Latest / Birdland Territory / The Orioles take the series over the Yankees behind Kyle Bradish
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: What a difference a week or so makes for the Orioles. Man,
- 0:09Speaker 1: they had their clock cleaned in the Bronx. They were
- 0:12Speaker 1: outscored thirty nine to ten by the Yankees. They didn't
- 0:16Speaker 1: lead in that series, and frankly, when it ended, it
- 0:18Speaker 1: looked like along on the same field, and the fans
- 0:21Speaker 1: were saying, and some of us were saying, it looked
- 0:24Speaker 1: like the Yankees were so far ahead of the Orioles.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Right now, a week later, the Yankees are one in
- 0:30Speaker 1: five to start their nine game road trip, and the
- 0:33Speaker 1: Orioles just beat them two out of three with a.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Seven nothing shutout.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Today, Kyle Bradish was brilliant and Birdland, I bet that
- 0:41Speaker 1: feels a little bit better. Steve Brad and Tim here
- 0:44Speaker 1: the latest edition of Birdland Territory. Brad, let's start with
- 0:48Speaker 1: you a major league pitcher watching a major league pitcher
- 0:50Speaker 1: work today, Man, Kyle Bradish, that was something.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Yeah, it was. I was really impressive.
- 0:57Speaker 4: He was locked in from manning one like he was
- 1:00Speaker 4: in control and command the entire game. His breaking ball
- 1:04Speaker 4: right now is as good as anybody's in the game.
- 1:07Speaker 4: That curveball he's throwing right now is just falling off
- 1:10Speaker 4: the table. That first thing, and that one to Ben Rice,
- 1:13Speaker 4: it seemed like it got to home plate and you
- 1:15Speaker 4: could tell by his swing the ball just landing in
- 1:17Speaker 4: front of home plate and he was swinging at it
- 1:18Speaker 4: like it was going to be at his waist.
- 1:20Speaker 3: So he's in full control right now.
- 1:21Speaker 4: He looks really good for me, just seeing his four
- 1:24Speaker 4: seam or having that little cut action on it. To me,
- 1:27Speaker 4: that's when I think he's at his best. I think
- 1:28Speaker 4: that's when he's behind the baseball. He gets that natural
- 1:31Speaker 4: little cut to it and it just makes everything else
- 1:33Speaker 4: play so much better.
- 1:34Speaker 3: On the broadcast today, Ben was talking about he.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Wanted to be more not lateral, but more vertical, so
- 1:40Speaker 4: he wants to go more towards home plate and he's
- 1:42Speaker 4: doing a really good job with that.
- 1:43Speaker 3: To me, when I see.
- 1:45Speaker 4: A curveball, you start seeing twelve to six, you're going
- 1:48Speaker 4: you're staying over the rubber and you're getting straight to
- 1:50Speaker 4: home plate. The last couple of weeks, his curveball was
- 1:53Speaker 4: kind of morphing into his sweep er Ie felt a
- 1:55Speaker 4: little bit and he wasn't getting that straight twelve to six,
- 1:58Speaker 4: And the last couple starts he's really made it adjustments
- 2:00Speaker 4: in the bullpen, and you can tell with his results.
- 2:04Speaker 5: He's looking like Kyle bradish again, guys. And now it's
- 2:07Speaker 5: two straight outings because you can go back to the
- 2:11Speaker 5: last Friday against the A's where he went seven innings,
- 2:14Speaker 5: gave up three earned runs, and really his defense let
- 2:17Speaker 5: him down. And Craig albern has owned it after that game,
- 2:20Speaker 5: saying that the o'ds showed the wheel play a little
- 2:23Speaker 5: too soon, ball ended up getting hit right to where
- 2:26Speaker 5: Gunnar Henderson would have been lined up and it would
- 2:29Speaker 5: have been a double play, and instead the A's got
- 2:31Speaker 5: three runs that inning. But here he was really strong.
- 2:36Speaker 5: And you mentioned the curveball, Brad, and I know Craig
- 2:38Speaker 5: Albern as he said after the game that that has
- 2:41Speaker 5: been the equalizer for Kyle Braddish. He got eight swings
- 2:45Speaker 5: and misses on that pitch and you're seeing the usage
- 2:49Speaker 5: go up. You go back to that start against the A's,
- 2:52Speaker 5: he threw it thirty point two percent of the time.
- 2:55Speaker 5: At that point it was a career high, and then
- 2:58Speaker 5: today he threw thirty one percent of the time. So
- 3:02Speaker 5: clearly he has a good feel for the curve ball
- 3:05Speaker 5: and he's getting a lot of swing and miss.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:09Speaker 4: I think back to that start he had, sorry that
- 3:12Speaker 4: start he had in Kansas City. I felt like he
- 3:14Speaker 4: was throwing his sweeper almost at that percentage, and that
- 3:17Speaker 4: just goes to show me he was getting more rotational,
- 3:19Speaker 4: so he was going more east to west as opposed
- 3:21Speaker 4: to north to south.
- 3:22Speaker 3: And I think he's a better pitcher.
- 3:24Speaker 4: And obviously that's what he said when he's going north
- 3:27Speaker 4: to south, because everything just plays up when he's throwing
- 3:29Speaker 4: that breaking ball four strike at the bottom.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Of the zone or below the zone.
