Transcript
- 0:07Hey guys, welcome back to the astral World podcast again.
- 0:10I'm so sorry that this has been a delayed episode.
- 0:13I feel like there's been a backlog.
- 0:14I think I missed a week of uploading and it's all my fault
- 0:17because I've been so busy with other things and recording
- 0:19videos on my camera could have broke anyway enough excuses were
- 0:23back with the afterworld podcast in this week's episode or in
- 0:27this specific episode for the movie to this week.
- 0:29There is a cliff I took from a video of me. talking not an
- 0:41Autism event here on Anglesey where I live about what the
- 0:45advocacy is that I do. So autism.
- 0:47Advocacy in 2019. The where is where is it headed?
- 0:51What am I doing? How do I inspire people one of
- 0:53the things I'm doing with the astral world.
- 0:54So yeah, you might enjoy this one something a little bit
- 0:57different than what I normally do is actually taken from a live
- 0:59talk. So I hope you enjoy and if you
- 1:01want to support this podcast and donate money to the podcast hit
- 1:04that funding by a quotient is there because literally we're
- 1:07using a tiny microphone on an iPhone you can do at patreon.com
- 1:10forward slash the To be World. Thanks guys.
- 1:12Peace. I mean it's difficult because I
- 1:17can only talk for hours. Okay, so I'm going to condense
- 1:20everything into a 20-minute kind of presentation.
- 1:23I've done this presentation, maybe twice or three times four
- 1:26is already so actually pretty cool.
- 1:29So yeah, I'm done and this is my brand or like I don't know what
- 1:33you want to call them a professional name is that ask me
- 1:35world. I have a diagnosis of Asperger
- 1:38syndrome ADHD OCD and dyslexia, and I'm also an international
- 1:41best-selling author and three languages and I currently four.
- 1:46Like what I do for work. And advocacy is I YouTuber or
- 1:49social media influence where I influence educate people about
- 1:53like my personal life experiences and things like
- 1:55that, which is kind of cool. So like I said call the ask me
- 1:57world my channels currently 71 almost seventy two thousand
- 2:00subscribers, which is crazy. I got about 1.6 million
- 2:04individual views every single 28 day cycle, which is crazy good
- 2:08and it's crazy good because of the amount of people who are
- 2:10watching again educated and learning things, which is really
- 2:13really awesome. One of the things I'm trying to
- 2:15do is Build Authority through what I'm doing so that we can
- 2:20then try and and take something that's like, you know, an army
- 2:23of people online who have a condition or want to better
- 2:27educate the world with the condition and then take that to
- 2:30more political aspects like rather than just having autism
- 2:32our let's make it a standard, you know like that.
- 2:34Lots of really bugs me. So that's one of the things
- 2:35we're trying to do also have ADHD, so I'm talking really
- 2:38really really really fast. I'm very very sorry and I don't
- 2:41have caffeine or sugar anymore, but it's still it's difficult to
- 2:45slow down. So anyway, Condense everything
- 2:46to 20 20 minutes or so. So you guys can have some Q&A as
- 2:49well also. So yeah, I'm basically talk
- 2:52about my experiences of living with ASD online.
- 2:55That's what I do on YouTube. I upload like videos every
- 2:58single week. My book is my book at the best
- 3:02seller Baca got out in the US and the UK is about kind of my
- 3:06experiences and how you Star Wars to kind of help.
- 3:09I don't know feel more normal in society.
- 3:12It's cause it's a cool book. Anyway enough of my rambling of
- 3:16My self promotion. So is this going to work if I
- 3:18press I know is that I have to click it.
- 3:20It's going to do it do it. Hey, so YouTube Okay, cool.
- 3:25So, like I said, I'm kind of well known for my YouTube
- 3:29advocacy. So what I do is I upload videos
- 3:31on YouTube every single week talking about cool fun life
- 3:34experiences, but all the you know things that pull and what I
- 3:37do is I get a chance to put videos that have myself that you
- 3:41know, all my life experiences things that I never realized
- 3:43will valuable to people all the times I've lived.
- 3:46Because you know, I've done a lot in 32 years and and the
- 3:50people just absolutely love it and educates so many people it's
- 3:53phenomenal and the amount of people that I've helped change
- 3:57their lives, which is crazy. It's super super awesome.
- 3:59That's why I do I love doing it. I've worked very closely with
- 4:02the national autistic Society also ambitious about autism and
- 4:06some other random companies like u.s.
