- 0:01Speaker 1: We'll be right back.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Happy Thursday, everybody.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Happy to be with you once again.
- 0:45Speaker 3: We march towards a weekend full of interesting matchups for
- 0:49Speaker 3: top 10 teams in the state of Utah. Interesting matchups
- 0:53Speaker 3: around the world of college football and in the NFL.
- 0:57Speaker 4: We'll talk a little Utah jazz who came up.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Just short against the San Antonio Spurs last night.
- 1:06Speaker 4: We'll talk a.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Little WNBA as currently right now, this game that we've
- 1:11Speaker 3: been talking about for a couple of weeks, I guess
- 1:14Speaker 3: a week, the Atlanta dream and the golden state Valkyries
- 1:19Speaker 3: NBA finals game.
- 1:20Speaker 4: The Valkyries lead the series three to two.
- 1:24Speaker 3: If they're able to win today, they will have to,
- 1:27Speaker 3: Celebrate on another court because of the Hawks game tonight.
- 1:32Speaker 3: But right now in the first quarter, it's 32-13 in
- 1:37Speaker 3: favor of Angel Reese's Atlanta Dream. So maybe this worry
- 1:41Speaker 3: and fuss was about nothing in the WNBA finals. We'll
- 1:47Speaker 3: keep you updated on that game as the show progresses.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Eric Weddle on the show today. Edition with Dev, Devin Dampier,
- 1:54Speaker 3: QB number one. Also on the show today. Some interesting
- 2:00Speaker 3: things coming out in the world of college football. Coming
- 2:05Speaker 3: out in the Big 12 specifically. The Pat McAfee update
- 2:09Speaker 3: that nobody wanted is out. And wow, when you talk
- 2:14Speaker 3: about doubling down, good job, Pat.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Congratulations on your new best-selling book, Pat McAfee.
- 2:19Speaker 4: My goodness.
- 2:20Speaker 5: I read all of it because we're in the business
- 2:23Speaker 5: and it's relevant to us.
- 2:25Speaker 3: We got to know what he said. But you wanted
- 2:27Speaker 3: to TLDR. You wanted to Too Long, Didn't Read.
- 2:30Speaker 5: I wanted to do the meme, the screenshot of the
- 2:36Speaker 5: text message meme that a bunch of other people did
- 2:40Speaker 5: in the comments and quote-tweeted. that's, I'm not reading all that.
- 2:45Speaker 4: There's, there's the one that I love. That's sorry. Sorry
- 2:48Speaker 4: about that. Or congratulations. Whatever, whatever applies to grants are
- 2:52Speaker 4: sorry about that is my favorite one.
- 2:54Speaker 3: It was like, I, one of those things, but what will,
- 2:57Speaker 3: we're not going to start the show with that.
- 2:58Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:59Speaker 3: It's not important enough. We, we have a champion in
- 3:02Speaker 3: major league baseball. We do for the first time ever,
- 3:06Speaker 3: the Milwaukee brewers brew crew, the brew crew, our world series,
- 3:11Speaker 3: major league baseball. Congratulations to everyone in Milwaukee and the
- 3:16Speaker 3: surrounding areas of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Or Tampa Bay brewers. My goodness. How many brewers fans
- 3:23Speaker 5: were at Tropicana field the last two games? Like they
- 3:26Speaker 5: are less three games. I guess they, it sounded like
- 3:28Speaker 5: a home game and Tropicana field. And frankly, the race
- 3:31Speaker 5: should be embarrassed by that. in a world series game,
- 3:34Speaker 5: you know, Ray's fans should be embarrassed by that.
- 3:36Speaker 3: We did a, uh, we did a, a PFL event
- 3:39Speaker 3: in Tampa just a couple of months ago.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Was it at the trop?
- 3:42Speaker 7: No.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Okay.
- 3:43Speaker 3: It was, uh, where the lightning play, forget what that's called. Ah,
- 3:47Speaker 3: first trust arena or something crazy. Hockey arena.
- 3:50Speaker 4: It's hockey arena.
- 3:51Speaker 3: We, we, it was there and, you know, it was like,
- 3:54Speaker 3: and I was talking to, uh, one of the, the
- 3:57Speaker 3: local media people down there who had, who had come
- 4:00Speaker 3: to fight week. And I was just like, uh, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 3: what kind of a sports town is, is this? Because
- 4:06Speaker 3: you've got, obviously.
- 4:08Speaker 5: You've got three major sports teams, right?
- 4:10Speaker 3: And everything, but NBA, we think we're going to be
- 4:12Speaker 3: three of the big four sooner than later here in
- 4:14Speaker 3: the state of Utah. When we get a major league
- 4:17Speaker 3: baseball team, I keep saying when, cause I'm manifesting and
- 4:20Speaker 3: you should all do that with me.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Look, what kind of sports town is this?
- 4:25Speaker 3: And it kind of hemmed and hawed and said, you know,
- 4:29Speaker 3: It's like when the teams are good, people get really passionate.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Sounds like Florida.
- 4:35Speaker 3: And it's just, there's so many transplants when you're talking
- 4:39Speaker 3: about these kind of like retirement cities.
- 4:42Speaker 4: And I was like, okay, that makes sense.
- 4:45Speaker 3: So you would think when a team's in the world
- 4:48Speaker 3: series and has a chance to win at all, that
- 4:50Speaker 3: that would be when the fan base rallies and shows
- 4:53Speaker 3: up and sells out. And I'm sure there are plenty
- 4:56Speaker 3: of Midwesterners and plenty of Wisconsinites that that have transplanted
- 5:00Speaker 3: to St. Pete and Clearwater and Tampa, but not enough,
- 5:04Speaker 3: not that it should have been the way it was.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I mean, at least 20,000 brewer fans in the building.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I think that's a right.
- 5:10Speaker 5: I think that's like a 40, just over 40,000 seat.
- 5:14Speaker 4: If you're building, if like.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I think that the most acceptable thing, or the maximum
- 5:21Speaker 3: acceptable split, when your team is competing for a championship
- 5:25Speaker 3: to home and away fans, I think the maximum acceptable
- 5:29Speaker 3: split is like 80-20. And that's me stretching. I'm thinking
- 5:33Speaker 3: about if the Mammoth... make it to.
- 5:36Speaker 4: The finals, right?
- 5:38Speaker 3: If they make it to like the Stanley cup finals
- 5:41Speaker 3: and it's against the team that has a long standing
- 5:44Speaker 3: fan base, like you said, like the Bruins or somebody
- 5:47Speaker 3: like that wins, I don't know.
- 5:48Speaker 4: You'd be like, okay, you know what?
- 5:49Speaker 3: 80, 20, like I get it because we're new and
- 5:52Speaker 3: they've been around forever. And there's been a lot of
- 5:54Speaker 3: people that have moved from the East coast to salt
- 5:56Speaker 3: lake city.
- 5:57Speaker 5: A lot of people that maybe just doesn't make sense
- 6:01Speaker 5: before the mammoth that live here.
- 6:02Speaker 3: It just doesn't make sense that a team that's out
- 6:06Speaker 3: there battling it out to the end for a World
- 6:10Speaker 3: Series championship could potentially have to look up in the
- 6:15Speaker 3: stands of their own home field and be like.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Where are our fans? Where are our people?
- 6:21Speaker 3: You don't want to hear when you strike out a
- 6:24Speaker 3: pop from your home crowd.
- 6:26Speaker 4: That's crazy business. But I do get a little bit.
- 6:33Speaker 3: I'm breaking my own rule here because one of the
- 6:35Speaker 3: things that has really bothered me about the run-up to
- 6:39Speaker 3: this holy war that's happening next week is the fan
- 6:42Speaker 3: base is trying to flex on the fan bases. Like,
- 6:46Speaker 3: our stadium is louder and more exciting than yours. Our
- 6:50Speaker 3: atmosphere is cool. Our third, between third and fourth quarter
- 6:53Speaker 3: production beats yours.
- 6:55Speaker 4: It's like, who gives a bleep?
- 6:57Speaker 5: Our game day experiences are way more expensive than yours.
- 7:00Speaker 4: How about that? Guess what? College game day had the
- 7:03Speaker 4: highest ratings ever. It's like, shut up.
- 7:06Speaker 5: You don't have to pay for Swoop to come say
- 7:08Speaker 5: hi to you, do you?
- 7:10Speaker 4: That COVID did this to us. COVID did it where.
- 7:14Speaker 3: The realignment was happening, and we just were like, what
- 7:17Speaker 3: do we talk about in sports? Let's talk about market size.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Let's talk about television ratings. Let's talk about which teams
- 7:24Speaker 3: are the most watched. Let's talk about revenue for these sports.
- 7:29Speaker 3: It drives me nuts that we get down to that
- 7:33Speaker 3: level of nitty-gritty and the fact that fan bases are
- 7:36Speaker 3: just like, oh, look, you guys didn't have as many people.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Pat McAfee likes us. He doesn't like you.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Shut up. Here's what matters, all right? Which team is
- 7:46Speaker 3: better right now? Well, Utah's got the better record. BYU's
- 7:50Speaker 3: a really damn good football team. We find out in
- 7:53Speaker 3: a week. Anyway, I hate that we're talking fans instead
- 8:00Speaker 3: of talking the results of the Milwaukee Brewers winning a
- 8:03Speaker 3: World Series for their very first time. And look, baseball
- 8:07Speaker 3: is not a hard cap league. We told you when
- 8:11Speaker 3: this series started, that the odds for the Brewers and
- 8:14Speaker 3: the odds for the Rays both to win the Major
- 8:17Speaker 3: League Baseball Championship this year were both incredibly long odds.
- 8:21Speaker 3: It was like the 20th versus 26th or something odds,
- 8:25Speaker 3: or maybe I'm exaggerating there.
- 8:27Speaker 4: But this is not a hard-cap league.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Baseball is as close a professional analogy as you're going
- 8:34Speaker 3: to get to college football and a lot of college
- 8:37Speaker 3: sports right now because in baseball, you can buy... your business,
- 8:42Speaker 3: you can buy your wins. You can spend your way
- 8:46Speaker 3: into having a loaded bullpen. You can spend your way
- 8:48Speaker 3: into having a loaded roster. You can spend your way
- 8:51Speaker 3: into having, you know, a Jacob Mizorowski, the Miz, the
- 8:57Speaker 3: Miz went what? Five and a five and a third
- 9:00Speaker 3: last night. And then had a kind of a weird
- 9:02Speaker 3: tweak of the leg and they had to pull him.
- 9:04Speaker 3: But incredible performance by the brewers and they win their
- 9:08Speaker 3: first ever championship. And they happen to have a bunch
- 9:10Speaker 3: of fans in the building, but it should be encouraging
- 9:15Speaker 3: for everyone that has not yet.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Won a championship in pro sports.
- 9:19Speaker 3: And it should also be encouraging for teams like Utah
- 9:23Speaker 3: and let's be realistic, like BYU and like some of
- 9:27Speaker 3: the other, like, you know, the TCUs of the world
- 9:30Speaker 3: that have not been traditional mega powers because they It's
- 9:35Speaker 3: easy right now in college football, especially to look at
- 9:40Speaker 3: the landscape and say, there is no way you can
- 9:43Speaker 3: climb out of a hole. If you get yourself into
- 9:45Speaker 3: a hole, the only way actually is that you have
- 9:48Speaker 3: to spend and buy. And my school is not capable
- 9:52Speaker 3: of that. My team's not capable of that. Well, you know, UCLA,
- 9:57Speaker 3: the whole narrative around UCLA for the last three years,
- 9:59Speaker 3: five years has been, this team is in deep crippling
- 10:04Speaker 3: debt as an athletic department. And that should be the death. No,
- 10:09Speaker 3: that should be like the, you can't survive it, but
- 10:12Speaker 3: guess what? They're undefeated right now. And I don't know
- 10:14Speaker 3: if they're going to make the college football playoff. But
- 10:17Speaker 3: there's a positive vibe, right? This might be the Brewers.
- 10:20Speaker 3: This might be foreshadowing. Like last year, Indiana climbed out
- 10:24Speaker 3: of the depths of college football record books to a
- 10:27Speaker 3: national championship. We might have a similar situation in college
- 10:32Speaker 3: football that we did in baseball where you defy some
- 10:34Speaker 3: of the expectations.
- 10:36Speaker 4: You overplay your spending and you end up winning it all.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Wouldn't that be nice, Utes? Wouldn't that be nice, UCLA Bruins? Ugh,
- 10:44Speaker 3: it feels weird saying that. 877-353-0700. You can always weigh
- 10:49Speaker 3: in and get involved on the show. Scott in Sandy
- 10:52Speaker 3: wants to weigh in.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Scott, how are you?
- 10:56Speaker 9: I'm pretty good. You're talking about so many Brewers fans
- 11:00Speaker 9: showing up for the game. Well, that doesn't really surprise
- 11:04Speaker 9: me because Wisconsin is probably the best traveling team in
- 11:08Speaker 9: college football. It's in these people's blood to go support
- 11:13Speaker 9: their team.
- 11:14Speaker 4: It makes sense.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Wisconsinites, the Packers are, their Packers are always well represented.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Scott's a great point you bring up. I always appreciate feedback.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Thanks for calling in Wisconsinites. And it sounds like Scott
- 11:27Speaker 3: maybe has some Midwestern roots.
- 11:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 5: Maybe, maybe he's from, or he's got family in Wisconsin.
- 11:32Speaker 5: He's got to be an authority on that.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Text in at 877-353-0700. If he's already hung up, right?
- 11:37Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 4: We already have 877-353-0700. It sounds like maybe you're from Wisconsin.
- 11:45Speaker 3: My parents are both from Iowa, and they're from eastern Iowa.
- 11:50Speaker 3: You can drive for 12 minutes and you're in Wisconsin
- 11:55Speaker 3: from their hometown.
- 11:56Speaker 5: Right across Minnesota to Wisconsin there.
- 12:00Speaker 3: There's a distinct upper Midwestern accent, especially when you're saying
- 12:08Speaker 3: the names of the states themselves.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Like, you want to know if someone's from Minnesota?
- 12:14Speaker 3: Just go ask 100 people to say the word Minnesota,
- 12:18Speaker 3: and you'll be able to find the Minnesotans. A little lineup,
- 12:21Speaker 3: police lineup. Same thing with Wisconsin. Same thing with Iowa.
- 12:27Speaker 5: And it's not Wisconsin. It's Wisconsin, right? There's like a Wisconsin.
- 12:35Speaker 5: They draw out the middle syllable, the middle vowel.
- 12:39Speaker 4: It's very....
- 12:41Speaker 5: And the O, it's up there by Canada, right? And
- 12:45Speaker 5: Canadians do the elongated O thing, too.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I think that that....
- 12:50Speaker 3: I think Canada stole it from us, not the other
- 12:52Speaker 3: way around. Yeah, there we go. Let's spin it that way.
- 12:54Speaker 5: Canada made our cool Upper Midwest thing theirs. But the long...
- 12:59Speaker 5: Let's goal, you know? Wow. Yeah. Upper Midwest has that
- 13:05Speaker 5: Canadian O.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Thing to it, too. Oh, my gosh.
- 13:09Speaker 10: I love.
- 13:10Speaker 3: I, my aunts and uncles all have a little bit
- 13:12Speaker 3: of that. My mom, my mom occasionally slides back into it,
- 13:16Speaker 3: even though she, when she's around them, she, she hasn't,
- 13:20Speaker 3: she has not lived in the Midwest since 1992, but
- 13:23Speaker 3: you know, Salt Lake city and Tulsa have not altered
- 13:28Speaker 3: her accent too much.
- 13:30Speaker 4: So, okay.
- 13:31Speaker 3: The Brewers winning their first ever world series. James, do
- 13:36Speaker 3: you know off the top of your head how many
- 13:37Speaker 3: professional franchises in Major League Baseball have not won a
- 13:43Speaker 3: World Series now that the Brewers took it down?
- 13:45Speaker 4: Yeah, now it's four, right? Now it's four.
- 13:47Speaker 5: The Rays, the Rockies, the Padres, the Mariners. There's only
- 13:51Speaker 5: one of those that have never been to a World Series.
- 13:53Speaker 5: I think we all know that after their playoff run
- 13:56Speaker 5: came up short. And we know in the building because
- 13:58Speaker 5: we've got a super fan in the building.
- 14:00Speaker 4: You know this, right? The Mariners. The Mariners.
- 14:03Speaker 6: Okay.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Of the bit of the NFL, NBA, NHL, which of
- 14:13Speaker 3: those leagues has the highest number of teams that have
- 14:17Speaker 3: never won their championship?
- 14:18Speaker 5: I think it's the NFL with 12, right?
- 14:20Speaker 4: The NFL, the.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Bills, the Vikings, the Bengals, the Falcons, the chargers, the Jags,
- 14:26Speaker 3: the Falcons, the Titans, the Browns, the lions, the Texans,
- 14:30Speaker 3: the Cardinals have never won a super bowl.
- 14:32Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 14:33Speaker 5: And NBA, I think is 10. So can you name
- 14:36Speaker 5: the teams? I think I can. I'd have to go
- 14:42Speaker 5: through them.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Jazz, of course.
- 14:46Speaker 5: The T-Wolves, the Grizzlies, the Pelicans, the Hornets. Hornets haven't
- 14:53Speaker 5: even been to a conference finals, by the way. Yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 5: that's a sad franchise at this point.
- 15:00Speaker 4: The Nets. I.
- 15:05Speaker 5: I do know them all. This is, this is rough
- 15:07Speaker 5: on the spot though.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Well, of course, I mean, I'm putting you on the
- 15:09Speaker 4: spot and you're actually, is that six so far? I
- 15:12Speaker 4: think you named seven if I'm not mistaken.
- 15:15Speaker 3: So anyway, there's three more. I, what was in the
- 15:18Speaker 3: finals last year? The, uh, like, Oh, the Pacers, the
- 15:24Speaker 3: Pacers a year before.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Year before this one.
- 15:27Speaker 8: Okay.
- 15:27Speaker 5: I'm like the Nixon Spurs at both one. Um, yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 5: the Pacers, uh, And let's see.
- 15:35Speaker 3: It's sons, jazz, magic, sons, and magic are the last
- 15:38Speaker 3: two sons, jazz, magic nets, Pacers, Clippers, T-wolves, Pelicans, Hornets, Grizzlies.
- 15:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 5: So in the NHL, the, I do not know the
- 15:49Speaker 5: teams in the NHL. I don't know the number either. It's,
- 15:51Speaker 5: it's around 10, right?
- 15:53Speaker 8: Okay.
- 15:53Speaker 4: It's also 10.
- 15:54Speaker 3: It's the mammoth, the Kraken, the Canucks, the Sabres, the jets,
- 16:00Speaker 3: the sharks, the senators, the wild, the blue jackets, the
- 16:03Speaker 3: And the Predators.
- 16:05Speaker 4: So let's go in the NBA world.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 16:09Speaker 5: Can I just say something real quick? NFL gets a
- 16:14Speaker 5: huge reputation of parody. And there's reason for that. Teams
- 16:17Speaker 5: go from first place to a Super Bowl championship or
- 16:21Speaker 5: last place to a Super Bowl appearance or championship, whatever,
- 16:24Speaker 5: all the time. Or playoff appearance. Happens all the time.
- 16:28Speaker 7: But.
- 16:28Speaker 5: The NFL has the most teams that have never won
- 16:31Speaker 5: a Super Bowl. If you were to say that to
- 16:33Speaker 5: an average NFL fan who's been fed this, we have
- 16:36Speaker 5: the best parity in the league, they'd probably be shocked
- 16:39Speaker 5: to hear that number, right? And Major League Baseball is
- 16:43Speaker 5: the team by championships, and I would argue by in
- 16:47Speaker 5: the last 25 years, especially since the turn of the millennium,
- 16:51Speaker 5: 26 years, has had the most parity of any sport ever.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Any of the four major sports.
- 16:58Speaker 5: I mean, we just talked about only four teams have
- 17:00Speaker 5: not won a championship and only one has never been
- 17:02Speaker 5: to a, uh, the championship round. You can't say that
- 17:07Speaker 5: it's nowhere near that in any other sport with either
- 17:10Speaker 5: of those numbers.
- 17:10Speaker 3: And look, baseball has been around an incredibly long time. And, uh,
- 17:16Speaker 3: It's I don't think it's a coincidence that the Rays
- 17:19Speaker 3: and the Rockies at least are newer teams because they're
- 17:22Speaker 3: newer teams since the 90s. But even like the Marlins,
- 17:25Speaker 3: the Marlins want it, you know, so what to in
- 17:28Speaker 3: their first like 10 years of existence. Mariners like maybe
- 17:33Speaker 3: it's just because Seattle is a terrible baseball city.
- 17:37Speaker 4: It's just raining all the time. So they're never going
- 17:39Speaker 4: to get one. If you go in, if you, if
- 17:42Speaker 4: we take it to the NBA, cause it's.
- 17:44Speaker 3: NBA season, right? And it's NHL season and it's football season.
- 17:47Speaker 5: And we got one of the baseball season, just town
- 17:49Speaker 5: that haven't won a title.
- 17:50Speaker 3: The sons, the jazz, the magic, the nets, the Pacers,
- 17:56Speaker 3: the Clippers, the T wolves, the Pelicans, the Hornets and
- 18:00Speaker 3: the Grizzlies.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Okay.
- 18:02Speaker 3: So the jazz are not contenders as of yet. I mean,
- 18:07Speaker 3: They're going to turn this around. They're going to go
- 18:08Speaker 3: one in five, two of finals.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Come on. Oh, see what the sons I thought would
- 18:12Speaker 4: in recent years.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I thought when they had Kevin Durant and Booker and
- 18:16Speaker 3: stuff like I have thought, and they had their runs
- 18:19Speaker 3: in the nineties as well. When it was Charles Barkley
- 18:21Speaker 3: and Dan Marley and KJ and those guys, the sons
- 18:24Speaker 3: I thought would have another Renaissance and, and win the
- 18:28Speaker 3: finals at some point.
- 18:30Speaker 4: But I don't know. I don't think we're calling them
- 18:32Speaker 4: true contenders. Yeah.
- 18:33Speaker 5: Not nowhere close to that yet. They're in the same league. areas,
- 18:36Speaker 5: the jazz magic are getting good.
- 18:38Speaker 11: All right.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Uh, the Nets know the Pacers, I think of the
- 18:44Speaker 3: group that have not won the Pacers because of their proximity,
- 18:49Speaker 3: their adjacency, their almost ran just a couple of seasons ago.
- 18:53Speaker 3: I think we have to give respect to the Pacers
- 18:56Speaker 3: as a team that could make it happen.
- 18:58Speaker 4: The Clippers, uh, just now.
- 19:01Speaker 3: The Clippers just, uh, created a problem for themselves where
- 19:06Speaker 3: they are not going to be anywhere near a championship.
- 19:09Speaker 5: And that's my one before the Clippers do the.
- 19:12Speaker 4: T wolves holder.
- 19:13Speaker 3: The T wolves are interesting, right? You've got ant man
- 19:19Speaker 3: is injured for a while. It'll be back by the
- 19:21Speaker 3: playoffs though. If everything goes well, I think that before
- 19:24Speaker 3: the playoffs, he's, he's probably going to be out till January, whatever.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Fine.
- 19:29Speaker 3: The Pelicans know the Hornets know the Grizzlies. No, So
- 19:33Speaker 3: of the 10 teams that have never won it in
- 19:37Speaker 3: the NBA, I think two on that list are teams
- 19:41Speaker 3: that today we can say, Hey, they might actually make
- 19:44Speaker 3: a run at it. They might actually be able to
- 19:46Speaker 3: pull this off. Now you do this exercise in the NFL.
- 19:51Speaker 3: and it's a lot more interesting. The bills and the
- 19:54Speaker 3: Vikings have never won.
- 19:57Speaker 4: A Superbowl. They've never won an NFL championship.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Now, both of those franchises have been two, four and
- 20:03Speaker 3: not one, one.
