- 0:15You can thank us later for sounding smarter than those finance bros you need to know, Patti.
- 0:20I really miss you.
- 0:21I know.
- 0:22Oh my god, I came into the studio this morning and I've got this beautiful big mirror that
- 0:27you put in there when you left and I was like, taking selfies and I said, it's not the
- 0:32same.
- 0:33I really do.
- 0:34I do think like it's, you know, it just makes the heart graph on her.
- 0:42So many people are like, so do you infect love to either?
- 0:44I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 0:48I pitched that and she wasn't keen.
- 0:51We actually would have nothing to talk about.
- 0:52No.
- 0:53It's like when couples go to dinner but they've lived together.
- 0:55It's like, what do they talk about?
- 0:56I know.
- 0:57And then you know, when you play guests, they're like, what's the relationship status and
- 1:01you see people on their phone, you're like, oh, so sad.
- 1:03And it's like, is it?
- 1:05What did they just say?
- 1:07Is it?
- 1:08And they just enjoy not talking, you know?
- 1:09They play happy.
- 1:10They just having a bit of a break from conversation.
- 1:12Yeah.
- 1:13Oh my god.
- 1:14And you've had a huge like couple of weeks.
- 1:16Oh, it's been a week.
- 1:18The markets are giving me absolute whiplash.
- 1:21But then also my poor little dog, Miso, had to get hospitalized, which was pretty scary.
- 1:29I just got so frustrated that the vets were like, she was sick like a week ago and took
- 1:34her into the vet.
- 1:35And they were like, oh, just, they just sent her home and they're like, just watch
- 1:36her for 24 hours.
- 1:37It's okay.
- 1:38She eats worse, bring her back.
- 1:39I was like, okay, she's getting worse, bought her back.
- 1:40And then they sent me home again.
- 1:41And then like, this is the third time and I was just like, can you guys just fix her?
- 1:46Like honestly, stop sending your home and me having to watch her and me feeling guilty
- 1:50because she's in so much pain.
- 1:51But yes, she's back home.
- 1:52She's fine now.
- 1:54Thank goodness.
- 1:55This, the photo you sent me, well, when you were saying like she hasn't eaten for four
- 1:59or five days, I was like, oh my god, Miso is going to die.
- 2:03Like, this is not good.
- 2:05Which in dog ears, they're not eating for a week is like three months.
- 2:10Like being on survivor or something.
- 2:12Yeah.
- 2:13I mean, we did say she was a little bit podgy when we got back from New Zealand.
- 2:16Maybe she heard us and was like, right, oh my god.
- 2:21I wouldn't say she's like a live and kicking like she's alive.
- 2:24She's getting energy back.
- 2:26Um, and I would hope so after the amount of money that I spent.
- 2:33Honestly, this was only a couple of months ago for anyone that has not listened
- 2:36to the podcast like in a while.
- 2:38That was like really smug about her new pet insurance approach.
- 2:43Do you have pet insurance?
- 2:45No.
- 2:45Why would you not have insurance?
- 2:47Because I've kind of set up my own insurance fund.
- 2:49So I transfer money into a Miso fund that's building over time.
- 2:54So if anything happens, I will use that.
- 2:57But obviously the risk is tomorrow.
- 2:59She needs a back surgery.
- 3:00Look, if it had been a year later, I would have been absolutely fine.
- 3:05But the fact that it happened here, I guess, as soon as I implemented my new
- 3:11profound insurance strategy, how much were you putting in?
- 3:15Like, what was the account at?
- 3:16I was putting, the account was at 500 pounds and just kind of a, yeah.
- 3:22And I was like, okay, cool, emergency visit is like 150 pounds.
- 3:26So I was like, okay, cool.
- 3:27And then like some medication.
- 3:28Say what I didn't account for was two nights stay in hospital, which, yeah,
- 3:35is about 2000 pounds.
- 3:38I know.
- 3:39So I'm in the red.
- 3:41I've got to kind of build up that insurance policy fund thing again.
- 3:46But you know what, I kind of scrapped it.
- 3:48I scrapped it and I went, you know what?
- 3:50Sometimes you're not always right, Vic.
- 3:51And sometimes there's insurance in place for a reason.
- 3:54So yes.
- 3:56So you've got insurance now?
- 3:57I've got insurance now, yeah.
- 3:59I've had like two insurance blowouts for the last month.
- 4:03You have actually, wow, you're not really a great run.
- 4:06I feel like I just had a bit of a moment of my life where I just kind of live life
- 4:11on the edge, which really backfired.
- 4:13So I don't want to, I don't want to do that anymore.
- 4:17I want to be boring, steady, risk averse.
