- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30Amen. Thank you for praying.
- 0:34All right. This evening.
- 0:36By the way, for those of you that just turned in, I'm Pastor
- 0:39Bob Clay Camp. I'm one of the assistant pastors
- 0:41here. And tonight we're going to be in
- 0:45the Gospel of Matthew, so. If you are at home watching or
- 0:51you're listening on Grace FM and you're able to open up the
- 0:55Bible, we're in. We're going to be in Matthew
- 0:57chapter 5. So those of you downstairs in
- 1:02the Res area go ahead and turn to Matthew chapter five.
- 1:04We know you're down there and I know you're sipping your coffee,
- 1:08but we are up here. So what?
- 1:12But we're all still together. You got that?
- 1:14Okay, Matthew, Chapter 5. And as I have read the scripture
- 1:24many, many times through over my 54 years of knowing the Lord, I
- 1:30just recently asked the Lord, when I open up the Gospels
- 1:35again, could you make it fresh again?
- 1:39Even though I know all the accounts, I I just want you to
- 1:43stir my heart as if I've never heard it before.
- 1:47And and keep it fresh for me and help me to notice things that
- 1:53maybe I missed before. Because the Bible's like that as
- 1:57you read through. It's not like a novel or some
- 2:00even a nonfiction. It is absolutely the truth.
- 2:05And there are so many things to pull out of these 66 books here
- 2:10called the Bible that for the rest of your life, even if we
- 2:15you know, if you somehow live. By cryogenics, you know, hope to
- 2:21be 200 years old or something. There's still something to glean
- 2:24out of the scripture because it's our life changes and it's
- 2:28the Holy Spirit who is our teacher.
- 2:30Amen. So we're going to be looking at
- 2:34Chapter 5, and it's the beginning of the section that
- 2:38Matthew put together called the Sermon on the Mount.
- 2:42Now this is a collection that Matthew the Apostle put together
- 2:46at the head of his gospel because his gospel is written to
- 2:50really reach his Jewish people. That that is, that's his heart
- 2:56in in the whole Gospel of Matthew.
- 2:59The other gospels, Mark and Luke and John, have specific emphasis
- 3:05according to what was on their heart by the Holy Spirit.
- 3:09And so here Matthew is putting this collection together, and as
- 3:13I was reading the Sermon on the Mount this time I wanted to
- 3:17catch the overall feel and I wanted to find out why.
- 3:23Why these be attitudes? Why these blessings at the
- 3:28beginning and how do they tie in with the rest of the Sermon on
- 3:32the Mount? Because I I don't think there
- 3:35are a preamble, but. But it is interesting that Jesus
- 3:41was speaking to his disciples and not to the crowds, although
- 3:45they were overhearing. And so there's something
- 3:48important that the Lord Jesus was wanting to impart to his
- 3:53disciples. And so we're here in the 21st
- 3:56century, and we're his disciples.
- 3:58Most of this in here. Some of you may not.
- 4:01Some of you may be just kind of considering and searching.
- 4:04And I'm glad that you're here, because this is a time.
- 4:08Like the Lord says in Isaiah, come now, let us reason
- 4:13together, says the Lord. Though your sins are a scarlet
- 4:17before God, they shall be as white as snow.
- 4:21Though they be red as Crimson, they shall be as white as wool.
- 4:25Because God's desire, as we're going to see in these verses
- 4:29here, verses 1 to 12, God's desire is to do a work in us.
- 4:36Which leads to a work that causes us to look upward to God.
- 4:41And with that loaded vessel, we're to go out to the world.
- 4:49But going out to the world without first having the Holy
- 4:53Spirit work in your heart, I think is the cart before the
- 4:57horse, because you don't have the heart of the Father yet.
- 5:01And that's what we're to impart to the world that is so lost and
- 5:05needs the hope of the gospel. So our title for this section,
- 5:09Chapter 5 verses 1 to 12, is called Inward, Upward and
- 5:15Outward. Inward, upward and outward.
- 5:20Now the first time that I taught this study.
