- 0:04On the Monday of Cyhawk Week, we welcome you to Miller and Condon
- 0:08on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:10Trent Condon and Ken Miller here with you for the next couple of
- 0:13hours talking sports with you. Thanks for starting your Labour
- 0:17Day afternoon with us as we'll take you up until 2:00 at that
- 0:20time off the bench. Sean and Lucas will take you
- 0:25from 2:00 until 5. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:28program toward the bottom of the hour.
- 0:30Scott Dockerman will join us from the Athletic.
- 0:32We will talk college football talk Hawks, we'll talk Cyhawk
- 0:36with Scott coming up here at 12:30.
- 0:39Scott again from the Athletic where he writes on college
- 0:44football, one O clock Bama, Bob, Trent and I on the weekend.
- 0:47It still has one game remaining. It's just a fascinating week.
- 0:50Got to love the sport, college football, and we'll cap the
- 0:53weekend with Obama and then probably go on record just to
- 0:56breakdown Tonight's just get our opinion, not necessarily break
- 1:00it down on TCU and UNC and then we'll have Bill Seals in here.
- 1:05Covers Iowa State cyclonereport.com, Mr. Monday
- 1:09night. We'll make it pick on tonight's
- 1:10game and I'm not sure why. It's a rough one.
- 1:14Rough one, man. I'll say you and you and Sean
- 1:17Offer threw a goose egg at. Him, well, you know how to you
- 1:20got to pick your right teammate and you're my teammate, so way
- 1:23to keep us aboard. This week.
- 1:24All right, Well, it's all uphill from here anyways, so we'll do
- 1:28that before we get out of here and turn things over to off the
- 1:30bench with Lucas and Sean from 2:00 until 5:00.
- 1:34So there was good names. There was.
- 1:35I don't know what you call it in Iowa City.
- 1:37Crap. Yeah, that's that's one word.
- 1:40Just lackluster 44 yards through the air playing Albany, right,
- 1:46right. It was just I mean, I was
- 1:50dumbfounded, Trent, I'll put it that way.
- 1:51I I just I mean, come on, This is what we get.
- 1:55This is what This is why he made all those people signed NDA so
- 1:58you'd keep secret how much you're paying Mark Gronowski and
- 2:01this is what he does. Trent, he refused.
- 2:04It's almost like he had Steve blast disease, right?
- 2:07He did. He wouldn't throw the ball.
- 2:10There were opportunities, there were plays to be made and he
- 2:14multiple. And it wasn't just the hideous
- 2:18pass to Sam Phillips. And that was as bad as you can.
- 2:21Get it wasn't the misses including the first one of the
- 2:24day. It was time in and time out.
- 2:27There were receivers and he wouldn't uncork it.
- 2:30So our seats were in the North End zone, excuse me, the South
- 2:33end zone. And so had the, you know, all 22
- 2:37vantage point on it and the number of times, yes, I'll see
- 2:41him. Phillips, why do a touchdown?
- 2:42I mean, this is a 60 yard touch easy.
- 2:44It's the guy that he was locked in on.
- 2:47And as soon as he clears the linebacker, there's nothing but
- 2:49green to the fastest guy in your team.
- 2:52And he doesn't. And he kind of checks down.
- 2:57He looked mentally broke. 44 yards.
- 3:02Not only was it awful, and it was, I mean, there's no way.
- 3:05No, I Xavier Williams. Oh, yes, OK, I'm, I'm talking
- 3:09about Gronowski. Yeah, Gronowski was awful in the
- 3:13passing game, but you couple that with we knew he had a
- 3:18shoulder surgery. Where's this big bulky brace
- 3:20that he's got on on top of it? He what he does is run the
- 3:24football. Yep, that that's what it is.
- 3:26Yep, you look at his stat line last year.
- 3:28He had three games last year where he threw over 200 yards.
- 3:30True, he is a runner, as we heard of the broadcast a lot.
- 3:33The Tim Tebow of the SES. Oh.
- 3:36Sure did my. God, Tim Tebow, Mesco Fable
- 3:39complete some passes. Yeah, he's winning Heisman's and
- 3:41probably should have won. Heisman's won Heisman.
- 3:44We got robbed the second year. I, I, I was just again, maybe I
- 3:50shouldn't have bought in because we were told throughout the
- 3:53month of August, you know, it's not really going all that well.
- 3:56There was kind of sugar coating and nobody was coming right out
- 3:59and saying, boy, Gronowski sucks or this guy's really, I think we
- 4:03sold it. We were bought, sold a Billy
- 4:05goods. Again, he's nowhere near as good
- 4:07as we thought he was going to be, but we can.
- 4:09He's not having the best month. You know, he's shaking off some
- 4:12rust, blah, blah, blah. He was awful.
- 4:15It takes me back to a year ago at this time because during
- 4:18August camp a year ago, we heard plenty of those rumblings and
- 4:22things about K McNamara, that Brendan Sullivan was Tim
- 4:25Lester's choice, that he was outplayed by Brendan Sullivan
- 4:28throughout the August camp. He didn't want to believe it.
- 4:31And we went to the Open Kids Day and McNamara was awful and yet
- 4:36Sullivan wasn't very good either.
- 4:37So just, well, let's just chalk it up to.
- 4:39That Lester of two evils, right? And what have we heard so many
- 4:42times during this camp? Tim Lester in the three
- 4:44different times Iowa media day availability, Tim Lester every
- 4:49single time to talk about how great Hank Brown.
- 4:51Hank Brown we never heard great. I don't believe when he was
- 4:54talking about Mark Gordowski never heard anything like that.
- 4:57Is it because maybe no one pressed him because he was just
- 5:00the presumptive starter from the time he got?
- 5:01Here. Oh, absolutely.
- 5:02I'm sure that is the case. But are we already trending in
- 5:06the direction once again? And I never thought we were
- 5:08going to be here, certainly not in September 1st.
- 5:10No, after you've just got through with the Great Danes of
- 5:13Albany, right? This might be the worst team
- 5:15they've played at Kennick Steam and how long?
- 5:18It's been a while. I I don't remember 1 is bad.
- 5:20No. And this was a team that was
- 5:24able to make some plays and, and do some things in the passing
- 5:27game. And, and you couldn't make plays
- 5:30and it was because of the quarterback.
