Latest / SEC Football Addiction / Ole Miss SHUTS DOWN Missouri in SURPRISING WAY!
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Toddy Toddy Nation, I figured that Ole Miss' offense would
- 0:02Speaker 1: wake up and choose violence today. I had a good
- 0:05Speaker 1: inclination that Trinidad Chambliss, Kiwan Lacy, and John David Baker's
- 0:08Speaker 1: crew would punch their way into the end zone.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Six would go ahead and.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Throw two or three touchdown passes and maybe even waltz
- 0:14Speaker 1: one in for another easy score. I figured that Ole
- 0:17Speaker 1: Miss was going to win this football game. What I
- 0:20Speaker 1: didn't figure... is how much of a one-sided affair it was.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Going to be.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And largely, because the defense, the unit that we've been
- 0:28Speaker 1: waiting to have that breakout moment, finally delivered in a
- 0:31Speaker 1: 31-3 win over Missouri.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And now the Rebels... They gotta feel pretty good.
- 0:36Speaker 1: About where they're going into week 8, into the month
- 0:39Speaker 1: of November, and into the race for the college football
- 0:42Speaker 1: playoff conversation. So, how did this game go? Let's break
- 0:44Speaker 1: it all down. Welcome on into SEC Football Addiction. Cole

- 1:02Speaker 1: Football Addiction, where me, TJ Pittenger, and Tom Hannafingo live
- 1:06Speaker 1: twice a week on the power too. Ole Miss' offense
- 1:08Speaker 1: we can get to in a little bit because they
- 1:10Speaker 1: definitely caught your attention in a lot of ways. Getting
- 1:12Speaker 1: back a healthy Kiwan Lacey and certainly feeling like that
- 1:15Speaker 1: you have maybe.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Turned a corner in a lot of different areas that
- 1:17Speaker 2: you want to see. But the defense is the story today.
- 1:21Speaker 1: With the return of Caden Leigh, With the return of
- 1:24Speaker 1: Austin Simmons, with how high potent this offensive attack was,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and knowing how the defense had played in the past,
- 1:31Speaker 1: especially against functioning running backs, you questioned if that was
- 1:35Speaker 1: going to be a reason why maybe this was a
- 1:38Speaker 1: back-and-forth shootout.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Now, I picked Ole Miss to win the football game,
- 1:41Speaker 2: and Ole Miss prevailed.
- 1:42Speaker 1: But I figured that this was going to be a
- 1:44Speaker 1: high-functioning scoring game, like 42-41 or 38-36. Something along those
- 1:51Speaker 1: lines where it's a back-and-forth battle between heavyweights. Just go
- 1:54Speaker 1: ahead and throw them back blows and deliver a couple
- 1:56Speaker 1: of knockout shots, but you get up right before the bell.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And instead, it was a lopsided affair. And largely, it's
- 2:01Speaker 1: because of how well that defense played.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Credit to Pete.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Golding today for delivering a hammer against his former quarterback. Now,
- 2:09Speaker 1: Austin Simmons did throw for over 300 yards. But it's
- 2:12Speaker 1: more than that. Look at the completion percentage.
- 2:14Speaker 2: 56.8%.
- 2:17Speaker 1: A lot of it was empty yards too and opportunities
- 2:19Speaker 1: to when the game was so far out of reach
- 2:21Speaker 1: because of how well that defense played. Number one, you
- 2:24Speaker 1: got to go ahead and look at that run defense.
- 2:26Speaker 1: That was an area that I think a lot of
- 2:27Speaker 1: people thought going into the game. If Missouri is going
- 2:31Speaker 1: to win, they're going to win off the likes of
- 2:32Speaker 1: Jamal Roberts because back-to-back weeks, Texas A & M, Florida,
- 2:36Speaker 1: the same Florida team that kept you in check in
- 2:39Speaker 1: the swamp.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Couldn't stop Jamal Roberts. Back-to-back 200-yard games.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Back-to-back games with multiple breakaway runs of 15-plus yards. Back-to-back
- 2:48Speaker 1: games where you're averaging 5.5 yards per play.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Little things like that.
- 2:52Speaker 1: 39 rushing yards on the day.
- 2:54Speaker 2: 20 carries.
