- 0:00Speaker 1: And Football at four is powered by the Inside the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Birds Podcast. It is brought to you by the Fanatics
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sportsbook at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. Don't forget,
- 0:09Speaker 1: We'll be there on Monday, and of course we will
- 0:12Speaker 1: be getting you ready for the Eagles and the Packers.
- 0:14Speaker 1: It's been an interesting week for the Eagles, even though
- 0:17Speaker 1: the bye week is here. They made a trade. They're
- 0:19Speaker 1: in trade Rumers, and of course there's a trade deadline
- 0:23Speaker 1: looming still. Andrew to Checko is in today for today's
- 0:27Speaker 1: Football at four from the Inside the Birds podcast Inside
- 0:31Speaker 1: the Birds dot Com. Let's take a look at his
- 0:34Speaker 1: thoughts on this trade, how it will all shake out.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Michael Carter is in the nest. We'll talk more about
- 0:40Speaker 1: that right now and more with the great Andrew to
- 0:43Speaker 1: Checko from Inside the Birds dot Com as he joins
- 0:46Speaker 1: us here for a Friday edition of Football at for Andrew.
- 0:50Speaker 1: What's going on? Man?
- 0:52Speaker 2: Hey, Mike, how are you? Man?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Good to be with you as always, good to get
- 0:55Speaker 1: you on this happy hour Friday. And you know the
- 0:58Speaker 1: Eagles have a bye week, but man, they always seem
- 1:00Speaker 1: to make news no matter what. You got the trade
- 1:02Speaker 1: deadline on Tuesday, but Howie Roseman active this week, Michael
- 1:06Speaker 1: Carter is in here. Give me your read on this
- 1:10Speaker 1: Carter move, how he fits in, and what it means
- 1:13Speaker 1: for the Eagle secondary potentially moving forward.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Well, I've always liked the player coming out of Duke,
- 1:19Speaker 2: A fifth round pick, and he's pretty sticky in coverage.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I sort of followed his career a little bit, but
- 1:24Speaker 2: he's primarily played mostly inside, and I guess the assumption
- 1:30Speaker 2: is that the Eagles are going to give him a
- 1:32Speaker 2: long look inside. I believe eighty five percent of his
- 1:35Speaker 2: snaps have come inside in his career, But I wouldn't
- 1:38Speaker 2: necessarily say that that's the definitive plan, right, I mean,
- 1:41Speaker 2: obviously that's something that he's very accustomed to doing. But
- 1:45Speaker 2: I think it more so gives the Eagles some optionality
- 1:48Speaker 2: as to how they want to deploy him. Could they
- 1:50Speaker 2: put him outside and a pinch? Could he add just
- 1:53Speaker 2: simply some more depth. But I think when you look
- 1:56Speaker 2: at what the Eagles hatten prior to the addition, they
- 1:58Speaker 2: didn't have any definitive answer at the Nickel position if
- 2:02Speaker 2: they were to have to move Cooper Degene. You look
- 2:05Speaker 2: at Parry Nickerson, who's no longer on the fifty three
- 2:08Speaker 2: Mac McWilliams. Drew mccoba can play it, but he's a
- 2:12Speaker 2: safety and he's really mastering that position. So I think
- 2:15Speaker 2: that his natural fit here will be inside, and I
- 2:19Speaker 2: think it could be more so situational where there are
- 2:22Speaker 2: times where you might want to have Cooper Degene outside
- 2:25Speaker 2: and Michael Carter the second inside, and more often than that,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I think you want to keep Cooper inside because of
- 2:31Speaker 2: what he can do the open field, tackling, the ability
- 2:34Speaker 2: to play the run and things like that. You don't
- 2:36Speaker 2: want to take away what makes him so good.
- 2:39Speaker 1: You know. One of the things is everybody just assumes
- 2:41Speaker 1: Andrew that, oh they'll loose move Cooper outside, and I
- 2:43Speaker 1: think a lot of people think he can handle that position.
