- 0:00Speaker 1: There is a moment in this text that should stop
- 0:03Speaker 1: you cold. A group of soldiers takes Jesus, dresses him
- 0:08Speaker 1: in a purple robe, presses a crown of thorns into
- 0:12Speaker 1: his skull, and bows down before him, laughing. Hail, King
- 0:18Speaker 1: of the Jews! A mob shouts at him to save himself.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Religious leaders who had studied scripture said, Their entire lives
- 0:30Speaker 1: sneer and walk away satisfied. Every single one of them
- 0:35Speaker 1: thought they were watching a joke. Not one of them
- 0:38Speaker 1: knew they were kneeling before the king of the universe,
- 0:44Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. That's the most profound irony in human history.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The moment God was most fully present on earth, was
- 0:55Speaker 1: the moment the world was most certain he had failed.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And Mark wants you to sit in that tension because
- 1:05Speaker 1: the same mistake is being made today. Yes, they're still
- 1:14Speaker 1: making the same mistakes, unfortunately, today. Hello, everyone. I'm Dr. Fish.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Welcome to our lesson summary for today. Jesus bears God's wrath.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Mark 15, verses 16 through 39. The big idea of
- 1:31Speaker 1: our passage that we're going to be looking at is
- 1:34Speaker 1: the man everyone wrote off as a failure was the
- 1:37Speaker 1: Son of God, exactly who he claimed to be. Our introduction,
- 1:47Speaker 1: the people had a choice in that day. They could
- 1:51Speaker 1: have chosen Barabbas, an insurrectionist, let me say that again,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I think you'll catch it, Barabbas, an insurrectionist, or they
- 2:04Speaker 1: could have chosen Jesus. And that choice tells us everything
- 2:10Speaker 1: about the people in that day and for that matter
- 2:14Speaker 1: even today. As one scholar put it, the world will
- 2:17Speaker 1: follow a political savior who offers economic security but rejects
- 2:24Speaker 1: the gospel of a savior who calls everyone to be saved.
- 2:31Speaker 1: People want a savior who fixes their problems, but will
- 2:34Speaker 1: walk away from a savior who died for their sins.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And so the world is still doing the same thing
- 2:42Speaker 1: that they did then in that day, choosing materialism over righteousness,
- 2:48Speaker 1: sin over the savior. Modern day Barabbas over Jesus. And
- 2:56Speaker 1: so our passage is a try to make it as
- 3:00Speaker 1: simple as possible. Took me a long time as I
- 3:03Speaker 1: was wrestling with this passage or I should say God
- 3:06Speaker 1: was wrestling with me to break this thing up and
- 3:09Speaker 1: make it as simple and as plain as possible. because
- 3:12Speaker 1: this was a tough one. Jesus bears God's wrath three
- 3:15Speaker 1: different ways. Number one, through his suffering, he endured rejection
- 3:19Speaker 1: and pain, taking what we deserve. He endured, Jesus bears
- 3:24Speaker 1: God's wrath through his separation. He faced the Father's withdrawal,
- 3:29Speaker 1: experiencing what we fear, and then Jesus bears God's wrath
- 3:35Speaker 1: by accomplishing, let me say it this way, salvation. He
- 3:40Speaker 1: broke down barriers, opening the path back to God. So,
- 3:48Speaker 1: in a nutshell here, as we move to the first point,
- 3:53Speaker 1: Jesus bears God's wrath. Jesus bears God's wrath through his suffering. So,
- 4:04Speaker 1: He took what we deserved while the world rejected him.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So that covers verses 16 through 20, 26, as well
- 4:13Speaker 1: as 29 through 32. The Jews wanted deliverance from Rome,
- 4:18Speaker 1: from the dominion of Rome, but failed to realize they
- 4:22Speaker 1: had a much deeper problem. The deeper problem was the
- 4:26Speaker 1: dominion of sin, which was far worse. So they mocked Jesus,
- 4:32Speaker 1: didn't believe him. They didn't know who he was. They
- 4:35Speaker 1: rejected him. And so what kind of suffering did he
- 4:39Speaker 1: endure for us? He suffered through scorn. When we look
- 4:43Speaker 1: at verses 16 through 20, the soldiers didn't just beat Jesus.
