speaker 1: and thank you for joining us.
