- The Jays close the gap! This is The Sports Reset for Friday September 4th In MLB, the Jays beat the Cleveland Guardians 6 to 3 and moved within half a game of the final American League wild-card spot. Nathan Lukes drove in two runs with a pair of doubles, while Toronto’s bullpen delivered four and a third scoreless innings to protect the lead. The Jays have won five of six, captured the season series against Cleveland and now hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, a useful edge if the clubs finish level. The Los Angeles Dodgers also produced a late turnaround, edging the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 2. Tommy Edman singled and stole second in the ninth, Mookie Betts walked, and Teoscar Hernández drove both home with a walk-off double as the Dodgers avoided a sweep. Looking ahead, the Jays open a three-game MLB series at the Kansas City Royals on Friday, carrying their five-wins-in-six surge into another important stretch of the wild-card race. Cleveland also faces the Detroit Tigers twice, beginning with a makeup game, so the teams around Toronto have a full day ahead. The New York Yankees visit the San Diego Padres in another marquee interleague series, while the Dodgers welcome the Washington Nationals after Thursday’s dramatic finish. In the CFL, the BC Lions take a five-game winning streak into Montreal against the league-leading Alouettes. Nathan Rourke has thrown for 2,784 yards for BC, while Davis Alexander has 3,657 yards and 24 touchdowns for a Montreal team that is 9 and 2. Beyond the scoreboard, the NBA suspended Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer for one year, fined the club 30 million dollars and removed five first-round picks for salary-cap circumvention connected to Kawhi Leonard’s off-court deals, clearing the way for Leonard’s trade to the Raptors to proceed.