- 4:22But the thing is, you were in a position like you were messaging me
- 4:26like before she was out of hospital.
- 4:29And you hadn't had your third vet visit and you were like considering whether
- 4:34or not to wait for like the time or whatever, because there was another 300 pounds
- 4:39or something.
- 4:41And you were like, I wouldn't forget myself if she wasn't okay
- 4:44and I hadn't spent that money.
- 4:46And we were talking about how scary that would be if that was like a kid
- 4:52or a family member and you couldn't afford to choose the option
- 4:58that was going to keep them safe and healthy.
- 5:00Like it's, it's, it's, oh, it's being such a good reminder of,
- 5:06I don't even want to be in a position where the health of myself, my family,
- 5:09my parents, anyone that I love is in jeopardy because I can't afford to pay
- 5:15for the treatment they need.
- 5:16And that is why insurance is there is because, you know,
- 5:20so that you don't have to make those tough decisions.
- 5:23And so it's just, I'm just absolutely kicking myself that I have been,
- 5:31I've been like constantly being like, I need to get insurance,
- 5:33I need to get insurance, I just hadn't got around to it.
- 5:35And I'm like, Vic, that should have been a priority, you know,
- 5:37I like, sort your shit out of your head.
- 5:40Have you been thinking that?
- 5:42Oh, totally.
- 5:43But I thought you were quite happy with your,
- 5:45Oh, but that was only like for the last, what was it like a few months?
- 5:49Yeah, I think financially it feels shit to spend money on insurance,
- 5:52but you never know when this thing's going to happen.
- 5:54And obviously I didn't have enough money.
- 5:56My, my insurance strategy didn't play out how I wanted to because life
- 6:00doesn't play out how you want to.
- 6:02And me, so I got sick straight away.
- 6:04Whereas, you know, it's, you're just taking a gamble.
- 6:07And I think I've realized that's not a gamble that I want to take any more,
- 6:12like the stress as well, just so, so, so not worth it.
- 6:16But a positive, oh my god, what?
- 6:19When they gave her her medication, I was like, hey,
- 6:22this is made by Zoisus, which is a company I invest in.
- 6:26So I'm kind of winning in the sense that I invest in the company
- 6:32that I have to spend money on.
- 6:33So yeah, little silver lining.
- 6:35Did you get some dividends out or sell your stock for the medication?
- 6:40If it makes you feel better, I also had a financial mayor
- 6:42when I was in Australia last week.
- 6:44Oh, no.
- 6:45Yeah, I reckon this gets me every,
- 6:48often time I travel, I find it really.
- 6:52I'm just going to even like,
- 6:53as soon as I start talking to you, I'm going to be like,
- 6:55oh, I know what happened.
- 6:56Basically, I wasn't using my phone while I was over there.
- 7:01So I had it on airplane mode and I was just using Wi-Fi.
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:05And then for the weekend, I spent most of it in like Bondi
- 7:09and, you know, wasn't in Wi-Fi.
- 7:11So I took my phone off airplane mode and was like,
- 7:15oh, how much could roaming be for the day or two days?
- 7:19Well, I just assumed I'd get like a day charge,
- 7:23like $8 a day or something, $188 later,
- 7:30for like 80 million fucking bites or whatever of data.
- 7:36I kept getting these texts,
- 7:37being like, you've used your $10.
- 7:39We're adding another, but I just thought my phone
- 7:41was working out and sending that text to you.
- 7:43Yeah, because that happens.
- 7:45No, no.
- 7:46It was just sending you heaps of reminders
- 7:49that you've gone through your tiny amounts of data
- 7:51that they're charging you $10 for.
- 7:53So I had like 18 texts.
- 7:55Oh, my God.
- 7:57You're like, oh, my God, the glitch is really, really
- 8:00frustrating.
- 8:01Hahaha.
- 8:04Calling bug roaming, excuse me, like can you
- 8:06sort your shit out?
- 8:07I couldn't believe it.
- 8:08But usually it is though.
- 8:09It's like I know, a certain amount of day.
- 8:12Just the amount of times that I've had a blow out
- 8:14with like roaming and data, the only time someone
- 8:18will send me to prison as if I haven't paid my roaming bill.
- 8:21Like, it's just so.
- 8:23I've probably got one from like five years ago
- 8:25that sent to an old address or something, it's like.
- 8:28But I think listen, it's just sound Wi-Fi.
- 8:32Yes, but like I get lost.
- 8:33I'm not very good with directions.
- 8:35What am I meant to do?
- 8:35Like, you know, I meant to be meeting friends.
- 8:38Like it's not ideal.
