Transcript
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody. Welcome back to the 22 Panels Love and Rockets Book Club. I'm joined from Australia by Maria, and from…
- 0:14Tad Eggleston: from… Just south of me? Well, rather than just north of me.
- 0:21Tad Eggleston: by Marisol.
- 0:23Marisol: Just a… just a little bit south.
- 0:26Tad Eggleston: I think you're… I think you're farther south of me than you used to be north of me, but still, like…
- 0:32Tad Eggleston: Not so far as to make it, like, at all significant.
- 0:37Tad Eggleston: And apparently, you're having a birthday this weekend. Are you turning some sort of cool number, or are you just 17 again?
- 0:48Marisol: Out of cool numbers for now. Just gonna be 32.
- 0:53Tad Eggleston: 32 is not a bad number. I mean, don't get me wrong, 31's a better number.
- 0:57Marisol: Yes.
- 0:58Tad Eggleston: Because 31 is the perfect number for artisan pitching.
- 1:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. A lot of my favorite pitchers, and particularly the ones that are really good at, like, painting corners and just out-thinking hitters, wore number 31.
- 1:18Tad Eggleston: Greg Maddox, in particular. So… so that's… that's… that's… that's why 31's literally my favorite number.
- 1:25Marisol: That's why it's the best…
- 1:26Tad Eggleston: when I turned 32.
- 1:28Marisol: Aww.
- 1:30Maria Pena: Fuh.
- 1:32Tad Eggleston: Anyway, Loving Rock is number 9. Number 9's another favorite number, because they're 9 innings in a baseball game, and Ted Williams was number 9. Now you're getting into my autistic numerology.
- 1:44Maria Pena: Okay.
- 1:45Maria Pena: Heh!
- 1:46Marisol: We're learning.
- 1:46Tad Eggleston: I'll try to make it stop.
- 1:48Marisol: nerd.
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: I'll try to make it stop. Also, number 9… number 9… Number 9.
- 1:55Maria Pena: Alright, that's enough, Ted. That's enough, Ted.
- 1:59Tad Eggleston: Somebody's gotta tell me what I was quoting there, though.
- 2:03Marisol: I have no idea.
- 2:04Maria Pena: Oh.
- 2:05Maria Pena: I don't know.
- 2:06Tad Eggleston: That's Revolution 9 from the Beatles.
- 2:10Maria Pena: That's wild.
- 2:11Marisol: I don't know.
- 2:12Maria Pena: Okay, not.
- 2:14Marisol: I'm not huge on the Beatles, but…
- 2:15Tad Eggleston: That's sad? That's sad.
- 2:17Marisol: Lady?
- 2:19Maria Pena: Considering I'm the age where I should know more about this, although they are still older than me, you know, like, they're my…
- 2:26Tad Eggleston: I said.
- 2:27Maria Pena: Their brother's generation.
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah, what was sad Marisol's not big on the Beatles.
- 2:33Maria Pena: What?
- 2:35Marisol: That's what I'm saying. Yeah, that would be my favorite.
- 2:36Maria Pena: Must be a generation.
- 2:37Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's okay for them not to be your favorite.
- 2:40Tad Eggleston: I think it's almost reached a point where it's hard for them to be your favorite, because, like…
- 2:50Maria Pena: They sound old hat because all the new music is based on them, basically.
- 2:55Tad Eggleston: Right, I mean, there's that.
- 2:57Tad Eggleston: But, but also.
- 3:00Maria Pena: Or a little bit, mainly.
- 3:04Tad Eggleston: you can't ju… like, even when something is head and tail, I mean…
- 3:10Tad Eggleston: Let's use Love & Rockets as an example. Love and Rockets, for that matter, let's use your two book clubs as an example. Love and Rockets and Saga are great comics. How many comics will you put up against Love & Rockets and Saga among the ones that you've read?
- 3:26Marisol: Not many, because it's just.
- 3:28Maria Pena: Nope.
- 3:29Marisol: They're in a league of their own.
- 3:31Tad Eggleston: But you still read other comics, because if you only read Love and Rockets and Saga, you'd get bored eventually.
- 3:38Marisol: It's a very limited little… comic reading.
- 3:44Marisol: Right. It is.
- 3:46Tad Eggleston: So, I think…
- 3:47Tad Eggleston: I think part of the thing with the Beatles, it's twofold. First, they shone bright, but for a relatively short period of time. It's like a.
- 3:56Marisol: Bye for now.
- 3:57Tad Eggleston: albums.
- 3:58Tad Eggleston: Oh. And second, like…
- 4:01Tad Eggleston: Because they're so good, there is no era where they have not been in heavy rotation.
- 4:10Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 4:10Tad Eggleston: So…
- 4:11Marisol: Hmm.
- 4:12Tad Eggleston: So, like…
- 4:15Tad Eggleston: I think… I think, like, the current generation might be the first generation that has… that has managed to… to… to live a life where they weren't likely to hear a Beatles song every day.
- 4:26Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 4:27Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 4:29Marisol: Yeah.
- 4:29Maria Pena: Except for people in Liverpool, because I was in Liverpool last year.
- 4:33Tad Eggleston: Oh, I'm certain they…
- 4:34Maria Pena: everywhere.
- 4:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 4:37Maria Pena: Like, every cafe.
- 4:38Tad Eggleston: Well, it'll be many, many, many more generations before they stop hearing Beatles songs every day.
- 4:44Maria Pena: Like, it was, like, so crazy. Like, you know, like, you'd go to a cafe and it'd be…
- 4:50Maria Pena: There'd be other music, but every few songs would be a Beatles song. Right. And, you know, everywhere, everywhere you went. It was crazy. And, you know, there's pictures of them everywhere, and…
- 5:01Tad Eggleston: You know, and I'm not gonna put it to the test with you, Marisol, unless you desperately want me to, because among other things, I'd have to get to know your actual musical taste better, but the Beatles are also one of those bands that, like.
- 5:15Tad Eggleston: You tell me you don't like the Beatles, but tell me what you do like, and I can make the CD of Beatles stuff that you'll love.
- 5:22Marisol: Oh, I'm sure!
- 5:23Tad Eggleston: You might not love all of the Beatles, but I can manage to put together
- 5:27Tad Eggleston: 80 minutes that you'll go.
- 5:29Marisol: Right.
- 5:29Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay, now I get it.
- 5:34Marisol: vibe!
- 5:39Tad Eggleston: You know, the Beatles are actually… and, like, this is how I'll tie it back into Love and Rockets, because Jaime in particular is like this as well.
- 5:50Tad Eggleston: Like… I use the Beatles in a discussion of genius that I sometimes have. Like, like, most artists…
- 6:00Tad Eggleston: Are thrilled if they can touch that… that… Upper-level, above-the-clouds genius.
- 6:09Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 6:10Tad Eggleston: -Oh.
