- 1:05Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other Alcoholics
- 1:09are chiefs of Brady. Thank you, Larry, and thank you,
- 1:13everyone, for having me in this chair.
- 1:17Yeah. How did it all begin?
- 1:20Well, you know, I was 19 years of old, 19 years of age and I, I
- 1:28lived in a, in a little house just around the corner from the
- 1:32pub. And for whatever reason, I'm not
- 1:35actually sure why, I decided to get up and go to the pub and
- 1:43have a drink. I don't know why, I really don't
- 1:46know why, but I did. I didn't drink very much on that
- 1:49first night. I had a couple of pints of beer.
- 1:53But you know, the effect that it had on my mind was unbelievable.
- 1:59All the anger that I had stored up over the years and the
- 2:03fearfulness and the anxiety and so forth, it's just disappeared,
- 2:09just disappeared. And I felt wonderful.
- 2:13This is magic stuff. And I wandered back home.
- 2:18It was just around the corner from the pub and went to bed and
- 2:22had a fantastic night's sleep. You know, I never slept so well
- 2:26in my whole life. But you know what I said to
- 2:33myself, I need more of this And it happened slowly over a period
- 2:39of time. I didn't become a horrible drunk
- 2:43overnight, but I started drinking every night and it
- 2:49started off with a few beers and I get moderately drunk and
- 2:54somewhere somehow along the line it got to a bottle of wine and,
- 2:59and then I then I found these four liter carks of wine for $4
- 3:09and I had an empty flagon and I would make that task of wine
- 3:18last two nights. So, you know, during that period
- 3:21of time, you know, I was drinking two litres of wine
- 3:27every night at the cost of $2.00.
- 3:30I thought I was a bloody genius. I really thought I was clever.
- 3:36And you know, for a long time it still worked.
- 3:39You know, the, IT made me feel peaceful and calm and serene,
- 3:43and I didn't have to worry about anger or resentment or anything
- 3:48like that. I was just in this dreamy
- 3:50fantasyland land where everything seemed to be OK.
- 3:56And so, you know, I chased that every night or 25 years or 25
- 4:06years in the early stages, You know, I was drinking, you know,
- 4:112 liters of wine a night. I had a little ritual going, you
- 4:16know, I, I don't know how I develop this ritual, but I would
- 4:20not open my flag and a wine until 11:00 at night.
- 4:25I would do the dish. I live by myself.
- 4:28I would do the dishes, etcetera, do all the housework, you know,
- 4:32have a shower, shipshave, whatever, you know, And I would,
- 4:36I would, I wouldn't touch the bloody thing until 11:00 at
- 4:39night. But I but before 1230 came, I
- 4:46had drank 2 litres of wine and I was absolutely blotter.
- 4:52And I did that for a long time. Not yeah, for for a while that,
- 4:57that wasn't the way that I eventually finished up drinking.
- 5:02But that's what I did for a while.
- 5:03And of course there were all sorts of problems with drinking
- 5:09so much wine in such a short period of time.
- 5:13Late at night, you know you'd go to bed and I was comatose and
- 5:18more often than than not the the bed was wet in the morning.
- 5:22Fortunately, I was living by myself.
- 5:25I didn't have a dog or a cat or anything like that.
- 5:28I was just this silly, stupid person pissing the bed nearly
- 5:33every night of the week because I'm such a genius.
- 5:40I finally figured out how to save my mattresses.
- 5:44I didn't think about maybe I'm drinking too much or whatever.
- 5:47You know, that didn't occur to me.
- 5:50But I would buy this plastic sheet and put it over the, the,
- 5:56the, the bed each night. And the only thing that ever got
- 6:02wet then was the, the bed sheets and the blankets and stuff.
- 6:05Oh, I had another brilliant idea.
- 6:07I bought the second hand clothes dryer and and you know only that
- 6:16work was only about 5 minutes away and I would put the wet
- 6:22clothes in the clothes dryer, start it up and I'll come back
- 6:28at lunchtime to get the clothes out of the the dryer, etcetera.
- 6:32I didn't wash the bastards, you know, I just put them in wet Ivy
- 6:41and you know, and, and that's how I fumble along for a while.
- 6:47For a few years I did that. But you know, eventually I just
- 6:53couldn't deal with the way I felt in the morning.