- 8:39Honestly, I cannot believe in this day and age.
- 8:43There's not a fucking international phone.
- 8:45I know.
- 8:46Come on, Elon.
- 8:46What is going on?
- 8:48Like we all have phones.
- 8:49We all travel, yeah, it's been.
- 8:52It's like right for disruption.
- 8:53Maybe should we start a phone?
- 8:54Come maybe when we wrap up the curve.
- 8:57We can, uh, rival Elon Musk.
- 8:59We can start a telecommunications group.
- 9:02Yeah.
- 9:02Telecommunications and tax are the two things
- 9:06that need to get with the times in terms of people working
- 9:10and moving all around the world.
- 9:12Yes.
- 9:12Yes.
- 9:13Neither which really float my boat in terms of getting into.
- 9:18That's probably why they're the two left behind.
- 9:21Float my boat is like something we've got to bring back.
- 9:24That's such a good saying.
- 9:27Honestly, I would rather just keep chatting like this and not
- 9:32because I honestly feel like as soon as this podcast comes out,
- 9:38it will probably be all incorrect.
- 9:39And because we would have done a complete U-turn
- 9:42and the markets will be moving the other direction
- 9:46or Trump would have come out and said something else.
- 9:49Honestly, I did this entire prep sheet
- 9:52and I was like, oh, this is going to be a good one.
- 9:55Woke up the next morning and it's like, oh,
- 9:57tariffs are reversed.
- 9:59Markets are really strongly, everything's kind of back to normal
- 10:02when I was like, oh, I just wanted to punch him.
- 10:05In the day I was just like, thanks, Trump.
- 10:07I mean, there's people that lost millions of dollars
- 10:09and all I did was a prep sheet, but, you know, I think.
- 10:11I just was just like, honestly.
- 10:18It's been one of the worldest weeks we've had in history
- 10:21in the stock market.
- 10:22Really?
- 10:23But honestly, we haven't seen anything like this since 2008.
- 10:27So we are living history, girl.
- 10:30Oh my God, cool.
- 10:31We're making history.
- 10:32I mean, not you and me, but like Donald Trump is making history.
- 10:35We're living in it.
- 10:36So yes, the US stock market was up nearly 10% last week,
- 10:41which is, and it was about 9% in one day,
- 10:44which is crazy and we haven't seen that since 2008.
- 10:49So yeah, I feel like I'm getting whiplash, honestly.
- 10:53It was like, this is exactly why we say,
- 10:59try and kind of ignore what's going on,
- 11:01invest for the long term,
- 11:03invest consistently, regularly,
- 11:05or that sounds boring, but like, honestly,
- 11:08who would have picked that he was gonna come out on,
- 11:11was it Thursday morning, and be like, oh, just kidding.
- 11:15I'm gonna pause tariffs.
- 11:16Do you think this is gonna make people
- 11:18way more skeptical to invest in the stock market?
- 11:21Because what Trump's kind of doing is like,
- 11:24game of firing it in the sense that like,
- 11:27if markets can go up and down that quickly,
- 11:30everyone's just gonna think, well,
- 11:33the stock market is bullshit,
- 11:34all the stock market is, do you know what I mean?
- 11:36Like I think when it comes to the stock market,
- 11:39we've spent so much time trying to educate people
- 11:42that if you invest consistently in for the long haul
- 11:44and blah, blah, blah, it goes up to the right,
- 11:46but this is kind of unprecedented times,
- 11:51and like what's happening with the ups and downs inside,
- 11:54like it's kind of not doing anyone justice
- 11:57in the sense that like, everyone's probably just a bit,
- 12:00why would I bother the stock market
- 12:02so well over the show?
- 12:03I haven't heard that word unprecedented since like,
- 12:05the pandemic, but I guess what's new is I said
- 12:08that I thought, what an idea, should I use that one?
- 12:10No, you're right, it's everyone saying it's not
- 12:14the damage is not being done in the stock market,
- 12:16the damage is being done in the long-term impacts
- 12:19that this will have, this flip-flopping from Trump,
- 12:23that the damage that will have on the US
- 12:27as an investable stock market is gonna be way more lingering
- 12:31than people are talking about what the US economy
- 12:35is gonna be like, will it be stronger, will it be weaker,
- 12:38will the rest of the global countries
- 12:41combine forces and go against the US?
- 12:43Will it mean inflation, it's like,
- 12:45but yes, that's important, but there's also something else
- 12:49going on here, which is that the US stock market
- 12:52has been like a powerhouse, you know, it has been
- 12:55the biggest stock market, it's been the most consistent
- 12:58deliverer and with someone in power that's flopping
- 13:03and having these big gyrations of movements,
- 13:07it's becoming, you're right, it's becoming,
- 13:10wow, this is way too volatile for me.