- 5:32That's how you could not make why you didn't make plays in the
- 5:34passing game. I, I don't think that this is
- 5:37panic in the level of well shut the program down, but I think
- 5:41it's time to reconfigure what the upside of this program, what
- 5:44this team is this year. Well I'm already seeing posts
- 5:46that they're excited for basketball after week.
- 5:48One, we've had many of those years.
- 5:51Well, basketball's coming. Yeah, Week one.
- 5:54Well, here we go. I mean obviously overreaction
- 5:58but I don't know. I hope it is on reacting because
- 6:00we saw with our own two eyes it was.
- 6:02Putrid, well, you know, he's never played in front of that
- 6:06kind of crowd. He played.
- 6:08For championships, you're playing Albany.
- 6:11He was too revved up. What do you think it's going to
- 6:13be next week? Really.
- 6:15You think it's going to be like walking into North Dakota?
- 6:17You think it's going to be like walking in to Vermilion?
- 6:22It's going to be a little bit more charged up than going into
- 6:24the unidote. Yeah, those folks and grand
- 6:26folks, they take it pretty seriously.
- 6:27Trent. That's a hell of a rivalry.
- 6:29He is walking in to a hornet's nest, and if that made him
- 6:32nervous on Saturday, Hawkeye fans look out.
- 6:36This is going to be. And Cyclone fans will be in full
- 6:39throat because that is a confident group, as they should,
- 6:42absolutely should be. Trent, I got to give on one
- 6:48hand, Campbell's being Campbell again, right?
- 6:52With the depth chart, you know. Does he do?
- 6:53It for me does he Probably because he knows I'm going to
- 6:56overreact. Yes, you are.
- 6:58The depth chart comes out, but keep in mind you don't have to
- 7:00put it on availability report. Birds listed as the starter
- 7:04after not being on it for the K State game, the South Dakota
- 7:07game. There he is in his place.
- 7:08He's starting. He didn't dress, no, there was
- 7:12no day this past week that he was going to start.
- 7:15But anyways, that aside, let's get to the good.
- 7:16Yes, but Campbell being Campbell drives me nuts.
- 7:19Yes, it does. We.
- 7:20Don't. But I got to give Campbell and
- 7:21his staff credit because did you see what happened in Manhattan?
- 7:25That team was not ready to play. That team had a Dublin hangover.
- 7:30The team was the names, not. At all?
- 7:32Not at all. They were ready to go.
- 7:34Oh my God, were they ready to go?
- 7:36This was I mean Patton back-to-back weeks game changing
- 7:40plays maybe. I know it's crazy to say that
- 7:43his interception was 14 to 7 was a game changer, but they showed
- 7:48no signs of stop in South Dakota to that.
- 7:50Point No, absolutely not. And I think on that play, I
- 7:53believe because the ball was tipped by the receiver, yes,
- 7:56into the hands of Patton, I think the ball is actually
- 7:58intended for the kid that was behind him, really, who I think
- 8:01was open now. I'll have to it's.
- 8:03Football replay so sure you don't know for sure.
- 8:05I think he would have caught and he would have been inside the if
- 8:08that would have happened. It was about to be 14 a piece,
- 8:1014 a piece. Change from there and then on.
- 8:13Just on I mean. We can't come up with enough
- 8:16superlatives about Rocco back. It's unbelievable.
- 8:18Isn't he so cool? Yeah.
- 8:20Now the defensive game plan for South Dakota, can you bring some
- 8:23pressure? Because what you were doing was
- 8:25not working. Now, was that the offensive line
- 8:27for Iowa State? I mean, I that's a.
- 8:28Good question. That's.
- 8:29Because that's never been the offensive line, right In the
- 8:32last 10 years for Iowa State. But maybe it was this week,
- 8:36maybe it was I still when it when it comes to the clones and
- 8:41Dylan Lee was unbelievable. That was garbage.
- 8:43Time it was, yeah. The the running game still I'm
- 8:47I'm still questioning a little bit, but the passing game not I
- 8:50mean Gabe Burkle. Is Gabe Burkle going to play on
- 8:53Sunday? So I had this on my notes
- 8:55because I know that you absolutely love Bramer.
- 8:58Yes, I do. I do too, no?
- 9:00Good player. Yeah, Gabe Burkle's a stud.
- 9:02Gabe Burkle believable He would be a starter for 120 teams.
- 9:07You see the Rapids kid, right? He is.
- 9:09He is great and that was what I was going to say.
- 9:12He's going to play on Sundays. Yes, he absolutely is.
- 9:15That tight end room is deep. Oh my God.
- 9:17Stacked Tyler Moore. Another guy that I put a star by
- 9:21was Townsend, and seeing him, he's got some.
- 9:24Wiggle to him, He really does. And they used him on the run
- 9:27game there on the little jets we play.
- 9:29But just him. He made that one play down on
- 9:31the near sideline and he just kind of scooted around like get
- 9:34that guy got all in his space. You know, he reminded you guy
- 9:38that just graduated and sketching balls for the Houston
- 9:41Texans. Yeah, he was in building this
- 9:42past weekend, him and his teammate.
- 9:44Jay Dole, look, I mean, there was a lot of similarities in
- 9:46Townsend. Maybe he's got more wiggle to
- 9:48him. He's got some shake.
- 9:49I don't know if he's got the speed of Jaylen Dole, but it
- 9:52looks like they do have something there and I get why
- 9:53the hype was surrounding him. We didn't see him over in
- 9:56Dublin. We need to see more of him going
- 9:58forward. He was outstanding, really.
- 9:59Was Eskelson Eskelson that right away pass?
- 10:02Yeah, right down the field, I, I, I saw a kid playing
- 10:06quarterback I'd never heard of before.
- 10:07Alex Minsky. No, I heard of him, Major
- 10:10Cantrell, who gets into the game late.
- 10:14I, I wanted him to score. I mean, I don't know if he'll
- 10:16ever get an opportunity to play again, but wanted him to get
- 10:19into the Angel. But I got to stop.
- 10:20I, I got to give credit where credit is due.
- 10:23Conradie, 63 yards. What a bomb.
- 10:28So Cyclone fans would have to help me out with this.
- 10:34What are the biggest kicks in Iowa State history?