- 6:12Tad Eggleston: Brian and Fiona have done it for Saga, but as great as Brian is, I don't know that any of his other comics have gone there.
- 6:20Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: David Bowie did it for a couple of albums, Ziggy Stardust, and… and… and… Right.
- 6:35Tad Eggleston: Maria, I'm certain you could give us a physical artist and a couple of, you know, that has a couple of paintings that are just outstanding, and the rest of their stuff is very good, but not as good as…
- 6:47Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 6:49Tad Eggleston: you know.
- 6:51Tad Eggleston: The Beatles had, like, 2 albums that were very good, and then lived in that upper stratosphere for the next 10 albums.
- 6:59Marisol: Wow.
- 6:59Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 7:01Tad Eggleston: It was almost every album was better than the last for 10 albums, and, like, the first of those 10 albums was better than 90% of…
- 7:13Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 7:14Maria Pena: That's crazy. Oh, yeah.
- 7:16Tad Eggleston: that have been made. You know what I mean?
- 7:19Maria Pena: Until then, yeah. It was so different from everything, and…
- 7:23Tad Eggleston: Right. Love it.
- 7:24Maria Pena: And, you know, classic songs, album of classic songs, every album, it's like, there's no… there's hardly any bad singles, so, like, yep, that's it. Right.
- 7:35Tad Eggleston: They're often… they're often albums of singles that also play well as albums. They don't sound like great… you know how a Greatest Hits album doesn't always play well if you just…
- 7:46Tad Eggleston: play it start to finish, because it's just hits, and they don't necessarily… like, all of the Beatles albums play as albums, but they're also filled with.
- 7:56Maria Pena: hits.
- 7:57Tad Eggleston: Banger singles.
- 7:59Maria Pena: Hasn hits yet.
- 8:01Tad Eggleston: You know, and we'll now tie it to Love & Rockets. I, like, Marie and I were talking a little bit before you got here about the difference between Jaime and…
- 8:11Tad Eggleston: And…
- 8:13Maria Pena: I'm betting.
- 8:13Tad Eggleston: And aside from the fact that Beto can be just looser to do more storytelling, he clearly works faster. I mean, we also get way more work out of him.
- 8:26Maria Pena: And really good stories, I bet there's…
- 8:28Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 8:28Maria Pena: scripts, he's, like, he's a…
- 8:33Maria Pena: You know, like, the depth of his, psychology of his characters and stuff is just crazy, you know, like, it's just so different, so amazing.
- 8:42Tad Eggleston: But what I would say…
- 8:44Tad Eggleston: like, comparing them, particularly until this stage, but I think it really kind of holds over until now.
- 8:51Tad Eggleston: like… Beto touches that stratosphere. Like, human diastrophism was in that upper stratosphere.
- 9:01Marisol: Oh, absolutely.
- 9:02Tad Eggleston: was in that upper stratosphere. Like… Jaime?
- 9:09Tad Eggleston: Like, those first 3 issues where he still was messing around with the… the solar… pro-solar mechanics and whatnot, that's the only time that he hasn't been in the upper stratosphere.
- 9:23Tad Eggleston: you know, as soon as he started Death of Speedy, He just never looked down.
- 9:30Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 9:32Marisol: Yeah.
- 9:33Tad Eggleston: Whereas Beto goes up there a lot, and he always floats high, but he also, like, rather than refining his own style and taking his influences and feeding them into his style, he'll occasionally just do something different.
- 9:49Tad Eggleston: you know, who'll go… I mean, like, Stigmata errata is almost completely different art from any of the… Palomar.
- 9:59Tad Eggleston: You know, and there are other examples of that, where Beto's just like, let's try this today.
- 10:07Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, it's way in the future, but he did a series recently called Blubber that's all, like.
- 10:15Tad Eggleston: Weird monster stuff.
- 10:18Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 10:18Tad Eggleston: And you can kind of tell that it's Beto, but it's also Beto… Trying something very, very different.
- 10:25Tad Eggleston: You know?
- 10:27Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 10:29Tad Eggleston: So, Lovin' Rockets, Volume 2, Number 9. Oh my god, is this cover.
- 10:37Maria Pena: Discoveries.
- 10:39Maria Pena: Incredible. I love the… Love it.
- 10:42Maria Pena: I mean, it's easy, right?
- 10:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:45Maria Pena: Now, I assume it's easy, and I love the hair just streaking down through… I mean, it's just amazing, like…
- 10:53Marisol: Just the googlish look of her.
- 10:58Marisol: Cool.
- 10:59Tad Eggleston: The scars…
- 11:01Maria Pena: And, like, the contrast between her, her kind of… You know, dark, moody…
- 11:08Maria Pena: Kind of body and all this, and she's looking at this,
- 11:12Tad Eggleston: bright.
- 11:13Maria Pena: suburban fast food restaurant, and maybe she's hungry, I don't know what's going on, but maybe she needs a snack.
- 11:23Tad Eggleston: Here's my question, like…
- 11:26Tad Eggleston: Are we supposed to assume that that's somebody in the restaurant, or do you think that that's just a character? Because it could…
- 11:33Tad Eggleston: Almost?
- 11:34Maria Pena: It kind of looks like Jaime.
- 11:37Tad Eggleston: Like I said.
- 11:38Marisol: Thank you.
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: I was about to say, it could almost… B…
- 11:42Tad Eggleston: Hopi, and it could almost be…
- 11:45Maria Pena: Bye.
- 11:47Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 11:47Maria Pena: Yeah, it's definitely not happy, because it's someone with curly hair or something, but…
- 11:52Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 11:52Maria Pena: It's a guy. It's just… I think it's just a random guy, really.
- 11:59Tad Eggleston: It's not too often that doing just the perfect circle yellow full moon makes me, like, really…
- 12:07Tad Eggleston: I think it's perfect, but, like, it is.
- 12:10Tad Eggleston: Because the way the sky… I mean, like…
- 12:16Tad Eggleston: Because the sky is just that… horrible black.
- 12:23Tad Eggleston: I find myself completely okay with the nondescript Perfect circle.
- 12:29Tad Eggleston: full moon, it, like…
- 12:31Maria Pena: That's pretty cool.
- 12:32Tad Eggleston: It lights it properly.
- 12:34Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 12:36Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 12:42Tad Eggleston: Cool albums for sale from Netherota Records.
- 12:47Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't know for certain they're cool albums, because I don't recognize any of the artists.
- 12:52Tad Eggleston: But… We can assume.
- 12:57Maria Pena: Oh, this page. That second panel. I mean, everything.
- 13:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 13:02Maria Pena: The, the weird-looking pumpkin.
- 13:05Tad Eggleston: I like the two bottom left panels, too.
- 13:10Marisol: Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:12Maria Pena: I like the whole sequence.
- 13:14Marisol: sequence with the dog. It's just… Freaky.
- 13:18Maria Pena: That is so creepy, yeah.