- 6:56And the hangovers were terrible. And, and you know, I'd go to
- 7:02work, which was just about 5 minutes down the road.
- 7:04I worked in the local sawmill as as the number one bandsaw
- 7:09operator. I had the reputation of being
- 7:11the best bandsaw operator they ever had.
- 7:15But you know, I, I, I rocked up to work every morning, probably
- 7:24still pissed as a fart from the night before and I would tough
- 7:28it out till till 12:00 and had lunch and, and after lunch
- 7:33everything seemed all right again.
- 7:35You know, I felt good. You know, the hangover was gone.
- 7:39It was wonderful. So Oh well.
- 7:41Oh, ready again for tonight. But, you know, eventually, you
- 7:46know, I, I decided that was far too much alcohol.
- 7:52And so the last 10 years of my drinking, somehow or another, I,
- 7:58I continued drinking every night.
- 8:00I still had that same ritual, but you know, I cut my
- 8:03consumption down by at least half and I I would still go to
- 8:08bed with a bottle of wine each night, but I wouldn't wake up
- 8:12drunk and I would not wake up hungover and feeling seedy and
- 8:18all the rest of that. I woke up feeling OK.
- 8:22For the last 10 years of my drinking life, that's the way I
- 8:27drank. And I thought I was in control.
- 8:31I thought I was in control. It didn't occur to me that
- 8:35normal people don't need a bottle of wine each night to go
- 8:42to bed with. Like normal people don't do it.
- 8:45Maybe a normal person will have a bottle of wine now and again,
- 8:50you know, but that's just now and again.
- 8:52They don't do that every night, and they certainly don't need to
- 8:55do that every night. Is there something that that
- 8:58happens occasionally if they think they want a good time or
- 9:02whatever, you know, But, you know, that's the way I drank the
- 9:09last 10 years of my life until I fell over the Cliff.
- 9:17I eventually fell over the Cliff.
- 9:20Yeah. I got married at 34.
- 9:24I don't know how I was able to attract anybody, but I did.
- 9:29And, and we got, and we got married and all the rest of
- 9:34that. I'd become a Christian by this
- 9:37time. You know, I'm one of these born
- 9:39again evangelical types. And I became a Christian at 25.
- 9:44I didn't stop drinking until I was 45.
- 9:48And I, I was drinking every night as a Christian for 25
- 9:53years, trying to pretend to be a normal person.
- 9:58But of course I wasn't. No.
- 10:00And for because a normal person doesn't need bloody alcohol to
- 10:07feel peaceful and calm and serene, a person, a normal
- 10:12person can find some more productive way to deal with
- 10:18fears and anxieties and worries, etcetera.
- 10:22Normal people learn how to cope with all of that stuff in a far
- 10:27better way than just relying on bloody alcohol.
- 10:31But somehow or another, I never learned how to cope with those
- 10:36sorts of issues. You know, I was just totally
- 10:39dependent upon alcohol. Even as a Christian, I was still
- 10:45totally dependent upon alcohol just to feel OK.
- 10:52And, you know, occasionally my wife was a little bit concerned
- 10:58about the fact that I was drinking a whole bottle of wine
- 11:02by myself late at night, each night, every night.
- 11:05He was a little bit concerned. And she kind of suggested to me
- 11:08that maybe I'm an alcoholic. Of course I'm not an alcoholic.
- 11:12Beer. I'll prove it to you.
- 11:14I'll go for a week without a drink.
- 11:17And So what do I do? I, I go to the pub and I buy
- 11:20those little hip flasks of Brandy.
- 11:25And I would hide the hip flask of Brandy in my underpants in
- 11:33between the cheeks of my ass and walk it into the house and hide
- 11:39it in the toilet system. Then I would wait till the the
- 11:44wife and the and the kids were asleep.
- 11:47And at 2:00 in the morning, I would wake up to go to the
- 11:50toilet and in a, in a single second almost, I would neck this
- 11:55whole thing and return the bottle into the system.
- 11:59And then I would get rid of a bottle the next day in exactly
- 12:04the same way in reverse order. You know, normal people don't do
- 12:09that with a chain of Coke, do they?
- 12:11Does anybody do that with a chain of Coke?
- 12:17And I didn't think there was anything strange about that.
- 12:20I thought that was perfectly normal.
