- 0:00We're back at Token 2049 for
- 0:01another lovely conversation.
- 0:04Now I'm joined by Nick from Lydian.
- 0:06Yeah, I mean, I always love chatting
- 0:08with fellow New Yorkers, so thank
- 0:09you for taking the time.
- 0:11Unfortunately, I had to be halfway
- 0:12around the world, but still
- 0:14nonetheless, very excited about this
- 0:15one. Thank you for joining us.
- 0:16Thank you having me.
- 0:16Yeah, not the most efficient
- 0:19way to get together, but
- 0:20I'm glad we made it happen.
- 0:22Exactly.
- 0:23And maybe start for those who don't
- 0:24know, maybe talk a little about you,
- 0:26your background, Lydian, and then
- 0:27we'll dive into all the fun
- 0:29stablecoin cards,
- 0:30agentic payments, and just
- 0:32stablecoins in general.
- 0:33So my background
- 0:35has been in fintech
- 0:37really since I
- 0:39got out of university,
- 0:41went to work for a bank,
- 0:44covering financial institutions,
- 0:47fintec firms.
- 0:48From there, transitioned
- 0:50to more of an investing role was at
- 0:52a VC firm, investing
- 0:54mostly in fintech.
- 0:56And, you know, back when I
- 0:58started, crypto still
- 1:00existed within that kind of fintek
- 1:02category.
- 1:03So we invested in a number of
- 1:04fintech businesses, obviously,
- 1:06but also crypto and
- 1:08Web3 adjacent businesses.
- 1:12Through that was able to
- 1:14meet Carl, who's the CEO of
- 1:16Lydian.
- 1:17And, you know, after they
- 1:19got things off the ground,
- 1:20asked me to join the
- 1:22team and I thought the opportunity
- 1:24and idea was super compelling.
- 1:27So that's where we are today.
- 1:29Yeah, well said.
- 1:31It's been interesting seeing fintech
- 1:33and crypto collide over time,
- 1:35even conversations around embedded
- 1:37finance, so on and so forth.
- 1:38Though that's not today's topic of
- 1:40conversation.
- 1:41It has been cool seeing that coming
- 1:43from New York City, where that's
- 1:45where all the fintex are.
- 1:47Maybe on the Lydian side
- 1:49of things, maybe get us
- 1:51up to speed on what's been going on
- 1:52with Lydion this year, and then we
- 1:54could go into that on a deeper
- 1:55level. Yeah.
- 1:57We've been really focused on
- 1:59the merchant
- 2:01relationship with
- 2:04stable coins and digital assets in
- 2:05general, because we
- 2:07see the payments ecosystem
- 2:10as a massive opportunity
- 2:12for stable coins and assets
- 2:14in the general.
- 2:15But I think the
- 2:18messy relationship between
- 2:19merchants, consumers,
- 2:21and the payments processors
- 2:24is one that requires
- 2:26a lot of work.
- 2:28And you don't want the merchant
- 2:29doing that work, right?
- 2:31So we kind of exist to
- 2:34bridge that gap and serve that
- 2:36role for our payments processor
- 2:37customers and the merchants
- 2:39that they service.
- 2:40Yeah, and maybe you could actually
- 2:41walk me through a bit of the
- 2:43inner work. I'm not going too deep
- 2:44in depth, but let's say I'm someone
- 2:46who has USDT and
- 2:48there's a merchant who I want to
- 2:50pay with a card and they
- 2:52want pesos maybe by the
- 2:54end of the day or near
- 2:55instantaneously.
- 2:56How does that work and what role
- 2:57does Lydian play in that?
- 2:58Yeah. So.
- 3:00You know kind of two sides of things
- 3:02one obviously the card and
- 3:04stablecoin linked cards
- 3:06as well as the direct
- 3:08merchant payments so
- 3:11on the card side you
- 3:14know you can obviously fund your
- 3:16card with stablecoins at
- 3:19the point of transaction those
- 3:21stablecoins are converted to fiat
- 3:23and usually to
- 3:25the acquirer.
- 3:27And then the acquirer disperses it
- 3:29on to their merchant base.
- 3:32Similar thing happens with the
- 3:34direct merchant
- 3:36payments.
- 3:37So you have USDT
- 3:39on your MetaMOS
- 3:41wallet, right?
- 3:42You want to use your Metamoss wallet
- 3:43to spend at a merchant.
- 3:45You go in, you scan,
- 3:48you connect that wallet, you
- 3:49complete the transaction.