- 4:08USA based companies don't have anything standard in the u.s.
- 4:11Kind of like a national system Society.
- 4:13So yeah, I work at all these kind of companies and one of the
- 4:16reason why I chose YouTube because YouTube has a user
- 4:19platform of 1 billion 300 million active users.
- 4:22And that's incredible. What a lot of people to reach.
- 4:24So a lot of people use advocacy on Facebook and try and reach
- 4:27out on other social media platforms.
- 4:28But YouTube is the second largest search engine in the
- 4:31world next to Google and also uses the Google smart brain
- 4:33algorithmic techniques. So that's pretty pretty awesome.
- 4:36That's why I use YouTube to do it.
- 4:37So yeah, it's cool. It comes with issues actually
- 4:41though because I'm on YouTube all the time.
- 4:42I literally went to Ellie in June last year.
- 4:46Do a networking thing for YouTube and it's huge conference
- 4:49called VidCon. So I had a guy come with me as
- 4:51my assistant helps me travel because I have issues with
- 4:53traveling and things like that. And as soon as I stepped off the
- 4:55plane going through TSA in La something like oh my God, I've
- 4:58seen on YouTube blah blah and so it presents itself with
- 5:01interesting situations where I like to distance myself from an
- 5:04audience because I'm sorry my computer recording videos, but
- 5:06then also when I'm in the public people want to come to talk to
- 5:09me about my advocacy and that's kind of weird because I'd you
- 5:12know, I did that online so I wouldn't have to speak to your
- 5:15face. Anyway enough about that YouTube
- 5:18is really interesting because as Open Access freedom of speech
- 5:21which is very very powerful, especially if we're doing things
- 5:24from a personal perspective. There's no kind of closed book
- 5:26it off to follow any kind of bizarre guidelines.
- 5:28Okay, unless you like you're stupid and filming silly things,
- 5:32you know, there are guidelines for that.
- 5:33But typically you can say what you want and freedom of speech
- 5:36and you don't really get judged to get haters, but he is
- 5:37everywhere you got to double all the way but the idea of YouTube
- 5:40is that it's open access free and it builds something quite
- 5:43interesting which is community. So what I do, My channel is I
- 5:46also build a community of people who can help other people.
- 5:50So what I wanted to do is when I first started advocacy people
- 5:54would like email McDonald about this.
- 5:55Well, this will do this. So I got about 10,000 emails
- 5:57every single month and I'm like I get to 10,000 emails a month
- 6:00or so was I God so what I needed was a system for people to help
- 6:03each other because that's how I believe a society will push
- 6:06yourself forward. So I said, I have Facebook
- 6:08groups and I also set up like YouTube Community groups on
- 6:13YouTube so that My that works phenomenally.
- 6:17Well, and one of the one of the biggest things my channel does
- 6:21is so there's two things educate people in certain aspects of
- 6:25autism or any kind of like Spectrum condition ADHD and
- 6:31stuff. We are also deeply want talking
- 6:32about those things depression anxiety.
- 6:33All those lovely things that come with it and it educate
- 6:38those people in those areas and it also helps people find
- 6:40diagnosis because I did a video on like a step-by-step guide
- 6:43like how you know, because that's one of the biggest People
- 6:46say oh, you know, I believe I'm on the Spectrum or whatever and
- 6:48then they say, oh I do I go from here.
- 6:50So that's one of the things that kind of guide them through this
- 6:52process, which is powerful. But the second thing I try to do
- 6:56because obviously a large portion of my audience people
- 6:59who are on the Spectrum I try to inspire so like I want to be
- 7:04this like cause for inspiration to empower people on the
- 7:06Spectrum to do something super super awesome.
- 7:08So I left school with no qualifications because obviously
- 7:13I was in school in the 90s and let's face.
- 7:15Face it the 90s was a terrible time for supporting people with
- 7:19ASD. So I was basically in the
- 7:22additional needs part of the school, but it was terrible, you
- 7:26know, like it for mathematics. We have to Circle tennis racket
- 7:28to stuff. It was really really
- 7:29unstimulating and terrible and I got in trouble a lot because
- 7:32it's a tell the teachers why they were wrong a lot of the
- 7:33time with the history and science nonsense because they
- 7:36were actually wrong and it's weird and I realized that a lot
- 7:38of primary school teachers don't even have a degree in science as
- 7:41on a teaching science. That's quite interesting.
