- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We're here at Not So Fast. We've got a show
- 0:11Speaker 1: in the books.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Day two, Pearl. I promise it's going to be our
- 0:13Speaker 2: best show ever. And I just heard NBC management said
- 0:17Speaker 2: they are extending us for a second week.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Wow. What kind of feedback did you get on our
- 0:21Speaker 1: first show?
- 0:21Speaker 2: A lot of feedback. My mom, ironically or oddly, my
- 0:25Speaker 2: mom said, you look good, your hair look good, and
- 0:26Speaker 2: she liked your sport coat. She asked me why I
- 0:28Speaker 2: don't wear a sport coat.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Mixed reviews on the socials about the sports coat.
- 0:32Speaker 2: You look good, like a substitute teacher-ish, but it's not
- 0:34Speaker 2: a brand.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone keeps saying substitute teacher, but I don't think
- 0:37Speaker 1: they meant that as a compliment.
- 0:38Speaker 2: We'll take it.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Okay. One thing we love here on Not So Fast
- 0:42Speaker 1: is we need a bad guy, especially in college football,
- 0:45Speaker 1: such an emotional sport. I think we have one, Paul.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin. What's going on down there in the bayou?
- 0:50Speaker 2: So the Lane Kiffin story with the SEC and letting
- 0:53Speaker 2: pros go from pro rosters back to the SEC is
- 0:56Speaker 2: in week three. It's a perfect August story. And if
- 0:58Speaker 2: you think about it, you know, it's perfect because it's
- 1:00Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin, and he's This SEC last week gave some
- 1:03Speaker 2: rules about not letting him back, and Lane Kevin's like, yeah,
- 1:07Speaker 2: I heard your rules, and I'm going to keep talking
- 1:08Speaker 2: about it. I don't care.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that Lane is not backing down. He
- 1:12Speaker 1: actually talked about this and explained his process about how
- 1:16Speaker 1: he's going about this with the current team.
- 1:20Speaker 3: There's a lot of factors into it and different things,
- 1:24Speaker 3: and one that I struggled too was, okay, this late,
- 1:28Speaker 3: even though that's what you do in the NFL— And
- 1:30Speaker 3: there's an argument these players are paid like that. And
- 1:33Speaker 3: it's what happened yesterday in the NFL. New players come
- 1:36Speaker 3: in and take people's spots and added to rosters. And
- 1:39Speaker 3: other guys have been there working. So I met with
- 1:43Speaker 3: our leadership committee of our players. And I asked them,
- 1:47Speaker 3: it's your team. What do you want to do? If
- 1:51Speaker 3: these players are allowed to be added to rosters, what
- 1:55Speaker 3: do you want to do? And every one of them
- 1:57Speaker 3: was emphatic about– They can help us win, bring them.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Man, you're jumping out of your skin there during Lane talking.
- 2:06Speaker 1: You don't exactly buy that, Paul?
- 2:09Speaker 2: That was the first time seeing that. I heard it,
- 2:10Speaker 2: but that felt very heartfelt by Lane Kiffin. You know,
- 2:13Speaker 2: he's very, you know, I'm struggling with this decision. I'm
- 2:17Speaker 2: going to throw the BS flag on this because a
- 2:18Speaker 2: couple things. If Lane Kiffin, the boss of LSU football,
- 2:21Speaker 2: walks in the locker room and says, guys, are you
- 2:23Speaker 2: okay with me bringing guys in from play rosters? Is
- 2:26Speaker 2: some freshman four-string tight end going to go, yeah, coach,
- 2:28Speaker 2: I got a problem with it? No, you've got to say,
- 2:31Speaker 2: Let's go Tigers. You've got to back whatever the coach does.
- 2:33Speaker 2: But someone's losing a roster spot or someone's losing their
- 2:36Speaker 2: place in line for whenever he brings people back. And
- 2:38Speaker 2: I think he's using his players agreeing with this to
- 2:41Speaker 2: back his... I guess not his decision, but staying with
- 2:44Speaker 2: this course of action.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Well, that's interesting. You actually believe that he actually did
- 2:47Speaker 1: talk to players? I think he might have talked to
- 2:48Speaker 1: Sam Leavitt, the quarterback. Hey, do you want me to
- 2:50Speaker 1: bring back this really good tight end? Sam's like, yes. Yeah, sure.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I don't think he went to the four-string tight end. But, Paul,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I don't think this whole issue is going to change
- 2:58Speaker 1: the face of college football maybe as much as we're
- 3:00Speaker 1: talking about it.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It's a big story.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It's a huge story. But let me give you some
- 3:03Speaker 1: numbers on how many guys will actually be playing college football.
- 3:06Speaker 1: The other day, the NFL cut from 90 to 53.
- 3:09Speaker 1: That means 1,184 players became available, theoretically. But most of
- 3:14Speaker 1: them are not eligible to go back. And a lot
- 3:16Speaker 1: of them actually were picked up by practice squads or
- 3:18Speaker 1: still trying to get in the NFL. I think a
- 3:20Speaker 1: fair number is 20 guys at most are going to
- 3:24Speaker 1: go from NFL camp to the college game.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So this is more about the concept and people being
- 3:27Speaker 2: bothered by the concept of a pro going back to college.
- 3:30Speaker 2: But it's a perfect August story because it's Lane Kiffin.
- 3:32Speaker 2: It's the SEC. It's professionalism and amateurism. But Lane Kiffin
- 3:36Speaker 2: continued to talk about it. And he has a game
- 3:38Speaker 2: against Clemson this weekend and he has to turn in
- 3:40Speaker 2: a roster. He talked about that.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I feel like my decision should always be made in
- 3:47Speaker 3: the best interest of the players that sit in this
- 3:49Speaker 3: team room and not. but for my reputation and how
- 3:54Speaker 3: the decisions play in the national media or other fan bases.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I've never been that way, and that could be wrong.
- 4:00Speaker 3: It's probably part of my story why it is the
- 4:02Speaker 3: way it is. But those players and the people that
- 4:05Speaker 3: hire me always know he's constantly trying to do the
- 4:07Speaker 3: best thing for them. So I struggled with it a lot.
- 4:13Speaker 2: He struggled with it a lot. All right, so here's
- 4:16Speaker 2: the thing. SEC rules say that Lane Kiffin has to
- 4:18Speaker 2: turn in a roster by Friday. Like, you know, injuries,
- 4:20Speaker 2: who's active, who's not active. They have a game against
- 4:23Speaker 2: Clemson on Saturday. It's probably the most competitive game of
- 4:25Speaker 2: this college weekend. Week one, by the way. They're a
- 4:28Speaker 2: 10-point favorite. This sets up as an absolute disaster possibility
- 4:32Speaker 2: for Lane Kiffin because if somehow they lose to Clemson,
- 4:34Speaker 2: who most people think is not the Clemson of five
- 4:36Speaker 2: years ago, which they're not. If somehow he, it's going
- 4:39Speaker 2: to be like, ha, ha, we told you so. You've
- 4:41Speaker 2: been focused on all the wrong things.
- 4:43Speaker 1: That's funny. So you think that maybe the national media
- 4:46Speaker 1: or just national fans are rooting against Lane? That's probably true.
- 4:49Speaker 1: He is the bad guy. You know, it's funny. Brian
- 4:51Speaker 1: Kelly was the same way. I think a lot of
- 4:52Speaker 1: people did not want to see Brian Kelly succeed in LSU.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Oh, a lot of people were bothered by Brian Kelly.
- 4:58Speaker 4: He felt like Mr.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Notre Dame.
- 4:59Speaker 2: His last name is Kelly, for God's sakes. And he said,
- 5:01Speaker 2: I left Notre Dame to compete for national championships at LSU.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And look where late Brian Kelly is. He's on CBS
- 5:07Speaker 2: doing second-tier games while Marcus Freeman is probably going to
- 5:10Speaker 2: the playoffs again.
- 5:11Speaker 1: You know, one thing Wayne said, he said, I don't
- 5:12Speaker 1: care what others think about me. I actually think that
- 5:15Speaker 1: might be true because... He better not. He better not.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I mean, going back, remember when he was the Raiders coach?
- 5:20Speaker 1: Remember when he was fired on the tarmac at USC?
- 5:23Speaker 1: I mean, this guy's been through a lot already. He's
- 5:25Speaker 1: not that old, but I feel like he's a little impervious.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Remember after he got fired at USC, the phrase tarmac
- 5:30Speaker 2: became a way to get fired, like if he got
- 5:32Speaker 2: fired after the jet?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Here's Lane Kiffin, I think, in the locker room. It's
- 5:35Speaker 2: not play like a champion today. When at the highest level,
- 5:38Speaker 2: you have to become a villain in someone else's story.
- 5:41Speaker 2: LSU football, he's embracing it.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I think we should be pro Lane Kiffin here. I
- 5:45Speaker 1: think we're going to embrace Lane Kiffin.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I love villains in football. I mean, Steve Spurrier was
- 5:50Speaker 2: a button pusher back in the day at South Carolina,
- 5:52Speaker 2: back at Florida. You love guys.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So if they lose to Clemson, we should say we're
- 5:56Speaker 1: not going to rip Lane Kiffin. Let's just promise right
- 5:58Speaker 1: now that we're going to be nice.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Right, and if you love college football like we do,
- 6:01Speaker 2: you want Lane Kiffin to be undefeated going back to
- 6:03Speaker 2: play Ole Miss in a few weeks. That's what you want.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yeah, we get great quotes.
- 6:07Speaker 2: All right, let's get to some pro football here. We
- 6:09Speaker 2: have some pending situations in football, and there's a bunch
- 6:12Speaker 2: of them. But, you know, the quarterback situations, there's some
- 6:14Speaker 2: cuts here. There's some people being released. Your boy Joe Milton,
- 6:17Speaker 2: no longer a cowboy. But let's start with the Atlanta Falcons.
- 6:20Speaker 2: A lot of mixed reports about what the Falcons are
- 6:22Speaker 2: going to do, and Tua plays a lot in the
- 6:24Speaker 2: last game. Michael Penix, is he healthy? If he's healthy,
- 6:27Speaker 2: will he start? If you were running the Falcons and
- 6:29Speaker 2: Penix was declared ready to go, what would you do
- 6:32Speaker 2: and what will they do?