- 20:04Speaker 5: And I think the Vikings lost three in a row
- 20:07Speaker 5: in the seventies, if I'm not mistaken. And the bills
- 20:09Speaker 5: famously lost four in a row in the early nineties.
- 20:13Speaker 5: Like they are very similar in that regard. I have
- 20:16Speaker 5: a great.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Uncle who was on a couple of those Vikings team
- 20:21Speaker 3: on my, my grandmother's side, my mater, my paternal grandmother's
- 20:26Speaker 3: Her maiden name was Riley and Mike Riley was this
- 20:30Speaker 3: big broad shouldered Vikings lineman.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Was this, and he wouldn't Olson. He seemed to, he.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Showed up at, he showed up at a family reunion
- 20:41Speaker 3: when I was like, I dunno, right in my football
- 20:44Speaker 3: is the most important thing in the world days. I
- 20:46Speaker 3: was probably 15, 16 years old and he was wearing
- 20:50Speaker 3: his old NFC championship ring. Oh, And I was like, oh,
- 20:56Speaker 3: I didn't even know they gave those things out. But
- 21:00Speaker 3: I was starstruck at that point. I mean, he's old
- 21:03Speaker 3: as crap at that minute, but it was awesome to see.
- 21:06Speaker 3: And I was like, oh, okay, it is possible. And
- 21:10Speaker 3: it was actually hilarious because that's like a six-foot-one-inch, 245-pound
- 21:16Speaker 3: lineman in those days. Anyway, the Bills and the Vikings
- 21:20Speaker 3: have both been 2-4, and they haven't won one. Based
- 21:24Speaker 3: on the results of this season so far, and in
- 21:27Speaker 3: the Bills' case especially, recent seasons, there's a lot of
- 21:30Speaker 3: people who say, okay, the Bills and the Vikings have
- 21:33Speaker 3: a chance to win a Super Bowl.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Particularly the Bills.
- 21:38Speaker 3: And, I mean, if it comes down to, again, a
- 21:42Speaker 3: close MVP race in the NFL, Josh Allen right now
- 21:48Speaker 3: is probably among the top three frontrunners for that.
- 21:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Um, so you've got a couple of teams that have
- 21:55Speaker 3: never won it that are potentially right there. The bills
- 22:00Speaker 3: are currently leading their division. They've never won a super bowl.
- 22:03Speaker 3: The Cleveland Browns have never won the super bowl. They
- 22:06Speaker 3: are currently leading their division.
- 22:08Speaker 5: They've got NFL championships with Jim Brown, but no super bowls.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 3: The Jacksonville Jaguars have never won a super bowl. They
- 22:15Speaker 3: are currently a top their division. The Minnesota Vikings have
- 22:20Speaker 3: never won at all. They are currently sitting atop their
- 22:23Speaker 3: respected division in the NFC North. The Carolina Panthers have
- 22:27Speaker 3: never won a Super Bowl. Guess who's sitting atop the
- 22:30Speaker 3: NFC South, although in much less impressive fashion.
- 22:33Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 4: Shout out to Devin Lloyd.
- 22:36Speaker 3: They're three and three and atop the division of the
- 22:38Speaker 3: NFC South because everyone else is floundering right now. The
- 22:42Speaker 3: Arizona Cardinals, they're dead last. But there's 12 teams that
- 22:47Speaker 3: have never won it in the NFL. And we could
- 22:50Speaker 3: say that the bills, the Vikings, maybe the Jags, the lions,
- 22:57Speaker 3: I think are still in that conversation. People want to
- 23:00Speaker 3: put the Texans in that conversation from a personnel standpoint.
- 23:04Speaker 3: I don't know if realistically we should be doing that.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Are they two and five or two and five? Yeah,
- 23:10Speaker 3: but it's a, it's not a great AFC South as
- 23:15Speaker 3: per usual. They're Owen four at home right now, but
- 23:18Speaker 3: he's some Texans. And the Texas were kind of one
- 23:21Speaker 3: of the darling picks in the preseason. The Cincinnati Bengals
- 23:25Speaker 3: have never won it. They're four and two right now.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Everyone in the AFC North has a winning record at
- 23:30Speaker 3: this moment. And they've got a healthy Joe Burrow right now.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Like they, a guy who healthy, a lot of people
- 23:35Speaker 3: put them as a top three, four quarterback in the league.
- 23:39Speaker 5: So the chargers are one of those two, right?
- 23:43Speaker 3: They are. They have no chance. the chargers stink right now.
- 23:46Speaker 3: The Falcons also have never won it. The Falcons don't listen.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Don't look particularly great. They're three and four on the season,
- 23:55Speaker 3: but you know, on some flashes, but there are typical
- 23:58Speaker 3: when you have a, when you have a healthy Michael Penix, Jr.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Things are a little bit different for them. So again,
- 24:05Speaker 3: we're talking about leagues now professional leagues and parody and
- 24:09Speaker 3: whether or not parody exists and whether or not championships
- 24:12Speaker 3: are attainable for, you know, a team like a program
- 24:16Speaker 3: like the university of Utah is a championship, a college
- 24:19Speaker 3: football national championship, truly attainable. Well, now that there's a
- 24:24Speaker 3: playoff system in place, it's hard to say, no, I
- 24:29Speaker 3: want there to be more of a, um, a stair
- 24:32Speaker 3: step pathway that we, we expect, uh, First day conference championship.
- 24:37Speaker 3: A Big 12 conference championship is still a big deal.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Conference championship, college football playoff inclusion. Now let's open up
- 24:44Speaker 3: the conversation to what else you can possibly achieve. In
- 24:48Speaker 3: that college football playoff, the most likely scenario is you
- 24:53Speaker 3: run up against three weeks in a row, potentially four
- 24:56Speaker 3: weeks in a row, of teams that have better facilities
- 25:00Speaker 3: than you, higher rated recruiting classes than you, significant more
- 25:05Speaker 3: NIL spending than you, and probably not better coaching than you, but.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Higher coaching salaries for sure than you.
- 25:14Speaker 3: So resources become more of that conversation, even when you
- 25:18Speaker 3: get into a spot where Tulane was or where James
- 25:23Speaker 3: Madison was or where we saw Arizona State a couple
- 25:25Speaker 3: years ago. And you saw Texas Tech last year, although
- 25:29Speaker 3: Texas Tech didn't have those same excuses. But you get
- 25:32Speaker 3: into that sort of reality where it's like, okay, let's go.
- 25:37Speaker 3: And we saw this a little bit, if we're being
- 25:40Speaker 3: honest with ourselves, when Utah won its first Pac-12 championship and.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Played against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Because Ohio State had to elevate backups to starters in
- 25:50Speaker 3: that game. The problem was that when Ohio state elevated their,
- 25:56Speaker 3: their backups to starters, they were just young four and
- 25:59Speaker 3: five star players. They were young versions of guys that
- 26:02Speaker 3: are now the best receiver in the NFL or were
- 26:07Speaker 3: at one point among the three best receivers in all
- 26:10Speaker 3: of college football, right? Like when they, when Ohio state
- 26:14Speaker 3: bumped their guys up the depth chart, it was just
- 26:18Speaker 3: the beginning of massively incredible, but predictable careers for individuals
- 26:24Speaker 3: who were Ohio state Buckeyes recruits, right? When Utah had
- 26:28Speaker 3: to go into its bag and dig down into the
- 26:30Speaker 3: depth chart. And I still think this might've been the
- 26:32Speaker 3: wrong decision. Ultimately they had to let a running back
- 26:35Speaker 3: play corner. And it was like, Oh, that's where those
- 26:40Speaker 3: differences really manifest themselves. You can't say if you make
- 26:44Speaker 3: it into the college football playoff, you don't have a
- 26:46Speaker 3: chance to win the national championship because of course you
- 26:48Speaker 3: do have a chance. Ole Miss, made it a lot
- 26:53Speaker 3: farther than we thought they would when their coach left.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:56Speaker 5: And some of their staff left too rough.
- 26:59Speaker 3: There's a lot of ways when you talk about accessibility
- 27:01Speaker 3: to championships and you talk about parody for me, those
- 27:05Speaker 3: are the same thing. Parody really means not, Hey, who
- 27:08Speaker 3: do you have to talk about? Who's good, but who
- 27:11Speaker 3: can actually win a championship in the NFL? There are
- 27:14Speaker 3: right now a half dozen teams of the dozen that
- 27:17Speaker 3: have never won it that we could see if we
- 27:21Speaker 3: really stretch our imaginations, I could see the bills and
- 27:25Speaker 3: the Vikings and maybe the Jags winning a Superbowl. I
- 27:30Speaker 3: don't think I could see the Browns win a Superbowl.
- 27:33Speaker 3: I don't think I would put the Falcons in that, uh,
- 27:36Speaker 3: the lions. I had more belief in the lions a
- 27:39Speaker 3: couple of years ago, but the lions could maybe just
- 27:43Speaker 3: maybe still got that core. And I still like their
- 27:47Speaker 3: coach quite a lot. The lions right now are four
- 27:50Speaker 3: and two. So parody in these leagues, as the brewers
- 27:56Speaker 3: in major league baseball last night, took down their first
- 27:58Speaker 3: ever world series championship in a league. That's rules. Do
- 28:02Speaker 3: not support parody. Do not support balance. Do not support
- 28:07Speaker 3: a mid major market or a small market team being
- 28:10Speaker 3: able to beat the LA Dodgers and to beat the
- 28:12Speaker 3: Yankees and to beat the red socks and to beat the, uh,
- 28:16Speaker 3: The San Francisco Giants. But the Brewers pulled it off.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Pretty incredible to see. We will approach this question with
- 28:26Speaker 3: Gordy Chiesa. I'll ask him on the list of NBA
- 28:31Speaker 3: teams that have never won a championship who he could
- 28:34Speaker 3: see winning one in the next, we'll say, five years.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Do the Jazz belong in that conversation? Gordy Chiesa joins
- 28:42Speaker 3: us next on the Sean O'Connell Show. It's ESPN 700.
- 28:45Speaker 4: And 92.1 FM. Peace out.
- 28:53Speaker 7: Let's get the latest on the Utah Jazz with former
- 28:56Speaker 7: Jazz assistant coach Gordy Chiesa. He's forgotten more about the
- 28:59Speaker 7: NBA than any of us will ever know.
- 29:02Speaker 12: Let's not get crazy.
- 29:02Speaker 7: Come for the hoops talk.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Stay for his list of the day.
- 29:06Speaker 12: A list today.
- 29:07Speaker 7: Here's OC with basketball savant Gordy Chiesa on the Sean
- 29:11Speaker 7: O'Connell Show.
- 29:16Speaker 3: A little fact check on myself here. When we talked
- 29:18Speaker 3: about the odds, preseason odds to win the Major League
- 29:22Speaker 3: Baseball World Series, the Milwaukee Brewers were 35-1, which was
- 29:29Speaker 3: 14th among all teams in Major League Baseball. The Tampa
- 29:33Speaker 3: Bay Rays were 80 to one, which was 22nd out
- 29:39Speaker 3: of 30 major league baseball teams. Those two teams squared
- 29:41Speaker 3: off for the world series. And of course the brewers
- 29:44Speaker 3: ended up winning it. We're not going to talk baseball
- 29:47Speaker 3: with Gordy Chiesa, but we are going to talk about
- 29:49Speaker 3: overachieving relative to early season or preseason expectations with Gordy Chiesa,
- 29:54Speaker 3: who's our resident NBA expert brought to you by our
- 29:57Speaker 3: friends at Aladdin industries.
- 29:58Speaker 4: And he joins us now. Gordy, how are you?
- 30:02Speaker 1: Sean, I'm doing well, thanks.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Okay, so the Brewers took down their first ever franchise
- 30:08Speaker 3: World Series title. And that is in a league where
- 30:13Speaker 3: you're not supposed to be able to do it. You're
- 30:15Speaker 3: not supposed to be able to beat the juggernaut spenders.
- 30:18Speaker 3: There's no hard salary cap to encourage league parity. The
- 30:22Speaker 3: Brewers and the Rays both defied expectations and they squared
- 30:25Speaker 3: off for a World Series. And Milwaukee takes the first
- 30:29Speaker 3: one down in franchise history. As I'm sure you're acutely aware,
- 30:33Speaker 3: there are a bunch of NBA franchises, including the Utah
- 30:37Speaker 3: jazz that have never won an NBA championship. Uh, who,
- 30:42Speaker 3: who is this year's potential Milwaukee brewers that could get
- 30:46Speaker 3: the first one in franchise history.
- 30:50Speaker 1: This year or next five years?
- 30:52Speaker 3: Well, let's start with this year and then expand it
- 30:54Speaker 3: out to the next five years.
- 30:56Speaker 13: Okay.
- 30:56Speaker 1: We're, With that said, so the Trailblazers won in 1977,
- 31:00Speaker 1: so they're out. There's only a few teams left that
- 31:03Speaker 1: never won a championship. And I would leave them then
- 31:06Speaker 1: this year for a surprise would be the Memphis Grizzlies.
- 31:10Speaker 8: Wow.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Okay.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah, crazy. Sean, think about their team. Ty Jerome, Cedric Howard,
- 31:16Speaker 1: Jalen Wells, Cam Boozer, Zach Eady, Isaiah Stewart, Scotty Pippen Jr.,
- 31:23Speaker 1: Jeremy Grant, who's vastly underrated, And so they have a
- 31:28Speaker 1: good roster, and they're healthy right now. So with that question,
- 31:31Speaker 1: I would say the Grizzlies this year. The next five years,
- 31:35Speaker 1: it could be the Grizzlies. It could be Utah Jazz.
- 31:39Speaker 1: It could be the Charlotte Hornets. All young teams have
- 31:44Speaker 1: youthful players that are drafting very wisely, and they could
- 31:48Speaker 1: develop and surprise everybody with the right chemistry and the
- 31:52Speaker 1: right additions as far as free agency and trying to
- 31:55Speaker 1: stay relatively healthy during the season.
- 31:58Speaker 3: The Pacers and the Timberwolves are also on that list
- 32:01Speaker 3: of teams that have never won an NBA championship and
- 32:03Speaker 3: both have flirted with increased success recently. Did either of
- 32:07Speaker 3: those franchises miss their window, or could they still potentially
- 32:10Speaker 3: pull it off?
- 32:12Speaker 1: They could still pull it off, certainly, yes. They could, yeah.
- 32:15Speaker 1: I was going more with Rudy Gobert, a big guy.
- 32:18Speaker 1: They've got to get a big guy in that lineup somehow.
- 32:21Speaker 1: So as great as Anthony Edwards is, and so is
- 32:23Speaker 1: Amelo Boyle and those guys, they need a big guy
- 32:26Speaker 1: as far as that. And with the Indiana Pacers, we
- 32:29Speaker 1: love Howard Burton. Again, they need more, though. Will he
- 32:33Speaker 1: do it? We'll see.
- 32:36Speaker 3: You just met that Anthony Edwards and he's, he's out
- 32:38Speaker 3: for a significant amount of time as is Jaron Jackson jr.
- 32:41Speaker 4: For the Utah jazz.
- 32:43Speaker 3: And when you're talking about Ant-Man being out for the Timberwolves,
- 32:46Speaker 3: let's say until December, maybe, maybe comes back slightly after Christmas.
- 32:51Speaker 4: What does that do to that team?
- 32:53Speaker 3: Not only in the early portion of the season and
- 32:55Speaker 3: for playoff seating well down the line, but just rounding
- 32:59Speaker 3: into form at the right time and maybe being behind
- 33:02Speaker 3: the eight ball and where everyone else is getting that
- 33:05Speaker 3: team chemistry and all that.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Stuff built up.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Again, so they're going to try to, in their world now,
- 33:12Speaker 1: is that they're going to try to hold down and
- 33:15Speaker 1: just be competitive until they get Edwards back, and then
- 33:18Speaker 1: he gives them that jump start, that unbelievable spark. He's
- 33:21Speaker 1: so ultra-talented. So the question that we'll be right now is,
- 33:24Speaker 1: can LaMelo Ball, can Jaden McDaniels, can those guys hang there?
- 33:28Speaker 1: Can Rudy Gobert give them another... rim protection as far as,
- 33:34Speaker 1: as far as playing that. And I know the sumo,
- 33:36Speaker 1: who's a very good player. Can he step in and
- 33:39Speaker 1: Edwards his part and be a starter versus a six
- 33:42Speaker 1: man and can young again, can young Terrence Shannon come
- 33:46Speaker 1: in and score points for them? So it's the unknown.
- 33:50Speaker 1: It's makes it so interesting. And that's injury is such
- 33:53Speaker 1: a factor. So the question is always is Sean, what
- 33:56Speaker 1: team can overcome relatively speaking, major injuries that still remain
- 34:00Speaker 1: competitive versus going like an eight-game losing streak where suddenly
- 34:04Speaker 1: when your star player comes back and all players, you're
- 34:07Speaker 1: so far behind, it's too late to catch up then.
- 34:10Speaker 1: That's the question as always with most of these teams,
- 34:12Speaker 1: including the Jazz right now. Jazz played last night shorthanded.
- 34:16Speaker 1: They battled unbelievable. The Spurs had a back-to-back. They got
- 34:19Speaker 1: here at 2 o'clock in the morning. objectively, they hung
- 34:23Speaker 1: in there to win the game. I call winning ugly,
- 34:25Speaker 1: but for the Spurs' point of view, for the Jazz,
- 34:27Speaker 1: it was really a tremendous effort. He just fell short
- 34:30Speaker 1: in the overtime where they couldn't make a shot, and
- 34:33Speaker 1: the Spurs' defense locked in. So suddenly, the end of
- 34:38Speaker 1: that game where the Spurs couldn't score, the Jazz held him.
- 34:41Speaker 1: It was flipped in the overtime where the Spurs defensively
- 34:47Speaker 1: put a body on everybody, hounding and pounding, and the
- 34:49Speaker 1: Jazz couldn't shoot straight and had four turnovers, and that
- 34:53Speaker 1: affected the game.
- 34:55Speaker 3: Gordy, when you see an effort like that from a
- 34:58Speaker 3: young Jazz team that is now without one of their
- 35:01Speaker 3: most important players, even in a loss, what does it
- 35:05Speaker 3: do for you on the coaching staff?
- 35:06Speaker 4: What does it do for morale?
- 35:07Speaker 3: There's no moral victories anymore for this Jazz team, but
- 35:11Speaker 3: you've got to take every day as it comes. So
- 35:13Speaker 3: what does a performance like that do for this Jazz team?
- 35:19Speaker 1: It tells them that we can play with anybody, and
- 35:21Speaker 1: they could. The Spurs that are running up world champions,
- 35:24Speaker 1: and ironically, the Jazz played the Spurs again on Monday night.
- 35:28Speaker 1: So they get a do-over on the road in San Antonio.
- 35:32Speaker 1: So with that said, it's encouraging signs. Your point is
- 35:36Speaker 1: absolutely well taken. There's no more victories in professional sports. However,
- 35:41Speaker 1: there's a trend line, and that's where the Jazz are.
- 35:45Speaker 1: As always... It's self-inflicted with a younger group. The Jazz
- 35:49Speaker 1: really are on a young team. The most talented guys
- 35:52Speaker 1: are the young guys. But overall, the Jazz are right
- 35:55Speaker 1: in the mid-tier as far as age group. So they've
- 35:59Speaker 1: got to correct that turnover problem. The Jazz had 19
- 36:02Speaker 1: turnovers at home and an overtime loss. And so the question,
- 36:09Speaker 1: as always, is was it the defense of the Spurs? Yes,
- 36:13Speaker 1: it was. Was it self-inflicted? Yes, it was. And so
- 36:17Speaker 1: there's that fine line where if you don't shoot straight
- 36:20Speaker 1: in the game, you've got to protect the ball. And unfortunately,
- 36:23Speaker 1: the Jazz have not done that. The Jazz, 19 last night,
- 36:26Speaker 1: for the first five games, Jazz averaging 7.2 miscues a game.
- 36:31Speaker 1: And that's passing turnovers, Sean, offensive fouls, and those dreaded
- 36:35Speaker 1: things called illegal screens. Sean, here's the rule about screening action.
- 36:40Speaker 1: I'm going to give you a layman's term, and for
- 36:42Speaker 1: the listeners right now, Why would a big guy want
- 36:45Speaker 1: to waste a foul setting a legal screen, we'll say,
- 36:48Speaker 1: on pick-and-roll offense? So here's the teaching point about it,
- 36:51Speaker 1: is that the screener has to get control of his body,
- 36:55Speaker 1: pop his feet to the ground. You hear the pop.
- 36:58Speaker 1: If I'm the dribbler on a pick-and-roll or if I'm
- 37:01Speaker 1: the cutter on wide-screening action, I don't accept the screen
- 37:05Speaker 1: if I don't hear the pop. No pop, I don't go.
- 37:10Speaker 1: And what that does, that increases tremendously what? better timing,
- 37:14Speaker 1: and less what? Offensive fouls. So, Sean, you're the king
- 37:18Speaker 1: of pop.
- 37:20Speaker 3: I don't know if anyone's ever called me that. I'll
- 37:22Speaker 3: take it, Gordy. Gordy Chase is our guest here.
- 37:24Speaker 1: You're setting screens. You and James Peterson, and, you know, again,
- 37:28Speaker 1: James Peterson's team, in case you're wondering, forget about the
- 37:31Speaker 1: Jazz and the Spurs. The James team won it the
- 37:35Speaker 1: other day. They were down 17 and won the game.
- 37:39Speaker 3: All because of James' strong efforts and a comeback. This
- 37:41Speaker 3: is Gordy Chiesa talking a little NBA basketball. One of
- 37:46Speaker 3: Weber State's finest, Dame Lillard. He's well-respected and loved around
- 37:51Speaker 3: the NBA, I think even more so here in Utah
- 37:54Speaker 3: than in other places. And the Portland Trailblazers are off
- 37:57Speaker 3: to a hot start. How sustainable is it?
- 38:01Speaker 1: Very much, yes. The Trailblazers... Team building. They've done a
- 38:06Speaker 1: good job. They get Dame back on a discount price
- 38:09Speaker 1: because the Bucs are playing. The Bucs had a buyout,
- 38:12Speaker 1: and he's making a whole bunch of money from the Bucs.
- 38:14Speaker 1: So the Trailblazers, his former team, which loves him, they
- 38:19Speaker 1: brought him back, and he is playing well. Dame right now,
- 38:22Speaker 1: this is Dame's first 18th season in the NBA. It's
- 38:26Speaker 1: a long time. And that small body, age 36, and
- 38:30Speaker 1: he's averaging 21.7 points per game, and shooting 42.9 from three.
- 38:36Speaker 1: And he's really basically not even the best player in
- 38:39Speaker 1: the team. The best player in the team is Denny Adia.
- 38:43Speaker 1: who has an unbelievable all-around game. He's a star player.
- 38:48Speaker 1: He's from Israel. He can score, he can shoot, he
- 38:52Speaker 1: can drive, he can pass, and he can steal. It's
- 38:55Speaker 1: his quick numbers, which illustrates what he's done for the Trailblazers.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Averaging 22.3 points per game, 6.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.3 steals.
- 39:10Speaker 1: And add to that, Sean, from... He's an Israeli guy
- 39:14Speaker 1: that's so assertive. He led the NBA last year and
- 39:18Speaker 1: the whole season in most drives per game. Amazing. It's
- 39:22Speaker 1: not LeBron. It's not Maxie. It's not anyone else. It's
- 39:26Speaker 1: Danny Abdiah. So he drives the ball into the basket.