- 5:27Because I found the notes handwritten was way back in
- 5:311992, and I was, I was on a cruise and of the Alaskan inland
- 5:38passage with Pastor Chuck and it was formal night and we were
- 5:45coming back from the inland passage and we hit that middle
- 5:49section where you're kind of in the open ocean and it was stormy
- 5:54and I get motion sick. Very easy.
- 5:59And so I've got the patch behind my ear, the scopamine patch
- 6:02that's supposed to last three days, which pretty much lasts 3
- 6:06minutes. And it's formal night.
- 6:09So I got this tie on and as I'm at the dinner and I and it's my
- 6:14time to teach, I've never taught in front of Pastor Chuck ever.
- 6:17And so he's going to be there and this has got to be good.
- 6:20But I'm I'm filling queasy. I'm all colors of funny green
- 6:24and so. I come up to Pastor Chuck and I
- 6:27say, Pastor Chuck, I'm not, I'm not sure if I can do this
- 6:31tonight. And I mean, you know, and in the
- 6:33meantime, the whole thing is going like this as I'm talking,
- 6:37you know, the the glasses are clinkly and all.
- 6:41And so he goes, well, Bob, you know, it's, it's all right,
- 6:45We'll work around it. And then Pastor Raul Reese is
- 6:48right next to him and he says, Oh yeah, I remember that time I
- 6:51got up there and I started talking and then I just threw up
- 6:54in front of everybody. And so I go, I go back to my
- 7:01cabin and I'm, I'm, you know, rocking and rolling, going God,
- 7:04please, please, please don't do this.
- 7:08I mean come on. And so I said I got to do this.
- 7:12I just got to do this. I mean it's the only time I'm
- 7:15ever going to teach in front of Pastor Chuck.
- 7:17So. So finally we get to the place,
- 7:23the venue. It was in the bow of the ship,
- 7:27which is going like this okay. And then that there were, there
- 7:31were red glittery curtains behind it.
- 7:35And so the curtains were going like this and I'm going, gosh,
- 7:41Lord, I can't look. I just can't look.
- 7:43Pastor Chuck had and I will get to the study, come on, don't
- 7:46worry. And Pastor Chuck has this guy
- 7:49playing harmonica from his church.
- 7:51So he must have played like 17 verses of Amazing Grace on this
- 7:55harmonica while I'm waiting for my time.
- 7:58And so finally he gets done. Pastor Chuck gets up there,
- 8:01introduces me as one of the old hippies from the Jesus
- 8:04Revolution. You know, I'm going super.
- 8:07So I finally get up there and I made a deal not to look at
- 8:13Pastor Chuck ever when I'm teaching.
- 8:17So I looked down at my notes. And the three points were
- 8:20inward, upward and outward. And I say, please God, I don't
- 8:25want to give a visual on this on these three points because I'm
- 8:31just sick as a dog. So I get like 2/3 of the way
- 8:36through the study and I make the mistake.
- 8:39But it was spirit directed. And I I glanced down at Pastor
- 8:44Chuck and he's like this. He's looking at me.
- 8:49Not saying anything. You have one minute and what was
- 8:54the guy with the harmonica took all my time and so I I quickly
- 8:59wrapped it up and I was I was okay, made it through.
- 9:05So anyway I probably made you sick now for the study.
- 9:08But the three points of today's study are inward, upward and
- 9:12outward, because when you look at the beatitudes.
- 9:18I think they fit within these three categories.
- 9:22I know there's lots of commentaries on the beatitudes
- 9:26you can look at. Almost every single commentator,
- 9:30Bible commentator has his own take on it.
- 9:32So I just want to present to you what I see here and I want you
- 9:37to consider it. You don't have to agree with me,
- 9:40just consider it, OK, Versus. Three through 5 would come under
- 9:49the category of inward because I believe it describes the inward
- 9:56work of the Holy Spirit that takes place to bring us to that
- 10:02place of repentance. And then verses 6-7 and eight
- 10:08are in the second category, and that category is called the
- 10:13upward result. Of the inward working where we
- 10:18get our eyes on the Lord. Something happens in us and it
- 10:22draws us right to God. And we'll talk about that.
- 10:27That's versus 6 through 8 and then versus 9 to 12.
- 10:31The outward working of the Holy Spirit to a lost world.