- 6:33Speaker 1: I mean, if two is going to play at all
- 6:35Speaker 1: this year, Paul, it's as a placeholder. This has to
- 6:38Speaker 1: be Michael Penix's job. Not only is he the more
- 6:40Speaker 1: talented quarterback physically and probably all around physically, He's coming
- 6:45Speaker 1: up on his contract. At some point, you have to
- 6:47Speaker 1: make a decision on Michael Penix. Are you going to
- 6:49Speaker 1: build around this guy, or are you going to draft
- 6:51Speaker 1: another quarterback moving forward? That time is now, honestly, and
- 6:54Speaker 1: I think most importantly, Penix gives him a better chance
- 6:57Speaker 1: to win immediately. Now, the issue is he can't stay healthy.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's never been a judgment of audibility. I'll go
- 7:03Speaker 2: back with the Atlanta Falcons to the decision to take
- 7:05Speaker 2: Penix out of the draft. When he got drafted, you
- 7:08Speaker 2: and I were at that draft like, what are they doing?
- 7:10Speaker 2: They took Penix out. And he fell to them, or
- 7:12Speaker 2: whatever you want to say, but they already had Kirk
- 7:14Speaker 2: Cousins under a big contract. They said, well, we'll draft Penix.
- 7:17Speaker 2: He'll be the future. Let him rest with that knee
- 7:19Speaker 2: injury at Washington. And now it's like, let him play
- 7:22Speaker 2: a full season. See what you got. He was a
- 7:24Speaker 2: very competitive, I mean, a competitor in college.
- 7:27Speaker 1: No, he's got a hammer for an arm. He really
- 7:29Speaker 1: throws the ball well. I like Michael Penix a lot. Honestly,
- 7:33Speaker 1: if you play him 17 games, the odds of him
- 7:35Speaker 1: getting to Week 18, what do you think?
- 7:37Speaker 2: But let it happen. Let it play out. It's like
- 7:39Speaker 2: the Deshaun Watson thing. Let it happen one time, and
- 7:42Speaker 2: then if you're going to move on, you're going to
- 7:43Speaker 2: move on. Let's get to the next quarterback situation. We
- 7:45Speaker 2: already talked about this on Not So Fast. Mendoza will
- 7:48Speaker 2: probably be not the starter, as we said with the Raiders.
- 7:51Speaker 2: It's probably going to be Kirk Cousins. Any chance there's
- 7:54Speaker 2: a curveball, and how do you see this playing out?
- 7:56Speaker 1: I don't think there's a curveball because Mendoza did struggle
- 7:58Speaker 1: in the preseason. Obviously, he doesn't really know how to
- 8:00Speaker 1: read defenses yet, but I think we're going to see
- 8:03Speaker 1: Fernando Mendoza sooner rather than later, in part because the Raiders'
- 8:06Speaker 1: schedule is a little light on the start, and then
- 8:09Speaker 1: it gets really, really hard. October's brutal. And I do
- 8:12Speaker 1: generally feel that quarterbacks might learn better under fire. If
- 8:16Speaker 1: we're talking about year two for Fernando Mendoza, is he
- 8:19Speaker 1: going to be better off like Patrick Mahomes not playing
- 8:21Speaker 1: at all? Or will he be better off getting a
- 8:23Speaker 1: little bit of action? I'm of the school that you
- 8:26Speaker 1: throw him in, let him learn on the job.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You know, while I agree with you that he's not
- 8:30Speaker 2: the flappable type, you can be unflappable. Can you be flappable?
- 8:34Speaker 2: Fernando Mendoza seems like a cool customer who would take
- 8:36Speaker 2: a rough week in stride. and just crush the press conference.
- 8:39Speaker 1: But by the way, it's funny because right now it
- 8:41Speaker 1: seems like it's Kirk Cousins. Didn't we say the same
- 8:43Speaker 1: thing about Kurt Warner with the Giants? Didn't we say
- 8:45Speaker 1: the same thing about Kirk Cousins with Michael Pettis behind
- 8:47Speaker 1: him in Atlanta? Again and again and again, the veteran
- 8:50Speaker 1: always loses the job.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Could you see them putting Mendoza for week one as
- 8:54Speaker 2: the third string?
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yep.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Because Aiden O'Connell out of Purdue, he's had some nice
- 8:58Speaker 2: days there. You put Aiden O'Connell second string. Then if
- 9:01Speaker 2: somehow Kirk Cousins gets hurt in the first quarter of
- 9:04Speaker 2: week one, like an Aaron Rodgers situation, You don't have
- 9:07Speaker 2: to bring in Mendoza and blow your whole plan up.
- 9:09Speaker 1: No, that makes perfect sense. Aiden O'Connell's played a lot
- 9:11Speaker 1: of football. That's actually against the Dolphins, I believe. That's
- 9:14Speaker 1: a game. If I'm Mendoza, I want to play against
- 9:16Speaker 1: my hometown team because you can win that one.
- 9:18Speaker 2: All right, let's get to a couple more situations. Now, C.J. Stroud,
- 9:21Speaker 2: he's not in danger of losing his job. That playoff
- 9:24Speaker 2: game last year, it looked like he had gloves on
- 9:26Speaker 2: his hands. But C.J. Stroud, this is a decision year
- 9:29Speaker 2: for him. It's a contract year for him. They did
- 9:31Speaker 2: not give him the big deal after year three. When
- 9:34Speaker 2: you look at C.J. Stroud and how they're going to
- 9:36Speaker 2: handle him this season, do you think it's like full
- 9:38Speaker 2: speed ahead, great defense, last year was an anomaly, or
- 9:41Speaker 2: they may look at C.J. Stroud and say, we have
- 9:43Speaker 2: a winning team here on defense. If you don't step up,
- 9:46Speaker 2: we may have to make a decision now.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I don't think they're going to pull
- 9:50Speaker 1: him for backups.
- 9:51Speaker 2: No chance.
- 9:52Speaker 1: No, in my mind, no chance. Now, I think it
- 9:54Speaker 1: was him who cost the team in the playoffs. He
- 9:56Speaker 1: used to be able to say, oh, the O-line's terrible,
- 9:58Speaker 1: but now C.J. Stroud, it's all on him. You're right,
- 10:01Speaker 1: he doesn't have to be great. A lot of people
- 10:03Speaker 1: are picking them for the Super Bowl. I do not
- 10:06Speaker 1: trust C.J. Stroud. I really don't. I thought he panicked
- 10:08Speaker 1: in a big moment last year in the divisional playoffs.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I loved him as a rookie. I loved him at
- 10:14Speaker 1: Ohio State. He has a lot to prove to me.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Sometimes it's like a body-switching movie from year one to
- 10:18Speaker 2: year three. That guy, his first year in the league,
- 10:21Speaker 2: remember Jayden Daniels' rookie year?
- 10:22Speaker 1: C.J.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Stroud did that a year before, and there was a
- 10:25Speaker 2: time where, who are you going to start your team with?
- 10:27Speaker 1: C.J.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Stroud after his rookie year, but it's like Davis Mills,
- 10:30Speaker 2: not a household name, but a high-end backup for the Texans,
- 10:34Speaker 2: if they are somehow one and three, and C.J. Stroud
- 10:38Speaker 2: is underwhelming, I could see that Let's throw Davis Mills
- 10:41Speaker 2: in there and see if we can right the ship
- 10:42Speaker 2: in October and bring back the starter or let it
- 10:45Speaker 2: play out. Hey, I know it was an injury situation,
- 10:48Speaker 2: but Nick Foles pulled it off.
- 10:49Speaker 1: That 3-0 was a thin 3-0. That was the defense
- 10:52Speaker 1: work right there. I watched those games.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Only you could poo-poo a 3-0.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I mean, it's Davis Mills. We've seen them for a
- 10:58Speaker 1: long time now. They need Stroud. I mean, what's the
- 11:01Speaker 1: goal here if you're Houston? It's not about making the playoffs.
- 11:03Speaker 1: They've proven they can do that. They have to win
- 11:05Speaker 1: the Super Bowl, and that means great quarterback play. They've
- 11:07Speaker 1: got to ride with Stroud, but it makes me nervous
- 11:10Speaker 1: because that defense is so good, Paul.
- 11:13Speaker 2: All right, we got up against a break, but I
- 11:14Speaker 2: want to ask you about the Steelers. Let's say the
- 11:15Speaker 2: Steelers somehow, and they never do, start out 1-4, and
- 11:19Speaker 2: Rodgers is playing C-level football. What happens there?
- 11:22Speaker 1: See, with Aaron Rodgers, there's no way the backup's coming in. A,
- 11:25Speaker 1: I don't think Mike McCarthy could do that to him,
- 11:27Speaker 1: the new coach.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Not in the first two months.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And Rodgers, even when he's bad, his numbers are pretty good.
- 11:32Speaker 1: He was really bad with the Jets, and he ended
- 11:34Speaker 1: up having one of the best passer ratings in the league.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So I think the ceiling is pretty high with Rodgers.
- 11:38Speaker 1: He's not going anywhere.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Got it.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Got it. All right, coming up, we have a warm
- 11:43Speaker 1: take segment on Jackson Dart and the Giants. Has Jackson
- 11:46Speaker 1: finally learned how to take care of himself? Paul is skeptical.
- 11:49Speaker 1: We'll do that next. Not so fast. All right.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Crush that throw.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Jackson Dart. I don't know if that's going to work, Paul.
- 11:58Speaker 2: How many quarterbacks have X in their first name?
- 12:02Speaker 1: Max Brosberg.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Pick me up. This is your boy. Orioles center fielder
- 12:13Speaker 2: Colton Couser. He does this for a living. Robbing a
- 12:17Speaker 2: possible walk-off home run. against the padding, against your Rockies.
- 12:22Speaker 1: That's my favorite play in baseball, robbing a home run,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and this was such a critical situation. I thought he
- 12:27Speaker 1: had given up on it, and all of a sudden, boom,
- 12:28Speaker 1: he's there. What a play.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Now, we have the term walk-off, home run, walk-off hit.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Should that be a rob-off?