- 39:30Speaker 1: He puts so much stress on the defender, on his
- 39:32Speaker 1: feet and legs, to be able to stay in front
- 39:35Speaker 1: of him. Most guys can't. He makes a play for
- 39:37Speaker 1: everybody on his team. So Dame Lillard is really the
- 39:41Speaker 1: benefactor of Danny Abdiah driving, and it's really helped him.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And John Moran is who's an unbelievable, talented player, though misguided,
- 39:51Speaker 1: is now, to his credit, he's learned from his past mistakes,
- 39:55Speaker 1: been a model citizen, and that's part of the reason
- 39:57Speaker 1: why they're winning, besides the big guy, Donovan Klinger. So
- 40:00Speaker 1: the Jazz play on Halloween at 1 o'clock at the
- 40:03Speaker 1: Delta Center versus the undefeated, so far, Trailblazers. And tonight, though,
- 40:09Speaker 1: in Portland, the Grizzlies undefeated play the Trailblazers in that city,
- 40:16Speaker 1: and someone's going to lose.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Which of the teams that have performed well so far,
- 40:22Speaker 3: and we're just getting started in this NBA season, is
- 40:26Speaker 3: least believable for Gordie Chiesa? Like, whose success right now
- 40:31Speaker 3: is most fragile in your mind?
- 40:37Speaker 1: Cavaliers.
- 40:38Speaker 6: Cavaliers.
- 40:39Speaker 1: They're 3-1 right now, and I haven't brought them yet
- 40:41Speaker 1: so far into it. So I would say the Cavs
- 40:45Speaker 1: right now. and also the Lakers at 4-1. I love
- 40:50Speaker 1: Lucas and Magic, I get it, but they don't really
- 40:53Speaker 1: guard philosophically right now still, and they need more on
- 40:57Speaker 1: the defensive side of the ball. And that's why it's
- 40:59Speaker 1: so important. What you want to do in any sport
- 41:02Speaker 1: is be good on both sides. I don't mean dominate,
- 41:05Speaker 1: just be good. So say in the NFL, if you
- 41:08Speaker 1: have a good defense, which you should, It keeps you
- 41:11Speaker 1: having every single game. And if your offense is somewhat
- 41:14Speaker 1: lesser but it's still good, you have a chance to
- 41:16Speaker 1: watch score points. It's the same thing in basketball. It's
- 41:19Speaker 1: the same thing in baseball. If you move the runner
- 41:21Speaker 1: instead of hitting the home run, I always laugh all
- 41:23Speaker 1: the time. You know, Sean, I'm actually a baseball junkie.
- 41:26Speaker 14: All right?
- 41:27Speaker 1: So, you know, metrics say this awful thing. It's either
- 41:31Speaker 1: a home run or a strikeout. Really?
- 41:33Speaker 14: Really?
- 41:35Speaker 1: Watch the World Series, what happened. Everybody moved runners over
- 41:38Speaker 1: and played fundamental baseball, and the better team with fundamentals
- 41:41Speaker 1: won the championship last night. It's no different in the NFL.
- 41:45Speaker 1: It's no different in NBA basketball. If you have fundamentals
- 41:48Speaker 1: and you have an element of two-way sides of the ball,
- 41:50Speaker 1: the chances of winning are much greater and even better.
- 41:53Speaker 1: If you star players in the fourth quarter NBA game,
- 41:57Speaker 1: both guard, defend, and score, the chances of winning are
- 42:00Speaker 1: absolutely tremendous.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Gordy, kickoff times have become a major topic of discussion
- 42:05Speaker 3: this week in Utah, especially because we got a 10 a.m.
- 42:09Speaker 3: kickoff assignment for the Holy War coming up next week.
- 42:13Speaker 3: I'm watching a finals game in the WNBA where these
- 42:18Speaker 3: women had to play at 12.30 Eastern time, started at 10.30
- 42:22Speaker 3: our time, which is, of course, well off the normal schedule.
- 42:25Speaker 3: body clock schedule. These are finally tuned athletes in pro sports, especially.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Did you guys ever pay close attention to tip off times?
- 42:35Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely. We would cut back practice where if it
- 42:39Speaker 1: was an early start, we wouldn't have a walkthrough that day.
- 42:42Speaker 1: We had to walk through the day before. Yeah. We're
- 42:44Speaker 1: very conscious of it, especially in playoff games and playoff situations.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Rest is always better than practice. because the intensity is
- 42:53Speaker 1: going to be so unbelievable. So we would adjust everything
- 42:58Speaker 1: based on the time the game starts. And if you
- 43:03Speaker 1: ever walk through a day, we'll say, of a late game,
- 43:05Speaker 1: like a late start, hypothetically, that walkthrough would still be what? Very,
- 43:10Speaker 1: very brief.
- 43:13Speaker 4: What's your list today, Gordy?
- 43:15Speaker 1: My list today, Sean, is San Antonio Spurs. I know
- 43:19Speaker 1: they won last night, so the Jazz fans are not happy,
- 43:22Speaker 1: and I agree with them. But we've got to give
- 43:24Speaker 1: the Spurs the credit. They're the 10 greatest San Antonio
- 43:28Speaker 1: franchise players of all time. It's a hard list to
- 43:31Speaker 1: do because there's so many great guys that play for
- 43:33Speaker 1: the Spurs. Just quickly, the Spurs started in 1967 in
- 43:38Speaker 1: the ABA as a charter franchise. They went to the
- 43:41Speaker 1: NBA in 1976 where four NBA franchises entered the NBA,
- 43:46Speaker 1: and they were the San Antonio Spurs. New York Nets,
- 43:49Speaker 1: now Brooklyn Nets, Indiana Pacers, and Devon Nuggets. They're a
- 43:54Speaker 1: proud franchise of Spurs. They won five championships, 1999, 2003,
- 43:57Speaker 1: showing you in college, 2005, showing you in college, 2007,
- 44:05Speaker 1: when you wanted to be in college, and 2014. They
- 44:09Speaker 1: had five championships. Here we go. The 10 greatest Spurs players.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Bruce Bowen. Five-time first-team all-defensive player, number 10. Number nine,
- 44:19Speaker 1: Sean Elliott, blue teammate, two-time All-Star, NBA champion, 1999. Number eight,
- 44:25Speaker 1: nickname was the A-Train, Artis Gilmore, Hall of Fame inductee, 2011,
- 44:30Speaker 1: NBA champion. ABA All-Star, scorer, rebounder, shot blocker. Number seven,
- 44:37Speaker 1: all-time greatest spur player. His nickname is The Claw, Kawhi Leonard.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Future Hall of Famer, won championship in 2014, MVP, finals 2014.
- 44:47Speaker 1: All right, number six, he played last night, Sean, Delta Center,
- 44:52Speaker 1: Victor Wembyamba, the Frenchman. Future Hall of Famer, generational talent,
- 44:57Speaker 1: first-team All-NBA, perennial, will be perennial MVP candidate forever. He's
- 45:03Speaker 1: number six. Gordy, what are you, crazy? He's number six.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Let's go number five. Manu Ginobili, the soul of the
- 45:10Speaker 1: Spurs franchise. Ginobili was the soul of the whole franchise. Argentinian,
- 45:16Speaker 1: Hall of Famer inductee, 2022, four titles. Stand out on
- 45:22Speaker 1: both sides of the ball. The number four greatest Spurs player,
- 45:25Speaker 1: nickname was the Admiral, David Robinson, Hall of Fame 2009,
- 45:30Speaker 1: two championships, rebounded, shot blocker, incredible winner. The third greatest
- 45:36Speaker 1: Spur player, another Frenchman, Tony Parker, Hall of Fame inductee, 2023,
- 45:43Speaker 1: four NBA titles. He was best in unbelievable playoff games.
- 45:47Speaker 1: And let's not forget, he was the 28th pick of
- 45:50Speaker 1: the draft back in 2001. And that's how great he was,
- 45:55Speaker 1: and that's how people missed on him. The second greatest
- 45:58Speaker 1: ever Spur player, nickname was the Iceman. George Gervin, Hall
- 46:03Speaker 1: of Fame inductee, 1996, one of the greatest ever NBA scores.
- 46:09Speaker 1: He had the signature 10-foot finger roll where no one
- 46:13Speaker 1: could block his shot, and he was smooth as silk.
- 46:16Speaker 1: And the greatest ever Spurs player of all time is Mr. Fundamentals,
- 46:21Speaker 1: Tim Duncan, Hall of Fame inductee in 2020, five NBA titles.
- 46:27Speaker 1: He was the unbelievable foundation for all these success. and
- 46:32Speaker 1: there was nobody like him. Sean, quickly, just add to this. Sean,
- 46:35Speaker 1: did you realize that besides all these Hall of Fame players,
- 46:39Speaker 1: also the mascot of the Spurs is in the Hall
- 46:43Speaker 1: of Fame of mascots, and his nickname is Coyote, alias
- 46:49Speaker 1: Derek Dirk, was inducted in 2007. So, Sean, even the
- 46:53Speaker 1: mascots in the Hall of Fame.
- 46:55Speaker 4: I did not know that.
- 46:57Speaker 1: But let's not forget, Utah Jazz Basketball, that the bear
- 47:02Speaker 1: is in the Mascot Hall of Fame. He was inducted
- 47:05Speaker 1: in 2006. It was the late, great John Apsley who
- 47:09Speaker 1: was the bear for 25 years. Also, Sean is in
- 47:12Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame for mascots. So, Sean, you and
- 47:16Speaker 1: I are way beyond just talking about sports. We love mascots.
- 47:20Speaker 3: I got to look up every mascot that's in the
- 47:22Speaker 3: Mascot Hall of Fame now.
- 47:24Speaker 1: What about Swoop for the Utes?
- 47:26Speaker 4: I don't think Swoop is in the Mascot Hall of
- 47:28Speaker 4: Fame yet.
- 47:29Speaker 1: I know, but we've got to start talking about him.
- 47:33Speaker 3: All right, we're going to start making a swoop to
- 47:36Speaker 3: the Hall of Fame campaign, courtesy.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Of Gordy Chiesa.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Oh, I like it. Thank you.
- 47:41Speaker 4: What are you handing out for Halloween this year, Gordy?
- 47:44Speaker 1: All right, Sean. Okay, you told me. It's right in
- 47:47Speaker 1: front of me here, Sean. This is perfect. It's all organized,
- 47:51Speaker 1: not based on me, but my wife. We have Kit Kats.
- 47:54Speaker 1: We have pretzels. We have Hershey, Bars, and we have
- 47:59Speaker 1: Junior Mints.
- 48:00Speaker 4: All right. That's perfect.
- 48:01Speaker 3: So if you're in the Chiesa neighborhood, make sure you
- 48:04Speaker 3: knock on that door and trick-or-treat that you're going to get.
- 48:07Speaker 3: That's a nice selection of treats.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Sean, think about it. So many people driving around our
- 48:15Speaker 1: neighborhood that drive like in these cars and they trick-or-treat.
- 48:18Speaker 1: They're like 18, 19-year-old guys.
- 48:20Speaker 4: No, no.
- 48:21Speaker 12: Yeah, all the time.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 48:24Speaker 6: I'm not kidding, Sean.
- 48:25Speaker 1: We have the oldest people in the history of Halloween
- 48:28Speaker 1: trick-or-treating in our neighborhood that drive cars. Sean, even better
- 48:32Speaker 1: than my car, and he trick-or-treats after the door. Hey,
- 48:35Speaker 1: happy Halloween.
- 48:35Speaker 4: Yeah. You got to tell them, no treat. I'll give
- 48:39Speaker 4: you a trick. That's crazy. I love it, Gordy.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Thanks for joining us today. Happy Halloween.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Thanks, Sean.
- 48:47Speaker 4: We'll talk to you next week. Thanks, Gordy.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Thanks, Sean. Peace out.
- 48:51Speaker 4: That's incredible. My mom, by the way, shout out to
- 48:54Speaker 4: my mom.
- 48:56Speaker 3: My mom was the person that when you were like
- 48:59Speaker 3: high school age and you knocked on our door when
- 49:02Speaker 3: you were a kid trick or treating, she'd be like,
- 49:06Speaker 3: you're too old. Just would straight up be like, I
- 49:09Speaker 3: don't think so. I mean, I, and when I was
- 49:12Speaker 3: a kid, it embarrassed me so bad. Cause I was like,
- 49:16Speaker 3: Oh mom, no, they're going to think we're lame. They
- 49:19Speaker 3: didn't think I And I think anything about me.
- 49:22Speaker 10: Right.
- 49:23Speaker 3: And now that I'm an old curmudgeon myself, I'm like, yeah,
- 49:26Speaker 3: I can relate. Except I don't know if, I don't
- 49:31Speaker 3: know if I'll ever do things the same way because
- 49:34Speaker 3: we've had like older kids, teenage kids knock on our door,
- 49:37Speaker 3: trick or treating and And I'm almost just like glad
- 49:40Speaker 3: they're still being kids instead of like tick talking or something,
- 49:45Speaker 3: you know?
- 49:46Speaker 5: So I think it's different now, potentially. I, you're probably
- 49:51Speaker 5: going to, and a lot of people probably think I
- 49:52Speaker 5: was way too old when I stopped trick or treating.
- 49:54Speaker 5: I went with my friend sophomore year of high school.
- 49:56Speaker 5: That was the last time.
- 49:57Speaker 6: Okay.
- 49:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 49:58Speaker 4: I mean, I think I might've been a freshman the
- 50:01Speaker 4: last time I did it.
- 50:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 50:02Speaker 5: I mean, it seems like junior high, middle school age
- 50:04Speaker 5: is when a lot of people stop. I did it
- 50:06Speaker 5: in the high school. I, At that time, I was like,
- 50:09Speaker 5: who says you're too old to trick or treat?
- 50:11Speaker 4: And then I stopped after that.
- 50:12Speaker 3: So I think my mom would have been like, especially
- 50:14Speaker 3: because you're a big guy. So you would have showed
- 50:17Speaker 3: up like towering over her. She'd be like, no, you're
- 50:20Speaker 3: not getting candy. Shout out to my mom.
- 50:24Speaker 4: It's amazing. But now, though.
- 50:26Speaker 3: Times are different and kids are growing up too fast
- 50:29Speaker 3: and they're getting away from these childhood traditions too fast.
- 50:32Speaker 3: And they're in their phones and their electronics all the time.
- 50:34Speaker 3: So I think now you adorable little thing. Here's some candy.
- 50:38Speaker 3: That's how you feel. I think now I'm just like,
- 50:40Speaker 3: go park that car and walk up the street. I
- 50:42Speaker 3: will give you some trick or treat candy, sir. I'm
- 50:46Speaker 3: 18 years old. I don't care. Get off that phone
- 50:49Speaker 3: and come over here. I think that's where I'm at now.
- 50:51Speaker 3: So come here, cutie. The pendulum has swung the wrong way.
- 50:56Speaker 4: All right.
- 50:56Speaker 3: We had a couple elite text messages come in, and
- 51:01Speaker 3: we'll have a very short segment next in the hot
- 51:03Speaker 3: lunch where I want to make sure we give a
- 51:05Speaker 3: little love to our texters. Then it'll be Eric Weddle.
- 51:09Speaker 3: We got Dish with Dev still coming today. It's the
- 51:12Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 51:29Speaker 7: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 51:32Speaker 7: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 51:43Speaker 3: All right, if you go back to the beginning of
- 51:45Speaker 3: the show, we were talking about how many Brewers fans
- 51:49Speaker 3: were in attendance for the Brewers to seal their first
- 51:53Speaker 3: ever World Series victory on the road in Tampa. And
- 51:58Speaker 3: that sucks for Tampa, but this was great from Sam.
- 52:01Speaker 3: He said, I have a buddy who grew up in
- 52:03Speaker 3: Green Bay. We had a caller who said, look, Wisconsinites travel.
- 52:06Speaker 3: They always do. Sam texted in to support that point.
- 52:10Speaker 3: I have a buddy who grew up in Green Bay.
- 52:12Speaker 3: He flew from Salt Lake to Portland, then to Tampa
- 52:15Speaker 3: on a Frontier Airlines flight to be there for game four. Unfortunately,
- 52:19Speaker 3: because of the circumstances you speak of, going to Milwaukee
- 52:22Speaker 3: was cost prohibitive. If you have parents from Iowa, you
- 52:25Speaker 3: understand Midwesterners love nothing more than, one, being most stubbornly
- 52:28Speaker 3: loyal people you'll ever come across.
- 52:30Speaker 4: Accurate. Two, acquiring things at a discount or on sale.
- 52:34Speaker 3: That is also true. I was raised with Midwestern sensibilities.
- 52:41Speaker 7: Okay?
- 52:41Speaker 4: I love nothing more than saving money.
- 52:44Speaker 11: If you.
- 52:46Speaker 3: I'm, I'm enough of a sucker about it that if
- 52:48Speaker 3: you say it's discounted, like you slap a sale sticker
- 52:52Speaker 3: on something and you just, the number is actually the
- 52:55Speaker 3: regular retail price.
- 52:56Speaker 4: I'm probably still going to buy it.
- 52:58Speaker 5: So you, I'm surprised you're not like anti giving out
- 53:03Speaker 5: candy on trick or treating. Cause you're like, I can't
- 53:05Speaker 5: give away this food. I can't give away these treats.
- 53:08Speaker 5: I spent money on these. You know why I'm willing
- 53:10Speaker 5: to do it? Cause I know they won't waste it.
- 53:12Speaker 4: Oh, there you go.
- 53:14Speaker 3: If you give kids, like, food, they'll waste the food.
- 53:16Speaker 5: Yeah, but candy?
- 53:18Speaker 4: You give kids candy? Cake. I remember being a kid.
- 53:22Speaker 3: I would have a pillowcase full of candy, and I
- 53:25Speaker 3: would still be eating that Halloween candy September of the
- 53:29Speaker 3: following year.
- 53:30Speaker 5: You should, just for, especially we're talking about the high
- 53:33Speaker 5: school kids that might still be trick-or-treating, instead of sending
- 53:36Speaker 5: them away, you should look them in the eye and
- 53:37Speaker 5: be like, you going to eat this candy?
- 53:39Speaker 4: Don't waste this. Don't you dare waste this. I will
- 53:44Speaker 4: say this.
- 53:45Speaker 3: My, my father-in-law this past weekend was inducted into the
- 53:49Speaker 3: candy hall of fame in Florida.
- 53:52Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Because he's was involved in candy for his entire career.
- 53:57Speaker 3: He was inducted into the candy hall of fame and
- 53:59Speaker 3: the gift bag that they sent back, like the swag bag,
- 54:04Speaker 3: every candy company that was there dropped something. So my
- 54:08Speaker 3: wife came back with like an extra carry on bag,
- 54:11Speaker 3: full of candy from all of these companies.
- 54:14Speaker 4: Amazing.
- 54:15Speaker 3: If you come to my house, you might be getting
- 54:17Speaker 3: candy that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world.
- 54:20Speaker 5: You have to send me your address or you have
- 54:22Speaker 5: to take the take. I'm going to have to air quotes.
- 54:25Speaker 5: Take my boy trick or treating to your house.
- 54:29Speaker 4: You honestly just bring him over.
- 54:30Speaker 3: I'll dump out the bag and he could just crawl
- 54:33Speaker 3: around and eat whatever he wants.
- 54:34Speaker 4: There we go. All right, we've got to take another break.
- 54:37Speaker 3: Eric Weddle is going to join us to talk big
- 54:39Speaker 3: win over Houston, how you avoid the potential pitfalls of
- 54:43Speaker 3: a road game at Cincinnati, and much more. The Utah
- 54:46Speaker 3: football legend Eric Weddle next on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 54:49Speaker 3: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. You're listening to the.
- 54:56Speaker 7: Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN
- 55:00Speaker 7: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Noon on a Thursday means we're talking football with the
- 55:11Speaker 2: Utah legend, the NFL veteran, the Super Bowl champion, the
- 55:15Speaker 2: head coach of the Rancho Bernardo Broncos, my friend, your friend,
- 55:20Speaker 2: Eric Weddle.
- 55:21Speaker 4: Welcome to the show. How are you, sir?
- 55:24Speaker 8: Doing good, my friend.
- 55:25Speaker 10: Doing good.
- 55:26Speaker 8: Another week, another chance to be great, especially for our youth,
- 55:31Speaker 8: and a great opportunity to Beat our rival for the
- 55:35Speaker 8: Broncos for sole possession of league champions. We haven't done
- 55:41Speaker 8: it in 10 years, so a lot to be excited about.
- 55:44Speaker 4: You got one more regular season game before the playoffs start.
- 55:48Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 55:49Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 55:50Speaker 10: Yes, sir.
- 55:52Speaker 4: Against Poway? Ugh, Poway. No thanks.
- 55:57Speaker 8: No thanks.
- 55:58Speaker 10: You know, we got.
- 56:00Speaker 8: We unfortunately dropped a tough one last week against the
- 56:03Speaker 8: mighty Grizzlies of Mission Hills, home of Chris Alave and
- 56:08Speaker 8: Fred Warner.
- 56:10Speaker 10: And, you know, really proud of the boys.
- 56:13Speaker 8: We got down early, didn't start very well, 21-0. On Madden,
- 56:18Speaker 8: you would have to give up the sticks at that point.
- 56:21Speaker 8: But we fought back slowly but surely, got it to
- 56:25Speaker 8: 28-21 in.
- 56:26Speaker 10: The fourth quarter.
- 56:27Speaker 8: It was about six minutes to go and We didn't
- 56:31Speaker 8: get the ball back after that. And we're really proud.
- 56:34Speaker 10: Of our bunch.
- 56:34Speaker 8: You know, in the past, we probably would have got
- 56:36Speaker 8: blown out by 50 and showing the development and the
- 56:41Speaker 8: belief that we can play with the big boys. And
- 56:44Speaker 8: when you look at the game, man, a couple plays
- 56:46Speaker 8: go our way or maybe our players do a little
- 56:49Speaker 8: bit better in certain situations, we can pull that game out.
- 56:52Speaker 8: So should have some confidence leading into playoffs in a
- 56:55Speaker 8: couple weeks.
- 56:57Speaker 3: The ability to play well or to continue to strive
- 57:01Speaker 3: at least to play well when you're down big is,
- 57:04Speaker 3: I mean, it's something that we expect from professionals and
- 57:07Speaker 3: we expect it from college players, especially at the level
- 57:11Speaker 3: where Utah's at right now. It's against human nature. It's
- 57:14Speaker 3: a hard thing to coach, I imagine. And you're instilling
- 57:17Speaker 3: that with these high school boys now. But it's something
- 57:19Speaker 3: that mattered to you, right, for your entire football career.
- 57:23Speaker 4: If you can, articulate for.
- 57:25Speaker 3: Me just how difficult it is to go out, play hard, execute,
- 57:29Speaker 3: be who you're supposed to be when you're looking at
- 57:31Speaker 3: the scoreboard and you're like, good hell, this is a
- 57:33Speaker 3: bad night for us.
- 57:35Speaker 15: Yeah, man, it's really like as much as a coach
- 57:41Speaker 15: can try to express, right, like I believe in you,
- 57:46Speaker 15: keep fighting, keep battling, like, especially for young kids and especially, like,
- 57:52Speaker 15: at the high school level.
- 57:53Speaker 8: Like, Mission Hills is kind of like a premier program
- 57:56Speaker 8: down here. It would kind of be like, you know,
- 57:58Speaker 8: like Corner Canyon over the years or, you know, like
- 58:01Speaker 8: Mountain Ridge.
- 58:02Speaker 10: Like, those schools that are, like, really top-notch.
- 58:05Speaker 8: And you have, like, a low 6A team or 5A,
- 58:10Speaker 8: and you.
- 58:10Speaker 15: Get into this game and you're like, gosh, I don't know.
- 58:13Speaker 10: Like, they're so good.
- 58:15Speaker 8: And then it's like the team's waiting for a spark.
- 58:18Speaker 8: And for us, like– everyone kind of, like, waits around
- 58:21Speaker 8: for Gage to kind of, like, make something happen, whether
- 58:25Speaker 8: it's on.
- 58:25Speaker 10: Defense or offense.
- 58:26Speaker 8: And then they're like, okay, we can play now. You know, well,
- 58:30Speaker 8: why does it have to take that down 21-0 for
- 58:32Speaker 8: us to do that and have a collective unit to
- 58:35Speaker 8: believe that, hey, we can actually play with these guys,
- 58:38Speaker 8: relying on someone else, when you should just believe it yourself.
- 58:41Speaker 8: You know, and it's like a– It's a culture, it's
- 58:45Speaker 8: a vision, it's a belief, it's how you structure your
- 58:52Speaker 8: offseason and really instilling the confidence in each individual so
- 58:58Speaker 8: they're not relying on someone else to turn the tide
- 59:01Speaker 8: that they're going to turn the tide.