- 10:36Well, see, here's the two that I think of, yeah.
- 10:38OK, there's a long list of misses.
- 10:40There's a long list. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:42Chance to win the Big 12 N Shaggy.
- 10:46Yes. 1513 all. All of them via the field.
- 10:50Goal 5 for five and a guy that going into that was somaligned.
- 10:52I think he was. Didn't they get him?
- 10:56Didn't they put out an all points bill bulletin on campus?
- 10:59If you've ever kicked in high school, we need a kicker type of
- 11:02thing. And they found Brett Culberson.
- 11:04I've got his number on my cell phone.
- 11:05I should reach out to him this week.
- 11:07But anyways, comes in and he kicks 5 field goals.
- 11:09Huge Cole Netten, huge kick to beat.
- 11:13Beat Iowa in Cyhawk obviously last year.
- 11:16Conradi. Does Conradi have two of the
- 11:19most memorable kicks now in Iowa State football history?
- 11:23I mean, anytime you beat Iowa in Kennick, last wasn't the last
- 11:27play of the game, but your last possession.
- 11:29That's on the list. But now not only to have, you
- 11:32know, the longest kick for your school history, but it also in
- 11:36your home venue. That's pretty rare air.
- 11:40And he's got two of them. Yeah, 2004.
- 11:42I'm looking at culverts and his bio on cyclones.com.
- 11:45He kicked at Lincoln. He joined midway through the
- 11:47season, Yeah. They put on an APB.
- 11:49Yes, so bad it was. And he wasn't very good in the
- 11:52beginning either. But a year later.
- 11:55He was a real splitter. He kicked at Lincoln in high
- 11:57school. You're right though, these are
- 11:59263. Just seeing where they spotted
- 12:02that ball, he was like. Well, it was the right time in
- 12:06the. I mean, you're not going to try
- 12:08that midway through the 1st whatever.
- 12:10Yeah, there was one time to try it either at the end of the game
- 12:12when he needed one or at the end of the half and they didn't.
- 12:15To his credit, I mean, he probably had a couple of yards
- 12:17to spare on that bad boy too. So the confidence you wouldn't
- 12:22want to believe would elevate him.
- 12:25Like he's 4 for 10 from 40 to 49.
- 12:28That's where my knock is on, right, Because there's a lot of
- 12:30kicks from that range and I don't trust him from that range,
- 12:33but he certainly open in my eyes and and credit where credit is
- 12:36due, Kalakari, that was a hell of a kick.
- 12:40So well done there. But I was stated was just how
- 12:43far depth the depth chart did they go, Trent?
- 12:46As deep as they wanted to, maybe Flora looked like an absolute
- 12:49God. And what back-to-back return 99
- 12:51Yarder and you're not breaking that record.
- 12:53No. Just a toe on the line that held
- 12:57and then he comes, right, That's right call plus.
- 12:59Yeah, and he comes back with another was at 55 yards, the
- 13:02second one. And he was sucking wind after
- 13:04that, wasn't he? Anybody was 2 55 seven.
- 13:08The final look again credit to the staff to the nutritionist,
- 13:12whoever was in charge of the sleep, whoever was assigned
- 13:15something after that K state and going into it look to the look
- 13:18to Manhattan for what went wrong.
- 13:20They almost if it would have should have got beat.
- 13:23I was stayed on the air on a complete clubbing.
- 13:25What else from the weekend caught your attention?
- 13:27How about Utah? Oh, Utah is, I mean, is it Utah?
- 13:30Iowa State? Is that the 1/2?
- 13:32Arizona State, maybe. I'm with you, Trent.
- 13:35I think you're. One I watched a lot, I watched
- 13:36quite a bit of that. I had that on one of the TV's
- 13:38late on Saturday night and was not overly impressed with what I
- 13:41saw. They were just ton of penalties
- 13:45just going through the motion since Northern Arizona too.
- 13:48So you don't want to overreact to that part of it.
- 13:50But it for me, it's Utah, Iowa State, 1-2, whatever order you
- 13:53want to put them in. And the gap is significant.
- 13:56But the utes they bring in Dampier from New Mexico.
- 14:00We knew we could run, but he can Chuck it.
- 14:02He can Chuck it. Yeah, I'm glad I have that Utah
- 14:04ticket. But anyways that that aside,
- 14:08they look really really good. Should we slide through the Big
- 14:1112 a little bit more and we'll jump over the Big 10?
- 14:13A couple other takeaways that I had there.
- 14:15You mentioned the Kansas State one.
- 14:16I mean, that was just absolutely eye opening the other one.
- 14:20And maybe like you knew, Hawaii was kind of in a bad spot coming
- 14:24off the the Week 0 game that they had and and doing it, but
- 14:27Arizona. Did the Hawaii quarterback play?
- 14:31I know he was banged up in the game against Stanford.
- 14:33Did he play? I believe it was the the kid
- 14:36that played, but he was dealing with that foot injury.
- 14:38Yeah, he did play. He did, but he just wasn't very.
- 14:40Good. And he was able to go the
- 14:41distance. Well, he was the no another kid
- 14:43came out there. Yeah, he went 18 to 31 and then
- 14:45the backup came in. I'll Weaver for.
- 14:47Him So did you see any of the Arizona game?
- 14:49I did not see a single. Play I did a little bit and it
- 14:53was and then the highlight package afterwards, but Fafida
- 14:56looked like Fafida, this guy we saw two years ago like.
- 14:58We thought we were going to see last.
- 14:59Year and they were able to run the ball were they it's against
- 15:01why yeah, but Arizona maybe back to a sneaky team.
- 15:06OK, they're not going to win the league.
- 15:07But a six and 6 maybe? Right, yeah, they pull it Upset,
- 15:10maybe an upset that decides, you know who gets feel?
- 15:12Free to be at Arizona State in late November, that would be
- 15:14that would work. Absolutely.
- 15:17Other than that, a lot of blowouts in the Big 12.
- 15:19This week, though, for the Big 12, I mean, we go back to
- 15:21Friday. What the game I'm most
- 15:22interested in? Iowa State.
- 15:24Well, of course, I mean that second.
- 15:26Yeah, right. Yeah, you're right.
- 15:28The game. That's the game that piques my
- 15:31interest the second most. Kansas, Missouri.