- 3:33Speaker 4: He could just do whatever he wants from there and
- 3:35Speaker 4: he looks he looks awesome these last couple starts.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Speaking of north to south, Craig Aburn has told us
- 3:41Speaker 1: this morning about a subtle delivery adjustment he's also made
- 3:45Speaker 1: in addition with upping the curveball usage shorter to home
- 3:49Speaker 1: plate with his leg kick slightly. Not big difference, but
- 3:53Speaker 1: he felt like somehow that got his mechanics and his
- 3:56Speaker 1: body aligned better and rhythm better.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It just worked.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So if you look at these last two starts, shorter
- 4:02Speaker 1: stride to the plate, Brad, you might see it as
- 4:05Speaker 1: a former major league pitcher. I can't tell watching him,
- 4:08Speaker 1: but on video maybe if you look real close, you
- 4:11Speaker 1: see a little bit and the curve usage. So whatever
- 4:13Speaker 1: he found with a curveball, he's gone to it more.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We already know its slider is elite when it's on,
- 4:18Speaker 1: So man, that's two breaking balls he can really lock
- 4:21Speaker 1: in with.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Yeah, And to me, like I always talk about fastball
- 4:24Speaker 4: coman with me, he works off his off speed command
- 4:27Speaker 4: and I just feel like when he's able to land
- 4:29Speaker 4: both of those pitches, his fast office becomes elite, and
- 4:33Speaker 4: I think it turns two elite pitches into three or
- 4:36Speaker 4: four with you mix the sinker in there also, So
- 4:39Speaker 4: he's just I think I don't know if I'd be
- 4:41Speaker 4: able to see it on video because usually a lot
- 4:42Speaker 4: of times those mechanical adjustments are so minute. But obviously
- 4:46Speaker 4: it's working for him and Ben during a lot of
- 4:48Speaker 4: broadcasters talking about his arm dragging, I think a lot
- 4:51Speaker 4: of times, when you're able to get your front foot
- 4:52Speaker 4: down earlier, your arm swing becomes quicker, and he's probably
- 4:56Speaker 4: just timed everything up just a little bit better. And
- 4:58Speaker 4: obviously you can tell his last I really it's not
- 5:00Speaker 4: even just the last two starts.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I feel like the last three or four he's really
- 5:03Speaker 3: coming along here.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Well, Brad, just watching Kyle Bradish and he's always had
- 5:10Speaker 5: success following you know, his first season in the Big
- 5:12Speaker 5: Seaton finished top five in cy Young voting in twenty
- 5:15Speaker 5: twenty three and twenty twenty four when he's dealing with
- 5:18Speaker 5: the elbow paint. He was really strong coming back last year.
- 5:21Speaker 5: When you think of Kyle Bradish, you think of the
- 5:24Speaker 5: nasty stuff, like he has that top of the rotation stuff,
- 5:28Speaker 5: but some of what you hear, you know coming back
- 5:31Speaker 5: from Tommy John that the last thing to come fully
- 5:34Speaker 5: back is the command. And he did have three walks
- 5:37Speaker 5: again today, but it just seems like with each of
- 5:41Speaker 5: the past handful of starts he's getting back into that form.
- 5:45Speaker 5: He's getting more command.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely get in command and strike one. He's just
- 5:50Speaker 4: getting ahead of these guys and then from there you
- 5:52Speaker 4: can use whatever he wants. It's when he's doing that
- 5:54Speaker 4: four simular cuts. The reason I like it so much
- 5:56Speaker 4: is that they can't he keeps him honest, especially lefties
- 5:59Speaker 4: when they're on the sink. When he throws the sinker
- 6:01Speaker 4: away to the lefty, they always have to be conscious
- 6:03Speaker 4: of that cutter in. But it's not necessarily a cutter.
- 6:06Speaker 4: They have to they know the movement because I think
- 6:08Speaker 4: he thinks it's a forcing that just naturally cuts. And
- 6:11Speaker 4: I feel like those were always the nastiest cutters because
- 6:14Speaker 4: sometimes they move three inches, sometimes they move six inches.
- 6:17Speaker 4: It's a it's not on purpose type of thing. But
- 6:19Speaker 4: it's just the natural movement he has. And to me,
- 6:21Speaker 4: that's what the equalizer is to lefties. He gets ahead
- 6:24Speaker 4: with both of those fastballs, goes to the sweeper or
- 6:27Speaker 4: the curveball, and then from there, these guys are way
- 6:28Speaker 4: behind me a ball.
- 6:31Speaker 1: So the Yankees were averaging ten runs a game against
- 6:33Speaker 1: the Oriols in New York, and they got one hit
- 6:35Speaker 1: and shut out today, the first shutout for the Orioles.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Last MLB team to pitch one. And oh, by the way,
- 6:41Speaker 1: the last one hitter against the Yankees by the Orioles
- 6:44Speaker 1: was September twenty eighth, two thousand and six. It had
- 6:48Speaker 1: been a minute, and the Orioles got one today. And
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'll give you one more bratish stat and then we'll
- 6:53Speaker 1: come back and touch you on. Taylor Ward, Ben Rice
- 6:56Speaker 1: and Aaron Judge combined went oh for five against him
- 6:58Speaker 1: today with three a double play ball and a pop up.
- 7:02Speaker 2: They even hit the ball hard.