- 59:02Speaker 10: If that makes sense.
- 59:04Speaker 3: We saw a little bit of that from Utah in
- 59:07Speaker 3: the Houston game, and I don't think that diverges. exists
- 59:10Speaker 3: so strongly where anyone's waiting around for someone else to
- 59:13Speaker 3: make a play, but it's always great to see one
- 59:15Speaker 3: of your leaders step up and make a play or two,
- 59:18Speaker 3: and they come out of halftime, and Devin Dampier basically
- 59:22Speaker 3: on that drive was like, all right, I'm going to
- 59:24Speaker 3: have to make this happen, and he used his arm
- 59:27Speaker 3: a little bit, but mostly he used his legs, and
- 59:29Speaker 3: got the job done, got him a score, woke the
- 59:31Speaker 3: stadium up, and it's a game at that point. And,
- 59:35Speaker 3: you know, it's a good thing to see from a
- 59:37Speaker 3: guy at the quarterback position especially, but it wasn't all
- 59:41Speaker 3: scripted stuff.
- 59:42Speaker 4: Some of that was scrambling.
- 59:44Speaker 3: And when you have a quarterback who can do that,
- 59:46Speaker 3: I mean, how much does it change the game and
- 59:49Speaker 3: the offense?
- 59:51Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, that was big last week, and we
- 59:54Speaker 8: were kind of– Having success, we were moving the ball
- 59:59Speaker 8: up and down for the most part and then kind
- 1:00:01Speaker 8: of bogged down with some mistakes or unfortunate turnover in
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: the high red. But luckily and fortunate enough that our
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: defense was holding pat and not giving up touchdowns in
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: the red zone and really was the key of the game,
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: the one for three in the red zone for Houston.
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: And then really you just need that spark and really
- 1:00:29Speaker 8: hearing the comments and then talking with guys, just the
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: difference at halftime, right? It wasn't a yell fest. It
- 1:00:40Speaker 8: wasn't a pointing fingers. It wasn't we don't have answers.
- 1:00:46Speaker 10: It was very calm. It was very direct.
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: There was a plan.
- 1:00:49Speaker 10: You know, Coach Scali talked about that.
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: And then you had the players. igniting the team right
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: the leaders uh expressing like i got you and we're
- 1:01:00Speaker 8: gonna figure this out and keep believing keep keep staying
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: connected keep staying together and that's what takes teams to
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: a championship right like the belief and the connection and
- 1:01:10Speaker 8: you saw that you heard that from players you heard
- 1:01:12Speaker 8: that from coach scally at halftime when they were talking
- 1:01:16Speaker 8: offensive changes and uh making adjustments like everyone can call
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: play everyone can have a have a plan. And then
- 1:01:24Speaker 8: when a plan stinks or isn't working, can you adapt
- 1:01:26Speaker 8: in and find, find answers to what they're doing in
- 1:01:30Speaker 8: a timely fashion? Like those are the great coaches. Those
- 1:01:33Speaker 8: are the great staffs. And coach Scali alluded to that of,
- 1:01:37Speaker 8: of how they feel. They have an amazing staff and
- 1:01:39Speaker 8: ones that don't point fingers. They're going to find solutions.
- 1:01:42Speaker 10: And you saw that in the second half.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: We had, I mean, the most iconic play of the
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: game was that, that blitz that, Jackson Benny comes through well-timed.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: Running back has to pick up the linebacker coming through.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Benny is basically in his pocket, separates the quarterback from
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: the ball. D-tackle has already beat his man, so he's
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: able to fall on the fumble. And I imagine you've
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: executed that exact blitz a couple of times in your life.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: Tell me what Jackson Benny was seeing.
- 1:02:15Speaker 8: My goodness, when I saw the blitz, I knew exactly.
- 1:02:18Speaker 8: I can't for the life of me remember the names.
- 1:02:22Speaker 8: and it's still irritating me. We call it nacho. That's
- 1:02:27Speaker 8: what we called it when I was in San Diego
- 1:02:29Speaker 8: for my first couple years in the league.
- 1:02:31Speaker 10: It's basically four strong with.
- 1:02:32Speaker 8: The nickel and the mic with the tackle cross-facing the center,
- 1:02:36Speaker 8: and as long as you get the idea of the
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: center away from the nickel, it's a free runner, and
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: that's why it's.
- 1:02:42Speaker 10: Nice, Gally.
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: Gally said after the game when Coach Wood said the
- 1:02:46Speaker 8: unblockable blitz because if it is run and executed correctly,
- 1:02:50Speaker 8: it is because We basically have.
- 1:02:52Speaker 10: Four on three.
- 1:02:54Speaker 8: And I saw it happen right away, and I'm like, oh,
- 1:02:56Speaker 8: my goodness, what a perfectly timed call in a great situation,
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: a great moment. I know they were setting it up earlier.
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: They talked about that. And, man, a huge moment. Honestly,
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: it reminded me, I.
- 1:03:10Speaker 14: Don't like to bring.
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: It upon myself, but like the Oregon game where I sacked,
- 1:03:16Speaker 8: came off the edge and sacked.
- 1:03:18Speaker 10: The quarterback, forced fumble, and we recovered it.
- 1:03:20Speaker 8: And it really was one of the bigger plays in
- 1:03:22Speaker 8: that game.
- 1:03:23Speaker 10: Monumental game, momentum, and then we scored the.
- 1:03:27Speaker 8: Next play, and the crowd, and the blackout game, just
- 1:03:31Speaker 8: really incredible moment, proud, seeing all the videos made me
- 1:03:37Speaker 8: wish I was there, but also just couldn't be more
- 1:03:41Speaker 8: happy and happy and proud of the university and just
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: the fans and the excitement. Just having national attention on
- 1:03:49Speaker 8: our school is something that we don't get often, but
- 1:03:52Speaker 8: when we do, we make the most of it.
- 1:03:54Speaker 10: So really just an incredible moment.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: Colton Swan is my guy.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: He was up at Weber when I transferred up to Weber,
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: and I know you've gotten to know him probably a
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: little bit, and he's awesome. But the difficulty of making
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: a decision to be aggressive in some of the situations like,
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: Maybe right there with them kind of backed up, yeah,
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: go ahead and be aggressive. When they have another possession
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: after that, he still decided we're going to heat up Wegman.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: The game is still on the line there, right? You've
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: got an eight-point lead now, so there's a cushion. But
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: a lot of teams just go conservative, and as long
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: as they don't score, we're going to be fine. So
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: let's put a bunch of guys 30 yards off the
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: line of scrimmage and keep everything in front of us.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: And he decided to stay aggressive and to heat it up.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: And I know that's something that Morgan allows, and Morgan
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: maybe even probably encourages. I don't know whether that's a
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: new dynamic or that's something that we would have seen
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: with Kyle Whittingham and Morgan Scali. I want to be
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: fair to all that, but it just feels like everyone
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: in this program, coaches, players, assistants, everyone is kind of
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: allowed to do what they're supposed to do.
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: They are trusted to do their job, and I think
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: that's why they're 7-0.
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I think there's definitely some truth to that.
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: I would.
- 1:05:14Speaker 10: The amount of zero.
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: That Swan does is definitely pretty wild. I'm not going
- 1:05:23Speaker 8: to sugarcoat it. When he ran cover zero at the
- 1:05:28Speaker 8: minus 35-40 in a two-minute situation, they get a 46-yard completion.
- 1:05:32Speaker 8: I would have went out of my mind if.
- 1:05:34Speaker 10: I was Scali.
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: I might have took play-calling duties if I was him
- 1:05:38Speaker 8: for calling that in that situation. Now, I'm not in there.
- 1:05:42Speaker 8: I'm not doing it, but I just know that I
- 1:05:45Speaker 8: wouldn't have never, ever called that coverage in that situation
- 1:05:49Speaker 8: where time is on our side. Now we get down
- 1:05:52Speaker 8: in the red zone inside the 20, inside the 15, 10,
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: like it becomes who you are, right? What is your identity?
- 1:06:00Speaker 8: What do you stand on? What do you practice? What
- 1:06:03Speaker 8: are your players comfortable with? And When I was in Baltimore,
- 1:06:06Speaker 8: any fourth down or third down got to have it.
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: We were bringing overload cover zero, right? Like, we knew it.
- 1:06:12Speaker 8: We practiced it. We were confident in it.
- 1:06:15Speaker 10: We knew we'd get home.
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: So, I'm all about situational cover zero, but I'm not
- 1:06:22Speaker 8: in other.
- 1:06:23Speaker 10: Situations or throughout that game.
- 1:06:24Speaker 8: I was like, holy smokes, can we mix in some
- 1:06:28Speaker 8: other coverages to help out? Because we were getting schemed
- 1:06:31Speaker 8: up in that first half, you know, and I'm sure–
- 1:06:34Speaker 8: You know, they understand that.
- 1:06:35Speaker 10: And watching it, you could see it.
- 1:06:37Speaker 8: And then you saw in the second half, like, they
- 1:06:39Speaker 8: went into that bunch set.
- 1:06:40Speaker 10: They ran a man-beater. And what'd they do?
- 1:06:42Speaker 8: They went cover two to that side, and it was
- 1:06:44Speaker 8: locked up. And I think we got a sack or
- 1:06:46Speaker 8: a throwaway. So that was, you know, we're talking about adjustments.
- 1:06:50Speaker 8: We're talking about being ahead of the opponent and adapting.
- 1:06:54Speaker 8: And so it was, overall, it was an incredible defensive performance.
- 1:06:59Speaker 8: I just fear at times a little too much zero
- 1:07:02Speaker 8: will hurt us. against better competition.
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: How much of that is trying to compensate and maybe
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: overcompensate for, you know, you don't win with a four-man rush?
- 1:07:17Speaker 8: Well, you know, I think like at times throughout the game,
- 1:07:25Speaker 8: you could be, you can kind.
- 1:07:27Speaker 10: Of press like that.
- 1:07:28Speaker 8: That nickel blitz is just a five-man rush with zone
- 1:07:32Speaker 8: behind it with six guys dropping. So it's not like
- 1:07:34Speaker 8: a crazy time blitz, like the timing was amazing, but
- 1:07:38Speaker 8: the structure of the defense, like you're still protected, if
- 1:07:40Speaker 8: that makes sense. Like you're not so shorthanded against a
- 1:07:44Speaker 8: big play. And I think like situationally there should just
- 1:07:48Speaker 8: be like, you should just trust that you could play coverage.
- 1:07:51Speaker 8: You can mix and match coverage looks to make them pat,
- 1:07:56Speaker 8: you know, check the ball down, drive and tackle. And
- 1:07:59Speaker 8: the clock keeps ticking. Like you're going against the clock
- 1:08:02Speaker 8: now so much. the offense at that point but you
- 1:08:05Speaker 8: do when you're not producing sacks of the four-man rush
- 1:08:07Speaker 8: and you gotta remember like when i speak a lot
- 1:08:10Speaker 8: of times i'm speaking from more of an nfl game
- 1:08:13Speaker 8: where the d-line and the quarterbacks and the offenses is
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: much different it's a totally different game so you don't
- 1:08:21Speaker 8: have the quarterbacks they're gonna run around you don't have
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: it is a timely fashion like it's One, two, three,
- 1:08:27Speaker 8: ball out. If it's not, it's immediately the check down, right,
- 1:08:30Speaker 8: because the quarterbacks don't want to get hit, and you
- 1:08:31Speaker 8: can't afford to lose your quarterback. So it's just like
- 1:08:35Speaker 8: a regimen game, and you've got D-line that are paying
- 1:08:38Speaker 8: big bucks to win one-on-one battles, where at college it's different.
- 1:08:42Speaker 8: You just don't have those type of guys. So you
- 1:08:44Speaker 8: have to do different things defensively to manufacture pass rush,
- 1:08:50Speaker 8: especially situationally.
- 1:08:51Speaker 10: So I get it.
- 1:08:52Speaker 8: And so, like, take my thoughts with a grain of
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: salt at times. Like, it's not– I'm not in there,
- 1:08:57Speaker 8: and I don't really know what's going on. Personnel So
- 1:09:00Speaker 8: when I talk, I'm speaking more of like how I
- 1:09:02Speaker 8: was in the NFL and what, how our scheme was
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: compared to college.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: Eric Weddle is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: So now Utah, one of the three final undefeated teams
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: in power for football, number six ranked team in the country.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: And you've got the Holy War coming. You've got a
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: quality Cincinnati opponent where you've got to go to their
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: place and avoid the pitfalls of both the downturn after
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: an emotional win like you had against Houston and the
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: look-ahead spot, knowing that your rival is next week. How
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: does Utah manage Cincinnati, who is capable of beating you,
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: as they proved to Texas Tech, if you don't show
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: up and do what you're supposed to do?
- 1:09:43Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't see that with this team. I don't
- 1:09:46Speaker 8: see it with the head coach. I don't see it
- 1:09:48Speaker 8: with the leadership. It's very week-to-week.
- 1:09:52Speaker 10: You see all the guys talking about it.
- 1:09:56Speaker 8: Yeah, it was a big win, but it wasn't a
- 1:09:58Speaker 8: win that we didn't expect and not a win that
- 1:10:02Speaker 8: we didn't work hard for and earn. So I think
- 1:10:06Speaker 8: it's just about business. It's really about resetting, right? Resetting good, better,
- 1:10:11Speaker 8: and different.
- 1:10:12Speaker 10: We reset. We get back to... the.
- 1:10:14Speaker 8: Routine of the week. I would be more inclined that
- 1:10:18Speaker 8: Cincinnati will have a, not so much a letdown, but maybe,
- 1:10:22Speaker 8: maybe out of whack for, for a little bit of time,
- 1:10:25Speaker 8: just coming off that emotional win at home and the
- 1:10:28Speaker 8: crowd rushing the field. So I don't see, I don't
- 1:10:32Speaker 8: see it being a problem. Ironically, I talked to Morgan
- 1:10:35Speaker 8: a couple of nights ago. He, he randomly calls me
- 1:10:39Speaker 8: throughout the season and every so often, you know, we,
- 1:10:42Speaker 8: we talk and, And I brought that up and he
- 1:10:45Speaker 8: just says, I don't, I trust the players. I trust
- 1:10:48Speaker 8: our plan. I trust how we do things and the
- 1:10:51Speaker 8: importance of week to week, like every week is our championship.
- 1:10:55Speaker 14: Right.
- 1:10:55Speaker 8: And when you really talk about it and mentally approach it,
- 1:10:59Speaker 8: like this is our season every week, then you're not,
- 1:11:02Speaker 8: you're not looking ahead. You're not looking behind. You're just
- 1:11:05Speaker 8: focused on where you're at right then and there focusing
- 1:11:07Speaker 8: on the plan and trying to do your best. So
- 1:11:11Speaker 8: I don't, I don't see a letdown. I don't see
- 1:11:13Speaker 8: us looking ahead. This is a really good opponent, obviously,
- 1:11:16Speaker 8: on paper. I think some of the things that they're
- 1:11:19Speaker 8: good at, we can negate a little bit. And what
- 1:11:22Speaker 8: they struggle with, like stopping the run and defensively as
- 1:11:26Speaker 8: a whole, presents a lot of problems for them. And
- 1:11:28Speaker 8: when you look at it, I think we're the better team.
- 1:11:31Speaker 8: I thought Houston, we were pretty evenly matched. I don't
- 1:11:34Speaker 8: see that with Cincinnati. So I think if we go
- 1:11:36Speaker 8: out and play well and do what we got to do,
- 1:11:39Speaker 8: it'll be a two-score game for us. So we got
- 1:11:43Speaker 8: to see what happens.
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: You mentioned Cincinnati, their defense. I mean, they do some
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: nice things on offense. They run the ball very well.
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: That tab kid is one of the better running backs,
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: more productive running backs in the conference, but Utah looked
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: good and stopping the run against Houston.
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: Hopefully they can do the same thing again, Cincinnati.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: When we're talking complimentary football a lot with this Utah
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: football team this year, because we all grew so used
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: to for many years, it's like, all right, your defense
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: has got to win this game. How do you put
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: up points? It doesn't matter because your defense is not
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: going to give up points. This feels like one. You
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: never want to let it be that way in the
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: locker room. This feels like one where your offense should
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: give you some cushion here. At least on paper, this
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: is a vulnerable Cincinnati team. Devin Dampier and Kevin McGibbon
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: and everyone should be in their bag.
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: Utah should score like 40.
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: Am I wrong?
- 1:12:37Speaker 6: The expectation is to.
- 1:12:40Speaker 6: Play at that level. And especially when you look at
- 1:12:42Speaker 6: matchups and what the opponent likes to do, what they're
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: not very good at when you punch in the numbers
- 1:12:48Speaker 6: and then you talk about the scheme and then your
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: game plan, it's like, all right, we should be confident
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: going into this game, but we still have to execute, right?
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: We still have to do what's necessary to win games.
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: You gotta, you gotta not turn the ball over. You
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: gotta score in the red zone. You gotta, you gotta
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: win on third downs. You gotta always stop the run.
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: And so what they're good at, right? They got a
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: good running back, good running game.
- 1:13:07Speaker 14: Okay.
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: The quarterback can run around like, Well, we just faced that,
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: which was more potent, and we shut that down. So
- 1:13:16Speaker 6: we know win games, you've got to win the line
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: of scrimmage, you've got to stop the run, and you've
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: got to run the football offensively. It's time-tested, whether it's
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: Pop Warner football in first grade or in the NFL.
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: You win the line of scrimmage and you're able to
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: run the football and you stop the run, you're going
- 1:13:34Speaker 6: to win most games. So that is what it looks like.
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: I think as a team, I think just the different
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: dynamics of the team, of the leadership, of the vision,
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: of how it's being ran is complementary football and team football.
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: We're going to go win the game. We're not going
- 1:13:53Speaker 6: to rely on one side or the other to save us.
- 1:13:55Speaker 6: That's historically been what it's been at Utah with the
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: defense always trying to stay face and win the game
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: for us.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Would you call your boy Pat McAfee and tell him
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: to keep Utah's name out of his mouth?
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: Yeah, it's very interesting how all that came about. You know,
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: I don't know. Is he really not doing game day
- 1:14:21Speaker 6: this week?
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: I don't think... I have no idea what's going on. He's...
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: I don't.
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: Know what's true or not in social media anymore, so...
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: I kind of just like hold my comments back unless
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: it's something I visually see and have, you know, a
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: strong opinion.
- 1:14:38Speaker 10: About it as we know.
- 1:14:39Speaker 6: But, uh, I don't know, like if he really felt
- 1:14:43Speaker 6: that way or it just, it was just odd. Like
- 1:14:46Speaker 6: a video, like I get it. It probably felt a
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: little sideways at the university, put it out there, but
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: it wasn't, it was just, you know, I don't know.
- 1:14:56Speaker 6: Like as much, as much, uh, people talk negatively about
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: him and this, that, and the other, like we all
- 1:15:05Speaker 6: do that. You're going to like now put your foot
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: down and make a, make us think about it. So
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: I don't know. I hope he, I hope they like
- 1:15:14Speaker 6: reconcile because he's great at what he does. And we
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: have an amazing university. So I would hate for him
- 1:15:19Speaker 6: to feel that way over the course of time.
- 1:15:21Speaker 10: But Hey, it is what it is.
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: If you don't want to ever come back, we're going
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: to be all right.
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: 10 a.m. Kickoff announced for the Holy war. Everyone's up
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: in arms about it. Um, I, I get it. A
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: night game's great, but the school doesn't want to play
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: any more night games this year.
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: Uh, a five kind of ironic that Mark puts that
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: out there and then boom.
- 1:15:44Speaker 10: Okay.
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: You don't want a night game. We're going to give
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: you the earliest kickoff you can have.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: So 10 AM, what do you think?
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: Uh, I mean, obviously it's, you know, We're going to
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: be there, AJ and I, hopefully Chanel, and we're going
- 1:16:07Speaker 6: to be there. It's just like, you look at the
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: landscape of college football, yeah, there's a lot of great games.
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: There's not a better game than that with two ranked teams,
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: college football playoff implications, league title to get.
- 1:16:21Speaker 8: To implications, and you're not going to at least put
- 1:16:24Speaker 8: it in the 5 o'clock window, right? It's just like, It.
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: Goes back to, like, you know, it's the SEC. It's
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: whatever they want. And we're just kind of living in
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: their world. And that's okay. Like, it's still prime time.
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: It's an early kickoff. At least we get an early
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: kickoff this week to prepare us for next week. So,
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: that's kind of good.
- 1:16:46Speaker 10: With the 1245.
- 1:16:46Speaker 6: I think it's even 1145 or 1245. I don't really
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: know what Cincinnati is. But, anyway.
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: Yeah, Cincinnati is Eastern time zone.
- 1:16:58Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:16:58Speaker 16: So.
- 1:16:59Speaker 6: I, at the end of the day, yeah, I guess
- 1:17:02Speaker 6: it's not necessarily 1245 my time. So yeah, it's not,
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: it's not an early kickoff. We're going to go and
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: we're going to fight and not make excuses. It just
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: sucks for the fans. Like you're going to have to
- 1:17:12Speaker 6: tailgate at 7am. Like that's not very fun. People are
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: still going to have sleep. Is the stadium even going
- 1:17:17Speaker 6: to get filled by like mid first quarter? I don't know.
- 1:17:21Speaker 6: Like I expect it to be rocking, but it should
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: be in prime time. It should, it is in prime
- 1:17:26Speaker 6: time theoretically, but, It should be a five o'clock or
- 1:17:30Speaker 6: seven o'clock or four o'clock primetime best game of the year,
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: because that's what it is.
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: So would you rather have, because if you put it
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: in that like five 30 window, Miami and Notre Dame
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: are playing there on NBC, of course. And so you're
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: splitting viewership with Miami and Notre Dame.
- 1:17:47Speaker 10: Which I don't care about that.
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: I care about the game deserves to be. It's almost
- 1:17:52Speaker 6: like the Rose bowl. The Rose bowl starts at three
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: 30 and starts at when it's lit, and then it
- 1:17:58Speaker 6: goes into night, and you watch the transformation of just
- 1:18:01Speaker 6: how that game goes and the electricity. The game deserves
- 1:18:05Speaker 6: to be in the afternoon and nighttime because that's what
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: it is. It's the best game of the year. Not
- 1:18:12Speaker 6: just because it's our rivalry, but the two teams are
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: one of the best teams in the country. I don't
- 1:18:19Speaker 6: really care about that. I care about being an afternoon
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: night and playing under lights because that good game deserves
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: to be under lights.
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: Our last thing, this is an NFL question.
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: There's some big-name guys moving before the trade deadline. Quinn
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: Nelson's now a Seahawk. DeForest Buckner is back with the
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: San Francisco 49ers. Simmons traded to the Bears in kind
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: of a blockbuster deal. These teams are like, you know,
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: they're shoring up, especially their defenses, but in the Seahawks.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: case the offensive line any of these any of these
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: trades or movement the player movement sparking anything for you
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: think that one of these guys helps like the Simmons
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: help the Bears win a Super Bowl does DeForest Buckner
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: help the 49ers stop the bleeding.
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: I think the biggest move for me would be the
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: Seahawks getting Nelson. Okay. Because of the running game, obviously
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: the pass pro and getting Sam more comfortable. Listen, if
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: you give Sam Darnold time, he'll carve up defenses. And
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: so they obviously understood that they wouldn't have made the
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: trade that they need to help him out and know
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: when he gets hot, he can lead him to the
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: Super Bowl like he did last year. So I think
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: the other two– I don't think it sways much. The
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: Niners are always going to come down to if Purdy
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: can lead them against a really good defense, which he
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: struggled the last two weeks. And I know they're banged
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: up and injured, but that's always going to be the
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: case with the Niners. Like, Shanahan's going to scheme it
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: up and do the best he can, but at some point,
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: can Purdy make the throws against a really top-five defense?
- 1:19:59Speaker 6: That's what's going to happen. If he does it, they'll win.