- 2:46Speaker 1: What is your thoughts as Cooper Degene as a strictly
- 2:49Speaker 1: outside corner.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Cooper Degen can do anything that's asked
- 2:54Speaker 2: of them. If you look at look up football player
- 2:57Speaker 2: in the dictionary, Cooper Degene's pictures going to be right there.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But I think to put him outside would be taking
- 3:04Speaker 2: away the skill set and what he can provide in
- 3:07Speaker 2: totality and moving him around and creating different matchups that
- 3:12Speaker 2: you like and you want to put him on there.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But also I go back to what he's able to
- 3:16Speaker 2: provide from the nickel position, where he is in the
- 3:19Speaker 2: middle of things. He's in the mix. He can make tackles,
- 3:22Speaker 2: he can blitz, he can do all sorts of things.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And in today's NFL playing an inside corner position, that's
- 3:29Speaker 2: a starting position in the NFL. But it also has increased.
- 3:34Speaker 2: It's been more increased emphasis and responsibility because you're defending
- 3:38Speaker 2: players like Mike Evans. Not only is Mike Evans playing
- 3:41Speaker 2: on the outside, but he plays on the inside. That's
- 3:43Speaker 2: just an example. But I just think, well, Cooper Degene
- 3:46Speaker 2: can give the Eagles. To put him strictly on the
- 3:49Speaker 2: outside would be limiting what he can provide in terms
- 3:52Speaker 2: of his overall skill set.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Talking with Andrew to Checko Football at four here on
- 3:57Speaker 1: a happy hour Friday. No Eagles game this week, but
- 4:00Speaker 1: of course they're getting ready for the Packers. We'll talk
- 4:01Speaker 1: a little bit about what's going on with this Eagle defense.
- 4:04Speaker 1: You got Michael Carter in here, So if you put
- 4:07Speaker 1: a Michael Carter slot, Cooper Egene outside is at a
- 4:12Speaker 1: better configuration than Cooper Degen in his current role and
- 4:16Speaker 1: say a Dori Jackson and Kaylee Ringo, do you think
- 4:19Speaker 1: that that's a significant upgrade, an upgrade or a lateral move.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I don't know that it is a significant upgrade, because
- 4:29Speaker 2: I mean, I just think Cooper Degene inside is such
- 4:33Speaker 2: a dominant presence and he provides a lot of different
- 4:37Speaker 2: optionality that the Eagles can do defensively, and to kind
- 4:40Speaker 2: of expand on this outside, I mean, and again it's
- 4:43Speaker 2: the sample size is small, but Kilee Ringo has performed
- 4:48Speaker 2: adequately enough over the past couple of games against the
- 4:51Speaker 2: Vikings and the Giants that maybe you want to give
- 4:54Speaker 2: him a longer look out there. He's a younger player
- 4:56Speaker 2: and you don't necessarily want to, like you want to
- 5:00Speaker 2: give him the benefit of doubt or make sure that
- 5:01Speaker 2: you're leaving no stone unturned. And also Jacorey and Bennett's
- 5:06Speaker 2: coming back as well, that's another reinforcement if the Eagles
- 5:10Speaker 2: really don't know what he can do. He played just
- 5:12Speaker 2: twenty four defensive snaps. Vic Vangio even said incomplete when
- 5:16Speaker 2: evaluating Jacoreyan Bennett, and I think Jacoreyan Bennett can offer
- 5:20Speaker 2: starting upside and you could do that without having without
- 5:24Speaker 2: the expense of moving Cooper Degene. So I don't know
- 5:26Speaker 2: that that's necessarily the best configuration, putting Carter at Nickel
- 5:32Speaker 2: and then moving Cooper Degene outside. But until we see
- 5:35Speaker 2: what that looks like, it's kind of hard to reach
- 5:38Speaker 2: that determination.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You see him at all possibly getting involved at the
- 5:41Speaker 1: safety position. He did play some safety at college. I mean,
- 5:44Speaker 1: is that a possibility or is that kind of passed?