- 3:52This is one thing that we do is
- 3:54you scan the transaction to make
- 3:55sure that it's not
- 3:57a bad actor or anything,
- 4:00undo like that.
- 4:02Two, once that transaction has
- 4:04been checked, we
- 4:06make sure that we've actually
- 4:07received the digital assets.
- 4:09Then you do the conversion piece,
- 4:10the fiat, and
- 4:12then you do this settlement to the
- 4:15acquirer.
- 4:16So, you know, similar process in
- 4:18both, but obviously
- 4:20different mediums of actually
- 4:22paying, one being a card and
- 4:23one being direct from your wallet.
- 4:25Definitely, and one
- 4:27of the more interesting things I
- 4:28learned recently was that obviously
- 4:30consumers are choosing to use stable
- 4:32coins and just Globally because
- 4:34maybe some people don't have access
- 4:35to high quality.
- 4:36Just fiat currencies or
- 4:39maybe some Yeah,
- 4:41maybe just there people want access
- 4:43to US dollars or
- 4:45US dollar denominated assets But
- 4:47the merchants themselves don't
- 4:49actually know that they're accepting
- 4:50stable coins via these card
- 4:52networks.
- 4:53So I guess from your perspective,
- 4:54I'd really love to hear it.
- 4:55Do you think that's a problem?
- 4:57Well, look, I think of digital
- 4:59assets as they become more and more
- 5:01mainstream as just
- 5:03another form of currency, right?
- 5:05At the end of the day, you and
- 5:07I have a
- 5:09U.S.
- 5:11Denominated bank, and
- 5:12we have U. S. Denomination cards,
- 5:14right.
- 5:15The beautiful thing about what
- 5:17the payments ecosystem does
- 5:21is make sure that the merchant
- 5:23doesn't need to worry about that,
- 5:24right, whether you're paying in
- 5:26dollars or euros or
- 5:28pesos or whatever it is, the
- 5:29merchant will still receive their
- 5:31fiat currency and all of that
- 5:33complexity is taken away from the
- 5:34merchant's hands.
- 5:37And that's the similar thing that
- 5:38we're trying to do with digital
- 5:40assets, right, is take that
- 5:41complexity away and
- 5:43make it as simple as
- 5:45anything else. So I don't view it
- 5:47as something they should be worried
- 5:49about or think about because
- 5:50Ultimately, I think of it as just
- 5:52another kind of current.
- 5:53Yeah. Well said.
- 5:55And on your client side, is there
- 5:56any curiosity to learn about digital
- 5:58assets or stable coins?
- 6:00Has that shifted based on where the
- 6:01market regime is? I just really want
- 6:02to get the inside perspective,
- 6:05given it's a...
- 6:06Yeah, very, very hot.
- 6:08Yeah. Well, look, when
- 6:10I first started working with Lydian,
- 6:13a lot of the work that we were doing
- 6:15was frankly educational,
- 6:18giving payments
- 6:20processors and acquirers
- 6:22kind of the lay of
- 6:24the land of what
- 6:26stablecoin ecosystem is,
- 6:28what it looks like, how it works,
- 6:31all of those sort of building block
- 6:33type um...
- 6:35Pieces.
- 6:36Nowadays, I would say that the
- 6:38familiarity and curiosity with it
- 6:40is significantly grown.
- 6:43There's not really that educational
- 6:46lag that you would have
- 6:47to teach
- 6:50a payment processor or merchant
- 6:52on.
- 6:53It's really changed a lot
- 6:55in the past two years, which is
- 6:56great.
- 6:57Yeah, and it's quite interesting
- 6:58because this isn't being led by
- 7:00a digital asset speculative boom,
- 7:02which is causing people to be
- 7:03curious.
- 7:04It's almost like crypto is becoming
- 7:06ubiquitous.
- 7:07My generation didn't really know a
- 7:09world without the internet.
- 7:11The generation after didn't know a
- 7:12real world without Bitcoin.
- 7:14Now this generation doesn't really a
- 7:15world about stable coins, which
- 7:16makes for just interesting
- 7:18conversations when you're working in
- 7:19the space full time or you're
- 7:21walking down the streets of New York
- 7:22and you hear some mumbles about USDC
- 7:24and all these other different
- 7:25things. Sound.
- 7:26Yeah, I just wanted to throw that in
- 7:28anecdotally, but I'm curious on your
- 7:29side, when you think about the
- 7:31merchant acquirers versus the
- 7:33payment services providers, what are
- 7:35those conversations like on your end
- 7:37and maybe what are the similarities
- 7:38and differences there?