- 1:20:01Speaker 6: If not, then they won't. So I don't think Buckner
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: makes a huge difference. Their defense is... It was good.
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: And then Chicago, that's interesting that they went and got him.
- 1:20:14Speaker 6: I think it makes a big impact. Obviously, the Bears
- 1:20:17Speaker 6: can score. But, yeah, I mean, of the three, I
- 1:20:22Speaker 6: think Seattle and the Bears maybe have the biggest impact
- 1:20:26Speaker 6: over the course of the rest of the season. And
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: with the Niners, I think it's a good addition, but
- 1:20:30Speaker 6: I don't think it sways much.
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: What's your final prediction for Utah-Cincinnati?
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: I think it's going to.
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: Be 37-21.
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: 37-21, Utah wins, improves to 8-0, goes into the Holy
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: War undefeated.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll sign up for that. That sounds good.
- 1:20:52Speaker 6: Well, we like that. We like that. I mean, hey, 35-17, 35-20,
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: we'll take that.
- 1:20:57Speaker 8: We'll take all of that.
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: We'll take all of that and more, and then we
- 1:21:01Speaker 6: get in Friday at around 12 o'clock. Probably go up
- 1:21:05Speaker 6: to the U, want to go to the bookstore, get
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: some gear for the game. It was up to the
- 1:21:10Speaker 6: students as I'm walking through, you.
- 1:21:12Speaker 10: Know, get my mind right.
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: Because, you know, I may just pull an all-nighter. I
- 1:21:17Speaker 6: may just pull an all-nighter.
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: Let's go, baby. Let's go.
- 1:21:21Speaker 6: Get the guys together and say, hey, come on over
- 1:21:23Speaker 6: to the Wettle Casa. We'll have some grub. We'll maybe
- 1:21:25Speaker 6: go to the movies. Hank, Shark, we'll get those guys maybe.
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: And we'll just have a good time. And we'll just
- 1:21:30Speaker 6: lead right into tailgating. 7 a.m., I'll drop Gage off
- 1:21:34Speaker 6: at the recruiting tent. Let him go do his thing.
- 1:21:37Speaker 6: And I'll just go back to eating. breakfast burritos and whatnot,
- 1:21:41Speaker 6: and then go watch the greatest game.
- 1:21:42Speaker 8: Of the year.
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: You know what?
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: Life is good, right?
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: That's the new game plan.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: All you Utah fans who don't want to wake up early,
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: Eric Weddle just solved it for you.
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: Don't wake up early. Just don't go to bed.
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: Perfect.
- 1:21:54Speaker 10: Don't go to bed, man. Why not?
- 1:21:56Speaker 6: Let's be great.
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: Let's go. All right, we'll talk next week. Thank you,
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: my friend. Good luck to you guys on Friday.

- 1:24:46Speaker 4: Raphael. Raphael. Raphael.
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: So you're just angry all the time? Comes with a,
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: I put a custom red stripe on mine.
- 1:24:53Speaker 8: Oh.
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: So you know. You know you're Raphael.
- 1:24:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: Raph is like the mean Ninja Turtle.
- 1:25:00Speaker 8: He is.
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: I was going to say, so you're just angry all
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: the time. You're an angry middle child. I chose, yeah,
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: I chose like the least appealing personality of all the
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: Ninja Turtles. Red's my favorite color, so I get it.
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: And a lot of times when you're a kid, you
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: just choose who has your favorite color.
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: I think that's what it was because he has kind
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: of the lamest of the weapons. Yeah, the daggers or
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: whatever you call those daggers.
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: You call them Sai. Sai, okay.
- 1:25:24Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: Leo's got the best with the katana blades.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:25:28Speaker 5: See, he was my favorite. Even though red's my favorite color,
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: I picked Leo because of the swords.
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: And then Michelangelo's just like a class clown with nunchucks,
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: which are an awesome weapon. Donatello is the brains. Yeah,
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: Donnie might be my second favorite.
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: Raph, just, I guess when I was three years old
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: and I decided he was my favorite Ninja Turtle, I
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: guess I just liked anything red.
- 1:25:54Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: And the Sai, is that what it's called?
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: Sai?
- 1:25:57Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: The The daggers are cool. They're not. You don't think
- 1:26:01Speaker 4: they're cool? They're the worst of the weapons.
- 1:26:02Speaker 5: I mean, they're unique looking. Obviously, they're the Japanese. They're Japanese,
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: but they're probably the most.
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: Unique looking of the Yeah. I mean, I guess, I guess,
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: but look, it all works out. You choose red when
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: you're three.
- 1:26:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: And then you end up working for the flagship home
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: of the youth and graduating from the university of Utah.
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: There it is. There it is. All right. Should we
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: get to this leaderboard? Let's do it.
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: Keep talking about the turtles. We could Mexico open. I
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: believe this is one. Correct me if I'm wrong on
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: the text line. I believe this is one that Tony
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: Finau has won before Mexico open a few years ago. Anyway,
- 1:26:34Speaker 5: Ben Griffin is your leader. He's tied at the top
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: with Ken say he had Rata. Speaking of Japan, Pearson
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: Cootie is alone in third at six under. Max Homa
- 1:26:48Speaker 5: is tied with a couple of guys at five under,
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: tied for fourth, and then rounding out the top ten,
- 1:26:54Speaker 5: tied for seventh. There's like six, seven, eight guys here. Trent,
- 1:26:59Speaker 5: excuse me, Denny McCarthy, Jeremy Paul, no relation to the
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: Paul brothers. Your new business partners, O.C.? Stephen Fisk in there.
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: They're at four under, rounding out the top ten. Speaking
- 1:27:13Speaker 5: of Tony Finau, who, again, I believe won this before
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: not that long ago, tied for 15th just outside the
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: top ten at three under. And Zach Blair, the other
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: Utah player on tour, is tied for 47th. He's even
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: through three holes. So that's your PGA Tour leaderboard update
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: brought to you by Uintah Golf.
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: Big thanks that you went to golf for hooking us up.
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: You just mentioned Jake Paul. He put out the announcement today.
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: We heard this coming. It's a segue.
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: I knew that that would just be Jeremy Paul, the golfer.
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: The German golfer would be a perfect segue to a
- 1:27:53Speaker 5: Daily Dump story.
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: Well done. Professional.
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: Jake Paul, who started his career in YouTube and then
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: kind of became just an icon of social media and...
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: the millennial slash gen alpha gen.
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: Z like celebrity.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: It's, it's a really fascinating story that is going to
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: be told many different times. Many different documentaries will eventually
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: be made about how Jake and Logan Paul became what
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: they are. Uh, but he's a one man business and
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: he is stepping back into the boxing ring after, uh,
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: there was some doubt whether or not he'd ever be
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: cleared to, to box again, because, he, he fought Anthony Joshua.
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: And so for people who are not like vaguely aware
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: of what Jake Paul has done, he, he got into boxing, right.
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: And he was boxing.
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: Mostly he started off boxing, retired MMA fighters, right. Guys, uh,
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: almost none of them who were considered strikers when they
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: were in MMA. And then he was like, okay, I'm
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: getting pretty good at this. And then he started to
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: fight retired MMA fighters who were strikers. Anderson Silva being
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: the most namely one or the most.
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: Important name in that regard.
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: And then he fought some pseudo-retired boxers.
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: And he's winning all of these, by the way.
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: And then he fought the younger brother of... World Heavyweight
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: Champion Tyson Fury, Tommy Fury, who is like an actual boxer,
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: but it's like Ken Griffey Jr. 's little brother, Carl
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: Griffey Jr. You know? Facing him in a home run derby.
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: You're just like, okay, cool.
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: Maybe he has power since he's got good bloodlines.
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: It's like instead of playing basketball against Cam Boozy, you're
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: playing against Caden Boozer. Actually, that's not even accurate because
- 1:29:55Speaker 3: Caden Boozer is still.
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: A D1 player. He's also really good, yeah. Tommy Fury,
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: he loses to Tommy Fury, right? And fine, that's fine.
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: Like, you're a YouTube guy who's now fighting legitimate boxers
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: and you're not going to win all those, right? And
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: because of his celebrity and because of the fact that
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: everything is like, he did the massive event against Mike
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: Tyson that all of us were rolling our eyes at, but.
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: We still watched it.
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: And then he stepped up and he went like, so
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: it was kind of like weird freak show events.
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: And then I think he heard the narrative.
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: Like everyone was criticizing him for fighting old guys and
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: retired guys.
- 1:30:36Speaker 5: And maybe they were fixed until he lost to a
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: couple of them.
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: Not legitimate guys. And he said, fine, you know what?
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: I'm going to fight.
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: Like a legitimate in his prime or close to his
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: prime heavyweight world champion caliber boxer.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: And he fought Anthony Joshua.
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: This is like me deciding I have some fame, some notoriety, some,
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: and I'm going to like, cool.
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: I get it.
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: I'm going to do one-on-one contests against like, I'm going
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: to do one against Joshua. Brian Russell. And then I'm
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: going to play against Greg Oster tag. And then I'm
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: going to like, I'm going to have a little bit
- 1:31:11Speaker 3: of fun. I'm going to flirt with it. All me
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: versus Patrick Ewing. That one was cool.
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: And then, uh, you know what, let's do.
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: Someone who's not so old and not so retired and like, okay.
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: Uh, Jimmer, I got one against Jimmer.
- 1:31:24Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: And then people, I hear people talking and saying, Hey,
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: you're not really doing anything.
- 1:31:28Speaker 4: You're not really testing yourself. And I'm like, okay, cool.
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: Me versus Kevin Durant. Let's go. That's what he did.
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: And say what you want about the freak show nature
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: of all this stuff. Nobody tells him what to do.
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: Nobody tells him what he can or cannot do. Nobody
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: forces him to do anything he doesn't want to do.
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: And so he said, I will go out and I
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: will box one of the best five boxers in the
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: heavyweight division on the planet right now. And he got
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: his jaw broken. He got his face broken.
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: And he handled it incredibly well.
- 1:32:01Speaker 3: Love him or hate him. I mean, he took the punch.
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: He went down. He actually kind of laughed at how
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: bad it hurt, how powerful it was. And now he's
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: coming back. Jake Paul is going to box again. We
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: don't know who the opponent is just yet. But here's
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: the thing. Because he's Jake Paul, it could be Canelo Alvarez.
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: It could be Ryan Garcia. Both of those guys are
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: like legitimate championship caliber boxers. Canelo, you know, rounding out
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: of his prime. Ryan Garcia is actually younger than Jake Paul,
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: who's only 29. Deontay Wilder has been talked about, so
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: he's another heavyweight. Ryan Garcia weighs like 145 pounds. Deontay
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: Wilder weighs like 220 pounds. And Jake Paul's like, yeah,
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: I'll fight anyone. It's just no rules. It's totally different, right? Also,
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: he's talked about Conor McGregor. UFC's not going to let
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: Conor McGregor do that. He's talked about Nate Diaz. Nate
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: Diaz is no longer under contract with anybody. Nate Diaz
- 1:33:05Speaker 3: can do it. He's talked about Francis Ngannou. Francis Ngannou,
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: UFC heavyweight champion, came to the PFL, won our heavyweight championship,
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: went into boxing, had a lot of success, had some failure.
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: Another guy named Darren Till. I'm not even going to
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: explain to you who Darren Till is because he's an
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: MMA fighter who's now just loud mouthing his way into
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: kind of some of these opportunities, but Jake Paul on
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: new year's Eve on Netflix, sorry, Christmas Eve, not new
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: year's Eve, Christmas Eve, a week earlier, a week earlier,
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: it'll be Christmas Eve.
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: Jake Paul will be fighting again. And guess what?
- 1:33:45Speaker 5: So picture it. You're in your Christmas jammies. Let's all
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: as a family watch Jake Paul get beat up.
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: Let's do it.
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: You're probably going to roll your eyes and you're probably
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: going to say, oh my gosh. And guess what you're
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: probably going to do?
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: Watch it anyway. You're probably going to watch.
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: And that is the magic of this young man, Jake Paul,
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: who is now in a convoluted way, my boss on
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: the PFL front.
- 1:34:08Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: When I said business partner, it's not really a partner.
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: It's an easier superior.
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: It's more like he gets to say whether I keep
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: announcing PFL fights, which- cross your fingers, everyone.
- 1:34:20Speaker 5: Um, so yeah, I've, I've put good vibes out there
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: for you.
- 1:34:23Speaker 4: So yeah, I've got a good feeling. I appreciate that.
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: And look, it's, it's one of these things that in
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: modern day sports entertainment, you kind of have to figure
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: out how you feel about it.
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: I'll freely admit.
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: And I've actually talked to Jake about this, that like,
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: I was a skeptic when he first got into the
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: whole boxing thing. Because he was selecting people on purpose.
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: He fought Nate Robinson.
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: That's right. He's like, I'm going to.
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: Find a small NBA guy who doesn't know anything about fighting,
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: but he thinks he does.
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: Great athlete, by the way. Nate Robinson, super elite athlete. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: I'm going to beat that guy up. I'm going to
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: box that dude. And then we're going to move on
- 1:35:07Speaker 3: from there. Going back to those days, I'm like, he's
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: just getting the clicks and the views. Well, you can't
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: say that about someone who, I mean, Mike Tyson is
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: 60 years old, but he's still scary, right? Still got
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: a face tattoo. So going up against Mike Tyson is like, whoa,
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: all right, dude. But going up against Anthony Joshua is like,
- 1:35:29Speaker 3: like I'm not, I'm no longer playing pickup basketball against
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: Patrick Ewing.
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: Who's well past his product. Patrick Ewing is prime.
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: I'm playing against Kevin Durant. It's like me versus Kawhi Leonard.
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: Where you're just like, you're not expected to win that.
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: No one thinks you can win that. He probably had some, like,
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: loose confidence that he could pull off a huge upset.
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: But there's no way that in his heart of hearts
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: he walked into that thing against a heavyweight champion in
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: his prime and was just like, yeah, I'm going to
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: win this.
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: He got into boxing six years ago. Anthony Joshua's been
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: boxing his whole life.
- 1:36:10Speaker 8: So.
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: There's a weird twisted admiration that has to come with that.
- 1:36:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: Christmas Eve. We'll be watching. So true or false.
- 1:36:22Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: As you said, I was skeptical. He, he cut you
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: off and said.
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: You're fired. No, thank goodness. Thank goodness. He did not.
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: You said what goodness. All right.
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: That's your daily dump here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: We've got an injury update. Injury reports coming out for
- 1:36:44Speaker 3: the weekend's games in college football. We've got Dish It
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: With Dev starting at 1 o'clock. Don't go anywhere. Oh,
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: at 1.45, we're giving out a free meal card to
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: Zhao Asian Cafe. So stick around for the free stuff.
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: And before we head to break, the Atlanta Dream... have
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: won the WNBA finals game today, which means that the
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: series is tied up 3-3, which means there is no
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: post-game celebration being interrupted as they have to clear the court.
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: So we're happy that the WNBA does not have to
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: deal with that potential fallout.
- 1:37:24Speaker 5: Bonus Daily Dump story? Conspiracy theory? The Valkyries didn't want
- 1:37:30Speaker 5: to win anyway?
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: Question mark? I told you that was a possibility.
- 1:37:34Speaker 10: Bum, bum, bum.
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: Spooky, scary skeletons and shivers.
- 1:37:45Speaker 7: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 1:37:48Speaker 7: best inside of your utes. Let's get back to OC
- 1:37:52Speaker 7: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: Speak with such a screech.
- 1:37:56Speaker 11: 877-353-0700.
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: If you have any requests.
- 1:37:58Speaker 11: For spooky songs....
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: The whole show tomorrow is going to be spooky.
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: Very scary edition of the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: That's the tease we're recording right now. That's the tease
- 1:38:22Speaker 5: for the show.
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: We should do that. We should do that, actually. Injury reports.
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: You'll hear from Bill Riley tomorrow. He wants to suck
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: your blood. Blah, blah, blah.
- 1:38:37Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: Let's dial it back in. Injury report. Injury updates. Brought
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: to you by our friends at The Advocates.
- 1:38:42Speaker 7: 801-355-5550.
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: Look, you might not have a case.
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: In that car accident, in that scooter accident, in that
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: lawn mowing accident. But maybe you should just explore the possibility.
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: Maybe you do have a case. Maybe that chronic pain
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: you're dealing with right now, maybe the lack of ability
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: to go to work, maybe there's something you can do
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: about it with the help of some insurance company-friendly lawyers
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: or some insurance company-familiar lawyers is a better way to
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: say that, that.
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: Know all the ins and outs and know how to
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: get you what you need.
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: 801-355-5550. AdvocatesUtah.com. Telebo C sent you. Utah injury report against Cincinnati.
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: Daydrin Zipperer is out. You have not seen him catch
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: passes this year. Tayson Reed, linebacker, backup linebacker, is out.
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: Questionable Hunter Andrews listed as questionable here on Thursday.
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: Hope to see him get upgraded.
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: He has honestly, he hasn't been as huge a part
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: of the game plan, the offensive execution that I thought
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: he would be. I thought that he'd have like more
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: breakout touches and things like that, but he's still a
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: valuable piece and you would hate to see him have
- 1:40:03Speaker 3: to miss this game.
- 1:40:04Speaker 5: He's a guy who's had some, he's gotten some opportunities.
- 1:40:08Speaker 5: He's the one that, that scored the first touchdown against Colorado,
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: for example. And he feels like a guy because we've
- 1:40:14Speaker 5: seen some things from him, including that Colorado game. he
- 1:40:19Speaker 5: just feels like a guy that you're, that if you
- 1:40:22Speaker 5: believe in him, you're like, he's going to break out
- 1:40:23Speaker 5: at some point in this year. So yeah, that would be,
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: even though he hasn't had as big impact as maybe
- 1:40:28Speaker 5: we thought he might be in the office, it might
- 1:40:30Speaker 5: have had in the off season.
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: Um, it still would be a pretty big deal if
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: he's out. Kelvin Obot, not appearing on this injury report.
- 1:40:39Speaker 11: Okay.
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: Now I don't like that. Kelvin Obot, not being mentioned
- 1:40:52Speaker 3: leads me to believe that there's no imminent return.
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: Oh, really? Because if it was doubtful.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: Or questionable or probable or anything in there, maybe we
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: get an invite or maybe we get an update out
- 1:41:10Speaker 3: of him, but maybe we get an update on Kelvin.
- 1:41:12Speaker 5: Oh, but we get an invite to the room where
- 1:41:14Speaker 5: they discuss these things, the room where it happens.
- 1:41:16Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:41:16Speaker 5: All right. Yeah, that's interesting because obviously on its face,
- 1:41:22Speaker 5: for those of us that have been conditioned to the
- 1:41:26Speaker 5: NFL injury reports, they're not on there, they're not injured.
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: But maybe, yeah, I guess it could be the other
- 1:41:33Speaker 5: way where they're like, this could be a more serious
- 1:41:36Speaker 5: injury so we don't feel the need to put him
- 1:41:38Speaker 5: on the injury report right now.
- 1:41:40Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:41:41Speaker 5: Obviously, no idea what the intricacies of the rules are
- 1:41:44Speaker 5: there from the Big 12.
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: Is a guy who you.
- 1:41:48Speaker 5: Think might, if he's not playing, do you have to
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: put him out in the first as out in the
- 1:41:53Speaker 5: first injury report or as questionable in the first injury report?
- 1:41:56Speaker 5: Or do you, can you just like leave him off
- 1:41:58Speaker 5: and then put him on, on a different one?
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: Now, remember I put the, the number of starts, the
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: over under on Kelvin robot starts for this Utah football
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: team at five and a half.
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: Does he start half of his freshman year?
- 1:42:10Speaker 5: Where's he at?
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: He's at three. He's at three starts. He's played in
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: every game, but he's at three starts all the last week. Anyway,
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: so We'll see. But that's worth mentioning. Hopefully you're wrong.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: Hopefully it's just he is back. But I can see
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: where you're coming from there, the concern. For BYU Arizona State,
- 1:42:33Speaker 3: Evan Johnson, who is one of their better corners, it's
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: either him or Trey Alexander that's the best corner. Evan
- 1:42:40Speaker 3: Johnson was the preseason All-American.
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: He is out.
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: LJ Martin is out. Rotational offensive lineman Trevor Nosler is out.
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: Andrew Gentry is still out. Preston Rex is listed as probable.
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: Kyle Svarchok, who is another offensive lineman who played but
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: didn't look that great, he is listed as probable. For
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: Arizona State, they've got Lyric Rawls, who's one of their
- 1:43:07Speaker 3: better players. He's the guy team captain type got sent
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: down to Big 12 media days. He's listed as questionable
- 1:43:13Speaker 3: in this game. There's a bunch of guys who are
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: listed as probable. Cincinnati has one of their starting offensive linemen, Tarantino,
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: listed as questionable.
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: If he doesn't play, that would be good for Utah.
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: And one of their kind of top five defensive linemen
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: is also listed as questionable for this one. So Utah,
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: I will, if Utah can keep this trend going, I
- 1:43:39Speaker 3: knock on wood, where there's fewer than five names on
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: the injury report, I'm Kelvin Obot's not available, so let's
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: say it's four this week.
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: Zipperer, Taysen Reed, Hunter Andrews, and Kelvin Obot.
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: If you could keep four, five, no more than that
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: on the injury report this year, that is really, really
- 1:44:00Speaker 3: good for the University of Utah.
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: That is lucky. The other thing that's been.
- 1:44:08Speaker 5: Good about their injury luck this year is even the
- 1:44:11Speaker 5: guys who have missed games other than Obot, And, and
- 1:44:15Speaker 5: if Hunter Andrews misses this game, you don't, you haven't
- 1:44:19Speaker 5: had real, you know, huge contributors on the offensive or
- 1:44:24Speaker 5: defensive side of the ball miss games yet. And, and
- 1:44:28Speaker 5: if it's Hunter Andrews, like again, he's contributed a little bit,
- 1:44:32Speaker 5: but not, this wouldn't be the Hunter Andrews missing. Isn't
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: Noah Benny missing from this, from basically the same position.
- 1:44:39Speaker 5: It's not missing semi-tow longer, right? This is, you would,
- 1:44:44Speaker 5: if you could choose, okay, one of these guys from
- 1:44:46Speaker 5: the tight end hybrid, a hybrid tight end type position
- 1:44:50Speaker 5: has to be out in this game. You might choose
- 1:44:52Speaker 5: Hunter Andrews out of that group, which is crazy.
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: When you go back to what I thought the preseason
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: expectations were for him, but you're right. Also of note
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: on the injury report brought to you by the advocates,
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: Kansas state versus Colorado is going to be Kansas state's
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: third string quarterback versus Isaac Wilson. We might be hammering
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: the under in this.
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: One, people. So hold on.
- 1:45:16Speaker 5: I missed, uh, missed Avery Johnson's injury.
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: Then Avery Johnson was out last week as well.
- 1:45:21Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: Jacob new Knuth, their backup quarterback listed as doubtful in
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: this game. So they're probably down to QB three in Manhattan, Kansas. And, uh,
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: I think it's going to be Isaac Wilson again. Sorry
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: for the university of Colorado. Although they've talked about and
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: played a little bit, the number three guy last week.
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: So, yeah, Yikes. Sorry, Bowler.
- 1:45:44Speaker 5: We Utes fans know how Kansas state is feeling going
- 1:45:48Speaker 5: back a couple of years ago.
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: Absolutely. That's rough. All right. That is your advocates injury updates.
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: And I reminded you of this yesterday, but I'm going
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: to remind you again today, you have extra time to
- 1:46:04Speaker 3: head down to Southern steer, Southern steer butcher, a modern
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: twist on the traditional neighborhood butcher shop.
- 1:46:12Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:46:13Speaker 3: And Southern steer down in Saratoga Springs. It feels like
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: it's a long jog from Salt Lake city. It's going
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: to take you about half an hour and it's totally
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: worth it. Just go in, walk back to the little
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: sample table. They have back left, left-hand corner of the store.