- 10:36And so I think as we go through it, you might see these things,
- 10:40but the one thing I want you to do most of all.
- 10:44Is to take out your pen. Or if you've got your tablet and
- 10:48you do little doodles on it, make a note of what God is
- 10:53ministering to you as we cover this, because it's fascinating
- 11:00that you had no idea what I was going to teach and the Holy
- 11:04Spirit knew you're going to be here and there's something for
- 11:08you tonight. So let's just prepare our hearts
- 11:12for this. I'm going to read through verses
- 11:141 to 12 and then we'll start with prayer.
- 11:17Longest introduction you've ever heard.
- 11:20Okay chapter 5. Matthew and seeing the
- 11:24multitudes. Jesus went up on a mountain and
- 11:28when he was seated his disciples came to him.
- 11:32Then he opened his mouth and taught them, saying blessed or
- 11:37blessed. Are the poor in spirit, for
- 11:41theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for
- 11:47they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they
- 11:52shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and
- 11:56thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
- 12:01Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
- 12:06Blessed are the pure in heart. For they shall see God.
- 12:12Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of
- 12:16God. Blessed are those who are
- 12:19persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the Kingdom
- 12:24of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile
- 12:29and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you
- 12:34falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad,
- 12:39for great is your reward in heaven.
- 12:42For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- 12:47Father in heaven, We're asking now for your ministry to us
- 12:52through the word of God by the Holy Spirit.
- 12:56It's no accident we are here tonight.
- 13:00We are here to hear from you. Open our ears, Lord.
- 13:06Open our hearts to receive and obey in Jesus name.
- 13:11Amen. Well, let's take a look at the
- 13:141st 3 Beatitudes verses 3 through through five.
- 13:20And I put this under the category of the inward working
- 13:24of the Holy Spirit. And the very first one is
- 13:29Blessed are the poor and Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of
- 13:33heaven. Matthew's Gospel includes the
- 13:41word in spirit in the Greek, but as Luke covers this, he just
- 13:47says blessed are the poor. I firmly believe Jesus is not
- 13:53laying out some recipe for dealing with social injustices.
- 13:58I believe this has to do with coming into the Kingdom of God.
- 14:03And getting your heart right before God first, because unless
- 14:08that work takes place in your heart by the Holy Spirit, you
- 14:13really don't have the power or the heart of God.
- 14:17You just have a message and that's God is able to use that.
- 14:22But God wants to change the Messenger while they deliver the
- 14:27message, and so consider this blessed.
- 14:32It's a it's more of a Kingdom perspective than an emotional
- 14:35experience or an increase in outward conditions.
- 14:39And yet sometimes in our Western mindset, we think, well, that
- 14:42means that, you know, I'll be prosperous.
- 14:45Wait a minute. It's Kingdom perspective blessed
- 14:50from Kingdom's perspective. It's not the result of striving
- 14:55to be like the quality listed. So it's not about Okay.
- 15:00I'm going to be poor in spirit. I'm going to purpose to be poor
- 15:03in spirit. No, no.
- 15:04It's the result of God's spirit working on the inside of the
- 15:09soul. Poor in spirit has to do with
- 15:16those who have been been made aware of their absolute poverty
- 15:22before God. I've got nothing to offer.
- 15:27God by the Holy Spirit opens your eyes to see your condition
- 15:32that you have nothing really to give to Him.
- 15:36The sin has saturated your life. Everything you touch is falling
- 15:43apart. Sin.
- 15:44It's running wild through your life and and you're in poverty.
- 15:49The opposite of poor and spirit is proud in spirit.
- 15:53Where you're the self-made person and that I can do it
- 15:56myself. I don't need God, I'll do it
- 15:58myself. That's not poor and spirit,
- 16:01that's proud and spirit. And there's no blessing on that
- 16:03from heaven because God resists the proud, but he'll give grace
- 16:09to the humble. So then Peter says so humble
- 16:13yourselves in the side of the Lord that he may lift you up and
- 16:17do season. How do you humble yourself in
- 16:20the side of the Lord? You agree with him and it takes
- 16:26the Holy Spirit to turn the light on to see our true
- 16:30condition because the Bible says we're in darkness spiritually
- 16:35until he shines that light. Blessed are the poor and Spirit
- 16:43as God shines his light on your heart and shows you your
- 16:47absolute poverty before him. That's called brokenness.