- 13:20Maria Pena: Like, oh, and the dog is kind of in the same position that she was in, so… so, you know, she's… dog is mirroring… like, if you go back to the…
- 13:29Maria Pena: previous page, the dog is mirroring her position, and then she…
- 13:34Maria Pena: You know, and then she kind of lifts up, and then the dog lifts up in the same way.
- 13:40Maria Pena: It's like, doggies.
- 13:43Maria Pena: Her, in a way.
- 13:46Maria Pena: like, her dark side, I don't know, but…
- 13:51Maria Pena: So if you go to the next…
- 13:52Maria Pena: Look at the bottom left panel, and then look at the next page, bottom right panel, and it's like…
- 13:59Maria Pena: Maggie again.
- 14:01Maria Pena: Are you doing it?
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: Next page? Sorry.
- 14:08Maria Pena: Okay, so previous page, bottom left panel.
- 14:12Maria Pena: And top… and next page, bottom right… so this page, bottom right panel, is like a mirror image of Maggie.
- 14:20Maria Pena: Yeah Hananah, dog!
- 14:25Tad Eggleston: Which, in some ways is even cooler, because… because it's a 1-2…
- 14:33Tad Eggleston: That is literally the backside of that panel.
- 14:39Maria Pena: And then the dog just starts walking in two legs… on two legs, which is really weird. And I love that Hitchcockian, the close-up of, Maggie getting closer and closer and closer.
- 14:53Maria Pena: I'm getting more and more horrified, like, what the fuck?
- 14:56Marisol: It just makes it all seem that much more ominous that this dog is just here.
- 15:01Marisol: And then gets up and starts walking towards her on two legs.
- 15:04Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:06Maria Pena: And then she's… bang, she's, back to reality.
- 15:13Marisol: Going to see her family.
- 15:17Tad Eggleston: It's always interesting when Maggie goes to beat Tia.
- 15:21Tad Eggleston: TF.
- 15:22Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:26Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:27Marisol: Her sister's kids.
- 15:28Maria Pena: Maggie, Maggie, Maggie.
- 15:29Tad Eggleston: Fighting twins.
- 15:33Maria Pena: Yeah, Esther's… Esther's kids.
- 15:37Maria Pena: Young Esther. He's grown up.
- 15:40Maria Pena: Brilliant.
- 15:43Maria Pena: And, and one of them is, Main, one of the twins, and the other one defends, defends,
- 15:50Maria Pena: Oh, Maggie?
- 15:53Tad Eggleston: That's my sister Lupe. You're fat. You better stop saying that, you're gonna get it!
- 15:59Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 16:05Marisol: Mr.
- 16:06Tad Eggleston: very… Very…
- 16:07Marisol: The kids looking so… peanuts every time they draw kids.
- 16:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, but these are also very, very peppermint patty sandals.
- 16:17Marisol: Yeah.
- 16:20Tad Eggleston: So it's not just the mouth… the mouths are totally peanuts.
- 16:24Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:26Tad Eggleston: But I love that the sandals are totally peppermint patty sandals.
- 16:31Maria Pena: In that top, top left, top left…
- 16:34Maria Pena: panel, I love the, you know, the one that's on the floor, and even the little.
- 16:39Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 16:40Maria Pena: Turned-in toes, everything is so natural, like, the post is just great.
- 16:50Tad Eggleston: Yolanda, I told you, if you ever hit your sister again, but…
- 16:56Maria Pena: She said my tea was fast.
- 16:57Tad Eggleston: was bad.
- 17:00Maria Pena: Yeah, they're great.
- 17:04Maria Pena: So…
- 17:06Maria Pena: What's this all about? It's, Maggie coming home, and then she's sort of being a bit judgy about everyone, you know, like, she's… she doesn't fit in anymore.
- 17:19Tad Eggleston: I, I…
- 17:19Maria Pena: And also…
- 17:20Tad Eggleston: Totally, totally love when they finally see that Maggie's there. How long have you been standing there? Long enough to watch my little sister turn into a screeching maniac.
- 17:33Maria Pena: Shut up, Maggie.
- 17:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the family parties are always weird.
- 17:45Marisol: Yeah.
- 17:46Marisol: And I'll be the little crazy.
- 17:49Tad Eggleston: But, I mean, like… I get that.
- 17:54Tad Eggleston: Anytime I'm with anybody beyond, like…
- 18:02Tad Eggleston: So my family's got a limited number of cousins on both sides. So, like, we can have still pretty small get-togethers when it's… when it's just…
- 18:15Tad Eggleston: you know, both of my parents are one of four kids, and, like, I have…
- 18:23Tad Eggleston: Two cousins on my mother's side, and… and a whopping… 6 on my dad's side.
- 18:30Tad Eggleston: So, like, I'm not necessarily awkward in groups there, but the second we're anywhere where maybe… like…
- 18:45Tad Eggleston: the in-laws of one of my uncles or aunts are there… you know what I mean? Is when I start getting awkward, because it's like, oh.
- 18:56Tad Eggleston: I vaguely know who you are. I don't know if I remember your name.
- 19:01Tad Eggleston: I think I know how we're related, though not by blood.
- 19:08Marisol: That's the only awkward thing for me sometimes, like, every once in a while, gathering around family, or mostly with my dad's side of the family, it's a bunch of people who I don't really know, because I didn't grow up with them.
- 19:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 19:23Marisol: And maybe just every once in a while, you hear about them, and then you go to the gathering, it's like, oh, I knew you when you were a baby, and like.
- 19:32Marisol: Ma'am, I don't even know your name.
- 19:35Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 19:36Marisol: Did you say you're my aunt? Okay, I believe you, but I don't know who you are.
- 19:41Tad Eggleston: Particularly, like, sometimes… If the group's big enough, or… or…
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: Like, not always big enough. But, like, when you're in that group, where not only do you not know people, but you figure out pretty quickly that if they weren't related to somebody that you were related to.
- 20:03Tad Eggleston: You would never, ever, ever spend time with them.
- 20:07Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 20:10Marisol: Yep.
- 20:10Maria Pena: Yeah, that's right. I… yeah, I feel that way, too.
- 20:14Tad Eggleston: It's like, so, what do I do? Don't want to seem… impolite or rude, but,
- 20:25Tad Eggleston: I don't want to talk, either.
- 20:30Maria Pena: Yeah, it's just making, you know, sometimes you have to make, sort of, like, Just…
- 20:36Maria Pena: A small dog could be.
- 20:38Tad Eggleston: I don't know how to do small talk.
- 20:40Tad Eggleston: Like, small talk makes me even more uncomfortable. So I'm either, like, silent hiding somewhere with a book, or I latch onto somebody and talk too much.
- 20:52Maria Pena: Yeah, I gotta say, I've put my foot in it. So, when I've tried to make an effort and go, okay, I'm gonna be more sociable, and then I just say the wrong things. Right, right. And then I look like an idiot.