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: Take the little toothpick, stick it into the marinated steak tips,
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: take a bite of that. And you'll be like, all right,
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: I need five pounds of those for my watch party
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: or my tailgate that I'm doing at rice cycle stadium,
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: or that I'm doing at my house for the Cincinnati game.
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: grab some brats, some sausages, some dogs. They've got different
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: daily specials every day. If you join the rewards program,
- 1:46:47Speaker 3: the loyalty program, they're going to send you recipes. They're
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: going to send you suggestions. They're going to send you coupons.
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: And more importantly, you're going to get involved in this
- 1:46:55Speaker 3: community of growing community of people here in Utah. We're
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: uncompromising about the quality of their food that they're feeding
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: their families. They're uncompromising about the quality of the meat,
- 1:47:06Speaker 3: especially in the animal products that are going into their
- 1:47:09Speaker 3: mouths and their bellies and It is the hormone-free stuff,
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: the chemical-free stuff that you should be sourcing. And I
- 1:47:16Speaker 3: realize that's hard for an individual to do, so don't
- 1:47:18Speaker 3: do it yourself. Just go down to Southern Steer or
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: make a phone call, 801-895-3101, and say, look, I've got
- 1:47:25Speaker 3: to stock the freezer. Give me the quarter cow. Give
- 1:47:27Speaker 3: me the half cow. Just give me the clean stuff.
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: Dan and Aubrey Gunther are going to hook you up.
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: They're going to help you out. They're going to point
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: you in the right direction. And it's going to be
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: the best-tasting meal that you serve. For all your watch parties,
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: all your tailgates, all your barbecues, because you got the
- 1:47:43Speaker 3: right meat at Southern Steer Butcher in Saratoga Springs. 1705

- 1:48:44Speaker 4: How are you feeling?
- 1:48:46Speaker 12: Man, feeling great.
- 1:48:48Speaker 4: Feeling great.
- 1:48:50Speaker 14: 7-0.
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: Tell me how it feels right now, past the halfway
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: point in the season, and so far things are going
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: the way that everyone hoped they would.
- 1:48:58Speaker 4: Just how does it feel on a day-to-day basis up there?
- 1:49:02Speaker 11: Yeah, man, I think when your expectations are so high and,
- 1:49:06Speaker 11: you know, you're actually succeeding what your expectations are, you know,
- 1:49:11Speaker 11: it definitely feels good. It definitely allows you to know
- 1:49:14Speaker 11: that our culture works. We'll be preaching a locker room.
- 1:49:18Speaker 3: It works.
- 1:49:19Speaker 14: So it's just a.
- 1:49:20Speaker 11: Feeling of recognizing like all the work we put in
- 1:49:24Speaker 11: is working and we just got to continue and not
- 1:49:26Speaker 11: let off the gas.
- 1:49:28Speaker 3: We talked about it a little bit last week, but
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: now we have the benefit of hindsight as well. And
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: part of the narrative around Utah versus Houston was this
- 1:49:36Speaker 3: is the first time that Utah is going to be tested.
- 1:49:38Speaker 4: This is the first time that Utah.
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: Is facing a team that is truly their equal from
- 1:49:43Speaker 3: a talent standpoint, from a quality of coaching standpoint, all
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: these different things. And there were some people that doubted
- 1:49:49Speaker 3: that you all would survive that test or that you
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: all would succeed against a team that was as.
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: Good, as talented.
- 1:49:55Speaker 3: I know that doubt never really existed in the building,
- 1:49:59Speaker 3: but now that the results are there now, and it
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: was a great game. It was a close game credit
- 1:50:03Speaker 3: to Houston for doing what they did successfully. But at
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: the end of the day, you all emerged victorious. You win,
- 1:50:08Speaker 3: you cover, you win. and you proved that you're one
- 1:50:11Speaker 3: of the top teams in the country, even against high
- 1:50:13Speaker 3: quality competition. Now that you, you get to say, yeah,
- 1:50:17Speaker 3: we didn't doubt that. And if you did, you were wrong. Like,
- 1:50:20Speaker 3: give me, give me the sense of how it played
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: out relative to your expectations in that specific game.
- 1:50:25Speaker 11: Speaker 4 05,0 Yeah, no, the doubters, the doubters were
- 1:50:29Speaker 11: definitely heard by, you know, our team. We definitely heard
- 1:50:34Speaker 11: a lot of that going on. And just for us,
- 1:50:37Speaker 11: I mean, we, again, the coaches were preaching to us
- 1:50:40Speaker 11: that this was going to be a close game. Like,
- 1:50:42Speaker 11: you know, there's no way around it. It's going to
- 1:50:44Speaker 11: be a game where we're going to have to fight
- 1:50:46Speaker 11: to the end. You know, they're a talented group as well.
- 1:50:50Speaker 11: So just already having that mindset of this, you know,
- 1:50:52Speaker 11: this is a game where, you know, at the end
- 1:50:54Speaker 11: of the day, at fourth quarter, both teams are going
- 1:50:57Speaker 11: to have a chance to make this game happen. And,
- 1:51:00Speaker 11: you know, I think just me seeing our defense play.
- 1:51:03Speaker 11: I think our defense is, they're so consistent and just
- 1:51:06Speaker 11: able to give us opportunities when it's needed. And, you know,
- 1:51:09Speaker 11: same way, other way around. I think, you know, there's
- 1:51:11Speaker 11: drives where we get put on the four yard line
- 1:51:14Speaker 11: or something and we find a way to get out
- 1:51:16Speaker 11: of there and create points. So I just think the
- 1:51:18Speaker 11: way we've been playing has been honestly just amazing. Both
- 1:51:22Speaker 11: sides of all the way we're.
- 1:51:23Speaker 14: Helping each other.
- 1:51:24Speaker 3: I go back to when we were having these conversations
- 1:51:26Speaker 3: before the season started, like spring ball camp, and you
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: talking about the fact that the communication across offense and
- 1:51:34Speaker 3: defense now is maybe a little bit more open than
- 1:51:36Speaker 3: it used to be. You said it felt more like
- 1:51:39Speaker 3: a full team, that it wasn't offense versus defense necessarily.
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: Are we seeing that manifest itself with that complementary football.
- 1:51:47Speaker 4: You're talking about? Yeah, for sure.
- 1:51:50Speaker 11: I mean, even talking at halftime, you know, we, we
- 1:51:53Speaker 11: never want to go in there with zero points, but
- 1:51:56Speaker 11: just the supportiveness of the defense, the things that was
- 1:51:58Speaker 11: being said, there was no negative going on in the
- 1:52:00Speaker 11: locker room. There was no panic going on, you know,
- 1:52:04Speaker 11: and those guys just came up to me. They said, Devin,
- 1:52:06Speaker 11: just continue to lead, continue to be you, you know,
- 1:52:09Speaker 11: we believe in you. And just honestly, all the all
- 1:52:13Speaker 11: the positives that was going on during halftime definitely speaks
- 1:52:16Speaker 11: value on the confidence that our offense was able to
- 1:52:19Speaker 11: come out again and not feel the pressure of, you know,
- 1:52:23Speaker 11: our defense thinks we're lacking too.
- 1:52:25Speaker 14: Like we're all in this together.
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: It was a slow start and you guys have been
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: just red hot starters all year long. It was the
- 1:52:35Speaker 3: first drive, the first opening possession that you have not
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: scored a touchdown on. In this 2026 season, you were
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: six for six going into this game.
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: Houston was able to get.
- 1:52:45Speaker 3: Off the field and, you know, no points in the first,
- 1:52:48Speaker 3: no points in the second, as you already alluded to.
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: When it's not going smoothly offensively, what are the conversations
- 1:52:56Speaker 3: like even before halftime?
- 1:52:57Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:52:58Speaker 3: You come off after that first drive where every other
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: game you scored a touchdown, that one you get nothing.
- 1:53:04Speaker 3: Do you go and regroup? Do you even have to
- 1:53:05Speaker 3: think about it? Give me a sense of as the
- 1:53:07Speaker 3: game is unfolding and it's not unfolding with the hot
- 1:53:11Speaker 3: start you're used to, what that conversation on the sideline
- 1:53:13Speaker 3: is like.
- 1:53:16Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, I think there is a big difference
- 1:53:18Speaker 11: in our third down conversions coming from the first half
- 1:53:23Speaker 11: to the second. Second half, I think Houston, you know,
- 1:53:26Speaker 11: they did a great job. I think they also brought
- 1:53:28Speaker 11: in some new stuff that we haven't seen them do
- 1:53:32Speaker 11: against other defenses leading up to that game. So there's
- 1:53:35Speaker 11: just a couple of adjustments we made at halftime to
- 1:53:38Speaker 11: be able to come back out. But I mean, yeah,
- 1:53:41Speaker 11: I think the conversations on the sidelines, you know, we
- 1:53:44Speaker 11: just need one. We just we got to find we
- 1:53:46Speaker 11: got to find our way to get. get that one touchdown. And,
- 1:53:50Speaker 11: you know, after that, we, you know, we started to
- 1:53:52Speaker 11: kind of get rhythm.
- 1:53:52Speaker 9: We shot the role.
- 1:53:54Speaker 11: So just kind of trying to find that way to,
- 1:53:56Speaker 11: you know, put those points on the board. And normally we,
- 1:53:59Speaker 11: we roll after that.
- 1:54:01Speaker 3: And you found a way in the third quarter and
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: I'm not taking credit away from anyone else on the team,
- 1:54:06Speaker 3: because I know it's always a team effort, but that drive,
- 1:54:09Speaker 3: that scoring drive, felt like there was a lot of
- 1:54:12Speaker 3: Devin Dampier being like, all right, I'm going to make
- 1:54:15Speaker 3: this happen for my team. And I know you always
- 1:54:17Speaker 3: have that mentality, but tell me what you were seeing.
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: Tell me if there was a difference between the first
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: and the second half. I mean, you took off running
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: on a lot of plays, took what the defense gave you,
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: still hit some dinks, some dunks. That drive, that scoring drive,
- 1:54:33Speaker 3: felt like a lot of Devin Dampier. Was that by design?
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:54:38Speaker 11: You know, I think, you know, I think I've, I've
- 1:54:40Speaker 11: been a quarterback this year. That's tried to play inside
- 1:54:42Speaker 11: the offense, tried to play inside the pocket, just being
- 1:54:45Speaker 11: able to stay healthy and things like that. But yeah,
- 1:54:49Speaker 11: I just, I have a competitive spirit and when that
- 1:54:52Speaker 11: kicks in, you know, I, I turn it, I turn
- 1:54:55Speaker 11: it on and I do what I got to do
- 1:54:58Speaker 11: at that, at that time. And at that time I
- 1:55:00Speaker 11: felt like running the ball was pretty successful and And
- 1:55:04Speaker 11: just kept, just kept going.
- 1:55:05Speaker 4: Did it feel good, right?
- 1:55:07Speaker 3: Cause some people might've forgot, you know, I, I go
- 1:55:10Speaker 3: back to watching your New Mexico film and obviously before you,
- 1:55:14Speaker 3: you started to feel those injuries pile up last year,
- 1:55:17Speaker 3: you really made a lot of people miss running the
- 1:55:19Speaker 3: ball and you're, you're really good on your feet.
- 1:55:22Speaker 4: And I don't know if.
- 1:55:23Speaker 3: Everyone that watches Utah football remembered that. Did it feel
- 1:55:27Speaker 3: good to have that element of your game back in, back.
- 1:55:30Speaker 4: In the toolbox?
- 1:55:31Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:55:33Speaker 11: Yeah, it was kind of funny just hearing my teammates
- 1:55:35Speaker 11: and fans and stuff just like, man, we forgot you
- 1:55:38Speaker 11: could run like that. So it was kind of funny
- 1:55:41Speaker 11: to just hear that. But yeah, I think, again, I
- 1:55:45Speaker 11: think I was able to run like that because of
- 1:55:46Speaker 11: how healthy I'm feeling in a week seven game. So
- 1:55:52Speaker 11: just the way I've been coached, the way I've been
- 1:55:54Speaker 11: playing just allowed me to be healthy throughout the season
- 1:55:58Speaker 11: for a longer time than obviously last year.
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:56:02Speaker 3: I got to do this. You know, I got to
- 1:56:03Speaker 3: do this. Tell me, tell me what you saw on
- 1:56:06Speaker 3: the two interceptions.
- 1:56:09Speaker 11: Yeah. You know, the first one I thought I seen
- 1:56:12Speaker 11: Cree going down the middle. I kind of wasn't able
- 1:56:16Speaker 11: to finish my throw. I kind of got hit mid throw.
- 1:56:19Speaker 11: So the ball just kind of.
- 1:56:21Speaker 4: Tailed wherever it went.
- 1:56:23Speaker 6: I knew, I knew the ball wasn't.
- 1:56:24Speaker 14: Going where I wanted it to.
- 1:56:25Speaker 11: I just, I felt I got hit before I could
- 1:56:28Speaker 11: finish the throw. And you know, the second one, I
- 1:56:33Speaker 11: don't even know if there's an explanation that I felt
- 1:56:35Speaker 11: that as soon as I threw it, I was just like, yeah,
- 1:56:39Speaker 11: I will. That's when you, you run back for sure.
- 1:56:41Speaker 3: Speaker 0 1 thing that, and we talked about this
- 1:56:44Speaker 3: on Monday and you and I have talked about this
- 1:56:46Speaker 3: before there, everyone makes mistakes when you're the quarterback and
- 1:56:51Speaker 3: you got the ball on every play, right? It's magnified.
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: All the good stuff you do is magnified. All the
- 1:56:56Speaker 3: bad stuff you do is magnified. I think one of
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: the things that separates you, and I've said it many
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: times in many different ways, is your ability to forget.
- 1:57:06Speaker 3: Is your ability to say, that's not me. I'm going
- 1:57:09Speaker 3: to go out and I'm going to make the next play.
- 1:57:11Speaker 3: I'm going to go out and I'm going to execute
- 1:57:12Speaker 3: next time. And I think that one of the most
- 1:57:15Speaker 3: important things, and you could correct me if I'm wrong,
- 1:57:18Speaker 3: is that your teammates trust that also. Is that accurate where, like,
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: if there is a mistake made, if it's a, and
- 1:57:26Speaker 3: it's not only you, but like when somebody on this
- 1:57:29Speaker 3: team misses an assignment, throws a pick, fumbles the ball, whatever,
- 1:57:34Speaker 3: it feels like there's trust from the coaching staff and
- 1:57:37Speaker 3: from the rest of the team that he will write
- 1:57:40Speaker 3: that wrong.
- 1:57:40Speaker 4: Am I off on assuming that?
- 1:57:44Speaker 14: No, no, not at all.
- 1:57:45Speaker 11: I think just coming from a Maggie and a Gundy
- 1:57:51Speaker 11: Coming from their views, you know, they love my competitive spirit.
- 1:57:55Speaker 11: They love that I'm going out there to, you know,
- 1:57:58Speaker 11: not play to lose.
- 1:57:59Speaker 14: Play to win.
- 1:58:00Speaker 11: So they love that mentality. They're good with my decisions.
- 1:58:05Speaker 11: They let me know, you know, when I do have
- 1:58:07Speaker 11: those mistakes, just would have kind of done differently, obviously.
- 1:58:11Speaker 11: And just from a teammate standpoint, um, I feel like,
- 1:58:14Speaker 11: you know, I think everybody messes up on the field
- 1:58:17Speaker 11: at some point and I'm very encouraging to pick them
- 1:58:21Speaker 11: up and, you know, allow them to know, we, we
- 1:58:23Speaker 11: know who.
- 1:58:24Speaker 10: You are every day.
- 1:58:24Speaker 11: I mean, we practice multiple times in a week before
- 1:58:27Speaker 11: game day. So, uh, we know what you're capable of. Um,
- 1:58:32Speaker 11: obviously mine get a little bit more attention at, at times,
- 1:58:35Speaker 11: just cause my mistakes can, can rather have us have
- 1:58:40Speaker 11: the ball or them have the ball. So, but I
- 1:58:42Speaker 11: think our team just understands everyone makes them and they
- 1:58:46Speaker 11: know my competitive spirit. I'm going to bounce back.
- 1:58:48Speaker 4: Speaker 0 7, Devin damp.
- 1:58:49Speaker 3: Here's our guest issue with dev is brought to you
- 1:58:51Speaker 3: by Culligan water of salt lake city, America first credit union.
- 1:58:55Speaker 3: Valley blubbing, heating, and cooling. We do it every week
- 1:58:58Speaker 3: on the Sean O'Connell show. So, I mean, this was
- 1:59:01Speaker 3: a tight game and you guys have, you guys have
- 1:59:04Speaker 3: a one point lead and the ball goes back to
- 1:59:07Speaker 3: Houston and touch back. They're about to start. There's a
- 1:59:11Speaker 3: little over two minutes left. There's a two minute timeout coming.
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: I think at that point they still had one time
- 1:59:16Speaker 3: out of their own to use. And they got an
- 1:59:18Speaker 3: experienced quarterback, your counterpart on their team. Connor Wegman is
- 1:59:22Speaker 3: a talented player. Didn't have his best day. Your defense
- 1:59:25Speaker 3: did a great job against him, but what are you
- 1:59:28Speaker 3: all feeling on the sideline as the defense runs back
- 1:59:31Speaker 3: out there in that scenario?
- 1:59:37Speaker 11: Man, I mean, at first I think those guys have
- 1:59:40Speaker 11: been playing lights.
- 1:59:41Speaker 8: Out the whole game.
- 1:59:42Speaker 11: So, you know, my confidence was there that they're going
- 1:59:45Speaker 11: to find a way, they're going to find a way
- 1:59:46Speaker 11: to get a stop for us.
- 1:59:48Speaker 14: And we're going to have to.
- 1:59:49Speaker 4: Close this game out.
- 1:59:50Speaker 11: And yeah, again, that was the thought process. And then
- 1:59:53Speaker 11: I think when you see Benny make a play like that, shoot,
- 1:59:59Speaker 11: that was, that was crazy.
- 2:00:01Speaker 14: I've heard, I've heard right.
- 2:00:02Speaker 11: That was one where like, I was able to see
- 2:00:07Speaker 11: the whole, the whole stadium was kind of still packed
- 2:00:10Speaker 11: out at fourth quarter, which is, which is pretty like,
- 2:00:13Speaker 11: that's pretty good for a fan base to stick around
- 2:00:17Speaker 11: the whole entire game. You know, and the game was close,
- 2:00:20Speaker 11: but just for everybody.
- 2:00:21Speaker 4: To be there, yeah, it got loud.
- 2:00:24Speaker 11: So there was a boy showed up.
- 2:00:25Speaker 4: Speaker 0 7, it was amazing.
- 2:00:27Speaker 3: That moment, you know, you hear people fan base talks
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: about You know, Britain Covey had a punt return against
- 2:00:33Speaker 3: Oregon years back where the place about shook itself to pieces.
- 2:00:38Speaker 3: Cam rising two point conversion to beat USC. Things got
- 2:00:42Speaker 3: really loud. Jackson, Benny blitzing, taken down Wegman ball going out,
- 2:00:47Speaker 3: giant falling on it.
- 2:00:48Speaker 4: That, that was close. And I don't know if you
- 2:00:51Speaker 4: saw this. I'm sure you did.
- 2:00:52Speaker 3: It, it got so loud in rice echo stadium that
- 2:00:57Speaker 3: there was the, you know, they do the this, the
- 2:00:59Speaker 3: seismic readings or whatever it registers as a tiny earthquake
- 2:01:03Speaker 3: when the stadium gets that loud.
- 2:01:04Speaker 11: Speaker 2, that's sick. Like, yeah, it was definitely that
- 2:01:09Speaker 11: loud though.
- 2:01:09Speaker 3: Speaker 3, so in that scenario, you get the ball back.
- 2:01:16Speaker 3: You're already in scoring position. And now the clock is
- 2:01:20Speaker 3: either your friend or your enemy, depending on what happens
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: in that possession. And of course you scored immediately. Was
- 2:01:27Speaker 3: there any thought? Was there any conversation? Was there anyone
- 2:01:31Speaker 3: in your ear saying, Hey, let's milk this clock a
- 2:01:35Speaker 3: little bit. Let's, you know, if, if there's green grass
- 2:01:37Speaker 3: in front of you, maybe get down and use an
- 2:01:40Speaker 3: extra play or force them to use a timeout or whatever.
- 2:01:43Speaker 3: Was there any conversation about delaying the scoring, delaying the
- 2:01:47Speaker 3: touchdown in order to take some clock away from Houston?
- 2:01:53Speaker 11: Yeah, just being on the sideline, you know, it was conversated.
- 2:01:56Speaker 14: The ball was going to be in my hands, you know.
- 2:02:00Speaker 11: For that kind of drive. And, yeah, before we went
- 2:02:03Speaker 11: out there, I went up to Coach Cowley, and I
- 2:02:04Speaker 11: was just like, you want me to get– I think
- 2:02:07Speaker 11: we– yeah.
- 2:02:08Speaker 14: I just asked him, do you want me to score?
- 2:02:11Speaker 3: Yes, no.
- 2:02:12Speaker 11: And he was like, yeah, score the ball.
- 2:02:15Speaker 14: You get the opportunity.
- 2:02:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:02:17Speaker 11: The opportunity was there on the first play.
- 2:02:19Speaker 14: And I took it.
- 2:02:19Speaker 3: Speaker 0 7th, was there ever a thought to go
- 2:02:22Speaker 3: for two there and make it a nine point game?
- 2:02:24Speaker 3: And at that point, that's kind of completely out of
- 2:02:27Speaker 3: reach if it's a two position game.
- 2:02:28Speaker 16: Speaker 4 7th, yeah. I, you know, that conversation would
- 2:02:32Speaker 16: have been had if our defense wasn't playing as good
- 2:02:35Speaker 16: as they were when you know, they were there.
- 2:02:39Speaker 11: For, for a whole entire game to allow 13 points,
- 2:02:42Speaker 11: you know, you should have pretty good confidence in those
- 2:02:44Speaker 11: guys that they're going to get the job done. So
- 2:02:46Speaker 11: being up eight, we, you know, we, we were totally
- 2:02:49Speaker 11: good with our defense closing that out.
- 2:03:03Speaker 3: I don't
- 2:03:04Speaker 3: know how much that was part of the practice and
- 2:03:05Speaker 3: film conversation, but you score one point per game more
- 2:03:09Speaker 3: than they do. They rush for like half a yard
- 2:03:12Speaker 3: per game more than Utah does. And in this one,
- 2:03:16Speaker 3: your offense generates 226 yards on the ground. 150 of
- 2:03:20Speaker 3: those belong to Devin Dampier himself. And then Houston, with
- 2:03:24Speaker 3: that potent rushing attack, only able to get 86 yards
- 2:03:29Speaker 3: on the ground. And obviously that's that complementary football we're
- 2:03:31Speaker 3: talking about.
- 2:03:32Speaker 4: When they can't implement.
- 2:03:34Speaker 3: their actual game plan, which involves a lot of running,
- 2:03:36Speaker 3: it takes options away and it makes it. So Connor
- 2:03:39Speaker 3: Wegman has to be a hero and he just wasn't
- 2:03:41Speaker 3: able to do it because your defense was playing so well.
- 2:03:46Speaker 14: Speaker 4 05,0 Yeah.
- 2:03:46Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 2:03:46Speaker 11: Again, we knew before going in that, you know, our
- 2:03:49Speaker 11: offenses were very, yeah, again, So we knew it was
- 2:03:55Speaker 11: going to become a game where, you know, especially both
- 2:03:58Speaker 11: of our defenses as well, both of our defenses were
- 2:04:01Speaker 11: pretty high ranked for a third down. So we knew
- 2:04:03Speaker 11: the game was going to honestly come down to physicality
- 2:04:07Speaker 11: up front, whose run game was not going to be
- 2:04:10Speaker 11: as effective as the other and third downs, who can
- 2:04:16Speaker 11: get our offense back on the field more. And, you know,
- 2:04:20Speaker 11: they gave us those opportunities for sure.