- 5:47Speaker 1: You know, not where you're looking at with him.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Perhaps, but I don't really view him as a safety.
- 5:52Speaker 2: And Drew mccouba barely comes off the field reblanket ship
- 5:55Speaker 2: plays pretty much every snap as well, so there's not
- 5:57Speaker 2: a lot of room or options for him to get
- 6:01Speaker 2: in there. And I just don't really view him at
- 6:03Speaker 2: that andy five pounds. But it does give the Eagles
- 6:07Speaker 2: some flexibility in how they want to deploy their personnel potentially,
- 6:11Speaker 2: But that's not really how I scattered him coming out
- 6:14Speaker 2: of the draft, nor do I really view him as
- 6:16Speaker 2: that right now.
- 6:17Speaker 1: All right, let's you know, the trade deadline's coming up.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Do they need an edge rusher? You got Nolan Smith
- 6:25Speaker 1: coming back, you got Brandon Graham, you know, coming out
- 6:29Speaker 1: of retirement. You got azizo Za Lari. If you want
- 6:31Speaker 1: to give him more steps, you got josh Usha, you
- 6:34Speaker 1: got jaylexs Hunt. Is this a team that needs to
- 6:37Speaker 1: be pounding the pavement picking up the phone to add
- 6:40Speaker 1: another edge rusher.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Well, it's not as much of a necessity now that
- 6:45Speaker 2: there's reinforcements on the way. But if I had to
- 6:48Speaker 2: kind of rank where the Eagles need to address certain areas,
- 6:52Speaker 2: edge would still be number one for me. Then it
- 6:53Speaker 2: would be reserve offensive line help, and then it would
- 6:56Speaker 2: be corner. But I say edge because you have a
- 7:00Speaker 2: number of different players there, and against the Giants they
- 7:03Speaker 2: were able to get home. They got home five times,
- 7:05Speaker 2: but only one of those times was from edge rusher
- 7:07Speaker 2: josh Uche had the play there that got overturned. But
- 7:11Speaker 2: you never want to make too much off of one
- 7:13Speaker 2: game against the Giants, which have a relatively poorous offensive line.
- 7:17Speaker 2: You have to take into account the full body of work,
- 7:19Speaker 2: and Eagles have not been able to really get home,
- 7:22Speaker 2: which has necessitated vic Vangil having to send a lot
- 7:25Speaker 2: more pressure than he ordinarily has in his career at
- 7:29Speaker 2: a necessity because you're not able to get home with
- 7:31Speaker 2: traditional pressure and I also think adding another player to
- 7:34Speaker 2: the mix there, maybe one that has more experience and
- 7:37Speaker 2: that has slots into maybe that late twenty year old
- 7:41Speaker 2: range where he's played a lot. It adds experience for one,
- 7:45Speaker 2: but it also allows the other players that are that
- 7:48Speaker 2: you've mentioned to slot into those roles that they're more
- 7:51Speaker 2: ideally suited and don't necessarily have to take on such
- 7:54Speaker 2: a large workload. Like a Jay Looks Hunt. You can
- 7:56Speaker 2: reduce some of his snaps. Nolan Smith when he comes back.
- 7:59Speaker 2: The way he plays the game, it really lends itself
- 8:02Speaker 2: to being injured. Maybe you don't need to afford him
- 8:04Speaker 2: the lion's share of the snaps, and and everyone else
- 8:07Speaker 2: can kind of step in and play those situational roles
- 8:10Speaker 2: and it just keeps everyone fresh. And that's just kind
- 8:12Speaker 2: of the way that I'm viewing that right now.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So when you hear these possible, you know, three first
- 8:19Speaker 1: round picks for a guy like Miles Garrett, you know
- 8:21Speaker 1: we all kind of chuckle. Charles Robinson's not some you
- 8:23Speaker 1: know blogger out there throwing these out there. Do you
- 8:26Speaker 1: kind of say that's interesting? Do you don't take it serious?