- 2:56Speaker 1: The longest run of the day from anyone was on
- 2:59Speaker 1: Sean Edwards for 10 yards.
- 3:03Speaker 2: The longest run for Jamal Roberts? 6 yards.
- 3:06Speaker 1: So basically they said, we're going to sell out and
- 3:08Speaker 1: we're going to make sure that 20 doesn't beat us.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And he did it. And they killed it at the
- 3:12Speaker 2: line of scrimmage.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Running stunts, blitzes, easy formations at the middle. They were
- 3:17Speaker 1: able to go ahead and get five tackles for loss.
- 3:19Speaker 1: They got two sacks in the day. And then they
- 3:22Speaker 1: started putting pressure on Austin Simmons to where his mobility
- 3:26Speaker 1: inside the pocket couldn't work to his favor. That's a
- 3:28Speaker 1: testament to what you have with Pete Golden calling the plays.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And it's a major win, I.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Think, in favor of what you want to see moving
- 3:34Speaker 1: forward from this defense because our main question was, will
- 3:37Speaker 1: this be a reason why maybe Ole Miss shoots itself in.
- 3:39Speaker 2: The foot down the road?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Is this that one game where you look back and
- 3:43Speaker 1: say to yourself.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Well, Ole Miss finished 9-3, and it's.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Because they allowed so-and-so to pick them apart on the ground. Well,
- 3:51Speaker 1: now you know that you can do that because a
- 3:52Speaker 1: lot of big questions that we had going into this
- 3:54Speaker 1: game comes back to the run defense.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Like it or not, These are just facts.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Ole Miss entered today as a bottom 15 run defense
- 4:02Speaker 1: in the country. Teams were able to gash them and
- 4:05Speaker 1: pick them apart across the middle of the field. And
- 4:07Speaker 1: certainly at the line of scrimmage. To shut down the
- 4:10Speaker 1: number one running back in the SEC in terms of
- 4:13Speaker 1: total yards.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Major Testaments.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And yeah, certainly you had to give up a couple
- 4:17Speaker 1: of big-time breakaway plays to Austin Simmons through the air,
- 4:20Speaker 1: but you'll take that because if you weren't going to
- 4:22Speaker 1: be able to force them to have to run the football,
- 4:25Speaker 1: and what you did was by going into the second half,
- 4:27Speaker 1: finding a way to score, you were able to then
- 4:30Speaker 1: say the only way you're winning this game is by
- 4:32Speaker 1: throwing it against us. And certainly, they were able to
- 4:35Speaker 1: do that from time to time, but you look at
- 4:37Speaker 1: the total.
- 4:38Speaker 2: You look at the numbers.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Donovan O was the one leading guy with 127 yards.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Caden Lee was kept in check for the most part.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Jude James had a big gain of 57, I mean 22.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Outside of that, 57 yards in the day. Nashawn Montgomery,
- 4:52Speaker 1: the Florida transfer, had 34 yards on one catch. The
- 4:55Speaker 1: next catch was for less than a dozen. You did
- 4:58Speaker 1: your part being able to keep an offense that was
- 5:01Speaker 1: so high-functioning in check that allowed you to be able
- 5:04Speaker 1: to get the ball back to your offense. And there
- 5:07Speaker 1: certainly were some lulls on that side of the ball
- 5:08Speaker 1: early on. Some miscommunication, definitely some erratic passes from Trey
- 5:12Speaker 1: Dad Chambers. But your defense being able to keep it
- 5:15Speaker 1: at arm's bay, keep it at reach.
- 5:17Speaker 2: It was a 3-0 affair.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And then a 31-point differential in favor of the Rebels,
- 5:22Speaker 1: really not much more to say. Defense delivered in critical
- 5:26Speaker 1: moments on certain drives on third and second down to
- 5:29Speaker 1: force you to have to live in long situations that
- 5:32Speaker 1: then allowed them to throw it downfield to where they
- 5:34Speaker 1: really weren't going to get anything going in that standpoint,
- 5:36Speaker 1: which I think is, again, another massive win in favor
- 5:39Speaker 1: of Ole Miss because the defense kind of showed you
- 5:42Speaker 1: that when the offense is at least stalling at times,
- 5:44Speaker 1: they can step on up. That was something I looked
- 5:46Speaker 1: at for a team like Missouri that allowed them, I think,
- 5:49Speaker 1: to be able to play close to the vest in
- 5:50Speaker 1: a lot of their early games this year.