- 12:36Speaker 1: I don't know. That doesn't sound right. A rob-off?
- 12:38Speaker 2: I don't think a rob-off works, but it was a
- 12:39Speaker 2: rob-off for Colton Couser last night. All right, welcome back
- 12:42Speaker 2: to day two of the Up after Pearl. Here we are.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Not so fast. Let's get to it. Warm takes. That's
- 12:47Speaker 2: what we do here on the show. Sweeping the country.
- 12:49Speaker 2: My daughter said it's already taken over her high school.
- 12:52Speaker 2: All the kids are warm taking each other. Let's get
- 12:54Speaker 2: to it, Pearl. I'm going to go first.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 12:57Speaker 2: The New York Giants this year have a little bit
- 12:58Speaker 2: of new hope. If they could get Malik Nabors back
- 13:01Speaker 2: from injury, he's fantastic. John Harbaugh's there. It feels like
- 13:04Speaker 2: a new version of them. Jackson Dart had a very
- 13:06Speaker 2: good season, their quarterback, last year. Now, he was in
- 13:08Speaker 2: the blue tent a lot last year, but you kind
- 13:10Speaker 2: of like... You look at that rookie year and say, okay,
- 13:12Speaker 2: hopefully I'll learn from that. But even in the preseason
- 13:14Speaker 2: this year, you got hurt and ended up in the
- 13:16Speaker 2: blue tent in the preseason game. You can't have that.
- 13:19Speaker 2: So my thing for Jackson Dart is stop being a
- 13:21Speaker 2: tough guy. I think you are a tough guy. I
- 13:24Speaker 2: think you're a very tough quarterback. But there's only one
- 13:26Speaker 2: guy in the league who'd run without thinking about his health,
- 13:29Speaker 2: and I think it's Josh Allen. It didn't really work
- 13:31Speaker 2: for Cam Newton after a certain point. But Jackson Dart,
- 13:34Speaker 2: you're too good at what you do to not protect yourself.
- 13:37Speaker 2: You have to think of yourself like the President of
- 13:39Speaker 2: the United States. You can't risk yourself. Don't take shots
- 13:42Speaker 2: you don't need. Go back to like prime Russell Wilson
- 13:44Speaker 2: when he would run. He would run and then he'd slide.
- 13:47Speaker 2: He'd run, then he'd get out of bounds. You never
- 13:49Speaker 2: remember any Russell Wilson runs, but I remember him playing
- 13:51Speaker 2: 16 games every year. So if you're Jackson Dart, slide.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Here's the thing. His dad played for Utah Ute football
- 13:58Speaker 2: back in the day in the 90s. His dad was
- 13:59Speaker 2: a defensive back. He has DB mentality in a quarterback's body.
- 14:03Speaker 2: You've got to get rid of it, man. We know
- 14:05Speaker 2: you're tough. You want to be tough, be tough in
- 14:06Speaker 2: January during a playoff game. But if they're going to
- 14:09Speaker 2: live to see a good season, a great season, if
- 14:11Speaker 2: Jackson Dart's going to live to see a second contract,
- 14:13Speaker 2: slide a little bit, run out of bounds a little bit.
- 14:15Speaker 2: No one's going to call you soft. They'll call you smart.
- 14:17Speaker 1: You know, I remember that time where the NFL tried
- 14:19Speaker 1: to tell a mobile quarterback not to run. Every time?
- 14:22Speaker 1: And guess how many times it's worked? None times? You
- 14:25Speaker 1: can't change a quarterback's mentality about running the football ball.
- 14:28Speaker 2: How about the last two yards? How about eight yards
- 14:30Speaker 2: instead of ten?
- 14:31Speaker 1: I know what you're saying. And by the way, it's funny,
- 14:34Speaker 1: he gets hit in the pocket as well. You never
- 14:36Speaker 1: know about the Giants' offensive line. I just think he's
- 14:39Speaker 1: wired that way. When a guy's wired that way, it's
- 14:41Speaker 1: not that simple. All right. My first warm take also
- 14:45Speaker 1: involves Jackson Dart. Let's talk about quarterbacks on rookie deals.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Since 2018... Seven of eight Super Bowls have featured a
- 14:52Speaker 1: quarterback who's on a rookie deal. People forget it's the
- 14:55Speaker 1: ultimate NFL cheat code because you can build a roster
- 14:58Speaker 1: around them. And I think we're taking some teams with
- 15:00Speaker 1: rookie deal quarterbacks a little lightly this year. No one
- 15:03Speaker 1: saw New England coming last year, so you have to wonder, Paul,
- 15:06Speaker 1: who is this year's New England? Here are some of
- 15:09Speaker 1: the quarterbacks on rookie deals. Bo Nix, to me, is
- 15:12Speaker 1: the most obvious rookie deal quarterback to go to the
- 15:15Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Frankly, they should have been in the Super
- 15:17Speaker 1: Bowl last year. I think if Bo Nix was healthy
- 15:19Speaker 1: for the AFC title game, they're there. They beat New England.
- 15:22Speaker 1: But they have a lot of talent around him. They
- 15:25Speaker 1: added Jalen Waddell in Denver. But let me throw a
- 15:27Speaker 1: couple of dark horses at you. Guys on rookie deals,
- 15:30Speaker 1: possible out of nowheres. Jackson Dart, who you mentioned in
- 15:34Speaker 1: New York, they do have a Super Bowl winning coach
- 15:36Speaker 1: in John Harbaugh, and they have some talent and some
- 15:39Speaker 1: veterans around him. And one more, Tyler Shuck. The Saints
- 15:44Speaker 1: have the second easiest schedule in the NFL and in
- 15:47Speaker 1: their NFC South. They could win that division. Now, Super
- 15:50Speaker 1: Bowl seems way, way too rich. But then again, we
- 15:52Speaker 1: would never have even dreamt of Super Bowl last year
- 15:54Speaker 1: for New England. I think an easy schedule and a
- 15:56Speaker 1: quarterback on a rookie deal is a great combination.
- 15:59Speaker 2: You know, I'm going to give you your credit here
- 16:00Speaker 2: because you've been saying this for over a decade. You've
- 16:02Speaker 2: written stories like on the Sports Illustrated back in the day.
- 16:04Speaker 2: You talked about this on the Dan Patrick show against
- 16:06Speaker 2: the great. You always draft the next quarterback because it's
- 16:09Speaker 2: a luxury item. If it doesn't work out, you still
- 16:12Speaker 2: had that rookie contract that sets up the rest of
- 16:14Speaker 2: your team. So you've been beating this drum for years
- 16:15Speaker 2: that you must have a high-end rookie quarterback. And if
- 16:18Speaker 2: you don't get them, get another one.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it also puts pressure. A team like
- 16:22Speaker 1: your team, the Bears, Caleb Williams is still in his
- 16:24Speaker 1: rookie deal.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Not for long.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I know, but this year they have a lot of
- 16:28Speaker 1: talent around them. I think that they need to make
- 16:30Speaker 1: some moves. So the clock is ticking.
- 16:32Speaker 2: All right, speaking of quarterbacks, let's get down to college football,
- 16:35Speaker 2: and I love this. I saw that Tommy Carr, the
- 16:37Speaker 2: son of legendary Lloyd Carr, the former Michigan coach.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Is the second-string quarterback now at Michigan. Not a surprise.
- 16:42Speaker 2: He's a legacy. His grandfather coached there. What is a
- 16:46Speaker 2: surprise is that his older brother, C.J. Carr, did not
- 16:48Speaker 2: go to Michigan. Now, I know we're a couple years
- 16:50Speaker 2: into this, but it still amazes me.
- 16:51Speaker 1: C.J.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Carr is now a Heisman candidate for Notre Dame. They
- 16:54Speaker 2: are in play.
- 16:55Speaker 1: There he is.
- 16:55Speaker 2: There's little Tommy Carr getting some run this year for Michigan.
- 16:59Speaker 1: C.J.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Carr is looking at a Heisman. He's looking at the playoffs.
- 17:03Speaker 2: And somehow Michigan let him escape. I don't know how
- 17:05Speaker 2: this happened. I read back some stories that Tommy Reese,
- 17:08Speaker 2: the recruiter, and Marcus Freeman just... Never let up. They
- 17:11Speaker 2: didn't take no for an answer. They didn't let that
- 17:13Speaker 2: legacy thing stop them from recruiting the heck out of C.J.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Carr. And it worked.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I don't know if Michigan took him for granted or
- 17:20Speaker 2: expected him to be there because of the legacy, but
- 17:22Speaker 2: it's a big win. Now, luckily for Michigan, Michigan and
- 17:25Speaker 2: Notre Dame aren't playing right now. That series is on hold, which,
- 17:27Speaker 2: by the way, stinks for college football. But if somehow C.J.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Carr wins a Heisman or goes to the national title
- 17:33Speaker 2: game or both, Michigan fans will be extra, extra sold.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. It's funny. I remember when CJ Carr
- 17:39Speaker 1: got to Notre Dame, I'm like, that's funny. He has
- 17:41Speaker 1: the same last name as Lloyd Carr from Michigan. I
- 17:43Speaker 1: wonder why he's at Notre Dame.
- 17:44Speaker 2: You actually texted me and said that he can't be
- 17:46Speaker 2: related to Lloyd Carr, right?
- 17:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Because if you have the same last name
- 17:49Speaker 1: as an iconic coach, I think you're required federally to
- 17:52Speaker 1: go to that school. CJ was being the rebel.
- 17:54Speaker 2: It's like me drinking some other beer.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to obviously drink Pabst. Although I'm not
- 18:00Speaker 1: sure you do drink Pabst.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Oh, not yet today.
- 18:03Speaker 1: All right, I'm going to shift gears for my warm take.
- 18:05Speaker 1: The other day Djokovic lost his first round match in
- 18:09Speaker 1: the U.S. Open. Now he's 38 years old and it
- 18:11Speaker 1: dawned on me he is not going to win another major.