- 7:04Speaker 1: They went hitless against them, three strikeouts, a pop up
- 7:07Speaker 1: in a double play. Kyle Bradish was dominant against the
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yankees Birdlands. You might have your ace back. So that's
- 7:13Speaker 1: pretty exciting to see what he has done here. We
- 7:17Speaker 1: look forward to the next one. So Taylor Ward talk
- 7:20Speaker 1: is coming up next.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Big Dog.
- 7:22Speaker 6: You know how it is man, We're always hungry and
- 7:24Speaker 6: how do we get our food? We don't want the

- 7:38Speaker 7: I'm good at two things. Cooking is one of them,
- 7:41Speaker 7: but not trying to choose what we're gonna have. I've
- 7:44Speaker 7: gone fifteen meals so far and they haven't given me
- 7:47Speaker 7: one repeat meal. There's so many to choose from, and
- 7:50Speaker 7: they can make it easy for me.
- 7:51Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think the best part of it is
- 7:54Speaker 6: is for me. I'm very particular. I'm trying new things
- 7:57Speaker 6: and I'm really really liking these things from Hello Fresh.

- 8:24Speaker 1: So the Orioles take two of three against the Yankees.
- 8:26Speaker 1: The record now twenty and twenty four, and they had
- 8:30Speaker 1: lost four straight series to the Yankees, by the way,
- 8:33Speaker 1: since their last win before this one April of twenty
- 8:36Speaker 1: twenty five, So it have been over a calendar year
- 8:39Speaker 1: for the Oriols to win a series in the Yankees.
- 8:41Speaker 1: So what happened in the Bronx? This was much better
- 8:45Speaker 1: for the Orioles. Hope you'll subscribe to Birdland Territory on
- 8:48Speaker 1: our YouTube and follow us on the podcast networks as well.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Let's check in on Daily Dingers. Time for Daily Dingers
- 9:00Speaker 1: by a fan duel and as we look ahead to
- 9:02Speaker 1: this game, next series for the Oriols. The next game
- 9:06Speaker 1: Friday night at NAT's Park. I'm going to nominate Taylor
- 9:09Speaker 1: Award for this. Not only is he due to hit
- 9:12Speaker 1: a home or we know, just one all year, and
- 9:14Speaker 1: he hit thirty some last year. But he has some
- 9:16Speaker 1: good numbers both against the Nationals career ops over one
- 9:20Speaker 1: thousand and in NAT's Park. Small sample, but six for fourteen. So, guys,
- 9:25Speaker 1: what about Taylor Wards season? This has just been interesting.
- 9:28Speaker 1: He had a stretch here that just ended, I think
- 9:31Speaker 1: the last day or two where he had twelve games
- 9:33Speaker 1: where his batting average was sixty three and is on
- 9:37Speaker 1: base was four to twenty. I've never seen that. That's crazy.
- 9:41Speaker 1: He walked like nineteen times, and as of today pregame,
- 9:46Speaker 1: he has been on base eighty one times. That leads
- 9:49Speaker 1: the major leagues, though, by the way, got on base
- 9:51Speaker 1: a few more times today. The power is not there
- 9:53Speaker 1: right now. Homer power doubles. Power was there earlier. But man,
- 9:57Speaker 1: the eye and the walks and the things he's doing.
- 10:00Speaker 1: What are your thoughts watching Taylor Word, both long form
- 10:03Speaker 1: season and some of these recent games.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he's getting on base.
- 10:09Speaker 4: He's doing what you're supposed to do, and no matter
- 10:11Speaker 4: how you can get on base, you get on base.
- 10:13Speaker 4: To me, he seems at a little almost too selective.
- 10:17Speaker 4: If I'm watching him pit, if I'm watching him hit,
- 10:20Speaker 4: I feel like there's some counts where I feel like
- 10:22Speaker 4: I want to see him swing out of his shoes.
- 10:24Speaker 4: That would be the only thing I would say as
- 10:26Speaker 4: an opposing picture. Right now, I feel like you can
- 10:28Speaker 4: attack him in the zone. He's just as long as
- 10:31Speaker 4: you're on the edges he's gonna take. It's almost like
- 10:33Speaker 4: he's not he just doesn't want to swing. But his
- 10:36Speaker 4: eye has been so unbelievable. He has not been chasing.
- 10:39Speaker 4: He's making these pitchers keep the ball in the zone.
- 10:42Speaker 4: But the last couple of games, he's starting to swing earlier,
- 10:45Speaker 4: and he's starting to use the right side of the field,
- 10:47Speaker 4: and I think that is what's going to lead to
- 10:49Speaker 4: pitchers starting to come more in the zone and come
- 10:51Speaker 4: inside a little bit more. He said he noticed that
- 10:54Speaker 4: pictures had really been attacking him away this season and
- 10:57Speaker 4: he really had to change his approach at the play.
- 11:00Speaker 4: To me, when I see him start taking hits the
- 11:01Speaker 4: other way, that means pisiers are gonna start coming inside.
- 11:04Speaker 4: And he's got tons of juice, as we know, and
- 11:06Speaker 4: I think he's gonna start turning on some balls here soon.
- 11:09Speaker 5: Brad. I think you hit on the head, that's exactly
- 11:11Speaker 5: what I was gonna say. There's been points where he's
- 11:13Speaker 5: just a little too selective, where you know he's too
- 11:17Speaker 5: willing to take. But maybe some of this has to
- 11:20Speaker 5: do with an injury. And we'll give a hat tip
- 11:23Speaker 5: to Matt Wirich, who covers the o's for the Baltimore Sun.