- 15:35Yeah, that's it. Yep, Yep.
- 15:37That's it for me. There's a big there's a a game
- 15:41in the Big 10 that's got both yours and my interest because
- 15:44I'm all over Illinois and you think dookies are going to beat
- 15:46them. I don't know if I'm going to go
- 15:48that far. I'll be grabbing the.
- 15:49Point. It's a tight number, isn't it?
- 15:51Like a field goal I think. 2 1/2 in some it's. 2 1/2 now by the
- 15:55way, the side hawk line it was circle was 3 1/2 yesterday
- 15:59afternoon. I think it's across the board 3
- 16:01right now. Three's everywhere was when I
- 16:04checked before going on the air. What about, let me ask you about
- 16:07Michigan and we'll do more of this, obviously, when Bama comes
- 16:10bored. But I mean, I think I thought
- 16:14Underwood backed it up. I mean, is the bravado was
- 16:17clearly on full display. College football's never seen a
- 16:19quarterback like a freshman quarterback like me.
- 16:21All right, a little over the top.
- 16:23But you know what? He looked pretty damn good.
- 16:25I my pick is taken from that yes, Underwood looked really
- 16:28good a defense kind of showed some holes in it defense New
- 16:32Mexico and they got 3 interceptions, but still New
- 16:35Mexico was able to move the ball better than I anticipated they
- 16:38would. I thought this thing was
- 16:39destined for you know 31 nothing as opposed to 3417.
- 16:42So it's Michigan, I'm sure they're going to be okay, but
- 16:45that was kind of a take away is I thought this was going to be
- 16:47an elite Michigan defense and. There was normally has been
- 16:50late, yeah. There were some more holes than
- 16:52I anticipated for the Wolverines.
- 16:54Maryland's got a quarterback. Malik Washington looked really
- 16:56good, but they're Maryland. Not that the radio.
- 16:58Very odd radar. They'll get off to a good start
- 17:00and then they'll fall apart late because that's what Locksley
- 17:02does. Probably real quick on Texas,
- 17:04Ohio State, I know there's a lot of people that think Arch
- 17:08Manning is a bust. Matt Patricia game plan against
- 17:11the best quarterbacks in the world for a lot of years.
- 17:14I know he had Belichick helping him, which I think helps Matt
- 17:16Patricia. Obviously, Matt Patricia out
- 17:20schemed who has ever called him plays for Ohio State.
- 17:23They did what you do against a guy making his first career
- 17:26start on the road now. Why did you not pick that game?
- 17:28You were all over that game all week.
- 17:29Long, I don't know, it was the same thing I was with you with
- 17:31LSU. I just picked the wrong ones.
- 17:34You know, I have a list of 10 to 12 games, the five I gave up,
- 17:36the wrong ones, and that's going to happen some weeks.
- 17:39But you're right, I absolutely loved Ohio State all week long.
- 17:43And what Patricia did seemingly every single time is show you
- 17:47one thing. Yeah.
- 17:48And then absolutely, we can do something completely different.
- 17:51So we're driving over to Iowa City.
- 17:53So I was listening on the radio to the call, so I listened to.
- 17:56Westwood ones call. It wasn't Westwood one, it was
- 17:59the local ones for each of the broadcasts.
- 18:01I didn't even realize because I clicked on it on the
- 18:03second-half. So listen to Ohio State, want to
- 18:05hear Jim Lachey, Luke Lachey's dad, on the broadcast.
- 18:08Haven't heard very often. It was good broadcast.
- 18:10And I start the second-half and I'm like, well, that sounds
- 18:12different because it's the Texas call.
- 18:15And so I get to the tailgate, the 4th down call and they, they
- 18:19said, well, you know, Arch just slipped on that one.
- 18:21And so I'm asking my buddies that I'm watching the game at
- 18:23the tailgate, and they said no. He just really didn't give that
- 18:26good of an effort. I'm like, oh boy, Bag Dog Bob
- 18:29was out out there with the Texas broadcast.
- 18:31Play the game No. No, no, no, no.
- 18:32This was like early in the early in the third quarter when they
- 18:35were down at the five or maybe it's in the.
- 18:37First half, you know, I don't remember the play you're talking
- 18:39about. But it was 4th and goal, they
- 18:40didn't get it and they said the Texas broadcast said that he
- 18:43just slipped. Saw the replay, he didn't slip.
- 18:46Is that right? He just didn't give the effort
- 18:48on that one. But they ran arch a little bit
- 18:50more. That's going to happen.
- 18:51He's going to be fine. I think he's just two but one
- 18:54thing, but. For him to be the anointed
- 18:57Heisman front runner going into the game in the 1st or the 1st
- 19:01overall pick in the draft to come on.
- 19:03No, he was not that guy. Want to mention the Battle of
- 19:06the Tigers? We'll get to this.
- 19:07It was a game. It was what you saw with those
- 19:11two teams and LSU did that team win a national championship.
- 19:15I wish I had some tickets. Yeah, yeah, missed opportunity.
- 19:18I. Think so too.
- 19:20And now you look at this team, they spent Brian Kelly.
- 19:26Kelly was one of the coaches also a couple years ago.
- 19:30Yeah, he was doing the goofy thing, you know, with the the
- 19:32recruit. And then taking the picture, the
- 19:33accent, yes. And the fake accent and all
- 19:36those things. But he was one of the coaches,
- 19:38one of many that at the beginning of NIL really two
- 19:41years ago when it took over and he took over at LSU.
- 19:43Everyone's going to get the same that that's that's the way we're
- 19:47going to do that. He's not alone.
- 19:48This isn't a knock on Brian Kelly, right?
- 19:50But I think it finally, well, somebody got to him.
- 19:53The realization we can't do it that way.
- 19:55You look at what they spend in the portal, that defense look
- 19:58out. That defense is got dudes all.
- 20:01Over because I think Clemson's still pretty good.
- 20:03I I do too and they got dudes and they looked inept for long
- 20:08stretches of that football. Game.
- 20:09You know who maybe is big of A and about face other than all
- 20:14weekend long for me? Garrett Nussmayer.
- 20:17Yes. He looked really good, didn't
- 20:18he? He did, Yeah.
- 20:20I think I underestimated his game.
- 20:21He was terrific in the football game.