- 5:52Speaker 2: The defense delivering while the offense had its lulls.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Now, Ole Miss, a team that was relying so heavily
- 5:58Speaker 1: on shootout formations and trade-out play and trade-out football, being
- 6:02Speaker 1: that difference maker, being that dude that will go ahead
- 6:04Speaker 1: and lead you to the promised land, it didn't have
- 6:06Speaker 1: to be all on his shoulders in that moment.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Hey, guys, I'll get right back to the video, but
- 6:10Speaker 3: first I want to make sure you are subscribed both

- 6:40Speaker 3: All of the conference football addictions, college football addiction, and
- 6:43Speaker 3: of course, the power too. All right, back to the clip.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Even with Trinidad Chandler's not having the most perfect day,
- 6:50Speaker 1: according to our standards, and our standards are completely different
- 6:52Speaker 1: because of what we have witnessed over the last year
- 6:54Speaker 1: and a half, he's still delivered. It's very hard to
- 6:58Speaker 1: say that you had a terrible day at the office.
- 7:01Speaker 1: When you have four total touchdowns. Three through the air
- 7:03Speaker 1: and one on the ground. And that was the Trinidad
- 7:05Speaker 1: Chandler story once again. Easy scoring drives in the first half.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Spreading the ball around. I think that seven different receivers
- 7:11Speaker 1: caught at least two passes today. Deuce Alexander, Caleb Odom,
- 7:14Speaker 1: Horatio Fields, Traylon Wade, Caleb Cunningham, Kiwan Lacey.
- 7:17Speaker 2: All caught multiple balls.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And Luke Haas almost had a second catch. That would
- 7:21Speaker 1: have been seven different receivers. You spread the ball around.
- 7:23Speaker 1: You weren't too optimistic about going just to one guy.
- 7:26Speaker 1: You were able to go ahead and make decisive reads.
- 7:28Speaker 1: When things kind of fell apart at moments, you were
- 7:30Speaker 1: able to tuck and run and utilize your legs to
- 7:32Speaker 1: keep momentum in your favor.
- 7:34Speaker 2: That's the testament of what you had from.
- 7:35Speaker 1: A quarterback that was able to play within his surroundings
- 7:38Speaker 1: and not panic under duress. And there were times today
- 7:40Speaker 1: where certainly Mizzou's defense was able to get in the backfield.
- 7:43Speaker 1: They were able to put pressure. but it's built different
- 7:45Speaker 1: when you got a guy like Six. He knows how
- 7:48Speaker 1: to play in structure, and he definitely knows how to
- 7:50Speaker 1: play out of structure. In fact, probably the most dangerous
- 7:52Speaker 1: player on a football field is Trinidad Chambers when he
- 7:55Speaker 1: plays out of structure because of all you know is
- 7:57Speaker 1: that you have to be watching for the receivers downfield,
- 8:00Speaker 1: which easily he will just flick at the wrist, make
- 8:03Speaker 1: it a first down reception. But on the flip side,
- 8:05Speaker 1: if he wants to tuck and run, he will break
- 8:07Speaker 1: your ankles in the middle of space and get that
- 8:10Speaker 1: first down single-handedly.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But it wasn't single-handedly today.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Ole Miss finished with over 450 yards of offense, and largely,
- 8:17Speaker 1: that's due to what their running back position.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Was in general.
- 8:21Speaker 1: The return of Kiwan Lacy didn't find his way into
- 8:23Speaker 1: the end zone, but he rushed for 122 yards. He
- 8:26Speaker 1: had five runs of over 15 yards downfield. And Makai
- 8:29Speaker 1: Frazier really stepped on up and proved to everybody that
- 8:32Speaker 1: he is truly the second best running back with the team.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And when a guy like Kiwan Lacey, who dealt with
- 8:38Speaker 1: injuries in that second quarter, wasn't able to go, he
- 8:41Speaker 1: kept momentum moving. Ole Miss did not miss a beat.