- 11:26Speaker 5: He tweeted this out this morning, where Taylor Ward was
- 11:30Speaker 5: hit on the hand on April fourteenth, and at that
- 11:34Speaker 5: point he started wearing a thick padded handguard and he
- 11:38Speaker 5: traded it in for a thinner pad yesterday. You look
- 11:41Speaker 5: at Taylor Ward's numbers. Before April fourteenth, he had a
- 11:44Speaker 5: four to ninety two slugging percentage sixteen point eight percent
- 11:48Speaker 5: chase rate, so he was chasing much more. Ten of
- 11:52Speaker 5: his twenty two hits were doubles. He was Taylor two
- 11:56Speaker 5: bags and then April fourteenth, ninety four slug eleven point
- 12:02Speaker 5: two percent chase rate, four doubles, one home run in
- 12:06Speaker 5: seventeen hits heading into today, So I think some of
- 12:10Speaker 5: it maybe even just survival at this point, I guess
- 12:13Speaker 5: with the injury, I can only imagine getting hit on
- 12:16Speaker 5: a hand that has to not be fun at all.
- 12:20Speaker 5: But Taylor Ward's coming off the season in which he
- 12:22Speaker 5: hit thirty six home runs drove in over one hundred runs.
- 12:27Speaker 5: I'm with you, Brad At you know, at some point
- 12:30Speaker 5: you just take what you can get in terms off
- 12:32Speaker 5: you're getting on base at the clip that he is,
- 12:35Speaker 5: you absolutely will take it. But you know that this
- 12:38Speaker 5: guy does have power and he does have the ability
- 12:41Speaker 5: to really affect the game with his bat.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Yeah, And honestly, I think when you sent that tweet
- 12:48Speaker 4: this morning and I saw it, Obviously it's just speculation
- 12:51Speaker 4: at this point, but if he's if his HNT is
- 12:53Speaker 4: bothering him, what's going to bother him is trying to
- 12:55Speaker 4: turn on the ball.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I feel like.
- 12:57Speaker 4: When you take those big swings inside, that's really where
- 12:59Speaker 4: you feel your hand if you're gonna be taking those swings.
- 13:03Speaker 3: So it could definitely be part of it.
- 13:04Speaker 4: But I think going to the thinner pad and starting
- 13:06Speaker 4: to attack a little bit earlier.
- 13:08Speaker 3: I think him being.
- 13:09Speaker 4: So selective is only going to help him here, even
- 13:11Speaker 4: if it's only for a couple weeks and then pitchers
- 13:13Speaker 4: make adjustments, then they go back to doing what they're doing.
- 13:15Speaker 4: But I think if he goes out there attacking he's
- 13:17Speaker 4: gonna get some good pitches to hit, and I feel
- 13:19Speaker 4: like the power numbers are not too far around the corner.
- 13:23Speaker 1: So today I looked at some basic power numbers, not
- 13:27Speaker 1: home runs, but I looked at exit velocity. How hard
- 13:29Speaker 1: is he hitting the ball? Is he hitting it hard?
- 13:32Speaker 1: Eighty eight point four is his average? Last year was
- 13:34Speaker 1: ninety point one. That doesn't sound like a big difference,
- 13:37Speaker 1: but it's his lowest exit velocity by average since twenty
- 13:40Speaker 1: twenty one. Hard hit percentage last year forty two to
- 13:44Speaker 1: seven this year thirty six. That's down lowest since twenty
- 13:49Speaker 1: twenty one. So some of these numbers are really down
- 13:53Speaker 1: for him. And he also went sixteen straight games without
- 13:56Speaker 1: extra base hit until he got a double Tuesday night.
- 13:59Speaker 1: So it's gonna be interesting to see how this plays
- 14:02Speaker 1: out for this guy who's prolific getting on base and
- 14:06Speaker 1: might have the best eye in the game right now,
- 14:08Speaker 1: but is not driving the ball the way we're used
- 14:11Speaker 1: to sing him. Is it about the hand? Are there
- 14:13Speaker 1: other things at work?
- 14:15Speaker 5: To me?
- 14:15Speaker 1: Some of those things are fascinating to watch unfold over
- 14:18Speaker 1: a long season, which will tell the tale.
- 14:21Speaker 2: And the other thing.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Brad and Tim, if you're playing every day. It's easy
- 14:25Speaker 1: for me to sit on the couch and say this,
- 14:27Speaker 1: he's well enough to play, and they're putting him in
- 14:31Speaker 1: the lineup. The medical people are saying he's he can play.
- 14:34Speaker 1: But if it's impacting an aspect of his game, that's
- 14:38Speaker 1: interesting too. It's a lot going on here and a
- 14:41Speaker 1: lot to be considered, I think, And overall, I still
- 14:44Speaker 1: give this guy pretty good grades for what he's doing
- 14:46Speaker 1: for the Orioles.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, like I said, it's at the end
- 14:50Speaker 4: of the day, it's about getting on bass. Yes, you know,
- 14:53Speaker 4: we want to see him hit more doubles, see him
- 14:55Speaker 4: hit more homers, But at this point there's guys in
- 14:57Speaker 4: the lineup that you can expect to do that even
- 14:59Speaker 4: more or so, and it to me, it's just getting
- 15:02Speaker 4: guys on base and getting them in and that's a
- 15:04Speaker 4: At this point, it's kind of win as many games
- 15:06Speaker 4: as you can.