- 8:30Speaker 1: How do you make what do you make of that
- 8:32Speaker 1: whole situation that kind of you know, took over yesterday
- 8:36Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Well, Hallie Roseman's going to always explore every avenue, especially
- 8:41Speaker 2: if a player is available, and three first round pick
- 8:44Speaker 2: sounds about right for someone like Miles Garrett. But I
- 8:47Speaker 2: just don't know if the Eagles will be willing to
- 8:51Speaker 2: you know, I guess acquiesced to that kind of asking
- 8:55Speaker 2: price despite the fact that Miles Garrett's probably the best
- 8:58Speaker 2: defensive player in the NFL. You play him on that defense, yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 2: and you'd be hard pressed to find a team that's
- 9:04Speaker 2: gonna be able to contend with that. I just think
- 9:07Speaker 2: that might be a little rich considering where the Eagles
- 9:09Speaker 2: are right now, But you can never brule out. I
- 9:11Speaker 2: always say never say never with with Howie Rosen that
- 9:14Speaker 2: the trenches and pass rush help is something that they've
- 9:17Speaker 2: always traditionally been willing to an exception for. But I
- 9:23Speaker 2: just don't know if everything's going to a ligne in
- 9:25Speaker 2: the sense that it would make him a feasible option
- 9:29Speaker 2: for the phoot offhi Eagle.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Real quick, before we move on to some other things
- 9:33Speaker 1: on this thing, would Asante Samuel Junior interest you at all?
- 9:38Speaker 2: No, he would not and and again when I look
- 9:41Speaker 2: at this Mike, it's a name, it's a household name,
- 9:45Speaker 2: but it's not a definitive upgrade over what the Eagles
- 9:48Speaker 2: already have in a Dorri Jackson, Jacory and Bennett and
- 9:51Speaker 2: Kieley Ringo. So if you're going to bring somebody in
- 9:53Speaker 2: and cornerbacks being all of a sudden a little bit
- 9:56Speaker 2: crowded there, I think you have to always bring in
- 9:59Speaker 2: someone that you know or you have a strong sense
- 10:02Speaker 2: that's going to add a significant upgrade. And I don't
- 10:05Speaker 2: know that he can do that. He has the injury
- 10:07Speaker 2: that the neck injury that he's now overcome. But even
- 10:10Speaker 2: you know, even when he was playing his best with
- 10:13Speaker 2: the Chargers, I still don't know. I mean, you don't
- 10:16Speaker 2: even know what you have in Ja, Corey and Bennett.
- 10:18Speaker 2: So I think you owe it to the player. You
- 10:20Speaker 2: owe it to you know, you brought him in here
- 10:22Speaker 2: for a reason. Maybe give him a longer look before
- 10:26Speaker 2: you bring in someone else from the outside and all
- 10:28Speaker 2: of a sudden they have to learn the defense and
- 10:29Speaker 2: it takes them a while to even get implemented into it.
- 10:34Speaker 1: What is your view of how this Dean Campbell thing
- 10:39Speaker 1: is going to kind of shake out post by.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's going to be situational. If you
- 10:44Speaker 2: see a team that's run heavy, you're likely going to
- 10:47Speaker 2: want Nikobe Dean on the field. He's so effective playing
- 10:50Speaker 2: the run and attacking the line of scrimmage and bringing
- 10:52Speaker 2: that physical presence that I think that they've lacked at
- 10:55Speaker 2: times this year. But you also it's a double edged
- 10:59Speaker 2: sword because you don't want to take John Campbell off
- 11:02Speaker 2: the field, who's made notable strides every week at off
- 11:05Speaker 2: ball linebacker, and he's more athletic and he can do
- 11:08Speaker 2: some things in space that Nikobe can't do. He has
- 11:10Speaker 2: the length and he can take running backs up the
- 11:13Speaker 2: sideline and cover them. He can match up against tight ends,
- 11:16Speaker 2: and that's not really Nikobe's wheelhouse. He can do it,
- 11:18Speaker 2: but his skill set is something that John Campbell isn't
- 11:21Speaker 2: necessarily as proficient in, and that's attacking the run and
- 11:25Speaker 2: just seeing things at a split second and making those decisions.
