- Lucas: Velkommen til Learn Danish with Fexingo, episode 119. Luna, ready to learn some library vocabulary? Luna: Definitely, Lucas. I love libraries, but I've never tried speaking Danish in one. What's the first phrase? Lucas: Let's start with the most important one: 'Jeg vil gerne låne en bog.' That means 'I would like to borrow a book.' Say it with me: Jeg vil gerne låne en bog. Luna: Jeg vil gerne låne en bog. Hmm, that's a mouthful. 'Låne' is borrow, right? Lucas: Exactly. 'Låne' means borrow. And 'en bog' is a book. So 'Jeg vil gerne låne en bog.' Now you try. Luna: Jeg vil gerne låne en bog. Jeg vil gerne låne en bog. That's actually fun to say. Lucas: You nailed it. Now, if you need help finding a book, you can ask: 'Hvordan finder jeg en bog?' That's 'How do I find a book?' Listen: Hvordan finder jeg en bog? Luna: Hvordan finder jeg en bog? Hvordan finder jeg en bog? It sounds like 'how-dan finner yai en bow'. Lucas: Pretty close. The 'jeg' is pronounced 'yai', yes. So 'Hvordan finder jeg en bog?' Good job. Luna: Okay, so I walk in, I want to borrow a book, I look for it… then what if I can't find it? Can I ask if they have it? Lucas: Great question. You can say 'Har I denne bog?' meaning 'Do you have this book?' 'Har I denne bog?' Let's break it down: 'Har' is have, 'I' is you, 'denne' is this, 'bog' is book. So 'Har I denne bog?'. Luna: Har I denne bog? Har I denne bog? That's easy. 'Har' is like 'have', 'I' is like 'ee'? Lucas: Exactly. 'I' is pronounced 'ee'. So 'Har I denne bog?' Now, once you find the book, you might ask about the loan period: 'Hvor længe må jeg låne den?' That's 'How long can I borrow it?' Listen: Hvor længe må jeg låne den? Luna: Hvor længe må jeg låne den? Hvor længe… that's 'how long'? Lucas: Yes, 'hvor længe' is 'how long'. And 'må' means 'may' or 'can'. So 'Hvor længe må jeg låne den?' It's a useful one. Luna: Hvor længe må jeg låne den? Hvor længe må jeg låne den? Oof, that's a lot of words. But I think I got it. Lucas: You're doing great. Let's practice a mini conversation. I'll be the librarian, you're the visitor. You come in and say you want to borrow a book. Luna: Okay. Hej, jeg vil gerne låne en bog. Lucas: Godt. Then I ask, 'Hvordan finder du den?' How do you find it? Actually, you'd ask me first: 'Hvordan finder jeg en bog?' Luna: Right! Hvordan finder jeg en bog? Lucas: Perfect. I show you where the books are. Then you find one and ask, 'Har I denne bog?' Luna: Har I denne bog? Lucas: I say, 'Ja, den har vi.' Then you ask about the loan period: 'Hvor længe må jeg låne den?' Luna: Hvor længe må jeg låne den? Lucas: I answer, 'En måned.' And you say 'Tak for hjælpen' – 'Thanks for the help.' Luna: Tak for hjælpen. That's a nice one to end with. Lucas: Exactly. So we have five phrases today: 'Jeg vil gerne låne en bog', 'Hvordan finder jeg en bog?', 'Har I denne bog?', 'Hvor længe må jeg låne den?', and 'Tak for hjælpen'. Let's review them. Luna: Jeg vil gerne låne en bog. Hvordan finder jeg en bog? Har I denne bog? Hvor længe må jeg låne den? Tak for hjælpen. Lucas: Fantastic. You sound like a natural. Luna: Thanks. You know, I've been using Fexingo to practice, and it's really helped. If others have gotten value from these episodes, maybe they could support the show too. A couple of dollars a month at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo keeps these going. Lucas: That's a great point. It's listeners like you that make this possible. And even a small contribution helps us keep making episodes. Luna: Yeah, it's totally optional, but if you've learned something, consider it. Anyway, back to the library. Lucas, what if I need a library card? Lucas: Good question. You might say 'Jeg har brug for et lånerkort' – 'I need a library card'. But that's for next time. For now, practice the five phrases we learned today. Repeat them a few times, and they'll stick. Luna: I will. Tak for hjælpen, Lucas. Lucas: Selv tak, Luna. And to our listeners, keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Hej hej.