- 15:06Speaker 3: However you can do it.
- 15:07Speaker 4: And you know, you had good double the other day
- 15:10Speaker 4: and he's just he's starting to take better swing. So
- 15:12Speaker 4: that's that's the encouraging part of it all. And you
- 15:14Speaker 4: had on base on top of that, there's some slugging
- 15:17Speaker 4: in there, and then you never know what kind of
- 15:18Speaker 4: player you're looking at here, come to June, Steve.
- 15:21Speaker 5: If I got hit by a ninety plus mile per
- 15:23Speaker 5: hour pitch, just take me out back like.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Just and me I'm done.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Like this guy is still playing every single day, He's
- 15:31Speaker 5: still producing. Yeah, he's producing in a different way than
- 15:34Speaker 5: we expected heading into the year. But I give Taylor
- 15:38Speaker 5: Ward a ton of credit for toughing it out.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Man.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Guys, some in baseball, something that's a big deal a
- 15:44Speaker 1: week later is forgotten. Remember Pete Alonzo, Oh, his bat
- 15:48Speaker 1: speeds down. No one ever brings up his bat speed anymore.
- 15:51Speaker 1: The Orioles, they'll they get crushed by the Yankees all year.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Well they didn't get crushed in Baltimore. Things changed fast,
- 15:59Speaker 1: and Taylor war might pop five homers in the next
- 16:01Speaker 1: ten days and we'll be talking about that. So he
- 16:04Speaker 1: is a pick here Daily Dinger pick for us for Friday,
- 16:08Speaker 1: And let's see how Taylor Ward does against the Nats
- 16:11Speaker 1: team he likes to hit against in a park where.
- 16:12Speaker 2: He does like to hit.

- 16:43Speaker 1: I think we can should get a hat tip for
- 16:45Speaker 1: Blaize Alexander today. Three hits, drop that bunch single, help
- 16:49Speaker 1: start that rally. He's played mostly steady defense this year,
- 16:53Speaker 1: with a few exceptions here and there. And he to me,
- 16:55Speaker 1: he just is a great guy in the clubhouse. He's
- 16:58Speaker 1: a he's a great guy to talk where. He has
- 17:00Speaker 1: so much energy. He likes that place up and so
- 17:06Speaker 1: in the role he's in guys utility and he's playing
- 17:09Speaker 1: a lot now because of injuries.
- 17:11Speaker 2: He's gonna be vital for the Orioles.
- 17:13Speaker 4: I think, yeah, you know, he's one of those guys
- 17:16Speaker 4: that we kind of talk about where they be without him.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I mean he's been able to play. I mean I
- 17:21Speaker 3: feel like he's.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Played everywhere except for catcher, first maybe rightfield and leftfield.
- 17:25Speaker 4: The guy's been everywhere he's been playing every position, and
- 17:28Speaker 4: that's what you kind of look for from a utility player.
- 17:30Speaker 4: You know, you're not looking for big home run numbers,
- 17:32Speaker 4: big slugging, all this stuff. It's playsolets the defense and
- 17:36Speaker 4: get on base and run the bases when you're out there,
- 17:37Speaker 4: and that's that's exactly what he does. That's what I
- 17:39Speaker 4: see when I watch him play. He plays with a
- 17:41Speaker 4: ton of energy. He plays with a ton of enthusiasm,
- 17:44Speaker 4: and it's really cool to see. You can tell guys
- 17:47Speaker 4: like playing with him. And I kind of liked the
- 17:49Speaker 4: other night when he had the tag down of the game.
- 17:51Speaker 4: I kind of like that cockiness. It's the game's over.
- 17:53Speaker 4: I know I tagged him. Let's start wrapping up, but
- 17:55Speaker 4: we won. I don't know what they're looking at here.
- 17:57Speaker 4: I like guys like that. They always seem to fire
- 17:59Speaker 4: up the club and they're just confident. But you know
- 18:01Speaker 4: they look in the mirror and they see six foot
- 18:04Speaker 4: seven and they're a home run hitter. And you know
- 18:06Speaker 4: he's I don't know how tall he is, but I
- 18:08Speaker 4: know he's not six seven, and I know he's not
- 18:09Speaker 4: a home run hitters.
- 18:10Speaker 3: But when he looks at himself in the mirror.
- 18:12Speaker 4: That's what he sees, and it's cool to see that
- 18:13Speaker 4: kind of enthusiasm and just having fun out there playing
- 18:16Speaker 4: the game.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Every team needs that type of player, right, Like he's
- 18:22Speaker 5: kind of that stereotypical glue guy. Like you're not asking
- 18:26Speaker 5: this guy to be an All Star, You're not asking
- 18:28Speaker 5: him to carry the team, but I think you could
- 18:32Speaker 5: even ask. You know, Michael Ias would even say that
- 18:35Speaker 5: he's been counted on a heck of a lot more
- 18:37Speaker 5: than he anticipated. You know, when they brought him in,
- 18:40Speaker 5: it was right before Jackson Holidays sustained the ham apone
- 18:43Speaker 5: injury and then Jordan Westberg went down with an injury.