- 13:13I'm gonna go and invest in a much more stable,
- 13:16steady economy in stock market, which might be Europe,
- 13:21it might be China, it might be Australia or New Zealand,
- 13:24you know, and there's gonna be impacts like that
- 13:26that linger for for a very, very long time.
- 13:30I think a lot of the conversations that are sending me
- 13:32into a bit of a tailspin are like not so much
- 13:36the stock market, like I mean, yes, the stock market done.
- 13:39It's more, I mean, like in the weekend,
- 13:43I was away with some friends, we went to Raglan
- 13:45and we were sitting at the wall,
- 13:47hitting fish and chips and one of my friends was like,
- 13:50we were talking about Trump and we were talking about
- 13:52politics and we admit this lovely Polish girl
- 13:55who was talking about, we were just like having
- 13:58a really interesting conversation about history
- 14:01and things that have happened and what we're seeing
- 14:03in the world and it was quite cool having someone
- 14:05from Europe taking part in the conversation
- 14:08one of my friends was like, I just ready to move to a farm
- 14:11and just delete all social media
- 14:13and have nothing to do with the world.
- 14:15I don't know, I think it's easy to spiral
- 14:17and start to like think worst case scenario
- 14:20but when you see stuff that is this unhinged,
- 14:23it's kind of like doesn't feel like in spheracy theories
- 14:26anymore, it feels kind of realistic.
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:31And you know, and the example that this girl was using
- 14:34with regards to the second world war
- 14:35because we were talking about like,
- 14:37what happened was because so many people were so desperate
- 14:40and so poor and there was such economic uncertainty
- 14:44that people just needed to sort of be told what to do
- 14:46because it was life or death, you know?
- 14:48And the idea of what Trump's doing and this like instability
- 14:51and what the flow on effects could be, I don't know,
- 14:54it's like it's kind of scary.
- 14:56Oh, definitely, it's like there's so many
- 15:00possible negative outcomes of this yet.
- 15:05A lot of people in the US will probably hanging on to
- 15:09one or two positive things that might come out of this
- 15:11but not thinking of like the flow on impacts
- 15:14or like the bigger broader impacts this will have.
- 15:17But yeah, it's kind of like propaganda, essentially.
- 15:21And this is the thing is it's like, you know, if he
- 15:24or all of his billionaire mates on all of the social media
- 15:27and data and like think about the things that you can influence
- 15:31and make people think and do and feel
- 15:33when you're kind of in charge of all of the media that we see.
- 15:38Like it is like, I think it started to spiral me beyond.
- 15:41Like I was aware of how bad it was but in my head I was like,
- 15:45oh well, it's three more years, it's three and a half years
- 15:47but actually so much of what he's doing is like outside
- 15:51of like the constitution and what has been,
- 15:54so it's like, well, what if he ends up being in power for longer?
- 15:56What if it's like ends up we're in a dictatorship?
- 15:59Like it's, I don't know, I was just like, oh my God,
- 16:02oh my God, do we all move to farms and just like live together
- 16:06and delete social media and just, we just pause the curve
- 16:10and we create the Carf Institute and we just heard lots of cows.
- 16:15Oh yeah, like that.
- 16:16Yeah.
- 16:17How to grow your herbs, water consistently and regularly
- 16:21and keep them for the long term.
- 16:23I mean, it kind of works.
- 16:25I'm here for it.
- 16:26Let's all move to the end, like just God.
- 16:30No, but there's been protests like thousands, thousands
- 16:33of people protesting in the US because of exactly that.
- 16:35It's like, this is not a democracy.
- 16:37This is a dictatorship of Trump and all his billionaire mates.
- 16:42But actually one thing that he is now being,
- 16:46I guess accused of is inside a trading.
- 16:49So because of this big kind of whiplash that we saw in the market
- 16:54where it was like, down massively, they're not massively
- 16:56because he paused these tariffs for 90 days,
- 17:00there is now questions around, he would have known that information
- 17:06and that because it information moved markets so substantially,
- 17:10people are asking questions now, hang on,
- 17:14did you collapse the stock market by shares and then increase it
- 17:20because you were privy to this information.
- 17:22So if he did anything in the slightest in terms of that
- 17:25or any of his close family or anyone,
- 17:28if he sent a text message or anything to someone saying,
- 17:31hey, look, buy stock because I'm going to reverse the tariffs tomorrow,
- 17:35that is completely and utterly illegal.