- 18:14Speaker 1: He might not even reach the semifinals of another major.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Now I have high expectations. I'm a tennis fan. I
- 18:20Speaker 1: wanted to see him kind of go out on top.
- 18:22Speaker 1: It was a reminder that hardly anyone goes out on top.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Whether it's Joker, whether it's Tiger Woods, the end is
- 18:30Speaker 1: always kind of ugly. And that makes me think about
- 18:33Speaker 1: a couple guys playing this year. Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh.
- 18:36Speaker 1: He might be okay. They might make the playoffs. The
- 18:40Speaker 1: odds are it's not going to look great, Paul. And
- 18:42Speaker 1: it also reminds me of another guy. I'm a 76ers fan.
- 18:45Speaker 1: LeBron James. I mean, listen, there's a lot of talent
- 18:49Speaker 1: in Philly, and he can help all the young players.
- 18:51Speaker 1: But to think that he's going to be the real
- 18:53Speaker 1: LeBron James, it's kind of like the Joker. It's a
- 18:55Speaker 1: bit of fantasy. And once again, we're reminded, old stars
- 18:59Speaker 1: don't go out on top. You know, there's one John Elway. 95%
- 19:03Speaker 1: of the time, they go out struggling. And it's a
- 19:05Speaker 1: sad reality, but it might be the truth.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a couple guys I'd like to mention here.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I think LeBron will go out pretty well because the
- 19:10Speaker 2: team he built around him takes less pressure off him.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I would say he's in a better position than I
- 19:14Speaker 2: expected him to be for the next team. I would
- 19:16Speaker 2: say that Tom Brady is a guy that jumps out
- 19:18Speaker 2: to me. When he won that Super Bowl in Tampa,
- 19:20Speaker 2: he should have ran to retire. And he did for
- 19:22Speaker 2: five weeks.
- 19:23Speaker 1: But he still had the bad last year, though.
- 19:25Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 19:25Speaker 1: You've got to get out of your system.
- 19:26Speaker 2: That bad last year. Brady will remember that forever. I
- 19:30Speaker 2: wish Brady got that Super Bowl. Peyton Manning. He limped
- 19:33Speaker 2: to the finish and ran for retirement when he got
- 19:35Speaker 2: that Super Bowl.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Well, it's funny because he went out with a ring.
- 19:37Speaker 1: But do we really remember it as going out on top?
- 19:40Speaker 2: It wasn't pretty, but it was a ring. Brady should
- 19:42Speaker 2: have got that ring and just wrapped it up.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see. I think that the end's always bad.
- 19:48Speaker 1: After watching Djokovic, believe it or not, I'm going to
- 19:51Speaker 1: lower my expectations on the Steelers. Does that make any sense,
- 19:53Speaker 1: watching a tennis match and affecting your football bets?
- 19:56Speaker 2: That's what we do on Not So Fast. We work
- 19:57Speaker 2: in Djokovic to Aaron Rodgers in one step. We don't
- 20:00Speaker 2: have to do Kevin Bacon game. All right, let's do
- 20:01Speaker 2: a little NFL preview time here. Now, usually on these shows,
- 20:05Speaker 2: not on Not So Fast, They always start on these
- 20:07Speaker 2: shows with the AFC East first. And it's like that
- 20:10Speaker 2: East Coast bias thing. We are going to go way
- 20:13Speaker 2: out West.
- 20:13Speaker 1: That's not East Coast bias. That's the way the standings
- 20:15Speaker 1: are ordered, Paul. We argue about this all the time.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but are you an alphabetist? Are you saying we
- 20:19Speaker 2: got to go alphabetical on the show? Because that's even
- 20:21Speaker 2: more bothersome.
- 20:22Speaker 1: When people break down the NFL, you start with either
- 20:24Speaker 1: NFC East or AFC East. You don't start in another division.
- 20:27Speaker 2: That's why this show is special. We go Mountain Time Zone,
- 20:30Speaker 2: Pacific Time Zone. We embrace the men of the people.
- 20:32Speaker 2: All right, let's do a little NFC West. We're talking
- 20:34Speaker 2: about that a lot. The Seahawks lose Clint Kubiak in
- 20:36Speaker 2: the offense quarter. They lose running back Kenneth Walker, who
- 20:40Speaker 2: I actually like that move. Instead of spending a lot
- 20:42Speaker 2: on the running back position, they move on and get
- 20:45Speaker 2: Jadarian Price. Seahawks not getting a lot of coverage. Any
- 20:48Speaker 2: chance for a drop-off?
- 20:49Speaker 1: Oh, of course there's a chance for a drop-off. I mean,
- 20:51Speaker 1: the rule is you don't really repeat in the NFL. But, man,
- 20:55Speaker 1: I think people are underestimating them big time. Plus 210
- 20:57Speaker 1: to win the NFC West. They're the defending champion. And
- 21:00Speaker 1: there aren't any real losses. They almost have the whole
- 21:02Speaker 1: defense back. They lost a guy named Reek Wolin, who
- 21:05Speaker 1: actually ended up costing them with dumb penalties. So I
- 21:08Speaker 1: think Seattle is being underestimated right now.
- 21:11Speaker 2: All right, we're going to get to the Rams in
- 21:12Speaker 2: a second. But what's interesting about the Seahawks and the Rams,
- 21:14Speaker 2: they play in Week 16 and Week 18. They jam
- 21:17Speaker 2: those games together. The division will be decided those days,
- 21:21Speaker 2: and also probably home field advantage for the entire NFC playoffs.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember last year there was that crazy night
- 21:26Speaker 1: game with the two-point conversion. I think Charbonnet picked up
- 21:29Speaker 1: the ball, and the Seahawks winning that game gave them
- 21:31Speaker 1: home field, which I think was critical in the playoffs.
- 21:34Speaker 1: So that week 16 and week 18 could decide the
- 21:37Speaker 1: whole NFC.
- 21:38Speaker 2: We talked a little bit about this yesterday. If you
- 21:40Speaker 2: look at the Rams, everyone is just bowing at the Rams' altar.
- 21:44Speaker 2: The chance for them to have an issue, besides Matt
- 21:47Speaker 2: Stafford's health, the chance for them to have an.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Issue, a hiccup. Yeah, they're thin. They're thin and they're old,
- 21:51Speaker 1: and it's a long NFL season.
- 21:53Speaker 2: That's like us, thin and old.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Yeah, what happened to Matthew Stafford's back injury, Paul?
- 21:57Speaker 2: It's all better.
- 22:00Speaker 1: We know backs. And he had a shoulder a couple
- 22:02Speaker 1: years ago. Yeah, I know. I think there's a lot
- 22:04Speaker 1: on the line here. We still got suspensions. I think
- 22:08Speaker 1: the plus 500 number to win the Super Bowl is ridiculous.
- 22:10Speaker 1: First of all, the team that's plus 500, 5-1 to
- 22:13Speaker 1: win the whole thing never wins. So I'm actually fading
- 22:16Speaker 1: the Rams despite logic because that D-line is incredible. I mean,
- 22:20Speaker 1: no one's arguing against Myles Garrett. And Aaron Donald is
- 22:23Speaker 1: just arguing that anybody can be that strong a favorite
- 22:25Speaker 1: in the NFL.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Two more teams, the 49ers. Can you picture the 49ers
- 22:28Speaker 2: with six wins or 11 wins? Because I can picture both.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I can picture them with 11 wins. Even if they
- 22:34Speaker 1: have another rash of injuries, Kyle Shanahan is such a
- 22:37Speaker 1: good coach. And I think he runs the offense so well.
- 22:40Speaker 1: It kind of doesn't matter who's there. I mean, the
- 22:42Speaker 1: fact that they won so many games without Nick Bosa
- 22:45Speaker 1: last year was a good sign to me. I think
- 22:47Speaker 1: the Seahawks, I'm sorry, the Niners are going to be
- 22:49Speaker 1: at least a wildcard team, but they're not dangerous, threatening
- 22:52Speaker 1: like the Seahawks and the Rams.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Let's finish with the Cardinals on brand. Now, is that
- 22:56Speaker 2: plus 1 million to win the title? It looks like 10,000,
- 22:58Speaker 2: a million, whatever. Add some zeros there if you want.
- 23:01Speaker 2: The Cardinals, I like that they're kind of in tank
- 23:04Speaker 2: mode because there's a lot of quarterbacks for next year.
- 23:06Speaker 2: But they didn't go full tank mode. They drafted Jeremiah Love,
- 23:11Speaker 2: the great running back out of Notre Dame, and they're
- 23:12Speaker 2: spending $ 50 million on him. That bothers me. If you're
- 23:15Speaker 2: going to tank, tank. Don't draft a guy who's ready
- 23:17Speaker 2: to play now, ready to dominate now, on a team
- 23:19Speaker 2: that's not ready to host him.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you know when I knew the Cardinals didn't know
- 23:23Speaker 1: what they were doing? Week one of preseason. They let
- 23:25Speaker 1: Love carry the ball 13 times. What are you doing?
- 23:29Speaker 1: It's week one of the preseason. Of course he gets hurt.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I would put him in bubble wrap. I'd play him maybe. Yeah,
- 23:34Speaker 1: because you're waiting for it. Next year's quarterback is in
- 23:37Speaker 1: the college ranks right now. Do not overuse Jeremiah Love.
- 23:39Speaker 2: If you're tanking, don't take a running back. That's what
- 23:41Speaker 2: Winston Churchill said that year.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Was it Churchill?
- 23:44Speaker 2: I think it was. All right, coming up next, our
- 23:46Speaker 2: buddy Dan Katz, Big Cat from Barstool Sports. He's an
- 23:48Speaker 2: author now, and he hangs out with us. Look at
- 23:50Speaker 2: us guys there back in the day. Dan Katz, Barstool Sports,
- 23:54Speaker 2: Big Cat. Next on Not So Fast.
- 23:58Speaker 1: That was fun.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Plus 10 million?
- 24:00Speaker 1: Big Katz. I'm so excited for this.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I like that sport coat he had. That's on brand.
- 24:07Speaker 2: He's a sport coat guy.
- 24:13Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Perloff.