- 18:46Speaker 5: So it's really necessitated Blaze to be in pretty much
- 18:51Speaker 5: in everyday type role and he's absolutely holding his own.
- 18:55Speaker 5: And now the bat's starting to come back around again.
- 18:59Speaker 5: The bat was hot to start the season, then it
- 19:01Speaker 5: kind of fell off for a while. But within the
- 19:03Speaker 5: past week to ten days that the bat's been coming
- 19:07Speaker 5: back for him and he's been producing.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Well.
- 19:10Speaker 1: An entirely different topic, injuries one we cannot avoid in
- 19:15Speaker 1: Birdland this year. Just in this series, you had the
- 19:19Speaker 1: SiO scratched and then he's okay to play beaver scratched.
- 19:24Speaker 2: And then he goes on the il oblique.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Jordan Westberg gets the follow up opinion, and now we
- 19:31Speaker 1: were told today he's gathering with his agents and his
- 19:34Speaker 1: supporters and all his family, his folks, to decide what's
- 19:38Speaker 1: his next steps, which doesn't sound great and sounds like
- 19:42Speaker 1: he might be headed for surgery.
- 19:43Speaker 2: That's my speculation. Not announced, We don't know anything yet.
- 19:47Speaker 1: We probably will very soon, but if that happens, I
- 19:50Speaker 1: think all of Birdland will feel bad for Jordan Westburg.
- 19:53Speaker 1: We know how important this guy is to the lineup.
- 19:55Speaker 1: We've seen it, the stats tell it. They just cannot
- 20:00Speaker 1: avoid the injury bug. You hope that when we are
- 20:03Speaker 1: talking in October, we're not saying they didn't make it
- 20:07Speaker 1: because at some point they just couldn't overcome all the injuries.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:12Speaker 4: And it's like I've kind of mentioned before, I think
- 20:14Speaker 4: baseball is kind of evolutionized to where there's just injuries
- 20:18Speaker 4: seem to happen more for whatever reason. Nobody really knows why,
- 20:21Speaker 4: but it just seems to happen more. It's just I
- 20:24Speaker 4: feel like the Orioles have reached their macs of what
- 20:27Speaker 4: they could possibly handle and continue to stay in the hunt.
- 20:30Speaker 4: It's not just you know, role players, it's not just
- 20:34Speaker 4: a couple of stars. I feel like it's been four
- 20:36Speaker 4: or five of the starters. It's been three or four
- 20:38Speaker 4: of the starters on offense. It just seems to be
- 20:40Speaker 4: piling on here, and you just wonder how long they
- 20:43Speaker 4: can hold the damn up before it just kind of
- 20:45Speaker 4: falls apart. With the kind of injuries they've been having.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I feel like Dylan Beavers was really putting together some
- 20:50Speaker 4: really good at bats in the last week or two,
- 20:52Speaker 4: and it kind of hurts. Now you get that, you know,
- 20:54Speaker 4: right fielder, we can be out there almost every single
- 20:56Speaker 4: day and can provide you some outfield defense. But his
- 20:59Speaker 4: bat was really starting to come around, and for rookie,
- 21:01Speaker 4: a young guy playing, that's what you want to see
- 21:04Speaker 4: is try to get them regular bats and get him
- 21:06Speaker 4: accustomed to be in the major leagues. And it's just
- 21:09Speaker 4: another one that hurts because now it sets it back
- 21:10Speaker 4: at least ten more days, and he kind of losed
- 21:12Speaker 4: that flow he was starting to get into.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Baseball is a very superstitious sport. I don't know what
- 21:19Speaker 5: the clubhouse needs to do. I don't know if they
- 21:21Speaker 5: need to bring in an etsty Witch or whatever. Something
- 21:24Speaker 5: needs to happen because heading into this year we're talking
- 21:29Speaker 5: about there has to be positive regression, right in terms
- 21:33Speaker 5: of the injuries, where last year the Orioles they had
- 21:36Speaker 5: seventy different players, over seventy play a game for them.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Last year it was crazy. We're doing Beaver's he became
- 21:45Speaker 5: the nineteenth player to be placed on the IL and
- 21:48Speaker 5: it's May thirteenth, we're not even a Memorial Day yet.
- 21:52Speaker 5: And with Beavers, anytime you hear an old bleak for
- 21:55Speaker 5: a hitter, it's it's a tricky situation. We saw it
- 21:59Speaker 5: last year with Rochman where he hurt one side and
- 22:03Speaker 5: then he came back and he hurt the other. So
- 22:05Speaker 5: those situations are definitely really, really tough. And Jordan Westburg,
- 22:10Speaker 5: Steve you said it, and we talked about him on
- 22:12Speaker 5: a prior episode. It's night and day this offense and
- 22:16Speaker 5: what they're able to do with him in the lineup
- 22:19Speaker 5: and without You can go back to his first game
- 22:22Speaker 5: where he debuted for the Orioles and since today, you know,
- 22:27Speaker 5: they averaged close to half a run more per game
- 22:31Speaker 5: with Jordan Westburg in the lineup compared to without him.
- 22:35Speaker 5: And unfortunately, I'm with you, Steve, it looks like they're
- 22:38Speaker 5: going to be without him the rest of the year.
- 22:42Speaker 1: So one good news on the Beavers front. Post game today,
- 22:45Speaker 1: auburnaz did say it's a low grade oblique strain and
- 22:50Speaker 1: he was feeling better as soon as today.