- 16:53You're broken. You've got nothing to offer, and
- 16:57you see that and you're convinced of it.
- 17:00And when that takes place, you don't care what's going on at
- 17:04social media. You don't care what about your
- 17:06work, you don't care about anything else.
- 17:09Your whole life is being put in the limelight with God, and you
- 17:15sense that poverty of spirit. Psalm 34 verse 18 says the Lord
- 17:22is near to those who have a broken heart and save, such as
- 17:30have a contrite spirit. Psalm 5117 says the sacrifices
- 17:36of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart.
- 17:43These so God you will not despise.
- 17:48I want you to think for a moment what it feels like to have a
- 17:51broken heart. Do you really feel that God is
- 17:56close? Doesn't it feel like you're all
- 18:00alone? You can be in the midst of a
- 18:02crowd of 1000 people and you still are just feeling like
- 18:06you're all alone. You're an island.
- 18:10Your life is collapsing. You've got a brokenness in your
- 18:14life. But God wants us to to
- 18:19understand that he is near those who have a broken heart, and he
- 18:27saves, such as have a contrite spirit.
- 18:30Isaiah 5715 says, For thus says the high and lofty one who
- 18:34inhabits eternity, whose name is holy.
- 18:38I dwell in the high and holy place with him who has a
- 18:43contrite and humble spirit. To revive the spirit of the
- 18:47humble and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
- 18:52So here's the deal. If you're going through
- 18:56brokenness in your life right now because of what's taking
- 18:59place, and you're asking where was God?
- 19:03Couldn't he have stopped this? How could he have allowed this
- 19:06to happen to me? What's going on in your life
- 19:11right now is brokenness. And you, you need to understand,
- 19:18first of all, God is near and he wants to heal, but you have to
- 19:25do it his way. You can't just put a Band-Aid on
- 19:29it. You need open heart surgery
- 19:33spiritually. And that's what he has come to
- 19:36do. And in the midst of that.
- 19:41In the midst of that poverty, we are to understand that he
- 19:46considers us in a place of blessing because it's a place of
- 19:51preparation. It's maybe you don't see it as a
- 19:56place of preparation, you see it as a place of destruction.
- 20:01But God is the rebuilder. God is the transformer of a life
- 20:07that's broken. Theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
- 20:14Understand, you may lose everything in this life and you
- 20:17may die absolutely a pauper, but you have the fullness of the
- 20:24Kingdom of heaven. As a matter of fact, you have it
- 20:27right now spiritually, even though your life falls apart
- 20:31physically. Let's continue on the second one
- 20:36here. Blessed are those who mourn, for
- 20:40they shall be comforted. Now if we're looking at the
- 20:43first one and seeing a progression, when God shows you
- 20:49your poverty, He also shows you that your sins separate you and
- 20:55Him. And there's a mourning that
- 20:59takes place, that the Holy Spirit works into our heart.
- 21:03And it's interesting that the word blessed and mourn are put
- 21:05together because they seem rather diametrically opposed.
- 21:11I I believe the context here with mourning has to do with
- 21:15deep mourning, seeing your condition before God as he sees
- 21:20it, because that's essential. You're not just following a
- 21:24philosophy. Your life gets changed by the
- 21:29work of the Spirit of God on the inside.
- 21:32First, to try to do these things on the outside, without any kind
- 21:37of inward work, is the cart before the horse.
- 21:43I when I read, blessed are those who mourn.
- 21:45I think of Peter when the Lord asked to use Peter's boat to
- 21:51give his message to the crowd after Peter and Andrew had
- 21:56fished all night and caught nothing.
- 21:59And then after the end of the message Jesus says to Peter
- 22:02launch out into the deep and Cath throw out your Nets for a
- 22:06catch. And Peter said, Lord, we have
- 22:10fished all night and caught nothing nevertheless that your
- 22:14word will go out there. And so he's he's rowing out
- 22:21there. Jesus is in the boat because
- 22:23later on Peter falls at Jesus knees and he doesn't row back
- 22:27into the shore and then fall at Jesus knees.