- 17:38But he's already a criminal, he's already been convicted of things
- 17:42and so maybe he just feels untouchable.
- 17:45Like, what if he actually did do that and then he just never gets
- 17:48any kind of repercussions?
- 17:50Yeah, well, I mean, he's also got power of pretty much the whole US government.
- 17:56And so, you know, any Democrat kind of standing up to him,
- 17:59trying to fight this, he'll be who should it down.
- 18:01But it just goes to show, it's like, you can't get,
- 18:05like this is just such a dictatorship if you can't,
- 18:07if you can behave illegally and get away with it.
- 18:10Like, it's absolutely barbaric.
- 18:12But I don't think it's a throw your talent and be like,
- 18:15oh my gosh, the world is full, doom and gloom,
- 18:17and I just want to go live on a farm.
- 18:19Not the farm, the herd.
- 18:21Other herb, sorry, yeah.
- 18:22I think it's a time to go, okay, this is a really great opportunity
- 18:27to make sure I'm diversified and to try and look for other opportunities.
- 18:31I think Europe and China are already having conversations with each other
- 18:36about, okay, how can we work together?
- 18:38Shit, yes.
- 18:39They haven't had conversations in years.
- 18:41Like, I've had friends here in London that jumped on trains to Paris
- 18:46because Chinese manufacturers were there to try and do business
- 18:50and they just divert it.
- 18:51So it's already happening.
- 18:53We're already seeing it unfold.
- 18:54That's amazing.
- 18:55And I think it's just going to be stronger.
- 18:57So I think there are, well, it might not seem like silver linings
- 19:03in all this, there is a whole world out there
- 19:09that resides outside of the US that is still going to want to operate
- 19:15and operate and release from a really strong position
- 19:17to counteract these tariffs and, you know, prove to the rest of the world
- 19:21that there is still innovation and growth and prosperity
- 19:26and autonomy and independence and democracy.
- 19:29But I also think it's a really important point, though,
- 19:31so because it's like, you need to vote
- 19:33because these are the people that you're voting in power
- 19:34and now you can actually see how much of an impact they can literally have on you
- 19:39and your wallet and your livelihoods.
- 19:41And your life and the people you love
- 19:43and your freedom of speech and choice and like it's actually so interesting
- 19:48because I think in the last couple of years
- 19:51I've only really honestly, maybe not even that long.
- 19:54I think since there's been so much political and economic uncertainty
- 19:59it has really highlighted that.
- 20:01I think sometimes with politics, like especially for me when I was younger,
- 20:06it did sort of feel like I had the approach of like,
- 20:09well, it's just one straw, you know?
- 20:12And like, I know that that sounds so uneducated
- 20:15and so it's actually embarrassing to admit.
- 20:19But when you see this much unfolding globally
- 20:23and that this comes down to politics,
- 20:27it just like shows the importance of being educated
- 20:30and making decisions that are, yeah, like being aware of like how much weight
- 20:35that has, it's, yeah, I can't even imagine what it would be like
- 20:39to be in the States right now, especially if you were left-wing or liberal.
- 20:43You feel pretty disheartened and unsafe.
- 20:46Yeah, and I guess the flow on effect of, like we've kind of spoken about inflation,
- 20:51but, you know, we're already seeing countries getting a bit more aggressive
- 20:55on interest rate cuts because, you know, global growth isn't going to be what it was
- 21:02because of all this uncertainty and companies trying to have to move production
- 21:07and manufacturing and increased costs. And so, you know, one thing we do know
- 21:11is that global growth is not going to be what it was.
- 21:14You know, if we looked at New Zealand, for example,
- 21:17our two biggest trading partners are China and the US,
- 21:19and then you've got Australia in there as well.
- 21:21And those two, you know, the US and China are having this whole tip for tat.
- 21:26And then Australia is getting caught up in the mix.
- 21:28We're getting caught up in the mix.
- 21:29So it's like, yes, we might sit there and go,
- 21:30we only got a 10% tariff or, you know, but there's,
- 21:34there's going to be flow on effects.
- 21:35But we're already seeing New Zealand's cut interest rates this week.
- 21:40What does that mean again?
- 21:41So that means that you're not going to get as much money
- 21:44on your savings in the bank.
- 21:46So term deposit rates come down, but it's done to stimulate the economy.
- 21:51So it's done to help grow the economy because it means people aren't saving as much,
- 21:56they're spending, they're taking on debt because debt is cheaper.
- 21:59Mortgage rates come down, so it's used as a lever
- 22:03to kind of get put fire in the belly of economies.
- 22:07So we will probably see this play out in a lot more countries around the world,
- 22:12which unfortunately means people that have a lot of money in term deposits
- 22:20are going to be the most impacted.