- 24:16Speaker 1: He's Pabst. Now, Paul, when we first started ideating on
- 24:19Speaker 1: the show, who was the first guest that we wanted?
- 24:21Speaker 2: Oh, PFT commenter.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Yeah, we totally wanted PFT. He was unavailable, so then
- 24:27Speaker 1: we went to Hank Lockwood from the Part of My
- 24:29Speaker 1: Take podcast.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Hard no.
- 24:30Speaker 1: He was playing golf. He couldn't do it. So, fortunately,
- 24:33Speaker 1: our friend Dan Katz, Big Cat, was available. He is,
- 24:37Speaker 1: of course, the host of Part of My Take and
- 24:39Speaker 1: the best-selling author of Part of My Book. Dan, this
- 24:45Speaker 1: book is incredible. Congratulations.
- 24:48Speaker 5: So thank you, boys. Great to see you both. Love
- 24:51Speaker 5: both of you. So happy you guys are back together.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Before we started, Pearl, you said that you read the book.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Then you just said the book is incredible. Now I
- 25:00Speaker 5: know you didn't read the book.
- 25:02Speaker 1: No, no, no. No, this strategically placed typos, unbelievable. I
- 25:07Speaker 1: think I caught four of them. You said there were seven,
- 25:09Speaker 1: I believe.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Oh, there's more than that.
- 25:11Speaker 5: I mean, I opened up a parentheses on page nine,
- 25:16Speaker 5: never closed it.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Never, ever closed it.
- 25:18Speaker 5: So the last 300 pages of the book are just
- 25:22Speaker 5: a clarification on the first eight pages.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Of the book.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Yeah, football guys don't use grammar, Dan.
- 25:28Speaker 4: No, no, and we did.
- 25:29Speaker 5: We actually, in true football guy fashion, we broke it
- 25:32Speaker 5: up in four quarters so that our fans could understand
- 25:35Speaker 5: what was going on, and that's how the book is
- 25:38Speaker 5: broken up. And it wasn't easy to write, I'll say that, because–
- 25:44Speaker 5: I'm just out of my experience of blogging and writing,
- 25:48Speaker 5: but I'm happy we did it, and I think people
- 25:50Speaker 5: enjoy it, and it's true to form in the fact
- 25:52Speaker 5: that If we had put out a book that was
- 25:55Speaker 5: very well written and perfect prose.
- 25:58Speaker 4: I think people would be like, who did this?
- 26:00Speaker 5: Instead, it's a lot of grammatical errors and nonsensical repetition
- 26:06Speaker 5: of words. I think people understand that we actually did
- 26:08Speaker 5: write this.
- 26:09Speaker 1: You know, Big Cat, one part I loved was the
- 26:11Speaker 1: section on Barstool Van Talk and Dan Patrick. Now, Dan,
- 26:15Speaker 1: people might not know, was your last interview on Barstool
- 26:18Speaker 1: Van Talk.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Second and last.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Second and last. And I read you were going to
- 26:21Speaker 1: light him on fire for the interview. Yes.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Yes, so we had an actual conversation with our showrunner,
- 26:28Speaker 5: this guy named Ziggs, who was a great guy, and
- 26:30Speaker 5: he tried.
- 26:30Speaker 4: His absolute best.
- 26:32Speaker 5: But we were like, hey, we're going to do a
- 26:34Speaker 5: playoff of En Fuego from Dan Patrick's SportsCenter days, and
- 26:39Speaker 5: let's just light him on fire.
- 26:42Speaker 4: We'll have a fire department there.
- 26:44Speaker 5: It will just be a small fire, and we'll just
- 26:47Speaker 5: do it really quickly, and no one will get hurt.
- 26:50Speaker 5: And I remember he, he actually like, you know, took
- 26:53Speaker 5: the idea and brought it to everyone and he came
- 26:56Speaker 5: back to us and he so earnestly and like disappointed
- 26:59Speaker 5: in himself was like, Hey fellas, listen, I talked to everyone.
- 27:04Speaker 4: We're not going to be able to light Dan Patrick
- 27:05Speaker 4: on fire. And we're just like, what?
- 27:07Speaker 1: Come on.
- 27:08Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 27:09Speaker 2: That's a hit. And the tough part was to protect
- 27:12Speaker 2: Dan's hair as part of our job, my job as
- 27:14Speaker 2: the producer. I would have had to jump on him
- 27:16Speaker 2: and smother it out.
- 27:17Speaker 5: Yeah, and the amount of hairspray he uses, that thing
- 27:20Speaker 5: would have blown up so fast.
- 27:22Speaker 4: So, yeah. Yeah, it's good.
- 27:25Speaker 5: But that's how long we've known each other and being
- 27:27Speaker 5: able to go back into the history of Pardon My Take.
- 27:30Speaker 4: It was a fun exercise to remember some of these things.
- 27:33Speaker 2: You know, I want to stay with the book for
- 27:34Speaker 2: a second. When you go back to Pardon My Take,
- 27:36Speaker 2: I always go back to maybe a couple months in,
- 27:38Speaker 2: you guys had Mark Schlereth on and you guys forced
- 27:41Speaker 2: yourself to urinate on yourselves.
- 27:44Speaker 1: As a bit.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I really believe that that is the turning point where
- 27:47Speaker 2: if you hadn't heard of that show yet, which you started,
- 27:50Speaker 2: you guys were cooking, you couldn't miss that clip.
- 27:53Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that was definitely, there was a few in
- 27:55Speaker 5: that first year, six months to a year, that were
- 27:59Speaker 5: really like seminal moments. We had ESPN sue us immediately,
- 28:03Speaker 5: which was the greatest thing that could have ever happened
- 28:05Speaker 5: to us, because let's be honest, we did completely rip
- 28:09Speaker 5: off their logo, but PFT immediately sent them a cease
- 28:12Speaker 5: and desist back to cease and desist, cease and desisting us.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:16Speaker 5: We had Joe Buck on. We had Scott Van Pelt.
- 28:18Speaker 5: Kyle Wilcher came on and said that Adam Morrison had
- 28:20Speaker 5: an apocalypse bunker, which was huge for us. And then
- 28:24Speaker 5: the Mark Schlereth interview, urinating our pants. I agree with you.
- 28:28Speaker 5: I think that was a moment where everyone was like,
- 28:29Speaker 5: what are these guys doing? And it's really like going
- 28:32Speaker 5: back and through it all, it's really time and place.
- 28:36Speaker 4: We got very, very lucky.
- 28:37Speaker 5: And I think that anyone who writes a book and
- 28:40Speaker 5: tries to tell you that they're incredible and it's their
- 28:43Speaker 5: hard work– No, no, we had a lot of luck involved.
- 28:45Speaker 5: And there's these moments along the road that you're like, yeah,
- 28:48Speaker 5: that was really lucky.
- 28:49Speaker 4: That was really lucky.
- 28:50Speaker 5: So we're very grateful and understand how humble we should
- 28:54Speaker 5: be in the success we've had.
- 28:55Speaker 1: All right, Big Cat, I want to jump right into
- 28:57Speaker 1: this season. I noticed a trend on the podcast recently,
- 29:00Speaker 1: and you know I listen. Dallas Cowboys, you seem to
- 29:03Speaker 1: love them.
- 29:05Speaker 4: I'm buying. I don't know. I don't know what happened
- 29:07Speaker 4: to me, Pearl.
- 29:08Speaker 5: It's actually bothered me that the fact that I have
- 29:11Speaker 5: given actual thought to the Texans and Cowboys playing in.
- 29:14Speaker 4: The Super Bowl.
- 29:16Speaker 5: Look, their team, their offense was electric when healthy last year.
- 29:21Speaker 4: And if their.
- 29:22Speaker 5: Defense, they don't have to be, I always look in the,
- 29:26Speaker 5: before the season, I've looked for the teams that like,
- 29:29Speaker 5: they don't have to make this huge jump. They just
- 29:31Speaker 5: have to get a little bit better in some piece.
- 29:33Speaker 5: And they like, if the Cowboys are a top, let's
- 29:36Speaker 5: call it 15 defense, top 12 defense, that's going to be.
- 29:38Speaker 4: A really good team. The Texans, if C.J.
- 29:42Speaker 5: Stroud plays B-level football, he doesn't have to be A +.
- 29:46Speaker 5: He doesn't have to be Josh Allen. He doesn't have
- 29:48Speaker 5: to be Lamar Jackson or Patrick Rose. He has to
- 29:50Speaker 5: be like the... 12th or 15th best quarterback, and that
- 29:55Speaker 5: defense can carry them. So I'm looking for those type
- 29:57Speaker 5: of teams.
- 29:58Speaker 2: But also, you root for counter-narratives. I think the Cowboys
- 30:00Speaker 2: winning a Super Bowl would actually turn the media on
- 30:02Speaker 2: its head because they wouldn't know how to cover the
- 30:04Speaker 2: Cowboys going forward without the they-haven't-won-in-three-decades type thing.
- 30:09Speaker 1: True.
- 30:09Speaker 5: That would confuse a lot of people. Yeah, I'm not
- 30:12Speaker 5: rooting for it. I'm not rooting for the Cowboys. I'm
- 30:14Speaker 5: just looking at teams and I'm like, hey, who am
- 30:16Speaker 5: I high on? I also should say that if you
- 30:18Speaker 5: had me write down everyone's record right now and I
- 30:21Speaker 5: didn't know how, I'm not a math guy. I think
- 30:24Speaker 5: I'd have like 75% of the league going 11-7.
- 30:28Speaker 4: And the math wouldn't work out. Right, so it doesn't
- 30:31Speaker 4: work out. I'm high on all these teams.
- 30:33Speaker 5: I did the exercise earlier yesterday, and I listed off
- 30:38Speaker 5: all these teams, and I think I had... 10 playoff
- 30:40Speaker 5: teams in the NFC. So I understand that none of
- 30:43Speaker 5: this makes sense and none of this works out.
