Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 29th.
- 0:11Choices that shape your future. The ending of First Samuel is
- 0:16sobering. First Samuel chapter 31, verse 6
- 0:20says plainly. And Saul and his three sons and
- 0:23all his house died together. That's not just a tragic
- 0:26historical footnote. That's the culmination of a life
- 0:30of choices, small compromises, moments of pride, seasons of
- 0:35disobedience, and the gradual, devastating drift away from the
- 0:38God who had given Saul everything.
- 0:41Saul started with so much. He was chosen.
- 0:45He was anointed. He stood head and shoulders
- 0:48above everyone around him. Literally.
- 0:51The promise on his life was enormous.
- 0:53And somewhere along the way, he chose his fear over his faith,
- 0:57his pride over obedience, his own judgment over God's
- 1:01commands. And each of those choices, 1 by
- 1:041 eroded the foundation until there was nothing left to stand
- 1:08on. Proverbs chapter 19, verse 3
- 1:11speaks directly to this pattern. The foolishness of man ruins his
- 1:15way, and his heart rages against the Lord.
- 1:19It's significant that the verse doesn't just say foolishness
- 1:22ruins his way. It says his heart rages against
- 1:25the Lord. When things go wrong as a result
- 1:27of our own choices, we often turn that frustration toward
- 1:31God. We blame him for the
- 1:33consequences of our decisions. That anger becomes its own
- 1:37barrier to restoration. And verse 4 adds a quiet warning
- 1:41about relationships in hard seasons.
- 1:44Wealth brings many friends, but a poor man's friend deserts him.
- 1:48When you're doing well, people show up.
- 1:50When you're struggling, you find out who's actually there for
- 1:53you. This is the reality of shallow
- 1:56versus deep friendships, and it's why who you invest in and
- 2:00who you allow to invest in you matters so much for you.
- 2:04Today, you might be in the middle of a story that's still
- 2:07being written. You haven't reached your chapter
- 2:0931 yet. Every choice you make right now
- 2:13is building towards something. The habits you're forming, the
- 2:16values you're holding or abandoning, the direction you're
- 2:19slowly walking in. These things accumulate.
- 2:23Life doesn't usually turn on one dramatic moment.
- 2:26It turns on hundreds of ordinary ones.
- 2:29Choosing God's way in the ordinary moments isn't always
- 2:33exciting. It doesn't always look
- 2:35impressive. Sometimes it means being the
- 2:38person in your friend group who won't go along with something
- 2:41that doesn't feel right. Sometimes it means doing the
- 2:45honest thing when no one would know if you cut a corner.
- 2:48Sometimes it means waiting on God when every part of you wants
- 2:52to push ahead. But those choices stacked on top
- 2:56of each other, day after day, they build a life that lasts, a
- 3:00foundation that holds a legacy worth leaving.
- 3:04Saul's story is a warning. David's story, with all its
- 3:08flaws and failures, is also a reminder that it's never about
- 3:11being perfect. It's about keeping your heart
- 3:14pointed toward God, returning when you drift, and making the
- 3:17next right choice. Let's pray.
- 3:21Heavenly Father, thank you for guiding us through every choice
- 3:25we face. Let's all story be a warning we
- 3:28take seriously, not just a history we read casually.
- 3:32Help us to build habits and make choices today that reflect a
- 3:35life surrendered to you, not perfect, but persistent.
- 3:39Protect us from pride, from the drift of compromise, and from
- 3:43surrounding ourselves with people who pull us away from
- 3:46your truth. We want to finish well in Jesus

- 4:44Now I invite you to spend time with God in today's three-year
- 4:47Bible reading plan. Proverbs chapter 19 verses 3 to
- 4:524 World English Bible The foolishness of man subverts his
- 4:57way, His heart rages against Yahweh.
- 5:00Wealth adds many friends, but the poor is separated from his
- 5:03friend. First Samuel chapter 31 World
- 5:07English Bible Now the Philistines fought against
- 5:11Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines
- 5:14and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa.
- 5:18The Philistines overtook Saul and on his sons, and the
- 5:21Philistines killed Jonathan, Abenadab and Melchisua, the sons
- 5:25of Saul. The battle went hard against
- 5:28Saul, and The Archers overtook him, and he was greatly
- 5:31distressed by reason of The Archers.
- 5:34Then Saul said to his armor bearer, Draw your sword and
- 5:37thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and
- 5:41thrust me through and abuse me. But his armor bearer would not,
- 5:46for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword
- 5:49and fell on it. When his armor bearer saw that
- 5:52Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword and died with him.
- 5:57So Saul died, and his three sons and his armor bearer and all his
- 6:00men that same day together. When the men of Israel who were
- 6:05on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the
- 6:08Jordan saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and
- 6:11his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled,
- 6:16and the Philistines came and lived in them.
- 6:19On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the
- 6:21slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount
- 6:25Gilboa. They cut off his head, stripped
- 6:28off his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines all
- 6:31around to carry the news to the House of their idols and to the
- 6:35people. They put his armor in the House
- 6:38of the Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of
- 6:41Beit Shan. When the inhabitants of Jabish
- 6:45Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
- 6:48all the valiant men arose, went all night, and took the body of
- 6:52Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beit Shan, and
- 6:56they came to Jabish and burned them there.
- 6:59They took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in
- 7:02Jebusch and fasted 7 days. Thanks for joining us on Bible