- 22:22And who are those people?
- 22:24Oh my god, elderly people.
- 22:27This is really hitting the retirees.
- 22:30Not only have a small amount in shares, not only is that, you know,
- 22:35falling off a cliff, well, I'm sorry, that was dramatic.
- 22:37That was not falling off a cliff.
- 22:40I've been reading too many headlines.
- 22:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:43It's blood on the streets.
- 22:46It's a sea of rage.
- 22:50Not only is the stock market falling, but if we're now seeing low interest rates,
- 22:55the rest of their portfolios or investments,
- 22:58and money that they have in term deposits is not going to be growing as much.
- 23:01So, you know, we can sit here and be like,
- 23:04oh, that's, oh, that sucks.
- 23:05But, you know, we've got five years, we've got tenure, we've got 20 years.
- 23:08Oh my god, that's so true.
- 23:09They probably don't.
- 23:11And they're trying to live off this money.
- 23:13So we blame Trump for that though, or is that the government that's making those decisions?
- 23:17Because interest rates coming down is something that happens all the time, isn't it?
- 23:22So this isn't drastically different, what it is when interest rates are down at other times, is it?
- 23:29Yes, but it's a byproduct of all of this situation that's going on.
- 23:34Because if we take New Zealand, for example, you know, if we're not exporting as much,
- 23:40because our two, three major countries aren't,
- 23:44training partners aren't growing as fast, we're not exporting as much.
- 23:47We don't need to hire as many people in those, you know,
- 23:50in agriculture and tourism or whatever, and hospitality suffers.
- 23:54So the way to stimulate that is to reduce interest rates.
- 23:58So it is a byproduct of lower global growth that we're going to be seeing.
- 24:04Which is when everyone's talking about like the fears of a recession,
- 24:07that is really what this is about, which is interest rates going down is because people
- 24:11don't really want to spend money.
- 24:12And if it's cheaper to borrow and be in debt, more people are likely to do it,
- 24:16which will help stimulate the economy.
- 24:18So it's that whole circular thing.
- 24:20What do you think is there like actually genuine fear of a global recession?
- 24:25Like is that what economists are thinking?
- 24:28I don't think a global recession.
- 24:29I just think it's going to be lower growth than that, than was expected.
- 24:33And there will probably be countries that will head into recession.
- 24:37And, you know, countries where that do rely on the US a lot.
- 24:43The US itself could even head into recession.
- 24:46There's talk of that.
- 24:47I mean, there's so many kind of what ifs at the moment.
- 24:50I feel like there's almost this weird feeling of like what if the US comes out stronger
- 24:56and better than ever?
- 24:57Like what if everyone moves all of them manufacturing to the US?
- 25:01What if all of a sudden the US is so dominant that it's almost the opposite of what you said before.
- 25:07Where other economies don't start thriving.
- 25:09And actually it's all centered in the US because there's no other way to do it.
- 25:12And people are just like, well, that's why Trump has done this.
- 25:16Because that's right.
- 25:17No, no, I know.
- 25:17But like a nation if that's actually what happens.
- 25:19Yeah.
- 25:20I mean, their unemployment is at 4%.
- 25:23It's at like all time lows, not all time.
- 25:26But it's at such a low level.
- 25:27I mean, where are they getting all these hundreds of thousands of people
- 25:32into these jobs if they're going to move the manufacturing?
- 25:34And it's going to take years to move this.
- 25:38This is not, you know, Apple overnight going,
- 25:41OK, cool, we can now manufacture iPhones in the US.
- 25:44And if we, if they did do that, iPhones are expected to jump in,
- 25:52you know, there's talks of three, three and a half thousand dollar iPhones.
- 25:56You know, because, OK, well, if you're going to get all your parts from America,
- 25:59you're going to make them all America, you're going to pay American wages.
- 26:02That's the price.
- 26:03And then, you know, does it really mean that we're not going to be buying iPhones?
- 26:08Or, you know, we're going to have less presence under the Christmas tree,
- 26:12or less, you know, food in the fridge.
- 26:14It's like, no, we're going to be paying those prices.
- 26:18But in order to do that, the wages have to go up.
- 26:20You know, it's like a whole cycle.
- 26:22So it's, it's just inflation is like screaming inflation right now
- 26:27in terms of the price of everything is going up,
- 26:30which we know we've been there very recently.
- 26:33We were at 40-year highs of inflation
- 26:37and look at all the countries that we're suffering.
- 26:39And that's why we had to decrease interest rates.