- 8:45Speaker 1: even without their star running back playing against his former team,
- 8:49Speaker 1: that it feels like everyone seemed to forget about because
- 8:51Speaker 1: of we don't remember him at Missouri. But that's not
- 8:54Speaker 1: the case. Touchdown drive, touchdown drive, touchdown drive, touchdown.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Drive, and they have to be up 21-3.
- 9:00Speaker 1: The fumble that unfortunately was caused in the third quarter,
- 9:04Speaker 1: followed by late touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, and
- 9:07Speaker 1: then you get an extra field goal by Lucas Canero.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Easy plays that got you into a really good position.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Again, This was a performance that you look at from
- 9:13Speaker 1: Trinidad Chambliss and a performance that you look at from
- 9:15Speaker 1: the offense and say, while it wasn't our best stuff,
- 9:18Speaker 1: even when we had a B-level game, we still were
- 9:21Speaker 1: able to play up to par against a top-ranked team
- 9:24Speaker 1: in our backyard and help us get one step closer
- 9:26Speaker 1: to being the favorites in the.
- 9:28Speaker 2: College football playoff race.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Which, by the way, with how the SEC went today,
- 9:32Speaker 1: with how much chaos has involved around college football, Indiana losing,
- 9:36Speaker 1: Georgia losing, Alabama.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Losing, Who's to say that maybe Ole Miss isn't in.
- 9:41Speaker 1: A prime position to be able to go on a
- 9:43Speaker 1: run towards the college football playoff? They go next week
- 9:46Speaker 1: to Texas to take on a busted up Longhorn roster
- 9:50Speaker 1: that I have no idea what to expect from them
- 9:53Speaker 1: moving forward.
- 9:54Speaker 2: And I'll be completely real with you. Going into the season,
- 9:57Speaker 2: I had this as an easy win for Ole Miss.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Mainly because... I thought that at some point, Texas was
- 10:02Speaker 2: going to bend.
- 10:03Speaker 1: And I thought that they'd be undefeated coming into this game,
- 10:06Speaker 1: knowing that even with the bye week, Red River, a
- 10:09Speaker 1: matchup that was very emotional against a Florida team that
- 10:11Speaker 1: beat them last season, I figured that they would find
- 10:13Speaker 1: a way to drop the ball at some point. Now
- 10:15Speaker 1: I say to myself, when I look at Ole Miss,
- 10:18Speaker 1: I trust the quarterback. I trust the running game. I
- 10:20Speaker 1: trust the play caller. I trust the defense to at
- 10:23Speaker 1: least be able to perform up to par. And there's
- 10:25Speaker 1: nothing I look at with Texas that says that team
- 10:28Speaker 1: is able to hold down Trinidad Chandler and keep him
- 10:31Speaker 1: at arms bay. So in my opinion, why wouldn't I
- 10:34Speaker 1: consider that to be a win? You have matches following
- 10:36Speaker 1: that against Auburn, which did get a win today over Georgia.
- 10:39Speaker 1: But this one is going to be in your backyard.
- 10:41Speaker 1: So maybe, just maybe on Halloween, spooky things don't happen.
- 10:46Speaker 1: At home against Georgia, if we go on the road
- 10:48Speaker 1: against Oklahoma, home against Wofford, and home against Ole Miss,
- 10:52Speaker 1: I mean, Mississippi State to close out the year. Just saying,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you look at where this team is, 10-2 is a
- 10:56Speaker 1: guaranteed spot in the college football playoff for any Big
- 11:00Speaker 1: Ten or SEC roster. I can see one loss for
- 11:04Speaker 1: sure being on the table, but if this is the
- 11:06Speaker 1: version of Ole Miss that we get moving forward, which again, B,
- 11:10Speaker 1: B minus level offensive game, but A plus defensive game
- 11:14Speaker 1: to kind of signal it out to be about a
- 11:15Speaker 1: B level game, Who's to say that they're not playing
- 11:19Speaker 1: in Atlanta year one underneath Pete Golden?