- 7:42So leaving school with no complete no qualifications of Ro
- 7:46I decided that I was getting into the sump like every with
- 7:49ASD kind of get into this the rut where they feel kind of
- 7:51detached from reality a little bit and then you think oh, you
- 7:55know, it's difficult to get into this kind of social Norm routing
- 7:58where people do this again University and I go partying and
- 8:00all crazy and it's cool and they'll you know and all this
- 8:02weird Rat Race nonsense. So I was like hugging us and I
- 8:05got us a really low part then I thought well, I really like to
- 8:08focus on some crazy stuff. You ask me anything about 9/11.
- 8:11I know it's really more than gross.
- 8:12But I know everything there is to know about 9/11.
- 8:14We actually did a presentation. On a one this like a competition
- 8:17for putting together the factual knowledge on the scientific data
- 8:21in the 911 dust, which is really boring but very very exciting so
- 8:25I know everything about it and I realized that I could actually
- 8:28hyper focus on something for a long time a lot about its that
- 8:31was like, oh my dyslexic, right? So I've got like an attempt in
- 8:37an inkblot and walk across the page, but I also have a book
- 8:41out. So one of these things I wanted
- 8:42to do is change my perspective and my viewpoint and life.
- 8:45Being like this person who is very low instead of low on
- 8:48self-esteem to push myself forward to doing crazy cool
- 8:51things. So the first thing I did was I
- 8:54wanted to set goals and it is what I try to do to inspire
- 8:57people with ASD is say like if you have a goal on idea you want
- 9:01to do something will set your mind to it and do it and I'm
- 9:04like living proof of that because I played music for many
- 9:07years the first thing I did I wanted to play music and get a
- 9:10wrap it out. Right so I decided that I wanted
- 9:12a CD out in Japan. They don't know why it was just
- 9:14a cool idea the time because Japan is a cool music scene.
- 9:16So when you nobody in Japan can't speak a word of Japanese
- 9:19and managed to get my band's album signed to a label in Japan
- 9:22released got this number five in the charts in Japan, which is
- 9:25crazy which is super cool. So that was one thing all the
- 9:27way then the next thing was leaving school and or
- 9:29qualifications was crazy, but I always loved science and I
- 9:32always loved learning about things.
- 9:33So I decided to do a degree in chemistry.
- 9:36I don't know why I'd kind of not regret it, but when I realized
- 9:39what the hardest degree probably do, it was interesting with the
- 9:42workload for timing because obviously it didn't interact.
- 9:45With my bad sleeping habits, so I did a degree in chemistry and
- 9:48now obviously I'm a chemist which is why interesting but
- 9:51obviously having no qualifications to go into the
- 9:52green chemistry is quite fascinating for anybody and then
- 9:56with YouTube. So one of the things I wanted to
- 9:59do, it was create a job as well because I've worked in different
- 10:02kind of factors and I've always kind of had to leave because
- 10:05I've had emotional issues. So it's really embarrassing to
- 10:08go to work and then you have this huge meltdown and I like
- 10:10what's wrong and I have no idea so they're like, okay so then my
- 10:12doctors like you can't work more than this many hours and think
- 10:15And who's going to give somebody a job for two days a week?
- 10:17And how was I going to pay the bill?
- 10:18So I realized that I had to create something creative for
- 10:22myself so I could you know be this person who lives in society
- 10:26country sought society and isn't kind of like depressed all the
- 10:28time. So YouTube was that platform for
- 10:30me, but I had to learn about it. So going from no subscribers.
- 10:34Don't do nothing on YouTube and watching like countless hours of
- 10:38people how to use algorithmic SEO which is how you like search
- 10:42engine optimization on YouTube. How do you get your channel to
- 10:45come up first? YouTube so people see your
- 10:46videos and it grows basically I say idea so I watched all these
- 10:50like channels on these TV shows on how to do it in on these
- 10:53experts tell me about SEO. Excuse me.
- 10:56I'm one of the best things was and this is crazy in like
- 10:59January of 2018. I was watching the show called
- 11:03video influencers where these guys talk you through how to
- 11:06make your channel cool and he's got these guys the expert then I
- 11:09got really obsessed with it, like everybody else for that.
- 11:11History gets really obsessed with something and I was like,
- 11:13oh my God, I love this algorithmic.
- 11:15SEO it's mathematics. It's just amazing.