- 30:45Speaker 1: All right.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Staying in the NFC, you watched the Bears all last year.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I came back to town. We watched the Bears that
- 30:50Speaker 2: one night. And the Bears last season was the most
- 30:53Speaker 2: entertaining football season that didn't result in a Super Bowl
- 30:56Speaker 2: in sports history. Is it sustainable, the last second stuff,
- 31:00Speaker 2: the defense takeaways? It feels lightly sustainable.
- 31:04Speaker 5: I think the offense is going to be better and
- 31:07Speaker 5: more sustainable this year because I have full trust in
- 31:09Speaker 5: Ben Johnson and Cale Williams.
- 31:11Speaker 4: I unfortunately think the defense might be worse somehow, which
- 31:13Speaker 4: is crazy to say.
- 31:14Speaker 5: And that's going to be the real problem for the
- 31:17Speaker 5: Bears this year. If you look at what they did
- 31:20Speaker 5: in the offseason, the defensive line did not get markedly
- 31:23Speaker 5: better in the draft or the free agency. Now you
- 31:26Speaker 5: can say they did take a couple guys like Jordan Vandenberg,
- 31:30Speaker 5: who if he pops as a rookie, that could be
- 31:32Speaker 5: a big addition on the defensive line. They added someone
- 31:36Speaker 5: in the secondary, Kobe Bryant, who got hurt, and it stinks.
- 31:40Speaker 5: So I don't know where this defense is getting better,
- 31:43Speaker 5: and they're going to be in a lot of shootouts.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I think the offense is going to be great.
- 31:47Speaker 5: I think we're going to have kind of a similar
- 31:48Speaker 5: season where we're going to be last-second games and comebacks
- 31:52Speaker 5: and trying to scratch and claw our way to 10-11 wins.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Dan, I was working on an against the grain take.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Tyson Badgen is the best quarterback in Chicago. How would
- 32:01Speaker 1: that work? Anybody into that?
- 32:03Speaker 5: Oh, no, there was a little bit of that. Okay,
- 32:05Speaker 5: so last year before the season, there was a brief. Obviously,
- 32:09Speaker 5: that happens, especially in a city like Chicago, where it's
- 32:13Speaker 5: like the backup quarterback gets a lot of love. I
- 32:16Speaker 5: still text all the time with Frank Kaminsky where he
- 32:19Speaker 5: says that Josh McCown could have taken us to a
- 32:21Speaker 5: Super Bowl.
- 32:22Speaker 4: So there's always that.
- 32:24Speaker 5: I think Tyson Pagin is a good– I think he–
- 32:26Speaker 5: what I would say about him is he might be
- 32:28Speaker 5: one of the best backups in the NFL. And having
- 32:32Speaker 5: a guy like that on your roster, like he probably
- 32:35Speaker 5: could have gone somewhere else. He signed a two-year deal.
- 32:37Speaker 5: He's with Ben Johnson. I think having a guy that
- 32:40Speaker 5: if Caleb, God forbid, gets hurt, you have someone that
- 32:44Speaker 5: could maybe run the offense is a really good bonus
- 32:47Speaker 5: that a lot of teams don't have.
- 32:48Speaker 2: There is no better job in sports than being a good,
- 32:51Speaker 2: respected backup quarterback who never plays. You get nice money.
- 32:54Speaker 2: You don't have to shower. Remember like Billy Volek? He
- 32:57Speaker 2: was a pure backup. I think Chase Daniel had nine
- 33:00Speaker 2: touchdowns in his career.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Yeah, Jim Sorge.
- 33:02Speaker 5: Jim Sorge, Badger, who was the backup for Peyton Manning
- 33:05Speaker 5: for like a decade.
- 33:06Speaker 4: He never had to play.
- 33:07Speaker 2: All right, I want to go back to the book
- 33:08Speaker 2: for a second. When you're researching the book and looking
- 33:11Speaker 2: back at part of my take, is there a guest
- 33:13Speaker 2: where you said to yourself, man, I would like a do-over,
- 33:16Speaker 2: a second shot at that guy, that person?
- 33:18Speaker 4: I mean, there's a few.
- 33:21Speaker 5: There's a couple interviews that have not gone well. Chris Paul,
- 33:25Speaker 5: we never aired it. Dak Prescott, he didn't like us,
- 33:29Speaker 5: and he actually stayed on the line with his publicist.
- 33:33Speaker 5: like hot Mike situation was like, those guys were weird.
- 33:35Speaker 5: And we're like, Oh, Dak, we're still here. We can
- 33:37Speaker 5: hear you. Um, so it's like Dan Marino was a
- 33:41Speaker 5: tough one. There's definitely some ones that, that we'd like.
- 33:44Speaker 4: To have back.
- 33:44Speaker 5: But I think that when we look back at it, uh,
- 33:48Speaker 5: doing this for 10 years, doing three episodes a week
- 33:52Speaker 5: for 10 years, uh, Our hit rate is really high still.
- 33:55Speaker 5: It's 99.5%. So yeah, there's a couple that we could
- 33:58Speaker 5: all remember, but really at the end of the day,
- 34:00Speaker 5: we've done a pretty good job.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Who do you want to interview? I think Dajon Love,
- 34:05Speaker 1: you said, is at the top of your list.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Oh my God. I need him. I need him.
- 34:11Speaker 1: And you're going to interview him as if he's a
- 34:12Speaker 1: real NFL player, is that correct? Yes.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Oh, absolutely. Have to.
- 34:16Speaker 5: I think, you know, obviously LeBron James would be incredible.
- 34:20Speaker 5: I don't think he'll ever come on. I think Kevin
- 34:22Speaker 5: Durant would be awesome. I don't think he'll ever come on.
- 34:25Speaker 5: So there's some guys like that, but we've gotten a
- 34:27Speaker 5: lot of these interviews, these white whale interviews done. So yeah,
- 34:31Speaker 5: I'll say Dajon Love. We would love to have Dajon
- 34:33Speaker 5: Love on.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Remember when Kevin Durant actually tweeted about you and me
- 34:38Speaker 1: playing basketball?
- 34:39Speaker 4: Yes.
- 34:40Speaker 1: And he said how bad we were.
- 34:41Speaker 4: He said, get this trash off my court.
- 34:44Speaker 5: He used to troll me in my own DMs all
- 34:46Speaker 5: the time on our Saturday morning run that Pearl and
- 34:49Speaker 5: I would have in Manhattan.
- 34:50Speaker 2: You guys were doing yeoman's work down at those courts.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Katie genuinely dislikes you, it seemed like. Or is
- 34:56Speaker 1: that just an act by him?
- 34:57Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 34:58Speaker 5: I think there was a moment where he disliked me,
- 35:00Speaker 5: and that was totally justified because I definitely said some
- 35:03Speaker 5: things that I wouldn't expect him to. And then I
- 35:07Speaker 5: think slowly he was like, these guys are kind of funny,
- 35:10Speaker 5: and they're just busting each other's chops, which is what
- 35:15Speaker 5: Katie loves to do.
- 35:16Speaker 4: He's online all the time. I think he likes that
- 35:18Speaker 4: type of discourse.
- 35:19Speaker 2: All right, we want to get you out of here,
- 35:20Speaker 2: but a couple more things. One of my favorite moments
- 35:22Speaker 2: in your career and Barstool's career, I think it was
- 35:24Speaker 2: you and PFT, We were all at the Super Bowl
- 35:26Speaker 2: in San Francisco, you, me, Perloff, we were chatting, and
- 35:29Speaker 2: you were walking over to interview Terrell Owens, and I
- 35:32Speaker 2: think the sponsor was Butterfinger.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Yes.
- 35:34Speaker 2: And you walked over, and I kind of was in
- 35:36Speaker 2: the background. I was like, let's see how this goes.
- 35:38Speaker 2: And you guys asked him 15 questions about Butterfinger and
- 35:41Speaker 2: nothing about football. And I said to Pearl, I go,
- 35:45Speaker 2: I admire that. I admire what you did.
- 35:47Speaker 5: Yeah, that was our guy, Caleb Presley. So that was, yeah,
- 35:50Speaker 5: it was a situation where it was actually pre-PMT, but
- 35:55Speaker 5: it was a situation where Butterfinger asked us to do
- 35:57Speaker 5: an interview. They I'm talking to them. They're like, we
- 36:00Speaker 5: have them for 10 minutes. I was like, this is ridiculous.
- 36:02Speaker 5: You guys know this. Like when you try to do
- 36:04Speaker 5: a sponsored interview for 10 minutes of the Super Bowl,
- 36:07Speaker 5: there's just a pretty good chance that it's not going
- 36:09Speaker 5: to go well. So I told Caleb, I was like,
- 36:12Speaker 5: let's just do this. Let's just only ask about Butterfingers.
- 36:14Speaker 5: Like never anything. Like, I think he was asking him
- 36:17Speaker 5: questions like, what's your favorite Butterfingers? So, you know, just
- 36:21Speaker 5: just kind of making a mockery of the whole thing.
- 36:23Speaker 5: And it is that is very similar to what part
- 36:26Speaker 5: of my take has been where you have the sports
- 36:28Speaker 5: media world. People take themselves way too seriously. None of
- 36:32Speaker 5: this should be taken seriously. We're all just watching sports
- 36:36Speaker 5: and messing around at the end of the day. And
- 36:39Speaker 5: that's where we've excelled versus a lot of the competition.
- 36:42Speaker 4: We never take ourselves too seriously.
- 36:44Speaker 2: So one of the things we do here in Not
- 36:45Speaker 2: So Fast, a tradition almost two days in the making,
- 36:47Speaker 2: is we have a thing called Such Thing is a
- 36:49Speaker 2: Dumb Question. And we're not going to hesitate. Did you ever,
- 36:53Speaker 2: as a football guy, get to September... And think to yourself,
- 36:57Speaker 2: what did I do with my free time in the
- 36:59Speaker 2: spring and summer? Because now I have none because I'm
- 37:01Speaker 2: watching so much football.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 5: I actually get, like, I don't want to say anxiety, but, like,
- 37:08Speaker 5: this time of year I do have a little bit
- 37:10Speaker 5: of trepidation being like, man.
- 37:12Speaker 4: There's a lot of work coming up in the next
- 37:15Speaker 4: few months. Now, I shouldn't be complaining. I'm not complaining
- 37:18Speaker 4: because it is the best job in the world.