- 22:51Speaker 2: They put him on the eye out.
- 22:53Speaker 1: It's ten days, so hopefully at the end of that
- 22:56Speaker 1: period they'll be getting close to getting him back because,
- 22:58Speaker 1: as you said, Brad, he's starting to swing it. He's
- 23:00Speaker 1: starting to finally settle into this season. And Westburg again,
- 23:05Speaker 1: this is my speculation. This has come from the team
- 23:08Speaker 1: we're talking about in the press box today. If Capitol,
- 23:11Speaker 1: if a player has a procedure that's a position player
- 23:15Speaker 1: that's eight to ten months, it can be so he
- 23:18Speaker 1: could be full go opening day twenty twenty seven. Again,
- 23:21Speaker 1: if and so others have. Bryce Harper was record speed
- 23:25Speaker 1: with this, and he's first baseman, not third, of course,
- 23:28Speaker 1: so we'll see out all plays out. But if there's
- 23:32Speaker 1: any hint of good news here whatsoever, it could be
- 23:35Speaker 1: that this, hopefully for Jordan Westburg, does not impact two seasons.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, I think that's probably what he's discussing with
- 23:45Speaker 4: his team. Do we want to try the rehab and
- 23:47Speaker 4: maybe not come back the right way and then miss
- 23:50Speaker 4: part of next season, or do we just get it
- 23:51Speaker 4: done now and so we're ready to go for opening
- 23:54Speaker 4: day next year. And it stinks anytime a guy gets
- 23:57Speaker 4: an injury like that and you know the season's done,
- 23:59Speaker 4: it's got to be so just and you just know,
- 24:01Speaker 4: you you put all the work in the off season
- 24:03Speaker 4: and it just happened so early and now you've had
- 24:06Speaker 4: a lost season, and it's just I hope he's able
- 24:08Speaker 4: to go and you know, figure out what he wants
- 24:10Speaker 4: to do and just have the best way that gets
- 24:12Speaker 4: him to be the best player he can moving forward.
- 24:16Speaker 5: D Yeah, Jordan Westburg, he's still such a young player. Guys,
- 24:21Speaker 5: where you got to think long term. If you're him
- 24:24Speaker 5: and I'm sure his agent and Scott this is his agent,
- 24:32Speaker 5: you're you're He's a heck of player. He's a heck
- 24:35Speaker 5: of a talent him, and and it's just really unfortunate
- 24:38Speaker 5: the setback after setback over the past year and a half.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and as he has said, Mississippi State, no problems.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Good to go every day now that he got into
- 24:47Speaker 1: pro ball, all of a sudden, all these issues have
- 24:50Speaker 1: cropped up. Great teammate, great leader in the clubhouse, and
- 24:53Speaker 1: we can't wait to see him back in there. We
- 24:55Speaker 1: got a few final comments coming your way on this
- 24:58Speaker 1: edition of Berdland Terra two.

- 25:20Speaker 1: So, guys, what does it mean that the Orioles did
- 25:22Speaker 1: win this series and maybe knock on wood this time
- 25:26Speaker 1: they'll take some momentum and ride it out.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I say that in the context of this statistic.
- 25:31Speaker 1: We gave on this show about a week ago. At
- 25:33Speaker 1: one point, the Orioles against current winning teams were one
- 25:37Speaker 1: to twelve. Since Sunday they are three and one against
- 25:41Speaker 1: current winning teams, beating the A's and beating the Yankees
- 25:45Speaker 1: two out of three. That's better and you have to
- 25:48Speaker 1: show you can do it. And now I guess the
- 25:50Speaker 1: message is they just have to do it more often?
- 25:53Speaker 2: Can they?
- 25:56Speaker 3: I think so?
- 25:56Speaker 4: I think that this series, I know, I feel like
- 25:59Speaker 4: you was more crushing when they got swept in New
- 26:02Speaker 4: York than it would have been if they got swept
- 26:03Speaker 4: by let's just say the Guardians or the A's or
- 26:05Speaker 4: something like that. But for some reason, the Yankees series
- 26:08Speaker 4: just seemed to hold more weight. I know as a player,
- 26:11Speaker 4: you don't really think about it a ton, but it
- 26:13Speaker 4: had to feel good. The win two had a three.
- 26:15Speaker 4: This series, after what happened in New York, had to
- 26:17Speaker 4: feel really good. And I'm with then McDonald. He made
- 26:19Speaker 4: comments at the end of the game today just talking
- 26:22Speaker 4: about how grabbing the momentum and carrying it into the
- 26:26Speaker 4: next series, and I feel like that's been the hardest
- 26:27Speaker 4: part with this team so far to this point, was
- 26:30Speaker 4: grabbing some momentum and being able to carry it into
- 26:33Speaker 4: whether it was the next game after a big win
- 26:35Speaker 4: or the next series after a big series win. We
- 26:37Speaker 4: haven't been able to see that, and I would love
- 26:39Speaker 4: to see that this weekend in DC. I used to
- 26:41Speaker 4: love playing in this series. I feel like it had
- 26:43Speaker 4: a lot of juice when we played. When I was there,
- 26:46Speaker 4: there were some really good teams. We both had really
- 26:47Speaker 4: good teams that maybe played into a little bit more.