- 4:49Speaker 1: They humiliated him. They put a purple robe on him,
- 4:53Speaker 1: crown of thorns, pressed it on his head, put a
- 4:56Speaker 1: reed for a scepter in his hand. In other words,
- 4:59Speaker 1: making fun of him. They dropped to their knees, not
- 5:02Speaker 1: in worship, right? But in mockery, shouting, Hail, King of
- 5:07Speaker 1: the Jews. Every detail, everything they did was designed to
- 5:13Speaker 1: make him look ridiculous. But here's the irony in the
- 5:18Speaker 1: midst of all of this. The robe, the purple robe,
- 5:22Speaker 1: the crown, the title, all of it, in all honesty,
- 5:26Speaker 1: it was true about him. They dressed him like a
- 5:29Speaker 1: king as a joke to them personally. He wore it
- 5:32Speaker 1: like a king because that is exactly who he is.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So he suffered through scorn. There's a lot that happened there.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I'm cutting out, but I got to cut across the field.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It's just a lesson summary. But then he suffered through shouts.
- 5:48Speaker 1: He suffered through shouts. The crowd taunted him with his
- 5:52Speaker 1: own words. You know, talk about, you know, why don't
- 5:58Speaker 1: you save yourself, right? And remember, Jesus said, if you
- 6:03Speaker 1: tear this temple down, I'll raise it up again in
- 6:06Speaker 1: three days. And they took that the wrong way. They
- 6:11Speaker 1: thought he was talking about the physical building. He was
- 6:13Speaker 1: talking about his resurrection. The philosophy of individuals during that
- 6:18Speaker 1: day was all about saving yourself. It was all about
- 6:22Speaker 1: being selfish. But saving himself was never the point. That
- 6:28Speaker 1: was never obviously God's will. Yes, he healed the sick.
- 6:31Speaker 1: He always saved others. He made the lame walk, raised
- 6:36Speaker 1: the dead. His whole ministry was about saving others. He
- 6:41Speaker 1: could have called 72,000 angels. Remember, he mentioned this in Gethsemane,
- 6:46Speaker 1: but he didn't. Why? Because he was dying. It wasn't
- 6:52Speaker 1: about saving himself in a nutshell. He was dying for
- 6:55Speaker 1: others because this was the will of God. It was
- 7:00Speaker 1: not about him saving his life, but it was about
- 7:03Speaker 1: him losing his life so that he could save yours.
- 7:08Speaker 1: So he suffered through scorn. He suffered through shouts, but
- 7:14Speaker 1: then he suffered through sarcasm. The religious leaders were the
- 7:19Speaker 1: most educated men at the cross. These are the men
- 7:24Speaker 1: who memorized the entire Torah. That's kind of like an
- 7:30Speaker 1: assignment I had when I was in seminary. Well, I
- 7:34Speaker 1: chose not to do it because in seminary they... You
- 7:37Speaker 1: could contract for a grade. For an A, you would
- 7:41Speaker 1: do X amount of assignments. It was several. For a B,
- 7:43Speaker 1: you do this. For a C, you do that. And
- 7:46Speaker 1: so I figured, you know what? I'm going to see
- 7:47Speaker 1: my way out of this class because I got a wife.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I got a family. I got a full-time job. It
- 7:52Speaker 1: ain't happening. One of the A assignments was this. to
- 7:57Speaker 1: memorize the book of Philippians or to memorize the book
- 8:00Speaker 1: of Colossians. That seems like a lot. Yes, it was.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And aside from that, you had multiple writing assignments to
- 8:07Speaker 1: get an A. But these men, they memorized the Torah.
- 8:11Speaker 1: They knew biblical history. They were filled with a lot
- 8:18Speaker 1: of knowledge. Well, their heads were. They knew the prophets
- 8:23Speaker 1: and they still got it wrong. In other words, you
- 8:25Speaker 1: could be seminary trained and still be a fool. You know,
- 8:31Speaker 1: be an educated fool for that matter, or be a
- 8:33Speaker 1: fool on your way to hell. These religious men knew.
- 8:39Speaker 1: In other words, it's like someone who knows the word
- 8:41Speaker 1: of God, but doesn't know the God of the word. Yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 1: they knew the prophets and still got it wrong. They
- 8:48Speaker 1: mocked him with a sign over his head. King of
- 8:50Speaker 1: the Jews, not knowing that. they that they were reading
- 8:55Speaker 1: the truth really out loud and it's like how did
- 8:59Speaker 1: they miss it you know they've been you you have
- 9:01Speaker 1: memorized the torah but the torah never changed the word
- 9:06Speaker 1: of god that is never changed if you will their
- 9:09Speaker 1: lives it's like someone who says i've read the bible
- 9:12Speaker 1: from genesis all the way to revelation but they don't
- 9:16Speaker 1: know god So they even said to him, come down
- 9:20Speaker 1: and we will believe, not knowing they were describing the
- 9:24Speaker 1: very power he was choosing not to use. Isaiah said
- 9:29Speaker 1: it well, and they missed this as well. Isaiah said
- 9:33Speaker 1: it a thousand years earlier. He was despised and rejected.