- 22:30Jesus is still in the boat when this whole thing and Luke
- 22:33chapter 5 unfolds and all the fish and they're, you know
- 22:37whistling to James and John on the shore, bring your boat.
- 22:40Our boat is sinking. The net is breaking.
- 22:43By the way to break one of those rope Nets is a big deal.
- 22:47I mean the weight that must have been there with that catch.
- 22:52But it caught Peter in the midst of his unbelief.
- 22:59And Peter said, depart for me, Lord, I'm a sinful man.
- 23:04All he could see was his unbelief in his sin.
- 23:11And that's when the Lord said, I'll make you a Fisher of men.
- 23:21They shall be comforted. You know, God gave a a word of
- 23:26comfort to Israel and Isaiah 40 versus one and two Comfort.
- 23:30Yes, comfort. My people says you're God.
- 23:33Speak comfort to Jerusalem. Cry out to her that her warfare
- 23:36has ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, for she has received
- 23:41from the Lord's hand double for all her sins.
- 23:45In Psalm 32. David cries out about this
- 23:49morning, and he says, when I first three, when I kept silent,
- 23:54my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long.
- 23:59For day and night your hand was heavy upon me.
- 24:03The vitality was turned into the drought of summer.
- 24:07Say la I acknowledged my sin to you and my iniquity I have not
- 24:13hidden. I said I will confess my
- 24:18transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my
- 24:24sin. The comfort is God's forgiveness
- 24:33after we're convinced that we've got nothing to offer to God, he
- 24:38says. I agree.
- 24:42And that's where we're starting. And I'm going to give you
- 24:47everything you need. But first your sins are
- 24:52forgiven. I think that's an important life
- 24:57change, man. I remember that at age 18.
- 25:02I was so messed up when my mom died.
- 25:05When I was 15 I went on this journey to try to contact her
- 25:10from the dead and that led me into Ouija boards and automatic
- 25:15writing sessions and taking the drugs and and getting at the
- 25:20Eastern mysticism and and all of that and and I was heading on
- 25:25into a life of of self destruct for the next three years
- 25:29especially. And then the Lord and his
- 25:32kindness sent believers to me that I had to live with and in
- 25:38the house that we were in. And and you know, I'm just so
- 25:44grateful. I'm so grateful for how God set
- 25:49this up. And those of you that are
- 25:51Christians, I want you to take, I want you to remember back on
- 25:54how God not set you up, but how he searched you out, how he put
- 26:02you in situations and how he put people in front of you and and
- 26:06how you just kind of get out of here, get out of here and
- 26:08laughed at him and mocked him. And God is just setting you up.
- 26:12Yeah, I'm going to say that he set you up because he loved you.
- 26:16He called you. He knew your need, and then he
- 26:22forgives you and you have no right to be forgiven.
- 26:29But he did it because he loved you.
- 26:32And yet it wasn't just amnesty. The price for your sin was laid
- 26:38upon Christ on the cross, and the righteousness of Jesus were
- 26:44given was given to you who believe.
- 26:50Let's go on to the third one here, Blessed or the meek.
- 26:55Meekness here means yieldedness, by the way.
- 26:57It doesn't mean weakness. Meekness is power under control.
- 27:03A picture of meekness is a jockey on top of a racehorse.
- 27:08That horse can just go so fast, but the jockey has the horse in
- 27:13control. Meekness is yielding us before
- 27:18God, and I think the two phrases that stand out are not my will,
- 27:24but yours. Be Done fits into this idea of
- 27:28meekness, and the Holy Spirit does that job in our life.
- 27:33Brings us to the place to say whatever you want to do, Lord,
- 27:38in my life, through my life, I'm yours.
- 27:43Do it your way. Do it in your timing.
- 27:48I trust you and I yield to you. That's a work of the Holy
- 27:53Spirit. Because our flesh is totally.
- 27:56I'm doing it my way, you know. Don't tell me what to do.
- 28:00I'll do what I want to do. It's my truth.
- 28:03That's not meekness. But that has to be a work of the
- 28:07Holy Spirit in your life. Meekness.
- 28:12For they shall inherit the earth.