- 21:06Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 21:06Maria Pena: So it's like, it's a fine line.
- 21:11Maria Pena: I love, yeah…
- 21:13Tad Eggleston: Totally feel Maggie in this.
- 21:16Marisol: Yeah.
- 21:16Maria Pena: Yes.
- 21:17Tad Eggleston: And it's also so cool that it looks like the most comfortable she is, though she's still bored, is when, like…
- 21:25Tad Eggleston: They're trying to quiz her on the parts of the.
- 21:28Maria Pena: Of the car, she knows everything.
- 21:32Maria Pena: And that's her brother's, right? Right. Her mother's son's medley.
- 21:36Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 21:38Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 21:42Maria Pena: So…
- 21:44Tad Eggleston: Next time, ask me something hard, like, what kind of Rikatone uses Padua water, or what the hell is a Balthazor, or a Grinslack, and they've got big question marks. Forget it.
- 21:57Maria Pena: Making it up.
- 21:58Tad Eggleston: the second grade.
- 22:04Maria Pena: So, yeah, oh, and she talks about, you know, how we… we revert to the roles when we go back home, you know, we revert to roles when we were kids.
- 22:15Maria Pena: And she's, you know, she's serving, she's picking up after men and stuff, which is probably not something that…
- 22:23Maria Pena: you know.
- 22:24Tad Eggleston: Well, in all.
- 22:24Maria Pena: So she was the…
- 22:25Tad Eggleston: One that got left behind?
- 22:27Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 22:28Tad Eggleston: Her aunt, so she, like…
- 22:31Maria Pena: It's like, this is not really my home.
- 22:34Maria Pena: Yeah, because this is the house they moved to when they left me with Vicky Glory.
- 22:41Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 22:42Maria Pena: Yeah, so it's, yeah, a lot of conflicting, conflicting feelings.
- 22:47Maria Pena: And they… and then they start talking about EZ and the house, that this is Galindo's house.
- 22:52Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 22:53Maria Pena: That easy lives in, and she starts looking up at that moon, and maybe that's where that flashback, you know, to the dog… Right.
- 23:01Maria Pena: Comes… yeah, that's.
- 23:04Tad Eggleston: I do love that.
- 23:04Maria Pena: Sort of sandwiches it, yeah.
- 23:07Maria Pena: Because… That's the sort of creepy shit that I put in the house.
- 23:13Maria Pena: And I should see, it's like she can't help herself, she has to go and have a look.
- 23:19Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 23:20Maria Pena: on this bit, man. You know, that reminds me, I don't know if you ever read 100 Years of Solitude.
- 23:26Maria Pena: But there's a scene where, someone, this guy, one of the… when Diaz gets shot, and this… this trickle of blood
- 23:36Maria Pena: Comes out of him, and it goes down the street, and it turns the corner, past the, you know, and it describes the whole trajectory of this blood, trickle of blood, and it ends up at the feet of his mother, and then she knows that he's dead.
- 23:51Maria Pena: And that's the sort of magic realism.
- 23:54Maria Pena: kind of stuff, and as soon as I saw this, I thought, oh, that's just, like, 100 years of solitude, except this ends at the feet of this little demon person who's lighting up on fire.
- 24:05Tad Eggleston: And it… and it seems likely to be, like, gasoline.
- 24:08Tad Eggleston: kerosene.
- 24:09Maria Pena: Yeah. Something like that.
- 24:10Tad Eggleston: bad.
- 24:12Maria Pena: Yeah, and now this is…
- 24:13Tad Eggleston: He turns into the dog.
- 24:17Maria Pena: Yeah, it runs with the dogs, in any case.
- 24:20Maria Pena: And then it's on fire.
- 24:23Maria Pena: And it's going towards easy.
- 24:27Maria Pena: This is masterful, this story. Like, it's just, like, you go from…
- 24:32Tad Eggleston: She's ridiculous.
- 24:33Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 24:36Maria Pena: Like, you know, we've gone from very normal, light-hearted, ordinary…
- 24:45Maria Pena: Family stuff, and then you… bang, you go into this really fucking creepy stuff.
- 24:52Maria Pena: I mean.
- 24:53Tad Eggleston: But you also… he also, Foreshadow it.
- 24:59Maria Pena: Yes, for sure.
- 25:00Tad Eggleston: shadow with the flashback.
- 25:03Maria Pena: Yes.
- 25:03Tad Eggleston: Then you go into the… The light-hearted, if awkward, family scene.
- 25:12Maria Pena: And maybe you…
- 25:14Tad Eggleston: present day, and…
- 25:20Maria Pena: And also, you know, at the end of the… the visit to her family, she was a little bit down, because she was like, oh, maybe I'm… I'm a snob, and…
- 25:29Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 25:30Maria Pena: And that's part of it, maybe? Like, it's part of her, state of mind, in a way.
- 25:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 25:41Tad Eggleston: And then we go for some high soft lisp.
- 25:45Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 25:45Maria Pena: What does she say in Scott?
- 25:48Tad Eggleston: I don't know.
- 25:51Maria Pena: She's in love with, well, Preeti and Scott.
- 25:56Maria Pena: But, you know, really the other issue that we're reading today, Scott is very,
- 26:03Maria Pena: Present in her life from… From high school, so she's obviously always had it.
- 26:10Tad Eggleston: Oh, and this is a flashback to almost high school.
- 26:13Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 26:17Maria Pena: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:19Maria Pena: Yeah, that's right. That's when they were still… young, and then… She married him.
- 26:27Tad Eggleston: And then she married the… the weird… Self-help guy.
- 26:32Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 26:33Tad Eggleston: I think we're going through the husbands in this one.
- 26:36Maria Pena: Boy, Scott was such an asshole to her, like…
- 26:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 26:40Maria Pena: I mean, doesn't he know what he's got there? Jesus.
- 26:45Tad Eggleston: Well, and it almost seems like that's half of why she keeps going back to him.
- 26:51Maria Pena: Right.
- 26:51Tad Eggleston: He's, like, the representation of her low self-esteem?
- 26:56Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 26:57Maria Pena: Yeah, like, if this fat guy, you know, look, just…
- 27:02Tad Eggleston: This fat, self-centered, drunk guy who doesn't appreciate me…
- 27:07Maria Pena: Yeah, that's what I deserve, kind of thing. Oh, it was so heartbreaking when she… he tells her, oh, we're gonna go out and go and dress up and stuff, and then she goes and makes all this effort.
- 27:18Maria Pena: And… And he's with someone else in bed, so…
- 27:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 27:24Maria Pena: I was just like, oh man, Fritzy?
- 27:33Maria Pena: Oh, he did make an album with her on the cover.
- 27:36Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 27:40Maria Pena: Ugh.
- 27:41Tad Eggleston: She's got her… her sugar daddy.
- 27:43Maria Pena: Yeah, they're old.