- 20:23And then last night, Notre Dame and Miami played in the rain.
- 20:28You know what, CJ Carthink. Notre Dame's got a quarterback.
- 20:30He's fine. I think he's fine.
- 20:32Yeah, I'm with you. Not big concerns there.
- 20:35No, No, I think Beck was OK. I think Carson Beck was maybe
- 20:38better than I thought. And Eli Reardon, he's the Valley
- 20:43kid. He's really good.
- 20:45And he you might hear his name called in the first round of the
- 20:48NFL. Draft.
- 20:49Wouldn't that be something? How about the kid that
- 20:50transferred to Miami from Fargo, ND to South Beach?
- 20:56I think that's a freaking culture change.
- 21:00Oh man Fargo to South Beach my God.
- 21:03Anyways. South Carolina Vitech, that was.
- 21:06It was fun, Yeah, it was a fun game.
- 21:09I love seller. Seller's a hell of a player.
- 21:11Seller's a first round pick. And every time you see Nick
- 21:15Harbour, who made the big play, they don't really open it up.
- 21:18Every time you see him make one of those plays like why doesn't
- 21:21he do this non-stop? He's 64 track speed and all SEC
- 21:25track runner AT64220. How how does he he have 150
- 21:31catches? Why isn't he?
- 21:31Jeremiah Smith? Back to that, what do you think
- 21:35of Julian saying? He did enough.
- 21:38Yeah, he did enough. You could tell he was trying to
- 21:40go to Smith. Well, yeah, do that.
- 21:42Yeah. Yes.
- 21:42Good job, kid. Yeah, try to.
- 21:43Well, Smith had a couple of drops, too.
- 21:45Hit early in the game. Early in the game.
- 21:46Yeah, couple of pretty surprising ones.
- 21:48But yeah, just keep chucking it to that guy.
- 21:50You're going to be in good shape.
- 21:51Yeah, Ohio State's a contender. Alice, who's a contender?
- 21:54Yep, no doubt Alabama's not a. Contender.
- 21:56Alabama's not a contender. I heard something.
- 22:00Is a contender. No, Well, that that defense is
- 22:03really good. Archers got to be better because
- 22:06their schedule, there's going to be landmines in there at
- 22:09Oklahoma game Red River looks a little bit more and more
- 22:11difficult. But when you're going through
- 22:13and you're looking at these squads, the number of teams that
- 22:17can win a national championship, I come back to this often.
- 22:20I just don't know how big that list is.
- 22:22I don't know how many teams can now.
- 22:24Did you? See any of Georgia?
- 22:25I did not see a play. Saw the five minute little
- 22:28highlight package that. Was it?
- 22:29I didn't see anything. I didn't see Penn State.
- 22:33Same thing, yeah. Didn't see Penn State, they'll
- 22:34be part of it. Fascinating.
- 22:36What a what a what a sport, what a sports.
- 22:39Cyhawk week it is on maybe. Oh, this is what I got to say
- 22:43about Alabama. I heard this coming in today.
- 22:45Alabama's never dealt with this in the social media age as we
- 22:49know it today. Yeah.
- 22:51I mean, you go back to when things are and and imagine what
- 22:56it was like when Francione decided to leave Alabama for
- 22:59Texas A&M and they've never dealt with this savings here.
- 23:02Number one wasn't great. They lost to Louisiana Monroe,
- 23:05but we know what happened here too.
- 23:07Right in the table to see now what this is going to because
- 23:10it's going to get ugly. For sure, without a doubt.
- 23:14That fan base has been so spoiled.
- 23:17It was now 5 losses under the boar as a double digit favorite.
- 23:235 losses. That can't happen.
- 23:26It can't. Happen in the 11 years previous
- 23:27under Dick Sabin. How many?
- 23:28Five. Yeah.
- 23:31Unbelievable really, truly is how the mighty have fallen by
- 23:35the way. Game day.
- 23:36To no surprise, just a massive, massive number of people
- 23:39watching it. Final 15 minutes of the program.
- 23:425.1 million people tuned in to watch the final headgear
- 23:46selection of Lee corso's long and distinguished career. 3.5
- 23:51was the was the average number of viewers throughout about 5.1
- 23:55put it on. Well done the shoe for putting
- 23:58it up on the big screen at the at the stadium and well done by
- 24:03Fox. But you know what?
- 24:04On one hand, well done by Fox picking it up.
- 24:06What else were they going to do? Everybody's going to be
- 24:08watching. Yes, yes, they may as well watch
- 24:10it on your network, whether it's your programming or not.
- 24:12All right, real quick, let's get Mike in here, then Scott
- 24:14Dockerman joins us to Waterloo. We go.
- 24:17Hello. All right, Kenny, Kenny, Trent,
- 24:19I'll tell you one thing. This is the best tight end room
- 24:22we've ever had. They're better in Kohler and
- 24:24Allen. They got the speed.
- 24:26Those guys were great tight ends, but they these guys run
- 24:29like wide receivers and, and I hear there's a ad in the paper
- 24:34in Iowa City to get the basketball team to cover these
- 24:36guys in the end zone because you cannot cover A6766 guy in the
- 24:41end zone. They got great hands.
- 24:43And one other other thing. You know who's a dark horse for
- 24:46the Heisman? I hate that.
- 24:47I know people don't. Does this Does his first name
- 24:50starts with R? Well, Rocco Beck is playing
- 24:53lights out. Is anybody playing better
- 24:55quarterback in the nation than Rocco?
- 24:57He's having a great start to his season, like there's no doubt.
- 25:00About that, they were bragging about his arm, and I've heard
- 25:02people say he didn't have an arm on the on the television, they
- 25:05were bragging about his. No, I mean 19 and 20 set a
- 25:08school record. That can't get much better than
- 25:10that. Mike, enjoy the week.
- 25:13Yeah, good to hear from you. You know, Wilson likes the
- 25:16quarterback. I don't know how he's going to
- 25:17make it. He's king, you know?
- 25:18I mean, good God, he's tough, but boy, he takes some shots,
- 25:21doesn't he? My God.
- 25:22Can he make it through the course that's.
- 25:24What? I don't know, right?
- 25:25If he does, Georgia Tech's got a team.
- 25:27Georgia Tech's got a team. Take your time out.
