Two long-lost 1970s murals by Chilean artist Julio Escámez, painted during a hopeful era of worker solidarity and hidden beneath layers of paint after the 1973 coup, are being painstakingly restored — with the first expected to be revealed by December 2027. Once commissioned by Chillán’s mayor and inspired by Mexican muralists, these powerful artworks were erased from public view during the dictatorship.