- 9:38Speaker 1: A man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. So in a nutshell,
- 9:45Speaker 1: God told them he was coming. But ignorance is not
- 9:50Speaker 1: an excuse. Not for them and not for us. The
- 9:55Speaker 1: question is not whether you have enough information about Jesus.
- 9:59Speaker 1: The question is what are you doing with what you
- 10:02Speaker 1: already know about him why did he suffer in the
- 10:06Speaker 1: first place he chose the cup of suffering in Gethsemane
- 10:11Speaker 1: when he said not my will but thine be done.
- 10:15Speaker 1: He became a sin offering for us. 2 Corinthians 5, 21.
- 10:20Speaker 1: He suffered for the soldiers who beat him. He suffered
- 10:23Speaker 1: for the crowd that rejected him. He suffered for the
- 10:26Speaker 1: priests that mocked him. Selfish service saves no one, but
- 10:32Speaker 1: a sacrificial ministry is a saving ministry. 1 Peter 2, 21.
- 10:39Speaker 1: So Jesus bears God's wrath through his suffering. But then
- 10:46Speaker 1: he bears God's wrath through his separation. Through his separation.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So notice there are two things there, darkness and desertion.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Verse 33, darkness. So first of all, he felt what
- 11:03Speaker 1: we fear while the Father turned away from him. Jesus
- 11:08Speaker 1: has been on the cross for three hours, from noon
- 11:11Speaker 1: until three o'clock. And darkness covers the land. Now, this
- 11:15Speaker 1: was not some kind of eclipse. It wasn't some kind
- 11:18Speaker 1: of weather issue or anything like that. It wasn't a
- 11:23Speaker 1: cloudy day. It wasn't like that. This darkness is God's
- 11:27Speaker 1: judgment creation itself. literally responded to the withdrawal of the father.
- 11:36Speaker 1: The prophets saw it coming, Amos 8 and 9, and
- 11:38Speaker 1: Wisby said, the darkness of Calvary announced that the Lamb
- 11:44Speaker 1: of God was giving his life for the sins of
- 11:48Speaker 1: the whole world. And I honestly believe, I could be wrong,
- 11:54Speaker 1: Don't quote me on this, but I believe the darkness
- 11:57Speaker 1: that we're seeing in this nation today, quite possibly, let
- 12:00Speaker 1: me say that to stay safe, quite possibly the darkness
- 12:04Speaker 1: that we're seeing in this nation today is God's judgment
- 12:07Speaker 1: against a sinful nation. So it was dark, darkness, but
- 12:13Speaker 1: then desertion. Desertion, verse 34, Jesus cries, my God, my God,
- 12:21Speaker 1: why have you forsaken me? It reveals the profound loneliness
- 12:26Speaker 1: as he bore the sins of the whole world. Of
- 12:31Speaker 1: everything Jesus said from the cross, and this is one
- 12:35Speaker 1: of the seven sayings from the cross, right? This one
- 12:38Speaker 1: is the hardest. My God, my God, why have you
- 12:41Speaker 1: forsaken me? Notice what he did not say. He did
- 12:44Speaker 1: not say, Father. He did not say, Abba, Father. He said,
- 12:50Speaker 1: my God, my God. Every other time in the Gospels,
- 12:53Speaker 1: he called God Abba, like daddy or papa. But not here,
- 12:59Speaker 1: because in the moment that intimacy between the father and
- 13:03Speaker 1: the son was gone. This was not just physical pain.
- 13:07Speaker 1: It was abandonment. The punishment that belonged to us. was
- 13:13Speaker 1: poured out on him. Our sins, past, present, and future.
- 13:18Speaker 1: We're talking about the sins of the whole world. And
- 13:22Speaker 1: so maybe you're in a season where you feel like
- 13:24Speaker 1: nobody sees you and God seems to be distant from you.
- 13:30Speaker 1: And here's what the cross settles for you and I.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Jesus went into darkness, into the darkness of abandonment. so
- 13:39Speaker 1: that we can never have to live there permanently. He
- 13:43Speaker 1: took the forsakenness so that, so you could have the promise.
- 13:50Speaker 1: And what's the promise? Lo, I'm with you always, even
- 13:55Speaker 1: until the end of the age, Matthew 28, 20. Not sometimes,
- 14:02Speaker 1: not when he feels like it. He never goes on vacation.
- 14:06Speaker 1: But God is always with us, even in our darkest moments.
