- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host Anna McGivern for October 22nd.
- 0:12Today is National Make a Dog's Day Day, a heartwarming
- 0:16observance that celebrates man's best friend and encourages us to
- 0:20do something special for the dogs in our lives.
- 0:23Rated by animal behaviorist and best selling author Colin Page
- 0:27in 2008, This day is all about giving back to the animals that
- 0:31give us so much unconditional love every single day.
- 0:36The holiday isn't just about pampering your own pet, but
- 0:39that's perfectly fine. It's also about recognizing
- 0:43shelter dogs, rescue dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, and
- 0:46all the working dogs to make our lives better and safer.
- 0:50Paige created this day to bring awareness to the number of dogs
- 0:54waiting in shelters and rescues for their forever homes, while
- 0:59also celebrating the incredible bond between humans and dogs.
- 1:04What makes National Make a Dog's Day Day special is its simple
- 1:09premise. Dogs enrich our lives
- 1:12immeasurably, and today we're reminded to return that favor.
- 1:17Whether through extra treats, longer walks, new toys, or
- 1:20simply more quality time and attention, this day asks us to
- 1:25show our appreciation for these faithful companions.
- 1:29Which brings us to today's quote from American journalist Gene
- 1:32Hill, who once said, Whoever said you can't buy happiness
- 1:39forgot about puppies? Hill's playful observation gets
- 1:44at something deeper about our relationship with dogs.
- 1:47While technically you can buy a puppy, what you're really
- 1:51receiving is immeasurable and priceless.
- 1:54Companionship, loyalty, joy, and yes, the kind of happiness that
- 1:59money alone could never purchase.
- 2:02Think about what dogs bring into our lives beyond their physical
- 2:05presence. They give us purpose and
- 2:08routine. Someone depending on us to show
- 2:11up, to care, to be responsible. They give us unconditional
- 2:15acceptance on our worst days. They teach us to be present, to
- 2:20find joy in simple things like walks and play time.
- 2:24They connect us with other people through the universal
- 2:28language of Dog Person. It'll understood that while the
- 2:33transaction might involve money, what you're really acquiring is
- 2:38a relationship that will teach you about love, loss, loyalty
- 2:43and living in the moment. The happiness dogs bring isn't
- 2:47just something that can be bought, it emerges from the bond
- 2:51you build together over time. National Make a Dog's Day day
- 2:57celebrates this truth that while we may have bought or adopted
- 3:03our dogs, they've given us gifts far more valuable than anything
- 3:07we pay. The day is about recognizing
- 3:10that disparity and trying even just a little balance the
- 3:15scales. Our dog is a rescue dog from
- 3:19Texas, but she's 100% Canadian now.
- 3:24We've had her for several years and she is an awesome addition
- 3:27to the family. It was a strange process though
- 3:30picking her up because COVID restrictions were still in place
- 3:34so we couldn't cross the border. I had to drive to 0 Avenue which
- 3:39is right on the Canada US border and the van that drove the dogs
- 3:43up from Texas pulled up into the parking lot across this field
- 3:48and a man walked across the field carrying a couple dogs at
- 3:51a time. He called out the dog's name and
- 3:53the new owner went and grabbed their new puppy.
- 3:56When he called Pepper's name, I walked up to the 49th parallel
- 4:02and while keeping my feet on Canadian soil, I reached into
- 4:06the United States and took this cute little puppy and her
- 4:10paperwork into my arms. I was thinking, can you actually
- 4:15do this? Then I had to take Pepper over
- 4:18to customs and declare the dog, and they treated this as a
- 4:22completely normal situation. So I guess you can just hand an
- 4:28animal across the border. So today, embrace the spirit of
- 4:32National Make a Dog's Day and Gene Hill's playful wisdom.
- 4:37If you have a dog, do something special for them today.
- 4:41An extra long walk, a new toy, their favorite treat, or just
- 4:46quality time without distractions.
- 4:49Show them the same joy they show you every single day.
- 4:54If you don't have a dog, consider volunteering at a local
- 4:57shelter, donating to a rescue organization, or, if you're
- 5:01ready for the commitment, visiting a shelter to meet the
- 5:05dogs waiting for their forever homes.
- 5:09Maybe you'll find your own happiness waiting in a kennel.
- 5:13Remember Hill's insight? While you can't actually buy
- 5:16happiness, you can open your heart to a dog who will teach
- 5:21you what happiness really means. That's it for today.
- 5:26I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 5:32tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 5:39with another daily quote.