- 27:47Tad Eggleston: She also treats her really terribly for…
- 27:50Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 27:50Tad Eggleston: minutes, but then, has a heart attack, and…
- 27:54Tad Eggleston: She doesn't exactly do anything to save him.
- 27:57Maria Pena: No.
- 28:00Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 28:03Maria Pena: So, yeah, so she's… she's got very bad tasting, maybe.
- 28:09Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 28:12Maria Pena: And then… What happens then? Oh, there! Oh yeah, now she meets the…
- 28:17Maria Pena: This really handsome guy at the high school reunion.
- 28:23Maria Pena: That she doesn't remember.
- 28:24Tad Eggleston: Being the guy that… that… that she… Bullied.
- 28:28Maria Pena: cute.
- 28:29Maria Pena: Yeah, that, you know, she and her friends… I mean, it looks like her friends were the kids, and she's just kind of didn't do anything, you know, she was part of a big clique of…
- 28:41Maria Pena: girls, but… I don't think she was mean to him, necessarily.
- 28:50Maria Pena: And he's out for revenge.
- 28:52Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 28:55Maria Pena: Oof. It's almost like, that toxic masculinity stuff that's, you know, so prevalent now, you know?
- 29:05Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 29:05Maria Pena: He's almost like a means, so… weird.
- 29:09Tad Eggleston: Definitely.
- 29:10Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 29:16Maria Pena: Yeah, very, very disturbing stuff.
- 29:20Tad Eggleston: And then Venus…
- 29:23Tad Eggleston: On top of it all, I wish Aunt Fritz wasn't so dumb. I mean, nice. So nice.
- 29:29Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 29:30Maria Pena: Yeah, Venus has been really,
- 29:33Maria Pena: a bit, being too frizzy, kind of, in a way. Well, I'm thinking of the other issue that we're reading now, because of…
- 29:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 29:41Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think… I think Venus honestly cares a lot for Fritzy. She's just also the one that, like…
- 29:50Maria Pena: She sees him through…
- 29:51Tad Eggleston: Her without putting up with the bullshit?
- 29:54Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 29:55Marisol: Venus also strikes me as a very blunt and upfront person.
- 29:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I think…
- 29:59Maria Pena: Yes.
- 30:00Tad Eggleston: I think Petra, like, won't tell her.
- 30:04Tad Eggleston: about the bullshit, but thinks less of her because of it, and talks behind her back because of it, and that sort of thing. Whereas Venus is like, Aunt Fritzie, you're so smart. Why the fuck are you doing this?
- 30:21Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 30:23Marisol: Yeah, that's Venus.
- 30:27Tad Eggleston: I almost don't want Venus to grow up.
- 30:30Maria Pena: Right?
- 30:34Maria Pena: Yeah… She must be growing up by now.
- 30:38Tad Eggleston: I think she is.
- 30:41Maria Pena: And then Julio's day.
- 30:43Maria Pena: Again.
- 30:44Tad Eggleston: This time, just.
- 30:45Marisol: One page.
- 30:46Maria Pena: Just his mother praying.
- 30:49Maria Pena: And praying for everybody else, and then she thinks about it for a while and goes, oh, I want a necklace with arms.
- 31:01Maria Pena: No.
- 31:03Tad Eggleston: Near the end of Me for the Unknown.
- 31:06Maria Pena: Yeah, they started to feel more like, okay, something's happening that I understand, you know, like…
- 31:12Tad Eggleston: This melee scene is crazy.
- 31:16Maria Pena: Yeah, oh, what happens to those guys that pirate, the mob just… descends on them, and…
- 31:23Marisol: Oof.
- 31:24Maria Pena: And dismember them by hand, with their own, like… like, eyeballs get.
- 31:31Marisol: It's crazy.
- 31:32Maria Pena: Arms get torn off, eyeballs get sucked out.
- 31:35Maria Pena: Oh, it's scooped out.
- 31:37Maria Pena: Pulled out of the sockets.
- 31:39Maria Pena: It's like, whoa.
- 31:41Marisol: Gruesome.
- 31:42Maria Pena: And
- 31:45Maria Pena: And we're about to be… the kid is about to be reunited with his parents, and he hasn't noticed because he's been on his device the whole time, which is very for…
- 31:55Maria Pena: shadowing of…
- 31:57Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 31:58Maria Pena: Of today's, you know, youth misspent.
- 32:03Marisol: Yep.
- 32:04Maria Pena: Childhood.
- 32:07Maria Pena: Digson deities.
- 32:09Maria Pena: I love this back cover.
- 32:11Tad Eggleston: The back cover is very cool.
- 32:13Maria Pena: I think that's gonna be my favorite, animal, so…
- 32:17Tad Eggleston: Beto.
- 32:19Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 32:21Tad Eggleston: Let's take a look at… Sum… Luba Comics and Stories…
- 32:33Maria Pena: So that was…
- 32:34Tad Eggleston: Six…
- 32:37Maria Pena: That was cool.
- 32:39Maria Pena: I love that cover, it reminds me of… it's almost like,
- 32:43Maria Pena: DC copper, you know, like, there's something that reminded me of, like,
- 32:50Maria Pena: romance comics? There's something about it, and I don't know what it is.
- 32:55Tad Eggleston: It definitely has a romance comics feel.
- 32:58Maria Pena: And yeah, and I don't know why, because it… I don't remember any Romans comic covers that look like that, but there's something about it. I love the…
- 33:08Tad Eggleston: I think between…
- 33:09Marisol: poses?
- 33:10Tad Eggleston: Single color background, and the.
- 33:12Maria Pena: spot.
- 33:13Tad Eggleston: the font.
- 33:14Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 33:14Tad Eggleston: for Luba and Fritz.
- 33:17Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 33:18Maria Pena: I love the way the black just joins them all together, the black.
- 33:23Marisol: Oh, I'm just noticing now the font for each of their names is different.
- 33:28Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 33:29Tad Eggleston: And this time, we're emphasizing everybody's legs rather than bosoms.
- 33:34Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 33:35Maria Pena: Yeah, for us, yeah.
- 33:38Maria Pena: In their hair.
- 33:39Maria Pena: Your hair's kind of flowing.
- 33:42Marisol: Yep.
- 33:43Maria Pena: Ye.
- 33:44Marisol: But with a lot more gray in her hair.
- 33:46Maria Pena: Yes, I was about to say, yeah, Luba's obviously older, she's… I think Luba's…
- 33:55Tad Eggleston: Probably in her 50s now?
- 33:57Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 33:58Tad Eggleston: 40s, early 50s?
- 34:00Maria Pena: Yeah, but she's always had a hard life, like, she looks…
- 34:04Marisol: A bit.
- 34:05Maria Pena: Beaten up, even when she was just in her 30s.
- 34:09Marisol: Yeah. Because how much older is she than Fruits and Petra?
- 34:13Tad Eggleston: I think at least a decade.