- 28:14Because yielding this to the Lord, what may cost you earthly
- 28:18possessions, it may cost you your job, it may cost you being
- 28:22written out of the family will. It may cost you all kinds of
- 28:25things outwardly. But yours is you're going to
- 28:31inherit the earth. So don't worry about the loss.
- 28:35This life is only temporary. So then, now let's look at the
- 28:40upward result of that inward working and it starts in verse
- 28:43six with blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
- 28:47righteousness. When we become born again,
- 28:54something changes on the inside and all the sudden we just want
- 29:00to find God. We want to hear what He says.
- 29:04We we want to get it straight from him.
- 29:07And there's this hunger that happens in us.
- 29:11You know there are three basic drives with all humans.
- 29:14First of all is air, secondly is thirst and 3rd is hunger.
- 29:23And you take this concept of hunger and thirst and apply it
- 29:26to true righteousness and it gives you an idea of the
- 29:30desperation. I've got to find out.
- 29:36I remember when I first became a Christian, I went home and got
- 29:41the family Bible and I brought it.
- 29:44This old baby has been around a long time.
- 29:48And so I took it and I opened it up and I'm looking at it.
- 29:57I'm going, I want to hear what Jesus has to say.
- 29:59And so I'm trying to find and all of a sudden here's the
- 30:02Gospels and I'm going red. How come it's in red.
- 30:07And and those are all the things I wonder if red means that
- 30:12they're blood And so it's the blood of Jesus and and so I'm I
- 30:16missed I'm still doing all these mystical things.
- 30:19And then as I'm reading and I'm going, wait a minute, there are
- 30:23words that are italicized that must mean something heavy.
- 30:26And so unto thee that smite at thee on the 1 cheek, what's
- 30:33what's 11? What does one mean?
- 30:36I mean, here's the thing. Italics in the Bible are just
- 30:40put in there by the translator to help smooth out the sentence
- 30:43for it to make sense. But I didn't have much sense.
- 30:50And so this look at the dust. This family Bible was given to
- 30:56my dad in 1947 when he left Kansas and moved to Oregon and
- 31:02just thought I'd bring it, David writes in Psalm 63.
- 31:08Oh God, you are my God, early will I seek you my soul.
- 31:15Thirst for you. My flesh longs for you in a dry
- 31:18and thirsty land where there is no water.
- 31:21So I have looked for you in the sanctuary to see your power and
- 31:25your glory. But I want you to think about
- 31:30something. What keeps a person from
- 31:34hungering and thirsting after righteousness?
- 31:40How does a Christian who initially was so hungry?
- 31:46How can they now take it or leave it?
- 31:49What on earth happens? Where did that hunger go?
- 31:56Well, I think there's a hint from the words of Jesus in the
- 32:00Book of Revelation. He's talking to a group of
- 32:03believers in the city of Leodosia, and here's what he
- 32:07tells them. Because you say, I am rich, have
- 32:12become wealthy, and have need of nothing, and do not know that
- 32:17you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked.
- 32:24You said they lost the the, the, the perspective of who they were
- 32:28before they even came to him. And now they had filled in all
- 32:32their identity with all the things that the city of Leodosia
- 32:36was famous for. But then Jesus doesn't leave
- 32:42them there. He says I want you to change.
- 32:46I I want to lift you out of that condition.
- 32:48I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, that
- 32:55you may be rich. And Peter talks about our faith
- 32:58being much more precious than gold that perishes and white
- 33:03garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your
- 33:07nakedness may not be revealed. Of course this is a reference to
- 33:11the righteousness of Christ as a robe of righteousness being upon
- 33:16you, because without that robe you are naked before God,
- 33:21nothing to offer and anoint your eyes with eyes AB that you may
- 33:26see. Because they were blind, they
- 33:30had blinded themselves thinking they were fine before God.
- 33:35And because nothing was happening in their heart they
- 33:40had all they had lived a lived a surface charge life.
- 33:46So the council here was as many as I love.
- 33:49I rebuke and chase and therefore be zealous and repent and get
- 33:55back to your first love like he told the Ephesians.
- 33:59Because if you hunger and thirst after righteousness you will be
- 34:03filled not possibly but will be filled.