- 11:21Speaker 2: It's possible.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I don't know if it's entirely going to happen because
- 11:24Speaker 1: weird things happen in the sport. And certainly you could
- 11:26Speaker 1: have a one loss team, another one loss team end
- 11:29Speaker 1: up making a run in the process. But outside of
- 11:32Speaker 1: the Georgia game, every single matchup, I think Ole Miss
- 11:35Speaker 1: will be favored.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Or at least you got to feel confident that they
- 11:37Speaker 2: can win that game. Certainly against Texas, certainly against Auburn,
- 11:40Speaker 2: certainly even though it will be on the road.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I think that until I see the offense of Oklahoma
- 11:45Speaker 1: start to step on up, I'm not going to doubt
- 11:47Speaker 1: the Rebels in this standpoint. And definitely when you look
- 11:50Speaker 1: at Mississippi State, the luster has kind of.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Worn on off.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Camario Taylor or not, I do think that there was
- 11:54Speaker 1: a ceiling for this Bulldogs roster. It's just unfortunate that
- 11:57Speaker 1: now without the starting quarterback, it may be coming a
- 12:00Speaker 1: lot sooner than we expected. But Ole Miss getting a
- 12:02Speaker 1: massive win against top-ranked team in their backyard with the
- 12:06Speaker 1: opportunity to continue down this pathway of sustainability.
- 12:09Speaker 2: They got to feel mighty good.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I want to see the defense have a game that
- 12:12Speaker 1: they can lean back and say, that was on us,
- 12:15Speaker 1: on how we were able to perform. And it's not
- 12:17Speaker 1: to say that they weren't going to win this game,
- 12:19Speaker 1: and I always thought that, again, Ole Miss would find
- 12:20Speaker 1: a way to come on out on the other side
- 12:22Speaker 1: unscathed after a bye week, kind of get right, get
- 12:26Speaker 1: their heads screwed on back straight after the performance against Vanderbilt.
- 12:30Speaker 2: But this was a game that I look back and
- 12:32Speaker 2: I will say... There were moments.
- 12:33Speaker 1: To where it felt like here could be where Mizzou
- 12:36Speaker 1: starts to get back in. Here's a couple moments or
- 12:39Speaker 1: here's a drive or two where Austin Simmons is starting
- 12:42Speaker 1: to get into a groove of things and enter Luke
- 12:44Speaker 1: Forelli and enter that defensive line and enter that secondary
- 12:48Speaker 1: making big plays. And then, of course, as Austin Simmons
- 12:50Speaker 1: on the final drive of the game just wants to
- 12:52Speaker 1: push it on into the end zone, a reminder that
- 12:56Speaker 1: there is a reason why Trinidad Chambliss is.
- 12:58Speaker 2: In Oxford and another quarterback is in Como. No bad
- 13:02Speaker 2: blood there.
- 13:03Speaker 1: But watching that interception, I think had to make a
- 13:05Speaker 1: little bit of Pete Golding feel better about knowing for
- 13:08Speaker 1: a fact that my defense basically pitched a shutout after
- 13:11Speaker 1: giving up a field goal very early on.
- 13:12Speaker 2: In the game.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Now he's got to continue this type of success moving
- 13:16Speaker 1: into the rest of conference play and certainly against teams
- 13:19Speaker 1: like Auburn, like Oklahoma, and certainly Mississippi State.
- 13:22Speaker 2: If you do that against them, plus Texas.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Or Georgia, you can lose one, but you don't want
- 13:26Speaker 1: to lose either. Atlanta is on the horizon.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And certainly, so is the birth of the college football playoff.
- 13:32Speaker 1: If you were to ask me today, what is my
- 13:33Speaker 1: expectation or confidence level that the Rebels will be punching
- 13:36Speaker 1: their ticket to the dozen dance?
- 13:38Speaker 2: I'd go about an 80.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I think it's fair to say at this point, 80%,
- 13:42Speaker 1: knowing what their schedule is and knowing what they can.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Afford to do.
- 13:45Speaker 1: That version would turn out Chandler, who is going to
- 13:48Speaker 1: still be better than what we expect.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Lock Rocky Day today. Confident that they're going to be
- 13:53Speaker 2: in that running. Make sure you like the video. Hit

- 14:14Speaker 2: Until next time, folks, I am Cole Thompson. Ole Miss
- 14:17Speaker 2: dominant win defensively.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Over Missouri, and now they feel one step closer towards
- 14:21Speaker 1: the college football playoff. Even with the B-minus performance from
- 14:24Speaker 1: the offense, things are rolling in Oxford.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Maybe they'll be rolling back to the postseason. Till next time, peace.