- 34:17Marisol: I thought so.
- 34:19Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 34:19Marisol: I don't remember if it's ever stated how much older she is than them, but…
- 34:22Tad Eggleston: I don't know if it is either.
- 34:26Marisol: I knew it had to be at least around 10 years.
- 34:29Maria Pena: Yep.
- 34:31Maria Pena: I love this page.
- 34:32Maria Pena: For the three daughters.
- 34:34Tad Eggleston: Cool on.
- 34:37Marisol: Deluba with her trusty hammer.
- 34:40Maria Pena: Yes.
- 34:41Tad Eggleston: I also love that it's got Venus… with that, that…
- 34:47Maria Pena: criticizing…
- 34:48Tad Eggleston: Mom…
- 34:49Marisol: Yeah.
- 34:53Tad Eggleston: Boxing?
- 34:57Maria Pena: Oh, lubas.
- 34:59Maria Pena: Dorian Gray portrait.
- 35:01Marisol: Mute.
- 35:02Maria Pena: Or something.
- 35:05Maria Pena: So…
- 35:05Marisol: proceeds to burn.
- 35:08Maria Pena: She burns it, and then she drinks from the… some kind of… Fountain, or…
- 35:15Maria Pena: Or… or… or the… the portrait…
- 35:21Maria Pena: Melts, and she's dipped her hands in it or something?
- 35:25Maria Pena: And then she's young.
- 35:27Marisol: She was, like, using The water from the river to put it out.
- 35:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 35:33Maria Pena: What was that, Maurice also?
- 35:35Marisol: Yeah, I thought the… what she was, like, dipping her hands in, she was just taking water from the river to put out the fire of the.
- 35:45Maria Pena: Yeah, okay. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 35:50Maria Pena: That's a much, much better explanation, because I was like, where'd that water come from?
- 35:57Maria Pena: And then she looks at herself in the… in the stream, and she's young again.
- 36:04Maria Pena: And she's… Looking at her sisters when they were teenagers.
- 36:12Maria Pena: So I guess it says here that she's in her 20s.
- 36:16Maria Pena: And then the sisters are teenagers.
- 36:20Maria Pena: So, maybe that's the difference in their ages. They went back to the same era.
- 36:27Maria Pena: You know what I mean?
- 36:29Tad Eggleston: Possibly.
- 36:31Maria Pena: You did seem very happy to be 20-ish again, Luba.
- 36:37Maria Pena: pivoting.
- 36:39Maria Pena: Sisters were… They'd have to be younger than… Maybe it's not.
- 36:46Maria Pena: Okay, never mind what I just said. Because I think she's older than them by at least 10 years, so if she's 20, they're not 10 years old, so that it doesn't make sense.
- 37:03Maria Pena: And apparently, this portrait appears out of nowhere.
- 37:10Maria Pena: Like, you burn it, and it reappears like a phoenix.
- 37:15Maria Pena: Jesus.
- 37:16Maria Pena: Indestructible portrait.
- 37:18Tad Eggleston: And this is where we start… start our, our, our…
- 37:21Tad Eggleston: I don't think they've started talking again.
- 37:24Tad Eggleston: But this is where it starts becoming… it'll be a year when the three daughters stop speaking to one another.
- 37:31Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 37:32Maria Pena: So this is a year before.
- 37:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 37:35Maria Pena: It's like a timeline to… to them not talking to each other.
- 37:43Maria Pena: So… Fritzy?
- 37:47Maria Pena: Doing your psychology during the day, and then being an actress.
- 37:54Marisol: At night.
- 37:55Maria Pena: At night for her.
- 37:56Marisol: in our off time, anyway?
- 37:58Maria Pena: Enough of time, yeah.
- 38:00Maria Pena: And everybody's got an opinion about Fritzie and the… Movies.
- 38:08Maria Pena: And Petra wants to be an actress as well, but, you know, she feels like, you know, like she's a bit jealous that Fritzi's in the movies, but she doesn't want to say.
- 38:23Tad Eggleston: Petra… Seems the easiest… Seems to be the one that falls to jealousy the easiest.
- 38:32Maria Pena: Hmm. Yeah.
- 38:34Tad Eggleston: the 3.
- 38:37Maria Pena: Yeah, she's also, like, she's protective.
- 38:42Tad Eggleston: Oh, definitely.
- 38:44Maria Pena: of Fritzi, and also a little bit in competition with her.
- 38:49Maria Pena: Right.
- 38:53Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 38:55Maria Pena: So… Amen?
- 38:58Maria Pena: We got this, boys who want to have sex with the sisters, and they got two lookout boys.
- 39:05Maria Pena: One of whom is Scott.
- 39:10Tad Eggleston: I think… isn't… don't you think this is the scene that… that Luba was seeing?
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: At the beginning of the…
- 39:18Maria Pena: Yes, definitely.
- 39:19Marisol: Yeah, for sure.
- 39:20Maria Pena: Luba. Luba, that's the… that's right, that's the… that's where Luba got down.
- 39:28Maria Pena: Sort of teleported to or whatever by the aliens.
- 39:33Maria Pena: We didn't mention the aliens, there were aliens involved.
- 39:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 39:37Maria Pena: Yeah, and Scott… Yeah, he gets… this guy with this.
- 39:47Tad Eggleston: This is…
- 39:48Maria Pena: this…
- 39:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah, maybe this is why,
- 39:53Tad Eggleston: Scott always treats her bad, is… is the… the…
- 40:00Tad Eggleston: Small dick guy made him watch the blowjob.
- 40:04Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 40:05Maria Pena: And he was upset, like, he was…
- 40:07Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 40:08Maria Pena: Crying.
- 40:11Maria Pena: Yeah, so obviously Scott was a sensitive kid.
- 40:19Maria Pena: It feels like, Fritzy,
- 40:26Maria Pena: Affected a lot of guys during her.
- 40:30Marisol: her use.
- 40:31Maria Pena: In your… yeah, during your teenage years.
- 40:34Maria Pena: Because you've got… they've got the handsome guy in the other one.
- 40:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, small dick guy.
- 40:45Maria Pena: And so…
- 40:45Tad Eggleston: here.
- 40:47Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 40:50Maria Pena: Like, we think… I thought he was dead.
- 40:53Maria Pena: But then, fritzie says, oh, Matt's moving, we don't have to call the police.
- 41:00Maria Pena: So he's still alive.
- 41:04Maria Pena: And it is a very bad depiction of surfing.
- 41:08Maria Pena: Well, I guess it could be. Yeah, I think a bit more research should have been done. That one might be better.
- 41:16Tad Eggleston: Are you saying you don't think that Beto's a surfer?
- 41:20Maria Pena: Yeah, I don't think Pedro's a surfer.
- 41:22Maria Pena: That's funny. Definitely… that looks very odd.
- 41:31Maria Pena: It'll.