- 34:07And what are you filled with? You're filled with true life,
- 34:12with purpose, and with true identity, and that's good news.
- 34:18But the inward work has to happen 1st, and then there's a
- 34:23result of the upward looking to God.
- 34:28And then in verse 7, blessed or the merciful, for they shall
- 34:33obtain mercy. The the Greek word for merciful
- 34:36means to be compassionate. And here's the problem, when we
- 34:41look at people and just say OK, what's going to be my human
- 34:47reaction to what I'm seeing? I think again you've got the
- 34:51cart for the before the horse because the whole context is
- 34:55seek God first because one of his first self-proclaimed
- 35:02attributes in in Exodus 34 is merciful.
- 35:09God sets the definition for true mercy, not man.
- 35:15And you know what? Sometimes mercy says no,
- 35:21sometimes mercy says wait. God gives the definition of what
- 35:28true mercy is all about. How can we be truly merciful and
- 35:32compassionate unless we really see how he has been with us?
- 35:38Because that that provides the the life source that we are able
- 35:43to be merciful to others must begin with God.
- 35:50They shall obtain mercy. In Colossians 3, verse 13, Paul
- 35:57exhorts the Colossian believers bearing with one another and
- 36:02forgiving one another. If anyone has a complaint
- 36:05against another, Even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do
- 36:11so. It starts with getting a proper
- 36:13view of who he is and then that way you can live out your life.
- 36:19And then verse 8. Blessed are the pure in heart.
- 36:23It's interesting. The word pure is that Greek word
- 36:27that we get, our English word, catharsis of burning away.
- 36:33Because that's what happens as you spend time with the Lord.
- 36:35He just flushes out the the brine.
- 36:38He flushes out the defilement in your thought life, in your
- 36:43words, in your attitudes. God by the Holy Spirit does
- 36:48that. If you say, you know, I just
- 36:49want to be pleasing to God for all that he's done in my life,
- 36:55it's a pruning process. It's a a flushing.
- 36:59I call it the royal flush. You know, it's better than any
- 37:02toilet. It just, you know, Lord, flush
- 37:05me out of all that stuff for they shall see God.
- 37:11You know what that means? It means you see the
- 37:14fingerprints of God at work around your life because it's
- 37:22like the white noise is gone and you can hear the station.
- 37:30It's fascinating to see God working and you know it's him
- 37:34because it couldn't be anybody else and you see him at work.
- 37:38Blessed are those who have believed and have not seen him
- 37:42physically, is what Jesus is referring to there.
- 37:47But I want to see his fingerprints.
- 37:50I want to be sensitive to see his handiwork as you as you hear
- 37:57about earthquakes and what takes place.
- 38:00There are Thunder and lightning and and how a Thunder clap can
- 38:05absolutely rock your house. As well as my dog jumping on the
- 38:13bed and all of a sudden I got a vibrator bed.
- 38:15You know, the dog is just shaking and freaking out.
- 38:21Now let's look at the third one and then we'll close with this
- 38:26the outward working of the Holy Spirit.
- 38:29And this. I think it's important.
- 38:31He works in us to bring us to the place of brokenness, so that
- 38:37he might heal us, so that we might hunger and thirst for
- 38:42righteous and say and say, oh Lord, all I want is you.
- 38:46I want to yield my life. I want to be pure and hard.
- 38:50I want you to do your work your way.
- 38:53And then he says, OK, now you're ready, go out into the world
- 38:59with what I've done in your life and tell them what I have done.
- 39:05Because he says your blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall
- 39:11be called sons of God. I think this really, in context
- 39:17has has more to do with presenting how you can be at
- 39:25peace with God rather than settling your marriage conflict.
- 39:32By the way, when two armies fight and one army wins, the
- 39:38winning army sets the conditions for peace, not the loser.
- 39:44We don't set the conditions for peace for God.
- 39:48He sets the conditions for peace.
- 39:52Believe on my son and you'll have everlasting life and your
- 39:57sins will be forgiven. That's called reconciliation.
- 40:03God has called us to be ambassadors because we learn in
- 40:09Second Corinthians chapter 5, Paul says.
