- 0:00Welcome to Ground Signal Culture. It's Thursday,
- 0:02October 22. Today, we're in Paris and Belgrade,
- 0:05Lagos and Seoul, Amsterdam and Lima. Here's what
- 0:07young people are doing, wearing, and listening
- 0:10to right now. Lead signal, France. Student protests
- 0:14have now run since late September. Today, authorities
- 0:16banned some planned demonstrations in Paris,
- 0:19Lyon, Lille, and Grenoble. That follows a weekend
- 0:21of looting and Grenoble. That follows a weekend
- 0:24of looting and clashes. The Associated Press
- 0:27reports thousands have been detained since this
- 0:29began. The core grievances are school conditions
- 0:31and the cost of living. Those are everyday pressures
- 0:35for anyone studying or starting out. The question
- 0:38now is whether bands cool things down or push
- 0:41people into the streets anyway. Protest bands
- 0:43often do the second. Watch what happens in the
- 0:46next 24 hours. Music radar. In the UK, Iristar
- 0:50and ZIYN hold the number one spot on the official
- 0:53Afrobeats chart this week with Heaven Baby. It
- 0:55got there in its ninth week on the chart. A slow
- 0:58climb, then a clean win. Over in K -pop, last
- 1:01week was crowded with comebacks. MEOVV, MCT Wish,
- 1:05Plave, and Externary Heroes all dropped new music
- 1:09between October 11 and 17. Fans now have plenty
- 1:12to sort through. The pattern is easy to spot.
- 1:15Afrobeats and K -pop both keep growing through
- 1:17slow builds and loyal fanbases, not one -day
- 1:20spikes. Heaven Baby is a good example of that
- 1:22patience paying off. Street and style. Amsterdam
- 1:26dance event opened this week, and the fashion
- 1:28crossover is loud. One Million Black Tour Amsterdam,
- 1:32a fashion launch, was part of opening night on
- 1:34Wednesday. Then there's the J5 Sneaker Rave,
- 1:38which mixes music, sneakers, fashion, and street
- 1:41culture under one roof. The festival is treating
- 1:44the dance floor and the closet as the same conversation.
- 1:48Young crowds already do. On the ground, Serbia.
- 1:52Students marched into Belgrade on Wednesday,
- 1:54ahead of a parliamentary vote this Sunday, October
- 1:5625. President Aleksandar Vucic held his own rally
- 2:00in the south of the country. The Associated Press
- 2:03describes the vote as a real test of his rule,
- 2:06with the student movement at the center. Many
- 2:08of these students started out protesting in the
- 2:10streets. Now they're asking for votes. Screen
- 2:13and sound. Clara and the Sun opens in theaters
- 2:16tomorrow, October 23. Taika Waititi directs this
- 2:19adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel about
- 2:22an artificial friend watching over a lonely teenager.
- 2:25Early reviews are mixed to negative. The Guardian
- 2:28called it a sentimental mess. If you're going,
- 2:31go for the questions about AI and companionship
- 2:34and keep your expectations measured. City Pulse,
- 2:37Lima. This Saturday, October 24, Los Mirlos play
- 2:42Tropy Peru at CC Maracana in Jesus Maria. They're
- 2:46pioneers of psychedelic Amazonian cumbia, a sound
- 2:48young Peruvians keep rediscovering. A band that
- 2:52shaped the genre, playing a hometown crowd that
- 2:54grew up on their reissues and remixes. For a
- 2:57lot of Lima, that's more than a concert. It's
- 3:00a family history on stage. Forward signal. Tomorrow,
- 3:04Clara and the Sun hits theaters. Saturday, Los
- 3:07Mirlos play Lima. Sunday, Serbia votes, and Brazil
- 3:10holds its presidential runoff the same day. Amsterdam
- 3:13Dance Event runs through October 25. And keep
- 3:17an eye on France. If the bands hold, calm may
- 3:19follow. If not, the weekend could get loud again.
- 3:22That's your signal for today. Go see something,
- 3:24hear something, and talk to someone about it.
- 3:26This is Ground Signal Culture.