- 25:29Come back. Scott Dockerman joins us.
- 25:32Glad you're with us on a Labor Day.
- 25:33Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports
- 25:36Radio Network. I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back
- 25:46Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller with
- 25:49you until 2 in our number 2 Bama.
- 25:51Bob Trenton I talk more college football Bottom of that hour
- 25:55Bill Seals. It covers Iowa State
- 25:57cyclonereport.com part of on three media stops on in.
- 26:01Let's get our friend Scott Docman.
- 26:02He writes on college football and other topics, but mostly
- 26:05college football at the athletic and he is with us.
- 26:09Hello, Doc Trenton Ken, how are you, Sir?
- 26:12Not bad. Beautiful day here on this
- 26:14Monday and we're in the middle of some, you know, one one of
- 26:18the best weekends, opening weekends I could remember and
- 26:22here we got, you know, junior rivalry weekend coming up for a
- 26:25couple of teams. No, absolutely love it.
- 26:28We get to Sidehawk and in just a second and some of the bigger
- 26:31games from this past weekend. I guess we have to start with
- 26:34you just on, on what you saw from Granowski.
- 26:38Obviously the expectations were a lot higher than 8 of 15 for 44
- 26:42yards through the air, missed a whole bunch of open receivers.
- 26:46Your your thoughts Doc what what happened there?
- 26:50Well, you've got to give him an F for sure.
- 26:52That was horrible. I'm not going to mince words and
- 26:55say that. Well, you know, you know, things
- 26:57will come along. He's got to be better than that.
- 26:59I mean, they invested a lot in him and he was terrible and
- 27:02every single facet when it came to throwing the football.
- 27:05Now I've, I'll say this, I've seen him throw it a lot better
- 27:09than that. And he obviously you don't throw
- 27:1210,000 yards, you know, in your career, if, if you have
- 27:17everything is going well. So I, I don't understand, you
- 27:20know what exactly he he was, you know what, what exactly went
- 27:24wrong? And then afterwards he tried to
- 27:26say, well, he's a little too anxious, a little too this.
- 27:29Yeah, get it out of your system. But you know, you're, you're
- 27:32supposed to be in the NFL this year.
- 27:33That's what you're gunning for. So now, you know, all of that
- 27:36can be forgotten depending on how he plays this week.
- 27:39But he's to play a lot better because otherwise, I mean, it's
- 27:42going to be a tough game for Iowa no matter what.
- 27:44I mean, for both teams, it's going to be tough because it's a
- 27:46rivalry game. But if he doesn't play any
- 27:48better than this, then I mean a disaster is lurking and aims for
- 27:53Iowa. Doc, I take you back to a year
- 27:56ago, we heard during August camp, I know you brought it up
- 27:58to us, Chad Leistekow bring brought it up that Brendan
- 28:01Sullivan looked like he was out playing or at least you guys
- 28:03were hearing out playing Kate McNamara.
- 28:05And I think a lot of us push to the side.
- 28:07Well, he's just coming off the injury.
- 28:08It's going to be OK. We heard Tim Lester multiple
- 28:11times here during camp. The two times we got to hear
- 28:12from him say that Hank Brown had a tremendous camp, never heard
- 28:15those kind of superlatives. Should we maybe be concerned
- 28:19about that and maybe the backup is a little bit closer than what
- 28:22we thought coming into the year with Gornowski because it sounds
- 28:24like this August camp did not go very well for him?
- 28:28Yeah, I, you know, I've heard mixed reviews on the camp.
- 28:32So, you know, I just kind of wait and see what happens in the
- 28:34games in the first game was not a very good game.
- 28:37No question. As far as Hank Brown goes,
- 28:39there's been a lot of positivity around him and a lot of it has
- 28:42come from from Tim Lester and you know, where did where does
- 28:46that go? You know, it's hard to say.
- 28:48I think at this point you've got to ride with with Gronowski and
- 28:52Iowa State week. He's done it a million times and
- 28:55you know, it's out to go to state.
- 28:57He's got the pedigree, but he also has to be better.
- 29:00And, and he to his credit afterwards, you know, he didn't
- 29:04try to say, well, I thought I played OK or I thought I played
- 29:07well, you know, kind of said would say that or Deacon Hill
- 29:10would say that once in a while. And no, he didn't sugarcoat it
- 29:14at all. But you know, I I think I would
- 29:17give it till halftime by hot games before I I really come to
- 29:22a full evaluation, because if he's missing receivers the way
- 29:25he was missing them the other day, he does that names again.
- 29:29You know, this the season's going to be too difficult.
- 29:32You've vested too much in everybody.
- 29:35You know, you've got to play it like a business now and you've
- 29:37got to say, hey, dude, are you all right?
- 29:39Because if you're not, we're going to the other guy.
- 29:40And if you are all right, get it together because we can't afford
- 29:44to play like this in this position.
- 29:46It's almost like he had the yips, you know, he just, it was
- 29:49couldn't, couldn't make the throw like Steve Sachs back in
- 29:52the day. You remember Sachs, the second
- 29:54basement anyways, Phil? Park Hill.
- 29:57There's another one, Phil Parker's defense.
- 30:00Your thoughts from what you saw? I thought it was a good first
- 30:04game. They they gave a little bit, you
- 30:07know, again, sometimes you also have to judge it against the
- 30:10opponent. They only allowed 176 total
- 30:13yards. They gave up one some somewhat
- 30:16decent drive and that they scored on on you Albany and and
- 30:20I I I think, you know, I would have liked to have seen a little
- 30:25more pressure, you know, another turnover, you know, a turnover
- 30:28or two. In some ways you got to respect
- 30:31Albany for for at least not giving into that.
- 30:34But you know, again, that the competition ramps up
- 30:37significantly this week. I thought by and large they
- 30:40played OK, but let's, let's see what they play against, against
- 30:43a real offensive line, against one of the better quarterbacks
- 30:46in the country. And you know, so I, I guess I'm
- 30:50not saying it's an incomplete grade.
- 30:51I thought they played well. But I also am kind of like given
- 30:55an incomplete grade because of the the all that you're playing.