- 12:22After all, you know, she, she accused me of being an
- 12:26alcoholic. I've got to prove to her I'm
- 12:28not. But I couldn't live without this
- 12:31bloody dose of alcohol. So I wasn't much of A binge
- 12:35drinker. I always drank my shit in front
- 12:38of the the television set late at night.
- 12:42There there's no problems with the police.
- 12:45I never had car accidents or Duis or hospitalizations.
- 12:51The police never knocked on my door and managed to pay all the
- 12:54bills. So.
- 12:57So I thought I was OK. I didn't think there was
- 13:01anything strange about my behaviour.
- 13:04Why would that? Why would anyone consider that
- 13:06strange? I didn't.
- 13:09Anyway, I eventually fell off the Cliff.
- 13:13We were having our third baby and full term and sadly the baby
- 13:20was stillborn and, and everything changed.
- 13:25Everything changed instantly that from that moment on, for
- 13:30the next 6 months, I would be yeah, drinking first thing in
- 13:37the morning and on the way to work.
- 13:41If I could, I'd find a way to drink at work.
- 13:44I would drink on my way home and I would get pisted a fart every
- 13:52night for the next 6 months. So for the for the for, for, I
- 13:55had a, a six month Bender there where I wasn't really physically
- 14:00sober for at least six months. I still managed to, you know,
- 14:06pay the bills and go to church and and do and and and and and
- 14:12work and all the rest of that. I managed to somehow, but you
- 14:16know, six months of drinking like that was a, a total
- 14:23disaster. And I came into Alcoholics
- 14:26Anonymous about 25 years ago. First person that shook my hand
- 14:31was this bloke called Broken Hill Jack and he invited me to
- 14:37sit next to him and I was shivering and shaking and, and
- 14:41smelling like shit and, you know, but he was, he was kind
- 14:45enough to let me sit next to him and and you know, I, I stayed
- 14:50with a a but I didn't really grasp a Step 1.
- 14:58You know, I never went to jail. I never had problems with the
- 15:04police. I never had a DUII, never lost
- 15:09my family or my children or anything like that.
- 15:13The very worst thing that ever happened was that I would twist
- 15:18the bed if I drank too much, not booze the night before.
- 15:21That's literally the worst thing that ever happened.
- 15:24And I thought I was better. I listened to all these people
- 15:28that went to jail and mental institutions and and
- 15:32hospitalizations and, and I thought to myself what a bunch
- 15:37of wankersy people are. And I didn't think I was quite
- 15:47as bad as you guys. I thought I probably had some
- 15:50sort of problem with alcohol and I didn't want to drink at that
- 15:53time. So I stayed without with
- 15:56Alcoholics Anonymous for a couple of years there.
- 15:59And I didn't drink, but I didn't grasp step one.
- 16:05And at the same time, you know, all that fearfulness, anxiety
- 16:10and worry and stress came back into my head and had no real way
- 16:14of feeling with it. And I, I wasn't really listening
- 16:18to anybody or what they were saying because I'm different,
- 16:22I'm better, I'm smarter, you know, why should I listen to you
- 16:26guys? So, you know, I, I was stubborn
- 16:29and wilful and unteachable because I didn't really believe
- 16:34that I was powerless over alcohol.
- 16:37I didn't believe that I might have said it when I was called
- 16:42to speak, but I never ever really believed that I was
- 16:47powerless over alcohol. So, you know, one day 22 years
- 16:54ago, I picked up a drink and I just don't know what happened.
- 17:00I have no idea of what happened. All I know that I drank all
- 17:07morning and all afternoon and all night and somehow or another
- 17:13I found found myself in the Royal Adelaide Hospital with a
- 17:17breathing tube down my neck because I was in danger of
- 17:21asphyxiating. That part of the brain that
- 17:24controls breathing was depressed and I could hardly breathe and I
- 17:30nearly died one day's drinker. And you know, if, if I didn't
- 17:36stop them, if I had an, if I had another drink as soon as I got
- 17:43out of hospital, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be here now.
- 17:48I'd have been dead 22 years ago. Because if that's what happened
- 17:53on my last drink, sure as hell that'll happen on this, my next
- 17:59drink and and drink after that. My body could not survive that
- 18:05for too long. I'm 70 years of age now.