- 41:32Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 41:37Maria Pena: So there's Scott again.
- 41:39Maria Pena: And and the girls kind of rope them into confronting this… awful.
- 41:50Maria Pena: rock and roll guy. So, Scott's a new, new, new, what is it, new wavy kind of guy in his music, and this…
- 42:00Maria Pena: And the other guys, like, are the Eagles, you know, like, rock and roll.
- 42:05Maria Pena: And it's this era when there were all these new things happening, like there was punk rock, old rock, you know, classic rock was still around, and then there was disco.
- 42:17Maria Pena: This is, very, you know, it's kind of like a historical kind of…
- 42:26Maria Pena: Bit of an analysis of… not an analysis, but it sort of… it's touching on that.
- 42:33Maria Pena: Dit.
- 42:34Maria Pena: Era when old rock was dying, and disco took over, and then punk rock came, and… Replace this cone.
- 42:44Tad Eggleston: Ritzy's totally punk rock.
- 42:47Maria Pena: Yeah. Buck Rock… Is that the same guy?
- 42:52Maria Pena: That guy with the… is that the same guy that was rock and roll before? Look at his teeth.
- 42:58Tad Eggleston: I think it is.
- 42:59Marisol: Maybe.
- 42:59Maria Pena: Yeah, so he's changed to punk rock.
- 43:02Tad Eggleston: Well, he goes… he goes wherever the boobs and pussy are.
- 43:09Marisol: Oh, yeah, it is the same guy.
- 43:11Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 43:14Maria Pena: So it's just everybody just changed the music that they liked, and…
- 43:21Maria Pena: I guess Scott went from… Devo to punk, which is totally different.
- 43:28Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 43:31Maria Pena: Things as well.
- 43:37Marisol: Now, at this point, at this next page, our… I forget, if,
- 43:44Marisol: when exactly Petra and her husband separated.
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 43:49Maria Pena: Hmm…
- 43:49Marisol: Had to have been after this, right?
- 43:52Tad Eggleston: I think so.
- 43:54Maria Pena: Yeah, because it's still… Together there, by the looks of it.
- 44:03Maria Pena: And, and Petra hasn't had her reduction there yet. Oh, that's true.
- 44:10Maria Pena: And then she's got the reduction in this one.
- 44:17Maria Pena: And we got.
- 44:21Tad Eggleston: Chapter 3. They're all together.
- 44:24Maria Pena: It's true.
- 44:33Maria Pena: Then Luba… So this is still sort of all revolving around Fritzy doing movies, making movies.
- 44:41Marisol: Yes.
- 44:42Maria Pena: and being objectified and stuff, because, Luba tells him about this dream, And Fritz.
- 44:49Maria Pena: And Petra was skating, and Fritz was naked.
- 44:53Maria Pena: And… Fritz gets, upset.
- 44:58Maria Pena: Because it feels like it's so…
- 45:01Maria Pena: There's this sort of constant battering of her about being an actress.
- 45:10Maria Pena: Don't you think, like.
- 45:11Tad Eggleston: I really hurt her feelings here, too.
- 45:13Marisol: Hmm.
- 45:14Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 45:18Maria Pena: Pretty sure it was, like, a bit of jealousy and…
- 45:20Tad Eggleston: about me, and I told the director, more me, and then, meanwhile, Fritz was naked.
- 45:25Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 45:28Maria Pena: Yes, I see that the two that are not in the movies are kind of…
- 45:33Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 45:34Maria Pena: having feelings about it, I think, anyway.
- 45:36Maria Pena: Maybe a bit of jealousy, a bit of…
- 45:40Maria Pena: For sure. I'm jealous.
- 45:41Marisol: on Petra's part.
- 45:43Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 45:44Maria Pena: But, you know, even Luba, that dream, is telling you that in her subconscious, she's like, what about me, what about me, you know?
- 45:52Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 45:56Maria Pena: And then Petra says something really nice to her, she says, you know, You're gonna be fine.
- 46:02Maria Pena: You're gonna make a big splash.
- 46:06Tad Eggleston: But then it… it will be the next day when the three daughters stop speaking to one another.
- 46:12Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 46:12Tad Eggleston: for another time.
- 46:14Maria Pena: Please tell us a story, what happened?
- 46:16Marisol: Yeah, I wanna know what happens.
- 46:19Tad Eggleston: is great
- 46:26Tad Eggleston: Honestly, I'm not certain that we know yet.
- 46:30Maria Pena: Oh, really?
- 46:32Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 46:34Marisol: Do we know why they stopped speaking to each other?
- 46:36Tad Eggleston: that we know either why they stopped speaking together, or that they've started speaking together again. I feel like that came up the last time I talked to Beto.
- 46:46Maria Pena: I love this page.
- 46:48Tad Eggleston: This is a good pick.
- 46:48Marisol: Yeah.
- 46:49Maria Pena: Oh, I love that Fritzi at the bottom and the middle there. That is a gorgeous.
- 46:54Marisol: Oh, it's beautiful.
- 46:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 46:57Tad Eggleston: In fact…
- 46:58Maria Pena: I'm gonna back this page as my favorite.
- 47:02Maria Pena: Beto.
- 47:04Maria Pena: Panel.
- 47:06Maria Pena: Because I think he put extra…
- 47:09Maria Pena: extra care into this one. It's all very… like, it's a real…
- 47:18Maria Pena: Really nice.
- 47:22Marisol: I think mine will have to be the last panel of the issue.
- 47:26Marisol: The one where they're all three in the pool, because they just… they just look so happy.
- 47:31Tad Eggleston: Me too.
- 47:35Marisol: I love that Fritz just jumped in.
- 47:38Marisol: With all her clothes on.
- 47:40Marisol: And they're just hanging out in the pool, having a good time, having a good laugh.
- 47:46Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 47:47Marisol: And just the ominous… Sentence of, this is the last day.
- 47:52Marisol: They speak to each other.
- 47:55Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 47:56Marisol: Kind of makes it a bittersweet panel. It's like, oh, they're having such a great time, and then what happened?
- 48:03Marisol: After that, that they stopped talking.
- 48:08Tad Eggleston: Yep, I'm with you. That's my panel.
- 48:11Tad Eggleston: Are you doing the whole back page, Maria, or are you just doing.
- 48:15Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 48:15Tad Eggleston: Fritz down here.
- 48:17Maria Pena: No, I think the whole back page, I think, is really going to town with everything on this, like, every…
- 48:25Maria Pena: Drawing on that page is just specially… Nice.
- 48:30Maria Pena: But I…
- 48:31Maria Pena: If I had to pick a part of the page, it would be that depiction of Ritzy down there, but…
- 48:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, that is really kind of outstanding.
- 48:40Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 48:43Tad Eggleston: though, also, and I feel…
- 48:45Maria Pena: So that top right.