- 31:00Yeah. Doc, you've been covering this
- 31:02game for a long time and we've seen a few times where I was
- 31:05stayed as had felt like an advantage coming in and I was
- 31:07been able to find a way 2011 I think the biggest example of
- 31:10that. But this Iowa State team looks
- 31:13different than maybe anything we've seen in the Campbell era.
- 31:16It's been, we're so used to the slow starts and really outside
- 31:19of last year, it's kind of been a big talking point about Matt
- 31:21Campbell's program. That's not the case here.
- 31:23They have hit the ground running and they're playing at an
- 31:25incredibly high level. Does that change the equation at
- 31:28all for you just how well Iowa State's played going into this
- 31:31game Saturday? A little bit because you can't
- 31:34come away from watching Iowa State the first two weeks and
- 31:37not be impressed to to play the way they did in Dublin against a
- 31:41rivalry in a rival and in a ranked game.
- 31:45And, and one that, you know, they had to make the right plays
- 31:48at the right times to pull it out.
- 31:49And they did. And then to come back and play
- 31:52what I think is a pretty good FCS opponent and blow them out
- 31:55the way they did you. And they looked like they took
- 31:58the next step from game one to Game 2, which every coach talks
- 32:01about, especially for developmental programs that you
- 32:04make your most progress between 1:00 and 2:00.
- 32:06And, and I think you saw that kind of growth too.
- 32:09So I, I, you know, that to me is, is it's a little different
- 32:15because Iowa State sometimes is, is trying to feel itself as it
- 32:18goes into this game, you know, and, and, and I was all
- 32:21generally in that position too. And in some respects, I think of
- 32:25it as kind of the reverse of 2021 where Iowa played Indiana
- 32:29right off the bat in a ranked battle and blew him out.
- 32:31And it felt like they were in a better, you know, they were
- 32:34really moving when they played Iowa State.
- 32:36Their offense wasn't very good. Their defense was outstanding,
- 32:39you know, but on the other side, not to completely rain on Iowa
- 32:43here, their running game was pretty good.
- 32:46And the offensive line did whatever it wanted to do in that
- 32:48game. And and really the the sack,
- 32:51there was one sack and it was just kind of a delayed blitz and
- 32:54and the the guard was double team in the the nose and and it
- 32:57kind of got through. And even then, Gronowski got the
- 32:59ball off And this wasn't, you know, it's called kind of in the
- 33:02grass. So I I think that in Iowa's
- 33:05case, you know, that this is this isn't the worst thing in
- 33:09the world to go in feeling like everybody's against you,
- 33:12everybody's doubting you. Those kind of motivations always
- 33:14work, especially in rivalry games.
- 33:16And and I think in this case, you know, the people flex their
- 33:20rivalry muscles in this game, match up a lot.
- 33:23And and for Iowa, do they make that kind of progress?
- 33:26Can Gronowski bounce back from that performance?
- 33:29Because I do think they're a pretty physical team and they're
- 33:31not just going to, you know, take a back seat and play really
- 33:35poorly in this game. You.
- 33:36What do you think or who do you think gets the nod as far as
- 33:41running the football for Iowa? Xavier Williams was
- 33:43unbelievable. I don't know the status of
- 33:45Bolton. I don't know if anybody does at
- 33:48this point, but Xavier Williams gets this opportunity.
- 33:50My God, here we go again. You know that He's just not
- 33:55that. He came out of nowhere, but I
- 33:56don't think anybody expected him to have the day that he did.
- 34:00No, you know, that that's somebody who is really is
- 34:05really, you know, shown up a lot and everybody's talked about
- 34:08significantly, but you just kind of wonder, you know, if that
- 34:12translates. And yes, it did.
- 34:14He's he's a guy that I didn't know he was that quick and
- 34:18elusive. And you got those kind of, you
- 34:20know, massive, strong legs to go along with it.
- 34:23I mean, it's kind of Lashawn Daniels and but with a little
- 34:26more quickness then. And that's something that, you
- 34:28know, he's got a low center of gravity and he's got good speed.
- 34:31So, you know, I would expect if if Tamari Moulton can't go or if
- 34:35he's injured and is going to be used sparingly, that they move
- 34:39right on to Xavier Williams. That was a tremendous opening
- 34:41day performance and he showcased a lot.
- 34:43But I think you'll also see, you know, the the least, you know,
- 34:47two or three other running backs to go along with them.
- 34:50I mean, TJ Washington's played well.
- 34:51He's a little quicker back and you got to get him out there.
- 34:55You know, Jazz Patterson, all he's done is is play hard and
- 34:57play well every time he gets out there.
- 34:59So I would expect those 3 for sure.
- 35:01And if not Nathan McNeil, get some action, too.
- 35:04Doc, of course, you're on the national scene now for college
- 35:06football, and I saw that you wrote a little bit about
- 35:09Alabama, Florida State, the Alabama side.
- 35:12We touched on a little bit at the top of the Florida State
- 35:14side. Does it just give hope to
- 35:16everybody across the country? Look, they went 2 and 10 last
- 35:18year after a 13 and no season the year previous.
- 35:21Just how different college football is.
- 35:23And you don't have to go through the muck for three years to
- 35:26rebuild your program. You can do it incredibly quick,
- 35:28quickly, as Florida State has shown.
- 35:31I think it does if you're a blue blood caliber program that it
- 35:35can happen really quick, especially in a game like that.
- 35:37I mean, nobody was expecting after you, as you said, the
- 35:40disaster the Florida State was, but they're only, you know, two
- 35:43years removed from the 13 win season as well.
- 35:45So they they fell apart early. They went to over to Dublin last
- 35:51year, got beat and then just kind of fell apart And and now
- 35:55you but you can change the vibe with the transfer portal.
- 35:57You can get new players and exit, you know, of course, the
- 36:01other ones out. And I think that is does give
- 36:03people some hope, as does like in Indiana last year, you know,
- 36:06being the losing this program in college football history and
- 36:09then, you know, hiring the right coach, getting the right players
- 36:11in the portal. So there are those success
- 36:13stories. But but I I don't want to
- 36:15minimize what they were able to do because they took it to
- 36:17Alabama. They dominated the line of
- 36:19scrimmage. I mean, Thomas Castellanos, you
- 36:21know, through the, you know, the summer, yeah, he said all that
- 36:24stuff and everybody's expecting, oh boy, this is going to be like
- 36:2656 to 7. And no, they they dominated that
- 36:30game. They're they're a good team.