- 11:29Speaker 2: And that comes with experience. But Nakobe is so highly
- 11:31Speaker 2: intelligent that he really is the quarterback of the defense
- 11:34Speaker 2: when he's out there. So I imagine that you're going
- 11:36Speaker 2: to see them try to strike that balance. But you
- 11:39Speaker 2: have to make sure that if you're the Eagles, it's
- 11:41Speaker 2: not the expense of the growth and development of John Campbell.
- 11:44Speaker 2: But Nikobe's still going to be in the mix and
- 11:46Speaker 2: played thirty three snaps the other day. Vic Vango is
- 11:49Speaker 2: a big na Kobe Dean guy, and when he's out
- 11:52Speaker 2: on the field, no one can dispute the fact that
- 11:54Speaker 2: they're playing with a little bit more swagger and they
- 11:57Speaker 2: have some juice. So I still think that they're going
- 11:59Speaker 2: to have to they have to find a way to
- 12:01Speaker 2: balance that against Green Bay, who they'll spread you out.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I think that's going to be a big jahat Campbell game.
- 12:07Speaker 2: But until we see what the thought process is from
- 12:10Speaker 2: Vic Vangio and we get a little bit further down
- 12:12Speaker 2: the road here, it's kind of hard to decipher it.
- 12:15Speaker 1: All right, a few more with Andrew and checkout today's
- 12:17Speaker 1: Football at four Eagles at the buye. They do have
- 12:19Speaker 1: a trade deadline on Tuesday. We'll see if Howie Roseman
- 12:22Speaker 1: gets something done by the time andrews back here next week.
- 12:24Speaker 1: On Football at four, the offense ran the ball. They
- 12:28Speaker 1: had their best day by far. You had two hundred
- 12:30Speaker 1: yard rushers. It's obviously not just the running backs. Is
- 12:33Speaker 1: the offensive line coming around? Is it getting healthier? And
- 12:37Speaker 1: I know you wrote an article over at Inside the
- 12:39Speaker 1: Birds dot com about Brett Toath. He was highly much
- 12:42Speaker 1: maligned for his performance as before probably had his best
- 12:45Speaker 1: game of his career the other day. Adam almost described
- 12:49Speaker 1: it as like an outer body experience about how good
- 12:51Speaker 1: he kind of played in that game. But as the
- 12:53Speaker 1: offensive line now settling into this.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Offense, yeah, I mean, I think you see difference that
- 13:00Speaker 2: when you have a healthy center who's able to climb
- 13:03Speaker 2: to the second level and not be limited by injuries.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Cam Jurgens is clearly playing through the recovery process of
- 13:11Speaker 2: that offseason back surgery, and it's going to take him
- 13:13Speaker 2: some time before he's going to look like himself. I
- 13:16Speaker 2: don't know that it's as simple as saying that putting
- 13:18Speaker 2: a healthy center in there is all of a sudden
- 13:21Speaker 2: spring boarded that rushing attack. But I really do believe
- 13:24Speaker 2: that when Jordan my Lotta said that they were just
- 13:26Speaker 2: a hair off, he's been saying that for a number
- 13:28Speaker 2: of weeks now, that they were able to kind of
- 13:30Speaker 2: hone in on certain aspects of the run game and
- 13:33Speaker 2: the blocking schemes. I did a lot more outside runs
- 13:35Speaker 2: this time to free things up, and Landon Dickerson looked
- 13:39Speaker 2: a lot healthier than he has off season, and that
- 13:42Speaker 2: was a big key because I thought that he had
- 13:44Speaker 2: his best game of the season by far. So there's
- 13:47Speaker 2: a number of different things that I think contributed to it.