- 14:14Speaker 1: So he bears God's wrath in his separation. There's a
- 14:18Speaker 1: whole lot more there. Trust me, I'm cutting out. I'm
- 14:20Speaker 1: cutting out. I'm cutting out. I got to cut across
- 14:22Speaker 1: the field. But finally, Jesus bears God's wrath to accomplish
- 14:29Speaker 1: his salvation. To accomplish his salvation. He opened what we
- 14:34Speaker 1: could not. And even a sinner saw it. So two things.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Number one, a curtain was split. Number two, a confession
- 14:43Speaker 1: was spoken. So in verse 38, curtain was split, split.
- 14:49Speaker 1: The temple curtain tore from top to bottom. The curtain
- 14:53Speaker 1: was not, it wasn't there in the temple as decoration.
- 14:57Speaker 1: It was there to separate ordinary people from the presence
- 15:00Speaker 1: of God. Um, And when it tore, the barrier was gone.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And God noticed God tore it, not from the bottom up,
- 15:11Speaker 1: from the top down, meaning God came down to us.
- 15:16Speaker 1: He did for us, thank you, Holy Spirit, what we
- 15:19Speaker 1: could not do for ourselves. We no longer need a
- 15:23Speaker 1: human priest, high priest that is. But Jesus now is
- 15:28Speaker 1: our high priest, Hebrews 4, 14 through 16. And Jesus
- 15:33Speaker 1: tells us in John 14, 6, I am the way,
- 15:35Speaker 1: the truth, and the life. No man comes to the
- 15:38Speaker 1: Father but by me. So the curtain was split. But then,
- 15:46Speaker 1: as it relates to his salvation, because let me flesh
- 15:50Speaker 1: that out a little bit more. I don't want to
- 15:52Speaker 1: leave that right there because you've got to understand the
- 15:55Speaker 1: significance of the curtain being split. So before, people were
- 16:00Speaker 1: separated from the holy place and the holy of holies.
- 16:04Speaker 1: The curtain separated them. But now that the curtain, the
- 16:09Speaker 1: curtain was a barrier. So now that that barrier has
- 16:12Speaker 1: been removed, In other words, people have direct access to
- 16:17Speaker 1: God by way of the death of Jesus Christ on
- 16:21Speaker 1: the cross. So in other words, the sin was the
- 16:25Speaker 1: barrier between man and God. But that barrier is gone.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Because Christ died on the cross. And if we trust
- 16:35Speaker 1: Christ as our personal savior, we no longer have that
- 16:39Speaker 1: penalty of sin. Remember, I said earlier, he said he
- 16:42Speaker 1: he died for our sins past, present and future. So
- 16:47Speaker 1: salvation is in three tenses. It's in the past tense.
- 16:52Speaker 1: That's the penalty of sin. It's in the present tense,
- 16:56Speaker 1: that's the power that sin could have over our lives.
- 17:00Speaker 1: And then it's also in the future tense, one day
- 17:03Speaker 1: we're going to be saved from the very presence of sin. Christ,
- 17:07Speaker 1: when he died, He set us free from the penalty
- 17:11Speaker 1: of sin. So no longer do we have to worry
- 17:14Speaker 1: about that. That barrier is gone. Right now, he's saving
- 17:19Speaker 1: us from the very power that sin can have over
- 17:21Speaker 1: our lives. How is he doing that? Because we have
- 17:25Speaker 1: the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit who helps us
- 17:28Speaker 1: to overcome sin, who helps us to resist sin. And
- 17:34Speaker 1: then one day... maranatha i can't wait till he comes
- 17:38Speaker 1: back one day he's gonna save us from the very
- 17:41Speaker 1: presence of sin so so the curtain was split and
- 17:46Speaker 1: then finally here it is probably well all of this
- 17:50Speaker 1: is important but this this piece right here is extremely
- 17:53Speaker 1: important a confession was spoken in verse 39 a pagan
- 17:58Speaker 1: centurion's declaration When this centurion soldier, this Roman soldier, an outsider,
- 18:06Speaker 1: a man who has watched many other men die, but
- 18:09Speaker 1: he ain't never seen nothing like this, looked up and said, truly,
- 18:14Speaker 1: this man was God's son. Now, it wasn't a disciple
- 18:19Speaker 1: that said it. It wasn't one of those high priests
- 18:23Speaker 1: who memorized the Torah. It came out from the least
- 18:28Speaker 1: expected person in that crowd. He may not have understood
- 18:33Speaker 1: everything that he said. I don't know. I have no idea. Scholars,
- 18:36Speaker 1: they debate this. I see some scholars are saying, well,
- 18:39Speaker 1: this centurion evidently he confessed Christ, evidently he's saved. And
- 18:44Speaker 1: then others say, well, now maybe he was making a
- 18:46Speaker 1: sarcastic remark. Let me say it this way. We're going
- 18:49Speaker 1: to understand it better by and by. Let's just settle
- 18:51Speaker 1: that argument. We'll understand it better by and by. When
- 18:54Speaker 1: you get to heaven, you can just ask the Lord
- 18:56Speaker 1: whether or not. But that's not the most important thing here.