- 18:10If I had a drink tonight and I started drinking like that again
- 18:15and worse, if I started to drink like that again and worse, I
- 18:22would be dead very, very quickly.
- 18:27I would not survive. There won't be no coming back.
- 18:31I'm too old to try again. It's too difficult.
- 18:36It's too painful to go through the steps and all of that stuff
- 18:40again. It would be easier for me just
- 18:44to continue drinking till I drop dead.
- 18:47And I don't want to drop dead like that.
- 18:50I just don't want to. But of course, you know, I still
- 18:53have this problem with fearfulness and anxiety and
- 18:57worry and guilt and shame and anger and resentment.
- 19:02And you know what? I had to start listening to what
- 19:05was going on in AAI, had to listen to the people share their
- 19:10stories and, and I had to seriously consider not just step
- 19:18one, but all the other steps as well.
- 19:22And I have found that the best way to deal with all of that
- 19:27fearfulness and anxiety and worry and guilt and shame and
- 19:32all of those other things I just tried to make disappear with
- 19:37alcohol. The best way if the 12 steps of
- 19:40a, A, you know, you just, you just include all of those steps
- 19:47as principles by which you live your life every day.
- 19:52I haven't done it perfectly. Nobody here has done it
- 19:55perfectly. No one here ever will do it
- 19:57perfectly. But to me, they're all
- 20:00principles that I need to employ on a daily basis.
- 20:04I have to make amends for the, for the crazy way that I live my
- 20:10life. And and you know, for the last
- 20:1520 years as a living amends I, I do a volunteer job.
- 20:20I drive old ladies around from this place to that place, you
- 20:24know, I get, I get a community bus and, and they smack me on
- 20:29the on the arse if they think I've been naughty and give me
- 20:35chocolates when they think I've been good.
- 20:40And, you know, it makes me feel useful and it, it forces me, it
- 20:48forces me to think about other people rather than just focusing
- 20:53on my morbid sense of self centeredness.
- 20:57You know, for 20 years I've been doing this and it's been
- 21:00fantastic because it forces me, it forces me to do something for
- 21:06another person without expecting anything in return.
- 21:11So I've learned a bit of selflessness and, and community
- 21:16service and I'm actually useful to people and they actually like
- 21:20me. They actually like me, you know,
- 21:25But you know, I still struggle with that, you know, that
- 21:30anxious mind. And sometimes, you know, I'd, if
- 21:34I wanted to, if I wanted to, I could fill up my heart and mind
- 21:40with anger and fearfulness every day for the rest of my life if I
- 21:45wanted to. I had to divorce my wife
- 21:49eventually because he found somebody else who was a
- 21:53convicted pedophile. So I divorced her and she has
- 21:58since died and my daughter is now living with this bloke.
- 22:04So if I wanted to fill my heart with anger and resentment, I
- 22:09could easily do that. Since the divorce, I walked away
- 22:15from the house and everything that I had, and now I live in a
- 22:19rented room from a friend. What happens if something
- 22:26changes there? You know, I could find myself
- 22:29out in the street tomorrow. If I wanted to live my life in
- 22:32constant fearfulness and anxiety, I could do that.
- 22:38I've got all the fuel I need. I've got all the fuel I need.
- 22:43But you know what my Bible tells me that the perfect love of God
- 22:49casts out all fear. And if it casts out fear, it
- 22:53casts out anger and rage and fury and all the other things.
- 22:57My Bible tells me that in the presence of God there is
- 23:00fullness of joy. So I have another way of dealing
- 23:06with all of this stuff that could so easily destroy me.
- 23:11You know, I pursue God's love on a daily basis and for whatever
- 23:17reason, God has chosen to love me.
- 23:20I don't know why He has chosen to do that, but He has.
- 23:25And I have found that His love for me as I embrace it on a
- 23:30daily basis is enough to keep my alcoholic mind under control.
- 23:35And today's being a wonderful day, had no problems whatsoever.
- 23:40I've done my volunteer job, went to the pub and had pork rib for
- 23:44tea. You know, I didn't even, I
- 23:46didn't even have to pay. It was my, my birthday, you
- 23:49know. So you know, it's a, it's
- 23:52today's been a #1A grade day and I'm happy to be here.
- 23:57Soda. Thank you.