- 37:20Speaker 5: But, yeah, I actually once sat at a dinner– I
- 37:24Speaker 5: was sitting next to the composer of the, of a succession,
- 37:28Speaker 5: the music, uh, like famous guy and very nice guy.
- 37:32Speaker 5: And I asked him, I was like, do you watch
- 37:34Speaker 5: any sports? He's like, not a single sport. And I
- 37:37Speaker 5: was like, what do you do on Sundays? He's like,
- 37:40Speaker 5: I do grocery shopping. I go to the park. I
- 37:42Speaker 5: do my laundry. I'm like, oh my God, that's like,
- 37:45Speaker 5: what a world to live in. You have an extra
- 37:47Speaker 5: day of your life that you can get things done.
- 37:50Speaker 1: All right, we'll let you go, Big Cat. Real quick,
- 37:52Speaker 1: any advice for doing a two-person show? I don't know
- 37:54Speaker 1: who's the Big Cat and who's the PFT of the
- 37:57Speaker 1: two of us, but it seems like you guys have
- 37:59Speaker 1: kind of figured it out.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say the real advice is get a
- 38:03Speaker 5: third guy that you can both go after, so that
- 38:05Speaker 5: way you don't fight each other. That's where Hank comes
- 38:07Speaker 5: into play. So yeah, get that third guy and then
- 38:10Speaker 5: attack that third guy so you guys never fight.
- 38:12Speaker 1: I love it. Thank you so much for your time.
- 38:14Speaker 1: I really love the book.
- 38:15Speaker 2: See you soon, bud.
- 38:16Speaker 1: If you like the podcast, you'll love the book. Dan,
- 38:17Speaker 1: talk soon.
- 38:18Speaker 4: Thank you, guys. Appreciate it.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Wow. I love Big Cat. We've known him for a
- 38:22Speaker 1: long time, Paul. You knew him first through the Chicago Connection. Yep.
- 38:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Good guy.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Wisconsin guy. Chicago guy.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Big eater.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Good guy to eat with because he will order multiple
- 38:33Speaker 2: apps and let it play out.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Yeah. We love Big Cat. And again, the book is
- 38:37Speaker 1: really fun. All right. Coming up next, Michigan coach Kyle
- 38:40Speaker 1: Whittingham talks about his comments on Ohio State. I don't
- 38:44Speaker 1: know he convinced me that he really hates them. We'll
- 38:46Speaker 1: do that next. Not so fast. I don't know if
- 38:50Speaker 1: it was enough, Paul. Enough? Yeah, from Kyle Whittingham.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Oh, I thought you were talking about wings.
- 38:54Speaker 1: We'll see. Wow, there's never enough wings.
- 39:01Speaker 4: People want to hear you say you hate Ohio State, right?
- 39:07Speaker 6: I guess that's what they want.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 39:08Speaker 6: I want to beat them as bad as anybody, probably worse.
- 39:14Speaker 6: How about this? I guess we could hate them all
- 39:16Speaker 6: one day a year.
- 39:17Speaker 4: How about that?
- 39:18Speaker 6: To me, it's got to happen organically and you, you know,
- 39:20Speaker 6: it's tough to manufacture that. And so, uh, but just
- 39:23Speaker 6: the competitive nature of the game. I mean, it's the
- 39:26Speaker 6: rivalry game the premier rivalry game in the country. And,
- 39:32Speaker 6: you know, everybody knows that. I'm fully aware of that.
- 39:35Speaker 6: And by no means am I trying to downplay the game.
- 39:38Speaker 6: And the game is huge. I mean, it's a huge
- 39:39Speaker 6: game year in and year out.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff here, NBC
- 39:44Speaker 2: Sports Now. Kyle Whittingham. Former Utah coach, now the Michigan coach.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Still getting asked questions about the whole I don't hate
- 39:50Speaker 2: Ryan Day thing.
- 39:51Speaker 1: I can't believe he's sticking to this, i.e. treating it
- 39:54Speaker 1: like any other game. What is he doing, Paul?
- 39:56Speaker 2: Okay, here's my theory. This guy's been around a long time.
- 39:59Speaker 2: He did not grow up in the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry.
- 40:01Speaker 2: He's aware of it, but he's at the age right now,
- 40:04Speaker 2: despite him looking like a guy in a Cialis ad
- 40:06Speaker 2: who's jacked and has his own plane. He's like, I'm
- 40:09Speaker 2: not going to fake it for you guys. I'm at
- 40:11Speaker 2: the age now where I'm not going to fake it.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Of course I want to beat them, but I'm not
- 40:14Speaker 2: going to do the I will not drive through that
- 40:15Speaker 2: state thing.
- 40:16Speaker 1: But is he setting up a must-win situation? I mean,
- 40:18Speaker 1: I know Michigan and Ohio State is always a must-win,
- 40:21Speaker 1: but the fact that he's been downplaying this game, they
- 40:23Speaker 1: better show up for that game, Paul.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Yeah, all you got to do is win, and no
- 40:26Speaker 2: one will talk about this topic again, but it really
- 40:28Speaker 2: is kind of a fun back and forth.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Can we give a shout-out to his glasses, too? Oh, strong, glassy.
- 40:33Speaker 2: He's like one of those old guys you would not
- 40:34Speaker 2: want to get in a fight with.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. He's such a man. He makes me
- 40:37Speaker 1: feel like less of a man, which is not that
- 40:39Speaker 1: hard to do. But he's really cool. Fun interview with DP.
- 40:42Speaker 2: All right, let's get to our guy. Luke Keekly was
- 40:44Speaker 2: also on the Dan Patrick. Luke Keekly, he's a former linebacker,
- 40:48Speaker 2: Hall of Famer, Luke Keekly. And Dan asked him a
- 40:50Speaker 2: little bit about being recruited out of high school in Ohio.
- 40:52Speaker 2: He went to BC, but who else recruited him? But
- 40:55Speaker 2: growing up, you know, in Cincinnati, Ohio State recruit you?
- 41:00Speaker 4: Not really. You know, I was, when I was being recruited,
- 41:02Speaker 4: I was, I was small, I was skinny. I wasn't
- 41:06Speaker 4: very big.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Um, and quite frankly, if I was recruiting people out
- 41:11Speaker 1: of Cincinnati, I probably wouldn't have recruited me if I.
- 41:13Speaker 4: Was Ohio state either.
- 41:14Speaker 5: So really now I was a little, I was a
- 41:18Speaker 5: 200 pound linebacker that, uh, that was taking biology class and.
- 41:24Speaker 4: Chemistry class, carried a lunchbox around.
- 41:27Speaker 1: So I don't really blame anybody for not recruiting me. Man,
- 41:33Speaker 1: I weighed about 150, and I was 6'4, my senior
- 41:36Speaker 1: year of basketball. I relate to that. And I was
- 41:39Speaker 1: a bit of a nerd, too. Didn't have a lunchbox,
- 41:41Speaker 1: but that surprises me. But I feel a real camaraderie
- 41:44Speaker 1: with Luke Kuechly now.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Yeah, more than that, though, not so fast. Your hosts,
- 41:48Speaker 2: Pabst and Perloff, have history with Luke Kuechly. Here is
- 41:50Speaker 2: the Arizona Super Bowl... I got the ball, Luke Kuechly
- 41:53Speaker 2: in his prime, and I went at it. Not going
- 41:56Speaker 2: to work out well for me, Pearl.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Oh, boy.
- 42:00Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 42:02Speaker 2: And he was going one-quarter speed.
- 42:07Speaker 1: You got up. That's one of my favorite Dan Patrick
- 42:09Speaker 1: Show bits is when you get beat up by people.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Who are some of the names? If you're new to
- 42:13Speaker 1: Not So Fast, Paul loves to take hits from NFL players.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Who's got to you before?
- 42:17Speaker 2: Unfortunately, because Adrian Peterson put me in the protocol, I
- 42:20Speaker 2: don't remember all of them. And we've got to get
- 42:21Speaker 2: to this one. You're trying to delay this. When Luke
- 42:23Speaker 2: Keekly was coming out of college out of BC, everyone's like,
- 42:26Speaker 2: you've got to draft Luke Keekly, middle linebacker. And, you know,
- 42:28Speaker 2: people argue, middle linebackers, are they value picks in the
- 42:31Speaker 2: first round? And here's a tweet by one Andrew Perloff
- 42:34Speaker 2: that is an all-time cold take.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Oof. Luke Heakley at number 10. Panthers is not going
- 42:39Speaker 1: to work out well. Tacklers are easy to find. I
- 42:42Speaker 1: know he can cover tight ends, but come on. I mean,
- 42:45Speaker 1: my logic is rock solid.
- 42:46Speaker 2: You're standing by this tweet.
- 42:47Speaker 1: I'm standing by this tweet. Little did I know he
- 42:49Speaker 1: was going to become a Hall of Famer. The guy
- 42:51Speaker 1: weighed 200 pounds coming out of high school, Paul. I
- 42:53Speaker 1: think my point was valid.
- 42:54Speaker 2: This is an all-timer. It actually made Fred Siegel's book
- 42:57Speaker 2: of all-time old takes exposed.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Yeah, for many years, old takes exposed led off the
- 43:02Speaker 1: NFL draft by showing that tweet. Just showing, like, nobody
- 43:06Speaker 1: knows what's going to happen to these players. I mean,
- 43:08Speaker 1: did you know Luke Kuechly was going to be that good?