- 40:13Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were
- 40:18pleading through us. We implore you on Christ's
- 40:22behalf, be reconciled to God. The ultimate peace that the
- 40:28world needs starts in the heart first, doesn't start with
- 40:33legislation, doesn't even start with conquering an outward
- 40:37enemy. It starts in the heart, peace
- 40:41with God. And then you get to experience
- 40:44the peace of God. And that's why Jesus said they
- 40:49shall be called sons of God, because God's highest goal is to
- 40:53redeem man to himself. But here's the thing.
- 40:58Verse ten, once you try that, you're going to get persecuted.
- 41:05That's just the natural result. Not everybody's going to like
- 41:08it. Blessed are those who are
- 41:10persecuted for righteousness sake.
- 41:15The word persecuted means to pursue, to follow after, to
- 41:19press forward. And let me tell you, the
- 41:24reaction in our life is not happiness.
- 41:28When we're persecuted, we want to defend ourselves.
- 41:31We want to do everything we can. It's it's not like, oh, how
- 41:35sweet, it's something altogether different.
- 41:39But God wants us to bring us to the place where we say, you know
- 41:43what? I'm in good company because so
- 41:49they persecuted the prophets who were before you, and that's what
- 41:52he points out later on. And then in verses 11 and 12, as
- 41:58we finish, Jesus makes it personal and he puts himself in
- 42:03the middle of the situation. Blessed are you when they revile
- 42:06and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you
- 42:11falsely, for my sake, rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for
- 42:16great is your reward in heaven. For so they persecuted the
- 42:19prophets who were before you. To revile means to defame, to
- 42:25rail upon, to chide, or to reproach, And to be lied about
- 42:31is one of the things when you know you're right.
- 42:33And to be light about and to have your character slandered,
- 42:36that's that's something that pushes buttons on the inside and
- 42:40causes your flesh to rise up like a beast.
- 42:45But how do you deal with it? How does how does heaven see it?
- 42:51I'm going through this, and I'm hurting, and I want to defend
- 42:54myself with every ounce of my being.
- 42:58And that's like the Lord is saying, let me be your defense.
- 43:03Get get Heaven's perspective, rejoice instead, and be
- 43:07exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven.
- 43:12And it reminds me of what the apostles went through in Acts
- 43:15chapter 5 the first time that they were beaten after the Lord
- 43:20rose from the dead. It says in verse 40 of chapter 5
- 43:26the council agreed with Gamalio and when they had called for the
- 43:30apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not
- 43:34speak in the name of Jesus and let them go.
- 43:38So the apostles departed from the presence of the council,
- 43:41rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his
- 43:46name. There is a special oneness with
- 43:54Jesus when we suffer shame and persecution for his name.
- 44:01A special oneness is called fellowshipping, with the
- 44:04sufferings of Christ and as much as our emotions and our feelings
- 44:12shout and scream, especially when you're beaten and your
- 44:17bones crack, because those rods were designed to cause the
- 44:24maximum damage. It could crack your spinal cord,
- 44:30your vertebraes, it could crack your ribs.
- 44:34And that pain lasts and you've got to have something to look to
- 44:38to deal with it. Jesus is telling his disciples
- 44:44here, listen, the work has to start inside by the power of the
- 44:51Holy Spirit, and it will bring you to look to God for
- 44:56everything, and then you're equipped to go out into the
- 45:00world. But just know there's a blessing
- 45:04on your life from heaven's perspective.
- 45:08Father God, we thank you for this time.
- 45:10In your word, tonight we're asking for a special move of the
- 45:16Holy Spirit upon our life on the inside.
- 45:21Lord, that you'd bring us to the place to really help us
- 45:25understand that without you were nothing.
- 45:31Help us to see, Lord, that when you work in our life, there's a
- 45:36hunger and thirst for righteousness that comes as a
- 45:38result. And I pray God that you'd fan
- 45:42that fervor back into a flame again.
- 45:45For you nothing but you Purify our hearts, Lord, and then send
- 45:54us out so that we can give a a proper picture of the heart of
- 46:00God to this dying world. And so, God, we thank you for
- 46:05this time in your word, tonight do in us what's impossible for
- 46:12us to do in ourselves. In Jesus name, Amen.
