- 0:16Speaker 2: Now, there are warnings young women are being left behind
- 0:19Speaker 2: in the property market. According to Totality's latest data, while
- 0:22Speaker 2: sixty six percent of millennial men own the home that
- 0:25Speaker 2: they live in, only thirty seven percent of millennial women do.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Calvin Davidson's Totalities are chief economists and with us now, Hi, Calvin,
- 0:35Speaker 2: is this as simple as women earn less, therefore they
- 0:39Speaker 2: are less able to buy a property.
- 0:41Speaker 3: That's definitely part of it. So we know there's a
- 0:43Speaker 3: gender wage care that our survey also talks about the
- 0:46Speaker 3: proportion of females earning SA one hundred thousand dollars as
- 0:49Speaker 3: an arbitrary figure. That proportion is lower than for males.
- 0:54Speaker 3: And also there aren't some non monetary factors too, so
- 0:57Speaker 3: it's not just a monetary thing. There's also I'm not
- 1:01Speaker 3: sure education is the right word here, but a knowledge
- 1:04Speaker 3: piece of information piece that there's sixteen percent of females
- 1:07Speaker 3: who don't I a property said they don't own it
- 1:10Speaker 3: because they simply don't know how to start, as opposed
- 1:13Speaker 3: to six percent of males so yeah, there seems to
- 1:16Speaker 3: be a financial challenge here, but also perhaps an information
- 1:18Speaker 3: will get to.
- 1:19Speaker 4: How do we explain that we're going through the same
- 1:22Speaker 4: education system.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not too sure. I mean, I went through
- 1:26Speaker 3: school a little while ago, to be fear so I'm
- 1:28Speaker 3: not totally sure what's taught at school now. But you
- 1:30Speaker 3: do hear a lot about financial education perhaps missing from
- 1:34Speaker 3: the curriculum, which, as you say, is going to be
- 1:35Speaker 3: a male and female issue. But you know, a good
- 1:38Speaker 3: start would seem to be getting some of these things
- 1:41Speaker 3: into schools, just how to budget, how to run them,
- 1:44Speaker 3: all these sorts of things, perhaps in this case how
- 1:46Speaker 3: to buy a property, and there are guides out there,
- 1:48Speaker 3: but it's I guess the case of going and looks
- 1:50Speaker 3: for them.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Now, how legit is this data, because what your data
- 1:55Speaker 4: seees is that among men under the age of thirty,
- 1:58Speaker 4: half of them own their houses, the houses that they're
- 2:00Speaker 4: live in, and I call bs on that.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yeah, there's going to be potentially in the different cohorts,
- 2:07Speaker 3: potentially some sampling issues I suppose you mightn't want to
- 2:10Speaker 3: look at as the relativity is here with this is
- 2:13Speaker 3: a report aimed at a male versus female type of
- 2:17Speaker 3: thing and trying to identify those gaps in myle ownership
- 2:21Speaker 3: and sometimes that information. So yeah, you can. I mean,
- 2:24Speaker 3: there's always a way to question stats. I think I
- 2:27Speaker 3: just point to the relativities here. We know that female
- 2:30Speaker 3: ownership is lower at those those younger ages and also
- 2:34Speaker 3: those lower incomes, so those are things to work on,
- 2:37Speaker 3: I guess. Yeah.
- 2:38Speaker 4: All right, Hey, Calvin, appreciate your time.