- 7:39Yeah, so
- 7:42We we frankly think
- 7:44of them as as the same
- 7:46sort of conversation
- 7:50Ultimately, right the
- 7:52role that we're trying to play is
- 7:54Giving merchants the ability to
- 7:56accept digital assets and receive
- 7:58fiat settlement at the end of the
- 8:00day, right?
- 8:02Now there are nuances in
- 8:04what the reporting looks like, what
- 8:06the settlement
- 8:08flow will look like.
- 8:10But at the end of the day,
- 8:13whether you're a PSP, an acquirer,
- 8:15or anyone else, you just want to
- 8:16know that, okay, if I
- 8:18accept and turn this on,
- 8:21will I have fiat currency
- 8:23and the currency that I choose
- 8:25coming to my bank account
- 8:27every day or every other day,
- 8:28whatever it is.
- 8:30So we always try to frame the
- 8:32conversations around that.
- 8:33That's our role,
- 8:35that's what we try to do, and so
- 8:37the settlement flows and other
- 8:39aspects might be different, but that
- 8:41ultimately always stays
- 8:43constant in our conversations.
- 8:45Make sense.
- 8:46And if you had to put maybe like a
- 8:48top one or two FAQs that you
- 8:50typically get during the early
- 8:51stages, what are those?
- 8:53Yeah Well,
- 8:55I would say that
- 8:57one what type of digital assets
- 8:59do you support right?
- 9:01That's a big one Yeah, what
- 9:03type and networks can you support?
- 9:06And Ultimately, what types
- 9:08of wallets can you supports?
- 9:10Because Again,
- 9:13I think when you first get
- 9:15into this space you see it as
- 9:17you know, a one-size-fits-all
- 9:20type products.
- 9:23I'm going to turn on digital assets,
- 9:25so, you know, I'm gonna turn on
- 9:26every digital asset that exists out
- 9:28there or every wallet that exists
- 9:29our there.
- 9:31But what we usually spend
- 9:33the initial time with our
- 9:35customers working through is what
- 9:37type of assets do they want to
- 9:39support? What type of networks do
- 9:40they wanna support?
- 9:41What type wallets
- 9:43do they wana support?
- 9:44And then all of the other good
- 9:46stuff comes, but those are usually
- 9:47the initial questions that we deal
- 9:49with. Yeah, well since we're on the
- 9:50topic, what digital assets and
- 9:52networks does Lydian support?
- 9:54Yeah, so in terms of coverage
- 9:56these days, we like to say
- 9:58to all of our customers, we support
- 10:00the most widely
- 10:02used networks and
- 10:04tokens. So think of the top 25
- 10:06most widely traded
- 10:09tokens and top
- 10:1125, most widely use networks.
- 10:14And those we support, obviously,
- 10:16when you look at the actual volume
- 10:18data, right?
- 10:19Those skew towards
- 10:21the USETs of the world.
- 10:24But we want to
- 10:26support everything so that our
- 10:29merchants and our acquirers can make
- 10:31the decision.
- 10:33If there's ever a
- 10:35digital asset that we don't support
- 10:37that our
- 10:39customers specifically want,
- 10:41then we're able to do that pretty
- 10:43quickly.
- 10:44Nice. And how often do those types
- 10:45of conversations come up, people
- 10:47wanting maybe more so
- 10:49obscure assets to the outsider in
- 10:51the industry?
- 10:52I would say it's more region and
- 10:54country specific, right?
- 10:57For example, there's certain
- 10:59stable coins
- 11:01that are pegged obviously to the
- 11:03local country's
- 11:05currency.
- 11:07Now the network that they use is
- 11:08usually one that we already support,
- 11:11but just supporting
- 11:12that currency or that token as
- 11:14well is the most common
- 11:17request that we get.
- 11:18Okay.
- 11:19That makes sense, and I guess I'm
- 11:21so close to it and been doing it
- 11:23for so long. I've been banging my
- 11:24head against the wall, trying to go
- 11:25from here to there for so along.
- 11:27When people do want to go back and
- 11:29forth between these networks,
- 11:31what is that chain abstract
- 11:32experience like on Lydian?
- 11:34I mean, look, in general, I would
- 11:35say that we
- 11:38offer people
- 11:40the ability to customize
- 11:42and extrapolate
- 11:44out from our existing
- 11:46tech stack
- 11:48and our tech capability
- 11:50as much as possible.