- 26:49Speaker 4: But there's just an energy in the ballpark that's different
- 26:53Speaker 4: than playing somebody else that's not near the area. And
- 26:57Speaker 4: it's just a fun series to be a part of.
- 26:59Speaker 4: I hope that these guys can stay up for these
- 27:01Speaker 4: three games like they were against the Yankees and just
- 27:03Speaker 4: kind of grab this momentum and really run with it.
- 27:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's tough, right, guys like you sort
- 27:10Speaker 5: of saw that where the first game you're being no
- 27:14Speaker 5: hit through the first six innings and then Kobe Mayo
- 27:17Speaker 5: comes up with the big three run shot. They end
- 27:19Speaker 5: up winning that ball game and really stealing it, and
- 27:22Speaker 5: you think, okay, all right, and then the next game, boom,
- 27:24Speaker 5: you blink your eye. You're down six to nothing after
- 27:27Speaker 5: the first three innings. But hey, they dominated the game
- 27:30Speaker 5: today and won at seven and nothing. But it's about
- 27:35Speaker 5: stacking it right now. And there's a lot of positives
- 27:37Speaker 5: to take from this series. The bullpen guys. They went
- 27:41Speaker 5: eight and two third shutout innings against the Yankees, and
- 27:45Speaker 5: that even includes last night being kind of a one
- 27:48Speaker 5: sided game. Kyle Bradish was fantastic. Really, the pitching staff,
- 27:52Speaker 5: as crazy as it is to think, the Yankees only
- 27:55Speaker 5: scored in three up the twenty seven innings, so the
- 27:59Speaker 5: Orioles definitely have to feel very good about themselves winning
- 28:04Speaker 5: that series. And if you would have told us or
- 28:07Speaker 5: any Oriole fan that they were gonna win the series,
- 28:09Speaker 5: you take that every single day of the week. But
- 28:12Speaker 5: you're right now, it's about building on it and this
- 28:15Speaker 5: Nats team that they're under five hundred, but it's the
- 28:17Speaker 5: scrappy ball club and that offense has been very potent,
- 28:20Speaker 5: and I think that it's going to be a big
- 28:23Speaker 5: challenge for the Orioles starting staff and the bullpen.
- 28:28Speaker 1: It'll mean more for the Orioles the Yankee Series win
- 28:32Speaker 1: if they go win this weekend.
- 28:33Speaker 2: They don't have to roll three wins.
- 28:35Speaker 1: It's hard to sweep anybody at any time, but keep
- 28:38Speaker 1: momentum going because guess what the raiser after that.
- 28:42Speaker 2: It's never an easy road.
- 28:44Speaker 1: And we've already noted how big an Al East a
- 28:47Speaker 1: schedule they've got coming up. So hopefully this is the
- 28:51Speaker 1: time to start to make some move for the Orioles.
- 28:54Speaker 1: And it's going to be fascinating to see guys because
- 28:56Speaker 1: they are beat up. It's just you know, the off
- 29:00Speaker 1: for Thursday comes at a great time. Fifteen days in
- 29:02Speaker 1: fourteen fifteen games, fourteen days.
- 29:05Speaker 2: I think that's crazy.
- 29:06Speaker 1: This team does need an off day and then a
- 29:09Speaker 1: short trip to DC, so maybe they get freshened up
- 29:12Speaker 1: here over the next few days.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Yeah, And I would love to see Shane bas come
- 29:16Speaker 4: out Friday and just really just attack and go after
- 29:18Speaker 4: guys and just kind of give that really good start
- 29:22Speaker 4: that we've been hoping to see and kind of just
- 29:24Speaker 4: build up the momentum. Bradish started today and they had
- 29:27Speaker 4: a good start on Monday with Brandon Young, and I
- 29:29Speaker 4: just would love to see one time through the rotation,
- 29:32Speaker 4: every guy go out there and just really put up
- 29:34Speaker 4: a good start and give this offense a chance to
- 29:36Speaker 4: get the lead to get into the bullpen. And another
- 29:38Speaker 4: point too is I would love to I'm curious to
- 29:40Speaker 4: see if they go with the bullpen guy to start
- 29:42Speaker 4: Bassett's game again because it works so well. They haven't
- 29:44Speaker 4: announced anything, and I would just be curious if they
- 29:46Speaker 4: have an opener just because it went so well the
- 29:48Speaker 4: last start. I'm curious if they tried it again and
- 29:50Speaker 4: see what happens there.
- 29:53Speaker 5: You would love to see just this starting rotation kind
- 29:56Speaker 5: of just pass the baton. We've seen a a couple
- 30:00Speaker 5: goods starts in a row, maybe three at most, But
- 30:03Speaker 5: you're right, Brad, we haven't seen all the way through
- 30:06Speaker 5: one through five, and you know, heading into today, I
- 30:10Speaker 5: think it's shocking to think when you think of the
- 30:13Speaker 5: potential of this group. I think there were twenty ninth
- 30:17Speaker 5: in starting rotation era heading into today's game. Trevor Rodgers,
- 30:21Speaker 5: even after the game yesterday and it was a rough
- 30:23Speaker 5: goal of it for him, he still talked very highly
- 30:27Speaker 5: about this starting staff and really believes in himself, believes
- 30:30Speaker 5: in the potential of this starting rotation.
- 30:34Speaker 1: So the O's beat the Yankee seven and nothing and
- 30:36Speaker 1: they win this series. Quick reminder those fans that we