- 2:04:23Speaker 3: We've seen this now in a couple of different games where,
- 2:04:27Speaker 3: you know, he, he is capable of being a workhorse,
- 2:04:31Speaker 3: being a bell cow back. And sometimes it just doesn't
- 2:04:34Speaker 3: translate that way.
- 2:04:35Speaker 4: 17 touches in this game.
- 2:04:37Speaker 3: He did have a beautiful reception taken away on a
- 2:04:41Speaker 3: penalty that would have added to his stat line. But
- 2:04:44Speaker 3: as we have talked about before, he still impacts the
- 2:04:47Speaker 3: game so significantly, even when the ball is not in
- 2:04:50Speaker 3: his hand.
- 2:04:51Speaker 4: But, but he, he scored the go-ahead touchdown, right?
- 2:04:54Speaker 3: So it's like this guy, even when he's not being
- 2:04:58Speaker 3: given 25 touches a game is still one of the
- 2:05:01Speaker 3: most valuable pieces in your offense. Just speak if you
- 2:05:03Speaker 3: can to how important way Sean Parker is as a teammate,
- 2:05:07Speaker 3: as a captain, as a guy that you can trust
- 2:05:09Speaker 3: when all the chips are down and you got to
- 2:05:11Speaker 3: go score.
- 2:05:13Speaker 11: Yeah. I mean, when Sean, he, he's one of those guys,
- 2:05:17Speaker 11: you know, I, I'm able to give them the check down.
- 2:05:19Speaker 11: I mean, we got such talented receivers, you know, those,
- 2:05:22Speaker 11: those guys are, are well respected.
- 2:05:24Speaker 10: By the defense.
- 2:05:25Speaker 11: And, you know, I, I love that I get to
- 2:05:28Speaker 11: throw the ball.
- 2:05:28Speaker 14: I get to make a two yard.
- 2:05:29Speaker 11: Pass and way Sean somehow turns into a 20 yard game.
- 2:05:32Speaker 11: So he finds a way to make big plays, whether
- 2:05:37Speaker 11: it's running the ball or, passing the ball, and then
- 2:05:40Speaker 11: just his ability to block, his mentality to block. It's
- 2:05:44Speaker 11: so different than you see a lot of running backs have.
- 2:05:48Speaker 11: He takes pride in protecting me. He truly finds it
- 2:05:53Speaker 11: like a brotherhood, like I'm not going to let you
- 2:05:55Speaker 11: touch my brother. He goes against guys that's 285. Sometimes
- 2:06:00Speaker 11: it's the 300 guys getting through, and he's willing.
- 2:06:03Speaker 4: To take that hit.
- 2:06:04Speaker 11: And especially in the run run game. I mean, we
- 2:06:07Speaker 11: give the ball to Bray Bray's falling away and ways
- 2:06:10Speaker 11: putting people on the ground. So there's, there's so much
- 2:06:12Speaker 11: about ways that besides the touchdowns that you don't see that.
- 2:06:18Speaker 3: He's doing a great job, Speaker 0 7 0, Utah
- 2:06:23Speaker 3: football team. So we're, we're getting into details here and
- 2:06:26Speaker 3: I shouldn't ask you to speak for another man, but
- 2:06:29Speaker 3: I know you guys are close. Bird Ficklin, not a
- 2:06:33Speaker 3: huge part of what ended up happening in this game.
- 2:06:36Speaker 3: I think he ended up with one touch officially. How's
- 2:06:41Speaker 3: he handling that? I know that this is all team,
- 2:06:43Speaker 3: and as long as you come out with the win,
- 2:06:46Speaker 3: everybody's happy. But he's a competitor as well, and I'm
- 2:06:50Speaker 3: sure he wants more. How's it working with Bird right now?
- 2:06:55Speaker 11: Yeah, again, as a competitor, you always want to feel
- 2:06:57Speaker 11: like you're contributing. And, you know, and that was something
- 2:07:01Speaker 11: that was talked about the day after when we were
- 2:07:03Speaker 11: all together. Just, you know, we want to find ways
- 2:07:05Speaker 11: to get you on the field, no doubt. Like, that's
- 2:07:07Speaker 11: not a secret. We want Bird on the field. And,
- 2:07:11Speaker 11: you know, just the way that game went, the things
- 2:07:15Speaker 11: I was working was kind of just drop back pass,
- 2:07:18Speaker 11: having receivers spread out, allowing me to be able to run,
- 2:07:22Speaker 11: take run lanes when it was there. And yeah, just
- 2:07:26Speaker 11: the way the game went and, you know, at the
- 2:07:28Speaker 11: end of the day, whatever makes us want to know
- 2:07:30Speaker 11: that week, I feel like everyone finds that as a win,
- 2:07:34Speaker 11: regardless of how little, how big their contribution was.
- 2:07:39Speaker 14: Speaker 0 7.
- 2:07:41Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:07:42Speaker 3: Now it's on to Cincinnati, a Cincinnati team that is
- 2:07:44Speaker 3: coming off a huge win. They beat Texas tech last weekend.
- 2:07:48Speaker 3: I know you're all very aware of that. This team
- 2:07:51Speaker 3: can run the ball super effectively defensively. Eh, tell me
- 2:07:55Speaker 3: what you're seeing from the Cincinnati defense.
- 2:08:02Speaker 14: .
- 2:08:17Speaker 11: going
- 2:08:18Speaker 11: into this game is, you know, they just came off
- 2:08:20Speaker 11: a big win.
- 2:08:21Speaker 14: So did us.
- 2:08:21Speaker 11: So I just feel like the biggest thing is who
- 2:08:24Speaker 11: can be more level-headed by game time, who can get
- 2:08:28Speaker 11: over it, you know, their win faster and start really
- 2:08:31Speaker 11: blocking in on getting another win. So I think that's
- 2:08:34Speaker 11: just the biggest mentality going into this week.
- 2:08:36Speaker 3: Speaker 2 05, 06, 07, 08, 08, 09, 010, 011, 012, 013, 014, 015, 016, 016, 017, 018, 019, 020, 021, 022, 022, 023, 023, 024, 025, 026, 026, 027, 029, 030, 030, 031, 031, 032, 033, 033, 034, 034, 035, 036, 036, 036, 037, 037, 038, 039, 040, 040,
- 2:08:43Speaker 3: 0 manage that because we're to a point now in
- 2:08:46Speaker 3: college football where everybody recognizes these danger spots, right? We
- 2:08:51Speaker 3: recognized it last week with BYU beats Notre Dame. Oh,
- 2:08:54Speaker 3: watch out for UCF. You can't let down in that game.
- 2:08:57Speaker 4: We knew it. BYU knew it still. They couldn't avoid it.
- 2:09:01Speaker 3: So when you're aware of it, how do you actually
- 2:09:04Speaker 3: approach making sure you don't fall into that trap, Devin?
- 2:09:08Speaker 11: Yeah, I think, you know, for me personally, I mean, just,
- 2:09:12Speaker 11: just being a quarterback, you know, I, my, my ability
- 2:09:16Speaker 11: to be better than next week, every single week is
- 2:09:19Speaker 11: at a pretty high level. I always want to find
- 2:09:23Speaker 11: a way to be the best Devin I can be
- 2:09:25Speaker 11: every single week. And just the way Scali preaches it
- 2:09:28Speaker 11: to our team, you know, we, we, we celebrate for
- 2:09:31Speaker 11: our two days for sure. And then after that, you know,
- 2:09:34Speaker 11: it is onto the next it's, it's find the ways
- 2:09:39Speaker 11: to also learn from our past game. And I think
- 2:09:42Speaker 11: that's the biggest thing is when we get, when we
- 2:09:45Speaker 11: meet up, you know, we can hear our defense being like, bro,
- 2:09:48Speaker 11: we would have did like three different things. If we
- 2:09:50Speaker 11: would have did something different on three different plays, they
- 2:09:52Speaker 11: probably wouldn't have scored at all. Or you hear the
- 2:09:55Speaker 11: offense like, bro, we could have put up two more
- 2:09:58Speaker 11: touchdowns if we just executed this right. So just to
- 2:10:01Speaker 11: hear that, you know, we're winning games and we're learning,
- 2:10:04Speaker 11: we're learning, we're, still have that eager to be better
- 2:10:07Speaker 11: than the next week. I think that's, what's keeping us
- 2:10:09Speaker 11: consistent every week on, you know, respecting our opponent.
- 2:10:13Speaker 3: My understanding is that the travel is a little bit
- 2:10:16Speaker 3: different because you're going so far.
- 2:10:19Speaker 4: Are you leaving a little bit earlier?
- 2:10:22Speaker 7: Yep.
- 2:10:23Speaker 11: Yep. Just, we leave earlier Friday to get out there
- 2:10:27Speaker 11: and just adjust time-wise and just a little bit of,
- 2:10:31Speaker 11: I guess, sleep schedule. We're getting that right as well.
- 2:10:37Speaker 4: It'll be, we've had a lot of conversations.
- 2:10:40Speaker 3: The fan base had a lot of conversations about the
- 2:10:43Speaker 3: proliferation of night games and we love rice Eccles at night.
- 2:10:47Speaker 3: That blackout was incredible. The atmosphere was phenomenal. As we
- 2:10:50Speaker 3: have already discussed, this one is a day game. So
- 2:10:54Speaker 3: can it be a little bit different? How do you
- 2:10:57Speaker 3: personally make those adjustments on game day when it's, you know, breakfast,
- 2:11:03Speaker 3: and then you got to get ready to play or
- 2:11:04Speaker 3: it's breakfast and lunch and you got to get ready
- 2:11:06Speaker 3: to play, or you get to watch games all day
- 2:11:08Speaker 3: and wait around because it's a night game.
- 2:11:11Speaker 4: How do you adjust?
- 2:11:20Speaker 14: .
- 2:11:22Speaker 11: .
- 2:11:23Speaker 14: .
- 2:11:28Speaker 11: Even other teams going from
- 2:11:30Speaker 11: a 10 a.m. game to a night game, you don't
- 2:11:34Speaker 11: need your body to be awake at 10 a.m. You
- 2:11:36Speaker 11: want to keep your body rested. When your game is
- 2:11:41Speaker 11: at 1 o'clock, you want to make sure that your
- 2:11:44Speaker 11: body is awake at that time.
- 2:11:46Speaker 8: You're ready to go.
- 2:11:47Speaker 14: There's a little bit of difference, but I.
- 2:11:50Speaker 11: Just think the two days before, if you prep yourself
- 2:11:53Speaker 11: the right way and let your body feel the way
- 2:11:56Speaker 11: it should, then you'll be all right.
- 2:12:07Speaker 3: doesn't matter to me,
- 2:12:30Speaker 3: but how do you feel about a 10 a.m.
- 2:12:32Speaker 4: Holy war kickoff?
- 2:12:46Speaker 11: .
- 2:12:48Speaker 14: .
- 2:12:50Speaker 16: .
- 2:12:56Speaker 11: But I mean, yeah, again, at the
- 2:12:59Speaker 11: end of the day, you know, we're, we're football players
- 2:13:01Speaker 11: or we're just ready to get out there and play
- 2:13:04Speaker 11: in any environment.
- 2:13:05Speaker 3: Speaker 0 1, there's been a lot of conversation around
- 2:13:08Speaker 3: the university of Utah and Pat McAfee and all of
- 2:13:13Speaker 3: that stuff is 1000% unrelated to anything you guys are doing.
- 2:13:17Speaker 3: And if anything, it's a distraction from what you are doing.
- 2:13:22Speaker 4: What are your thoughts?
- 2:13:23Speaker 3: If you have any, what, like, is it something that's
- 2:13:26Speaker 3: being talked about in the locker room?
- 2:13:29Speaker 11: Not, not on a serious manner. I think, you know,
- 2:13:32Speaker 11: people brought it up. It's, it's something that's going on
- 2:13:35Speaker 11: around our school.
- 2:13:36Speaker 10: Like we hear about it.
- 2:13:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:13:39Speaker 11: I mean, I, I don't really understand. I don't really
- 2:13:42Speaker 11: know the situation enough to really.
- 2:13:44Speaker 14: Speak on it fully. You know, I hope he, I
- 2:13:48Speaker 14: hope Pat doesn't truly.
- 2:13:50Speaker 4: Feel that way.
- 2:13:50Speaker 14: I hope like, I mean, I don't know.
- 2:13:53Speaker 11: It sounds like a, he didn't feel that way.
- 2:13:57Speaker 10: So I don't know.
- 2:13:58Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:13:59Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:13:59Speaker 4: I don't know either.
- 2:14:00Speaker 3: And it's something that's the reason I asked that question
- 2:14:03Speaker 3: is because I, I wondered if that's the answer. Like we, yeah,
- 2:14:06Speaker 3: we were aware of it, but it's not like something
- 2:14:08Speaker 3: that anyone has feelings about, you know what I mean?
- 2:14:10Speaker 3: Cause that in that case, maybe it's a distraction, but I,
- 2:14:14Speaker 3: I didn't anticipate that that would be the case.
- 2:14:17Speaker 11: Yeah, no, I don't think it's affecting our locker.
- 2:14:20Speaker 10: Room in any way.
- 2:14:23Speaker 4: How many times have you been to Cincinnati before?
- 2:14:28Speaker 10: I want it.
- 2:14:30Speaker 11: Isn't it?
- 2:14:31Speaker 10: Isn't it?
- 2:14:31Speaker 9: See your point out there.
- 2:14:32Speaker 11: The, the, the, I wanted the theme park amusement park. Yeah.
- 2:14:39Speaker 11: I went out there with my family once and just
- 2:14:42Speaker 11: to go to amusement park, me and my, me and
- 2:14:45Speaker 11: my cousins, but I was only like, seven years old
- 2:14:48Speaker 11: at that time. So I've been out there once for
- 2:14:51Speaker 11: a little bit, so I don't really remember. So this
- 2:14:54Speaker 11: kind of, I'll say this is like my first time
- 2:14:56Speaker 11: really getting that experience.
- 2:14:58Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:14:59Speaker 3: No theme parks, go get a win. And man, this
- 2:15:03Speaker 3: is a big week for the, all the obvious reasons.
- 2:15:06Speaker 3: And I very much look forward to our conversation next
- 2:15:09Speaker 3: week as well.
- 2:15:09Speaker 4: Stay healthy, Dev. We'll chat soon.
- 2:15:11Speaker 10: All right.
- 2:15:12Speaker 11: Appreciate you.
- 2:15:14Speaker 3: Devin Dampier, Dishing with Deb, brought to you by our
- 2:15:16Speaker 3: friends at America First Credit Union, Culligan Water of Salt
- 2:15:20Speaker 3: Lake City, and Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. We keep
- 2:15:24Speaker 3: rolling on the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:15:26Speaker 3: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 2:15:35Speaker 3: best inside of your youths.
- 2:15:37Speaker 7: Let's get back to OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio
- 2:15:40Speaker 7: of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:15:51Speaker 3: Marching towards the end of the show, and of course,
- 2:15:54Speaker 3: a big football weekend here in the state of Utah. Utah,
- 2:15:59Speaker 3: I guess, traveling to Cincinnati. So not in the state
- 2:16:01Speaker 3: of Utah, but it's a massive game. Everyone's going to
- 2:16:04Speaker 3: be watching Utah trying to stay undefeated ahead of the
- 2:16:06Speaker 3: Holy War. BYU will try to beat an Arizona State
- 2:16:10Speaker 3: team that should be down to their third string quarterback,
- 2:16:14Speaker 3: I think.
- 2:16:15Speaker 4: In this one.
- 2:16:16Speaker 3: So I think that bounce back opportunity for BYU feels
- 2:16:20Speaker 3: like kind of the obvious pick there, but we'll get
- 2:16:22Speaker 3: into some of that on the show tomorrow. When Lee
- 2:16:25Speaker 3: Sterling joins us and we have some discussions about the
- 2:16:29Speaker 3: actual matchups, WNBA finals are not at up three, three,
- 2:16:34Speaker 3: the dream and the Valkyries played their game during our
- 2:16:38Speaker 3: show today because of the early tip off time to
- 2:16:41Speaker 3: accommodate a An Atlanta Hawks game at their home arena
- 2:16:45Speaker 3: in Atlanta. So that one will go back to the
- 2:16:48Speaker 3: Bay Area, and the Valkyries will look to try to
- 2:16:50Speaker 3: close it out on home court.
- 2:16:52Speaker 5: I believe that we looked that up earlier this week.
- 2:16:54Speaker 5: That is Halloween night, 6 o'clock.
- 2:16:57Speaker 4: That's right.
- 2:16:58Speaker 5: So that's when Game 7 is at Chase Center in
- 2:17:02Speaker 5: San Francisco.
- 2:17:04Speaker 3: Got an email yesterday about the Big 12 game. Creating
- 2:17:09Speaker 3: a new rule, and I think it's overdue, and it's
- 2:17:11Speaker 3: something that I suggested and we talked about on the show,
- 2:17:14Speaker 3: and the questions of enforceability will be put to the
- 2:17:19Speaker 3: test with this rule that the Big 12 is implementing
- 2:17:23Speaker 3: when it comes to the hateful chants, when it comes
- 2:17:27Speaker 3: to the hate speech chants, the you-know-what-the-Mormons chants that happen
- 2:17:34Speaker 3: when BYU was visiting other basketball arenas and other football
- 2:17:37Speaker 3: programs on their fields in this conference, UCF tried to
- 2:17:44Speaker 3: control it, tried to stop it in the student section,
- 2:17:46Speaker 3: ejected some students for doing it. It persisted with obviously
- 2:17:52Speaker 3: non-ejected students kind of picking it up. And then, you know,
- 2:17:57Speaker 3: BYU has to deal with it. Their fans in Orlando
- 2:18:01Speaker 3: have to have the conversation that we've had. And it's
- 2:18:04Speaker 3: now quite frankly become tiresome because it's just like, Hey, sorry,
- 2:18:09Speaker 3: you get this. Half-baked apology from a university, and then
- 2:18:13Speaker 3: the Big 12 Conference institutes a.
- 2:18:15Speaker 4: Fine, a $ 100, 000 fine for UCF, which is.
- 2:18:20Speaker 3: I mean, look, every athletic department wants to keep their
- 2:18:23Speaker 3: money now because it's so expensive to do business in
- 2:18:25Speaker 3: college athletics, but $ 100, 000 is in the petty cash drawer
- 2:18:29Speaker 3: when you're talking about the overall budget of a college
- 2:18:32Speaker 3: football team. So the Big 12, I think, acknowledging that
- 2:18:39Speaker 3: the fines and the reprimands and the slaps on the
- 2:18:42Speaker 3: wrist are not going to change this. And obviously wanting
- 2:18:45Speaker 3: it to be part of not wanting to be part
- 2:18:47Speaker 3: of college football, moving forward in this conference, the big
- 2:18:51Speaker 3: 12 has implemented a new rule where the first incident
- 2:19:00Speaker 3: of these chance breaking out in an opposing arena or
- 2:19:04Speaker 3: stadium results in a warning of It's effectively a timeout
- 2:19:12Speaker 3: where the arena announcer will have to make a reprimand announcement. Hey,
- 2:19:18Speaker 3: this is the formal warning that we're going to be given.
- 2:19:21Speaker 5: Everyone in the student section, go to a corner and
- 2:19:25Speaker 5: stick your noses in a corner until we tell you
- 2:19:28Speaker 5: to turn around.
- 2:19:30Speaker 4: You know what? You're in timeout.
- 2:19:32Speaker 3: So my brother-in-law told us a great story about when
- 2:19:35Speaker 3: he was growing up about how if he fought with
- 2:19:37Speaker 3: his siblings... The parents would make them hold hands and
- 2:19:42Speaker 3: walk around the block. They would have to hold hands
- 2:19:45Speaker 3: with one another and go for a walk.
- 2:19:47Speaker 6: Wow.
- 2:19:48Speaker 4: So if the Big 12 could do that.
- 2:19:51Speaker 3: All right, UCF, find somebody in a cougar blue shirt
- 2:19:56Speaker 3: and hold their hand for the second quarter.
- 2:20:00Speaker 4: The whole quarter.
- 2:20:01Speaker 3: If you let go, we start the timer over. You
- 2:20:05Speaker 3: have to do the third quarter. We've implemented this with
- 2:20:09Speaker 3: our girls, and it's actually pretty effective.
- 2:20:11Speaker 5: I mean, it sounds like it would be. It's the whole, like,
- 2:20:15Speaker 5: it feels like it's in the same vein as, like,
- 2:20:17Speaker 5: you guys can't stop bickering. Lock those two in a
- 2:20:22Speaker 5: room until they get along.
- 2:20:23Speaker 4: Yeah, basically.
- 2:20:24Speaker 3: Same kind of vein. So the Big 12 can't do that.
- 2:20:28Speaker 3: So what the Big 12 does instead is they say,
- 2:20:30Speaker 3: all right, here's your warning. If it happens again, and
- 2:20:33Speaker 3: this is where, this is the only hope for stopping it, okay?
- 2:20:39Speaker 3: If it happens again, we are going to assess a
- 2:20:42Speaker 3: 15-yard penalty on the football field for unsportsmanlike conduct.
- 2:20:48Speaker 4: And we are going to, and or, we are going to.
- 2:20:51Speaker 3: Blow a whistle and a technical foul in basketball will
- 2:20:55Speaker 3: be assessed, meaning they shoot free throws and they get
- 2:21:00Speaker 3: the ball. This is what the Big 12 was forced
- 2:21:06Speaker 3: to do. You have to do this. You had to
- 2:21:08Speaker 3: make a change. You had to implement some kind of
- 2:21:12Speaker 3: meaningful punishment, or it's not going to change things. Student
- 2:21:16Speaker 3: athletes barely care if the school gets fined. General students
- 2:21:21Speaker 3: don't care at all if the school gets fined.
- 2:21:25Speaker 4: Zero.
- 2:21:26Speaker 3: If you're a half-drunk... sophomore economics major sitting in the
- 2:21:31Speaker 3: bounce house in Orlando, you do not give a bleep.
- 2:21:35Speaker 4: If the UCF athletic.
- 2:21:36Speaker 3: Department has to pay a $ 100, 000 fine, you don't care
- 2:21:39Speaker 3: at all, especially in a close game.
- 2:21:44Speaker 4: You care a lot.
- 2:21:46Speaker 3: If your actions or the actions of the people sitting
- 2:21:48Speaker 3: next to you or behind you or the whole row
- 2:21:51Speaker 3: in front of you suddenly gets a penalty that affects
- 2:21:54Speaker 3: the game itself. Now, For close games, this is something
- 2:22:00Speaker 3: that is absolutely going to be effective, in my opinion.
- 2:22:04Speaker 3: If BYU is blowing somebody out, or if someone is being.
- 2:22:11Speaker 3: If someone is blowing BYU out, I wanted to make
- 2:22:13Speaker 3: sure I didn't say the same thing again. If BYU
- 2:22:16Speaker 3: is up big or down big, and it doesn't feel
- 2:22:19Speaker 3: like it's going to change a game, then you might
- 2:22:23Speaker 3: still get this. You might still get this terrible chance,
- 2:22:26Speaker 3: you might still... Look, we've talked about it plenty of
- 2:22:30Speaker 3: times on the show. The right thing is for it
- 2:22:35Speaker 3: to never start. The second best thing is for it
- 2:22:38Speaker 3: to be stopped by the people in the surround, not
- 2:22:42Speaker 3: by the stadium employees, not by the security, not by
- 2:22:46Speaker 3: the university officials, but by the other fans.
- 2:22:50Speaker 4: Just be like, no, no, no, no, no. We're not
- 2:22:51Speaker 4: doing that.
- 2:22:52Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:22:53Speaker 3: And honestly, I don't know if this is going to
- 2:22:55Speaker 3: apply to bleep the Cougars or But if you do
- 2:22:59Speaker 3: it and you say what has been said, the religion
- 2:23:05Speaker 3: being the target, fine, warning, penalty on the field or
- 2:23:12Speaker 3: on the court. It sucks that this is what the
- 2:23:16Speaker 3: Big 12 has to do. There's also a question as
- 2:23:19Speaker 3: to whether or not the NCAA is actually going to
- 2:23:22Speaker 3: allow this as an enforceable penalty because games... in the
- 2:23:27Speaker 3: Big 12 Conference, basketball and football, have to follow NCAA
- 2:23:31Speaker 3: officiating rules. And there are rules for fan conduct, but
- 2:23:36Speaker 3: it's about fans interfering on the field or on the court.