- 11:52But I always like to center it
- 11:54in realism because
- 11:56there are certain tokens and
- 11:58certain networks that are outside
- 12:00the norm that people want us to
- 12:02suggest us to use or support,
- 12:05and I always drive it back to
- 12:07utility.
- 12:08At the end of the day,
- 12:10from the data that we're seeing and
- 12:11the volume that we are seeing,
- 12:13the majority of transactions happen
- 12:16on a number of very
- 12:18specific tokens and very specific
- 12:20networks, and so we
- 12:23can do that for you, but
- 12:25ultimately we want to drive
- 12:27volume for the merchants at
- 12:29the end the day.
- 12:31Sometimes giving too much choice
- 12:34is a
- 12:37bad thing for the consumer.
- 12:38We want to keep things simple to
- 12:39what they know and what they're used
- 12:40to.
- 12:41Definitely. Well said.
- 12:43And you touched on the point about
- 12:44being a lot of these queries being
- 12:46regional and country specific.
- 12:48Where has Lydian seen the most
- 12:50growth in the past year.
- 12:52Maybe if you could compare this
- 12:54between like emerging markets versus
- 12:56developing. We'd really keen to hear
- 12:57your perspective.
- 12:58Obviously, we're based in the US and
- 13:00so we have a presence there and
- 13:02we have growth there.
- 13:04I think this past year in
- 13:062026, we've really
- 13:08seen a lot of growth in
- 13:10Southeast Asia and
- 13:12some of the markets in
- 13:14and around Singapore, which
- 13:16has been super exciting for us.
- 13:17So that's definitely one region
- 13:20which we're trying to spend more
- 13:21time and
- 13:23put more resources behind because
- 13:25it's an exciting...
- 13:26Opportunity for us in a very
- 13:28exciting market as well.
- 13:29Can you speak to the growth
- 13:31prospects of who are the people in
- 13:32the Southeast Asian region who are
- 13:34actually coming forth and very
- 13:36curious about what Lydian does?
- 13:37Yeah, so...
- 13:38I would say that it
- 13:40all comes from a regulatory
- 13:41standpoint, so the regulatory
- 13:44environment in Southeast Asia has
- 13:46matured a lot in
- 13:47countries like the Philippines,
- 13:49Thailand, Indonesia,
- 13:52and taking advantage
- 13:54of those regulatory tailwinds
- 13:56to engage
- 13:58with PSPs and acquirers
- 14:00in those markets specifically
- 14:02has been super exciting for us.
- 14:05Yeah, make sense make sense and
- 14:07now to move the conversation along I
- 14:09kind of want to talk about the
- 14:10stable coin card Aspect of
- 14:12things. Yeah, because I
- 14:14mean scoped cards versus
- 14:16pure stable coin agentic
- 14:18payments like Where do you see
- 14:20the world going here?
- 14:21Because I mean I spoke to one of
- 14:23the larger card providers and I was
- 14:25a bit shocked to say oh He said
- 14:26scope cards. This is the way I think
- 14:28we should be doing things like oh
- 14:29really why I just assumed my
- 14:32maybe naive crypto nativeness
- 14:33thought, oh, just like what?
- 14:34Just send the stable coins, man.
- 14:35It's easy. Just put the stablecoins
- 14:36in the wallet, bro.
- 14:38Yeah.
- 14:39But clearly that's not the case.
- 14:41I mean, look, there's a number of
- 14:42different players doing different
- 14:46things.
- 14:47We have our
- 14:49own, you
- 14:51know, Visa branded
- 14:53stablecoin links, go cards,
- 14:57which for the products
- 14:58that we're launching and the
- 15:00partnerships that we have, it
- 15:02makes most sense because it's
- 15:04very simple and easy
- 15:06to build out and easy to ramp,
- 15:08so.
- 15:09I wouldn't say that I have
- 15:12a super well-informed
- 15:14opinion or super,
- 15:16yeah,
- 15:18specific point of view on it, other
- 15:19than we
- 15:21like the way that we're doing it
- 15:22because it fits for our purposes.
- 15:26But ultimately,
- 15:28I think it's great for the ecosystem
- 15:30because choice,
- 15:32innovation throughout every
- 15:34product category matters.
- 15:37And...
- 15:38That is what I want most for
- 15:40this card industry and
- 15:42stablecoin card industry as well.
- 15:44Very eloquently stated and
- 15:47when you think about the nexus of
- 15:48we'll say something like AI
- 15:50and stable point payments
- 15:52What's the current landscape right
- 15:54now? If you could get me up to speed
- 15:55and then where do you see things
- 15:56going?