- 48:46Tad Eggleston: Fritz… Fritz's Marilyn Monroe in both that
- 48:50Tad Eggleston: Bottom panel and that top right panel.
- 48:53Maria Pena: upright, yeah.
- 49:01Tad Eggleston: That feels like a Misfits Maryland, and that feels like, like,
- 49:06Tad Eggleston: Gentlemen prefer blondes, or diamonds, or a girl's best friend.
- 49:11Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 49:15Maria Pena: Yep.
- 49:18Marisol: Really nice, though.
- 49:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah… alrighty… Back to… Figure out some Jaime.
- 49:31Maria Pena: Oh, so this one is hard in that… There's so many good panels.
- 49:37Maria Pena: They're all… it's like a Beatles album, it's all hits.
- 49:41Tad Eggleston: It is, but I think… I still think I'm gonna go…
- 49:46Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna go with two panels, but I'm gonna go with a stacked pair rather than a next-to-each-other pair. I'm gonna do the bottom right… er, bottom left two.
- 49:56Tad Eggleston: Right here on the.
- 49:57Maria Pena: First page.
- 49:58Tad Eggleston: H.
- 49:59Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 50:01Marisol: Those are nice.
- 50:03Marisol: Just drunk Maggie on the lawn.
- 50:05Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 50:09Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 50:10Marisol: Mine will have to be the page after this, just the whole sequence.
- 50:14Marisol: The creepy sequence with the dog.
- 50:17Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 50:20Marisol: It's… this is not the first time we've seen this dog, but it just seems like a recurring…
- 50:26Marisol: ill omen.
- 50:28Tad Eggleston: those.
- 50:28Maria Pena: So…
- 50:29Tad Eggleston: Just doing the stacked dog, or are you doing the back and forth with Maggie?
- 50:35Marisol: The back and forth, so the whole page, essentially.
- 50:38Tad Eggleston: All of the page.
- 50:40Marisol: Yep.
- 50:41Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 50:42Maria Pena: Excuse me.
- 50:45Maria Pena: Well, I think, Jaime was, particularly inspired with that.
- 50:51Maria Pena: Flashback. I…
- 50:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 50:54Maria Pena: I really like Maggie coming out of the house drunk, but… Yeah.
- 50:59Maria Pena: Like, it would… minute I saw that panel, I thought, oh, yeah.
- 51:04Maria Pena: Like, I just love that.
- 51:06Tad Eggleston: So, coming out of the…
- 51:07Marisol: I was drunk.
- 51:08Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 51:08Tad Eggleston: Adding one, or, or, or… Are they stumbling drunk, or they're coming out the door?
- 51:14Maria Pena: The top, they're coming at the top. Yeah, the top right, yeah.
- 51:22Tad Eggleston: Yep, so we got… we got all of our… our favorite Jaime panels in the first two pages.
- 51:29Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 51:30Marisol: Started off strong, this issue.
- 51:33Maria Pena: I mean.
- 51:34Tad Eggleston: And that has nothing to do with there not being lots of great pain.
- 51:38Maria Pena: No, no.
- 51:39Tad Eggleston: panels after that.
- 51:42Maria Pena: Absolutely, like…
- 51:44Tad Eggleston: It's, it's only that, that those were really, really kind of outstanding.
- 51:51Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 51:51Marisol: They stood out, for sure.
- 51:54Tad Eggleston: So… let me… feel like…
- 52:01Marisol: Season number 10.
- 52:03Tad Eggleston: Issue 10 is a double-sized issue.
- 52:07Tad Eggleston: Okay. So, do we want… 2…
- 52:11Tad Eggleston: Issue 10 and a Luba Comics and Stories, or do we want to skip Luba Comics and Stories for next week and just do Issue 10?
- 52:19Maria Pena: Yeah, let's just do one. Let's just do one.
- 52:22Marisol: Especially since it's double.
- 52:23Maria Pena: 60 pages.
- 52:25Tad Eggleston: 60 pages.
- 52:27Marisol: Whoa.
- 52:27Tad Eggleston: Wait till we get to news stories, where they're all 100 pages.
- 52:31Marisol: Oh, boy.
- 52:33Maria Pena: Wow.
- 52:34Tad Eggleston: Thankfully, there's only 8 of those.
- 52:36Maria Pena: Okay.
- 52:39Marisol: Well, that softens the blow a bit. There's not too many of those.
- 52:44Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 52:45Tad Eggleston: Alright, so next week we've got… Issue 10, we got some.
- 52:50Tad Eggleston: stay… the longer Julio stayed than.
- 52:55Marisol: Yeah.
- 52:55Tad Eggleston: in a while.
- 52:57Marisol: More magazine.
- 52:58Maria Pena: Maybe, maybe it'll all come to roost.
- 53:01Maria Pena: Eventually.
- 53:03Maria Pena: Julius Dave?
- 53:08Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 53:09Marisol: Cool.
- 53:11Tad Eggleston: Never happened, too.
- 53:16Marisol: We're finally.
- 53:17Maria Pena: That's a seat.
- 53:17Marisol: They're on a stigmata again, after so long.
- 53:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah…
- 53:22Marisol: That's a surprise. And more Roy!
- 53:31Tad Eggleston: Some more Julio's Day.
- 53:34Marisol: And then I think this is the conclusion of the…
- 53:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the conclusion…
- 53:38Marisol: For the unknown?
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 53:46Maria Pena: Looks very conclusive, that's…
- 53:50Tad Eggleston: the unknown conclusion.
- 53:54Maria Pena: Excellent.
- 53:55Marisol: Oh, man.
- 53:57Tad Eggleston: And some reflections.
- 54:03Maria Pena: more deeply.
- 54:04Maria Pena: T-shirts.
- 54:07Maria Pena: Alright.
- 54:09Tad Eggleston: I have to find this.
- 54:12Maria Pena: room.
- 54:12Tad Eggleston: That's all I know.
- 54:13Maria Pena: tears.
- 54:14Tad Eggleston: Cheers.
- 54:15Tad Eggleston: Matt Baker?
- 54:25Marisol: Very nice.
- 54:26Tad Eggleston: Very cool.
- 54:28Tad Eggleston: Matt Baker does good stuff.
- 54:31Maria Pena: I love, love, romance calls.
- 54:32Tad Eggleston: Oh, and we've got a, some lists… From them as well.
- 54:40Tad Eggleston: Favorite comics, some favorite artists…
- 54:45Maria Pena: Excellent.
- 54:49Tad Eggleston: So, yeah… Fun issue.
- 54:53Marisol: the letters.
- 54:55Maria Pena: I look forward to it.
- 54:57Marisol: A big issue, but yeah.
- 54:59Tad Eggleston: Thank you.
- 55:00Marisol: Next time.
- 55:01Tad Eggleston: So, for Maria and Marisol, this has been the Love & Rockets
- 55:05Tad Eggleston: Book Club on 22 panels, and we will see you after the next page.
