Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Geoffrey Miller: Geopolitical analyst discusses Jordan and the UAE's overnight aid airdrops into Gaza
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So you might have seen an announcement yesterday on building products.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Sounds great and there's a lot of builders I know
- 0:06Speaker 1: who are excited about this. This is where we will
- 0:09Speaker 1: basically follow international standards on products like plasterboard and cladding
- 0:13Speaker 1: and windows and external doors, all sorts of stuff which
- 0:16Speaker 1: should bring the price of them down. Mean that we
- 0:19Speaker 1: have more choice, more options. In theory that would bring
- 0:22Speaker 1: the price of building down. However, the government doesn't say
- 0:26Speaker 1: at this point by how much on average they estimate,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and they also haven't released the list yet, so that
- 0:32Speaker 1: won't happen until today. Curiously, they made the announcement yesterday,
- 0:36Speaker 1: but we won't actually know what's products are on the
- 0:39Speaker 1: list until sometime later today. Fourteen minutes after five, Ryan
- 0:45Speaker 1: bred Shordan and the UAE have begun air drops into
- 0:48Speaker 1: Gaza to deliver aid. It comes after the Israeli military
- 0:51Speaker 1: announced it'll open humanitarian corridors into the Strip and a
- 0:55Speaker 1: tactical pause in military activity in three specific areas. Jeffrey
- 1:01Speaker 1: Miller is a geo geopolitical analyst with US this morning. Jeffrey,
- 1:05Speaker 1: Good morning, Good morning, Ryan. Good to have you on
- 1:07Speaker 1: the program. So is this going to be enough? Do
- 1:10Speaker 1: you think to address the problem that is clearly happening
- 1:14Speaker 1: in that starvation, well, look at something.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Something is better than nothing. As the UAE and Jordan
- 1:21Speaker 2: dropped around twenty five tons of aid into Gaza overnight,
- 1:26Speaker 2: a look, that's a drop in the ocean considering the
- 1:29Speaker 2: scale of need. These two pauses, so there's a ten
- 1:33Speaker 2: hour pause of humanitarian pause or tactical pauses. W I'll
- 1:37Speaker 2: cause it in three areas of Gaza, and then there's
- 1:40Speaker 2: a seventeen hour window where it will be a humanitarian
- 1:43Speaker 2: corridor effectively allowed for the distribution of A. I think
- 1:46Speaker 2: both of those are going to be useful, but in
- 1:48Speaker 2: the end they only really will help if Israel allows
- 1:52Speaker 2: more A to come into Gaza. And that's really where
- 1:55Speaker 2: the hold up is. Around one hundred trucks apparently went
- 1:58Speaker 2: in from Egypt overnight, but they're being held up at
- 2:02Speaker 2: the border, held up at one of the checkpoints in
- 2:04Speaker 2: Israel is being very very careful in what it allows
- 2:08Speaker 2: into Gaza, and that's really where the problem comes from.
- 2:12Speaker 2: There's a lot of aid that is held up at
- 2:14Speaker 2: the border, is already within Gaza and to some degree,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but is not being allowed for further distribution and that's
- 2:21Speaker 2: what desperately is needed. Israel absolutely needs to allow that
- 2:25Speaker 2: aid to reach the Palestinian people in Gaza because the
- 2:28Speaker 2: scale of suffering is just horrific at the moment.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Absolutely. It is one of the things that the IDEAF
- 2:33Speaker 1: always talks about is Hummas and what their control of
- 2:37Speaker 1: aid centers or involvement with aid centers and distribution centers
- 2:40Speaker 1: could mean, and also what's potentially coming in across the border.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yes, I mean, that's always Israel's argument that Hammas controls
- 2:49Speaker 2: the food aid and that weapons are being smuggled in
- 2:52Speaker 2: with the aid, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. But
- 2:55Speaker 2: I think we just need to take one look at
- 2:56Speaker 2: some of the horrific images that are coming out out
- 2:59Speaker 2: of Gaza, being shown on a nightly basis on our
- 3:02Speaker 2: TV screens around the world, and we look at those
- 3:04Speaker 2: calls from over one hundred eight organizations last week. I
- 3:09Speaker 2: think the calls really reached a crescendo last week in
- 3:11Speaker 2: Israel is actually responding to the pressure there's been placed
- 3:15Speaker 2: in it from the international community and some of the
- 3:18Speaker 2: things that have been coming out. I mean, France's recognition
- 3:20Speaker 2: of a Palestinian state is another point of pressure. So
- 3:25Speaker 2: it is interesting that Israel is actually responding to the pressure.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And I think we need to keep the pressure on.
- 3:31Speaker 2: The international community needs to keep the pressure on. Because
- 3:33Speaker 2: on Friday, the ceasefire negotiations and cut up between Hamas
- 3:38Speaker 2: and Israel and the United States. That collapsed and Israel
- 3:41Speaker 2: and the United States effectively took Peo ball and went home.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Steve Wikoff said Israel would now look for alternative options
- 3:48Speaker 2: to free the hostages. It didn't sound good, and just
- 3:51Speaker 2: within the last couple of hours, Ryan and Donald Trump
- 3:54Speaker 2: is said Israel need to make a decision. Well, that
- 3:56Speaker 2: sounds quite ominous to me. So I think we need
- 3:58Speaker 2: to keep our eye on on the bigger picture here,
- 4:01Speaker 2: which is those Ceasepine negotiations. And I do think, you know,
- 4:04Speaker 2: if we're looking at New Zealand's perspective, new Zealand can
- 4:08Speaker 2: play a small part in all of that. Wiston Peter
- 4:11Speaker 2: said that last week he said that New Zealand can
- 4:13Speaker 2: and must play its part. And so I think New
- 4:16Speaker 2: Zealand needs to think about what it can do. And
- 4:18Speaker 2: I think New Zealand needs to also think about its
- 4:20Speaker 2: relations with countries in the Middle East. New Zealand has
- 4:23Speaker 2: good relations in with the Gulf States alikes of the
- 4:26Speaker 2: United so I think Wiston Peters needs to be pulling
- 4:29Speaker 2: on all the diplomatic leaders here.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Absolutely, I appreciate your time this morning, Jeffrey Miller, who's
- 4:33Speaker 1: a geopolitical analyst.