- 43:10Speaker 2: No, but I really hope that Luke Kuechly at his
- 43:12Speaker 2: Hall of Fame speech would have worked out your tweet,
- 43:13Speaker 2: put it on the big board behind him. All right,
- 43:16Speaker 2: let's do a little thing here we got. This is
- 43:18Speaker 2: called Why My Team May Stink. We're going to look
- 43:21Speaker 2: at a team every week, every day on That's So
- 43:24Speaker 2: Fast and why they may not work out. Now, it's
- 43:26Speaker 2: got to be a decent team. It can't be a
- 43:27Speaker 2: bad team that stinks. Okay. I'm going to start. You
- 43:29Speaker 2: don't know what's coming here. Why my team may stink,
- 43:33Speaker 2: the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Oh. This is a good one because a few years ago,
- 43:37Speaker 1: this would have been impossible. But now I think there's
- 43:39Speaker 1: a clear path for Kansas City not to be good.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes coming off an ACL. We don't even know
- 43:44Speaker 1: when he's going to be full strength. And the O-line
- 43:46Speaker 1: in front of him is in turmoil. So they have
- 43:49Speaker 1: to protect him. That's what worries me the most. Now, listen,
- 43:52Speaker 1: he's been Superman before. But, Paul, do you really have
- 43:54Speaker 1: faith in Mahomes being the old Patrick Mahomes?
- 43:57Speaker 2: I have faith in him. I don't have faith in
- 43:58Speaker 2: the people around him. Xavier Worthy is okay. Rasheed Rice,
- 44:02Speaker 2: when available, is really good. Travis Kelsey is a nice
- 44:05Speaker 2: player now. They've got a good running back. I just
- 44:07Speaker 2: don't think there are a lot of threatening people around them.
- 44:10Speaker 2: There's no Tyree Kill in the building. There's no Tyree
- 44:12Speaker 2: Kill in the building. Xavier Worthy was drafted to be that.
- 44:14Speaker 1: And they've lost some defensive players. Their defense has been
- 44:16Speaker 1: underrated through the years. You know, listen, all that being said, yes,
- 44:21Speaker 1: there is a scenario where they're like last year, a
- 44:23Speaker 1: losing team. It is hard to let go of them. Like,
- 44:26Speaker 1: we're going to do our Super Bowl picks, and they're
- 44:28Speaker 1: on our mind. They're on my mind. But, again, the
- 44:31Speaker 1: offensive line and the quarterback health, huge issues a team
- 44:34Speaker 1: doesn't want.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's why your team may stink. I don't
- 44:37Speaker 2: know what team's going to be tomorrow. It might be yours,
- 44:38Speaker 2: but tune in. All right, coming up next, constructive criticism.
- 44:42Speaker 2: We've got a lot more to come. We've got the
- 44:44Speaker 2: freezing cold takes. We've got everything coming up.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Stick around.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Not so fast.
- 44:48Speaker 1: I'm not sure I want constructive criticism.
- 44:50Speaker 2: There's some nice stuff about you.
- 44:52Speaker 1: All right.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Why my team may stink.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that's going to catch on. It's all going to
- 44:58Speaker 1: catch on. Welcome back to Not So Fast. All right, Paul,
- 45:04Speaker 1: as we said yesterday, we're not the only new show
- 45:05Speaker 1: on NBC Sports Now. John Fanta debuted last night. Did
- 45:09Speaker 1: you get to watch?
- 45:10Speaker 2: I watched all of it. He takes messages from the fans,
- 45:12Speaker 2: and he riffs back, and he doesn't know what's coming.
- 45:14Speaker 2: It's really fun.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it was super fun. And, of course, our buddy
- 45:17Speaker 1: John Fanta sent us a note with a really interesting question, Paul.
- 45:21Speaker 1: He wanted to know which NFL team do you think
- 45:24Speaker 1: everybody is underestimating this season? You want to jump in,
- 45:28Speaker 1: go first?
- 45:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it is an easy one, the Vikings. No one
- 45:31Speaker 2: really likes them that much. And I think it's about
- 45:33Speaker 2: the Kyler Murray thing. He's not the most beloved quarterback
- 45:35Speaker 2: of all time. But Kevin O'Connell and Kyler Murray together,
- 45:39Speaker 2: very tough division. They're off the radar. That's a surprising team.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Okay, I am going to sort of have a weird
- 45:45Speaker 1: one here. I think the team that's off everyone's radar
- 45:48Speaker 1: is the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Bravo. I mean,
- 45:51Speaker 1: why are we talking about the Seahawks? We're talking about
- 45:53Speaker 1: the Rams. Miles Garrett this, Aaron Donald that. Guess what?
- 45:57Speaker 1: The Seahawks won the Super Bowl. I think Mike McDonald's
- 46:00Speaker 1: a great coach. I fell in love with him after
- 46:02Speaker 1: I saw him on DP's show at Tahoe. He's very good,
- 46:05Speaker 1: and they brought back most of their defense performance. I
- 46:08Speaker 1: think they are the underestimated team in the entire NFL.
- 46:10Speaker 2: That's a little meta by you. I like that. Why
- 46:12Speaker 2: don't we stay with constructive criticism because we have some comments.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Our first show was yesterday right here on NBC Sports.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Let's get to constructive criticism, good, bad, and ugly, not
- 46:21Speaker 2: pointing any fingers. Here we go, Perloff. Here are some
- 46:24Speaker 2: tweets coming in from you, the fans.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast with Pastor Perloff. Hey, Paul,
- 46:30Speaker 2: who is that substitute teacher you're talking to? I was
- 46:34Speaker 2: going to say you're very becoming in the sport code.
- 46:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that reminded me. The first time I was ever
- 46:37Speaker 1: on TV, Paul, I was on with Craig Carton of
- 46:42Speaker 1: Carton and Boomer. Wow. On local news. And the next day,
- 46:45Speaker 1: Boomer Sison took 20 minutes making fun of why an
- 46:49Speaker 1: accountant was talking football. I got back a little bit. Yeah,
- 46:52Speaker 1: I might not look like an NFL player, but that
- 46:54Speaker 1: doesn't mean I can be like Howie Roseman, the GM.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I know my football.
- 46:57Speaker 2: You were elbow patches away from being a professor. Let's
- 46:59Speaker 2: get to the next one here. Constructive criticism.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Should quarterbacks be excluded from the NFL salary cap? Oh, man,
- 47:06Speaker 2: this is on a T for me. I've been saying
- 47:08Speaker 2: this for years. You've got to give me this.
- 47:09Speaker 1: This is a Paul take.
- 47:10Speaker 2: I think there should be a separate quarterback cap, and
- 47:12Speaker 2: you get $ 50 million to spend on the position of quarterback.
- 47:15Speaker 2: And blank million, $ 200 to spend on the rest of
- 47:18Speaker 2: your team. Then when you sign Josh Allen, you don't
- 47:20Speaker 2: have to get rid of all your linebackers. Yes, yes, yes.
- 47:23Speaker 1: But that will kill parity because if you have a
- 47:25Speaker 1: quality quarterback of $ 50 million, then you have a big
- 47:28Speaker 1: advantage over, say, the Cardinals who don't have that $ 50
- 47:31Speaker 1: million quarterback and just have the same roster.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Easy with the logic there.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you're like the NFL. You're like the commissioner Roger Goodell.
- 47:36Speaker 1: You never think of what the actual consequences are.
- 47:39Speaker 2: All right, let's get to a little bit of leftovers.
- 47:41Speaker 2: More constructive criticism tomorrow, but here's a leftover. Red Sox
- 47:44Speaker 2: pitcher Peyton Tolley.
- 47:47Speaker 1: I love this.
- 47:48Speaker 2: He hugs Dominic Maison of the Mariners while tagging him out.
- 47:51Speaker 2: He actually gives him a hug. Watch this clip.
- 47:54Speaker 1: All right. All right.
- 47:56Speaker 2: Done a line. Easy out. And hey, bro. How you doing?
- 48:01Speaker 1: That is friendly competition. That is right up Not So
- 48:04Speaker 1: Fast's alley. Keep it friendly, bud.
- 48:06Speaker 4: I love that.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Keep it friendly. Nothing personal. Nice mustache. He looks like
- 48:10Speaker 2: your neighborhood barber.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Yeah. You know one thing I get jealous of baseball players?
- 48:13Speaker 1: When you get down to first base, they always have
- 48:15Speaker 1: a lovely chat with the base runner and the first base.
- 48:17Speaker 2: You'd be perfect at first base. You're long, you're rangy,
- 48:19Speaker 2: and you're affable.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Yeah, conversationalist. I can't actually play baseball.
- 48:24Speaker 2: That would help.
- 48:24Speaker 1: All right.
- 48:25Speaker 2: It's time for the feel good. Want to feel good
- 48:26Speaker 2: before you wrap it up for the day on Not
- 48:28Speaker 2: So Fast?
- 48:28Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Tennessee Volunteer Football Program and Dolly Parton. You had me
- 48:33Speaker 2: at that. Dolly Parton, always big in Tennessee, no pun intended.
- 48:37Speaker 2: They are going to use the ultimate SEC honor, Dolly
- 48:41Speaker 2: Parton helmet stickers for the players.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Oh, wow. That's so nice.
- 48:44Speaker 2: That's awesome. I also heard they're going to name the
- 48:46Speaker 2: airport after her down in Nashville.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Okay. Does this mean they're going to be better at football? Hopefully.
- 48:52Speaker 2: I think Tennessee is in good place right now. Their
- 48:54Speaker 2: uniforms are great. But the fact is, like, imagine running
- 48:57Speaker 2: out week two after you had, like, a 200-yard performance,
- 48:59Speaker 2: and you got a couple of Dolly stickers on your helmet.
- 49:01Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 49:02Speaker 1: That is very cool. And then, obviously, have a music
- 49:04Speaker 1: blasting through the stadium.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Music blasting through the stadium.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Yeah. All right.
- 49:07Speaker 2: That is it for us. Not so fast. Day two.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Our buddy Big Cat, great to have him.
- 49:10Speaker 1: On the show. Ah, Big Cat was awesome. Luckily, he
- 49:12Speaker 1: did not light Dan Patrick on fire.
- 49:14Speaker 2: That would have been bad for us and bad for
- 49:16Speaker 2: our careers.
- 49:16Speaker 4: All right.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Tune in tomorrow. Not so fast. Every day at noon,
- 49:19Speaker 2: Dan Patrick Show. every day at 9 o'clock a.m. Eastern
- 49:22Speaker 2: right here on NBC Sports Now. That's it for us. Paps, Perloff,
- 49:25Speaker 2: talk to you tomorrow. Have a good
- 49:31Speaker 5: Night.