- 36:31So the ACC was a big winner this weekend with Miami and Florida
- 36:36State pulling off those victories.
- 36:38And if those two teams are playing well, then that really
- 36:42makes the ACC look a lot different.
- 36:44And, you know, Clemson lost a tough one, but you know, to LSU,
- 36:47I think it's really good, too. So I think the ACC and the Big
- 36:5010 are the two big winners after the first big opening weekend
- 36:53of. Course the ACC is not done yet.
- 36:56Doc, what do you expect to hear? What do you expect to see
- 36:58tonight? North Carolina hosting TCU.
- 37:01I don't know. I mean, you know TCU, I mean, if
- 37:04you're sunny dykes, you're like, hey, why do I get these big high
- 37:07profile openers? You had Dion the first time and
- 37:10in his first game and now you get Bill Belichick.
- 37:11And I think with, you know, I, I think everybody wants to see,
- 37:15you know, is this North Carolina team going to be like, oh man,
- 37:19they're, they're coming out playing like the, the Patriots
- 37:21of yore with Tom and having success.
- 37:24Or is this going to be, hey, that, that they've been one of
- 37:26the more underachieving programs in, in well, history, Frank,
- 37:30frankly, North Carolina. So, you know, are they going to
- 37:33be able to get over that or not? I, I'm really interested to see
- 37:35how that plays out. And, you know, I expect TCU to
- 37:39be one of the better teams in the Big 12.
- 37:40So, you know, really good game that to end this the weekend on
- 37:45and especially because we just there's a lot of question marks
- 37:48in North Carolina and I don't know if they'll all be answered,
- 37:50but I think some of them will be.
- 37:51No doubt you are you in the press box at Jack Trice on
- 37:54Saturday. I am.
- 37:56I will be there and I've already written some stuff that will
- 37:59appear middle of the week and also doing some Kansas, Missouri
- 38:03writing. As well, because it's a good
- 38:05game. Absolutely, Kansas.
- 38:07Looks good back. Yeah, I'm with you, Doc.
- 38:09Great stuff. Thank you for doing this.
- 38:11Appreciate it as always. We'll reach out to you for next
- 38:13Monday. Thank you, Scott.
- 38:14All right. Thanks so much.
- 38:15Yeah, good to talk to Scott Dockerman from The Athletic as
- 38:18we check in on college football. And it didn't sugarcoat when it
- 38:21comes to Gronowski. No.
- 38:22How can you? There's nothing.
- 38:24You lose all credibility if you try.
- 38:27It's quarter before 1. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 38:29with you. Thanks for being with us on your
- 38:31Labor Day. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 38:32Network. Hi, Miller.
- 38:45Condon final couple of minutes, hour number one, Bama, Bob,
- 38:48Trent and I on college football. To kick off the second hour,
- 38:51Bill Seals covers Iowa State, 1:30 for Bill cyclonereport.com.
- 38:56Week 1 high school football also in the books now that by the
- 38:59looks of the scoreboard, you had a dinner on Friday night.
- 39:02Valley and Dowling. Those two teams seldom
- 39:05disappoint. close game? Was it as close as a scoreboard
- 39:09or what'd you take away? Yeah, absolutely, Roberts, the
- 39:12transfer from Ames that's committed die with State, the
- 39:15wide receiver for Darling. Yeah, he's fast.
- 39:18He's super fast. He had an 80 yard touchdown in
- 39:21the game. He was tremendous.
- 39:23Valley played a little bit most of the second-half without their
- 39:25quarterback, Drake Degroote, who is a featured BearCat of
- 39:28Northwest Missouri State. Really good athlete, good
- 39:31quarterback. How tall?
- 39:33Probably 6-1. Is there a?
- 39:34Chance he might is that somebody might come calling.
- 39:37I don't know, you know, in terms of arm strength that that's such
- 39:40a difficult thing to see in terms of athleticism.
- 39:42Moving his feet. They had a 3rd 19 from the 22 in
- 39:46the third quarter. He scrambled for a touchdown on
- 39:483rd 19 for a touchdown. He is a tremendous athlete
- 39:52through it. Pretty well.
- 39:53They survived but it's 29/20/17 late Valley took a safety inside
- 39:58a 2 minutes left. They were backed up at their own
- 39:592 yard line and then the defense made the plays down this
- 40:02stretch, but there was an odd 1 so.
- 40:05They're trying to attempt a field goal.
- 40:07No, it didn't even get to that point but looked like they're
- 40:10going to be very close to running out the clock.
- 40:12A flag came and I was like well is my timeout called because the
- 40:15clock stopped apparently I heard afterwards the penalty was for a
- 40:19kid. Didn't have his mouth guard in
- 40:21and so allowed Dowling to get the ball back.
- 40:23Weren't able to do anything with it, but we saw a.
- 40:25Penalty last night when the guy lost his hat and continued on in
- 40:28the play. And what's the kid doing?
- 40:30We're going to see Valley Dowling again at the I hope so
- 40:32too. I don't think it's going to be a
- 40:33big stretch that both those teams and maybe we've seen in
- 40:36the semifinals a couple of times.
- 40:38I'll see maybe for all the marbles, but SE folks going to
- 40:40have something to say with that. Plenty of other teams as well,
- 40:44but a good one to kick off the season.
- 40:46Pam and on the chains I. Didn't even.
- 40:49Oh, come. On it's on the other side of the
- 40:50field, my binoculars. I got to look at the players.
- 40:54I completely forgot about that. The chain crew, Yes.
- 40:56The chain gang, Yeah. I forgot about that, I'll have
- 40:59to take a peek next time I'm out there at Valley.
- 41:01I got to go see him this week. So awesome.
- 41:03We will be back in our number two more college football to get
- 41:06to Bama. Trenton High will do what we do
- 41:08every Monday. We recap the weekend, overreact
- 41:12and then Bill Seals on Iowa State, their media
- 41:16opportunities. They start tomorrow, but we'll
- 41:18get Bill and pick his brain on what he saw, just a dominating,
- 41:21dominating performance over South Dakota.
- 41:24Our 2 is next. Miller and Cotton, I'm glad
- 41:25you'll be able to let you with us here on a Labor Day.
- 41:28It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