- 26:42So I kind of, I don't see how the US can absorb all of this
- 26:51if that's its plan and not have incredible
- 26:55reverberations in terms of high inflation and all of that,
- 27:00which is going to negatively impact the economy.
- 27:02So it's so catch-22 because you can't have one thing without the other.
- 27:07And so maybe it means tax cuts.
- 27:10Isn't the problem, though, that like,
- 27:12if inflation continues or gets more out of control,
- 27:15but we've already lowered our interest rates to try and combat
- 27:19the fact that no one's already spending,
- 27:21is there a risk of like that thing going into like deflation
- 27:25where it's like we're actually the opposite happens?
- 27:28Or I remember a while ago you saying like,
- 27:31the reason you can't bring interest rates down too much
- 27:34is because you need to be able to have levers to pull
- 27:37in case inflation or something happens and you pull them down.
- 27:41Like if they're already quite low,
- 27:43is there danger of it being the opposite of inflation?
- 27:47Or is that not really a thing?
- 27:48Well, you get such a balancing act, right?
- 27:50It's like you can't move them too far either way
- 27:54because it does impact inflation.
- 27:57But if you get to 0% and you've still got inflation out of control,
- 28:02then you go into negative interest rates,
- 28:04which is an absolute mind boggle.
- 28:09You're effectively paying the bank to hold your money.
- 28:13And it's just like, it kind of breaks the system really.
- 28:17Like Japan had negative interest rates.
- 28:19But yeah, that's a whole can of worms
- 28:23which we don't want to go into.
- 28:24And that's why you've got to be,
- 28:25I mean, there's other levers you can pull,
- 28:27you can do tax cuts,
- 28:29but then that means that you've got less
- 28:31like the government's got less income to spend on things like
- 28:34hospitals and schools and you know,
- 28:36so there's, it's just like just let don't,
- 28:39don't effort the system, you know?
- 28:41Like just like, as soon as you start kind of prodding it massively,
- 28:47it just kind of gets out of control.
- 28:50The Curve Investing Club is the world's first digital investing club
- 28:54for women to build their wealth.

- 28:58and beginners can really, really join forces

- 29:04So if you're listening to this podcast,
- 29:06you probably are aware that saving alone
- 29:09unfortunately can't make your millionaire,
- 29:11but investing definitely could.
- 29:13So we wholeheartedly believe in the power of community
- 29:16in that the best investment ideas come
- 29:19when we collaborate and learn with each other.
- 29:21So bring your friends, your mum,
- 29:24even strangers on the street if you want.
- 29:26There really is strength in numbers
- 29:28and we're so excited to create a community that's just for you.
- 29:34I think I just want to kind of summarise
- 29:37is like some really great advice that I read
- 29:39from Scott Galloway who is like,
- 29:43your dream man slash, you know,
- 29:45slightly.
- 29:46Try to get him on the podcast,
- 29:48but it hasn't worked.
- 29:49What ever happened to that?
- 29:51I keep chasing him, you know.
- 29:53Let's do it again, let's let's send him this clip
- 29:55so that he can just look at a total fangirl.
- 29:59But he said, never make decisions during emotional trauma
- 30:03and it's so true whether you're getting divorced,
- 30:07whether you're, whether someone's died,
- 30:09whether you know, like just do not make,
- 30:12and right now I'm not putting right now into those buckets,
- 30:15but like it's similar.
- 30:16It's like don't make decisions when you're emotional
- 30:19because yes, you might be like,
- 30:21damn it, I didn't sell, you know, back in February.
- 30:26I didn't, I shouldn't, you know,
- 30:27I was going to sell some stocks and I didn't.
- 30:29And, you know, say you sold them earlier this week.
- 30:33And then the next day Trump comes out
- 30:35and markets have absolutely skyrocketed.
- 30:37Like the emotional distress of that
- 30:41and the mental health impacts of you selling
- 30:44at the wrong time is far greater
- 30:48than, you know, you're not selling back in February.
- 30:51So it's like, just don't try, try not to get caught up.
- 30:53I know we're educating and I know we're giving you
- 30:56information about what's going on.
- 30:58But, you know, don't feel like you have to react
- 31:01to any of this is, you know, because it is emotional
- 31:05and it is stressful.
- 31:07And we are sitting here going, oh my gosh,
- 31:09what's the world going to look like?
- 31:10How is this going to impact, you know, our country,
- 31:13our jobs, our businesses.
- 31:15But, you know, I think just having a plan and sticking to it,
- 31:20it's times like these where we're like, okay,
- 31:22that is why you realize that's why you have a plan.