- 13:50Speaker 2: And I'm curious to see whether the Eagles are a
- 13:52Speaker 2: little bit more gradual and how they're approaching the injury,
- 13:56Speaker 2: the knee injury now to Cam Jurgens, and maybe they're
- 13:59Speaker 2: more willing to go to Brett Toath again and for
- 14:02Speaker 2: another week if that means that Cam Jurgen's will be
- 14:05Speaker 2: closer to being at full strength, and then for that
- 14:08Speaker 2: stretch run you have a relatively healthy offensive line.
- 14:11Speaker 1: All right, we'll leave on this. Obviously, AJ Brown's name
- 14:16Speaker 1: comes up a lot you're around him in the locker room.
- 14:20Speaker 1: A lot of people just feel like his social media
- 14:22Speaker 1: persona is like, you know, he doesn't want to be here,
- 14:25Speaker 1: but you don't ever get the feeling inside that locker
- 14:27Speaker 1: room that he is like a malcontent or doesn't want
- 14:30Speaker 1: to be here. I mean, am I reading this right?
- 14:32Speaker 1: I feel like everybody wants to read this guy's social
- 14:35Speaker 1: media and then make an assessment on him. To me,
- 14:38Speaker 1: this stuff is just because people are bored and don't
- 14:40Speaker 1: have much to talk about during the bye week, that
- 14:42Speaker 1: the Eagles have almost zero interest in trading him unless
- 14:46Speaker 1: they were absolutely knocked off their rocker.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Your assessments correct, Mike. I've never been of the mindset
- 14:54Speaker 2: that he was unhappy about being a photolph Eagle, that
- 14:57Speaker 2: he was as the word that he use malc And
- 15:00Speaker 2: that's not the case at all. I think a lot,
- 15:03Speaker 2: probably too much is made and trying to decipher his
- 15:05Speaker 2: social media post. Is he frustrated? Of course Aj is.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And there's a great article by my buddy Brooks Cabino
- 15:12Speaker 2: on The Athletic that really speaks into it, really pulls
- 15:15Speaker 2: the curtain back into the mindset and behind the scenes
- 15:19Speaker 2: about what makes AJ Brown tick. He's a competitor first
- 15:23Speaker 2: and foremost. He loves the thrill of the game that
- 15:26Speaker 2: he gets when he's able to dominate an opposing cornerback.
- 15:29Speaker 2: And he likes being heavily involved and a big reason
- 15:32Speaker 2: why the Eagles are winning football games. And so when
- 15:35Speaker 2: he's not that, I guess that's something that he takes
- 15:39Speaker 2: exception to, or maybe that's a little strong, but maybe
- 15:42Speaker 2: something that he isn't necessarily keen on, and you see
- 15:45Speaker 2: some of those posts or whatever it is. I don't
- 15:48Speaker 2: try to to be coded or anything like that. But
- 15:51Speaker 2: he's a very good teammate. Every time I see him,
- 15:53Speaker 2: he's very much and there's the camaraderie there amongst his teammates,
- 15:59Speaker 2: and he's very well like and there's a reason why
- 16:02Speaker 2: he's a captain.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Now.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Do I agree with the way that he handles everything,
- 16:05Speaker 2: Absolutely not. Do you never want to be a quote
- 16:07Speaker 2: unquote distraction in that sense, especially off some wins. But
- 16:11Speaker 2: he is the competitor at the highest degree, and I
- 16:14Speaker 2: think a lot of what makes him great, I would argue,
- 16:17Speaker 2: is his willingness or the way that he performs and
- 16:22Speaker 2: trains for those moments. He wants the ball in critical moments.
- 16:25Speaker 2: He wants that pressure, and he's different. I think he's