- 15:57Frankly, for this conversation,
- 16:00I probably can't do a good job of
- 16:02giving you a good sense of the
- 16:04stablecoin landscapes
- 16:06that relates to agentic payments.
- 16:09What I would say though is
- 16:11one thing that we're very
- 16:13focused on at Lydian is
- 16:16how that
- 16:18agent interacts with the end
- 16:20merchant. Hmm.
- 16:21And...
- 16:22One thing that we've done from a
- 16:24distribution standpoint is really
- 16:25try to embed ourselves within
- 16:27like I've been
- 16:29talking about, the PSPs, the
- 16:31acquirers, the folks who actually
- 16:33hold the merchant relationship and
- 16:35control what
- 16:38type of forms
- 16:40of payment they can accept.
- 16:42And so I think being positioned
- 16:44there is a good spot
- 16:46for us to be in because ultimately
- 16:49Whichever
- 16:52form of agentic payments wins
- 16:54or you know proliferates
- 16:56whether that stable coin or
- 16:58related or otherwise we
- 17:00should have some part to play in
- 17:02that so yes that's
- 17:04my general thinking I know it wasn't
- 17:06the most helpful for you, but uh...
- 17:08Yo, it was a good answer, I
- 17:09appreciate it.
- 17:10Look, it's one of those things, I'm
- 17:11very curious, and a wise man
- 17:14has, sorry, a fool has
- 17:15more questions than a wise has
- 17:17answers, so happy
- 17:19to look foolish, man.
- 17:20It's all good.
- 17:21Fair enough.
- 17:22But, when a.
- 17:24You think about where Lydian fits in
- 17:25overall, is it more so, do you see
- 17:27these are more manual, maybe there's
- 17:29a bit of AI, and then you're
- 17:31solving that last mile problem
- 17:33to the merchant?
- 17:34Or can we walk me through just
- 17:36overall, maybe that, more
- 17:37like from a workflow perspective,
- 17:39how that would work.
- 17:40I think, look, at the end of the
- 17:41day, whatever the
- 17:43front end looks like,
- 17:45whether that's in the form of
- 17:46agents, whether it's a POS device,
- 17:48whether a checkout page,
- 17:52merchants want to be sure that
- 17:54an individual has good funds,
- 17:57basically, that they have the money
- 17:59to pay for whatever it is they're
- 18:00trying to buy.
- 18:01And if you can
- 18:04solve that problem for them.
- 18:06While also delivering those
- 18:08funds to them in a timely manner,
- 18:10you're in a good spot.
- 18:12So yeah, I like to think of us as
- 18:14that kind of
- 18:16infrastructure and
- 18:18last mile layer.
- 18:20And whatever form that front end
- 18:22takes
- 18:24is less relevant to
- 18:26us and
- 18:28something that we can be
- 18:30flexible around.
- 18:31No, it makes complete sense.
- 18:32I mean, like we almost started the
- 18:34conversation with, those
- 18:35high-quality either
- 18:37dollar-denominated assets or those
- 18:38local currencies are what people
- 18:39want. If you could help them expand
- 18:41their reach or get access to
- 18:43products and services they would not
- 18:44get otherwise, it's a no-brainer,
- 18:46it make everybody happy,
- 18:48and yeah, it's almost where the
- 18:49future's at.
- 18:50Look, we always like to say there's
- 18:52trillions of dollars of digital
- 18:53assets that exist in the world
- 18:55today, right?
- 18:56We're just trying to give merchants
- 18:57the ability to see those
- 18:59dollars and see those funds.
- 19:03Obviously, there's multiple ways to
- 19:05tackle it. But the more ways a
- 19:07merchant has to receive
- 19:09money for the goods they're selling,
- 19:11the better it is for the merchant.
- 19:13And that's what we're really trying
- 19:14to do.
- 19:15Makes sense. Nick, I know you're a
- 19:16very busy man.
- 19:17I don't want to take up too much
- 19:18more of your time, but really,
- 19:20really grateful for you sitting down
- 19:21and chatting with the block today.
- 19:22No, super happy to have done it.
- 19:25Really enjoyed your questions and
- 19:26the conversation.
- 19:27So thanks so much for having me.
- 19:29We'll do.
- 19:29We'll try to keep it local and who
- 19:31knows maybe we'll actually hang out
- 19:32and kick it. Appreciate it, man
- 19:35Cheers, take care