- 31:24It's the same when it comes to, you know,
- 31:28having life insurance so that if you,
- 31:30if you or someone that you love passes away,
- 31:32you know, you've got a plan, you've got stuff in place,
- 31:35having a prenup so if you go through a divorce,
- 31:37you don't have to make those rash decisions
- 31:39in an emotional state.
- 31:40It's like, like having pet insurance
- 31:43so that when your pet is sick.
- 31:45It's like going out, it's like deciding
- 31:47what you want to do when you're sober,
- 31:49not when you're drunk.
- 31:51Yeah, you know, it's like,
- 31:53are you in the mood for a bender?
- 31:55Yes or no, don't make that decision
- 31:57when you've had four margaritas.
- 31:59Do you know what I mean?
- 32:00It's like make that decision when you're sober
- 32:03and in a right mind.
- 32:05Yes.
- 32:05You have to remember the plan and stick to it.
- 32:08Put a stick in the background on your phone.
- 32:10Maybe it needs to be like, do not panic sell my shares
- 32:13or like remember the, what's like,
- 32:16I had a friend message me saying,
- 32:18lol, I've lost $47,000 in the last week.
- 32:21And I was like, remember, you haven't lost that.
- 32:23And she was like, life is gonna laugh at this point.
- 32:25That's the problem though, I was like,
- 32:27she's laughing about it so it's fine.
- 32:29But as soon as you, if you were to spiral
- 32:31and then make your decision,
- 32:32that could be like catastrophic.
- 32:34Oh, and you're so right.
- 32:37You're so right, she hasn't lost that.
- 32:39Do you know what I mean?
- 32:40Like it's so easy to be like,
- 32:41oh my gosh, I've just lost 30%
- 32:43or $47,000.
- 32:46But no, you haven't.
- 32:47Unless you actually react, that's when you have lost it.
- 32:52Yes, don't make the decision.
- 32:54Yeah, don't make the decision
- 32:56if you're not in a good frame of mind.
- 32:59Oh yeah, oh my god, there's so many good memes
- 33:01going around at the moment about the stock market.
- 33:02I love it. It's like, there's this like DJ
- 33:06and he's like, when your portfolio goes
- 33:08from negative 70 to negative 30
- 33:09and he's like, blah, blah, blah.
- 33:11Oh my god, there's some such good ones of like,
- 33:16what's that movie with?
- 33:17There's a three of them in the car
- 33:18and they're singing it anyway.
- 33:19There's one in the back and she's like, gold
- 33:21and she's like, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 33:23And then there's like Bitcoin and stocks
- 33:27are just like, absolutely not enjoying it at all
- 33:30and they've just got these sour looks on their faces
- 33:32and she's just like, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 33:35Oh my god, it's so funny.
- 33:36That's actually quite funny
- 33:37because I did actually buy gold and it's not like it's,
- 33:40I put a little bit in gold and the ETF
- 33:42that we spoke about in the investing club.
- 33:44Oh yeah.
- 33:45And it's just been interesting to watch it.
- 33:47Like, I know you always talk about how gold
- 33:49is like so safe and blah, blah, blah.
- 33:51If you zoom out on like three years, five years,
- 33:53it is just so steady.
- 33:56It's also boring.
- 33:57But yeah, it's so boring.
- 33:58Sometimes we like boring.
- 33:59We like the mild.
- 34:00We like the mild curries.
- 34:02We like insurance and we like sometimes a mild curry.
- 34:05Yes, sometimes, you know, living life on the edge
- 34:08is exhausting.
- 34:09Depping seeds always have insurance, always have a plan.
- 34:13And if it all goes tits up, please follow us at the herb.
- 34:21Oh my god.
- 34:24We're taking herb requests.
- 34:25If you want us to grow a rosemary basil,
- 34:27well, we're open.
- 34:29We're open to anything.
- 34:30Yeah.
- 34:31We're diversifying, you know?
- 34:33In fact, we'll consider planting tomatoes
- 34:38or lettuce if we have to.
- 34:40Yeah.
- 34:40We can diversify away from herbs if we must.
- 34:42Yeah.
- 34:43Have a good week.
- 34:43And we're not going to talk about anything else except Trump.
- 34:46I don't think anyone cares about other stuff right now.
- 34:49Yeah.
- 34:50When there's, you know, Trump headlines.
- 34:52But I'll include some more non-Trump stuff next week.
- 34:56We also have a meeting now, which we're 10 months later.
- 35:00Oh, that's what we're talking about.
- 35:02Oh, I see.
- 35:03That's why.
- 35:04Uh, no, there's nothing else to report on.
- 35:06There's nothing else to say.
- 35:07There's nothing else.
- 35:12Dock to you soon.
- 35:13Okay, bye.