- 11:18So I just completely obsessed with it for ages.
- 11:20My girlfriend hated it. She still does because I'm still
- 11:22obsessed with SEO marketing. And so and then I went to LA to
- 11:27this VidCon and the irony was I was actually interviewed by that
- 11:30channel. So from January, I was watching
- 11:32him and then in June I was interviewed on their Channel as
- 11:34an expert telling them how to grow their Channel which is
- 11:36quite interesting side exponential growth.
- 11:38So all that stuff. I find super super interesting
- 11:41and realizing that like, I'm just like anybody else on the
- 11:44structure. I'm so there's No limit to what
- 11:46you can do. So the inspiration part I love
- 11:48doing that. I call the awesome super power.
- 11:50So I try to get people to the so cool image isn't a stolen.
- 11:56So yeah, I didn't make this so it's cool.
- 11:59So I yeah, I try to get people to use autism has a superpower
- 12:02because a lot of people find it as it's really negative thing
- 12:05and it does impact people's lives and negatively I guess and
- 12:07I feel that from time to time but if you focus on the
- 12:10negative, it was a downward spiral.
- 12:12So what I try and do is I try and be as upbeat as possible
- 12:14videos to get Younger people or anybody who is surrounded by ASD
- 12:19or involved with it. It's a realize that there's
- 12:21super good potential. I because people say to me like,
- 12:23ah, you know, I've got no shot. No good focus in life, and I got
- 12:28no way of getting a job as a what your interests are gaming.
- 12:31I said, you know, there's a huge just to actually making videos
- 12:35online streaming yourself playing games crazy.
- 12:37They make way more money than I do and I like what and I say
- 12:40game testers create your own game.
- 12:41Why don't you do a degree where you learn how to code games be a
- 12:45game? Koda, why don't you be a
- 12:46graphical artist for games. There's so many different
- 12:49opportunities for people like if you're the best if you're the
- 12:51person who knows most about Pokemon that I love Pokemon, but
- 12:55if you're a person who's your main obsessions Pokemon what -
- 12:58like 9/11 then you could like really dig down and get
- 13:02everything in this know about Pokemon a be the best Channel on
- 13:04YouTube about Pokemon and people pay you to do it.
- 13:06So people kind of have this Focus that if you're not like
- 13:09working in a shop or an office or like going to building side,
- 13:12then you don't really have a career ahead of you which is
- 13:15Nonsense on moving forward especially with people with
- 13:18digital Age Technology and Millennials who are on the
- 13:21Spectrum who love technology. This is the coolest way to do it
- 13:24and I love doing that and I Empower so many people to do it.
- 13:28And yeah, it's just kind of like, I don't know why I find
- 13:32that part for filling also working with the national
- 13:34autistic society and other people raising awareness and
- 13:37raising understanding and the idea of the channel or the
- 13:39double the work that I do is like I said, I Empower people to
- 13:43use something positively and like push him Force being
- 13:46awesome, but I also educate people from real life
- 13:48experiences. So without further Ado I
- 13:50hopefully have rambled on for too many hours that moving
- 13:54forward in the future. What I'm doing is I'm going to
- 13:57try and mobile mobilize my online presence and that
- 14:02Authority have online to take it to like they'll societal levels
- 14:06and trying to change how things are and the last thing I'll say
- 14:09on that is basically how I view it is that if you go back to
- 14:11like the, you know, the 50s and the 40's wheelchair access and
- 14:13stores with never mandatory and if you had a A wheelchair then
- 14:16I'll get it for you. But like now it's like oh my
- 14:19goodness in that phase where there's no neurodiverse kind of
- 14:22like put shops and stuff at accommodating for people on the
- 14:24Spectrum and which really annoys me and they use like terrible
- 14:27lighting and it is all set up really really bad.
- 14:30And if you think that one in 60 people in the US and one in 100
- 14:33people in the UK is probably a bit more now have a diagnosis of
- 14:36ASD. That's a lot of people your kind
- 14:38of like leaving out of taking care of that.
- 14:41So that's one of things I'm going to try and do is move that
- 14:44move the times for Word and get people to really change how they
- 14:48are. So anyway, that's me, and I'm
- 14:50done. I'm done.
- 14:51Thank you for listening to me ramble on about nothing for
- 14:53ages. That's a cool picture, isn't it?
- 14:55Alright. Thanks a lot.