- 2:23:40Speaker 3: If a fan runs out onto the Huntsman Center floor,
- 2:23:45Speaker 3: then the team can be assessed a technical foul based
- 2:23:48Speaker 3: on that. If you rush the field early, which we've
- 2:23:51Speaker 3: seen several times, Turns out we saw it a couple
- 2:23:54Speaker 3: weeks ago in Provo early. No penalty was assessed, but
- 2:23:58Speaker 3: maybe it should have been, right? We've seen it at
- 2:24:01Speaker 3: Rice-Eckel Stadium. Penalties can be assessed for fan interference.
- 2:24:07Speaker 5: And throwing things onto the field or onto the court
- 2:24:10Speaker 5: of play is obviously another thing that we see technical
- 2:24:13Speaker 5: fouls assessed for.
- 2:24:15Speaker 3: And this is effectively the same thing, right? It would
- 2:24:20Speaker 3: be the first rule for verbal harassment, as far as
- 2:24:23Speaker 3: I'm aware. But it's not beyond the pale.
- 2:24:29Speaker 4: It's not a stretch, in my opinion.
- 2:24:31Speaker 3: Because, again, we've made the point several times, if it
- 2:24:35Speaker 3: were any other subgroup of the American population, of another
- 2:24:42Speaker 3: faction of society being targeted, another religion being targeted with
- 2:24:46Speaker 3: that speech, you've got to believe... that something would be
- 2:24:50Speaker 3: done quickly. I promise something would be done quickly. And
- 2:24:54Speaker 3: this has taken some time. And I know that there
- 2:24:56Speaker 3: are plenty of people who are just like the Mormons
- 2:24:58Speaker 3: don't need special rules to protect them.
- 2:25:00Speaker 4: Well, you know what?
- 2:25:01Speaker 3: They don't, as long as they're being treated the same
- 2:25:04Speaker 3: way that everyone else is being treated, but that's not
- 2:25:07Speaker 3: the case. It And this is, it feels like a
- 2:25:16Speaker 3: measure that has to be taken by the big 12 conference.
- 2:25:20Speaker 4: We said this what week two.
- 2:25:22Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:25:23Speaker 3: Like you got to start penalizing on the field. So Brett,
- 2:25:26Speaker 3: your Mark, thanks for listening to the show. You're welcome
- 2:25:28Speaker 3: for the suggestion. You can keep the check and thanks
- 2:25:33Speaker 3: for doing it the right way. This is the next
- 2:25:34Speaker 3: press release. If you could just put, thank you to
- 2:25:36Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell. That's all we ask. It doesn't have to
- 2:25:39Speaker 3: be me specifically, just the show. Sean O'Connell's show. Yeah,
- 2:25:43Speaker 3: then we can spread it around. Your name's in the
- 2:25:45Speaker 3: show anyway. Yeah, but you know, it's a team effort.
- 2:25:50Speaker 3: There's at least two people involved in the show.
- 2:25:52Speaker 5: Yeah, that way I get a little credit too. I
- 2:25:56Speaker 5: like that. Even though no one's going to know.
- 2:25:58Speaker 4: It's like.
- 2:26:01Speaker 5: It's like the podcast with the guy's name on it.
- 2:26:03Speaker 5: You know, you don't know the, of the army of
- 2:26:05Speaker 5: producers behind some of those pods, like those large podcasts.
- 2:26:08Speaker 3: Like Van Halen, no one, no one knows the rest
- 2:26:12Speaker 3: of the people in the band.
- 2:26:13Speaker 4: Exactly. Bon Jovi.
- 2:26:15Speaker 5: I think that I was going to say, I think
- 2:26:17Speaker 5: this goes back even farther than BYU's inclusion in the
- 2:26:21Speaker 5: big 12. It seems like, and I'm sure I'm not
- 2:26:25Speaker 5: aware of, or I don't remember times when they were
- 2:26:28Speaker 5: in the mountain West conference and, that they might have
- 2:26:32Speaker 5: gotten these kind of chants directed at them or this
- 2:26:36Speaker 5: specific chant directed at them. But I do remember at
- 2:26:39Speaker 5: the end of their Independence Era game at Oregon where
- 2:26:44Speaker 5: the bleep the Mormons chant was chanted in the stadium.
- 2:26:49Speaker 5: So this is now a Big 12 problem that I'm
- 2:26:53Speaker 5: glad that the conference is finally taking some concrete steps
- 2:26:57Speaker 5: to try to eradicate or at least punish. when it
- 2:27:00Speaker 5: does happen going forward. But this has followed BYU for
- 2:27:07Speaker 5: at least this decade so far, maybe even farther back
- 2:27:11Speaker 5: than that. And we got a good text from Cade
- 2:27:14Speaker 5: on the text line. Thank you, Cade, for chiming in.
- 2:27:19Speaker 5: He said, is this only benefiting, and he says team
- 2:27:23Speaker 5: down south, is this only benefiting BYU or what else
- 2:27:27Speaker 5: is being defined as hate speech here?
- 2:27:29Speaker 4: Hold on.
- 2:27:31Speaker 3: If, if it happens at Utah versus Cincinnati, because Cincinnati
- 2:27:36Speaker 3: fans decide that Utah has too many Mormons on the team.
- 2:27:40Speaker 3: then Utah would also benefit from the potential penalty. The
- 2:27:45Speaker 3: hope is you don't get to that point. The hope
- 2:27:48Speaker 3: is that Cincinnati just gets the fine and everyone shuts up.
- 2:27:51Speaker 3: And more realistically, what I think is going to happen
- 2:27:53Speaker 3: and what this is going to, the way this serves
- 2:27:56Speaker 3: as a true deterrent is what you're going to get
- 2:27:58Speaker 3: is Every team on the official social media account or
- 2:28:03Speaker 3: the coach is going to put out a little video
- 2:28:05Speaker 3: or they're going to have a pep rally and Scott
- 2:28:08Speaker 3: Satterfield or whoever is going to show up and just
- 2:28:10Speaker 3: be like, guys, we want you to be loud. We
- 2:28:13Speaker 3: want you to be passionate. We want you to be crazy,
- 2:28:15Speaker 3: but do not get my team penalized. Do not do
- 2:28:19Speaker 3: the bleep. The Mormons chant.
- 2:28:21Speaker 4: Be respectful. Be respectful. And you know what? You don't
- 2:28:24Speaker 4: even have to be respectful if we're being honest.
- 2:28:27Speaker 3: You can honestly say almost anything when you're at a
- 2:28:33Speaker 3: sports game, when you're at a contest. You can say
- 2:28:36Speaker 3: almost anything you want. The place where people draw the
- 2:28:40Speaker 3: line and where there's been... real accusations and false accusations.
- 2:28:45Speaker 3: There's been everything on that spectrum, but we have heard
- 2:28:47Speaker 3: the chance. You can hear them picked up on the
- 2:28:49Speaker 3: TV sometimes, and that has to stop. And Cade, you
- 2:28:56Speaker 3: don't like the chance either. This seems a bit too excessive. Then,
- 2:28:59Speaker 3: then what is appropriate? What is the appropriate measure? Because
- 2:29:05Speaker 3: this doesn't come as a knee jerk. You got to
- 2:29:08Speaker 3: do something because I heard at one time, this has
- 2:29:11Speaker 3: been happening for for several years.
- 2:29:15Speaker 4: And if.
- 2:29:17Speaker 3: I'm, I'm not, but if I'm a member of the
- 2:29:19Speaker 3: LDS church and I have to sit there and explain
- 2:29:25Speaker 3: to anyone around me that guys, we, we don't want
- 2:29:32Speaker 3: this kind of beef.
- 2:29:34Speaker 4: We're here for the sport.
- 2:29:36Speaker 3: Or if I have to tell my, my 12 year old,
- 2:29:39Speaker 3: but my friends, I went to the hockey game with
- 2:29:41Speaker 3: the other night.
- 2:29:43Speaker 4: Mom, Colorado state cheerleader. Okay. Dad went to BYU. I
- 2:29:47Speaker 4: grew up with both of them.
- 2:29:50Speaker 3: She knew, she said, I did not want to take
- 2:29:52Speaker 3: my boys.
- 2:29:53Speaker 4: They have three young boys.
- 2:29:54Speaker 3: I did not want to take my boys to the
- 2:29:56Speaker 3: BYU Colorado state game because I knew what Fort Collins
- 2:30:00Speaker 3: was going to say at the game. I did not
- 2:30:04Speaker 3: want my boys to have to hear that. And guess what?
- 2:30:07Speaker 3: Dad wins out. They'll be fine. We're taking them to
- 2:30:10Speaker 3: the game. They had to have that conversation with their sons. Look,
- 2:30:15Speaker 3: I'm not going to pretend it's damaging to their psyche.
- 2:30:19Speaker 3: I'm not going to say that it hurts their feelings
- 2:30:21Speaker 3: and causes them to be depressive or anything like that.
- 2:30:24Speaker 3: But I also don't think it's appropriate that somebody attacks
- 2:30:27Speaker 3: anyone else's religion in general.
- 2:30:31Speaker 5: Especially at an entertainment event like a sports event where
- 2:30:35Speaker 5: you're just there to have a good time. You're there
- 2:30:37Speaker 5: to watch your favorite team play. You shouldn't have to
- 2:30:41Speaker 5: be subjected to that kind of– we're calling it hate
- 2:30:45Speaker 5: speech that you're using under that umbrella. You shouldn't have
- 2:30:48Speaker 5: to do that. And to answer Kate's question, I don't know.
- 2:30:51Speaker 5: I didn't read the press release, so it sounds like
- 2:30:54Speaker 5: you have. But I would guess that this applies to–
- 2:30:57Speaker 5: this same penalty is going to apply to racist chants
- 2:31:02Speaker 5: or things that are heard, anything against LGBTQ, any of
- 2:31:07Speaker 5: those vulnerable minority– type populations as well, not just religion.
- 2:31:12Speaker 5: So it probably won't just benefit BYU. But right now,
- 2:31:16Speaker 5: that's the thing that's motivating this rule to be put
- 2:31:21Speaker 5: in place.
- 2:31:21Speaker 3: And Cade says, and I think you're right, it seems
- 2:31:23Speaker 3: like a slippery slope to me. You're right, it is
- 2:31:25Speaker 3: a slippery slope. Because you don't want to censor speech
- 2:31:32Speaker 3: in general for sports fans.
- 2:31:34Speaker 4: However.
- 2:31:35Speaker 3: When people cross the line, you have to try to
- 2:31:37Speaker 3: take measures to see if you can stop that. And
- 2:31:40Speaker 3: this is a line crossed. I don't think there's any
- 2:31:42Speaker 3: debating that. It's not civil to attack somebody's religion because
- 2:31:49Speaker 3: the sports... It doesn't happen in Notre Dame.
- 2:31:53Speaker 4: It doesn't happen.
- 2:31:53Speaker 3: I don't think there's a prominent American Jewish football institution.
- 2:31:59Speaker 8: Right?
- 2:32:00Speaker 4: You just don't do it. Okay?
- 2:32:01Speaker 5: The closest thing might be Tulane's not officially... a Jewish school,
- 2:32:06Speaker 5: but I've, I've heard that that's one of the highest
- 2:32:08Speaker 5: population of Jewish students. So that might be the closest
- 2:32:11Speaker 5: thing is this one.
- 2:32:13Speaker 3: Jake says, what happens when a BYU fan dresses up
- 2:32:16Speaker 3: as a fan of the other team to start the
- 2:32:18Speaker 3: chant and try to get a penalty on the other team?
- 2:32:21Speaker 4: If there's a BYU fan out there. Okay.
- 2:32:24Speaker 3: Jake, if there's a BYU fan out there that is
- 2:32:27Speaker 3: so dedicated that they're going to dress up as an
- 2:32:32Speaker 3: Arizona state fan and go to the game, sit in
- 2:32:35Speaker 3: the Arizona state section and say, bleep the Mormons as
- 2:32:43Speaker 3: a Mormon themselves, then you know what?
- 2:32:45Speaker 4: They have earned the potential penalty that's coming.
- 2:32:48Speaker 3: That is an absolutely insane hypothetical scenario, but I love
- 2:32:53Speaker 3: your passion.
- 2:32:55Speaker 4: All right. We got to take a final break.
- 2:32:56Speaker 3: We're giving away a Zao Asian cafe gift card next
- 2:33:00Speaker 3: on ESPN 700 at 92 on FM.
- 2:33:14Speaker 7: You are listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source

- 2:33:26Speaker 7: right now.
- 2:33:33Speaker 3: Tell them you heard about it on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 2:33:36Speaker 3: Free lunch to Zhao Asian Cafe. The move today is
- 2:33:41Speaker 3: Mongolian beef, noodles. We'll go all the fixings, extra cilantro,
- 2:33:47Speaker 3: extra fried onions.
- 2:33:48Speaker 4: All right? Let's make that the order today. If you win, 877-353-0700.
- 2:33:51Speaker 4: If you could tell me how many.
- 2:34:00Speaker 3: NBA teams have never won a championship. The Brewers won
- 2:34:05Speaker 3: their first ever franchise championship last night.
- 2:34:08Speaker 4: Sealed it.
- 2:34:10Speaker 3: How many NBA teams have never won at all?
- 2:34:14Speaker 4: 877-353-0700.
- 2:34:15Speaker 3: Of course, the Jazz are among that group. Spence Chekits
- 2:34:19Speaker 3: is here. His show, The Drive, is next.
- 2:34:22Speaker 4: Hi, Spence.
- 2:34:23Speaker 12: Hello, Sean. I wandered into the studio to catch your.
- 2:34:31Speaker 13: Hypothetical concerning BYU fans dressing up in order to start
- 2:34:37Speaker 13: this horrific chant, I can absolutely picture that happening.
- 2:34:44Speaker 12: I can 100%.
- 2:34:47Speaker 13: See, some of these folks have a lot of time
- 2:34:50Speaker 13: on their hands, and.
- 2:34:51Speaker 12: They need to expend their energy in certain ways.
- 2:34:56Speaker 13: I can see a bunch of Helium Hall bros being like,
- 2:35:01Speaker 13: we're dressing up as you'd fans. We're going to buy
- 2:35:04Speaker 13: must t-shirts. We're going to get in the muss and
- 2:35:08Speaker 13: we're going to start the fetch the Mormon chance. Cause
- 2:35:12Speaker 13: if you, you know, if you launch into it with
- 2:35:15Speaker 13: a soft fetch, you're safe with, you know, the, the brethren,
- 2:35:22Speaker 13: you're not in trouble. And then the muscle just pick
- 2:35:24Speaker 13: it up from there.
- 2:35:26Speaker 4: I don't think they will.
- 2:35:26Speaker 3: I think the must is going to, Turn around and
- 2:35:29Speaker 3: punch anyone who tries to get a penalty for the team.
- 2:35:33Speaker 13: You think the muscle would have it in them in
- 2:35:35Speaker 13: that moment to tell the BYU fan who's dressed up
- 2:35:37Speaker 13: as a Utah fan to shut his trap?
- 2:35:39Speaker 10: I do.
- 2:35:39Speaker 12: I hope you're right.
- 2:35:42Speaker 3: To my knowledge, this chant has never come from a
- 2:35:47Speaker 3: Utah fan base.
- 2:35:48Speaker 12: That is correct.
- 2:35:49Speaker 13: I'm just thinking of the best possible scenario for BYU
- 2:35:54Speaker 13: fans to be able to troll clearly would be the
- 2:35:57Speaker 13: Utah game.
- 2:35:58Speaker 4: This coming in on the text line, I'm a BYU fan.
- 2:36:00Speaker 4: I was at the UCF game.
- 2:36:01Speaker 3: I never heard the chanting, but the PA announcer kept
- 2:36:03Speaker 3: announcing the fans to stop chanting. However, I wonder if
- 2:36:06Speaker 3: the UCF fans realize that probably more than half of
- 2:36:09Speaker 3: BYU's football team are not Mormons. They're not chanting at
- 2:36:13Speaker 3: the team, ladies and gentlemen. That's not who they're chanting at.
- 2:36:17Speaker 4: It's true.
- 2:36:17Speaker 12: It's correct. You're spot on.
- 2:36:21Speaker 3: I promise you when people watch BYU basketball... They're not like,
- 2:36:25Speaker 3: look at all these Mormon guys when they're looking at
- 2:36:27Speaker 3: the basketball team.
- 2:36:28Speaker 4: Correct.
- 2:36:29Speaker 3: They're especially the basketball team these days. They look at
- 2:36:32Speaker 3: the fans and that's where they want to chant. Here's
- 2:36:36Speaker 3: an option.
- 2:36:38Speaker 4: Just don't do it.
- 2:36:39Speaker 13: Well, that's the number one option, but what if, so you're,
- 2:36:45Speaker 13: you're a fighter. What's the best way to choke somebody
- 2:36:48Speaker 13: out quickly? Like I have like 10 seconds. I need
- 2:36:51Speaker 13: them out cold.
- 2:36:52Speaker 4: Just, Simple rear naked. Grab him around the neck.
- 2:36:54Speaker 12: Rear naked chokehold.
- 2:36:56Speaker 4: Easy to set up.
- 2:36:57Speaker 12: I'm thinking I could.
- 2:37:00Speaker 13: Sneak into the PA booth, rear naked chokehold the PA voice,
- 2:37:04Speaker 13: and then go over the PA and start the chant.
- 2:37:07Speaker 4: Start the chant.
- 2:37:08Speaker 12: We need a PA guy.
- 2:37:11Speaker 13: If we want to take this next level for BYU
- 2:37:13Speaker 13: to find an advantage, get a PA voice to, over
- 2:37:16Speaker 13: the loudspeakers, start the chant. And then BYU probably would
- 2:37:21Speaker 13: get every advantage they would want.
- 2:37:22Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:37:23Speaker 13: How would you penalize a school if the PA boys
- 2:37:25Speaker 13: started the chant?
- 2:37:26Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:37:26Speaker 12: What would happen there?
- 2:37:27Speaker 3: Yeah, you're doubling down.
- 2:37:30Speaker 4: It's a 30-yard penalty.
- 2:37:32Speaker 12: See, I tend to cheer for chaos.
- 2:37:33Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 2:37:34Speaker 12: I like stories. People always ask me, who do you
- 2:37:36Speaker 12: want to win?
- 2:37:36Speaker 4: I say everybody.
- 2:37:37Speaker 13: I want everybody to win, or I want everybody to
- 2:37:40Speaker 13: lose spectacularly to make for some chaotic, crazy stories.
- 2:37:44Speaker 12: It's better for the show.
- 2:37:45Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 2:37:49Speaker 3: I don't think we're going to get subversive BYU students
- 2:37:53Speaker 3: or fans infiltrating foreign fan bases and starting the chant.
- 2:37:58Speaker 3: I think this is a good measure from the Big
- 2:38:00Speaker 3: 12 Conference to try to eliminate hate speech in the stadium.
- 2:38:06Speaker 13: Look, all jokes aside, this is beyond past due.
- 2:38:13Speaker 12: There's been a lot of interesting reaction to.
- 2:38:18Speaker 13: The big 12 guidelines that people actually believe they're going
- 2:38:22Speaker 13: too far. Look, if, if every week we heard a bleep,
- 2:38:27Speaker 13: the Catholics or bleep, the Jews, or, you know, but
- 2:38:30Speaker 13: we only hear bleep the Mormons and now if the
- 2:38:32Speaker 13: other chance are going on and I don't hear about it,
- 2:38:34Speaker 13: maybe there's that. But for the people that are like
- 2:38:37Speaker 13: in their feelings about suddenly Mormon people are getting unfair treatment.
- 2:38:41Speaker 13: I found, I found that to be a really odd
- 2:38:43Speaker 13: reaction to how this has played out.
- 2:38:45Speaker 4: Yeah. I, and you know what, A deterrent. Hopefully it works.
- 2:38:51Speaker 3: If it doesn't, fan bases are going to be up
- 2:38:54Speaker 3: in arms about the fact that their idiotic behavior penalized
- 2:38:57Speaker 3: the team on the field or the court, and then
- 2:39:00Speaker 3: they could cry about it on the internet. But it
- 2:39:04Speaker 3: might not solve the problem, especially in blowout games, one
- 2:39:07Speaker 3: way or another.
- 2:39:09Speaker 4: Say again. James. James.
- 2:39:16Speaker 8: What?
- 2:39:19Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:39:20Speaker 3: I just, I'm not going to bring that to the air.
- 2:39:23Speaker 3: People could find out on their own.
- 2:39:28Speaker 13: Usually the producer jumps in your ear with some, Hey, uh,
- 2:39:32Speaker 13: Jaron Jackson Jr.
- 2:39:33Speaker 12: Just got hurt, but okay. All right.
- 2:39:37Speaker 13: Anyway, look, the only thing that was going to stop
- 2:39:41Speaker 13: this was some sort of repercussion on the field or
- 2:39:44Speaker 13: on the court. I mean, a hundred grand is a
- 2:39:48Speaker 13: big fine 500 K for the second offense, you know,
- 2:39:51Speaker 13: but ultimately the students don't care if the school gets fine.
- 2:39:54Speaker 8: Correct.
- 2:39:55Speaker 13: Coach doesn't care if the school gets fine. The coach
- 2:39:57Speaker 13: cares if suddenly there's a penalty on the field that
- 2:40:01Speaker 13: maybe if it's punitive enough, it leads to a play
- 2:40:04Speaker 13: that leads to the outcome of the game being compromised
- 2:40:06Speaker 13: and Coaches are judging on wins and losses.
- 2:40:09Speaker 12: This was the only way that this stuff was going
- 2:40:11Speaker 12: to stop.
- 2:40:12Speaker 3: Every coach, every football and basketball program is going to
- 2:40:16Speaker 3: put out a fan education video. Guys, please don't do this.
- 2:40:21Speaker 3: Please don't penalize our team. Coach McGuire says, if you
- 2:40:28Speaker 3: chant that, that Texas Tech doesn't like you anymore.
- 2:40:32Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 2:40:32Speaker 13: What happens when BYU is playing a Big Ten team
- 2:40:36Speaker 13: on the road?
- 2:40:37Speaker 12: Because this is a Big 12 list of guidelines, right?
- 2:40:41Speaker 3: It is.
- 2:40:44Speaker 12: So there's no deterrent for other conferences.
- 2:40:46Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 2:40:47Speaker 8: All right.
- 2:40:48Speaker 12: Well, baby steps, I guess.
- 2:40:49Speaker 4: I mean, most of their games are against Big 12 teams.
- 2:40:54Speaker 12: But not all of them.
- 2:40:56Speaker 3: I do hear that the Notre Dame fans abstained from
- 2:40:59Speaker 3: this chant when they were down in Provo because the
- 2:41:02Speaker 3: Catholics are classy that way.
- 2:41:03Speaker 13: Well, and also trying to do that in Provo. I mean,
- 2:41:06Speaker 13: it's never happened in Provo before. Not that I'm aware of,
- 2:41:09Speaker 13: at least. Like the one sliver of Lavelle Edwards Stadium
- 2:41:14Speaker 13: where the road fans actually sit.
- 2:41:17Speaker 3: If you're rooting for chaos, Spence, that's what you would
- 2:41:20Speaker 3: hope would happen. Just to see what the reaction would be.
- 2:41:23Speaker 13: Oh, let me be clear. I hope that it happens.
- 2:41:26Speaker 13: I just don't think that it ever will. Like, it's
- 2:41:28Speaker 13: not going to happen down in Provo.
- 2:41:30Speaker 4: All right. I'm way over time.
- 2:41:31Speaker 12: I don't hope that it happens.
- 2:41:32Speaker 4: Stay tuned for The Drive.
- 2:41:34Speaker 3: Thanks for listening to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:41:37Speaker 4: ESPN 792.