- 18:59Speaker 1: The most important thing is the fact that this is
- 19:02Speaker 1: what Mark's book emphasizes that Christ is the Son of God. Now,
- 19:12Speaker 1: What Romans 10, 9 tells us is this, that, and
- 19:18Speaker 1: this is the truth, when anyone confesses Jesus Christ as Lord,
- 19:24Speaker 1: they are saved. If you confess the Lord, Lord Jesus,
- 19:29Speaker 1: and believe in your heart that God raised him from
- 19:31Speaker 1: the dead, thou shalt be saved, Romans 10, 9. So,
- 19:37Speaker 1: in a nutshell, Again, as I close this out and
- 19:40Speaker 1: cut across the field, I don't want to give you
- 19:42Speaker 1: too much. I want you to still do your work. Right.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Mark opens his gospel with the beginning of the good
- 19:48Speaker 1: news of Jesus Christ. the son of god he starts
- 19:52Speaker 1: there and notice how he's coming back to it again
- 19:55Speaker 1: we see it at his at his baptism god said
- 19:58Speaker 1: it at his transfiguration god said it the demons knew
- 20:03Speaker 1: it and trembled but the first human human being to
- 20:08Speaker 1: say it after, at the cross that is, when Christ
- 20:13Speaker 1: died was a soldier who had no business saying it.
- 20:17Speaker 1: The priests, they ain't say it. They missed it. The people,
- 20:22Speaker 1: they missed it. The Roman soldiers missed it. But this
- 20:25Speaker 1: one individual right here, this centurion soldier, he didn't miss it.
- 20:30Speaker 1: He knew something evidently. about the son of god so
- 20:36Speaker 1: the movement of the passage is simple if you're trying
- 20:38Speaker 1: to figure it out trying to work through this passage
- 20:42Speaker 1: trying to wrestle with it it starts with a rejection
- 20:46Speaker 1: if you're looking for the themes so the first piece
- 20:49Speaker 1: that i dealt with it's really talking about rejection the
- 20:52Speaker 1: second piece second point here as it relates to Jesus
- 20:57Speaker 1: bearing God's wrath in his separation, that's talking about withdrawal.
- 21:04Speaker 1: And then the final piece, it should be very obvious,
- 21:07Speaker 1: one word is confession. It's a confession. And so they
- 21:12Speaker 1: rejected him while he was dying for them. The father
- 21:16Speaker 1: withdrew from him while he carried our sin. And a
- 21:20Speaker 1: soldier looked up and got it right. So Jesus took
- 21:26Speaker 1: what we deserved. Jesus felt what we fear. He opened
- 21:30Speaker 1: what we could not. He did something again that we
- 21:34Speaker 1: could not do for ourselves. We could not save ourselves.
- 21:37Speaker 1: We could not make ourselves acceptable before God. So the
- 21:40Speaker 1: question is not about them anymore. The question is about us.
- 21:45Speaker 1: It's about you. Are you rejecting him? Are you withdrawing
- 21:49Speaker 1: close enough to know him but not close enough to
- 21:52Speaker 1: follow him? Are you ready to confess him? Not just
- 21:56Speaker 1: with your mouth, but with your heart. Believe in your heart.
- 22:00Speaker 1: The door is open. The work is finished. What choice
- 22:05Speaker 1: are you going to make about Jesus? It's kind of
- 22:10Speaker 1: like what Pilate said. What am I going to do?
- 22:14Speaker 1: Remember what Pilate said? What am I going to do
- 22:16Speaker 1: with this Jesus? Yeah. What are you going to do
- 22:19Speaker 1: with Jesus? You got a choice. Are you going to
- 22:22Speaker 1: reject him? Are you going to withdraw from him? Are
- 22:26Speaker 1: you going to confess him as Lord and Savior and
- 22:29Speaker 1: be saved for all eternity? Praise the Lord. Amen. That's
- 22:34Speaker 1: a lesson summary, y'all. That's it. If you have any questions,
- 22:37Speaker 1: any concerns for me, let me know. I'm here for you.
- 22:40Speaker 1: I hope to see you soon, Lord willing.
